Transfering files to or from a device connected to a USB 2.0 hub

Q: Transfering files to or from a device connected to a USB 2.0 hub

I run an ACER Aspire X3950 with Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

I purchased a "RAYGO eXtreme Hard Drive enclosure (SATA to USB)" and installed within it a 1 Terabite HDD that was working (and can work) flawlessly in a different PC. The HDD is about 85% empty.

For no apparent reason, most of the time when I (try to) transfer large files to the external HDD, the latter stops working. However, I've been able to transfer (blocks of) files of more thann 30 Gb without a hitch.

When the external HDD does stops working, Device Manager shows "Unknown device". When it works, Device Manager shows two instances of "USB Mass Storage Device". If I restart the PC, most of the time the external HDD is ignored and not even the "Unknown device" entry appears.

The closest thing to a solution I found at "Problems may occur when you try to transfer files to or from a device that is connected to a USB 2.0 hub", where they state:

Code:
Resolution for Windows 7

To resolve this problem in Windows 7, add a EnHcSoftRetry registry entry with
a DWORD value of 1 under the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\PCI\<hw id>\<instance id>\Device Parameters

Note To obtain <hw id> and <instance id>, open the Device Manager property
page for each EHCI USB host controller, click the Details tab, and then select
Device Instance Path in the list. Most systems have only one or two EHCI
host controllers, so this should not be too difficult.
To no avail, I've tried placing the EnHcSoftRetry registry entry both as part of the "Device Parameters" entry and as a sub of it. I've tried using DWORD and QWORD to no avail, too. I'm sure I'm screwing up here somehow.

Any guidance on this issue will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Transfering files to or from a device connected to a USB 2.0 hub

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Transfering files to or from a device connected to a USB 2.0 hub

Does the external USB connected hard drive work OK if connected directly to a USB port on the PC? If it does, that suggests the USB hub is the problem. Is the USB hub a "powered" hub (has its own power supply) or a non-powered hub that uses the PC's USB port power? Generally, a powered hub is best, especially if the external device gets its power solely from the USB.

I'm getting a stop error 0x0000007B Inaccessible boot device error when starting win2k.
This started when I removed a hdd with win2k on it from an old pc and put it into a new pc running winxp in order to transfer important files to the new pc.
When the new pc was started up the win2k disk could not be accessed. I received a message saying that the disk was not formated.
When I put the win2k hdd into the original pc I received that stop error. I could not get win2k to boot in regular, safe mode, last known good config. or via the recovery counsel using the automat option (I dont have recovery disks).
The original files appear to still be intact but the only way I could view them was by using a ntfs partition tool.

I would really like to be able to copy thoes files off the win2k hdd and if possible get the original win2k pc restored with all the files intact. I've already tried using the help from microsofts web site and couldnt solve anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated

--note-- On the microsoft website they had several fixes using the regedit but thoes didnt work because winxp couldnt see anything on the win2k disk.

-edit: both hdd's are ntfs format

My old laptop died when my baby spilled juice on it. It does not come on at all. Is there a way I can connect it to my new laptop and download my pictures. My wife is going crazy because we don't have back ups. My old one is an Inspiron 6000, the new one is an Inspiron 1525. Thank you for any help you can provide. Would prefer a free method.

A:Transfering old files

You will need to remove the hard drive and either buy an external case for it or at least an adapter to run it from USB. If the laptop doesn't come on, you need to get power to the drive somehow, so it looks like it will have to come from an external source.

The cheapest way to do it would be to buy an adapter to connect it to some obliging friend's desktop internally. Those only cost around $5 some places.

It would be a good idea for you to learn some methods of backing up computers. A disk imaging program would caot less than $50 and save you lots of repair costs and recovery costs (as well as heartache) if a machine became unbootable.

Moving programs from one drive to another will cause problems!! You need to uninstall and reinstall to the new drive . If program A is installed on C:\, uninstall and reinstall on D:\ !!
Moving personal files can use Drag and Drop however!!

My system will not automatically transfer my downloaded media files to my media player; how do I correct this problem. My computer is an old school dell and runs with a windows xp operating system. Wanting to get the downloaded music into my media playlist, please help!

A:transfering files

Hi Allison and welcome to TSG.

As far as I can recall there is nothing in Windows XP itself to automatically download files to a media player. I believe you you need some type of media manager/player software installed and running on the PC to detect when a hardware player is attached to the computer and then sync the files.

Not sure how much this Microsoft article will help you since you do not give any details about your hardware player or any installed player/manager software.

I have a 160 GB HD with the OS and data files on one partition. I am wanting to buy a 500 GB HD, put my OS on one partition and my data files on another. I would use the 500 GB for my main drive and use the 160 GB for my backups. == Here is what I have in mind to get the right files in the right place. ==

A) Make a second partition on the 160 and put my data files in one and the OS in the other.

B) I can then make two partitions on the 500 and clone the files to it.

C) Then I format the 160 with two partitions and use that for my backup drive.

Does this sound like the right way to go about this? Thanks,

Hello mate.

Just use Macrium to do the "move"; I also use the 'move to' option of this a lot, it works great, especially with really large files.

That sounds like a good plan.

I am trying to transfer folders and files from an old hard drive, to a new SSD hard drive.

The particular folder transfer says 147 files are too long. All the files have the same words = Name Timesheet then a long date. States that the file names are too long.

I went folder for folder transferring everything over. It all comes down to one Folder called Invoices which itself has 6 sub-folders, but I transferred it all over except this folder "1. monthly timesheets for year 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, to August 25, 2012" I believe within this folder is 147 files.

An odd thing about this is, if I click properties on both windows. SSD is 302 files, 119 folders, old HD is 362 files 103 folders.

This does not add up.

I think perhaps the folder itself name is too long, or are the file names within that folder too long.
I added a picture. I hope it helps. I've been pondering what to do about this for some time. I am stuck, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If the old computer had password protected accounts, you may need to go through a "taking ownership'" process of gaining access to the files when connected to the working computer. Microsoft has Knowledge Base articles that explain the steps that need to be done.

Here is the article for Windows XP:

I am presently trying to transfer files from one Windows XP computer to another. I just purchased the Belkin Transfer Cable which seemed to be working fine til I get almost to the end of the download. I then get and error message (Error 1304.error writing to file) it has a lot of other stuff in between then it says: Verify you have access to that directory. I can't afford to take the computer to the shop, so if anyone is out there that can give me some sort of information on this I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

A:Transfering Files

While I'm not familiar with the Belkin cable and it's software, it appears that you may not have permission to access the directory that you're trying to copy from.

A workaround is to move the files to the Shared Documents directory and try it from there (this has to do with the permissions in a workgroup defaulting to those of the Guest account).

I will be needing to move some files from a computer running 98 to one running xp. Is it possible to just pull the old hd and temporarily put it into the new computer to copy the needed files? And would it be better to have the programs needed to open these files on the new computer before transferring them? Thanks

A:transfering files from 98 to xp

I see no issue in using temporarily the disk in a slave position on the XP box. As to whether it is better to install the application software first is a question of where the application stores the data files. If it uses its own directory structure and not the user profile I would install the programs first.

My question is, what is the best way to do this, and are the 95 files compadable with vista??

A:transfering files

Copy these files to a external device and then copy them to the new machine.
The compatibility issues are NOT with Vista but the programs needed to open, edit and save them with.

You will need to get the programs installed on the Vista machine. You MAY be able to use the same program versions from the old machine, BUT, then you may not.

You can remove the hard disk and put it into a cheap USB enclosure and copy files from it. You can also buy an adapter and connect it to an IDE port on another computer.

Finally, you can boot from a live boot CD like Puppy Linux and copy the files across a network.

Yes, you can copy the files to your external drive, plug that into your new computer, then scan the external drive.

One thing you ought to do first is do Windows Update on the new computer. That may close up some security problems that viruses and malware seek.

If you have both PCs at the same location, you can make use of a CROSSOVER CABLE.This looks like an ordinary Ethernet cable but has interchanged wiring to allow exchange of data in such cases. You simply ask for a crossover cable at your computer store.Make sure both PCs have an Ethernet port for this to work. Now simply link the Ethernet ports on both PCs using the crossover cable.Note that both PCs need to have the same workgroup name "My Network Places" and that they have different computer names. Also make sure, your PC can be accessed by other computers. All you have to do now, is look for your computer(computer name) through "My Network Places" on your sister's PC and your now connected to it. You can access the content your sharing on your PC and copy them to your sister's hard disk. You'll find plenty of tutorial/guides on how to set up two PCs for transferring files using a crossover cable.

Hi and Welcome to TSF.

The "error" that you received is not an error at all but VIsta's User Access Control (UAC) feature. It is simply letting you know that a system-altering change is about to occur. If you are on an admin account, simply click on Continue, otherwise enter the admin password.

This is about the area that you are writing the files to, not where they are coming from.

If you have additional questions, please ask!

Is it possible for me to transfer the data from the hard drive of that computer to my new computer?
I just need to transfer some word documents and MP3 files.

Hi and Welcome,
Can you get it to boot from a CD? If so you could use Ubuntu (Linux) to rescue those files to external media. Guide with screenshots here: http://www.techsupportforum.com/alt...use-ubuntu-superos-recover-files-windows.html

The version of Ubuntu has changed so colours on new Ubuntu may vary from those shown in the screenshots but the process is the same.

Hope this helps?

Richard

I purchased a new computer and want to transfer files from old drive to new drive. I put the old drive in the new machine as a slave drive.

If I have the same windows(XP Home) on slave and host drive and want to transfer files from my old drive(slave) to host drive(host), can I just transfer ALL files from slave to host, overwriting existing windows and application files?

Thanks for any help!

If all you want is to have all the information on your original drive moved to your new drive, then you want to use some software that will "ghost" the information over. This will mean that all of your original Windows settings and programs will remain as they have, but now reside on the new drive.

I have used a free utility from Seagate called DiskWizard 2002 which makes everything easy as pie. It is made for Seagate drives, but should work for any standard IDE hard drive. It did for my 2 Quantum drives. The program is about 7 MBs to download, but is well worth it. It provides step-by-step instructions for everything, and even when it shuts down, it first gives you the opportunity to print out the specific instructions first, so you don't have to rely on your memory to do everything properly.

Good Luck, and come back if you have any more questions concerning this.

So I'm trying to pull files off my old XP hard drive. Unfortunately though, I cannot seem to get past the security settings. I've tried forcing ownership, but it seems like it's simply ignoring my changes. I've tried changing the security settings to allow "everyone" full control of the drive, to no avail. Just trying to copy my old files off this drive.

Any help would be awesome.

I am trying to copy Microsoft Works onto a CD to use on another laptop. When I open the file from the CD it does not show a set up file or give me an option to run. When I try to use the file it says applications are missing or have been renamed and recomends reloading. Do you have some ideas I might want to try?? Thank you.

i recently bought a new laptop and i want to transfer some music and video files from my older desktop to the laptop. The desktop does not have a cd burner. The desktop does have a wireless card though as does the laptop. Im looking for the cheapest and easiest way to transfer. Im thinking that maybe i should enable sharing on the desktop and connect via wireless. I just dont know how i should go about it with out. Would doing an adhoc connection be better?

Please suggest a possible way to transfer..and how i would go along doing it!
Thanks
