X230T no USB 2.0 in Mini Dock 3 (Removed bracket so it fits)

Q: X230T no USB 2.0 in Mini Dock 3 (Removed bracket so it fits)

My brother has an X230T refurbished, and he'd love to dock the thing so he can use it as a desktop. We bought a Mini Dock 3 45N6678. Now, this usually doesn't fit the tablet version of the X220 and X230, but by simply removing a plastic, non electrical bracket you can make it work. Maybe not ideal, but the dock was cheap anyway. One funky thing is: the USB 2.0 ports on the back of the unit don't work at all with the X230T, but they work fine with my X220. When the X230T is connected, those ports don't even get power. I'm guessing we're missing the right drivers, but I can't find any that belong to the dock. We're both rocking Windows 10 Pro installs on the machines, though my X220 has one of the oldest BIOS versions (somewhere from 2011) while the X230T uses the latest available. Has anyone got any idea what's going on here? By the way, the other ports of the dock work fine, like ethernet, VGA and audio on the X230T.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Can someone assist me in finding out which option is best?

Should I use this Amazon.com: Monoprice 107637 1 Port Internal SATA to eSATA Bracket (107637): Computers & Accessories

or something like this: PCI Express SATA III Card - PCIe SATA 6Gbps | StarTech.com

Will the latter perform as fast as the former? (Or will the former even work given the lengths of the cables I have to use?)

Also, I'm getting really confused when it comes to the maximum length of the sata to esata. The esata bracket comes with a 20 inch cable... and the esata cable that comes with my external drive is about 20 inches. That makes an even 40 inches. I know the maximum sata length is 40 inches... and I don't want this 40 inch chain causing corruption.....

What should I do?

***I also want to make sure using the pci express port isn't going to cause any issues with the graphics card... and I really want to make sure I'm using the fastest method possible

A:PCI Express Esata Bracket or Direct Bracket?

Would sata be that much better?

I have a T430s with the NVIDA graphics card and the Mini Dock 3.  My monitor is old, and I was going to buy a new one.  However I won a 24 inch Vizio TV at a work raffle and since it's too small to use for a regular TV I thought it might make a good monitor.  I have the HDMI adapters that came with the dock. Would there be any technical issues that I should be aware of or that would present a problem(s)? Thanks for any/all help!!! GBA

I've currently got my W520 setup with the 433835U Mini Dock Plus Series 3, running the internal display, one 1080p monitor on the dock's DVI and one 1440p monitor on the dock's DisplayPort. I'm thinking about purchasing a second 1440p display.  Will be possible to run a second DisplayPort monitor on the dock instead of the 1080p monitor that's currently on DVI? EDIT: I have some extra cabling and adaptors, so I was able to test that the dock can drive both DisplayPorts simultaneously, it's just a question if it can handling 1440p on two screens.

Problem: W530 not charging with Mini Dock Plus Series 3 1. My W530's battery charges when not plugged into my Mini Dock Plus Series 3. 2. When the W530 is attached to the dock at first the Windows power icon shows that the W530 is connected to the power brick, and shows that it is charging. Charging lasts for about 15 seconds.  Then it stops charging (but continues to show that it is connected to the power brick) and runs from the battery, I can watch the % charge constantly lower. 3. I have updated the BIOS and Drivers from the Lenovo site, this made no difference. 4. I carefully cleaned the contacts on the W530 and dock, this made no difference. 5. None of the pins on the W530 or dock appear to be damaged, I closely examined them with a magnifying lens. Does anyone have any suggestions and/or ideas to resolve tis problem? Thanks, Bob

Hi I have a W520 with NVidia Quadro 2000M and 2 x Dell U2515H monitors. The Dell user guide says to enable DP 1.2 which I have done on both monitors. I have the W520 on a Mini Dock 4338 and monitor 1 is connected to that via a DisplayPort cable. On monitor 1 I then have a DP cable in the Out port going in to monitor 2 via the In port. My problem is that I can only get a duplicate display on both Dell monitors. When I use the NVidia control panel (version 8.1.870.0) & try to set up multiple monitors it only shows one monitor. I looked in Personalization and click on Detect it shows both Dells as monitor 1. I want to extend the displays. Any help appreciated.

Update. I can get them to extend by plugging each monitor in to a seperate DP on the dock HOWEVER the 2nd monitor only displays what looks like 1980 x 1080. So not ideal and help appreciated.

Hello all,  I just got a Thinkpad Mini Dock 3 with the USB 3.0 port. However, the dock port does not work with my W520 (which has USB 3.0 on it). The dock port does work with my X220 (yes, old school), however (which also has 3.0 port). So, the fault is not the dock, but some kind of issue between the W520 and the Mini Dock. I've uninstailled and reinstalled the 3.0 hub driver, updated drivers, and searched everywhere but cannot find a fix. Can anyone offer a suggestion on how to fix this issue? Thanks kindly,Dylan

So I currently have a Lenovo T430s Thinkpad and the Mini Dock Plus Series 3. The problem im having is that when the power cable is plugged into the dock and the laptop is mounted, my battery will not charge. Battery icon says "Plugged in, Charging" but i can see the battery percentage slowly draining. Usb ports, power button on the dock, secondary monitor and everything else seems to be working just fine. Laptop Charges just fine when "undocked". I initially thought it was a bad battery so i purchased a brand new genuine lenovo battery and still the same. Did an online search and cant find a solution to the problem. This all happened after I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 64. Anyone know a solution? im all out of ideas.

<strike>Seems like I'm the only one posting about my Click Mini!

I've had it under a week and I have just run into this problem. My keyboard dock is not being recognised. When I dock, it recognises the SD card, but it doesn't recognise the keyboard or the mouse input, or the battery (battery #2 not present). When I dock, it disables touch keyboard input (I'm guessing Windows does this when it detects a keyboard?) but I cannot type or use mouse input.

The tablet/keyboard were working fine up until this morning with all aspects working as intended. This is strange because

I had updated the BIOS and applied all driver updates, I have turned off, on again (with dock attached and unattached), and my most recent attempt was doing a clean install of Windows, but none of this resolves the issue.

Any thoughts?</strike>

Now I'm confused. All of a sudden it's working again! I will leave this thread open just in case there are any updates. Feel free to pitch in your ideas on why this happened. It could have been fixed when I was trying (and failing) to access BIOS and I was turning it off and on repeatedly...

Hello! Im having a little problem with my docking station. ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3. Seems like the DisplayPort does not work. I use dual 1440p monitors from Phillips and want to connect both with DP as the DVI is single-link only. I have one of the monitors plugged in the MiniDP on the side of T430 so i got that working wich is nice.  Is there some kind of firmware or something i need to install to get the DP working on the docking station? Cant remember i have ever done this and as far as i know it ha never worked... Always used it with a single 24" monitor with VGA. Thanks.

This issue is driving me crazy!  I bought new DisplayPort Monitors for T430s ThinkPads using the Mini Dock Series 3 dock.  I have 4 identical laptops.  Same software and drivers with two Monitors.  One on the Dock DisplayPort and the other Monitor on the PC Mini DisplayPort.   Three laptops work perfectly.  The forth one blinks! I do have a newer T430s with the Invidia Graphics card that has the same symptoms, but I have come to the conclusion that Lenovo does not support multiple monitors with that version.  Lenovo, Please tell me there is a firmware update for the Type 4337 Mini Dock Series 3 dock.  I saw the link for the T540 dock firmware update.  Will it work on the Series 3 dock?

Mock me if you like, , but...  Figured I would share, so others might benefit? There are a few flavours of AC Power issue out there (some bad 170W Power Supplies, some Lenovo Battery Manager issues, etc.), but if you are greeted with the warning on your W520, and are using a true 170W Power Supply, stop and check the Power Supply plug connection IN to the dock. I know sounds ridiculous, but...  First, given the slotted construction of the 170W Power Supply connector, NEVER force anything!  But, once you've lined that up, are sure and slid it in to the dock, at that point, make SURE that it's really fully seated in to the connector!  PUSH it to ensure! I've been having the issue, and finally realized, on my setup, there is an extra "hump" you have to push the connector past. (How long have I had this machine?  FACEPALM!)  If you plug it in, it will work, but give errors and be problematic on charging.  Once you FULLY plug it in, that problem goes away. I think it's a function of the middle pin not being fully and properly seated - so a test was failing (making it think it was a 90W supply?). And a PS for folks: The original dock for the W520 was the "4338-30U (eSATA)", 170W. I can report that the "4338-35U (USB 3.0)", 170W DOES in fact work with the W520. Sadly (as I expected), no, you don't get another USB 3.0 port on the back of the dock.  It de-rates to a USB 2.0 port, but that port does work -... hi, I really know nothing about these things but here is my situation:

samsung story 1.5tb USB2.0 external drive, switched it on the other day and it started smoking. not sure what was making the smoke.

removed the drive from the enclosure and got a SATA>USB dock thing for it. it didn't appear in the Computer with my internal drives but was visible in diskmgmt as "Healthy (Active, Recovery Partition)" but with the File System column empty and no letter assigned. right click only offers a menu with "Help" on it. not much help.

used diskpart to assign a letter and it now appears in Computer but says all its capacity (except ~250mb) is free and, when I open it, there are no files to see, only a folder "Recovery", which is empty. in diskmgmt it still has no letter assigned.

used a program called Recuva and it shows me some small files but nothing I recognise.

hoping that maybe the boot bit just needs rebuilt or something and the data is still there? I have no idea about these things, though. could it be something to do with it not wanting to operate outside of the original enclosure, like samsung have some kind of encryptive/I-don't-know thing to prevent people doing this to circumnavigate any data protection nonsense (which, in any case, I hadn't activated)?

any ideas?

thanks!!

I had purchased this device from amazon. Below is a brief history and the issues with the dock battery.

Initially turned the tablet on (while connected to dock) - Took over 30 minutes to charge it. I assume this was because of the battery being discharged. (Thankfully it did eventually start charging)In Windows 8.1. the dock battery was showing as 100% and the tablet battery was rising as it was being charged. The 100% seems to have been an issue with the installed bios on the machine (Which was showing 100%, when it was empty in reality)Updated the bios to V5. Now the dock battery was showing as 0%.Upgraded to windows 10

No amount of charging would charge the keyboard battery. Once the tablet was at 100%, it would give the status of "not charging" for battery 2.

I tried the following

Kept the device connected overnight on 2 occasions (But bear in mind this was for around 10 hours only) - perhaps 24 hours may do the trick? but could not do this as I did not want to risk keeping a device charged while I was at work. Will try this in the weekend.Turned off the device fully and then charged overnight (This would show the two status indicators for the batteries and did show a charge icon next to the second battery, but no change in battery status)Attempted to remove the dock battery. kept it removed (took out connection to circuitboard) for 30 minutes, then reconnected it to the tablet and power, but no change.Attempted to power the device via low powered u... I pried open the tablet taking care not to break the ribbons that are connected to either side.
Swapped the batteries over.
Put the tablet on charge (with the fully depleted battery)
it started charging (power adaptor also got warm)
Left it for an hour or so (was then at 55% battery life)
swapped back the batteries

The issue still here is that when the tablet is fully charged 100% and in the keyboard dock. I assume the keyboard dock will then get charged. Unfortunately it is mentioning.. Not charging....

Hi,I am using both a T530 and a W530 and also have a Thinkpad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 (the one with eSATA port). I would like to use both ThinkPads with the same docking station (of course not both at the same time ) and therefore have a 170W power supply (from the W530) connected to it. The problem is that the T530 does not recognize the 170W power supply and is running on battery only without having the docking station ports enabled. Its working fine though if I change to the original 135W power supply of the T530, but this one does not work with the W530. From my point of view a higher wattage should not be a problem, does anyone know why the 170W power supply does not work with the T530?

Then dock it and resumed:     it would     a) switch to 1920 x 1080, and     b) also detect and display on the second monitor - no intervention required. Now, it remains in it's prior "state" (it neither changes state nor outputs to the second monitor) - only outputting to the first external monitor - but at 1600 x 900. Thus since a recent change, it is not "re-detecting" the "change in state" on resume, ONLY when i now do a full restart. The update may have been a Windows update, but on the same day i also installed a Toshiba Dynadock - with dual display port support. I have used the Lenovo system update to update the driver - now it is at 10.18.10.4425 - and as the driver loaded the monitors re-detected, and corrected - but later the problem is persisting. Does anyone know how to force the driver to re-detect on resume not just on restart? You can use MSconfig to diagnose startup issues. Visit the following link for details;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iku_aPUsVQ4

You can post back with any questions regarding your system services and startup entries to establish their purpose and whether or not they are required at startup.

Taskbar icons are just shortcuts and do not effect the time it takes for starting a computer.

In both cases Windows or the Intel installer stopped me saying the mfr provided the drivers and that the installed version was up to date. I worked around by first rolling back the Intel driver. The manual (.zip) install of the latest intel driver worked. This immediately fixed the Dell u2415 on DP port 1 and laptop's built-in DP port.

When I dock the computer and press the power button on the dock it doesn't recognize my monitor as the main screen. I have to hit a key (Windows 10) and put in my password hoping that it's doing that and then the screen comes up. If I reboot after that ... THEN.... it recognizes my screen as the main monitor. How do I fix this? The only time this happens is when I use it off the dock and then put it back on. If it stays on the dock all the time it does just fine. Any fixes for this? Thanks...

Dear all, I would like to aquire the 4337 Dockstation with a 45N0113 170w power supply to use for my T520 I7 quad core to connect 3 monitors for my flight simulater, can someone please confirm i have done the correct research / findings? My T520 has eSata and not USB3 so it seems not a good option to go for the 4338 unless I am missing something which is more important for my flightsim and 3 monitors :-) Thanks for your time, much appreciated

Hi, Everyone. Got me a nice little x270 to replace my old x201.  Happy enough with the machine, but getting it connected to my accessories (monitor, keyb, mouse, ethernet) is a bit of a chore. This machine appears to have a "proper" dock port on the bottom.  Is there a compatible ultradock available for the model 20HN x270?  By proper - I mean, Not USB.  A nice dock I can simply drop the machine into when I'm at the home office.. Thanks!

Hi, I'm using a Thinkpad Pro dock with an L470 on Windows 10(both brand new). I have a VGA monitor and a DVI monitor connected, and I can output to both screens as well as the laptop display just fine, however as soon as I undock, or switch off the laptop, when I come to use it again, neither of the screens are showing as connected. I have to unplug them from the dock and plug them back in again, at which point they are recognised and work fine... until next time I have to undock/switch off. I have tried this with a different laptop (also L470, but running windows 8.1) with even worse results. On 8.1 the screen will repeatedly flicker for about 10 seconds, and any combination of the screens will work (sometimes just the laptop screen, sometimes just 1 monitor, sometimes all 3). Even when all 3 work, it rarely has the correct resolution, and takes several attempts to get it working properly. The whole point of having a dock is that there is no need to keep plugging things in every time you sit down, if I have to re-plug the monitors every time it is pretty pointless having a dock in the first place. I have updated the BIOS on the laptop, updated every driver, updated the firmware for the dock and Windows 10 is bang up to date. I'm about out of ideas now and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on a fix for this? I see web searches that this is quite a common issue, but most of the "fixes" are what I have already done, or are specific to Windows 7 or 8... Read more

i am looking at installing a dock

my query is..
is one better than the other? or is one more resource hungry than the other? for instance?

would be interested to hear opinions knowledge on the subject so as i can make a more informed choice?

thanks

A:rocket dock or object dock? pros cons?

Hi Billy,

I don't know why, but I've always used ObjectDock and I've been perfectly happy with it. I don't use any dock software now though as I found I wasn't using it enough to make it worthwhile having - it was just annoying me when I wanted to click things towards the bottom of my screen.

They're both free, so I'd suggest trying ObjectDock and if you don't like it, try RocketDock

They both have a wide range of skins/icons available, so in my eyes, they're evenly positioned.

I have a Dell XPS 15 and a Dell Dock WD15 which has been working fine for a long time but recently the WD15 dock has been acting up after it is re-docked to the laptop.
Everything works fine if I start the laptop with the dock plugged in but after re-docking the USB ports and Network (cabled) stops working. Everything seems fine with the drivers and as said it only happens after re-docking.
I've tried to rollback drivers and even downgrade the FW on the dock but the problem remains. The only way to "fix" it seems to be to restart the laptop after re-docking.
Running Win10 64-bit.
Any suggestions?

Hi, on hindsight I should have asked this question at this forum first. But I was tired from doing all the researching and bit on an old x230 convertible laptop off ebay that supposedly has core i7 3520M, 4gb of ram, and 160gb ssd. It has been upgraded to windows 10. It has not arrived yet. At around $200, it seemed to me like a steal for the specs. I do think that these specs were user-upgraded and not factory-made so I cannot speak for the quality.I read rave reviews about this device, however, most were from several years ago. I never owed a device with this specs or a touchscreen laptop for that matter so I do not really know what to expect.I guess I will start out to see if anyone still second this as a solid convertible laptop in today's standard. Does windows 10 run well on it? Seem like a lot of people run into problems when upgrading to windows 10? Is there anything special about the touchscreen or is it just obsolete technology nowadays? I mean the most resource intensive thing I will do on this laptop is just playing some online flash games so I think it is way less than what it is capable of. I was just looking for a laptop that is upgradable and can stay relevant for a long time so did I make the right call? Any feedbacks are appreciated!

I have a HP Pavilion 13 X2 Model F0A05AVI have two batteries in the unit, one in the tablet section and one in the keyboard/dock section. Recently, I have noticed the batteries do not drain equally (not sure if they should) but when the total battery level hits 50%, the keyboard stops working along with anything else attached to the dock like the touch pad for example. The tablet portion works fine. When I check the battery level it shows the dock/keyboard (battery #1) at 0% or 1% and the tablet battery (Battery #2) at 95-100% or so.  Is there anyway to get the batteries to discharge together and or get the dock/keyboard to take power from the battery in the tablet?
