How to find compatible laptop harddrive / harddisk?

Q: How to find compatible laptop harddrive / harddisk?

The harddrive on my other laptop just died (it's an HP Pavilion ZE4300). This was the first time a harddrive gave up on me, so I was quite shocked by the whole process... never thought it'd happen to me. Fortunately, I periodically back up all my data to an external drive.

Now, because the laptop is otherwise perfectly fine, I just want to replace the drive. I pulled the current one out, and it's a Toshiba harddrive with the number MK4021GAS, .

I googled this info, and I got links to new and used harddrives for sale with the same config (40gb, ATA).

However, I thought I'd shop around and look for something cheaper, and possibly with more capacity. Any thoughts on how I can search for compatible harddrives? E.g., how can I figure out if a certain Maxtor harddrive would work on this laptop.

Also, if you have suggestions on where to buy a replacement HD for a laptop, do list them.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Preferred Solution: How to find compatible laptop harddrive / harddisk?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My best advice would be to contact HP.
If you go over what was installed there might be a bios limitation for large drive support.
Basicly it might not see the full drive

I'm trying to play minecraft and other games but they don't load or display correctly.

Computer: Sony Vaio VGN-CR31Z

All the drivers I download aren't compatible.

Before Win 8 everything worked fine with Intel Centrino.
But Windows Basic Display Adapter is horrible and the only compatible.
Does anyone have any drivers that would work? Everything I've downloaded is not compatible.
Even the Sony Europe website doesn't have the correct drivers, it just makes my resolution weird.
Also my PC needs a driver with OpenGL.. for MC.

Thanks :'D

According to my quick Google search, your laptop has the ATi Radeon X2300 graphics card. There are some threads in this forum section about legacy drivers that MIGHT work with this card. You should check them out.

I have a Compaq Presario 1200XL106 laptop with the slimline type 5 GB hard drive (Compaq part #169609-001). I want to replace the hard drive. From ads on ebay I found that at least one of the IBM Travelstar drives (IBM model DARA206000, also 5GB) will work. I'd like to move up to a larger drive. So,

1. Is there a place I can find a cross-reference list that will tell me what drives will be compatible with my computer?

2. What determines whether a drive -- say a Hitachi XXX-XXX -- will be compatible? (I realize size is one factor - it has to be the 9.5mm x 2.5in like mine is; and, of course voltage) But what else must I look at?

My Dell Vostro 1400 Laptop recently quit working. Its only 4 months old.
I turned it on and it came to a screen saying,

"Windows dould not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

I inserted the setup disc and booted from it, when I got the the Repair option it says,"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue."

So I took the computer down to the local computer store and they put in a new 130 GB harddrive, ran the setup disk again and it displayed the same missing HDD message.

Anyone have any Ideas of what could be wrong???
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I want to know if it's Sata 6Gbps is compatible with my motherboard(Pegatron ECS RC410-M).

My current harddrive is Western Digital Caviar SE WD2500JS 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5"

Thanks in advance,

A:Is my new harddrive compatible?

Maybe, some older boards such as yours with the ATI Xpress 200 chipset have trouble working with SATA 3 and 6Gbs drives. You may have to use a jumper to limit the drive down to SATA 1.5Gbs mode as described here: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/search/1/a_id/1337/c/130/p/227,295
Only do that IF the motherboard does not recognize the drive at all or if it takes a really long time detecting it.

Greetings All,

I am looking for a Harddrive and backup/syncing software that will work with Windows Vista x64.

My previous setup was Vista x32 using a 320gb Seagate FreeAgent Go External usb HD and the included Seagate Manager software to sync specific folders whenever the drive is connected. On my new system (x64), the software is not compatible

FreeAgent Desktop Software | Seagate

I am still able to connect and use the Drive, but the auto-sync capabilities offered by the software are no longer available. Thus, I would need to manually backup each new file, which is a major inconvenience.

Does anyone have suggestions on a HD and software(most importantly) that works with Vista x64? I am looking for a 500gb - 1.5tb External usb 2.0 hd.

All replies, thanks in advance..

Hello all,

I need some advice.

I recently replaced my old harddisk to a new harddisk. The old harddisk has windows xp home and other programs installed.

I did not format the old harddisk, I only took out the old harddisk and replaced it with a new harddisk. I then installed windows xp home to the new harddisk.

While I am installing programs on the new harddisk, I discovered that one of the programs do not allow me to activate the program license because I have previously activated the program on my old windows. I need to do a proper uninstallation to release the license, then I can activate the license of the program in the new harddisk.

My question is, can I take out my current new harddisk, replace it with the old harddisk, boot up as normal into the old harddisk windows, uninstall the program inside the old harddisk, then replace the old hardisk with my new harddisk again.

Will I be able to access the old windows on the old harddisk?
Will it mess up my current windows/programs settings?
Will my current new harddisk windows be able to work as normal after accessing the old harddisk windows?
I thought of accessing the old harddisk as a slave, but I do not know if it is possible to access the old harddisk and do a proper uninstall of the program?
Is there any better way of uninstalling the program on my old harddisk?

Thanks in advance.

A:Accessing Win XP on old harddisk to uninstall programs after installing new harddisk

I have an Acer Aspire 5103 laptop running Windows vista. The laptop was never dropped or was subjected to any physical abuse. Off late it started to reboot all of a sudden and it will not find its hard disk.

I removed the harddisk (let us call H1) (SATA) from it and swapped it on a HP Laptop (having a hard disk H2) which took a similar form factor hard disk. The HP machine was happy enough to recognise this hard disk (H1) and continue to work with out any problems.

I took Hard disk H2 and fitted it on the Acer Laptop . Even after this the Acer reboots and doesn't find its hard disk now and then. i.e if you leave the laptop switched off and stationary for 2 hours - when you boot, the laptop will find its hard disk.

So I deduced it is a problem with the Acer Laptop rather than the hard disk.

If you move the acer laptop or do something to its physical position (this also depends some times it doesn't matter even if you move it keeps working) the Acer stops recognising the hard disk (irrespective of which ever hard disks) - The BIOS itself doesn't show the Hard disk.

However after 2 hours or something similar (after poweing off the laptop) - the laptop finds its hard disk and boots. Once booted if you don't move it - it keeps working as long as you want or when it stops finding the hard disk due to some minor movement. If you reboot the machine however many times it won't find the hard disk once it starts to miss its hard disk - but after 1 or 2... Read more

I replaced the hard drive in my dell 8400 with one listed as compatible on the dell web sight. A Caviar blue 500 GB SATA 3gb HD 16 MB 7200 rpm 3.5. its twice the hard drive that was in it. fit in just fine. started teh computer. dell logo appeared, put in OS disk. restarted pressing f 12. choose the boot from cd and windows started. got to the screen that said install, repair or quit. I choose install, then it came up with.. cant find hard drive. and canceled. So from the f 12 screen i chose diagnose hard drive. It did, found the new hard drive came up with passed. I looked in set up under f 1. the correct new hard drive was listed. . thought maybe bios needed updating to run this new hard drive. istuck in a floppy i had with an bios flash on it. chose f - 12 again but picked start from floppy. it did. then it said it cant install it because it was for a dimension 4300 not the 8400. so i went back to dell sight. downloaded to my 4300 the update to go to a A09 (it is currently A03) put that on floppy. put the floppy in the 8400 started boot from floppy and it said .. remove media disk and try again. Im guessing the file is zipped? Any suggestions to getting this computer to use the new hard drive?

My Toshiba laptop as been doing something strange lately... Sometimes when I turn it on after a hard reset it sits at the Toshiba splash screen (the screen where is says you can press F12 for boot options or F2 for setup)...

The first time it happened it wouldn't boot until I held the power button down for 10 seconds after removing all power including the battery.

Last night even that wouldn't work. So I yanked the hard drive and tried to boot again and finally got the "we can't find an operating system" message after it tried to boot via the network... Then when I popped the hard drive back in it booted perfectly the first time.

I'm wondering if my hard drive is about to fail or it this indicative of something else?

Any advice or insights would be appreciated!

I've got a new computer with 256 MB DDR ram. The computer is Athlon XP 2000. Windows XP Home.

I plan on upgrading ram to 512 mb. I have been given, by someone who knows even less about computers than I do, a RAM (chip?) that apparently has never been used.

A tag stuck on this chip says "PC2100 DDR". There are also some numbers which may be serial #'s or part #'s.

I'm wondering if there's any way, aside from installing, to tell if this chip will get along with my motherboard and my ram.

A:How do I find out if RAM is compatible

Pretty much, it should work.........but sometimes certain chips don't work with certain chips, so installing it is pretty much the only way to find out.

Hi guys, I've been reading this forum for some help but cannot seem to find anything as my problem (or multiple problems) seems to be quite specific.

The problem:
During the creation of a 30GB FAT32 partition on my brand new IOMEGA 1.5tb desktop external harddrive the power cable was unwittingly disconnected and the partition failed. Since that time I have been unable to find the harddrive on my system.

What I've tried so far:
I've tried searching 'My Computer', 'Disk Management', and 'Device Manager', none of them are showing up anything ( they were showing the device perfectly before the incident ). I have also attempted to use the harddrive on a laptop of mine but to no avail. I've attempted to find out if UPnP is enabled on my Bios menu but for some reason this menu keeps softlocking/hardlocking and I must manually restarted the computer. I have also shut down all power to the computer for about an hour and the problem persists.

Any help would be most appreciated.

hi - after reading for a couple hours, i'm still not able to find my answer. i have a 80G drive w 4 partitions that no longer boots. is this problem a prelude to complete disk failure? or can i use this (if not fixable) for data storage? since this drive will post normal/quick when its a slave, does someone know what's missing/messed up to cause the long post when master, and anything to do about it?

You need to say whether you are new to computers or not and which Windows operating system you have. I remember when we first got a computer many years ago the wife thought that I'd deleted her work. In fact we didn't know whereabouts it was saved and couldn't find our way around. If you are a beginner using Windows 7 try clicking on the Start button and then Documents in the menu that opens to the right. By default that's where things are saved but you can use the Save As option and choose a different location.

My laptop is only 3 years old so I don't understand why I am having so much trouble finding out a compatible adapter for it. The charger I've been using for the past 3 years has the following specifications:120WInput: 100-240V ~ 50-60Hz 2.0AOutput: 19.5V  6.15A I have no idea what those figures mean, so if someone could reccommend a safe and suitable replacement charger while I nurse my electrocuted thumb I'd be very grateful!

Hi I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on why my computer isn't finding my harddrive when I boot up. What happens is it'll start up then after searching for a hard-drive for a couple seconds it'll bring up an error stating that it's unable to find one and to insert boot disk.

I've checked to make sure the hd is hooked up to the motherboard and it is, but for some reason it's not getting any power. I have tried plugging in other hard-drives and the same problem occurs, so I have ruled out it being the hd itself. Could this be a faulty motherboard? I don't think it's the power supply because the only thing not getting power is the hard-drive from what I can see.

Any insight you guys might have would be great thanks!'

Unfortunately I cannot remember exactly what motherboard I own, other than it is a Asus AGP motherboard (about 3 years old).

I'm at my wits end here, I've formatted one of our computers, a process I've done tons of times on various PC's but this one is giving me hell.
Everytime I install from the bootable CD, it just refuses to accept that I have a harddrive. The harddrive is Seagate 60Gb IDE, not SCSI, SATA or requires RAID drivers.
I've tried reformatting with FAT32, NTSC, or leaving it unformatted, and the damn disk refuses to believe I have a harddrive. I've tried switching from Primary Master to Cable Select.
I can access and use the disc just fine in DOS mode, partitionmagic does everything asked of it to the harddrive. Its only the windows cd that doesn't see the drive.
I've tried other harddrives as well(had a spare working tiny 3.2Gb drive lying about) and the same problem with them as well. I've also tried switching the harddrive cable with a different one.

System Specs

AMD Athlon XP 1500
MSI Socket A 462 Duron/Athlon Motherboard MS-6378
1x Harddrive (60Gb Seagate)
1x Combo Drive(DVD-ROM/CD-RW)

This is driving me nuts.

Hello all....this is my 1st post but I always get good info just by browsing the boards!

I am trying to use my Windows XP Prof. CD to reformat and reinstall windows on my computer. I put the CD in, reboot my computer, and choose the option to boot from CD-ROM 1st. So far this works fine. I enter the windows setup where it loads all the normal setup stuff. Then it gives me the options of installing windows and tells me to hit ENTER.

PROBLEM is, when I do this, it tells me setup cannot find a hard drive on my computer and it would reboot in 15 seconds. I dont understand whats going on since there obviously is a hard drive!!

Can anyone offer help or suggestions?

Some suggestions!
Go into the BIOS see if it is set to auto to aquire the drives, make sure the system is recognizing the HD. If not check all your connections, I once flipped the cable on an IDE that caused what you have. SATA plug in differently doing away with that. If you do have IDE and have the HD & CD on the same cable it may be seeing the CD as master. Check jumpers on both drives, most of the it is something simple that is over looked that drive you crazy.

i am trying to repair a Pc for a mate of mine and bought him a new motherboard...it was from a tech market and is a EMachines OEM board, it came with a 1.3GhZ processor fitted with it. now onto the problem:

the motherboard can find all of the drives (CD,DVD, Floppy) as slaves or primary drives. on either the master or secondary channels. the HD is found occasionally if i do a MB reset ( it think its a MB reset, its in the settings of the BIOS anyways

what could be up with it?? the HD is just taken from the original machine (which was a EMachines aswell) but is formatted with a XP disk. as i thought that might fix it, i tried re-installing windows but then it wont boot from the HD after

what could be wrong?? is there some sort of setting wrong??

Any help would be much appreciated!!

I also have another post about lap tops, and thats why I'm trying to find a harddrive, because in the Asus G2SG-A1 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220284&Tpk=g2sg-a1), It only has a 5400rpm harddrive, and I want a 7200rpm. A:Where can I find a lap top harddrive that meets these specs...

If you are sure that the notebook drive is SATA and not PATA, you could try either one of the 7200 drives. They may not be compatible with the motherboard's bios. Sometimes you cannot interchange 5400 drives with 7200 drives. There may also be a maximum capacity spec too. With Windows Vista, you may be ok on these specs

i want to upgrade my harddrive hp2000 notebook  it now has 3.0 gb. just somewhat larger.my hp product # is.  qe343ua#aba   what will work  what will fit ?

A:find harddrive upgrade forqe343ua

2000-358NR is the model and here are the specs: specs It has a 320 gig 5400 rpm hard drive. I strongly recommend a 7200 rpm hard drive, at least.  http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Momentus-7200RPM-Internal-ST9500420AS-Bare/dp/B001R4BBLU/ref=sr_1_3?ie...  Here is the Manual: Service Manual See p. 46 for hard drive replacement. You might want to consider a solid state drive but the expense may not be justified. Yours is not a laptop that is likely to be useful for a long time in the future. The power of the processor is pretty limited. Post back if you need more help.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Notebook model: Compaq presario c300 laptop
Processor type: Intel Celeron M CPU 420
Processor Speed 1.60GHz
Total Memory 768 mb
video memory 128mb(Xp only)
BIOS version F.24
I formatted with Win.XP recently but when downloading the suggested BIOS from the Compaq website the PC shut down and ever since I've had looping boots after a blue screen saying my hard device is screwed up. So I burned a boot disk with Darick's nuke, and completely wiped out the hard to install the Windows again, and it still says this and I just get a retarded laptop only with an opening Compaq screen then blacking out, booting, then coming back to this screen whenever a window installation is booted after i press enter to install:

Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any harddisk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuraion ins correct. set up cannot continue, to quick press f3.
If I press R to repair it still said that the path or file specified is not valid, and it lets me type from C:/). How can I revive the damaged hard that supposedbly not pwered on, found or connected properly?
This is the BIOS that i tried to install soon after I first formatted then booted the computer into retarded mode: WinFlash for HP Notebook System BIOS (for Notebooks with Intel Processors) - Microsoft Windows/Vista-Based
