Preferred Solution: White 'File' icon showing over top of normal desktop icon

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello JingleJangle, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It looks like your shortcut arrow overlay icon got messed up somehow. You can use either method in the tutorial below to restore the arrow icon. Method Two is the easiest way with the program.

Hi, all of a sudden and for no reason, various icons have stopped loading for both the programs and files used by these programs:

Microsoft Edge
Various Windows Programs

The programs still work fine but I would like to have the icons back.
This seems to be a problem that many people are having but I can find no definite solution.

Any ideas?

When I would create a desktop icon for a website in Windows XP, I'd see an icon that was specific to the site. You know, like the round fox with the flaming tail for Firefox, or the red M for gmail.

But when I drag a url and drop it to the desktop in 8.1 (using Firefox, btw), I get none of the site-specific icons. I see them in my bookmarks list but on the desktop every icon is only the white rectangle that I thought indicated a file, on your computer, not an internet website. What gives? Is this a Firefox thing? Can I create a desktop icon in another way? I seem to recall that in XP creating one was as simple as a right mouse click anywhere on your site and picking "create desktop icon", but that doesn't work in 8.1

I'm an old fuddy duddy, and I want desktop icons as well as bookmarks, and I don't want them all to look the same. I can put up with not being able to do anything about the text color for the names of icons if I can actually have a, hello, different icon for every site.

To anyone who can and will help--thanks.

A:ALL my website desktop icons show as same white FILE icon

I usually drag the little icon on the left end of a URL in the Address bar to the Favorites toolbar or to the Desktop, not the URL itself. The icon itself relies solely upon a Web site having a favicon.ico file on it somewhere. [I've lost track of it but I used to have a small program that could harvest favicon.ico files and save them but that was back with WinXP and IE6, don't know if it would work with later versions.]

Hello,

All of sudden, most of the shortcut icons on my desktop have a white rectangle added to them with a small system icon in the middle of this white rectangle. Making a new shortcut still creates this "sub-icon". However, if I simply create a text document on the desktop it's ok. The weird thing is that some icons have this problem and some don't (e.g. folder shortcuts) - see screenshot below.

I have tried deleting the iconcache.db file and running a tweak called LnkFix, both to no avail. I also booted in Safe Mode and they are there too.

In desperation I did an 18 hour Acronis system restore to a few days ago when I don't recall having the problem. Still there!

Any help would be most welcome.

Kind regards

Hello all.
First time here and probably not the last on account of Murphy's Law.
My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium Edition (x64).
I installed IE11 with no problems.
Once completed, I rebooted but could not locate the IE desktop icon.
Inspected the Internet Explorer folder. All files seem to be there including the .exe file. After clicking on this IE11 .exe file, nothing happened.
Checked the Control Panel to ensure IE11 was in fact installed and that it was "activated." All in order.
This is a mystery as I have used previous versions of IE without any problems.
Any attempts, to resolve this glitch, will be appreciated greatly. Cheers.

Double check to make sure that you have the have the Services "Network

"Network Store Interface Service" set to Started and Automatic. If these
are not, then it can cause the Network icon to not function properly.

There's two settings that can cause it.

1. Right click the desktop and choose 'arrange icons by' and make sure that 'lock web items on desktop' is unchecked.

2. Open the Control Panel and select System. On the Advanced tab click the settings button under Performance. The box for 'use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop' should be checked.

hi, i've begun to really get concerned and annoying with my problem.

It never did this before, sort of out of the blue. Ive also done all sorts of virus/ad-ware scans, defrag, etc...

Everytime i reboot, desktop loads fine, all icons etc. Even virus program shows up in start bar. But the computer will laag and i cant really do anything until a few minutes pass by and the Wireless Icon shows up in the start bar. Its important since i Use it to connect to the internet.

Does anyone know why it could be taking so long to load up and start. Everything else seems to load up. After it finally shows itself, everything runs smoothly. up to 5 minutes is abnormally too long of a wait just for the wireless connection to load.

On another note, my startup does seem a little longer than nornal when it first starts before the xp logo there is a blinking dash line and it blinks longer than it use too.

Sorry for the long explanation, if anyone has any ideas please let me know. Ive also tried uninstalling wireless connection and letting it reinstall and drivers r updated.

A:Wireless Icon not showing up after boot, and desktop laags until it shows up

Check your MSCONFIG (start/run/msconfig/enter) go to the startup tab and this has what your XP loads on bootup. In there look at each entry and decide if you REALLY need it or not. BTW Spyware and ad-ware will put junk in there as well. Uncheck anything you don't want loading on startup and you will notice the PC starting quicker.

Be careful playing in this though as if you disable too many devices you can have other issues.

Things to try.
1. Drag and drop to recycle bin.
2. Right click on it, delete
3. Right click on it, send to mail recipient, mail it to yourself and then delete the new mail.
4. Send to dvd,usb memory stick and then format to remove it.
You could also use a little program, (Search Everything) find it and remove it. With this program you must be careful what you are removing.

I'm hoping it's not a virus, and so far my anti-virus has not detected any viruses. It was a downloaded mp3 file that a friend grabbed from some random website.

Hi all,

Since many years we are using custom BMP files as icon for one of our programs. That has always worked correctly, until Windows 8 (and Windows Server 2012) came. When we create the shortcut on our desktop and we browse to the network location where the BMP
file is and we click ok, we see the icon correctly in the "preview", but as soon as I click OK twice and I go back to the desktop, the shortcut is white, with no icon.

But when I place the BMP file on the local drive and I browse to it, it displays correctly in the previewer AND on the desktop.
This behaviour occurs on both Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. Who knows how to resolve this?

I really don't like your idea of a practical joke, but on the technical side, you could always use a shortcut to the video--I'm guessing that its a shortcut you wan't to replace anyway, so the tiny curvy arrow won't matter.

Do you mean the actual file name or are you talking about the horizontal icon spacing, which if made bigger enables you to place a longer file name on one line?

If it is the latter, just right-click the desktop and choose Personalize>Windows Color>Advanced Appearance Settings.

From the Item: drop-down list choose Icon Spacing (Horizontal) and choose a size.

Click OK>Apply.

Hello
I have been using a trial version of VISE 3.6 Installer Software for self installing my VB6 program onto other windows machines automatically.

The problem is when I go through the wizard and set up a Desktop Icon to point to my .exe file, it comes back with runtime error "53" file not found.
When The program has installed on another computer when you right click on the Desktop Icon for the program, the path appears to be correct:-

In the Icons Property box:-

PATH="C:\Program Files\Program.exe"
START IN = "This box is empty"

However the START IN BOX needs to have this placed in to make it work:-

Start in="C:\Program Files"

The program works fine when I manually add this in, but the Installer should do this for me automatically as I cannot go round to every computer!

If anybody knows what I am doing wrong please let me know?

All the files are in the Program Files folder it just seems that the start in box has to be filled in as well as shown above to make it point to the actual file.
Thanks

Gary.

I tried [Explorer > Tools > Folder options... > View tab > Always show icons, never thumbnails] and that does fix the Desktop image file icons so they *all* show the same *real* image file icon, but that setting also affects Explorer "Large Icons" view (thumbs) -- Explorer stops showing thumbs when I select "Large icons" view.

I did a thorough search here and found several posts regarding customizing icon behavior but none address this exact problem, so please re-examine the description of the problem before telling me this issue has been answered many times before. Thanks!!!

Hi, a while ago, I was annoyed with having the little shortcut arrows on desktop icons. I decided to try to find a way to have them removed, so there would be no arrows for shortcuts, and I looked on the internet for how to do so.

1. One site had me download a registry edit thing, and change my registry.
2. Another site let me download a program that would supposedly remove the shortcut arrows.

And, for a while, one of these methods worked, and I didn't have any arrows on my icons! But then, for some reason, it backfired, and now I have that strange 'unknown program' icon in place of an arrow. Here, http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...s/Untitled.jpg
(It's a safe image, don't worry)

The problem is, I really don't know which of the two things above made this happen, but I can't get it back. What can I do? I'd be fine with or without the arrows, but just not how it is now!

This happened over a year ago, I do not remember the names of the programs, what I did with the registry, and I cannot use system restore that far. Please help with any solution. I have Windows 7.

A:[SOLVED] Icons on desktop have 'missing file icon' instead of shortcut arrow?

Well, the first thing I am going to ask is if you backed up your registry (You never should make changes to the registry - especially if its a never heard of online tweak - without backing it up) That's the short fix, if you did not back up your registry then please bare with me.

Please test the following:
-Double click "My Computer"
-Go into your C:// drive
-Enter the "Program Files" folder
-Go into any folder containing an installed program, and right click on the exe file inside
-"Create Shortcut"

If a shortcut is created within the folder without that ugly missing file icon, then you can just simply go and do that with all your other programs, drag the shortcuts to your desktop, and delete the previous shortcuts. (Then you can rename them something more straightforward, instead of shortcut to so and so just so and so)

If that did not work, I would try a registry cleaner. CCleaner is free and has a basic registry optimizer built in, though you could try a more specific program, such as a RegSeeker.

If none of those work, then please get back to me on it. (I'll probably have thought of another fix by then)

By the way, now that you mentioned those shortcut arrows, I'm getting annoyed at the ones on my desktop!

A while ago, ALL my htm and html file icons in Windows Explorer changed to white paper icons with the corners turned town.

I do not have this problem with any other icons--just htm and html.
I do not have this problem with other file managers, such as XYplorer or Shelless.

The problem is only htm and html file icons in Windows Explorer.

Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks,
Janet

I have a toolbar on my taskbar titled "Programs". It has about eight folders in it. I made another toolbar, and placed it directly adjacent to the Programs toolbar, to obscure the eight folders and force it to be a dropdown menu.

Trouble is, as soon as I lock my taskbar, right next to the arrow that displays the eight items of my Programs toolbar in menu-form, one of the eight items is showing up as an icon, as if the other toolbar isn't close enough to the Programs toolbar in order to completely obscure the eight items.

Here's what I mean in graphic form:

It's bugging me to no end. Anyone else had this problem/resolved it?

A:Toolbar on taskbar should only be showing an arrow but is showing icon

Hello thewonkits, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I notice this happens when using small icons for a toolbar. If you like, you could unlock the taskbar, right click on the dotted separator line to the left of the two top far left toolbars (one at a time) click on View and Large Icons, then lock the taskbar to see if that may look ok to you. It will make the top row a bit bigger though.

Hopefully someone may know a better way to hide that bit of icon poking out when locked.

A:Every icon is white with box in it how do i fix!

You may have changed a Windows setting. Try a System Restore and choose a date before the problem started occurring. If you are using XP open Help, which has a link to System Restore to start it.

The "no icon" icon is that icon that shows while the system is booting up, smaller than other 'normal' desktop shortcut icons. It is then replaced with the 'official' icon for that shortcut..

After removing some malware that prevented access to the internet, I found that all my desktop shortcut icons are now overlaid with that "no icon" icon.
If I drag a new shortcut icon off windows explorer, as soon as I release the mouse drag - that "no icon" icon immediately over lays the original icon.
They still work, but is untidy and makes the original icon unreadable.

I created a new user, and upon logging that user on, all IT'S desktop shortcut icons are also over laid.

What to do?

Download and Run malwarebytes the long scan. Upadate before scanning
If you used another scan, use malwarebytes

Then try this

Good morning guys!
I have just seen this icon in my adobe photoshop & adobe illustrator program folder.
I don't know if this icon is normal or it is a virus .
Any help will be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

A:Is this icon normal in windows ?

I've never seen it before but given that both are executable files, the norm is that the icon is created by the developer (not by Windows itself) so it wouldn't be rare to see different things.
To be sure, check the file properties and see if the digital signature is valid and from Adobe itself.
