Can I replace the HDD on an IDEAPAD S10-2 by a SSD?

Q: Can I replace the HDD on an IDEAPAD S10-2 by a SSD?

Hello,I've got a rather old (and lame) Ideapad S10-2. But it still works - I upgraded the memory from 1GB to 2GB when I started to use it some years ago. No other HW changes so far.My question is: Would I get a "real" growth in speed if I replace the HDD with an SSD? Has anybody done that and can tell me it it's worth the time and money? And if yes: Could I simply clone the HDD to the SSD (with the SSD-manufacturer's tools) and replace the HDD with the SSD? Would I need to change/update the BIOS?Thanks for all ideas! Titus

Preferred Solution: Can I replace the HDD on an IDEAPAD S10-2 by a SSD?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi diplomat  ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Recommended harddrive as provided in the FRU list (item 13 page 95) are 5400 rpm .
Similarly newer systems nowadays may be able to use 7200 rpm as integrated technogy is set to a more faster storage device like Hybrid SSHD amongs the spinning harddrive vesus SSD with no movable parts similar to this case  .

Offered SSHD from the hardware manual list would still run faster than the 7200 as a better upgrade even if rpm is 5400 taking note of different mediums SSHD can use.

Hope this help answer your query.

Hi there, Malshafey ?

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

Regarding your question the reply is yes, you can upgrade your laptop with extra SSD Drive from Samsung.

Better solution for SSD is Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB M.2 SSD (MZ-N5E250BW) which one you can easily obtain through Amazon with a normal price. Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB M.2 SSD (MZ-N5E250BW) AMAZON

Hard disk drive ? 2.5-inch, 7 mm SATA III ? 500 GB / 1 TB, 5400rpm ? HYBRID 1 TB 5400rpm SSHD (8G) ? SSD, NGFF, 128 GB / 256 GB / 512 GB

Additional important information:

1) If you are going to upgrade PC by yourself (install a new RAM and SSD), your warranty won't be voided.

2) Installing an SSD Samsung you will need a screw to attach SDD to laptop, the screw is not included in SSD pack, so there are 2 solutions, you can find or order screw from Amazon or another shop (see laptop manual attached here to see the screw type) or, you can remove 1 srew from HDD drive frame to hold SSD (3 screws are enogh to hold HDD).

Update us how it goes.

I know there's such a thing as a hybrid drive, but it looks like in some cases you can replace a laptop's standard SATA drive with BOTH a solid state drive and a standard SATA. Is this possible with the IdeaPad z570, and if so, what do I need?  Thanks in advance!

Hello, I would like to replace the default SSD (120GB) of my Lenovo Y700-15ISK 80NV laptop with a larger one.. The problem is, that Windows is installed on the current SSD. With the help of OneKey Recovery I have created a backup file of Windows (which I have resetted to factory state) on a USB stick. Is this sufficient for a reinstallation of Windows on the new SSD? Also, I would like to know whether replacing the SSD would have any effects on my warranty. Thanks in advance!

I do not know what this laptop is supposed to be able to do but I do know that it is not able to do the things that others claim that it can. Tomorrow is the cut off date for my ability to return it for a full refund or replacement so could anyone please tell me: What is this device supposed to be able to do battery wise? According to a review it can do 9 hours of constant web surfing. Mine can do 7 hours of no screen turn off and no sleep (so constantly on), with battery saver and power saver mode both on, and about an hour and a half of web surfing spread out sporadically throughout the 7 hours. If I constantly web surf it gets maybe 4 to 5 hours of battery. With sporadic use and letting it sleep and turn it's screen off it gets well over 24 hours of battery life. Is this how it is supposed to be? 7 hours of constantly being on with only low, sporadic actual use and over 24 hours if use is low and sporadic and it is allowed to sleep when not being used? Or is it really supposed to be able to get 9 hours of constant web surfing? If it is supposed to get 9 hours of constant use then I clearly have a bad battery and need to take it back! But the Lenovo page for this device says 7 hours and that this depends on many factors, so it sounds like my battery may be just fine and whomever got 9 hours has a lot of luck and that is not the norm for this device. However I have no idea! Please can anyone who knows tell me before tomorrow night so I don'... Read more

I splashed some tea on the keyboard of my 510-15ISK Laptop (ideapad) model 80SR and now some of the keys have stopped working. I am in the UK so this is the layout/style of keyboard it uses (not the US layout). The backlight still works fine, though, and the laptop itself works normally, it is only some keys which have stopped working. I have fixed this problem on other laptops by simply replacing the keyboard, but on my ideapad the keyboard is internal (it doesn't pop out) so I don't know how to do it. Furthermore, I can't find any information about the keyboard for this laptop anywhere on the internet: not on google, not on youtube, not even on this Lenovo website. How/where can I repair/replace the keyboard? Will it be expensive? I have seen that sometimes only individual keys need to be fixed, not the entire keyboard, could this be an option? My laptop is still under warranty if that means anything. Thanks for any help.

Hi all,

The laptop in question is a Toshiba Satellite A105-S4334. A few weeks ago, it got dropped right on its corner with the power plug still in it; the little metal plug of the AC adapter is now slightly crooked, and the power jack has a little chip off the plastic part of it.

Anyway, after this mishap, it worked fine for another 3, 4 weeks, and then suddenly this week, it's refusing to power up. Its battery has been shot for a while (can't hold a charge), and I've been using it with the battery out. Why the sudden refusal to boot?

I took the whole thing apart---minus the little chip, the power jack looks totally fine and cosmetically sound. Put the whole thing back together, taking care to check that plugs were snug---still no power.

Stuck in the crappy battery; booted just fine (and then shut itself down after like 2 minutes).

How likely is it that it's the power jack which is broken? And why did it take this long to crap out, if it IS broken?

A new one of those silly jacks costs over $20 on eBay, so I want to make sure that it's the jack before I just up and buy one. Of course, if it's the AC adapter that's broken, that would cost even more! Bah.

Input?

A:Replace the power jack or replace the adapter?

AND/OR inside the case the the jack is soldered directly to the motherboard. Is also possible that
1) It's already cracked
2) If not yet, it's gonna crack

So look to see what connection looks like between power jack and motherboard, If you feel u wanna/can re-solder yourself or the typically price to redo the whole power thing seems to run $125 parts/labor/warranty if you take it somewhere. So how much is it all worth to you?

For some reason W7 has decided to change 'Copy and Replace' with 'Move and Replace' when picking a file up with the left mouse and dragging it to another folder where an old version of the file exists.

My Excel SS is in two places: My desktop and USB which I use for backup. I would simply open the folder on the USB pick up the file on the desktop with the left mouse and drag it to the USB folder. Then I would get the message 'Copy and Replace'.. But not anymore it's become 'Move and Replace'.

I know I can 'Copy and Replace' by holding down the Ctrl key but I dont want to.

It looks like there should be a simple answer

Can anyone help? I swear I didnt change anything.

Hello...

[I need to know if there is a function...perhaps a Macro or Query...or a more complex 'Find & Replace'...that can accomplish the following...'cause my database is huge; & I'm hoping not to do this manually]:

I keep an Access database for my homeowners' association on the condition & conformity of 24 different exterior attributes, for about 2400 townhomes. The Board of Directors wants to move away from using the term "Grandfathered", which is distinguished by the acronym "GF" in the database column that shows conformity (labeled IAW). We use this database to generate annual architectural reports for our 10,000 residents.

Our board wants the entry "GF" replaced with a "Y"...they want the GF entry removed from the report completely; & they're serious about it.

Now...I have already created a Query that has located all the GF entries in their various columns of various records...which our Board wants me to use in an internal "in-office" database (in order to keep track of what attributes actually were grandfathered originally...as a reference for our field inspector when he inspects the townhomes).

But we also want to create an unassuming symbol on the report...perhaps an ~ or a *...something that will alert the inspector to an attribute that once was grandfathered, on his field report. [This is to be done so that he will not
be flying blind when he comes across a non-con... Read more

Hi

I got a 2nd hand Lenovo Ideapad 100S. It came with Win10 installed but had someone elses profile and data.
(I am not sure if it originally had Win8.1 when it was shipped, there is no rollback option anymore)

My preference is to wipe the current installation completely by downloading Win10 and installing a clean copy off USB.

I also usually prefer to delete all partitions, including recovery because future reinstallations can be done from scratch via USB. (I don't need the option of reinstalling from recovery partitions , the extra space is more important)

I see a warning in the user guide however .....
"Do not delete or modify the Recovery Partition on a WIMBoot-enabled computer. If the Recovery Partition is deleted or modified, you may not be able to restore Windows to the factory status. For computer models on which WIMBoot is enabled, deleting the Recovery Partition may cause Windows to fail to start. How can I determine whether the Windows running on my computer is WIMBoot enabled? WIMBoot technology is normally enabled on copies of Windows 10 Update running on SSD (or eMMC) -only computer models."

What is the best way to do this?

Install a clean copy and remove the partition by booting off a USB, or should I not do this?

A:Ideapad 100s - Win10 clean installation on ideapad...

 Hi larrens ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

It's a good thing you posted first before proceeding with any clean installation.
Not sure what the Machine Number is to verify the details and specifications of your system.

But if you have a pc with a Windows Image Boot (or WIMBoot) you may not want to choose a clean installation.
This new deployment of installation is compressing part of a big OS file so that you can have an operating system that can only take small spaces intended for small storages (SSD).

Best option to wipe out previous owners profile is a have a fresh out of the box image is using the Puch button Factory reset (Novo key similar to Item 7 page 1). Simply shutdown the system and use the button to turn on, System Recovery option would provide One key recovery from initial backup to do it.

WIM boot are usually created thru OEM depot authorized by Microsoft . DIY for WIMboot maybe a bit complicated.
Click on underlined links for further review.

Hope this answered your query.

We have a TON of text based INI files for our companies software deployment scripts.

We also have a TON of people who use different ways to deploy the same software. On one server alone we can have a bunch of different ways people install E.G.

msiexec.exe /quiet /norestart /i \\dfs\dfsshare\SAV\Symant~1.msi
msiexec.exe /quiet /norestart /i <qt/>\\server\share\WIN32\Symantec Client Security.msi<qt/>
msiexec.exe /quiet /norestart /i \\server\share\SAV\WIN32\Symantec Client Security.msi
msiexec.exe /quiet /norestart /i <qt/>\\dfs\dfsshare\SAV\Symantec Client Security.msi<qt/>

and so on down the line.

I LIKE the abilities of Ecobyte Replace Text 2.2 but the problem is I have to type in the whole line as it is in the file to then replace it with the new one for the new deployment.

What I want to do is have a search based on PART of the line so I can then put in Symant~1.msi and Symantec Client Security.msi and replace the ENTIRE line with a new line.

Is there any multi file utility that allows you to search for part of a text line but replace the entire text line?

Ok now its been a while since my pc has not been working. Ive had it for just over a year now. One day i turned it on and it would get to the Bios splash page but it would not go any further. There were no beeps nothing. All fans run, and from what i remember hard drives would start spinning too.

I thought maybe it was a PSU problem as the PSU would have very subtle flickering sounds, almost like sparking cables. However after taking the PSU to a technician they said it was working fine. This cost me 50 AUD! What he then told me was that it may be the mobo. But before i go and send it to a proper technician and fork out X amount of money id like to get your opinion.

As i mentioned above. The pc turns on, doesnt boot past the BIOS splash screen and just stays there. There are odd noises from the PSU. Here is my setup:

ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe
AMD Athlon64 4000+
PC-3200 (2x1gb) CAS2 Corsair DDR mem
Radeon X800 GTO (Iceturbo 2)
Thermaltake 680w power supply
Maxtor 300gb Maxline III
WD Raptor 36GB
Creative Audigy 2 ZS

I have not had the guts to take anything out and test them individually. But has anyone had or heard of this problem before? What could it be about the motherboard that would also make the PSU make that noise? Is it just a safety mechanism of the PSU?

SOS

A:To replace or not to replace.. that is the question.

Hi and welcome to Techspot!!

Test the RAM sticks individually. One of them might be bad. You can use Memtest86 to try them out.

Also, try them in different memory slots. That sometimes helps.

Sounds as though it thinks it's needs starting from a network and that would make me wonder if it's been taken over remotely so when you do get it started, it might have a major malware infection. Tap the Delete, Function 2 or whichever other key you need to go into BIOS or Setup and seek out Boot Options or similar and make sure the order is set to boot from hard disk first.

Have a friend with a 9-month-old Dell Inspiron laptop who's had nothing but problems with Win XP. We've deleted the main partition and reinstalled XP, but problem (inability to maintain a modem connection) persists. It may be just a bad modem, and Dell is sending a new one, but he just doesn't like XP, and asked if it's possible to put Win 98 on the computer. I use Win 98, so am not familiar with XP, but know that XP uses NTFS instead of a FAT, and can't find anything that says whether or not it's possible to reformat the drive for a FAT-based Win 98 system. Is it, and if so, how (i.e., can I just boot to the command prompt, type "format c:", and hit enter)?

If its the power supply fan, its essential. If you cook the power supply, the HP only replacements are very expensive, and standard ones usually do not fit.

Hello, On my motherboard this morning when removing a faulty graphics card, the little white clamp at the end of the pci express slot broke. Is there anyway to replace or fix this? I was thinking of gluing it somehow but the last thing I need is for the glue to melt and cause more problems than it solved. If it involves sending it off to a technician does anyone know the avg cost to replace the white clamp or complete pci express slot? If you need more info on what type of pci-express slot it is it was holding a nvidia7900 gtx OC. I'm hoping I didn't just ruin the whole motherboard.

I don't think that can be fixed. I've never really seen this happen so I don't know for sure but I think u will need a new mobo.

At random, XP will restart on its own. The computer was built less than 2 years ago and I'm not quite sure if it's a software or hardware issue. AMD 2600+, 1.9 ghz, 512mb RAM, windows XP, radeon 9600 graphics card.

I find the computer crashes when it's put under a heavy workload. For instance, I opened Spy Bot S&D to rule out any infections and within 30 seconds of running the application the computer restarted. This occured back to back just moments ago. Other times I am using WORD or browsing. This has been occuring for more than 4 months now.

I've ran a CPU application to max it out and again the computer restarts. It occurs everytime I run the program.

I also monitored my RAM while it performed and only 50% was being utilized.

How do I know it's the CPU and not the Motherboard or HD?

Thanks!

A:Do I need to replace my CPU?

Spobot Killed the Computer in the Den with the Fireplace Poker

This isn't "Clue" we're paying, you say?

Spybot uses 100% of the CPU. Your box could be entering thermal cutoff.
Use canned air to clean out the CPU/ heatsink, and just for good measure the rest of the insides as well.
Find out if your board has hardware monitoring and find what the critical zone temperatures are. You may have to install either the board manufacturers monitoring software or a utility like "Speedfan', available here at Techspot.

I recently built a co-worker a computer with parts from Tiger Direct. I had everything up and running and made sure the BIOS was updated and dropped it off to her. She calls me up saying that It keeps BSOD'ing. I take it back to try and figure it out. I thought at first it may be printer drivers she installed or her antivirus. I was not able to save that version of windows because it was stuck in the windows startup recovery loop and could not fix the problem. I installed a fresh copy of Vista Home Premium 32 bit to another HDD to make sure the HDD was good. (I know, who uses vista right...the disk was sitting on my desk and was convenient haha). I waited for about 3 hours and nothing until it randomly Blue Screened once. I've ran memtest86 and it found no errors. Here's what I got:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033

Additional information about the problem:
BCCode: c000021a
BCP1: 98F3D4C8
BCP2: C0000001
BCP3: 00000000
BCP4: 00000000
OS Version: 6_0_6000
Service Pack: 0_0
Product: 768_1

Any ideas guys? Thanks in advance

A:Need to replace RAM?

You can boot from the Vista DVD and run the Memory Test to see if it has any memory errors. From there you can decide if you need to replace the RAM. You could also reseat the RAM (take it out, put it back in making sure it is in good).

Hello, I'm looking for advice on what I should do with my old machine here, I want better performance out of it and I have a slightly more modern motherboard that I pulled from a system that once ran Vista.

Current Motherboard:
Type: Intel J2E1
CPU: Intel Celeron 2.80GHz Northwood 0.13um Technology
Chipset: Intel 845G (64MB Graphics Memory)
RAM: 1GB DDR @ 133MHz (2-3-3-6)

Replacement Canidate:
Type: SY-K7VME
CPU: AMD Athlon 2.00GHz 2600
Graphics: nVidia GeForce 6200 128MB AGP
RAM: Will be useing same RAM

Will the replacement make my system perform better, or should I stick with my current setup and wait until I get the money for a new system?

A:Replace or not replace?

After a series of unstable voltage problem, I couldn?t get into Windows normally (only got into the desktop once, yet shut down within a second following a warning message), so I loaded a Windows CD to the blue Windows Setup stage, I got a message saying ?File setupdd.sys could not be loaded. The error code is 4.? I restarted, I then got ?System 32\DRIVERS\pci.sys is damaged or missing.? in a dark screen. Is my disk still OK? Do I need to replace the HD? Thanks for the answer!

A:Do I need to replace the HD?

Maybe not. Lets focus on your "low voltage problem". Bad power can cause data corruption. Bad power can also permanently kill off hardware, such as a hard drive. We need to first establish if you solved your power issues, and how.

Did you replace the Power Supply? If so, please post manufacturer, model # and rated power output of your current PSU. If not, post the voltages as reported in BIOS.

My P50 died. The repair center failed to fix it, so they are sending me a new machine. To avoid 3 weeks delay, I am getting a standard model they have in stock. This model has 500 GB spinner HDD (it comes with Windows 7 Pro preinstalled). I need to remove it and replace with M.2 PCIe NVMe 1 TB SSD from my old machine (it runs Windows 10 pro and has all my documents). I have found manuals and guides how to do it from the mechanical standpoint, but I am still not sure about the right sequence and changes to BIOS. What should I do? Options:          A) Don't turn on the computer. Instead, just unscrew HDD, insert M.2 PCIe SSD, only then turn the computer on.          B) Turn the computer on with HDD first, enter BIOS, change from which kind of a disk and which slot it boots, only then unscrew HDD, insert M.2 PCIe SSD and after that turn it on again?          C) Something else? My guess is that if the machine would come with M.2 PCIe SSD, I could easily replace new with the old one without any hassle, but because it is a different kind of a disk in a different slot, I am concerned I might run into problems.
