I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I wish to record a low level stereo signal from the aux output of a stereo tuner using my Thinkpad.  The T460s has no input plug for a mic or other audio device.  Is there an alternative?  Is there any HDMI or USB adapter that will accomplish this task?  Thanks.

Welcome to the Community

Google "external sound card" and "Line In" with quotes around them and you'll get a zillion hits for USB devices. Some are better than others. There are cheapo dongles that do a passable job all the way up to professional ones with XLR inputs. (The ThinkPad's HDMI connecction is outgoing only)

Since you said "tuner," I imagine you're recording off of the radio. Unless you plan to use an HD radio, any of the less-expensive models should do a good job. Just make sure you get one with the jack pack you need that'll work with the OS and recording you're using.

This is a bit of a weird one...

I'm attempting to record music from vinyl onto my pc.
I have my turntable connected to an amp, which is connected to the line-in socket on my soundcard.

The first problem I noticed was that I was only recording the left-hand track of the stereo sound. The right-hand track was just recording as silence.
At first I thought this must be due to a connection problem somewhere causing the right-hand track signal to not reach the soundcard. However I then discovered that if I just wanted to listen to music from the vinyl through my computer speakers then it played both left and right tracks perfectly. So both left and right signals are definitely reaching my soundcard fine and the problem is purely with recording.

I checked the recording balance, it was set at dead centre, so that didn't seem to be the cause of the problem.
However, I decided to experiment with the recording balance a bit, and this is where it gets really weird.....
As I've already said, with the recording balance set perfectly central it records the left hand track but no right hand track.

If i move the balance gradually over to the right, the left hand track gradually fades out (as you'd expect), but the right hand track continues to record nothing.

But the really weird thing is when i move the recording balance gradually over to the left:
At first i still get all the left hand track and nothing from the right, but then at a certain point with the balan... Read more

Hello. I am EpicallyAWSM.

Alright before I explain, I must tell you that I WAS able to record audio previously.

I'm having a problem while recording audio with Fraps (a game video-recording software). Previously, I was unable to find the Stereo Mix at all, until I found the Drivers CD that came with my computer.

After I installed the driver, I tested it on a few different games, but the result was still the same: no audio in my recorded files. I have double-checked, and the volume for Stereo Mix is maxed, and it is set to the default recording device. I have spent countless hours trying to find a fix for this problem, so I decided to file it in myself.

One thing though, is that I'm aware my sound card driver is a little out of date, but I am unable to update it because I get an error while running the setup file. My sound card is "Realtek High Definition Audio Card" - that's all I know about it.

I'm sure my version of Fraps is capable of recording this audio, because I was able to do so before. Suddenly though I was unable to record audio and I had a problem with sound channels in Game Maker 8 (problem I will be asking in the Game Maker forum). I am unsure what to do. Please do not give me the answers I have been seeing for the past week (Check Show All Devices, make sure your volume is maxed, etc.)

Thank you

Hello,

After I reinstalled my computer I saw that stereo mix is not recording any sound, so I searched for a solution on other forums , but nothing worked.Than I found this forum and I saw the thread "Jack output reassignments (Fix)" and I changed the registry binaries, but still nothing.

I'm a newbie on this,so I need help to fix the problem.I got this version of my realtek driver: 6.0.1.6526.I downloaded it from guru3d.com , because I can't download from the official realtek site.

Realtek High Definition Audio Driver.

A:Stereo Mix not recording

Normally, the registry and the jack assignments should only be touched in specific situations. Because the System Mixer apparently is not recording has nothing to do with the jack assignments. Thus you should put them back to the original configuration.

Exactly what do you mean about the System Mixer not recording? What program are you using to record? What are you trying to record? Streaming Audio from the Internet? A microphone input? A Line In Input? Or is it that you do not have any audio at all, which would be more than just a system mixer problem.

Have you reinstalled your PC or motherboard vendor's drivers for Vista/Win 7? (You also need to fill in the "My System Specs").

We can't really help you without more info.

Go to the right hand end of your taskbar and you will see the loudspeaker icon. Right click on this, and in the dialogue box that pops up choose recording devices. Then make sure that the devices selected / marked active are actually the ones you are using. I have found the options 'Wave' and 'Line' often work better that stereo mix for recording.

If this doesn't move you forward, come back, but with details of your system and sound card if you are using one, or the on-baord sound system if you are using that.

Hi guys, this is probably a dumb question, but:

I'm trying to record system audio in a couple of different applications, and it's not working. Specifically, I'm trying to record audio off the web in Audacity, and system audio to accompany screenshot video in Debut Video Capture.

Based on google-fu, I went into the Sounds Control Panel and enabled Stereo Mix, but even when I select it as the record input in the applications, I get total silence on the recording, even though the expected sound is coming out of my speakers.

I'm using Windows 7 Home.
Again: The problem is NOT simply that Stereo Mix is disabled. That seems to be a common problem, and enabling it suffices for most people. But as I said, I've already done this, but when I select Stereo Mix as the input, it simply doesn't work.
Any help would be much appreciated. It's probably something simple I'm missing, but I've tried everything I can think of or find info about online. Thanks!

A:Recording off Stereo Mix not working

Hi,
1.Have you set Stereo Mix as default device and default communication device? Just as a mention, enable is not the same as default (green check mark).
2.Also, try disabling Microphone while enabling Stereo Mix.
3.If the methods above not work, reinstall the sound driver for test.
Start>Control Panel>Hardware and Sounds> Click "Device Manager".
Find the driver/device that you wish to reinstall, which would be your sound driver, "right-click" and select "uninstall".

Then reboot, if this was a Windows provided driver, then your PC should reinstall it the next time you log back in. If it requires the driver from the manufacturer you will be prompted to provide it.
Meanwhile, I still want to mention the steps to enable Stereo Mix.

Some sound cards do NOT support stereo mix, regardless of settings.

You can try older drivers--XP or Vista--in compatibility mode. That works in some cases.

If not, you would need to buy another internal or external sound card that is known to support stereo mix in Windows 7.

Drivers do not cost anything if you download them from your PC or laptop manufacturer's website - anywhere else that charges for them, it's a scam.

If it's a PC and it was self-built or built-to-order (in other words not factory-built & no brand-name) download drivers from the motherboard manufacturer's website - they're free too.

My microphone is supposed to record in stereo and I can use the "listen to microphone" setting on my computer and hear it that way but when I go into audacity or any other recording programs I have on my computer it will record both channels of a stereo recording as if I'm recording with a mono microphone on both channels. I've tried altering all of the settings I can find but I cannot seem to stop this from happening. I'm sorry if my wording is kind of off I'm not 100% sure how to phrase parts of this. Back in the day, most mics sounded awful and your only alternative was usb mics. However, newer motherboards seem to have better onboard mic (less noise) and any old headset will do.

the motherboard I have is an asus P5KPL-CM it's onboard audio is:
VIA VT1708B 8 -Channel High-Definition Audio CODEC

and its chipset:

Intel G31

In windows xp, audio capture was fine. I primarily use the mic with online gaming and was really happy with how well the onboard sound recorded. Very clean, little noise. In game people said my mic sounded great and tests showed that.

Went to windows 7 recently, everything is great except the mic recording is also capturing what audio output is going on (ie. the game's sound as well)

I played with the nixer settings to death and can't seem to prevent this from happening. All games do it, windows sound recorder, audacity etc.

I noticed there is a stereo mix tab and it has it's own recording volume which I have as muted and its recording level down to zero.

This is with the front mic port but I've tried the back and same thing. This isn't an expensive headset, but again it worked great in xp. If the cables were gone it would be scratchy, not pick up the audio output. But I have a backup of this headset and tried it but the same thing.

I don't have the speakers plugged in, but thought maybe the headset was 'bleeding' somehow and the mic was picking it up, but with just the mic plugged in alone it still recor... Read more

Hi, I have 2 x HP Probook 470 G2 and a HP ProBook 450 G2 in our household, all of which cannot detect a microphone or stereo line in device such as an IPod etc being plugged in. They all detect headphones perfectly OK but I now need to use the combi jack as an input for these types of devices. In "sounds" - "recording", the external microphone box says "not plugged in", even though DTS gave me an alert to tell me that I had plugged in a device. Can anyone advise please? Thanks

Hi Guys, We have been deploying T460s  20FAS09P06 for over 1 year now using MDT globally As we have changed suppliers and now when we deploy the same model we are getting the BOD when on the first reboot.  I have updated the drivers in MDT but still getting the error. we rebuilt a T460's which we have had for about 5 months it builds fine. Checking the difference the one with the issue has a SAMSUNG MZNLN512HMJP-000L7 AND THE BIOS is updated. Any ideas?

Hi,
i am totally stumped, and would appreciate some help.
i have an acer aspire 5742/win7 64HPrem./realtek HD audio onboard.
all i want to do is plug a 3.5mm jack into the mic input and record some mixes (of my own) from my other laptop using Audacity.
I can use audacity ok, so i dont think its that.

So, the input works as the mic input, but of course the sound quality is very poor and very distorted.
so i need to turn the mic input into a line-input .
So i un-hid Stereo Mix and enabled it, and disabled the mic.
i can select Stereo Mix in audacity, but there is no input still. Nothing.

i have read now loads of forum posts about this, and it all seems oddly complicated. Surely it cant be that hard to do?? It was easy in XP..

I also updated the drivers from Realtek to the very latest (previous ones from 2010). Now however, i have totally lost Stereo Mix. It isnt there anymore (as some forum posts warned in fact).

So, in summary, please can anyone help me to get decent audio quality into my laptop?
It must be possible....

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hiseems T460s (20F9) is wors than my previous laptop T420s, I can't move it so freely as before. At certain point the mouse cursor just stops moving and have to use force with a finger to make it move anywhere. I noticed the cap hole is now much smaller than f.ex. T420s, perhaps this is the reason for it. I found a link on the net to make the movement possible better;http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/thinkpad-t460s-trackpoint-mod.790347/In addition, previously there came several Caps with the laptop, now there is not a single extra one. So I don't dare to try the fix above link before I have at least one extra cap in case something goes wrong. So the question is what is the product code for the Thinkpad T460s Trackpoint Cap collection? I tried to look in the net, hard to find.  I used Lenovoguickpick and the possible code might be this;ThinkPad Super Low Profile TrackPoint Cap Set (Part # 4XH0L55146)Then again googling that with amazon produces no results so can't get those anywhere. Any help appreciated, Thank You.

According to Lenovo Japan, these new Super Low Profile caps are going to be available in May.

Hi Guys,   I bought a Thinkpad T460s laptop and replace the build-in 128G M.2 Sata SSD with Samsung M.2 NVM 950 pro 256G SSD. It works perfectly fine with Windows 7.    I do noticed that the T460s still have another M.2 42MM slot which can be used for 4G WWAN card, will this slot be used for another SSD drive? Such as MyDigitalSSD Super Boot Drive 256GB M.2 SATA 42mm SSD? Or it can only take M.2 PCIE 42mm SSD which isn't availabe on the market at moment.   Any suggestion will be appriciated! Albert

A:Thinkpad T460s M.2 42MM for SSD, is this possible?

Transcend 2242 MTS400 Sata III M.2 SSD 256Gb is not recognised by Windows 10 or the bios in the M.2 WWAN socket on my T460s.  The drive is not faulty - it's now functioning in a USB enclosure.  Lenovo support suggested on phone that the WWAN socket supports SSD but I have not seen this confirmed.    Experience of others would be interesting. Peter
