M93z Spectre BIOS update

Q: M93z Spectre BIOS update

Running Win10 Pro 1709, the FEKT9DA update for the M93z slowed my system way down.I reverted the BIOS, things sped up again...I applied Microsoft's microcode update from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4090007/intel-microcode-updatesand I didn't lose speed (at least in my usage) and I am now fully protected.Just an FYI for anyone who has these machines.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Is it safe to update the bios to that version, is there any disadvantages or slow down the system etc., any new features like a new logo on the POST screen? And how would I revert back to FEKT84BUS?

Recently bought a new msi gt62vr 7re gaming laptop and I'm quite terrified about the news...What should I do?Should I even worry?

MSI has just released a new BIOS today with:

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; ;; ;; ;; MSI BIOS Release Notes ;; ;; ;; ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

Model : MS-16L2 (KBL)
MKT Name : GT62VR 7RD / GT62VR 7RE ;****************************************************************************; New BIOS : E16L2IMS.30C
ROM CheckSum : 2FCDH
Release Date : 2018/1/9

;--------------------------- Description ------------------------------------;

Update CPU microcode.

But I'm honestly quite scared of doing it after going through the instructions...What should I do?

Do you think I should even bother and risk updating the BIOS?I'm kind of thinking that the risk that I break something is higher than the risk that I get hacked with the Spectre vulnerability...I've never ever updated BIOS and I'm unable to take my laptop to any technician because of my disability.

A:Meltdown/Spectre BIOS update

MSI has a BIOS update (version E16L2IMS.30C) which addresses the recently discovered security flaw in Intel. ARM, and AMD processors.  This was released on 01/09/2018.  Is this the update you are considering?

How did you become aware of this update?

It was recently announced that Intel (and other manufacturers)  has a large security problem with their CPUs.  The BIOS update offered by MSI addresses this issue, Microsoft has released a update to address this as well.

Updating the BIOS (also known as flashing the BIOS) was fraught with potential problems which left enthusiasts wary of updating.  It had become the accepted norm not to update the BIOS unless there was a hardware change which required a BIOS update to resolve the issue.  But as you have read above there are now more important reasons to update the BIOS.  It is easier to do now, but you need to have a firm understanding of the steps involved in the process.  Have you read through the instructions in the manual for this computer?

i'm told by various other forums and newsletters that along with the Microsoft update - installed yesterday - we also need a BIOS update (from manufacturers) with some kind of code from Intel, to fix the above flaws in our CPUs.
i searched the Toshiba downloads and updates page and the only BIOS updates are from 2012.
any news on Toshiba releasing a solution for this?

I know this isn't the newest model, but I just purchased it new (on offer) by mid 2015, so I just have it for a good 2 years! I don't see it on the list of affected models, while it CLEARLY IS affected. Will we see a BIOS update to target the Spectre vulnerability? I have always taken Lenovo for giving good support for their hardware. Surely I will have to consider a different brand, if I cannot count on security updates for hardware just a little over 2 years old. (I'm taking suggestions as to which manufacturer is giving better support). At least put all models affected on the list, and just admit that they will not receive an update. So at least we know what we can expect!

My computer gives won't boot Windows 10 anymore.It seems that it may have stopped working after a Windows update.I get a bsod referencing a problem within iaStorAV.sys and/or iaStorA.sysA Google search recommended doing a BIOS update.Since I can't boot the computer, I need to use another computer to put the BIOS files on a USB.I downloaded sp77656.exe, and  I get an error message "IHISI : Get support mode fail in SMI !" and "BIOS did not support InsydeFlash!".I tried manually extracting the files from the EXE archive and put the 01886.bin file on USB.When I try using that to update the BIOS using the built in tool available from the boot menu, I get a message saying ""the selected image file was not available" along with a message saying that a signature file is needed. Some questions:- Is a BIOS update the correct solution for this problem?- If so, how can I update the BIOS?

We are attempting to automate the BIOS upgrades to address CVE-2017-5715. This has been no problem thus far on our other Lenovo models that have released updates. However, with the X250 (both touch and non-touch) we receive the following error:   error 180 - bios part numbers do not match It actually does not matter what version of the BIOS we try to flash, lower or higher. The embedded controller will update through the automation but the BIOS will not. The weird thing is if you manually run WINUPTP64.exe it will update without issue. This is not a realistic solution with the number of devices we have. I will say that our X250s have an OEM only BIOS version installed which I suspect might be the issue?   1.19 1.19 (N10ET40W) 1.13 (N10HT14W) For factory use

I'll add that this BIOS version is on at least 435 of our X250s.

Hi Folks,    I have a spectre X360 and I am really happy with it.  Great product.  I recently updated the bios and it was really nice to be rid of the glowing keyboard light LED. There is an issue that has popped up though which is incredibly frustrating, like incredibly annoying, and I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this.  The keyboard response to typing a double letter (such as the t in letter) has gone down.  In other words my typing speed is now limited because the keyboard isn't as sensitive as it was prior to the bios update.  Does anyone know of a setting somewhere where I can increase the sensitivity of the keyboard so I'm not constantly going back to correct a missing double letter?  Please! argh it sucks so bad.  It has ruined my experience with this machine.  -Sam

It also shows you how to restore the default setting that could help as well.Hope this fixes your issue.Thanks.

Sadly I installed the [now withdrawn] GRET54WW (1.31 ) BIOS update which patched the Spectre vulnerability on my X1 Carbon 20A7 model a couple of weeks ago. I've since been experiencing spurious reboots when coming out of sleep and random BSODs --- which are obviously the reasons for the update being withdrawn. Is there a way to downgrade the BIOS to a prior level? Hello to the BleepingComputer community,First of all I'm sorry I haven't finished some of the steps from the Preparation Guide. It's because these steps require a reboot (e.g. Step 6: Disable your CD Emulation Software - DeFogger will ask me to reboot the machine), and I have a bad feeling about the question if it is safe to reboot in my situation: I'm not sure if I have a type of malware which is ready to infect the BIOS - if it is so, then it could infect it much easier during the reboot process.- If there is a good way to find out what is the problem (and fix the BIOS threat part if it really is present) without rebooting / shutting down this PC, or at least without booting from this hard drive (which I feel is probably infected), then please tell me what should I do.- If you know a place / forum where I can get a specialized help for this (seemingly BIOS-malware related) situation, please tell me where I could go.- If there is no way to move forward, I'll go ahead and risk the reboot, and follow the other steps (steps 6 to 10) in the Preparation Guide, no problem.I kindly ask you to please read below the details of the problem as it occured to me, and the things I have tried so far.The PC is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core BE-2350 2.1GHz, Motherboard Biostar TA690G AM2 (with AWARD BIOS), 4GB RAM, 200GB SATA HDD, and an ASUS EAH4870 card added a few years ago.It's with WinXP SP3, AVG Free 2012, (standard) Windows Firewall, and it's behind a router.I ... I have a homebuilt workstation using an Intel motherboard and an Intel Processor (Sandy Bridge Xeon and S1200BTL). Am I just...completely out of luck for updates to address Meltdown and Spectre because this didn't come from an OEM, or will Intel release updates for their own hardware?

Thanks folks

A:Meltdown/Spectre Firmware/Bios for Homebuilt PC

No, it will depend of the company that made your motherboard.

For example, I just had a look at ASUS, and they are releasing BIOS updates with microcode updates (released by Intel). https://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1035291
But you could be out of luck, when your motherboard manufacturer doesn't release new BIOS updates.

Although your OS could also help. What OS do you run on your workstation, Windows or Linux?
