metro touch keyboard with a mouse.

Q: metro touch keyboard with a mouse.

Hi guys,
I've just installed win8 on my media PC, I'm really happy with it for the most part, it's not worse then win7, there are some small but helpful changes to wmc. Metro looks great on the tv. There is just one problem, when I click on text boxes in metro apps with the mouse I don't get a keyboard as you would if you touched the text box. This is particularly annoying as I don't have a keyboard in my lounge room, and it seems that there is a whole new interface that would be perfect on the tv that I can't use very effectively I know you can launch osk.exe from the desktop and then switch to metro and it will stay on top but it's not really a very smooth solution. So i suspect there is a reg hack that I can implement that will cause the mouse to launch the touch keyboard in metro - is there? can someone tell me what it is? or any other solutions that would enable me to effectively use the metro interface with only a mouse input would be great. If this can't be done I really do think it's a massive oversight from Microsoft! There is a good interface that is unusable without a keyboard or touch. If i was to buy a new touch mouse would that do the trick or is it going to behave like a mouse in this respect?

Thank you very much for your assistance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

To go with their new shiny operating system MS are launching their touch mouse.
You will be able to buy this at the bargain price of $79.99!!!!

Somehow I do not feel tempted to replace my 10year old 5 button mouse that has the paint worn off but still works perfectly. This cost the enormous sum Of ?4.50 call it $7; media keyboard ?6 ($9)

A:M$ touch mouse $49.99 keyboard $79.99!!

I've got a lot of old Ms hardware that I still use. They're pretty solid.

I'm really WTF on the price though. I can get a decent mechanical keyboard for less, and that will be significantly better in typing quality.

Hi, I'm new here and I really need some help with my laptop.
I have a Dell Inspiron 6400, running Windows XP Media Center Edition (I've had the laptop for almost 3 years) and recently I've been having problems with my wireless mouse, the laptop's keyboard and touch pad.
Recently (since last Tuesday) whenever I use my laptop's keyboard it lags very badly. It sometimes doesn't pick up letters and to type anything without missing letters I have to hold down a letter for a few seconds. Also my laptop's touch pad lags very badly as well. And lastly my wireless mouse lags, nowhere near as bad as the touch pad (a short pause every 2-3 seconds), but it's enough to be annoying, but the wireless keyboard is absolutely fine.

I've already done a few things, I've checked to see if any processes are using a lot of the CPU (none are), there's no unusual processes running either, I ran a virus scan and it found nothing, I ran chkdsk (/p and /r, neither found anything), and I replaced the ntoskrnl.exe file in my system32 folder (I was randomly getting errors saying that it was corrupt or missing when I turned on my laptop, but I think that fixed it), I've also plugged in a wired mouse in to my laptop and got the same lag as the wireless one.

Can anyone help me with this? I really need help

A:Wireless mouse lag and laptop keyboard and touch pad lag

Can't anyone help me?

Here's a little update.
The lag with the wireless mouse is gone, but the lag with everything else is still there.
I had to repair my windows install because I was randomly getting an error at start up saying that windows couldn't start because the ntoskrnl.exe file was missing or corrupted. Then it would only come up with a screen asking if I wanted to start safe mode, start windows normally, etc.
It came up with the ntoskrnl.exe error came up again after the repair, but it can start up now.
Please, someone help.

I have an Acer Aspire M computer with a touch screen that runs Windows 8.1. I was having issues with the touch screen, so I went to download the drivers from the Acer website. However, when I restarted my computer to complete the installation, it wouldn't allow me to use either the mouse, touch screen, or keyboard.
Normally, after loading, a personalized picture will appear on the screen, displaying the time, connectibility, and strength of the network. The user is then supposed to swipe up, click on, or press space to move the picture, at which point the login screen appears. My computer loads normally when starting, but won't allow me to use the mouse, touch screen, or keyboard to move the picture out of the way, so I cannot access the login screen.
I have already contacted the Acer company support and attempted to use the battery reset pinhole, but to no avail. Is there anything I can do, besides a factory reset or using it as a cat bed?

A:No touch, mouse, or keyboard input after computer reset

using it as a cat bed

Probably best.

You could uninstall those drivers, looks like you will need to do it from outside windows.

You would need a decent winpe., which you probably don't have, nigh on impossible to make one given your situation.

System restore to just before the problem may do the job.

Try that and see.

I upgraded to Windows 10 last week. Everything has been working fine. I needed to install some software in auto mode so I turned off UAC and rebooted. Now when the system comes back up none of the input devices work! The keyboard and mouse do not work and the touch screen is not working either. All I can do it hold down the power button to reboot. If I hold it down for 3 cycles it goes into auto repair mode. In that mode the keyboard mouse and touch screen all work fine. If I set it to reboot into safe mode when it reboots I still cannot use the keyboard mouse or touch screen. What's going on here? Can anyone help me? Chris

A:Horizon S2 keyboard mouse touch screen not working!

Strange. I think it could be a driver issue. Try reinstalling those drivers for your computer. If you need help, please respond! If that doesn't help, you can always restore to go back to when it was working fine.

To all those who keep on spouting the talking point that "touch" is the future of computing...
In fact is clearly is NOT. At least for the next half century is isn't.

As far as we can tell NOTHING is more efficient than the traditional keyboard and mouse for entering data, it is indisputable.

Perhaps in the following century there will be bionics that will allow those that want to compromise their bodies to use mere thought to transfer that data to a computer, but that is too far down the road to be concerned with now and even the near future, until then the rational, logical and practical issues mean that touch will not be the future except for playing with games or light texting on an WinPhone or Tablet.

A:Touch is NOT the "near" future of computing. Keyboard & mouse is.

In 50 years, the keyboard will still remain. The mouse won't. We've been using a QWERTY keyboard since the age of type writers. We've used computers with a keyboard until the mouse came into the game more than 25 years ago. It's not going to last a long time because if you have a UI that takes advantage of touch input, much like how the GUI took advantage of the mouse, it's gone. Not only that, there's gesture input as well...

Call it a change to how we interact with our PCs...

I bought a new 2in1 laptop. I have some requirements, but not a lot. I use ad block and Lastpass. Those are absolute requirements. Using Internet Explorer in Modern UI doesn't use any plugs-ins, so that's out. Firefox had a Modern UI Beta, but gave up on it. Chrome has a Modern UI version, but wants to turn my PC into a Chromebook.

The closest thing I can find is to use Firefox in Desktop mode in full screen. The only problem there is that the onscreen keyboard doesn't appear when it's needed. Also, when in full screen mode, the icon to bring it up the keyboard isn't visible. This makes this solution a non-starter, too.

I can't be the first person to have this problem. Has anyone solved it? This issue pretty much defeats the touch function for me.

with the mouse, it's easy. you just hold down ctrl while you select all the desired emails.

i can't figure out with the touch interface. if anyone knows, please help me out here.

A:can you select multiple emails with touch in Metro WinMail

I found the answer after some googling!

In order to select multiple items by touch in any metro app, on each item you want selected, you swipe the item to the right.

so if I want to highlight emails 1, 3, 4, 7, 8 to copy them to an email folder, I would select email 1 with my finger, then I would swipe email 3 to the right, then swipe emails 4, 7, and 8 to the right as well. then move it to the folder by selecting the move button at the bottom of the screen.

Touch mat wont let me use the touch only the mouse and the light stays on even when not in sprout workspace

A:touch mat not woring with touch only can use mouse

Hi @frostygirl13, and thank you for your post.Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts and other support personnel. My understanding of your post is that you are dealing with two issues, one, the projector lamp is on, when you expect it to be off, and two, the touch mat is not working for you. I am happy to give you a hand with this. For the first issue with the projector, I found the following post, with suggestions from forum experts @DavidPK and @WyreNut:  Sprout Projector.  This may be difficult to do based on your second issue. For the second issue with the touch mat, I would first make sure that you have all of your drivers up to date, and make sure you have the latest update for Sprout Workspace installed. You can use the HP Support Assistant, to check for updates. Please let me know how that works for you, and if it does resolve your issue, please mark this post as a solution. Kudos would also be appreciated.

My husbands ASUS touch screen laptop-keyboards are not working. I know it has windows 8. Core i3 intel inside. Like I said it is a touchscreen and neither the hardware keyboard or touch screen keyboard will do any thing (well it is like the computer understands i am doing something with the keyboard, but not typing. Ex. i will type and the curser line will do nothing but suddenly go like an italicized line. The mouse works and the touch screen works but I cannot type anything. I have wiggled the keys thinking maybe something is stuck but no help. also I have restored it to its factory settings thinking maybe he accidentally set some keyboard sleep command or something. We are both not smart at this, and again it is not my computer, he has it for work, so who knows what he did to it. But yeah, after restore it still wouldn't work and now I am stuck at the registration "getting started" windows and I cannot bypass them....or don't know how to without being about to type. The last it worked he said he cleaned it with pressurized air, so I don't know if that was too much for the keys...if he actually blew dirt into it, or what strange thing could have happened...but the fact that both touch screen and actual keyboard aren't working I am left stumped. I hope I gave enough information on the computer. It has that surface windows...he normally just uses the desk top mode. Ok thank you for any advice.

The computer treats touch pads as mice in most instances.
I used to know how to create a shortcut that would toggle it, apparently that command no longer works in win 7.

Mouse click to invoke Metro UI If you have a mouse with programmable buttons: The Windows Key is 'ctrl-esc' I have a Logitech mouse with programmable buttons. In the Logitech button settings you can program any button to go to the Metro UI: 1.) Go to your mouse settings; 2.) Choose a button; 3.) Select 'Keystroke Assignment; 4.) in the resulting 'Specify Keystroke' - Keystroke window: 5.) Simultaneously press Ctrl and Esc. 6.) Note: In the Logitech example, you cannot use your keyboard key-by-key to enter ctrl+esc. You must simultaneously press the control and escape key in the above window. [Hold down ctrl and esc] Worked for me. Explanation: I was frustrated that W8 dumped me into the old W7 desktop when I exited an application -- even if I started the application in Metro UI. Then I had to go back to keyboard to press Windows key. Now I have a mouse button to get me back to Metro UI. Editorial comment - DWJ: I think W8 should default to the Metro UI upon exit from any application. After many months of objecting to W8, I now like it -- but I do not like the extra key press on the Windows Key [on the keyboard] to get me back to Metro UI -- where I started. If Microsoft wants me to use the Metro UI, then Microsoft should dump me into the Metro UI whenever I exit any app.

"Horses for Courses."
I don't like Metro and I don't like having to swap from it to the Desktop.

This highlights the problem that a lot of people are complaining about, no control over the GUI.

If MS weren't being a "bunch of jerks", they would have included a setting to control the GUI:

Always show Metro"I'm feeling lucky"Always show the Desktop

One simple setting would satisfy the "Metro lovers" and the "Desktop lovers", but MS "knows better" than the users.

Hi all,

I just set up Win8 on a HTPC (yet to install Media Centre) and thought I'd share an unexpected challenge that I found. This is probably documented here somewhere anyway, but just in case it's not this may help others out.

I installed Win8 in my study with the HTPC hooked up to a 1080p computer monitor via DVI. Once I got it all working fine I moved it into the lounge room and hooked it up to the TV via HDMI. I am using a bluetooth keyboard with a built in trackpad, so I don't need a mouse in the lounge room. All of a sudden 3 things happened:
1 I was locked into Metro mode and could not access my desktop.
2. The keyboard stopped working, even though the trackpad on the same device was still working. Even a wired keyboard wouldn't work (but a mouse would).
3. Apps like IE stopped working, and gave an error something like "Your resolution is too low to run this application".

WTF?! My TV is old, with a native res of 1366x768. It's not especially high res, but it's not terribly low res either. And being locked into Metro mode meant I couldn't figure out how to check/change my screen res.

Swapping monitors back and forth, I found it worked fine on the PC screen but not on the TV screen.
After much head scratching, I eventually hooked them both up at once. Then I could view the desktop on the PC screen (it still had Metro on the TV). With both panels attached I could bring up the screen res dialog and see what the resolution of each panel was. Win8... Read more

anyone have a list of keyboard shortcuts for the netflix metro app?

its a nice looking interface but is optimized for touch even though it looks good as a 10' UI.

It seems it requires the mouse for some things but if there are KB shortcuts it would be nothing to map them in eventghost to mce remote buttons.

Anyone know them if they exist? they arent documented on the netflix site. i want to make this app usable from the couch.

Read other answers

I multi-boot so in order to get the keyboard working across several OS's seamlessly, i.e. without having forever to reinstall them each time, it's vital to install the KB without a passkey, which means I need the old wizard and not this flashy yet very dumbed down Metro interface where I can't see what the heck is happening.

The question is HOW? ;-)

By the way, the mouse doesn't matter as it doesn't use a password. I am starting out on the desktop and right-clicking the Bluetooth icon by the clock, display Bluetooth devices, but as soon as the connect button is pressed this new Metro look kicks in. But if I connect the mouse in 8 then it becomes totally disabled in the other OS's because I can't get the wireless set to Hardware-Based rather than Software-Based.

Also how does one put back a missing Bluetooth item in the Control Panel? I see bthprops.cpl is in System32 but for some reason appears nowhere in the CP icons or category view. - that last part was sorted out.

A:How To Get Up The Non-Metro Bluetooth Keyboard Connection Dialogue?

The reason I wanted to avoid the passkey was that Bluetooth dongles rarely have the capacity to remember multiple passkeys so for a multi-boot setup it's a nightmare of re-pairing often.

I just tried an experiment. I paired my Microsoft BT mouse and keyboard in Windows 8 in the normal way and allowed the passkey pairing for the keyboard, which cannot be bypassed in any way in Windows 8. Then I opened Microsoft Mouse (or Keyboard) software and went to the Wireless tab > Bluetooth Connection > Advanced and made sure it was set to Hardware-Based, meaning the hardware is not controlled by the software as far as connections are concerned.
This allows my Vista, Windows 7 and even my XP VM's to keep their connection and continue functioning properly with no passkey.
I posted this to help others in the same situation.
By the way, there is a quick tutorial HERE (scroll down) on how to connect any Bluetooth device that normally requires a passkey, without one, but it only works in systems up to and including Windows 7. The enhanced UI in 8 has scotched any chance of it happening there.

It isn't a perfect solution as it doesn't always work but it will have to do. At least now I don't have to switch off my BT hardware because I'm scared 8 will auto-connect it and screw up the other OS setings.
One would have thought that Microsoft with all their expertise could have thought of this, especially when it's their own hardware involved.

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 on my little laptop. For the first day the mouse/touch pad was not working at all. Then after I plugged in my other wireless mouse, it all of a sudden started working. So now I can move the mouse around, and click on things, but the scroll does not work and two-finger-double tap does not right-click. I've opened up the mouse settings, and it seems as though the wireless mouse is still plugged in, but it is not! I see nothing about a synaptic (or whatever it's called) touchpad, nothing about enabling it, or settings for it. Please help!

Hi folks ,in preparation for my birthday i have ordered myself an Arc touch mouse,

do any of you have experience with it and if so whats the verdict.
i have read plenty of reviews but here we get to ask questions

Microsoft Arc Touch Mouse: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

A:Arc touch mouse

I played with it in the store, but didn't really care for it much. But then again, I'm also a trackball fan...so that often influences my mouse choice.

Microsoft sadly discontinued my mouse of choice. Been using these for about 7 years now. It's the Microsoft Trackball Explorer. I own 3 of them. 2 at home and 1 at work.

I've had my desktop for a few years and never had a problem.  Just recently, it has started showing a Keyboard Error message on a black screen when I boot it up.  The wireless keyboard and mouse do not work, although it appears to boot up correctly.  Since I have a password on my computer, I cannot log in or do anything.  When this happens, I've rebooted 2-3 times, and it the keyboard and mouse will finally start working.  I have moved the toggle to different USB ports and this does not appear to make a difference.  How do I prevent this from happening?

I want to remove the monitor, basically gut it, and turn the keyboard and trackpad of my laptop into a keyboard with built-in mouse for my desktop. It's an old laptop that I was thinking about throwing away anyway, so I might as well turn it into something useful.

look at attachment.

I want be able to connect that to my desktop with USB and be able to use it as both keyboard and mouse (have both the keyboard and trackpad work)

My desktop is right next to my bed, so I sometimes swing the monitor around and put the keyboard and mouse on the bed. But it's damn hard to use a mouse when you have bedsheets and blankets and other stuff that's soft as a surface.

Also, I can't have any compatibility problems, it needs to work with all 3 systems in my house that I may want to connect it to. Mac OS, Windows XP/Vista, and Linux (Ubuntu and Fedora)

would anyone happen to know, and can give me a step-by-step?

My Arc touch Mouse periodically doesn't work.  I thought it was after updates and then worked again with the next update but no longer sure about that.  I think after using a USB mouse (taking up the one USB port on my Surface 4) for a while the
Arc Mouse works again once I try and reinstall the driver.
I can always tell if the mouse will work when I reinstall.  If the driver stays in the mouse/keyboard/pens portion of the dialog box I'm good but it often jumps down to the other devices section and will not work.
Very Very Annoying!!!

The scroll on the touch pad causes my cursor to freeze on the screen. It displays a frozen tiny scroll bar on my screen with the cursor attached. Locks up  the compute. Have to log off to get it working again. Help!

A:touch pad mouse locking up

maybe hit ESC a few times. Once you are out of the lockup, see if there is an update to the touchpad driver. Also, check the touchpad settings (some model let you define which area and the size for the scroll, etc).
