Preferred Solution: Dell laptops doesn't power on

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

In laptops: the machine doesn?t respect the set power options,

As the ?turn off the display? is set to be ?never?, then if the laptop is restarted then this option is changed in its own and the value of never is switched to other value like ?15? (attached).

What might be the issue here?

Who to fix the value of ?turn off the display? is to be ?never? and to be kept never even in case of restart or electricity power cut?

Thank you

The system's fan was very loud so I put in a new power supply and then everything booted up fine. Unfortunately, that didn't solve the problem. It was the Motherboard fan making all the noise.

So, I put the old power supply back in and now the system doesn't power up at all. I checked all connections & I replaced the power cord and tried a different electrical outlet.

I even put the new P/S back in and nothing changed. It still doesn't power up. It's dead!

Any suggestions?

Do you mean the CPU fan ?
If so then I wonder if the CPU has been cooked

I would start by dispersing all internal voltage.
Detach the power cord
Press the power button in for 20 seconds
Re=attach the power cord
Try again

If it didn't fix then remove all addons, usb devices really anything attached (except screen and keyboard and power cord)
And try again

If it didn't fix then, confirm all internal connections are secure (even detach the dvd drive{s}

If it didn't fix then try disconnecting all fans (what !) for about 10 secs (turning on) I once had a fan of all things, that stopped my computer from turning on (unbelievable, I know)

Lastly, check the CPU for heat damage !

Hello.
In June 2016 our company bought Inspiron 5759. I used it at office, we have air conditioning, nothing that could cause overheating or other problems. In the end of July 17 laptop just turned off and didnt react on any actions. I brought to service center and they told it's the hub located on the same board with CPU. The only way to fix it is to replace the whole board which costs around 600 USD because there's CPU Core i7 in it. I was given another laptop Inspiron 5558 which was not used since winter of 2017 because it had problems with WiFi. I tried to connect it with LAN cable and discovered that LAN is not working, in fact there's no LAN adapter in device manager. Service center said today that's the same problem - but this time hub is not completely broken, it's just doesnt see LAN adapter and periodically shuts down WiFi. The technician told that this is a frequent problem with Inspirons and Dell knows about it but doesnt recall laptops or extend warranty on this spare part. I asked when second laptop got the wifi issues - it started at the beginning of 2017 and warranty ended in December 2016. Again just 1-2 months.

So, it looks very strange that Dell laptops break right after ending of warranty with same problem, and we can't just change the hub, we need to buy a new board which includes CPU for 600 USD.

This is most likely because your connection is only using a modem instead of a router. Modem's only support a single machine and are tied into the mac address of that machine. If you need more connections you need a router connected to the modem.

This problem is around 2 weeks old and has my boss and I chasing our tales and we need help. We work at a school and we have around 180 HP laptops of different makes and models set up on carts or in labs throughout the school. In the past two weeks almost
every single one has stopped taking power from the chargers they get plugged into when not in use, they simply a display "x% available (plugged in, not charging)". They stay powered on with the battery or without the battery in it but the battery
dies slowly. My solution I thought was to completely drain the battery then pull it, clear the power from the system, then they would charge again but upon reaching full charge they would stop charging again, no charging LED's or any LED's at all for that
matter, just re-displaying the not charging but plugged in.They are running Windows 7 as well.
All of these laptops have started doing this within 12-24 hours of each other so that rules out:

power cord failuresbattery failurescart or surge protector failure
We have also not had any power issues in the school lately and these carts have been working fine for months.

Any help is appreciated, Thanks!

A few days ago the three windows running laptops in my apt randomly lost internet connection. The network would display as full strength connection but no pages would load in IE or FF. However, the one macbook was still working (although sluggish) After trying to futz with the IP settings on each of the laptops, I gave up and reset the router hoping everything would go back to normal.

Well, now nothing works. All four machines still show full strength connection but nothing will load and no IM clients will connect. So, I tried to hardwire the connection to one of the computers straight from the modem and again, same issue. It shows a full connection, packets being sent and received, but no actually connection whatsoever.

Of course my ISP sees the modem connected and claims it can't be their problem so I'm left to fix this on my own.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm at my wit's end on this one.

When turned on it says that the primary disc not found. Then it goes straight to a warning screen telling you to go to setup. Looking at bios set up, the HD and optical drives are "not installed". Through Dell's chat line they said that both the HD and cd unit were defective. I could see the HD , but the CD too? They said that a operating system has to be noticed in order for the computer to work. Without a HD wouldn't the machine go to a doss prompt anyway? I tried that by removing the HD

Dell wants $168 for a HD which is nuts because online I can get one much less. My question is about the CD unit. Has anyone ever seen those go too

thanks
Rich

A:who knows their Dell Laptops?

The laptop could never go to a "DOS prompt" without the HDD, as to do so would mean that it would have DOS (not the case with XP) and if it had DOS, it resides on the HDD anyway.

Optical drives are not always shown (detected) in BIOS, but the BIOS boot screen should indicate their detection at boot time.

A faulty HDD electronics would prevent it being seen, but a fault on the Dell motherboard IDE would prevent both from being seen.

If they all had the same Windows version pre-installed and you can still read all the COA Windows Product Keys then all you need is a legitimate copy of that version of XP installation CD. Good luck finding one.

If they are all the exact same model then a set of Recovery CDs should work (if such was even provided and still available from Dell or somewhere).

A:Power difference between 3 laptops... is it worth it?

Just as a rough guide, here are the Passmark CPU score rankings from http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php
First number is the Passmark CPU score, second is overall ranking among all CPUs

AMD Athlon II P340 Dual-Core 1420 360
Intel Core i3 330M @ 2.13GHz 1964 233
Intel Core i5 520M @ 2.40GHz 2340 198

So if you use this as a guide, the I5 looks about 1.5x faster than the AMD. I think this is a difference you would notice, and my experience with laptops is that they tend to be slower than desktops all else being equal, so the more power the better.
Is it worth it? Only you can answer that - how much time will you be spending on this laptop, and what will you be doing?
If you're doing a CPU intensive task such as video editing you can never have enough power.
If you're just wondering if you will notice a difference again I'd say yes, and since the price difference between the second two is not that great I'd go for the I5. I don't know those brands so can't comment on that, I'm just looking at the specs you provided.

I need to know if a laptop has a power supply like a desktop. My neighbor says his laptop won't start and he's bringing it over for me to look at. Don't have specifics on what he means by it 'won't start' just yet, but though I'd check into this before I see it.

A:do laptops have a power supply like a desktop

A laptop's "power supply" is its built-in battery and the power adapter/charger that provides power to and charges the battery.

If your neighbor's laptop won't start, it can be from a number of reasons.
If the battery or power adapter/charger aren't the problem, my next guess would be a bad hard drive or a trashed Windows operating system.

A:Is there a Win7 VER. especially for Dell Laptops or PCs

There is, but you need to buy it from Dell.

When Dell manufacture a new computer they ship it with Dell Datasafe Backup software and as with most manufacturer's expect you to burn a set of recovery discs.

However, if you pay extra they will ship a windows DVD and driver DVD with a new computer.

My advice would be to contact Dell to see if they will sell you what you're after.

Anyone have experience with "refurbished" products from Dell? Particularly laptops? I have a friend that would like to get a laptop but has a pretty limited budget.

It seems like they have some good deals but I wonder about reliability.

A:Dell Refurbished Laptops

I find the refurb Dell to be a far superior buy than new. When you buy new you are often the first person to ever turn on the system, a refurb has been turned on and failed so it is sent back for extensive testing not done to a new system, after testing to make sure it works properly it is now sold at a good discount.

The refurb looks like new and has exactly the same warranty it just cost less. The only area where it is not a better deal is if you need some specific feature, you cannot order them built with extra parts beyond a few.

Dell gets so many refurbs that the best method for buying one is to know what you want ahead of time and what you are willing to pay for it, they have new systems come up for sale several times a day so if you have the time and know what you need it can be a very satisfactory system purchase.

In the last 2 weeks I have installed over 10 Dell laptops with Vista Home basic/Home premium. I have encountered these 2 specific problems on most of them!.

1 - They all had a 60 day trial of Office 2007. Having entered the License Key and registered the product everytime I open an Office application from the Start Menu it trys to reinstall again. If I use the Dell Dock it does not happen.

2 - On most occasions when trying to open the control panel it does not respond forcing Windows Explorer to restart.

I have not had these problems on other makes.

Has anybody else come accross these problems?

Does registering the product = Office validation with Microsoft Genuine Advantage?

Do the events preceding the Windows Explorer restart process include the fading white background, small blue circle spinning and "Not Responding..."? If so look at 3rd party firewall/ a-v products. Usually the firewall is the cause.

Since I first bought Win 7 a few years ago along with my new PC, Windows Action Center prompts me with installing a power management driver. Isn't such a driver for laptops only? Why have it on a PC? If it is needed then the link it provides is for, "AMDCoolnQuiet_Utility_V21801_XPVistaWin7.zip" according to my understanding of this it's mainly if I want to install the CoolnQuiet utility which I do not seem to need, nor is recommended for my MB and more importantly it doesn't really seem to be power management anyways. Any suggestions? thanks.
---> Added changes the above: I researched it anew and it showed me that "Cool n Quiet" is for PCs. And once again I installed it to remind me why it didn't work last time. It installed correctly with no difficulties but once I opened it I got a window which said, "This CPU doesn't support Cool & Quiet function." Which now begs the questionS why is windows sending me to this link? Why does it install it then if my CPU can't support it? or stranger still, seeing that my CPU is "Intel Core i5 760" and it is supposed to be able to support it--even though the technology is by AMD (and not Intel). What do I do now? Overall I am confused here. If anyone can shed some light I would appreciate it.

A:Is a power managment driver needed for PC? and not laptops

AMD coolnquiet is a power-saving utility/technology if you have an AMD CPU, I have it for example as I have an AMD CPU.
More than saving power it's useful to keep fan noise in check by keeping the CPU and other stuff cool by other means. 99.99% of the power used by the computer ends up as waste heat. Less power used means less heat, which in turn means fans can go slower and be quieter when the CPU/GPU isn't going at 100%.

Seems like Action Center is misfiring, you don't need that utility, but your board has an EPU, a physical component on your board (I have one as well) put there to optimize power usage, and it does need a driver to work.
So, go here
click on utilities and download and install the one called "ASUS EPU-4 Engine" which is the one for your board.

In the Overview of your board this feature is described as

System Level Energy Saving
The new ASUS EPU - the world?s first power saving engine, has been upgraded to a new six engine version, which provides total system power savings by detecting current PC loadings and intelligently moderating power in real-time. With auto phase switching for components (which includes the CPU, VGA card, memory, chipset, drives and system fan), the EPU automatically provides the most appropriate power usage via intelligent acceleration and overclocking - helping save power and money.

This is my first post on the tech spot....SO HELLO EVERYONE!!!! Like i said, this is my first post and really wasn't excatly sure where to put it. I figured this is a good a spot as any!!! OK at the risk of being called "YOU FOOL"! I'll come right out with it. I was sneakin this chick into my room and it was dark. I had my laptop plugged in across the room, the chick snags my laptop cord with her foot and yanks my laptop. Get up to use my laptop the next day and something's shorted out. I say shorted out because I've done some searching online with the problem i was having (power pack light goes out when plugged into laptop). So i go through the steps on possibly locating the short which was, pull off piece by piece from the laptop, which goes something like this....first cdrw, memory,HD and so on till I'm down to the laptop frame, which still the power up light turns off as soon as its plugged in. So before I go out and buy another mother board W/O CPU and RAM, i want to make sure of a couple things....Is this a common problem with maybe power jack needs to be resoldered or some other easy fix, and if I do buy a motherboard will my CPU work in the same D600 motherboard. What I'm getting at is swapping CPU a routine type thing? Also should I move this post to a heading that has more traffic?

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 and I believe the HD has went bad....or at least I think it has. I totally washed the HD clean with a program call Boot and Nuke. The reason for doing so was that the computer was having problem in all sorts of areas. Me being a worry wart, thought it was infected with a virus.

So anyway after wiping it clean I tried to install Vista. Before it will install it asks "Where do you want to install Windows?", and it gave me two options...Disk 0 Partition 2 or Disk or Partition 3 MediaDirect. When I highlight Disk 0 Partition 2 for the install location a message appears at the bottom of the screen saying..."The disk may fail soon. If other hard disks are available, install Windows to another location". Well I have no other locations so I tried it on this disk and it would only get to 2% on the Expanding files step. But instead of getting HD error message I get the following message...."Windows cannot install required files. The files does not exist. Make sure all files required for installtion are available, and restart the installation. Error code 0x80070003". I tried this 4 times, all with the same result.

So now I'm really confused as to what the problem is. Is the HD bad? Is the the Vista disk missing files? or is it both. If it is the HD, do I have to use a Dell HD or can I just go to Best Buy and purchase one there?

Any/all help would be greatly apperciated.

A:Memory compability for Dell laptops

Do a Google search for memory configurator and enter in your specific transplant patient's information and see if it is the same type and speed if they are then your good to go .

My Dell latitude D600 was plugged in and cord was snagged with foot thus yanking the laptop. My question is....is this a common problem for MB to short out? I pulled individual components to try and find out if anyone was at fault. Well I'm down to the MB frame and still my power light goes out on my power pack as soon as it's plugged into the board. Is this a common problem or an easy fix or should I goahead and buy a new/used MB W/O ram and CPU off e-bay for $150 ?

A:Common prob/w Dell laptops?

yeah man it is a common issue on the d600 series i work for dell as a gold tech rep so i know.. when that light on the ac adapter goes out when you plug it into the system board she is bad.. if you have a good service warranty like Gold they should have no problem replacing it. just tell them that the light on the power supply goes out when you plug it in and they won't even ask you any more questions than that..i would get another mobo

You have to purchase compatible RAM. Go to www.crucial.com, and allow it to scan your system to determine what options are available.

You can install Windows XP. I doubt it would run Vista well.

First off, not sure if this is the right forum, but I guess this falls under "hardware" so..

So here's my question..I love Dell computers. I've had a Dell Inspiron laptop for 4 years now and it works great. But it's only 1.1GHz so of course it's showing it's age so I'd like to get a new one. But here's the problem...Dell laptops only seem to go up to 2.3-2.5 GHz while brands like HP have laptops well over 3 GHz. What gives? Why are Dell's not up to speed with other brands yet, don't they want to compete with the market better? Cuz this is seriously holding me back from wanting to buy a Dell, or at least wait until they're as fast as HP etc.

Hi Everyone,

I have a broad question to ask regarding laptops running Windows 7 (and possibly by extension other versions of Windows) -

"Are laptops running Windows 7 known to crash (go to a recovery console) when they reboot close to the end of their battery power?"

I have a laptop that has been experiencing BIOS / SSD firmware issues, and I am now performing extensive testing on it in the form of automatically restarting it every 5 minutes. To achieve the 5 minute restarts I am employing a program called psshutdown, which I have written a batch script for, and set the batch script to run every five minutes after login through the Windows Task Scheduler.

So far the laptop has gone to a "recovery" screen on two occasions - on both of these occasions the recovery console has restored the computer back to the last System Restore Point. On both occasions the battery was very low. On one occasion the laptop was running from battery only, and on the other it was plugged into AC power (but the battery was severely depleted).

I am contemplating performing this test on a known "healthy" laptop to see if it behaves the same way, but thought it best to get some opinions before proceeding.

Any thoughts / contributions are appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Davo

A:Do laptops crash when they reboot close to the end of their battery power?

In my experience dealing with many Windows 7 machines whose owners aren't too keen on charging
batteries, I haven't seen a recovery console crash as you describe. However, I have seen laptops revert to the "resume.." menu after the laptop was restarted due to a drained battery. A recovery screen reboot would be indicative of a software/OS issue in most cases wouldn't it?

I'm in a school and need to set the laptops power management as follows for running on batteries:
Turn off monitor: 30 minutes
Turn off hard disk: 15 minutes
System Standby: never
System hybernates: 30 minutes
also:
Close lid: do nothing

I have figured out how to create a simple batch file that will execute on the laptop at startup. I put it in the group policy for the Organizational Unit Laptops and it works.
I haven't been able to find the syntax for power management settings.
Help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!

I have been interested in buying a 14 inch or 13 inch laptop, but I have some "must have"s before I am willing to buy it:
1) Matte screen (though this can be fixed with certain screen overlay products)
2) dedicated Page Up / Page Down keys (unlike, say, a Macbook, which requires the function key to be pressed along with the up/down keys)
3) Hard Drive Indicator light
4) Good sound from headphones (many computers have terrible sound with headphones, for some reason!)
5) Momentum/Inertia feature for the trackpad.
The Lattitude laptops I saw in microsoft store fulfill 1-3. But laptop makers today have this infuriating pattern to TAKE AWAY features. In this case, their touchpad driver had so many fewer features than older laptops. One must-have for me is the Inertia/Momentum feature, where if you make a flicking motion with your finger, the cursor continues to move, as if you flicked a trackball.
Does anyone know if recent Dell computers can be forced to use a different touchpad driver which has this feature?

I need a lightweight (under 2kg) laptop for work, just MS Office applications and internet. I'm looking at used Dells on eBay, but am stuck at the point of whether to go with the D400, D410, D420 or D430. Am I getting anything extra worthwhile as I go up the range in terms of performance, reliability (apart from the later models having less miles on the clock) or less weight?
