Laptop will play system sounds but no other audio!

Q: Laptop will play system sounds but no other audio!

Hi, I recently upgraded to windows 7 (from vista) on my HP Pavillion dv9000 series (specifically dv9850ea)

Beforehand when I ran the upgrade advisor, I got a few warning about incompatabilities - the graphics card for example - but all seems fine after the upgrade.

My problem is with the audio - system sounds work fine, audio from youtube for example, works fine... but when I play divx videos (still need to test other formats) there is no audio with either media player or divx player. Also when I play a song on itunes, it will just hang on 00:00 and go no further.

I know its not a driver issue, as some sounds ARE working... but im stumped!

Preferred Solution: Laptop will play system sounds but no other audio!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

It is probably one of a few things. a driver or codec, or configuration issue.
Just because sound works on some formats doesnt necessarily rule out a driver so I would check in device manager.

Codec--You may need one to plat the respective format, or you may have two codecs conflicting.

Config--something is configured incorrectly like a control panel

Can anyone help me!?!?!? I have an hp pavillion 750c with XP Pro. My system sounds are not playing. I can play audio with Winamp with no problem but when I check the properties for Sounds and Audio Devices it says there are no audio devices, playback devices, etc. I have rolled back, uninstalled and updated drivers (not necessarily in that order) and have had no luck......Today all system sounds came back after a System Restore but were gone again after the next time I started up. What is going on here!?!?!The audio driver is Intel(r) 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller

I'm running windows 7 ultimate on an acer aspire 3050.

System sounds play fine, sound from my internet browser plays fine, but any audio file I try to play doesn't work, any video I play has no audio.
I've tried playing different files with different players (Windows media player, media player classic, divx player, quicktime player, vlc player)
Audio and video files start up in WMP and then an error pops up "windows media player encountered a problem" all other players will play the file but no sound is produced.

I need help here, I've tried everything from system restore, reinstalling the players, downloading new audio files to test, to reinstalling my audio driver.

I'm out of ideas here

Hi Designation7,

Welcome to the forums. Have you installed a codec pack? I can recommend Shark007's as one of the best around
Shark007.net - Windows 7 Codecs - WMP12 Codecs

If you have already installed one, there could be a problem with it, so try Sharks.

Good Luck

I have an unusual problem: my Audio Output Devices are all sorts of confused. I can't change the default device, nor disable/enable any devices, and no sound comes out.

My notification tray shows there are No speakers of headphones plugged in.

Sometimes it says No Audio Output Device Is Installed.

If I click on it, it tries to fix it, but ends up showing the Audio device is disabled (Not Fixed):

When I open up Playback Devices, it is not disabled.

There is nothing under the Levels tab anymore

I have all devices shown.
At this point, I cannot change the default device nor disable certain devices, even though the options are not greyed out & I can select them. Selecting the actions just does nothing.

I don't think it's a hardware issue, because the audio devices change when I plug in the HDMI cable. It still plays no audio over it, but it switches the default device to the HDMI device.

I still cannot enable/disable, nor set default devices. Selecting the actions just does nothing.

Here is my Device Manager content:

I've reinstalled the devices using the drivers from my device manufacturer. I've heard that the HDMI graphics cards can interfere with the audio devices, and to that end I have uninstalled & deleted the drivers for both graphics devices & both audio devices. I've also used Driver Sweeper to remove the graphics devices.

This, coupled with the odd behavior of not being able to enable/disable/set default device... Read more

Some system event sounds won't play in Vista on my Dell Inspiron 1525. It was working until about a week or two ago and I have no idea what happened. I've searched here and elsewhere, chatted with Dell tech support and tried absolutely everything I can think of.

The problem is some even sounds work, like Startup, Shutdown, mail notification and some don't like Asterisk, Default Sound, Close Program. When I use the Test button in the sound scheme scheme area the sound will play, but then the sound won't play when the event happens in Windows.

Things I've tried:
-updated sound driver (confirmed with Dell support)
-upgraded to SP2
-checked items in services.msc to make sure Themes support and other sounds items are running
-used default sound theme and overall theme
-checked Mixer to make sure nothing is muted (even though some sounds are playing)
-other things I can't even remember

After upgrading to SP2 I apparently don't have restore points going back far enough.

Anything I can try? This is driving me nuts even though it's not anything critical. Thanks.

My Windows 7 computer won't play most sounds when an event occurs. I've already gone into the Sound window from Control Panel, and the sounds still won't play. The following program events DO play a sound : default beep, device connect, device disconnect, device failed to connect, empty recycle bin, windows change theme, windows logoff, windows logon, windows UAC, and start navigation. The following events DO NOT play a sound: Asterisk, Critical Stop, Exclamation, and System Notification. How can I fix this? I can appreciate any help. Thanks.

Have you tried changing the Sound Scheme to something other than the "Windows Default (modified)" that you have. Then change it back to the Windows Default Modified and see if that fixes it.

Hi everyone,

My USB headphones worked perfectly up until last week. The headphones still play the Windows 8 system sounds, but when I try to use them with Youtube or VLC, they don't play any sound. The strange thing is when I go to Playback devices, the headphones are connected and installed as the default device, and they work perfectly if I test them in the playback menu. Headphones also work when I connect them with the 3,5mm cable.

Any one knows what might have caused the problem and mainly how to solve it? Thanks!

Hello,I was hoping someone could help me with a problem that I am having with my computer. I have been searching all over the internet for a solution and nothing so far has worked. The problem is that none of my Windows XP (SP3) system sounds work. If I go into the Control Panel to try and change the sound schemes, the Preview button is grayed out. I also do not get any audio in Realplayer or any web sites that use Flashplayer like Youtube. However Windows Media Player and Winamp both seem to be working fine. This seems to have just started randomly a few days ago. Some people have suggested installing the K-Lite codec pack and using a tool that is included to repair the sound. I have also tried reinstalling my sound card drivers and Flashplayer with no luck. Other people have suggested checking my registry for a missing "wavemapper" key which wasn't the problem either. When I try system restore it goes through the process and then tells me that no changes were made so unfortunately I can't use that.I haven't made any major hardware or software changes recently and I am out of ideas at this point. My motherboard:http://www.giga-byte.com/Products/Motherbo...me=GA-M57SLI-S4Thanks in advance for your help.

I installed the XVid player for Windows XP Home the other day and it hung during installation so I had to restart my computer. All of a sudden I don't have any more system sounds and I can't play .wav or .midi files. I tried doing a system restore, but of course none of my restore points allow me to roll my computer back to that date. Then I tried troubleshooting it through Windows Support...no go. I removed and reinstalled my sound card and drivers (Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live!) and installed all the codecs I could find, still no dice. Here's the kicker...I can play MP3s through WinAmp and video with sound through Windows Media Player, but I can't play .wav files or .midi files. Whenever I go into Sounds and Audio Devices and highlight an event sound, the play button remains dimmed. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this issue short of formatting my HD and reinstalling Windows, I would be very appreciative.

I think there's some features if you go to your battery settings, there should be some kind of table with possibilities with Windows Sounds and stuff like that.
Search for battery, and check it out. I don't remember it completely.

Well my computer had a virus, and thanks to the awesome people on this site I was able to fix it. Prior to that I tried to fix it myself using Malwarebytes. Anyway my computer was clean and everything was running normal. However, after I uninstalled Malwarebytes I tried to play music on Musicmatch Jukebox, and I got the error: Waveout not supported. This was odd because I was able to play music on itunes and Windows Media Player. Then I realized that I also could no longer hear system sounds and that I couldn't hear sound on youtube. I checked my soundcard: Creative Sound Blaster Live, which was working fine. I tried to reinstall Windows Media Player, which didn't help. I installed K-Lite Codec pack, which also didn't help. After I uninstalled K-Lite and went back to my original codec pack, CCCP, it was then that I got a prompt telling me that I was missing some Registry Keys which would affect my computer's sound. I'm wondering if I accidentally deleted something when I uninstalled Malwarebytes. You can view my original topic here, the sound issue is on the second page.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/276614/my-desktop-has-a-green-screen-telling-me-my-system-is-infected/Help to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated ^_^Thanks so much!

recently reinstalled Windows due to upgrading my PC and now whenever a system sound is played (for example the error sound or exclamation sound) all other sounds, whether they be music files or games or anything else, will have their volume significantly reduced, even for a short time after the sound has played. makes it very irritating when, for example, listening to music while editing documents (exclamation sound playing on closing to save) I've already disabled the option in Communications tab of the sound settings but can find nothing else and a google search hasn't helped either

A:windows play system sound and all other sounds go quiet

I would try this: go into the device manager in the system section of the control panel; completely uninstall the sound card and any other associated components; reboot; let windows hopefully re-detect the card and any other components and reinstall them; reboot a second time. Try this out and see if it resolves your issue.

As the title suggests no sound through the laptop speakers or the headphone out. Last Saturday my laptop prompted me to download 2 important Windows updates. One of the two updates was Internet Explorer 10. After installation and restart everything seemed ok. Then I went on the internet and almost immediately I was getting this popup "Ulead MP3 Codec: About" "Ulead MP3 Codec v1.0.18" and then an OK button as the only option. You could proceed no further unless you clicked OK, but once clicked the web page froze. I believe I was trying to read NY Post online at the time. So I started Googling the problem and see that many others have the same most in association with checking either AOL email or some other web based email program and it was associated with sound. The fix recommended for everyone was either to turn off sounds in email, download Windows 7 Codec pack from MS Updates or to put Ulead.com as a blocked site on IE. I tried the latter two as I do not us web based email, rather I use MS Outlook. ... Read more

I searched online for other Windows 7 sound issues (and there were a lot), checked my system against the majority of the major issues, and the problems that others were experiencing (hardware compatibility issues/device manger setup and such) was not something I was experiencing.

I went so far as to reinstall Windows on a drive partition, and when I boot up using that OS I have sweet, glorious sound. So I figure that I have somehow borked something on my primary OS, that doesn't exist on the small partition.

Try this one ( Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 Pro | H.264 Encoding | VC-1 Codec | Streaming Silverlight Video | IIS Smooth Streaming | Real Time Encoder | Microsoft® Expression® ). The free version does, however, have a 10 minute recording limit. If you need more time for the recordings, you'll need to buy the Pro edition ($199). But I would first try it out and check whether it does what you need.

About a month and a half ago, I was fiddling with my laptop (an IBM ThinkPad T23 with Windows 2000 Professional) and I deleted the SuperSavage and Utilities, not realizing it was vital for my resolution. I tried reformatting and all that jazz, but no luck. I just got the driver onto a CD-R from my other computer and installed it into my laptop. My laptop resolution is perfect and back to normal. However, the laptop's audio isn't working. I can hear the error sound when I play Freecell (haha) but I can't hear an audio CD. I tried turning the volume up and that works with the error sounds and stuff, but not audio. Also, the little thing that showed the volume increasing when it's turned up isn't showing, but it is working. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help.

I just removed and recovered from a virus a few days ago that disabled my Antivirus and anti-spyware programs. Everything is back to normal except for my system audio. I believe my computer was infected with the Trojan.W32.Beagle virus and perhaps one or two others as well. I have managed to rid myself of them, but several sound issues have cropped up in their wake. NOT ONE of these problems was around before I got the virus. They have ALL occurred since I removed the virus using various programs recommended by tech people online. I did actually have sound while I had the virus, so my suspicion is that one of the programs designed to remove the viruses removed something else that it shouldn't have. Here is a list of the problems I am currently having:

Hi, recently my dad's laptop has gotten even worse. It's gradually been destroying itself after he finished paying for it but now the sound's gone nuts. It plays system sounds and he can play things in Windows Media Player and hear it but when you double click the volume icon it says there's no audio devices.

One thing that comes to mind is drivers but i don't have access to his pc that often and he still thinks i don't know what i'm doing so i'll break it even more, even though i've proven myself enough times

I've checked device manager and there's no conflicts in the sound and multimedia etc group and it says the device is working ok.

If anyone knows how to fix this problem then any help would be much appreciated.

A:Laptop recognises no sound devices but plays system sounds and wmp

Hi Dave

Dads are pretty mean people aren't they ? there you are offering your services and the miserable old git thinks your gonna break it...

Thing is, is it working enough for your Dad ?, if so i'd just leave it be until it finally gets to the point where it needs fixing.

If however you do manage to get your hands on it, then I'd just remove all the sound related items in Device Manager, then reboot and let then reinstall, this usually clears things like this up, you will need the driver disk (maybe) so make sure you have it before doing anything.

Hello all,

I have a Toshiba laptop, for about 2 years now. I would like by describing the pc specs, but i'm having a hard time since i can't open My Computer to see the details, but it goes more or less as follows:

Windows 7 Home Edition, i7, decent graphics card, 4gb ram.

My pc never broke down on me or anything, but now, i think it was after i installed a driver for the touchpad, everything stopped working.. I can't reproduce any type of sound (browser, mp3 files, videos, etc) I can only hear the starting windows sound. Can't open My Computer as stated before, can't open my screen resolution screen as well.. I've tried repairing the disk, scanning for viruses, editing some things on regedit, but nothing has worked so far..

If someone could be so kind to point me in the right direction i'd greatly appreciate. My native language is not english so sorry for any mistake.

A:Toshiba Laptop - Can only hear system sounds, can't open MyComputer etc

Where did you download the touchpad driver from? Have you tried System Restore to the restore point prior to installing the touchpad drivers? What have you edited in the registry? Have you ever used any registry cleaners in the past?

Also download Speccy install it this will tell you all the specs about your computer hardware which we will need. When Speccy is open go to file then click on Publish snap shot or screen shot then post the link here.

I am facing problems with my laptop. A couple of weeks ago my google, bing and other search results started to redirect me to other sites. Audio ad also start playing in the background and this has happened since the virus infection. After googling about this type of infection, i found out that its called google redirect virus and used some of removal softwares and guides as posted on different websites. I have tried, MBAM,Sybot, Spyware doctor, Norton with no help from any of them. The redirect keeps happening again and again. Somewhere i also reas that TDSSkiller from Kaspersky labs would help me. I downloaded it and tried to run it, but it does not install/run. I tried renaming and running it with no luck with the same. I have tried everything possible thing i could but none of it has helped me. Please help me with this infection.

Another thing i would like to mention is i have noticed my laptop overheating since this virus outbreak. I never had overheating problems before, however now my laptop fan runs at high speed (as if it would if i am running a cd or playing a high graphics game). Sometimes overheating causes a shutdown. Just prior to this infection i was infected with windows restore virus which i got rid off using MBAM program. I hope my writing is clear( I am not that big of a computer person). Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance.

Ive had a Dell Inspiron E1505 for about 4 years now.

-Windows XP Home SP3
-Genuine Intel CPU T2400 @ 1.83 ghz - x2 (Centrino Duo)
-1 GB of RAM

I've never had any problems with my cd drive until today when I was ripping a burnt cd. When the cd had 3 songs left to rip it stopped and wouldn't rip no more (the cd was pretty scratched), so I tried to rip just the last 3 songs ( 3 attempts, 1 for each song) with no luck. I ejected the disc and put in a different one (non burnt) and the audio was jumpy and skipping. I tried other cds since then and they all have jumpy and skipping audio, I tried a dvd and the audio was the same way (the video was affected a little if any at all).

Although, I have a video game already installed on my computer (which takes the game disc to play), and I put in the game disc and the audio was just fine, it loaded up and I played it for minute.
I CAN play audio from the harddrive and the internet and it sounds just fine.
I CAN still rip cds with windows media player, and when I play them back it sounds just fine.
I have nottried to burn anything yet.

ALSO, the light on my cd drive's door flashes (maybe insync with the skipping audio, kinda seems like it).

I read a similiar thread on here(but different!) and someone said to look in device manager under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers", then go to it's properties, then go to advanced tab and change it to DMA, bu... Read more

I have been trying to look around for a solution however none of them work. On my playback section it says "no audio devices are installed" and i can't change the volume or even get access to the little bar you use to change it. If it helps my computer was recently fixed up and i was thinking that they may have forgotten to reconnect the speaker but that wouldn't explain why headphones don't play any audio either.
Any help is appreciated

A:My dell inspiron 7559 laptop will not play any audio through headphones or speakers

Check for  any settings in he Bios.  You might be able to turn audio and microphone on or off there.
If the audio is not listed in Device Manager, in some form, the boot may not be picking it up.  The Realtek audio or at least High Definition audio device should show up.  If you have a device which shows as unknown, that might be it but missing a driver.

I've got a weird one: I hooked the HDMI from the PC to the television and get great picture, but the sound is weird. I get system "dings" and whatnot, but I don't get the audio from games or YouTube videos. I've already tried setting the default audio device to the HDMI port, but I get sound from the speakers on the PC, not via HDMI.

The video card is an EVGA 750 Ti SC, running on a Biostar HiFi A85W.

A:Get system sounds, but NO YouTube or game sounds. Help?

If you have the Default Audio Playback Device set as HDMI then you should be getting sound only from HDMI. Sounds like that is not happening.

You should have the NVDIA High Definition Audio and the regular PC audio (whatever that is) shown in the Device Manager, Sounds section. If you do not have NVIDIA High Defintion Audio, or only the generic Windows installed "high Definition audio driver (codec) shown for the HDMI audio that could be the problem.

Uninstall the Video Card, in the Device Manager (do not uninstall the drivers) then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the Video Card. See if this corrects the problem. If not, install or reinstall the latest NVIDIA driver.

I am using the trial version of Audio Mid Recorder and when i record anything from like lets say, youtube or even from a radio station it comes out sounding very thin, as if it was recorded from a pair of head phones. All audio devices seem to be in working order.
ok, I just found out why it's sounding thin is because it was recording through the mic head set. Now I disabled the headset but still on the recorder the source device on the drop down option for recording device it is not listed.

A:Audio Mid Recorder audio sounds thin and fraily

I thought that this was disable to plug the analog hole, so that people could not record what they are hearing from their sound card...basically going around copy protection.

I think they started it with Vista, I could be wrong.

Here is some more info on it:

Hi, i got a problem with my new laptop its an HP mini 110-1020La, i've installed some games like age of empires 2, age of mytholgy and dawn of war but i cant play them, when i start a game an error message pops up "could not initialize graphics system. Make sure that your video card and driver are compatible withDirectDraw" or "Failed to initialize video card" what should i do?

A:Can't play games on my new laptop (could not initializa graphic system)

My initial thought would be that your graphics card (Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950) just doesn't support something the games require, this can be a fairly common problem with laptops.

The requirements for Dawn of War would support this as a requirement Hardware Transform and Lighting (T&L) which the GMA 950 does not have. It does support T&L but through software, not hardware.

This shouldn't cause a problem with Age of Empires 2 or Age of Mythology I don't think as I am not aware of any particularly difficult requirements for those.

If this is the cause of the problem there isn't really anything you can do apart from getting a new laptop with a graphics card that supports those requirements (they can't be changed in most laptops). I can not say for sure that is the cause though!

I installed the latest build 7100 and it won't let me play my music. I get a popup window with the message:

Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct.

I tried taking ownership of the directory, but still no go.
What am I doing wrong??

- Playing the same file directly from my PC (no IE).
- Get sound OK from this webpage using another PC.
- Get sound OK playing YouTube vids

- Browser Setting - Playing sound from webpages is enabled.
- Volume: All volumes up; no volumes muted.

Over the past couple of days, my kids have been saying that they hear sounds starting to play out of nowhere. I've checked active programs and processes, the only thing that is suspect is an item in start-up: c:\progamfiles\commonfiles\alg.exe ... I've ran MalwareBytes, removed the items it suggested, uninstalled the torrent and p2p program the kids were using, and performed the log scans as outlined. Here they are. Any help would be appreciated...

I've got the RC beta of W7 installed on the 5th.
My motherboard is an Asus P5Q-E with Soundmaxx audio.
I plug my headphones into the front audio jack and it is NOT seen by W7.
I move the plug to the rear jack and it is not recognized.
Go to Sound control panel and the headphones are listed as the default device but it is greyed out and can't be used.
When I look at the volume settings for the system I see the green bars moving. There is sound in there somewhere but I can't access it.
The headphones work.
The front jack works.
According to W7 my drivers are OK.
I do not have enough knowledge to know where to look next.
Hope somebody can help me fix this.

A:W7 does not play any sounds. Need help.

Hello Halfbaked,

First of all, have you the latest Vista driver for your chipset ? You can find it here : http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mis...10_Vista_n.rar

Then I heard of that problem, it seems that your headphones are the default device whereas you should have the speakers as a default, try to install the driver i linked in order to see if it can solve that problem.

Good luck !

Try to use that web site with the Mizilla firefox , it working , then its a case with internet explorer , for that sake , open the internet explorer Tools > internet options > advaced . and click on the reset. it will solve your issue .
But if that is not playing then its a case of device drivers . on the computer .
