I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello, fellow HP-ers! Hoping someone's expertise can assist me. I decided to clean out my fan by opening up my laptop keyboard. Unfortunately, I must've snagged a power strip or something because suddenly, the mouse stopped working. Does anyone know which power strip is for the mouse? Or if there's something to resecure in there? I've provided a photo for reference. Thanks in advance for the help!  - Mr. Horrible DIY-er

I have a just over one year old (~14 months) Dell Inspiron 17 laptop with Win 8.1 (no touch) and of course it's out of warranty. The mouse simply stopped working, no cursor. I was able to use the touchpad but then that quit too in quick order.
I spent hours searching here and the interweb looking for possible fixes, so far no luck.
The worst of the issue is now I can't get past the splash screen to the login screen to access the repair/restore functions in Windows.
How do I access these when I can't even login to the computer?

A:Mouse stopped working, then touchpad, then keyboard

I called Dell and they want almost $300 to send it back so they can 'look at it'!
Any thoughts or suggestions to solve this issue?

Well... Thats about it. My left click was working and then all of a sudden. BANG. stopped. Moving the mouse with the touchpad and using the mousepad to left click still works as does the right click button on the touchpad. Any solutions?

A:Left Mouse Click on Laptop Touchpad stopped working

I assume you have checked your settings in Control Panel > Mouse Properties?

It will save a lot of time if you can determine whether this is a hardware problem or a software problem.
Try this: Download a copy of UBUNTU. Put this on a USB stick. Boot from the USB stick and choose to Run The Program (you do not need to install it on your hard drive). Then check to see if the mousepad works OK in UBUNTU. If it does then it is a Windows/Software problem. If it doesn't then it is a defective mousepad.

Another issue with the external mouse and keyboard.   I am using 8 and my mouse/keyboard have been working up until Friday when there was an update and then both units no longer worked.  The USB key storage works but the other items not.
I tried them in another computer and it works perfectly.  I am not as versed in Bios etc but have attempted to correct with driver udpates (all good), and add new hardware etc...nothing is working and I too need some help with getting this set up.
MS please respond re this and options...I have been working on this for some time and need an answer and some tech help.

Hi guys,

New here, so I hope I'm not out of line asking for help, and that I'm asking correctly. I've exhausted my own ideas on this but the problem is driving me IN.SANE.

THE ISSUE:
When using an external (USB) mouse with my ASUS Win7 laptop, the mouse randomly lifts up and re-clicks while clicking or while dragging (despite the button remaining consistently depressed), resulting in selection of the wrong objects, inadvertent double-clicks, and incorrect dragging. From what I can tell, this affects only the left click and not the right.

WHAT I'VE TRIED:
Laptop touchpad - no problem. Everything works fine with the built-in touchpad.
Another mouse - same problem. These are wired mice, so it's not a battery or connection issue.
Another USB port - same problem in all four. There's no visible issue with the motion of the mouse/cursor, so it seems to be communicating OK via USB.
Safe Mode - no problem, from what I can tell. The wired USB mouse seems to click and drag as normal in Safe Mode.
Mouse Settings - no effect. Adjusting the click/double-click/drag settings doesn't seem to change anything.
System Resources - no effect. Clicking/dragging seems to show the same results in the RAM/CPU monitors whether I'm having the problem (with the mouse) or performing the same actions without the problem (with the trackpad).

WHAT I CANNOT FIGURE OUT:
What haven't I ruled out? What else could be causing the issue?

The problem came on suddenly after about a year, but I... Read more

Hey mate, and welcome,

Possible problem:
1. Mouse itself is bad. Either the button itself or internally
2. Driver is not at its best

Try:
Going to the mouse manufacture website to download the most recent driver for your Windows 7, either 32 or 64 bit. If it doesn't work, try without any driver (so that windows driver takes over).

Troubleshooting a fairly new HP laptop. Had been infected with a virus. Cleaned it all up but was experiencing erratic mouse behavior. The customer claimed the behavior started when he got hit with infection. While the pointer itself moves fine the left and right mouse buttons intermittently act like they are being held down causing the pointer to drag and highlight everything in site. At other times the buttons do nothing at all. At other times the left mouse button triggers a rightclick menu. And at other moments all mouse control is fine. This occurs equally on the touchpad or when using an external USB mouse. I tried disabling the touchpad completely but the problem still occurs when using the external mouse. I tried updating the sypatics touchpad driver but that made no difference either. I finally resorted to wiping and completely reinstalling windows but the problem still persists. For the hell of it I then updated the BIOS firmware but that made no difference either. All keyboard function work fine so I have been having to resort to using the arrow keys and alt tab and such to navigate around. I ran a Passmark Burn in Test and everything passed.

A couple of additional points. I ran the Hirens Boot CD which is similar to the Ultimate Boot CD. I then booted into the Mini Windows XP and the same erratic mouse behavior occured so this is clearly not an operating system issue. Also when I wiped and reloaded Windows I used the HP Recovery partition and ran thei... Read more

Hello Tristan,

Welcome to the forums.

Been a while since I had a laptop, but I seem to remember there being a setting on what to do with the touchpad when the mouse is plugged in. Unfortunately I don't remember where and have no way of finding it.

Have you tried rebooting with the mouse unplugged?

Sorry I can't be of more help. The manual for the laptop ought to have that info in it somewhere.

I have a Yoga 2 Pro, running Windows 10, working fine after upgrade several months ago.Last week noticed intermittent touchpad freezing, then touchpad lock requiring a reboot, then total failure of touchpad.Suspected HW but did all usual things such as reinstalling drivers, cleaning registry. Arrived back from trip and plugged in a USB mouse, but it doesn't work (mouse confirmed working in other laptop). I then opened her up and checked the touchpad cable - re-seated it, but no joy. My questions are.. can a failed touchpad prevent a usb mouse from working ?If not then what can cause all mouse function to not work. In all other respects the latop is working fine. Thanks in advance for any help offered. PS I have not tried a restore to previous state yet - but will do once backup has completed. The only other thing I can think of doing is replacing the touchpad.

It said that the license expired but I had just bought it brand new a few weeks back. It's charging me to fix the problem by buying all the licenses that I need. So I tried to and it didn't accept my info or credit card number so I called the number it gave me and that also didn't work out for me. I have tried everything. First thought: check the Asus website and see if there is an updated Synaptics driver.

Second thought: go to Device Manager and uninstall the touchpad, including the driver (if asked). Restart and then re-install the driver, then see if the setting will stick.

I use an external USB mouse most of the time. I must disable the touchpad via control panel each time I start or restart the laptop. I want to disable the touchpad except when I wish to reactivate it for temporary use without the external mouse. The system is a new HP Pavilion dv6 with Windows 7. The touchpad is a Synaptics TouchPad V8.1.

A:[SOLVED] Disable touchpad w/ external mouse

Usually there is a touchpad icon in the lower right corner of the Taskbar. You might find a setting there to disable the touchpad. Some laptops have an on/off button just above the touchpad, but you can accidentally turn it on.

You could also disable the touchpad in Hardware Manager. This is a more "permanent" solution, because you would have to go back into Hardware Manager in order to re-enable it.

I have a Yoga 920, which replaced my Yoga 3 Pro, and I love it dearly. I have adjusted to the tiny up/down arrows OK. I would like to automatically disable the touchpad whilst using the external mouse, at least when typing. I decreased the touchpad sensitivity but then the touchpad doesn't work that well when I don't use the external mouse. I can't find any place in Settings or Control Panel or any registry hacks that apply to this model of laptop that would help this. My touchpad on ideapad Y700 15-ISK just stopped working. I did a little research in drivers and i found, that there is no driver for touchpad installed. I tried to download new drivers from lenovo site and I used an older driver from C:\Drivers\Touchpad, there is InstNT.exe, which made a driver shows up in device manager, but prompt me to restart the laptop. When I did, the driver got lost again and I had to make the InstNT.exe "instalation" again. Then I tried to update it with a setup.exe in the same synaptics folder and after it, the driver got itself a name for synaptics. So I said to myself, ok after restart now, it will be fine. But it wasn't. Again, the driver is gone.I'm attaching a screenshot for you to see driver being installed, but after restart, it vanished and isn't even showing in unrecognized drivers. In addition, my windows defender warned me about some threats, but I guess it got rid of them, because there were none to be found by me. Just wanted to say it, maybe it could affect my problem.

What is the make and model# of your laptop?
Boot into Setup (Bios) go to Integrated Peripherals and look for Touch Pad, if it is Disabled, Enable it.
boot normally, and go to the computer manufacturers Support/Download drivers site and type in your make and model # or your service tag # and download the touchpad driver for your model.

Hey everyone this is my first post here,
I'm hoping to get some guidance to resolve and issue I've been having with a laptop I am trying to refurbish. It's a HP Pavillon TX1000 I got from a friend. I put in a new Western Digital scorpio Blue HD and installed Vista Home.
Everything seemed fine but after installing drivers from the HP site and antivirus and malwarebytes, the touchpad stopped working. It had been fine beforehand. I had to plug in a USB mouse which works fine.
So far I've tried these things:
In control panel looking at the mouse settings the Synaptics Touchpad is greyed out and I can't enable or disable it. I can only remove the usb keyboard driver.
I system restored but it hasn't helped.
I download the Synaptics Touchpad driver again and reinstalled it, but it didn't make any difference.
There is a button above the touchpad which is supposed to enable and disable the pad but pressing it makes no difference, the blue light shows it's enabled but it's not.
I am trying a windows reinstall but even during that I am having to use the usb mouse.
Any ideas what I can try next???
The laptop specs are: The laptop specs are: AMD Turion 64 x2 Mobile Technology TL-58 1.90 GHZ

A:touchpad stopped working after windows 10

Following a thread from earlier Microsoft forums, this worked for me yesterday to restore trackpad function. Go to the Acer driver page for your computer. Download the intel IO chipset drivers for Windows 8.1. Run the setup for the driver in "compatability mode" and install. You will need to restart the computer. The computer will then recognize the trackpad as a valid device. Then download and install the Synaptics (or Elan) driver for Win 10 from the Acer support page and restart. If the trackpad is not immediatley active on the restart, hit Function F7. At least this fixed it for me.

Hello, recently the clicking of my touchpad stopped working . In the beginning, right-clicking was very difficult, now it is also left-clicking and the warranty has expired, which is very annoying. So it is possible to use the mouse and also touch/tip and multitouch, but not the clicking function. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? So I'm looking for DIY instructions or ideas. Or maybe there is such a problem with the Y50. it is not a software problem. all drivers are up to date.best regards

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and have not been able to get the scrolling feature on my touchpad working again. The device is listed as Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad. I have already downloaded the latest drivers and software, I have tried deleting drivers, and reinstalling drivers. Nothing seems to work.

My touchpad seemed to work when I first started my laptop, but then it stopped as soon as programs started loading. I installed a driver from HP's website, and that didn't fix anything, even after I restarted my laptop. Any advice?
