Muffled sound with Realtek and Win 7

Q: Muffled sound with Realtek and Win 7

Im having a problem which is driving me mad, muffled sound which makes speech (both in games and on youtube etc) completely inaudible. Just sounds like lots of bass and nothing much else.
I have a Foxconn G31mx motherboard which has built in Realtek audio running Windows 7 32bit. I have downloaded the latest Win7 drivers from both Foxconn and Realtek which has made no difference. I thought it may have somthing to do with a recently installed ATI 4850 gfx card as this has a HDMI port but looking at the installed playback devices all that is available is ''Speakers - Realtek high definition audio device'' which is set as enabled and default and ''Realtek digital output - Realtek high definition audio device'' which is disabled. I have tried every possible combination of enabling and dissabling the various options without success.
Any advice or help would be greatly recieved as my little girl is loosing the will to live not being able to play on Nick Juniour website lol.....
Many thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I just bought the Y50 yesterday with the GTX 960M. Unfortunatly i noticed while playing that the left speaker started to do a clicking noise, in addition the sound became muffled. When i tilt the laptop the problem is resolved i.e. the clicing stops and the sound returns to normal. After a few minutes the same problem returns until i tilt the laptop or lift it again.

Hey everyone. I just installed a new sound card (upgrade from O/B sound), when i play music like in Windows Media Player it sounds great. But when i play videos like on You tube its all muffled. What would cause this? Thanks.

A:Muffled Sound

It's probably just from the low bitrate used on online videos. The sound quality of those is bad because of it. If your sound is good with good audio files, then there's nothing wrong with your setup.

Some days ago I started noticing that the sound coming from my PC suffered from some kind of muffled distortion. I use earphones and theyre perfectly fine, since they work properly with any other device.

Windows 7 x64 (Completely updated according to automatic updates)
Realtek High Definition Audio

This kind of muffled sound occurs at random times in a video, song, etc, I honestly cant specify when does the distortion occur, its mainly a few times at random.

I connect my earphones to an audio entry in the volume and bass control wheel of my speakers and sub woofer.

What have I done recently that could have affected the sound?

-As I had said before, the earphones work perfectly fine, but the sound distortion occurs with all the earphones I have tried. So discard this.

-Recently I removed my speakers' cables which are connected to the sub-woofer, and the sound problem has started occuring closely to when I plugged them back again. This made me think that I messed up with the cables connected to my sound system, but unfortunately this isnt the problem, since when I connect my earphones to the PC tower audio entry, the muffled distortion occurs aswell.

Basically I must discard the effectof any peripherals and therefore believe that the problem revolves to the sound card

I would go to Realtex and download the driver from their website. Microsoft's device drivers are generic the ones from the manufactures are better.

If you installed any drivers for your graphics and audio from Microsoft I would download and install the latest from the manufactures website.
Also do you have any codec packs installed? E.g Codec pack lite etc...?

I've noticed that the sound on my HP dv7 laptop seems more muffled that it used to. I was trying to watch a video with the volume on low last night and I couldn't really make out what was being said. Usually this is fine.

Any ideas? - I checked the speaker drivers in control panel and apparently they are up to date and working okay.

I'm running win 7 RC by the way. Before that it was vista.

A:Sound Muffled

did this whappened when you started using W7? Drivers for audio on laptops almost always contain software that will enhance the quality of the sound produced by the speaker(s), a thing that can't be done with generic drivers.

Not sure what help this might be, but keep it in mind while you troubleshoot:

If the audio entering an amplifier is too high, it will muffle. FOr ex: your computer sound is turned up, sending high amounts of ausio to powered-external speakers. those speakers will then have bad distortion, mostly at high olume points in the ausio track. (also sometimes at high bass points). try turning your pc volume quite low and see if the problem presents with standard, unamplified headphones directly connected to the pc. If this solves it then it is an amplifying problem almost guranteed.

Im having with w7 atm when i play music the sound is all muffled and screechy like its being amplified kinda like when you turn the equalizer up full. Ive gone through the sound settings but there arent any that i can see that would be causing the problem. The sound card shows up as Creative AudioPCI (ES1371,ES1373) (WDM) under device manager which is the drivers that installed automatically from windows update.

A:muffled sound

have you looked in control panel for the creative audio software, im not familiar with your sound card but it may have a settings panel in control panel.
,has this recently started happening have you installed any sound software recently and have you had an update that may have affected it?
if its a fairly recent thing then maybe a system restore to the point before it started happening will help.

I have a self-assembled desktop PC - full specs in the signature below, but in short, it has an AMD Phenom II X6 1090T processor on a Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P mainboard, which uses a Realtek Azalia ALC887 on-board sound system. I have no loudspeakers and listen to the computer sounds exclusively through a Microsoft LX-1000 headset. I also have a Logitech C270 HD webcam that has its own microphone. My PC has 16 GB RAM, a SSD and a large HDD. It runs Windows 8.1 Update 1 with all Windows updates (Patch Tuesday was this week, but my problems had started before that and I'm sure they're unrelated).

Everything is working fine, except the audio, which started behaving strangely a few days ago for no apparent reason. The problems started suddenly and I can't think of anything that could have caused them. There were no hardware changes or any intervention in the hardware, nor did I install any new software that could have messed up things.

When playing music, it sounds muffled, with the volume very low and the voice and several instruments muted, while other instruments in the background arrangement sound relatively louder. No graphic equalizer is on, and this happens with any player software (Windows Media Player, VLC, Media Player Classic, etc.), and any source (MP3 music, audio CDs, DVDs, videos, etc.). There appears to be no hardware problem with either my headset or the onboard audio: when I run both Windows' native and Realtek's driver sound output tests, the test tune comes out... Read more

I am working on my neighbors computer. It's one I gave her, but I am always trying to get the best performance out of this old thing. It's a running a Mitac motherboard from a Compaq computer with a 500MHz processor, 253MB's of RAM, an ATI PCI video card and an AOpen PCI sound card.

I just reformatted and put Windows 2000 on there. It's a bit slow for the system, but W98 is so unstable and I had little success with that.

The installation went fine. I even updated the BIOS. Now it does have onboard audio, but disabled it, in one way or another, in the BIOS (It still shows up in device manager though for some reason, but that's now disabled)

I also ran into putting in possibly a hacked or virus-infected program on it and it, of course, screwed things up. Luckliy I was able to reload everything and get on with the installation of some other programs.

The problem is, that during start-up, the Windows start-up sound is slightly muffled. I tried putting in a different wave start-up, but it did the same thing. I'm pretty sure the problem isn't the sound card either, since I tested the wav in "Sounds and Multimedia" in Control Panel. It sounded fine there.

I also messed around with the advanced features in that category and changed things like hardware acceleration and such, but I really don't know what I'm doing there.

So it appears to me that the problem is in the startup boot sequence itself, right? Or what else could i... Read more

Ok this is my first post on any tech help forum so my apologies if i miss out any key information.

Here's the problem, since purchasing my HP Pavillion dv7-1020ea laptop i have had intermittent problems with my speaker sound going muffled, quieter and losing all high tones. This is a continuous problem from the moment the computer starts and doesnt change.

My laptop runs vista 64 with IDT High Definition Audio codec and the drivers are up to date. I have tried enabling and disabling the device, it says it is working fine. Sound from my headphones works fine with none of the muffling. In the IDT control panel, the settings are set correctly, im not attempting to run surround sound or anything.

At first I thought it was a bad connection or something but suddenly the problem disappeared and never happened again for 6 months. But recently I reformatted my PC and as soon as my PC was running again the problem resurfaced. Restarting my PC sometimes fixes it but more often than not it doesn't.

Its very frustrating because I can't pin the source of the problem down. I dont think its a bad connection because it worked fine for 6 months and then when i reformatted it came back. I never experience crackling or jerky sound or short periods of good or bad sound. When i turn my PC on and it wrks, it works fine until my PC is turned off. The problem never just happens as im using my PC, it turns on with the problem, or it turns on without it.

I'm a noob when it comes to the computer world so bear with me. My laptop is about 3 years old and about a year ago, my sound started to get muffled and I couldn't hear voices when I played games. Whenever I move the earphones in the audio jack, I can sometimes pick up the voices, but I have to keep it steady of put a pillow under it to keep it like that. Is it just my computer? Or did something change?

A:Muffled Sound and can't hear talking.

Either the headphone jack is defective or the headphone plug. To determine which it is, use a different headphone (or the small earphones like are used on MP3 players) and see if that works properly. If it does then the jack in the PC is the problem. Unfortunately either the motherboard or a "daughter board" I/O board will have to be replaced. The jacks are enclosed and not (usually) repairable. The printed circuit boards are multi-layer and unless you have the special tools to work on a multi-layer circuit board you can't fix it yourself by replacing the jack.

One other outside possibility. A few PC's, but not all, have the option to reassign the jacks with a Sound Configuration panel. If yours has this, you MAY be able to make the "Line In" jack a headphone jack.

I just got my laptop on Wednesday, (yay,) but when I tried going on Youtube I noticed the sound is very muffled.  I compared it to my old laptop and the sound was much better on the old one.  Heck, the sound on my phone is better.  The same thing happened when I switched to Windows 10 on my old laptop so I went to Microsoft support chat.  They only told me to do the usual stuff I had already found in other searches.  The sound is still muffled and very annoying to listen to because it's like something is covering my speakers.  Can anyone help?

Hi Shay4383,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
You can first start to run diagnostics to check on the integrity of the internal parts. One in particular is the harddrive so it would be interesting to isolate what is the part that cause the noise.

This has been a problem for me for a few months now, but it's just getting unbearable.
So, here's the situation:Oftentimes, my headphones give out muffled audio. It makes it virtually impossible to make out human speech, and just generally isn't very good. In the past, I could fix this by adjusting the headphone jack somewhat, but over time I've had to do it more violently and I'm concerned at this point that I'll harm the computer if I continue doing it. Now, whenever it happens, I have to wiggle the jack around with a decent amount of force to get it to work properly.
I'm not particularly good with computer hardware, so I'm not entirely sure what the exact issue could be. If you need any more information, just ask. I'd be happy to provide it. Any help is appreciated.

Hello. Test by switching to the Windows native audio driver.
1. Open the Device Manager2. Expand the Sound, Video & Game Controllers section.3. Right click on the Realtek and select to uninstall.4. Put a check mark in the option to delete the driver software, and then ok.5. Restart the laptop and go back to the Device Manager and check again for a Realtek driver. Keep uninstalling & restarting until Realtek no longer appears under Sound...Controllers and "High Definition Audio Device" appears in its place. "High Definition Audio Device" is the name of the native driver.
[The reason you might have to go through the process more than once is because the driver files for more than one Realtek driver could be on the hard drive. When a Realtek driver is removed, the next one gets installed if Windows can locate the files. Windows installs its generic driver only after all Realtek files have been removed.]
6. At this point, test the audio while the native driver is installed and see if the same problem occurs.
7. When finished testing, download and install a fresh copy of the Realtek driver for your operating system. Get it from your Dell support page. Test the audio again
If the same problem occurs with both the Realtek and the native driver, then probably not a software issue.

Hi guys...

However, while running games/music/films I get sound from all my speakers (though not very satisfactory and not real surround sound). Can anyone please help me with this?

Also, I can't open Realtek HD Audio Manager (RTHDCPL.exe). Only RTLCPL.exe (Sound Effect Manager) works. When I click on RTHDCPL.exe nothing happens. Please do help out.

A:No Sound From Surround/Centre/Subwoofer In Realtek Sound Effect Manager Test

try this:

1) try to go to the settings of your sound effect manager & there are selections there for 2.0, or what ever you may find that corresponds to your speaker channel.

2) if nothing corresponds to the given selections, try to download the latest audio driver from your motherboard's manufacturer website.

3) otherwise, you need to plug-in a sound card that has the feature to play with 6.1 channel audio.

The realtek audio managers shows that the front two inputs, front mic and headphones, are always plugged in when there is nothing in them at all. When I plug in my speakers to the back green input for sound it inputs both the green one, front speakers out, and the blue input, line in.

Now I get no sound when I set it to HD audio but I get a little sound when its set to ac97. Also there is a constant static ringing sound going on. When the computer is first turned on the speakers do a very large pop, then start winding up getting loader and loader and pops again. Then it just sits with static. This happened when I turned my computer back on.

I tested the speakers and they work just find on other devices so its not the speakers.

How the heck does this happen and how does one fix this?

Thank you guys.

Hello everyone,

My audio has seem to quit on me. I updated to the newest drivers for my mobo (biostar A870U3) from their download page and now I get no sound whatsoever from my speakers. I have tried uninstalling all of the sound devices from the device manager and letting windows reinstall them, but to no avail. I have also made sure that the onboard sound is on in the bios. When I uninstall the sound devices, it defaults back to the windows default audio driver which won't recognize something is plugged in.
It greys out my speakers and then defaults to the Digital Ouput, but I have no such device. I then have also tried downloading the onboard audio drivers from the mobo download page and installing them. They install but it then defaults to the Realtek Digital Output (once again, I don't have such a device). If I go to the realtek HD audio manager and disable front panel detection, it doesn't even recognize any of my back panels being plugged in. Even if I try to plug in my headset mic, the manager doesnt pic it up.
If I play music at this point, the speaker shows the level volume changing but I dont hear anything. I've tried switching back and forth all configurations in the manager and changed the levels of things, still nothing. Can anyone help? Or am I gonna have to go pick up a sound card?

That picture also shows it trying to use the front jack, which I dont have hooked up because I want to use the back panel. So I'm assuming that may be part of the reason. And ... Read more

The first thing I see is four HD Audio devices in the Device Manager that should be uninstalled (RIGHT click on the entry for the device and then LEFT click Uninstall) then restart the PC. Get rid of them to eliminate any possibile conflicts.

If there is a "default" setting for the sound outputs, set it to default and see if that helps.

I notice a web cam that is also showing up. They can tend to cause issues too so temporarily disconnect that from the PC while you are trying to get the system audio setup.

I tried to fix it myself...and probably i messed up a bit more, cause i disabled a driver that seemed to have a problem, but i don't remember what the name was. Now not only the programs have no sound anymore, but windows is silent too... It sure wasn't the driver of my soundcard (Realtek AC'97, which works fine when i play test sounds with the realtek Sound Effect software).
I installed Everest and he doesn't find any Windows Audio, and says the realtek has "noDB" (no database i suppose).
When i am in the music tab of the "Diagnostic help program for DirectX" (or something familiar to that, while i translate it from the dutch "Diagnostisch hulpprogramma voor DirectX") "windows synthesizer" test sound doesn't play, but the realtek does.

Any ideas? Should i reinstall Windows or upgrade to vista, or is it a less hopeless situation as i'm used to think now...

Thanks a lot for you help

Hi, I can't get 2-channel sound with ABIT AT7-MAX2 motherboard, integrated Realtek AC'97 sound. I've tried those drivers from www.abit.com.tw, but those ain't working neither. I have 5.1 Creative surround sound. I get sound from every speakers except the 2 channel ones, which are connected to green phohe jack (Front Speaker Out), everything is connected correctly but i just can't get no sound. The problem came after i had put my pc together into another case. Before that the sound was working. My headphones doesn't work either in that green phone jack.

Hii pls help. Im having difficulties with the sound on my pc.

Speaker type: microlab x4
Sound card: creative 5.1
OS: Win7

Creative 5.1 driver installed + realtek HD audio driver R263 installed.
When creative 5.1 driver is chosen as the default device, sound is coming but not from woofer and front speakers.
However when i play blu-ray movies (both on media player and vlc) sound is coming from all the speakers as opposed to sound coming only from the rear speakers when i play song from media player and youtube.

When realtek is chosen as the default device no sound is coming.

Hope you guys can help me out. thanks a lot.

A:No sound coming (realtek sound driver)

Creative and Realtek are two different audio chipsets. Most likely, you have a Realtek audio chipset on the motherboard and a Creative Sound Card installed.

The rear speakers working and the front not working, likely indicates a cable connectivity issue (ie: the output cable(s) of the sound card to the speakers) or possibly a speaker configuration issue in the audio setup.

Simply switching the default audio chipset won't help. YOu would also need to change where the cables are connected.

After I installed Windows 7,I started having a problem with sound. My sound card is onboard Realtek High Definition Audio. The problem is,sometimes I hear a "cht pht" while listening to music, radio, game on computer. After noticing this problem,I installed the latest drivers of Realtek, but nothing changed. Also I tried installing my motherboard's sound driver, but again nothing changed. Then I tried a previous driver cause I heard that it works better but nothing changed. Also I tried using other speakers, but nothing changed.I tried playing with sound settings, including "block all sound effects" but I still have the problem.

What can be the problem, this problem started after I installed Windows 7.

I have a windows xp pro SP3 system with a Realtek sound card. It was loaded with malware, and I used combofix to get rid of most of it. The sound disappeared and Im told the computer has no audio controller installed, and to install one.
In device manager, it says my Realtek HD audio card is working.
Ive tried uninstalling the driver and rebooting, letting it reinstall, Ive tried installing it manually as well, but every time, I get this error:
Error Code: -5009 : 0x800706ba
Error Information:
>Ctor\ObjectWrapper.cpp (407)
>Kernel\Component.cpp (1163)
>Kernel\CABFile.cpp (389)
>SetupDLL\SetupDLL.cpp (1541)
pAPP:Realtek High Definition Audio Driver
PVENDOR:Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
@Windows XP Service Pack 3 (2600) BT_OTHER 0.0
When I try to adjust the volume, Im told I had a violation and it will now close.
I even downloaded a hotfix from Microsoft, but windows update wont run.
Any ideas? A similar topic on another site had similar issues, but the solution didnt work for me.
Thanks in advance.

A:No Sound after ComboFix: RealTek Sound Card

That is why most of BC community suggests doing it with the help of an expert or a helper.
Combofix backs up files before deleting them. See in system restore points, any restore point created by CF?
if not,re-install the Windows.

I don't know how to title this too well but yeah.
I have been using a USB headset for quite some time but I recently purchased some Audio Technica ADH-700's. I've plugged them in and woolah!..
Just kidding.. No sound at all

I have an Avermedia Live Gamer HD Capture Card and with getting it to work with a usb headset there was a few things that were required to be done.
as seen in this thread below:
How to: Avermedia Live Gamer HD and streaming BF3 (PC) | Oscar Mike

But now I've got a 3.5mm jack headphones and a 3.5mm Microphone in the mail I don't need the usb way. So I've gone back (Well I hope) to the settings before the thread but nothing happens.
I have tried reinstalling multipul Realtek HD Audio things..

Any help would be much appreciated!

A:Realtek onboard sound. No sound

Have you reinstalled the ASUS supplied Realtek driver? In most cases the vendor (in this case motherboard vendor) driver works best. Non Vendor drivers can either not work or not work correctly.

Do you have the Audio Playback set correctly? The "Speakers" (in this case Realtek) should be set as the Default Audio Playback Device in the Sound Panel.

Also while you are in the Sound Panel, go to the Recording section and set the Stereo Mix as the default recording device.

Finally, make sure you have the front panel headphone/mic jack correctly connected to the motherboard front panel audio jack. The "HD Audio" connector from the front panel should be used (some also have an AC97 or only have an AC97 and that should only be used if there is no HD Audio).

I've seen alot of these realtek threads, searched around but didnt find anything that helped me, so please help me out guys!

Just got a new computer, first time on vista, very exciting times lol!

Everythings working fine, except my audio.

Now I have Logitech z-680 5.1 digital surround sound (old school but still awesome), their connected to my computer via the optical cable. My motherboard (gigabyte extreme X-58) has onboard HD sound. The amp that comes with my sound says its detected and displays 'Optical - digital' meaning that its detecting the digital output/input etc.

However there is no sound. I checked my drivers (which are the latest) and everything is working fine.

Is there something I'm doing wrong? I had a look in the Realtek HD audio manager and everything seems fine? There's a page for the digital output, but nothing on the digital input (just says status unlock).

Help meeeeeeeeeeee.

Hi everyone!
My desktop produces no sound at all. I've updated the driver "Realtek AC'97" with the software "Driver Genius Pro." What happens is I will get sound for a few hours then nothing at all, the sound is cut off. Before it was updated it would give me the same problems. I've check Device Manager and it says that the device is working. The only way it works again if I restart my computer but its very annoying when it happens. Also I got to check the sounds in "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" and I click to play one of the sounds I just a dialog box saying "Windows can not play this file it maybe damaged or may use an unrecognized compression format. install an Audio Compression in Add/Remove Programs." My computer is Windows XP Home SP3. Any ideas?
Thank-you all for your help

Hi Petlo99 and welcome. Try this, click Start and in the search bos type Device manager. Click on the Device Manager at the top of the list that opens above. Scroll to Sound Video and game cotrollers. Double click and see if the the Realtec entry has a yellow triangle next to it. Double click the Realtec entry and see if the resulting window shows any problems.
Post back your findings.
BTW I'm sure you are aware that you can't have both the speakers and the headset working at the same time!

A:No Sound in xp....realtek ac'97

As a place to start, if it were my PC I would remove all references to sound devices thru Device Manager. Then when rebooting, the system will re-install the hardware and the drivers.

HOPEFULLY, the problem will resolve itself at that point.

the other week i got a mic headset as i play online games. i have realtek HD audio manager, and so duz my friend. when he got his mic it didnt work, as you have to disable realtek for it to work. i did the same. it worked with just the mic, but then i plugged headphones in, they didnt work so i re-enabled and then re-disabled realtek. it wasnt very happy, and came up with an error message. somehting bout an illegal system DLL relocation. it seems this is a common problem and i fixed it using microsoft.com stuff.

then for a week or so everything was fine, until this morning. i got an error message about win32 messing up or sumthin. unfortunatley i didnt save it, and it hasnt happened again. but what has happened is that i have no sound! in control panel>> Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices>> Sounds and Audio devices properties; it says there are no devices. on the audio tab where there used to be a playback device, a sound recording device and a midi music playback device, there is now nothing. wtf? i was playing music yesterday and i even ripped a cd in the normal fashion. i havnt done anyhting to realtek, so why has it messed up.

The Gigabyte site only shows a Rev 1.3 and 1.4 for that motherboard. I did a search for rev 2.1 but did not find anything.

The Rev 1.4 uses RealTek audio and the 1.3 uses VIA HD Audio.

Ever since I got a new motherboard, I haven't been able to get my computer's rear line-out jack to work. My speakers are in working order and plug into the front headphone jack with no problem, but none of the rear jacks seem to be working.

In my attempts to fix this I've gathered that a lot of people have had issues like this with Realtek AC'97 drivers and built in sound cards, but none of the fixes I've read about have worked for me.

My motherboard is an Elitegroup PM800-M2. I'm running XP Professional, service pack 3.

All of my sound devices show as working in the device manager. I can adjust the volume, play a CD, whatever- it's just that no sound comes out unless I plug into the front headphone jack. Uninstalling and reinstalling the driver has not produced any meaningful results.

I'm hoping someone can help me. I'd be very grateful.

A:No sound from Realtek AC'97

It may be a faulty jack in the front of the case.
The audio is passed through the front jack
then back to the back jacks.
When you plug into the front,it opens the contacts
and disconnects the rears.
If the contacts don't return all the way the rears won't work.
Other thing to check is to make sure the audio connections
to the motherboard are correct.
Make sure the in and out connections are in the proper place.

Hi, I've seen similar problems on this forum, but no solution applied to me.
I've just bought a brand new Gigabyte K8NS mainboard with integrated Realtek AC97 Sound chip. The problem is that whenever I connect the speakers to the line out the jack sensing utility recognises it as a Line In, so I can't get ANY sound at all. Tried connecting to the microphone and the line in plug, but it still recognises it as a line in device.. The speakers are good, tested it on a different computer. I have not connected the Front Audio Panel, and the jumpers are set as it's shown in the manual- pins 5-6 and 9-10 are jumpered. I've tried messing with speakers settings, and none worked. (this are 2-chanell stereo speakers). When I dissable the UAJ (universal audio jack) feature, it doesn't swap the line-out into line-in, but still no sound.. this has been a little flustrating, cause I've spend 3 days trying to get it working, with no success.. and I don't want to buy a new PCI soundcard. Please Help.

A:Realtek no sound. HELP!!!

ya, i bought an asus p4mx-vp, and the sound wouldn't work, but when you bought the mothereboard, did it's installation disk come with an installation program for your sound card? This is what happened to me, i had to install the sound card, for it to work, even though it was part of the motherboard.
