Important Updates - go to PC Settings-in Safe Mode??

Q: Important Updates - go to PC Settings-in Safe Mode??

Hi, just wondering if I'm the only one to have noted that MS offers to install pending Windows Updates on the Safe Mode login screen in an identical fashion to normal mode.

...er.. did you notice the inconsistency?

Situation: Set Windows Updates to notify, not download. Require password to log in. With pending windows updates, go to safe mode. MS use exactly the same screen as in normal mode, including the notification of updates and instruction to go to PC Settings to install them.

...er.. but it's Safe Mode... please sir, I haven't got an internet connection...

Oops?

Preferred Solution: Important Updates - go to PC Settings-in Safe Mode??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My laptop currently has all the default update setting checked so it installs all optional, recommended, and important updates. Is it okay to change the setting to install only important updates? What are the recommended and optional updates I will not be getting? What are the pros and cons of changing this setting?

I am wanting to do it because I do not want windows 10. I do actually already have the windows 10 update installed in my update list. It apparently downloaded in December. However, my laptop never upgraded to windows 10. I have read that for some people their computers randomly upgraded to windows 10 without them telling it to but for some people that never happens. I am hoping I can keep it from happening by changing my update setting to download important updates only. But I only want to do that if it won't cause any problems.

I do know I can uninstall and hide the windows 10 update number but in all the research I did, nearly everyone who said they did that said the update installed again anyway and there is actually no way to get rid of it.

Thank you :)

A:changing update settings to important updates only--help?

First of all, you don't need to Install Windows optional updates.
Secondly, you should change your Windows Update Setting to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them".

After you have changed the Windows Update Setting to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them", Windows Update will search again for available updates.
When the search is complete, look for KB3035583, and hide this update.

The Disadvantage is that you have to manually search for Windows Updates.
But the Advantage is that you have more control of which of the Windows Updates is being Installed on your Laptop.

A:changing update settings to important updates only--help?

I don't let it download anything myself, and I uncheck the box for give me recommended updates the same as important, these are my settings,

And with this tutorial I've set it to disable OS upgrades,

Upgrade to Windows 10 Update - Enable or Disable in Windows 7 or 8.1 - Windows 10 Forums

Not sure if you have pro version, if you do you can use either method, if you just have the home version then you can only use option one.

I haven't had anything forced on me and I am in control of what gets downloaded, I install them all anyway except for silverlight and skype.

You have to do it manually but at least you know when and what you are installing.

I'm not sure there is setting that you are looking for, only install important updates doesn't seem be an option.

Separating the recommended from important by unchecking that box in the blue outline will give you only important updates in the important section.

As for the W10 update already downloaded, I think there is a way to get rid of it, I can't remember right now I'm sure someone else will come along with more info.

Why do we get the option "Windows Updates. Important updates are available. Go to PC settings to install them" on the logon screen? Need to remove this option but without altering the update functionality. We are using SCCM for windows update.
Can you help how to remove it by GPO or any other option for large scale systems (5000+). At present the user cannot install the updates as it has been restricted. Attached the screen shot also.

A:Can't get Win updates or get into Safe Mode

No need for follow-up or help with this issue. It's not a malware problem. I had corrupt and missing files causing my problem. I worked with the Microsoft support team, and they helped me find the problem. Unfortunately, we couldn't get all the missing files. So, they are going to help me upgrade to Win 7.

I must say that they are rapidly changing the image of Microsoft from being an unresponsive software company to a customer focused company. I have never gotten such great service from any vendor, and at no cost to me. These guys went the extra mile for me. They were very responsive and skillful. And they are a Microsoft overseas outsource team. Forget what you heard about outsourced teams. They speak better English than some of us in the USA...very skillful and a job well done. :-)

Is there a way to force Windows to use the default monitor settings as used in Safe Mode, but when running in normal mode?
My Nvidia GE 6100 graphics began scrambling the screen. Safe mode works ok, but on normal startup, the screen is scrambled or goes fuzzy and everything freezes. I think it's a hardware problem (it started after I added memory) but I want to keep running until it can be fixed. I have updated the drivers but it did not change anything. I tried deleting the Nvidia driver, but Windows keeps finding more.

RobinGL

A:Using Safe Mode default monitor settings

When first boot up hit F8 right after the BIOS screen and choose "low resolution video mode" if it still scrambles the screen it may be a hardware issue with the RAM. I can't remember if it's a laptop card or a desktop card or both.. anyways, If you can get to the device manager quick enough uninstall the video card and choose "delete the driver software" when the dialog box pops up to prompt if you want to delete the driver. This should force windows to use the default VGA driver and then you can download the latest one, relatively speaking, from nVidias site. I would do this while the new RAM you added is out. Once you get the drivers updated plug in the new ram and see if the issues happens again. If it does, get different ram or get all new ram of equal types. I have seen Integrated GPUs freak out over different types(speeds)/sizes of ram..

Hiyas

I'm just wondering if there's any way to change your ip address in safe mode in winXP?

My reason for asking is i come across a lot of people that fail to activate their machines before the 30days, and when they come to me i normally just plug them into our network and activate them over our broadband conenction.

The problem i have now is we've recently changed servers and now have to have static addresses with two dns's to connect to the web. As you know your network doesn't appear in safe mode, and once you've been locked out you can't access Safe Mode with networking either.

Is there any way to even do the networking thing through the recovery console?

Thanks in advance

I've been working on my father's computer (an HP pavillion zv5000), and realized that he had some Windows XP updates to be installed, so I decided to download them. What I didn't realize at the time was that he hadn't installed any updates in almost 2 years (though Automatic Updates appear to be enabled). When I rebooted after the installations were complete, I could not start in Normal Mode.

When starting normally, I get a black screen with white writing saying that
there's been a problem with the computer (can't remember word-for-word), and gives me the option to start in safe mode, safe mode with networking, and another safe mode. It also offers to start up with the last settings that worked, or normal mode. When I try to boot up in normal mode, it sends me back to that same screen, and likewise when I try to boot with the last settings. Now it only works in Safe Mode.

I'm not really sure what's happened, and if it's related to the updates or if it could be a virus (I got a similar screen when my own computer had a virus a few years ago). I'd appreciate any and all help!

Thanks in advance

Acer 5252 - auto-processed Win7 Home Prem (64 bit) updates. System started running slowly - figured it was from some large games so deleted them and defragged - system progressively worse - no viruses detected. Started getting error when trying to CtrlAltDel to get to task mgr to see what processes were running - error was "The logon process was unable to display security and logon option...". Reboot brings up Windows with no errors but takes 5-10 min for anything to start, and then hangs again. Can only shut down with power button. Starting in Safe Mode (w/ or w/o Networking) works but restore points are missing, so can't revert (I had plenty of room so not sure why the old points were deleted).

Dragged out my old Acer 6530 - Win7 Home Prem (32 bit) - haven't used it since around Jan so it was several updates behind. Worked fine until Windows updates applied - then same behavior as the first laptop. Was able to revert back to prior Windows and problems were gone.

I've seen other people complain about the CtrlAltDel issue in the past, but not sure why it's hitting me now, especially on both 32 bit and 64 bit. I couldn't say definitively that was the only change on the 5252, but it was the Win update was the only thing changed on the 6530 last night.

I know there are security updates I need to put on, but I also need an operational laptop! Any ideas? I can't d/l any utilities on the problem laptop. I can run TSG SysInfo if you want ... Read more

I've booted into safe mode in windows 8.1 by setting the safe mode option in msconfig..

However, when I booted into safemode i realized that I've forgot my password because i usually use a pincode.

How to I get it out of safe boot again? - I've tried to access command prompt, but everything needs that password.

Please help, is there any way to force it to boot up normally again? ;(

- Thanks in advance

When it reboots into normal mode, won't you still need the password?

Hi, I would like to apologize in advance if this is a somewhat generic question.

I've had this computer (laptop) for several years now, and the computer became slower and slower until we decided that it was unusable and bought a new laptop.

However, I've turned on this computer on just for spite and discovered that it works perfectly fine in safe mode.

I've reinstalled windows XP, but although reinstalling xp helped for a little bit, the computer slowed down quickly in a few days.

What could be the reason the computer is so slow outside of safe mode?

P.S. I've trasferred some ram from another laptop onto this one, which was recognized by the computer and ran fine. I'm not sure if that could be the issue.

Thanks!

A:Computer is very slow in normal settings but fast in safe mode

A LOT many issues could cause a slow computer.
Check out this elaborate BC post which addresses almost all the issues. Once you have gone through the checklist and still have issues feel free to post back here. Let me know if you need help with any of the steps.

Hello to anyone who can give me a hand.
I was using safe mode to do my virus scan, etc..., and when i rebooted
into regular windows there were no users on the welcome screen, except
for the "Administrator" account thats supposed to only show up in safe
mode. (i have my other regular admin account hidden, so it doesn't
show up anyways, otherwise it would have), and all the limited
accounts are hidden. I fixed using system restore, but when i simply

I am running Windows XP sp2.

These are all the other things that are screwed up after returning to
regular Windows XP, but I think they all point to that windows still
thinks its in safe mode after the restart:
-all accounts show Windows Classic view (the grey start bar, etc)
-screen resolution is at regular resolution, not the one from safe
mode (which is samller)
-no accounts show up on welcome screen, except for the Administrator,
as mentioned.
-able to logon to limited and admin account using ctrl-alt-del method
at welcome screen.
-no services are loaded, except for the same ones that load in safe
mode (theyre the same ones that are running in safe mode, i checked):
-wont let me connect to internet/network.
-startup programs load, but my antivirus (Antivir) has its umbrella

loaded. Zone alarm works fine because it doesn't have a service.

HI all...

I had my computer in storage for 7 weeks (on a boat being shipped back to US from the Middle East) and just got it unpacked a few days ago.

It started normally (a BIG relief) then wanted to do updates...48 of them!! So I started the update process but after the updates it will not boot...not normally, not to safe mode. The PC ran a CHKDSK on its own but couldn't boot after the CHKDSK.

I did manage to get Startup Repair to run once and the machine restarted to the Windows splash screen then that disappeared and now all I get is a black screen with a mouse pointer which I can move but nothing to point it at.

I cannot get to Sys Restore, safe mode, AV programs, etc.

I DO have a brand new Win 7 disk I got in Dubai a few months ago after having a tech there rebuild the machine with a new HDD and more memory...but it says "OEM System Builder Pack intended for system builders ONLY"...I suppose I could do a clean install with that and I also have a complete backup on an external drive that I made just before leaving Dubai...butI don't want to do that unless I have to.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!!

Hello

A couple of days ago my laptop (Toshiba Satellite Pro A300, running XP Professional) became infected by "XP Defender 2011". In an attempt to be clever I tried to remove it myself using RKill, FixExe and then Malware Bytes. After managing to remove some infected Registry files and one infected file (see log below) there is no longer the Defender pop-up or block on the Firewall. However, when I try to run my laptop in Safemode I get a blue-screen message about there being a known virus on my system, my Automatic updates are blocked and my web browsers (Mozilla, IE) occasionally crash.

Problem started this morning, couldn't turn on the PC. No power. Checked cords and plugs ,monitor would turn on ,printer worked so it's nothing to do with powerboards, sockets, electricity. Waited 10 mins and tried again. The pc powered up to the windows log in screen. I left it and came back 20 mins later and the light behind the power on/off button had gone from green to amber and the screen was blank. My initial thought was the PSU. I rebooted and got it working however Internet explorer wouldn't open but firefox would. I ran avg but could not open the home page to see the results of the scan. I closed firefox and tried to reboot but got an error message saying firefox was still running. This morning I saw the latest Windows 7 updates on an old computer I have (A VM running in XCP-NG) to run an old version of Confluence Wiki but that's not really important.
After installing the updates and rebooting the VM is so slow that it looks frozen at times. I restarted it in safe mode to remove the updates but when I access the Windows Updates list from Programs and Features it shows "No updates installed."
Has anyone else seen something like this? I have backups of this VM so I'm working to restore from a backup and before you ask, I know - I have to update that Win7 machine to a more recent version of Windows.
Thanks in advance and best regards.

Since the update reboot Outlook is running in safe mode and though the reading panel is correctly set up it is closed every time Outlook is restarted. Add ones are all missing. I have no idea how to sort it short of removing all the updates. I have run a repair install and SFC /SCANNOW with no problems or change.

Hey guys, I have been reading around and posted a bit on reddit and still no solution, although it seems like it should be simple.

2 weeks ago tuesday my work laptop had regularly scheduled windows updates that everyone loves to see right before they shut down. the next day it began with the circle of death after 1-3 min after start up, sometimes upwards of 30 minutes of functionality. but eventually the circle of death comes and i can't click on anything, however the mouse will still function.

i have gone back to every restore point possible and still get the freezing. i have updated/ran MSE in safe mode as well.

It's not a huge deal if I have to reformat, I just really feel like the solution shouldn't be that hard.

Anyways, thanks for your time.

Howdy.

A couple days ago I got the ultradefraggerfraud (as Symantec calls it) on my old old Dell Inspiron Latitude D620 running XP Professional. I successfully got rid of it (as far as I can tell all was working properly) by using AntiMalwareBytes in safe mode followed by Ccleaner. Everything was running normally afterward.

When I went to bed and shut down the computer, it automatically installed updates from Microsoft. The next morning, when I turned on the computer which had been working fine before, I got the black screen and blinking cursor. I cannot get into safe mode at all. Nothing happens when I hit f8 or f1 after turning on. All I get is the black screen and a loud beep whenever I hit any keys.

I can get into Setup, but I don't know what to do there (if anything).

Rather than just give up and reinstall Windows XP, I thought I'd try to see if anyone here can help. Since the laptop was working fine before Windows Updates, it makes me think that perhaps there's a simple way (or at least some way) to fix this. I really don't want to have to reinstall from scratch if I can help it. I'm convinced the Windows updates had something to do with this.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks.

A:How Important Are Ms Office Updates? Are They Included In Windows Critical Updates?

I don't have that detection tool either. At least some of the office updates are available through the windows update feature. You can also navigate to the Office updates site from the windows update site. There are no problems with installing the office updates separately. In fact, I generally download only 1 or 2 updates at a time as I am on dial-up.

1. No. You either do Windows update and Office update, or you do Microsoft update, which does both at once.

2. I think so, but I am not positive. If you need it, it will install it, or, if you decline, you may not get updates. One way to find out, try it.

Hi

Noticed this month that I suddenly had a lot of important updates to install when I check Windows update. Under important updates I have the likes of:

KB3055999 - Update APN database entry for SaskTel (Canada) in Windows 8.1 and 8
KB3045634 - You cannot make a PPP connection after you reconnect a PLC device in Windows 8.1 or Windows 8

The article for both of these states: Provided as an Optional update for Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1

Wondering why I have these and others listed as Important?

Thanks

They are "only" important, so they are optional. "Critical" updates are not optional. MS-speak at its finest.

I'm new here and in hopes of getting this resolved. I just installed the new Norton Systemworks 2005 and rebooted after installation. When the boot screen got up to the blue screen with the Windows XP logo before displaying the login names where you put in your password, it just stops. I restarted a few times and waiting a few more times thinking it may need to 'finish' installing. But each time gave the same results. Finally, I went in with 'Safe Mode' and got in with no problems. Tried again in normal mode after looking around for any obvious problems (none found)... back to square one. Tried again in 'Safe Mode with Networking' and it failed like normal mode so I suspected a networking problem??? The last thing I tried which made me mad is that I tried to uninstall Norton Systemworks in 'Safe Mode' and that failed!! Anyone in these forums know the cure? :dead:

A:Unable to get to login screen, works in Safe Mode but in Safe Mode w/ Networking

Just a thought

Safe-Mode
Start \ Run \ msconfig \ diagnostic startup
disable any services attached to your most recent install and restart
should get warning next boot about using msconfig, its ok
One key service that needs to be available is the installer service
Try the uninstall, if doesn't complete
Try the uninstall string in the registry only if you know what you are doing

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Under it you will see a list of installed programs. Some don?t show up as words but you can figure out what they are by looking at their values. What you are looking for is the uninstall string. Double click that key as if you were going to modify its value. Do a CTRL + C to copy and then exit the registry editor.

Go to START \ RUN and paste the uninstall sting and hit enter. This should launch the uninstall.

Just a thought though as I am not infront of a test system at the moment. You should research this a little further so you have a clear understanding of what you can and can't do with msconfig.

or simpler yet

Safe-Mode

Start \ Programs \ Access. \ System Tools \ System Restore

Select restore point prior to install of whats giving you the problem.

Again, Good Luck

PS If you try to install it again, turn of antivirus and other open programs etc..

Start in Safe Mode and look in C:\Windows\Minidump for crash log files with a dmp extension, like Mini071008-01.dmp. Zip 4-5 of the latest ones and post here as a ZIP or RAR attachment. The log file contains information useful to determine what caused the error, most likely hardware.

This morning we had a power outage and when I turned my computer back on, it would not boot. I tried several times to hard boot, with no luck. Then I tried safe mode. Ran an antivirus scan and it showed malware and several infections which it cleaned. The computer still would not boot normally. I then ran chkdsk, still would not boot normally. I have ran malware bytes, registry repair and the registry defrag program as well as done a disk clean up. It still will not boot in normal mode.
Since my last problems that you helped me with, I have upgraded to a broadband internet connection and have a home network. The 2 other computers on the network are fine.
A week ago, I had purchased Avast internet security and had problems immediately. It would not allow me to connect to the internet. That was uninstalled and I went back to the free Avast antivirus, Zone alarm and Spyware blaster. I was very unhappy with Avast customer service and support iYogi and decided I did not want Avast on my computer at all. I have since downloaded PC tools free antivirus. Once I have my computer operational again, I am open to suggestions.
Fortunately, I did not change anything on the other 2 computers. Just mine.

hello and welcome to BleepingComputer,,

this is reminiscent of BIOS settings that need to be reset to default. you can do this by using that option in BIOS. do you see the option there?

if this pattern exists after BIOS reset, then there are other XP level options to try like console command /sfc scannow and chkdsk /r

not to long ago, i was dealing with a PC that was doing this same thing, and it was the hard drive (SATA) protocol setting in BIOS, it had to be set to IDE.

one more thing, this could be blue screen error that isn't halting, just looping boot. is there an option at the boot screen (the one with the safe mode options) about halting on errors?

Hello,

Recently my dad's computer had a corrupted hive and boot.ini. Via this website, I was instructed to run a chkdsk /r while in the recovery console. Everytime I used his OS disk to get into the recovery console, it prompted me for a password and I didn't know it (nor could I leave it blank). I decided to use my OS disk from my computer and I could fix the problem. Now, though, everytime I startup the computer, it prompts me to start windows normally, in safe mode, in safe mode with networking... To give further information...on that same screen there is an option for Windows XP and Windows XP Home Edition. Don't know if that has something to do with it. They both work though when I press enter on either one. Could anyone help me stop the computer from prompting me??? Thank you for any help.

You can spend a lot of time trying to fix the boot problem and clean the virus from the computer, or you can nuke it and reinstall Windows. I wouldn't bother trying to fix it, personally - I'd back up what I could and then I'd install Windows again.

Alright this is a family's laptop that is about 5 or even more years old...has windows xp on it dont know the exact one -.-...alright.

My sister has been using it and says she has never done anything to it...which i dont believe but anyways this computer will not boot up what so ever...everytime you power it on it goes to the screen that says unexpected error software/hardware problem yada yada yada...and then it gives you the options of boot in safe mode, safe mode networking, safe mode command prompt, last known good configuration...and none of those will work...we do have the recovery disks to wipe it but are trying to find a better way if possible...and when you try to load into any of the safe mode choices it stops at multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys...will stay at that for about 5-10 mins and then just turn off...if you try to just do normal mode or last known configuration it just acts like it loads with the windows and the little green loading bar then shuts off...the more i type the more i think the harddrive is toast but im new and learning so i probably could be wrong. Just looking for suggestions =)

Oh and this pc will run very hot...so if its a hardware issue i would not be surprised.

Hi and Welcome to BleepingComputer,

Not all anitvirus programs work in safe mode, I don't know about Symantec but I do know my ZoneAlarm does not. I do not see the reason to run it in safe mode. If you are really wanting to run stuff in safe mode, run SuperAntiSpyware in it and just run your antivirus program in regular windows.

Btw, it sounds like you had something on there that has backdoor capabilities and if that is the case, then unless you reformat the computer, it will never be truly safe again.

Windows just downloaded an update to my ASUS x83V laptop and now I can't get it to boot up. I've tried booting in normal mode, last successful mode, safe mode, safe mode with command prompt and nothing works.

If trying to boot in safe mode it gets stuck on crcdisk.sys. When trying to boot in any mode it eventually hits the blue screen with a STOP error of 0x0000001E. I have also gotten 0x0000007E and 0x00000024.

I am positive it's the latest Windows Update that caused this because my computer at work, which also runs on Vista and is also an ASUS, had an update yesterday. When I came into work this morning and tried to start up it was unable to and did a start up repair. That didn't work but it gave me a system restore option which did work.

Unfortunately my ASUS laptop does not prompt me to do a repair nor a system restore. The recovery disk I have that came with the laptop only allows me to do a restore which erases everything on my HD.

I'm only somewhat computer savvy; better at working with them than fixing them so please try to put things in layman's terms. Thank you!

Can't boot into Normal/Safe Mode with Networking, only safe mode...
Good Evening,I could do with some pointers on resolving an issue. I can only boot into windows in safe mode in Windows 10. Normal mode and safe mode with networking doesn't work. The problem occurred after a windows update. I have removed the latest updates that were installed and cleared any pending ones but it still won't boot properly. I have also run the troubleshooter and tried to recovery to an earlier date which also doesn't work. The laptop is a HP ENVY 17 notebook. At boot it just gets to the HP logo with the circular loading icon and no further and can only boot it into safe mode. Can anyone recommend the next steps? I have also tried the following;stopping startup items
uninstalling hardware drivers
removing recent software
running troubleshooters at boot
sfc scan
diagnostic/selective startups with minimal services running
Would the fact that I cant boot into Safe Mode with Networking imply its a network driver related issue?Bit of a dead end really, any help would be much appreciatedKind regardsTrevor

A:Can't boot into Normal/Safe Mode with Networking, only safe mode...

It's uncertain what the problem is - although a networking problem does sound likely.
Start with trying a clean boot:
Perform a Clean Boot:  http://www.thewindowsclub.com/what-is-clean-boot-state-in-windows
If that stops the problem, then re-enable things a few at a time until you figure out what's causing it.
Then uninstall the problem program (from Start...Settings...Apps...Apps & Features - if you don't find it there, check the right sidebar for Programs and Features and see if you can remove it from there).

Let us know what happens there and we'll move on from there if needed.
