I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

How to delete some of 'unneeded files/folders' in my Document?

If you have Win 7 X64 then you will need the 64bit version of Unlocker.

Hey all -

Have an issue with my wife's Vista PC that has me stumped. She has a folder on the desktop, it has the "shared" icon on it. I can get into the folder and see it is empty (with Show All Hidden Files active). The problem comes when I try to delete it.

If I try to delete it (Right Click>Delete), the system hangs and hangs until I have to power down the computer.
If I try to unshare the folder the system hangs for sometime, then tells me I do not have administrator rights to remove sharing. (My username is a local admin on the PC)
I right click>properties there is 0 file size to the folder.

Tried to boot to safe mode to delete, still no good, same issue.

Any ideas? Thanks.

When I right clicked and clicked on delete, a normal windows box popped up and siad that it is no longer there even though I see it right there under program files. The same program is showing under programs from the start bar. When I try to right click and delete it there, there is no option to delete it. It opens to empty. Any help would be greatly aqppreciated. I have tried to unlock it but it didn't work. I do not remember how I did it and will try it again if someone thinks it may work and can tell me what to try.

During a TrendMicro virus scan, it found an archive that was infected. A quick check of the archive (Which I'd grabbed months before, but never ran) showed it was actually an application, so I went to shift+del the file (No sense dumping a virus into the recycle bin), and poof it's gone.

Then I went to delete the folder it was in, but... it wouldn't let me. Told me I didn't have the permissions to do so. A quick check of the folder's contents revealed the virus/app was back, as if it had never been deleted.

If I try doing a regular delete, it tells me Destination Folder Access Denied.

So I started poking around the file's security properties.
"Unable to display current owner."

I tried changing the owner, but it wouldn't let me do that.
I downloaded Unlocker, right-clicked on the file and unlocked it, but nothing seemed to happen, and same results when I try to delete it.

I'm running Vista 32-bit, not connected to a local network (Just one computer), and I'd really like to delete this virus/app off my machine. TrendMicro was unable to get rid of it, and I can't seem to get rid of it either.

A:Solved: Cannot delete file / No Permissions - Unable to display current owner of file

Ha, nevermind. Unlocker just took an enormous amount of time in actually starting up, and turns out the virus scanner had a process linked to the file. So, problem solved. Nothing to see here.

Kaspersky found a file infected with a trojan, but did not offer to clean, delete, or quarantine it. That was not very helpful, so I figured I had better delete it manually, so I navigated to it, clicked on it, pressed shift delete, and windows said it could not find it!!!
I tried to delete it through the command prompt, even shutting down the explorer.exe process, but still no go (same error).
Any ideas what to do?

this is my sister's computer, a dell dimension 8400 with XP home with sevice pack 1 only (we refuse to allow it to upload SP2).

a while ago we were having a strange problem with the aol software and could not delete or uninstall aol 9.0. while in safe mode, i was finally able to move the program file to a folder on the desktop of the administrator. and there it sits. laughing at me.

i can't delete anything in there. it says it is either running or i don't have the correct access level (something like that). in safe mode as the administrator, the folder appears to be empty when i look at it's properties, but i cannot even look inside it as the admin. i changed the permissions on the folder to include the main user (also a computer administrator) and gave permission to change and delete the file, but of course, i can't.

this particular computer logs onto the net via wireless connection if that makes any difference. probably doesn't.

hello, I was wondering just a few seconds why the subject Batch file to delete folder had been closed? the problem hasn't been solved?

So I was also wondering how to delete subfolders in batch command line or file?

A:[SOLVED] Batch file or command to delete folder

Oh! how stupid am I.

few minutes in google and the answer is :
for example you are dealing with the C:\temp folder and you want to erase all elements in it!
batch file :
@echo off

del "C:\temp\*" /Q /F /S
for /d %%X in ("C:\temp\*") do RMDIR /S /Q %%X

command line for delete subfolders (if you want to test) :
for /d %X in ("C:\temp\*") do RMDIR /S /Q %X

I think it's larger better than erase the "C:\temp" folder and recreate it! Because if you want to do this for all the temporary folders (windows has it tricks)... it will be long. fortunately, you wouldn't do that because I made it for you, enjoy (just replace %profile% by you'r profile name or the profile name variable (%USERNAME%)):
@echo off
del "C:\Documents and Settings\%profile%\Local Settings\Temp\*" /Q /F /S
for /d %%X in ("C:\Documents and Settings\%profile%\Local Settings\Temp\*") do RMDIR /S /Q %%X

del "C:\Documents and Settings\%profile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\*" /Q /F /S
for /d %%X in ("C:\Documents and Settings\%profile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\*") do RMDIR /S /Q %%X

del "C:\Documents and Settings\%profile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Temp\*" /Q /F /S
for /d %%X in ("C:\Documents and Settings\%profile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Temp\*") do RMDIR /S /Q %%X

I hope someone can help with this. I borrowed a dvd from a friend and tried to watch it on my dvd player. It showed as a data disc so I thought I'd be clever and open it on my pc instead and convert it somehow...

Big mistake! The disc has one vob file which I started to copy onto my desktop - it copied half of it then froze so I had to close it down and restart my pc. My pc then took an age to restart and I cannot delete the vob file from my desktop! It is showing as 4 GB but when I try to send it to the recycle bin it shows as 0 bytes and freezes during the recycling!

Starting up and shutting down is now incredibly slow. It takes around 15 minutes until I can click on anything on my desktop.

I have no idea what to do. I tried restoring my pc to an earlier point today (pre nasty vob file) but it was still there when I rebooted. Also, Avast seems to be randomly switching itself off and I am even unable to run Housecall to see if there's anything malicious going on - it tells me I don't have Java (although I did) so I successfully updated to the latest version and it STILL says I don't have it. I can't even scan using the plug-in as it mentioned something about not being able to obtain the info..? Another odd thing is that the little icons that sit next to urls are mismatched. I have the RAC icon for Google for example! All this has happened today.

My OS is Windows Vista.

If anyone can help I'd be eternally grateful!!

Hi. I hope someone is able to help me with this. I've spent 3 days trying to disinfect my PC but to no avail.

One week ago, Spybot reported a Trojan. I ran both Spybot and McAfee in Safe Mode and I thought I had got rid of it. However, each time I connected to the internet, Trojans kept being reported. I tried to clean the PC but they keep coming back.

PC Setup:
Windows version Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2.
Firewall, Anti-virus etc Kapersky Internet Security trial version.
Previously used McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006 8.0 which has been uninstalled.
Other related software installed:
HijackThis 2.0.2.
Spybot Search & Destroy

Kaspersky reports and cleans the Trojans but again they return when I log on to the internet, Kaspersky keeps reporting C:\Windows\Explorer.exe detected modification of of riskware 'Hidden data sending'. Also, most times that I log on, the dial up box automatically opens.

Basically, the problem is that I have identified the problem file but I don't know what is running it and I can't delete it.

I hope you are able to help.

Here's how I tried to fix the problem:

1. Cleaned all temp files using both cleanmgr and ATF Cleaner
2. Continually ran and cleaned with Ad-Aware and rebooted until nothing more found.
3. Rebooted and ran Spybot - no immediate threats found.

Hi Everyone,I'm not sure if this is the right forum to be posting this question in but here goes. Several weeks ago I had a devastating experience while using Microsoft Works Word Processor and lost a weeks worth of work. I posted this thread about it. --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/102537/trouble-with-microsoft-word-processor/ .OK, today I was going through one of my pictures folders and just happened to stumble across a "file" stuck in with the pictures. The name of that file was similar to the one that I was talking about in that first thread but it has a ".1" file extension instead of a ".jpg" extension.I tried to open it and got the Microsoft note saying that Windows couldn't open the file and asking if I wanted to search the INTERNET pro a program that could open it.I figured it was a long shot but decided that I would give it a go anyway and clicked on search the INTERNET and got to this page --> http://shell.windows.com/fileassoc/0409/xml/redir.asp?Ext=1 http://search.live.com/results.aspx?&F...ile+extension+1 .I clicked on this link --> http://www.liutilities.com/products/winbac...ibrary/files/1/ . OK so if you followed that link you wound up on this page --> http://www.liutilities.com/products/winbac...ibrary/files/1/ .Now comes my question... At the top of the page is a little information bubble that says; Description 1 is the file extension for the STEP Backup file associated with Iomega Backup. Windows Cannot Open 1 Files? If Windows cannot ope... Read more

A:Strange File In My Pictures Folder

If you download a utility like File Analyzer you can identify the format of a file, with what it was compiled, encrypted, packed, etc. Once you know what the format of the file is you will know what you need to open it with.

Help me please! Every time I delete a photo or move it to a folder, I get a "copy" in the original photo. I have tried highlighting & moving a group. I have tried moving them one at a time to a folder to delete. I have tried just deleting. I have more than 100 duplicates of some photos (just trying everything LOL). Any ideas? this is using the Picture Tasks on Windows xp.

Have you tried deleting them without using the picture tasks by just highlighting them and pressing the delete button?

Hi guys, We have an older server 2003 with all sorts of account permissions on it, that also controlled the profile of this PC I'm currently sitting it. I then reinstalled Windows 8 to this PC creating a new profile independent of the server, and as a workgroup network connection. However, Windows 8 also reinstalled user folders from the previous profile that I soimplly can't delete. So I've atken some scrrenshots and posted them here to see if someone might be able to help me get rid of them. It seems a previous account profile created and still controls the permission of these folders and I simply can't find or owrk out how to delete them. Many thanks all.

A:Unable to Delete a Folder.

Two options:
Download PendMoves and MoveFile . There are 2 programs: movefile and pendmove
Open the admin command prompt and run movefile /? so that you'll know the systax on how to use it.
NOTE: usage: movefile [source] [dest]
Specifying an empty destination ("") deletes the source at boot.
If the above does not work then download: Slacko Puppy Linux release . Put it in a USB and boot up. On the bottom left corner you'll see all the drives in your PC. Browse thru them and find what you want to delete.

i am trying to delete a folder but get the following error message -
cannot delete folder mainmenu: directory not empty ... even when i try to delete the sub folders inside this folder i am unable to do so ... pls help

Hi edifiz

Try again in Safe Mode, logged in as Administrator. And first, in Windows Explorer, make sure the View in "Tools/Folder Options/View" has the selected dot in front of "Show hidden files and folders", and remove the checkmarks from the boxes in front of "Hide extensions for know file types", and "Hide protected protected operating system files.

It's likely this will show some files you previously could not "see". Now you should be able to select and delete them. Once the subfolder is empty, you should then be able to delete it, and it's parent folder as well.

If you still can't delete the files and folders, you may need to gain "ownership" of these. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421/en-us

Best of luck

Hey guys. I had installed windows 8 RP on a separate partition. I wanted yo get rid of it so I removed its entry from boot menu but now I am unable to delete the folders left after it such as windows, windows.old and programfiles.

The error is that you need permission from trusted installer to delete file.

Hello HTB,

If you didn't want anything on the Windows 8 partition, then you should be able to just delete or format the Windows 8 parittion to delete everything on it.

I had to do a restore on my laptop and after I did it created a 'Backup' directory on my hard drive with the date of the restore. I don't need this folder but the system won't let me delete it. I do have Admin rights but not signed on as the Admin, I've never had the password for the Admin and Best Buy want's $25 to get it for me. I've tried changing the properities with the directory and also trying to do it in safe mode. Any suggestions because I could really use the room this directory is taking up. There are actually 3 different folders, under the main backup one, for 3 different dates (long story).

You have 2 options.

1. Grab Ubuntu LiveCD and boot Ubuntu and then click on your HDD and scroll to the folder and delete it.

2. http://www.malwarebytes.org/fileassassin.php
