Q: My E drive is giving me problems. take a minute to read.

Hey, my E Drive which is a DVD re-writer wont read DVDs at all. It reads cd roms fine. Anyone have any suggestions???

thx 4 taking sum time to read this

EDIT: ive tried the troubleshoot. it comes up with nothing. it doesnt play dvds or dvd-roms. When i try opening the files it comes up as empty

Preferred Solution: My E drive is giving me problems. take a minute to read.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

In device manager uninstall the IDE channel that the DVD is on then reboot. windows will automatically reinstall the IDE channel and the drive on boot up.

I have a Sandisk Cruzer Mini 256 MB flash drive. It was working before, but now, when it is connected to a PC, the PC can detect the USB device, but I read a try to read it, I usually get a "Please insert a disk into drive..." error. However, when I reboot the PC with the flash drive inserted, and then try to read the drive, I can actually see the data for about one minute, but then the drive becomes unreadable again, and I start getting the "please insert a disk into drive..." error. I tried to copy the data out to my hard drive after rebooting, but the flash drive doesn't seem to stay readable long enough. I was thinking of trying to reformat the drive, except the data seems to be there.

I have tried the flash drive in several PCs and on both XP and 98, and I have reinstalled the driver, but it makes no difference.

Any advice would be most welcome.

A:Can only read USB flash drive for one minute

If you still have a warranty for it, try sending it in to Sandisk. It sounds like something may be wrong with the device internally.

I have just installed a new hard drive and it is detected on the BIOS but...

When I go to select it in My Computer, it either stops the PC responding or asks me to format it. I go to format the drive and it tells me it could not complete. I've just run chkdisk and...

I am running XP home. It seems to take a very long time to startup as well, a VERY long time in comparison to before.

Does anyone know what the problem could be or a way to fix it?

Thanks in advance

I apologize for the brief title and for this being in the wrong category if it is.

I recently purchased an 8 bay external hard drive tower (similar to a Drobo). I have 4 external drives I removed from their enclosures and installed in the tower. When I installed 4 of the hard drives my computer only recognized two of them.

I went into my disk management and assigned a drive letter to the 2 drives it did not recognize. When given the option to format them, I chose "no" because they contained data.

Windows now sees the devices with a drive letter, but each time I double click on that drive it tell me I need to format it before use. If I do so, I will loose the existing data.

I have downloaded a trial of a data recovery software and it sees the data that is on the disk (don't ask me how).

How do I get the data off the drive without formatting the disk?

Please help. This is my life's work.

Thank you.

Ok- this problem wouldn't be half as complicated if my boss weren't so sure he knew everything about computers.

Computer: Gateway (whatever), about 4 years old, its a non-computer literate employee's machine.
Original Problem- at random power ups, a "Disk Read Error" occured, ctrl+alt+del to restart. Sometimes it would rack up around 5 of these on a screen before it would actually restart into the OS, sometimes it'd go on the first try.

I was trying to research the problem. My boss decided to reinstall WinXP(home) instead. The XP cd is Home, no service packs included.

Starts up fine, install the service packs from windows update (did the automatic type install). Installed all the various office software he needs.
It may have been fine for a couple days, not sure. The computer isn't used much normally.

Now, the same error comes up every time, + some.

"Disk Read Error", sometimes that'll go 2-3 times, sometimes it reboots itself, then it'll get into BIOS, after which it gives the big ol' hardware compatibility screen (I believe) with the options for SafeMode, Last Known Good, etc, sometimes that'll work, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it'll start to load XP and then flashes a bluescreen (1/2 second) and reboots itself.

I however, didn't know this was happening at first. The guy who uses the computer would sit and let it restart itself and restart itself for around 15 minutes. Eventually, it DOES actually get into Wi... Read more

I use a number of flash drives and I intermittently have read/write problems. Sometimes when I copy to one of these drives, the folders are copied, but not the files they contain, or some of the files may be corrupt.
Also after reading data from them (& not writing back) on a few different machines, the data sometimes becomes corrupt.

Is this a general problem with this type of drive, are they not very reliable? Or could it be the types of drive I am using (unbranded). These drives are relatively new, so have not been written to a million times yet, so should work ok.

Hi, I recently purchased a sony vaio 4gb usb drive and have been having problems with it. Every computer that I have tried it on sees it as having 0 storage capacity and RAW file system. I read the sticky and another informative post and tried various things to fix it with no success. The drive doesn't show up in disk management in windows xp. I don't have access to a windows 98 machine. I downloaded the hp format utility and when I try to format the drive it says that "there is no media in the specified device." The drive shows up as a removable storage device in My Computer and when I double click it, it says to please insert media into drive:I. The drive actually seemed to be working on one computer and I was able to put some files on it but now it has the same problem on every computer I try it on.

I even tried to download the linux rescue disc bootable iso image. I followed the directions that were given in another post and when I tried fdisk /dev/sda it said that it was unable to read from the drive.

Is there any chance at all that the drive may not be fried? Any help at all would be great, thanks.

Hello everyone, A few days ago I wanted to copy some files from a DVD to my hard drive, when I heard some very disturbing clunking sounds coming from the computer. I thought it was the DVD, but actually I was able to use that same disc on another computer with no problems, and as it turned out, the sounds were actually coming from my hard drive. Every 20 minutes or so it would make this short sound, like a hiccup or a beep of some sort. At one point I got a blue screen (BSOD), unfortunately I did not write down the error code. After restarting, it went into chkdksk. I let it do its thing but then after each subsequent restart it would ask to chkdsk again. It's only today that I first had a chkdsk-free boot-up. Now my hard drive is not making noises anymore, but if I am to insert a CD/DVD and read from it, the sounds appear again, and I'm not sure whether it's from the DVD-ROM or from the HDD. I tend to think it's the HDD but I don't see why DVD-ROM activity would trigger it. I even took a look under the hood to see if there were any loose IDE or power cables - everything looked fine, both for the HDD and for the DVD-ROM! The problem is, however, that my computer has become very slow ever since all of this started. I can still use it but it is much slower than usual, especially with tasks that require fast dataflow from the HDD. Looking at "Loading" progress bars for example, it seems that the HDD reads in "bursts" r... Read more

hey, my computer generally reads disks, music cd's, dvd's, and games (new like sims 3, and old like theme hospital and shogun total war)

ive just got anno 2070 and put in the disk, but its not recognizing it at all, when i first put the disk in, it whirs, as it knows there is a disk there, and a disk icon appears next to the cursor, but then nothing, no disk appears in My computer, and when i click on the drive it asks me to insert a disk, i have tested the disk on a different computer running vista, anno 2070 runs perfectly, and also says it does run on windows 7, i have also tested other disks since putting the game into the windows 7 computer, which work fine, and checked whether the disk can be read in a virtual machine (windows xp in this case), which it cant as i expected, i have run the Microsoft disk checker and all it said was that the disk was unreadable, but the vista computer proves it is readable.

any tips on what to do next? i really want to get playing this

I would think that your optical drive and that particular brand DVD media don't go together well. ( I have an Imation DVD+R DL that my Samsung drive only reads at times but not most of the time. On four other drives - a Sony, a Liteon, an Asus and a Plextor - the media is recognised and accessible without any problems. The Samsung drive is clean, has the latest firmware, can read and write other DVD media. So where am I? )

You may just try cleaning the lense with a Lense Cleaner CD. If it does not help, try burning anno 2070 to another known-to-be-good brand media at a lower speed.

A:Hard Drive canNOT Be Read, Computer won't boot. Read Error

Hi malpert and welcome to the TechSpot Forum

As a laptop only has the ability to support 1 harddrive your option is to remove the drive from the laptop and connect it to a desktop PC using a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor and try to read the files on it, however I would download the test tools from the makers website and run a thorough test on the drive to ensure readability of the drive.

Remember though if the drive has failed mechanically then any data may be lost and you will need to use one of the professional data recovery services such as "ontrack data recovery" to get it back.

I recently noticed that the system was trying to do 7 updates every day at closedown, and found that update was giving a return code of 800736b3.

I have run SURT several times, and it doesn't seem to give any results (or should I be looking somewhere else?).

I ran sfc /scannow and extracted the results and they are in sfcdetails.txt (attached). SFC said there were some files it couldn't fix, even though sfcdetails.txt says it has fixed all of them.

CBS.zip is much too big to upload using the paperclip - is there another way?

I tried restoring to an earlier restore point, and unfortunately all the attempted updates have flushed my list of restore points - and the oldest few all give me a return code of x00000022.

Not sure if this is one problem or two...! I am reluctant to do a System Recovery as it sounds pretty drastic - help would be much appreciated!

Hi, i have some problem with my IE 7 recently.
When i surf some sites, mostly hotmail. I always get the message "object moved here". So when i click on a page, it will direct me to a page that writes "object moved here" and then i'll need to click on the word "here" before i can access my page.

Recently, i cant seem to see all the images and yes, i can't see all the smilies and icons on the post thread now, which is wierd and i get this message when i'm surfing the net at times:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address

which i find it wierd because my messenger is still able to connect and my brother's computer which uses the same connection is also able to connect but my internet just doesn't seem to be able display the webpage.

hope to hear from you soon.

A:IE 7 giving problems

Hi bearbear,

please try running IE7 without addons to see if the same happens:

- Click Start -> Run -> type:
iexplore -extoff
- Click OK
- Test with a few sites to see it the same problem occurs...please bear in mind that when you run IE with no addons, some website will cease to work as normal if they depend on certain addons. Ignore any new problems, just try to concentrate on the original issue and post back your findings please.

If that doesn't give any results, it may be an idea to temporary disable your firewall for a little bit and run IE in its normal mode. Some firewalls include features which affect how webpages load and are displayed so it could be a configuration problem. Remember to re-enable your firewall when you have finished testing.

Have you previously upgraded from IE6 to version 7? If yes, did these problem used to happen previously?

I have two hard drives in my computer, 1. 500gb for my windows OS and 2. 1tb for my data. I today backup all my data to my terabyte hdd to reload windows. So I have a fresh copy of windows, great. But my second HDD, the terabyte, won't show up. I've tried swapping cables, turning it off for an hour to cool, blah blah. Nothing.

What's interesting is, 50% of the time I boot my computer and go into my bios it will see the terabyte drive. The other 50% it wont. I've gotten windows to see the drive once or twice, but when I try to access the drive, Windows Explorer freezes.

So heres my question. To me, this looks like a physical problem. Now I have a lot of important data on my terabyte drive. Are there any ways to retrieve my data? Even if it means replacing parts on the HDD itself?

A:Hard drive giving out?

Try going in with a live Linux disc. Most mainstream distributions handle NTFS, so if it can be mounted it can read/write the drive. Also, you could be able to do an integrity check to make sure there isn't a physical problem.

I recently read this: How higher RPM hard drives rip you off | George Ou | ZDNet.com

This is what I found after doing a quick google search on Hard Drive RPM when I was customizing a Dell laptop that I was interested in buying....

My question is, is what that guy's saying is true? Or even to a degree? Like would I have any less storage space with a higher RPM than a lower one?

Is there ANY disadvantages to having a higher RPM other than slightly having to pay more?

I saw someone's post on here back from a year ago with a similar problem to what I am having, and you guys helped him so I'm hoping I will have a similar result!

I have noticed that I am losing MB by the minute. I had 15GB of space about 2 weeks ago, and it was reduced to 1GB of space yesterday evening. As of now I only have 223MB. I have transferred everything important on an external drive and deleted everything else. I've tried SpySweeper, Ad-Aware, Spy Doctor, Norton, AVG, and Malwarebites. None of these solved the problem.

If someone could get back to me as soon as possible with any help or advice I would greatly appreciate it, as I use my computer for work, and cannot work at all without enough space!

If it'll run in W2K it should run in XP.

Have you tried using the Program Compatibility Wizard and running it in W2K mode?

If that doesn't work, then it may be a problem with the install of the game. Have you checked the properties of the shortcut to make sure that it actually points at the game's executable file?

Ever since I installed Windows 7 and IE 9 my computer has been giving me fits. Pages and games load extremely slow and I have to refresh constantly. Windows live mail is a nightmare as it takes over 2 minutes to load an email just so that I can delete it. Can I uninstall IE 9 without causing any problems on my computer? And will it revert back to IE 8? I'm thinking that IE 9 is what is giving me such problems and I have heard that it causes a lot of problems with other programs and games. I scan and defrag all the time so I know that isn't my problem with too much junk on the computer. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Windows 7 and IE 9 giving me problems

Yes, you can uninstall IE9 and you will then have IE8.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Also if you have any programs that may prevent system changes (like Spybot's TeaTimer program, Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, and others), make sure you disable them before doing any of the fixes (or accept the changes for the fix we give you when asked by the programs).

Go to My Computer->Tools (or View)->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders (it's Show all files for Windows 98).
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan

Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner Click Check Now and a "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *

I am beyond the veil of anger with this. I believe something is wrong with my DirectX 11 on Windows 8.1, and I don't know how to fix it. I would go to play certain games, and it would pop up an error message saying "Cannot Set Display Mode" or something similar to that. I get the feeling it's DirectX, as I had recently updated it, but did nothing to interfere. I have spent the last week (literally) trying to fix this, and everything has failed. I understand that DirectX 11 comes with Windows 8 and everything, but when Windows doesn't even realize that it's malfunctioning (DXDiag did not work, nor did the thousands of Runtime Installers I tried), something is definitely wrong. I would appreciate any help at this point. Thanks in advance.

A:DirectX is giving me problems.

Recheck/reinstall or update drivers, a lot of interaction between drivers and DirectX goes in there. Some older games do not like or recognize new DirectX. Try to run them in compatibility mode.

This happens with any site i type in.

so basically im stuck doing a search for a site on msn and clicking the link, or copy/paste the address from Mozilla.

Its not a big deal because i use Mozilla, but i would really like to get this fixed.

Since reformatting my hard drive, I have been unable to get Diskeeper Lite to run once I restart my PC. I have tried removing remnants of it's previous installation but to no avail. (In case you're interested, this is the error message I get when I try to open it:
"Unable to connect to the Diskeeper service in the selected machine. Connecting to the local Diskeeper service.")

No one appears to know how to resolve this problem, so I've resigned myself to the fact that I'm going to have to use another defrag program. Does anyone have a suggestions for a free defrag program I can use please?

Windows XP-SP3I have a gmail account. I installed Picasa from google website. Version is Inadequate options for scanning pictures. There are only two options for Picasa to scan for pictures - My Documents or the entire drive. Is there no way to select a specific partition where the pictures of interest are?2. Every attempt at uploading 4 pictures has failed so far, like this:I select the pictures, they end up at the bottom, I click Share, hourglass appears for a very long time, there is no activity in the router, eventually a message window comes up saying that the upload failed, shows a blue link for error, which says 'post URL not found'. Bottom line: upload fails, so obviously the URL link can't exist.I signed out from Google Account (in the upper right corner) and tried to sign back in, as this is what Help suggests, but I get a blank window to Login, which subsequently says that I'm not connected to the internet which is not correct. TCPview clearly shows and established connection all along. Hmm, maybe it is correct once I logged out.I tried every possible way to Upload, Bulk upload, Share, even Sync, whatever I could find - all with identical results.I'm ready to ditch it and try to find something that allows me to easily drag'n drop out of any directory I please, without all that local scanning, and that allows easy viewing for others to whom I send a link. But I thought I'd ask here first. I didn't find anything in tutorials here. And Google hel... Read more

My other comp was working fine, but there was a spark in the power supply but it was still working for awhile, except I'd have to fight with it to get it to turn on. So I bought a new power supply, much stronger than what it was before, changed all the memory as well.
NOW... it turns on, but the HDD doesn't spin or anything, and when it finishes loading past the bios and all that, all it shows is a black screen that says "boot error, please insert system disk and retry" and when I install my winXP cd, it loads enuff to get to the screen where i can choose to repair or install anew, and when i choose either it says that windows cannot detect a HDD.

What could the problem be ?

A:Second comp is giving me problems too, help !

Hard drive

your hard drive is probably ruined. You could make a reformat disk and see if you can reformat the hard drive to get it to work. But it probably was damaged by the spark. The reformat disk can be found somewhere on the internet.

I noticed a few days ago that my computer, which is 2.6 ghz with 1 GB ram and runs windows XP, was running incredibly slowly. I ran all the virus scans I could get my hands on. Some worm or other was killed, and one of the scans detected a virus called "java-bytever.a". So, I did a search for the files infected with that virus and manually deleted them (since none of my other AV programs were detecting them). But my computer is still very slow, and what's worse, now when my Norton Antivirus runs its bi-daily scan, instead of scanning the usual 100,000 or so files, it's now scanning 2.5 million files!! And the number of files is getting higher.

According to NAV, I have a folder called "recycler" that I can't find on my computer, even with a search. Also, most of these extra hundreds of thousands of files are in:

c:\program files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin

I can't access this folder even through command.com, because I keep getting a "cyclic redundancy check" error message. I can't uninstall Java because when I go into add/remove programs and select Java, it says it's "gathering info" for about 30 minutes, when it times out! And when I try to simply delete the whole folder, I get a prompt telling me that my c: drive isn't formatted and would I like to format it now!!??

I'm at my wit's end! I've tried Norton, Panda, Trent, and Bitprotector, and none of them are detecting any problems.... Read more
