Microsoft Sidewinder and Windows XP

Q: Microsoft Sidewinder and Windows XP

I have an older Microsoft Sidewinder joystick (Part No. 91551) that I am trying to use with a new Dell XPS system that does not have a game controller port. I purchased a Belkin adapter to convert the game controller to a USB input.
The joystick is not auto-detected in Windows XP.
Are there any drivers for Windows XP. When I attempt to use the Game Controller input in the Control Panel, there is a Microsoft Sidewinder identified. When I select it, I get an error message "Missing Gameport or Gameport Drivers".
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Ron

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Dear sirs,
I have a Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro Joystick, and I am attempting to install it through the adapter of my laptop Toshiba, and along with that I intended to plug the USB chord into the VMWare application where I have Windows Vista where I play old
games on it, I desire to use the Joystick for ease of playing some old CD-ROM games that I have installed on Windows Vista under VMWare for ease, however, I have had the trouble of trying to get the software to recognize the Joystick. It should have recognized
the device that I was installing, but it did not, niether does Windows 8 (the current software that I am using) recognize the joystick when I plug it in through USB. Can you give me the steps on how to successfully get both Windows Vista, and Windows 8 to
recognize the Microsoft Sidewinder Joystick in order to trouble shoot this problem, I would appreciate it very well.
The Part no. X03-57540 , and the Product ID: 85791-579-7678597-00000
Thanks for looking into this.

I just put my Sidewinder joystick on my computer again. The built in drivers work great but the system won't allow me to install the profiler included with the original drivers CD.
MS's site was as abyssmal and useless as usual. They had updated versions of the profiler but it said to use it on win98 and no indication was made as to its use with xp.

I own a Microsoft Sidewinder Pro, it is of the style that hooks up to my Soundblaster Soundcard (not USB) . When I upgraded to XP I found out that it is not supported by XP. (worked fine on (98) I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem, and if Microsoft is going to supply any drivers to help this problem. I hate to get rid of a 75 dollar Joystick, (microsoft at that) because Microsoft does not support it on XP

BIG to microsoft!

Has anyone found a workaround to use them in XP?

Welcome to TSG!

Really? I have an old Sidewinder 3D pro, that is found and works just fine in XP pro..

I think you may need to chose the driver, but there is a "sidewinder auto detect" feature I think..
It still shows installed for me, so I don't remember off hand how it installed..

I know it's in XP pro though.

Also says my Thrust Master wheel isn't supported by XP. But it too works just fine.

I have a Microsoft Sidewinder X4 Keyboard. The keyboard has a backlight on the keys as it is made for gaming from what I believe.

However everytime I boot my computer the backlight stays on and I have to turn it off by pressing the backlight key 3 times (three times as the keyboard has different dimming settings, bright, less bright, even less bright )

Does anyone know how I can have the backlight turned off forever unless I press the button to activate it?

I assume there must be a setting in the registry telling the keyboard to light up upon boot up?

So I've just started playing an MMO - Age of Conan, and I think I'm able to use my Microsoft SideWinder X6 Keyboard properly for the first time. I pretty much bought it because it looked good... hah.. now I need to know how to set macros?

The game is pretty intense in the sense you must press your combo attack, then follow directions and press corresponding keys in order. I was hoping I could set up macro for some during pvp.

Would anyone be able to tell me how to do that? I'm completely over my head here, cheers.

A:Macro help - Microsoft SideWinder X6

So I figured out through its own software, but I cannot seem to figure out how to make it so theres 1 second wait between certain keys, etc, for the macro.

Unless someone can tell me by recording the macro during the game, how do I then select what I've recorded so I can use it?

I'm trying to figure out how to get my older Sidewinder Game Pad and Sidewinder Precision Pro Joystick to work in Win. Vista. It downloads the software, Sidewinder Central, but I cannot get to the "profile" area where you set up game profiles and assign keys to buttons and such. It lets me "test" my game pad and joystick and they test fine, but I cannot get the window to open up the profile area that shows all the buttons. I went to MSN support but no luck.

Sorry, Sidewinder software is not compatible with Vista. You have to use the basic sidewinder driver provided with Vista. Profiles are no longer accessible, you can program buttons inside the game itself.

I recently built myself a gaming computer, I then decided to hook up my old Microsoft Sidewinder joystick to play some flight simulators; upon doing this my computer failed to recognize the device. What could be a cause of this?

A:Microsoft Sidewinder Joystick Problems

if your joystick is usb plug n play then it should have found it. if not usb and plugs into a sound card then you will have to load the driver cd. only other thing could be that the usb cable end is bad or the stick itself. you might try a restart but I doubt that would make a difference on usb. bottom line sticks are cheap. Logitech extreme 3d pro can be had for $25.00 dollars just about anywhere.

...don't call Microsoft support without your receipt.

Unless you still have your receipt, you'll either have to settle for getting a much inferior mouse replacement (Sidewinder X3) or nothing at all.

Despite whatever the warranty and refund departments tell you (and you will have to call both), it will eventually loop back to the warranty department, which will tell you, despite earlier assurances that you'll be able to get a market-value refund without a receipt, that you'll need provide your receipt to get any kind of refund.

Otherwise, enjoy your brick of a mouse and Sidewinder X3 replacement.

Hello, I bought a Sidewinder from PC World about a year ago because I thought it was pretty standard and easy to set up being USB. Back then I connected the game controller to my front USB port and Windows Me detected hardware and began to install it. I then started Rayman 2 and it worked fine (it was the pad that Ubisoft had suggested). It went in my drawer and I hardly played on Rayman 2 again. I bought Windows XP a year ago and now I decided to have a go! I inserted the USB cable into the port and...nothing.

I have played around in control panel but nothing seems to happen, it won't work with Rayman 2 and it doesn't make any sounds when I insert and remove it from the port. I have checked the official sidewinder website but I can't find anything!

Please can someone help me get my Gamepad working! Any replies are extremely appreciated!

I came across an excellent flight simulator (Flight Gear) that makes me want to take the old M/S joystick out of moth balls. Trouble is when I hooked it up, it apparently does not know Windows 7 x64bit from apple butter!
I have a USB adapter that shares a USB2 with a 15 pin game port; so obviously they both function as USB2 ports. The old joystick has a 15 pin plug on it and attaches to this connector, but nothing happens. The machine does not recognize it.
Can this 15 pin game port connection function connected through a USB2 to the Motherboard? Can settings be made to tell the machine that it is there or will the Microsoft sidewinder force feedback joystick just not function in that lash-up?
Trying to load the factory included programs/drivers fails because it will not allow Windows 7 to load them. If this type of connection will not function, is there some kind of a card I could get to make it function? And it that is available how does one go about getting a driver that will function with a W-7 x64bit system.

Force Feedback loses some effects with default driver supplied with vista ultimate 32bit after roughly 2+ effects are applied at once. (it happens in multiple racing games)  I have noticed that it shows steer Left/Right and accelerate as X/Y axis but brake is listed as Z axis.  Shouldn't force feedback be tagged as Z axis?  I have tested the controller with xp and the same games and the controller works fine with the default xp driver.  Sidewinder software wont install on vista so i can't load any different drivers to check if this is the issue.  Note: In the default xp driver it lists left/right/brake/accel. as x/y and z as feedback.  Any ideas?

Hello Tracker,

According to your post, you are now using Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback Wheel mouse. This device has no driver for Windows Vista provided by Microsoft. Therefore, some functions may miss, very possibly including the problems you encountered.

Hi everyone.

I have googled for this and found a couple of threads on the subject, but they skim over the actions needed to do what they suggest. Can anyone please fill in the gaps in English that a 10 year old can understand? :/

SideWinder Force Feedback Wheel (USB)

"...some threads I've seen have recommended software solutions to get Force Feedback working. Try PPJoy or GlovePIE and let me know if either one helps."
PPJoy - Parallel Port joystick driver for Windows 98/Me/2000/XP

Glovepie - cannot display the webpage

Say It's not so.. (Sidewinder)

"Hmmm.... I just plugged mine in and Win 7 (x64) installed the drivers and it appears to be in working order, though I've yet to try it with a game."

I plug mine in and it doesn't do anything. At first it brought up the autorun from the disc and that just gives an error message saying "The version of this file isn't compatibile with the version of windows you are using..." But above he said it installed... what was the difference?

"I was able to calibrate my USB force feedback wheel and it works fine..."

"this solution actually worked for me. running in compability mode for xp service pack 2."

I have tried to run compatability mode but I can't find in the "D" drive properties. Where else would I look?

I could carry on, but can anyone help with a solution that works please?

Mike.

A:Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback wheel drivers. Not win7 compatable

I suggest you to install the XP driver in compatibility mode and check if it helps.
Follow these steps:
1. Right-click on the installation file and select properties.
2. Now click on the compatibility tab.
3. Under compatibility mode, check “Run this program in compatibility mode for”.
4. From the drop down menu, select Windows XP(service pack 2).
5. Click Apply and then click OK.

Fine in theory, but which file is the installation file?

Im having some trouble with my steering wheel, or more particularly its control software, in Windows 7.

First i should point out that the wheel works in games, i can control a car with it and all that. The problem i am having is specifically with the Software that comes with the wheel that allows you to map commands to the buttons, adjust force feedback, sensitivities/deadzone and return to centre tension and load schemes for specific games.

In essence, my wheel is stuck on max settings for return to centre and force feedback which is all very entertaining for things like Monster Truck Madness but not so for more advanced simulations, where personally i have Force Feedback and Return to Centre very low (i.e. about 10%). The only way to change it is via the software (as far as i know) which i cant access. There are Force Feedback settings in games but these are on top of the setting in the software, so have very little effect, if any.

My exact problem is;

Having installed software (installation went fine!), right click logo and click 'Open Sidewinder Central'. From there i can open Game Controllers where you get the standard window displaying all the different controllers. I can get to here in Control Panel also but a different window opens to control the wheel with no FF etc options. I now highlight the wheel and click Properties, where i get this message;

Ok heres the problem, I own a Compaq 6029us computer with a compaq mobo, built in sound/video/usb etc. I have a MS sidewinder dual strike(about a year old) and am running on Windows Home XP(compaq version). My last computer was built by me and I had no problems plugging in the joystick to the USB and Windows XP PRO would autodetect it. In fact It still works with my other system.
When I plug in the joystick on this computer I get nothing. When I go to add to my Game Controllers it says "Your gameport or gameport drivers are not properly configured. Please see the Device Manager."
So in the device manager there is no gameport under sound, video, game controllers tab. I tried manually installing a gameport(standard, Ess, Neomagic etc.) and none of them work. I looked on MS for some drivers but MS claims that they are all built into windows. I tried looking for gameport drivers from Compaq(waste of time), I called compaq and asked them about this problem. They couldn't tell me how to install a gameport(though they said I should have one) and they told me it was a problem with the joystick and I would have to contact MS for help, which is not true because the joystick works fine on my other computer. I know its because there is no gameport/driver. But they couldn't get one to work and couldn't explain why . So that was a waste of time.

You may be out of luck with this one. My Microsoft Sidewinder Steering wheel worked with Windows 98 but not with Windows XP. Microsoft also provided a statement that they would not support the device in Windows XP. Yours may be in the same class. I'm trying to connect my MS Sidewinder Freestyle Pro to a USB port (it doesn't work on the joystick port).

In Device Manager it is listed under Human Interface Devices with a black exclamation mark on yellow triangle, and when I double-click it it says it couldn't load the device driver (code 2).

So when I click 'Update Driver' it finds one, and when I tell it to go ahead it prompts me to insert "Windows 98 Second Edition CD-Rom". (I don't have this, should I have got it supplied with my PC?)

Anyway, I tell it to skip file, and the 3 files it needs but can't find are:

hidusb.sys
msjstick.drv
vjoyd.vxd

(By the way, when I connected it to the normal joystick port it didn't even list it in device manager - it's as though it didn't realise it was plugged in, which is why I'm using the USB port.)

I have installed DirectX 7.0a but that didn't help, and my sound card is by C-Media (CM18738/C3DX PCI Audio Device) who I can't find on the net for updates. I use Win 98.

Sorry to have gone on for so long but I thought I should put as much info as possible.

Any help would be much appreciated.

This may be why it doesn't work on your soundcard. http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ARTICLES/Q193/3/43.asp
As for the USB, you do need those files and they will be located on the CDRom. If you don't have the cdrom then you chould have the cab files on your hard drive and should be able to point the driver update to those files when it needs them. Find out where your cab files are by going to start then find files and folders, Search for *.cab it should find quite a few files. The ones you want will be called win98_##.cab where the ## will be a specific number. There should be quite a few all in the same location with consecutive numbers. Run the driver update again and when it needs those files point it to the directory where the cab files are at. The cab files should be on your computer if you don't have the win98 cd.

I have finally gotten a fix for my disappearing Precision 2 USB and thought I would share it here for any who are having problems with disappearing Sidewinder sticks. Here is two fixes sent to me by the UK MS support team:

This sounds like an issue we see from time to time with the non-powered Sidewinder devices. The problem is that the devices sometimes build up a small amount of static that can interfere with the signals passing through the cable. There is an easy way to fix this as outlined below.

1. Unplug the device and examine the USB connection on it.
2. You should notice that there are five metal parts to the plug.
>> The metal casing around the plug and
>> The four pins inside this metal casing.
3. Each of the pins needs to be connected to the metal casing by means of a metal conductor such as a paperclip or hair clip.
4. The connection only needs to be held for a second or two.
5. Do this for each pin inside the plug.
6. Once this is done you should be able to plug the device back into your PC now.

If the above does not work please try the following,
1) Remove all USB devices from your computer and uninstall the Sidewinder software.

2) Click START -> RUN, type "msconfig" into the box and press OK. Click on the ADVANCED button and put a check in the box labeled "Enable Startup Menu". Then click OK, OK and then YES.

3) When the computer restarts, you will see a menu, choose option 3, SAFE MODE and hit enter. When windows Boots u... Read more

Hi,

I've got a Microsoft Sidewinder (plug & play) gamepad, but when I plug it into the USB port, nothing happens and the pad doesn't seem to be recognised at all. Is it broken? Or am I just missing something.

Has anybody ever opened a Sidewinder 3D Pro? I'm trying to pull it apart to clean the buttons, they stick and cause all sorts of wierdness during games. I'm stuck on the base. There are four screws under the base and it seems there is a series of plastic tabs holding the unit together resisting my rehabilitation attemps.

I use the above joystick on the MS flight SimX. It seems to have no effect on trim. That is, the buttons allocated for trim seem to have no effect. Is that Pro2 problem, or the fltSimX problem?
