No Error but struggling to install SP1

Q: No Error but struggling to install SP1

Hi all, first post here!

I have recently bought a new quad PC and installed Vista Ultimate x64 on it. It installed fine, I activated it and started to get the updates through, after a few hours they were all installed successfully.

However, last night the Vista SP1 update appeared and I am a bit stuck! It says it is downloading but just stays on 0% for HOURS! Then, all of a sudden last night it climbled to 94%, stopped and I got an error from Windows saying the update has stopped working. I ran it again over night and got up this morning and it looked like it had finally downloaded as it was in the install process, asking me to press Next etc. I left it running but when I returned it said it had failed.

Now when I try to run it again, it seems to be stuck on 0% again. I have tried turning the firewall off but nothing happens.

Any ideas? Can it be downloaded manually and installed from somewhere else? Has anyone else had this problem?

Preferred Solution: No Error but struggling to install SP1

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello Geordie,

Welcome to the forum

Have a look here;
Download details: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone for x64-based Systems (KB936330)

Make sure that you have all the latest drivers and Bios before installing.

I hope this helps.

Hi there,

I've tried a lot of different methods in order to install 3.5. All have failed so far. I'm really hoping that somebody in the know will be able to help me with this.

First of all, I was running 3.5 fine as I could run programs that use it fine previously. This was on Windows 8.1 64bit before. I changed my hardware, specifically the cpu, motherboard and gpu. Reinstalled Windows and then started to reinstall everything else. As soon as I tried to reinstall 3.5, I was greeted by a message saying I wasn't connected to the internet. Error: 0x800F0906.

I thought this was strange so I decided to google it. Turns out that this isn't a common problem and I did actually find some solutions from this message board that worked for some people. More specifically I tried to install it offline via my installation disc using the command line:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All /Limit
Access /Source:g:\sources\sxs

This did not work. I received this after running the command:

Try copying the 'sources\sxs' folder onto your hard drive from the installation disc, change your command in the Admin Command prompt to reflect the new location, and see if it works that way.

And even though MS doesn't provide it, you can also try downloading an installer package from here, which is Windows 8/8.1 compatible:

I am trying to do a dual install of Windows Starter 7 and Linux Mint on my HP Mini 210. It has no CD/DVD drive so I'm using ISOs on USBs. This is a *little* above my skill and knowledge level, but I'm learning a ton as I go. At the moment I have totally wiped the hard drive and have no operating systems. I want to reinstall Windows first, and it launches fine from the USB but I keep getting this same message which is the title of this thread, that it can't find the partition. I've deleted all the partitions, I've done the "clean" thing, I've tried making an active partition through the command line, no go.

I do believe the problem could be having the USB drive in at the time of partitioning, with the BIOS pointing to the USB as the 1st boot option. But I can't figure out how/when to take it out. I tried both solutions below. The first might work but I'm not sure at what point in the process to do it. I did the second as well, but when I restart it does not boot from the active partition, just says "missing operating system".

I've been at this for a week, reading all kind of forums and watching tutorials, but I'm stuck on this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you boot the mini, does it tell you you can press a Fn key to get to the boot menu? If so then DO NOT make the USB the first boot device, leave it as the hard drive. Instead, press the Fn key during boot and select the USB flash drive to start the install. When it then reboots after copying files to the hard drive, it will boot from the hard drive as it should and continue to install from the USB.

At least that's how it has worked for me on other computers.

I now realise a clean install is the way forward but is SP1 an essential? Or can I get by without it?

A:I'm struggling to install SP1 on my windows 7 ultimate 32-bit laptop.

Windows SP1 is not required however it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Some updates will not be possible unless you have SP1 first. There is also a lot of programs that sometimes required SP1. Besides a lot of the updates only help in the later road. There has been many times when a user is experiencing problems and i come to find out his OS is not updated. After the updates are downloaded and completed what do you know, the program is working like it's suppose to be.

It is entirely your choice.

Hello everyone,

I have a Toshiba Satellie P750 (less than a year old) running Windows 7 Home Premium.

I've been struggling to fix my computer for 3 days and have no idea what caused the problem.

Here is the most recent issue:

My computer (finally) gave me the Repair Computer option after pressing F8 (presumably from my DVD-RW).

1. Startup Repair found no problems.
2. Computer still says it contains no restore points.
3. Ran the memory check--no issues found. However, after it was done and I logged in, it came up with a blue screen and a new error code:

STOP: c0000135 The program can't start because %hs is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

I was just trying to restore my computer from my WD Passport, but it doesn't show up as an option when I plug it into the USB port to find a system image from an external drive.

(My Passport did back up a ton of data--I don't have enough know-how to understand if I can use it to restore in this way.)

Please advise me how to proceed! I really appreciate the help.

Previous Issues, Attempted Solutions, and Important Info:

The fan on the Power Supply keeps going on and off. It spins for about 1 second then turns off then turns on. Sometimes the fan spins for more than 1 second and it makes a weird squeaky noise. I haven't cleaned my PC properly in months... I used a hair dryer to blow away the dust but problem is still occurring. Should I open up the PSU and clean it further... or is it time for a new PSU?

A:PSU fan struggling

A ahir dryer probably would not provide the appropriate air pressure to do a good job, I suggest trying to clean it with a can of compressed air. These can be picked up for about $3 at walmart, kMart, just about any store that sells electronics. Alswo a cleaning about every two weeks would be a better scheme. I take 5 computers out to my work shop at least every two weeks for a good dust removal. But then I have a small compressor with an air nozzle and turn the pressure down to about 20 PSI.

I am not sure whether I chose the right forum for this topic, as it's not only one game but morelike all processes are affected. When I am playing any game with like, say, 90 fps, it certainly does not feel like 90 fps like it used to feel before the problem. It feels lots of less, choppy, slow and especially when I use mouse to turn and to look around. This same problem comes with not only this game, but other programs and games aswell. Just a simple task like watching a movie from my computer, usually when the camera moves, it feels like the pc is giving some kind of lag. I must say, I did re-install my windows when I noticed the problem but there was no significant change.... So I deduce it must be a hardware problem. I hope you understand something from my explanation

Oh. And I check the temperature on graphics card. It seems to be ok, around 60 degrees? So it could not be due to overheating I guess.

Could it be that the card is broken? May the monitor be faulty? If, how can I get this confirmed?

For the reference my specs are

Intel Core 2 DUO CPU E8500 @ 3.16 Ghz P5Q Deluxe
ATI RADEON HD 4800-series
Windows 7 32-bit

I am very frustrated by the situation, and any help would be highly appreciated

Run the following and use Clean up button, does issue stop?

Download AdwCleaner by Xplode from here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ and save to your Desktop.
Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator
Click on the Scan button.
AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
When it's done you'll see: Pending: Uncheck any elements you don't want removed.
Now click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for review.
Look over the log especially under Files/Folders for any program you want to save.
If there's a program you want to save, just uncheck it from AdwCleaner.
If you're not sure, post the log for review.
If you're ready to clean it all up.....click the Clean button.
After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[S0].txt) will open automatically.
Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
A copy of that logfile will also be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder.
Items that are deleted are moved to the Quarantine Folder: C:\AdwCleaner\Quarantine
To restore an item that has been deleted (if necessary):
Go to Tools > Quarantine Manager > check what you want restored > now click on Restore.

Hi there,

Struggling to get Certificates to work on Win8 for https login to my NAS.
With https enabled on NAS I keep getting the Red https splash security page on both IE and Chrome.

Followed the instructions to generate/edit the Certificate from the NAS (produces new cert timestamp of Feb 2016).
Instructions in NAS docs say I should import this and allow the manager to automatically choose the appropriate certificate folder.
This I do and it puts the certificate into the "Intermediate Certification Authorities" folder by default.

Contacted the NAS company and they don't know why it won't work, as I have followed their documented instructions.

For now, however, here's what's wrong: I bought a new 80G hard drive (Seagate), and after much cussing and wrangling, finally got XPPro to load. However, my system only recognizes a "C" drive; neither my cd/rom nor my cd burner are showing up as being in my system. I have no partitions (that I know of; I am a novice...ok, rank amateur). How do I get my computer to recognize the other drives? Thanks a million in advance.

A:XP struggling to boot

First off try going to Start -> Run -> msconfig
Then go to the Startup tab and start unchecking programs that you don't want starting when your PC does. Be sure you know what you're unchecking first though. The name and manufacturer can give some clues, or googling them will tell you what they are. Unchecking all of the unwanted/unnecessary programs should vastly improve your boot time.

A:AHH! Struggling to fix a computer

Hello, and welcome to TSF!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download, unzip to your desktop CWShredder and run it, then:

1. Click "Check For Update"

(If an update isn't available, skip to step #4.)

2. Click "Click here to Download the upate".
3. When the new version has been downloaded, click "Save".
4. Click "Fix ... Read more

The BSOD suddenly pops up whenever it wants, and I get it alot. Im not a computer man, so I dont understand what to read, or what to do. But I hope you guys can figure out the problem, or atleast get me closer to a solution. Ill add the minidump file here, and hope for quick response on the problem. Just ask me if you have any questions regarding my computer please. Ill answer as fast as I possibly can.

Background I have been using VS Revo Pro to uninstall a number of unwanted programs, and in the process noticed that saving of neither a registry backup nor a system restore point was happening.

I contacted VS Revo, and it was suggested that the problem could lay with the permissions settings. The picture taken of the relative properties seems to show that full permissions are granted. Am I perhaps wrong?

The advice about permissions in the Windows 7 system really confuses me, when it talks of objects in editing permissions too. I cannot grasp what the objects wold be in a case like mine, if indeed they are relevant.

I should. please, ask for as much help as I can get on this confusing matter.

Ok here is the situation.

I noticed yesterday on my WD Green drive some data was slow to read e.g. excessive time to start playing video file, and at same time was read errors logged in SMART so decided to order 2 new drives and move the data.

Today I got the drives, swapped some cables round as one of my red's I realised was on the asmedia controller and I want all my red's on the intel controller, and installed the 2 new WD red drives.

For reference here is the setup

Intel controller

Samsung 850 pro ssd - system drive
WD Black 640 gig
2 Existing WD red 3TB
2 New WD red 3TB

Asmedia controller
WD green 2TB

Out of case temporarily due to lack of SATA ports
Samsung 750gig

Now today something unexpected happens, I am sorting out the data that will be going to the new redundant setup and suddenly I notice when trying to play a video stored on the hdd the hdd light is on all the time and the video isnt loading, task manager reports a constant high speed been read (in this case 140megabyte/sec). Explorer gets the not responding status, and killing it stops the i/o. I repeat and same file again same issue. I deleted the file. After checking over some other files same problem again on another file, I discovered tho after leaving it 20 minutes the video did actually start playing. Now some more weirdness, it seems I only have to highlight the file in explorer for the everlasting i/o, I dont even need to try and load the file, so selecting a bad file is enough for a ... Also run Internet Properties regulary to complete delete IE temp Internet files.

Did have a serious virus that took some work to get out of my machine, but I'm afraid it left something behind, and am at my wits end to find it / clean it. Want to have the HJT log looked at, and maybe the answer here is to re-install windows XP. I dunno... just gettting unbeleivable slowness, with the Performance indicator in Task manager generally spiked at 88% to 100% most of the time.

Wondering if it is worth trying to fix issue, or just re-install (and which method is best?)

Hello, this is my first post to this forum and I thank you so much for taking a moment to read!

I am running Windows 7,
i have an external harddrive that is struggling, as i use it to store my audio files for Pro Tools music production
it is simply very slow as of lately, and i try and back it up in case it completely fails and it takes over night
then when i check, i realize it only backed up maybe a 1/3 of the whole drive because it found an error,
and it seems that the struggling external harddrive turns off or something, because its no longer in My Computer

if you know of a software that will surely pull the files off the drive, that is hopefully free, i;d be much appreciative.
or any help you can offer

once again thank u so much!

A:Backing up a struggling harddrive

No, you have to sit there and babysit the drive (pull files off manually in order of importance) because if its only working for a short time interval due to a hardware issue, no consumer software is going to keep that drive alive while it pulls data off, and in fact your opportunity for pulling data off may be extremely limited so you dont' want to start any automated backup process over and over again without complete success.
You can try a LINUX Live CD distro and see if its better at keeping the drive alive as you're transferring data but if its a heat issue by chance, it would probably take longer to fire up with a Live CD than to get going with 7.
Its also possible that its a problem with the bridge hardware/firmware so swap cables if possible, change ports/computers or if advanced, remove the drive from the external enclosure and hook it up directly to its native form of I/O.

Intel core i7 950 CPU (not overclocked)

ATI Radeon HD 6870 (2 in crossfire)

Yesterday I was able to connect, although it was quite slow, but that may have been due to my internet going slow at the end of last month.

Defrag stopped displaying progress and there was no hdd activity, so I waited and then shut defrag down. Had troubles so rebooted. On restart mouse would not move and keyboard didn't work. So I turned it off again. On restart I kept mouse moving and that stopped it from freezing, but svchost is running 50% and I can't open any programs. If I open exploer I can see the folders but it stops responding if I try to click on one.

In safe mode I looked at the event viewer and the only unique event since the trouble started is to do with cdr4_xp.sys. This is something with roxio so I rid of of everything roxio, including this driver and all registry keys. The problem has not resolved. Safe mode with networking seemed to have the same problems as normal windows.

I believe the defrag crash had something to do with me disabling my wireless during defrag. The popup window stayed open.

Any help would be appreciated. I don't have an external hard drive so I'm hoping for solutions that don't require backup, but beggars can't be choosers.

Sorry for the careless English. I'm on an iPod to write this. Also iPod seems to correct defrag to defray. I missed it in title.

If you can get into Safe Mode try doing a System Restore.Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> System Restore. When this opens make sure that "Restore my computer to an earlier time" is chosen, and click on Next>.The dates appearing in bold are the dates that you can restore to, click on the date that you want and then click Next> to start the System Restore, you may get the message telling you that you will have to restart your computer to start, click ok. When the computer restarts and you have logged on as the administrator a Restoration Complete page will appear, click on OK to complete the process.

I am using Windows XP. I am getting occasional advertisement pop-ups that happen through Windows explorer even though I am a FireFox user. Sometimes these pop-ups happen when I am not doing anything internet related.I've spent a lot of time already on trying to remove them. They started when I let my wife use my account for some internet browsing -- I'll never do that again! I've done virus scans with Trend Micro Internet Security, Spyware Doctor, Malware Bytes Anti-Malware, IO Bit Security 360, Housecall, and AVG -- none of them turned up anything (though my Malware Bytes version is old and I was not able to get updates -- it told me to check my firewall settings and I have not done that yet because I know nothing about firewalls). The one that did turn up something was Spybot Search and Destroy, which found Win32.Sdbot.aad. I think Spybot removed it, but I'm still getting the popups.I also did system restore twice, because other problems starting happening as well -- Windows would not shut down, it just hung. Hi all, new user here. I am running XP Pro and have been struggling with this virus for the past week or so. I have run Malwarebytes several times both as Admin and in safe mode and it found and deleted some trojan/virus. Then I also ran ccleaner. It still really ran slow and had ie redirects. Ran Adaware and cleaned. Still issues. While doing virus scans, I noticed thousands of IE temp files in a users directory I was not familiar with (not a user). I couldn't see that directory in Explorer, even with show hidden files checked. I was able to get to it in dos, so I deleted all the IE temp files there. I still have issues with IE. I ran Process Explorer and found the svchost process that was eating cpu. When drilling down in that process, I was able to see a TCP/IP tab that showed several foreign ip addresses being connected/disconnnected. So I am really paranoid. I have run the HJT log and am awaiting your directions. Thanks in advance..

I'll keep it brief!
I've recently realised that I don't get the 'Run as Admin' option on any program that I right click on.
All I get is 'Run as ...', which when clicked on, opens a Run As box into which I type Administrator ......................... but that does nothing.
I've also discovered that I can't do a 'system restore'.
I opened up a thread in your Windows XP forum (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/596139/i-cant-run-as-admin-or-do-a-system-restore/) and have now been advised by LOUIS, one of your mods, to start a new thread here.
The reason being that, apart from my initial two problems, I am currently unable to download programmes from the web.
I was having issues with Avast, recently installed as advised, interfering with my emails. I then uninstalled Avast, only to find I couldn't install anything else due to my downloading problems.
I've just installed an AV prog after downloading it from a laptop onto a flash drive and then putting it onto this PC.
When trying to download a prog, a box appears asking me whether I'd like to save the file or cancel. As soon as I click on 'save file' the programme box disappears!
I'm sorry to be a pain, but my problems are increasing at an alarming rate!
Oh, I also get random reboots ....................... and I mean random! None for weeks, then four in one evening!
Please help me if you can.
Thanks in advance,

Part of our strategy to do the right thing for our teenage offspring is to try and limit the amount of time they spend glued to the computer screen playing online games etc. We've tried parental management functions in our router to put time limits on IP leases but it turns out our isp has disabled those functions in the router. I also want to know how to block access to a certain IP address so they can't log in to the router and find or change the Wi-Fi password. Can somebody give me some pointers at all?

Struggling here how do you backup windows 10? With Acronis 2014 or 2015 or 2016. Do I have to select Winre unnamed partition windows c drive and recovery drive D. Or do I just pic C: Drive and D: drive/recovery drive? Thank you in advance. What is the easiest version to use to backup with Acronis. Things have changed so much from Windows 7!

Hi, good that you are aware of and use disk imaging. Windows is fragile and easily offended. Personally I wouldn't use Acronis TI and haven't for years after it failed to find my SATA drives completely. It's a bloated cumbersome product. Also, some have reported problems with the VSS service.

I use Aomei Backupper (free is fine); straightforward, regularly updated.
Many here recommend Macrium reflect (free) - a mature and modern product.
Both offer differential and incremental imaging.

You need the boot disk for whichever solution you choose, and need to make sure your PC is configured to boot from it.
You also need external storage for your backup- I suggest an absolute minimum of double the amount you intend to back up.
