Solved: Windows Explorer Error/Close when click or right click on MP4 file

Q: Solved: Windows Explorer Error/Close when click or right click on MP4 file

I'd appreciate it if anyone can help solve this problem.

When I left click or right click on an MP4 file, Windows Explorer encounters a problem and needs to close.
Explorer closes and restarts. If the MP4 was left clicked, Real Player will start and play the file. If the MP4 was right clicked, right click menu will open and error window will open immediately after.

The error report shows:
Error signature
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.5512 ModName: quicktime.qts
ModVer: 5.0.2.15 Offset: 002d12b5

This problem started today, after I tried to copy a folder containing MP4 files while viewing one of the MP4 files in the folder. Yeah, I know....I remain my own worst enemy.

Thanks

Jim

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

All of a sudden I am loosing ability to right click. I saw a post about Hkeys and contexts...it started when I was trying to close a window in firefox. It seems to be happening more and more lately. I loose the bar with the red x in the upper left of other programs and I can't close anything sometimes unless I go into task manager. I run spybot search and destroy and can't find any malware. I also have avira free version. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this, afraid to go in and try diff files from hkey because I want to be sure before I tried anything. I have a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6960 and have not had many issues, but did get the screen replaced about 3 months ago. I have windows vista home premium.

Usually problems with right click are due to Explorer Shell Extensions. Unfortunately the way to find the culprit is to use ShellExView to disable each until the symptom disappears. Unless perhaps the problem popped up right after an update. In that case using a Restore Point may fix it.

Hi

I have recently installed SP2 on XP and installed plenty of new spyware progs and AVG anti-virus.

Since installing the service pack I have been unable to right-click on any file in Windows explorer , the window freezes and just disappears.
I usually get a DrWatson debugger window after this happens, I have read up about this and cant get a fix. My scans come back with nothing.
I have removed any s/w I wasnt using
I ran registry cleanup programs

There is one thing I am unable to remove from add/remove programs OR delete from file system and that is a folder called ebates_moemoney_maker. I tried removing it from cmd window but I didnt have the permissions. In add/remove programs window it does not show any properties like size etc and when I click on remove it does nothing. The spyware programs pick it up but never delete it . I am unsure whether this has anything to do with my problem with Windows explorer but would like to get it sorted

Here is my Hijack this scan - can anyone spot anything , any help MUCH appreciated !

Thanks
Steve

I had an F/ drive failure. Got the files recovered and transfered to a backup drive, installed a new F/ drive and as I began re-installing program files, discovered I couldn't use Explorer right-click to copy data files to a different directory.

I tried the NirSof shexview program to disable all context menu items, no joy, even in safe mode. I made a crashdmp file, but don't know how to open or read it. Per other threads, I've uploaded that to skydrive. Could I trouble someone to take a look at it? I'm stuck.

When I right click on a file in Windows Explorer (Vista Ultimate) the hour glass appears and after a while the Explorer window turns grayish. If I minimize it I can continue to work, even activate another Windows Explorer window. But if I attempt to close the grayed window the screen turns blue (Not the "window of death", and there are no error messages) and my desk top is lost. I can three finger salute, raising the task manager which tells me nothing is running, and I have to restart or shut down!

I have a Toshiba Satellite A205, running VIsta Ultimate, 4 GB ram, etc., etc.

I tried to do a search on this Forum but had trouble and could do nothing, so I write this note.

A:Right click on file windows explorer freezes

Hello Pete Diebenow

I think this might be caused by a bad context menu handler. A context menu handler is a shell extension handler that adds commands to an existing context menu (Example: cut, copy, paste, print, Scan with Norton etc).

Download ShellExView and run it.

It will scan the registry for all the shell extensions. Once the scan is over and the list is displayed, you need to spot the context menu handlers. Sort the results using "Type", so that the context menu handlers are displayed together.

General rule here is to disable non-Microsoft context menu handlers *one-by-one* and verify if the problem is solved. If disabling one does not solve the problem, undo the disabled item and disable the next non-Microsoft handler. Do the same until the problem is solved and finally identify the culprit. Scroll right to see the Company Name column in ShellExView.

You can disable them ...they say "one at a time" and see what effect it has on the problem. You can do it a lot quicker by bisecting the list, disabling half of the entries in one fell swoop, rebooting and trying the right click. You just have to narrow it down. Then keep bisecting the list until it is just a few and do these one at a time. The problem is that you have to reboot between tries to get accurate testing of the results of your disabling.

The latest version of ShellExView marks all the non-Microsoft extensions in Pink for easy identification. All other types of shell e... Read more

Windows Explorer as well as other desktop programs failed to respond to a right click from any interface. I was also having printer errors that involved total failure to print. At first, I thought I needed to uninstall all my Epson software and printer, but that resulted in no change. I searched on line and the only idea that made sense to me was the suggestion that this was likely a Context Menu Handler problem. It suggested downloading a Shell File Extensions View (ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows) from NirSoft version 1.8.6.0 which was free. The first download I did not use out of fear so I accessed the Context Menu area via regedit, but saw no way to disable any suspected third party Context Menu Handlers. So, in the end, I swallowed hard and ran the NirSoft application. I was able to see all the shell items in the registry, and sorted them by age, the most recent was a Context Menu Handler from Norton Internet Security occurring during the most recent update. The manager software allowed me to disable just that one handler, and after a restart, File Explorer and everything else behaved normally. So, now I am posting this so it only takes you less than an hour to address this issue, where I spent 4-5 hours on it. I reinstalled the Norton Internet Security and all is still well.

A:Windows 8.1 File Explorer Fails To Open With Right Click

Hello, jimbang22. Welcome to Windows EightForums. Thanks for posting that. That will be a great timesaver for some.

So much for 3rd party software to goof up a system, especially an AV product. No real need to use it on a home computer with 8/8.1 with included Defender. Enterprise systems are a different story.

Got lucky early on in computing with good advice from an IT friend of mine. He told me to watch out for 3rd party maintenance and AV products for most are crap. Through the years watching I can see how true that is.

Again, thanks and welcome.

I am having this problem recently and I am not sure of the solution.
To solve the problem on the fly one has to start task manager, stop the explorer.exe process, start a new task, type in command.com enter explorer.exe into the Dos window and press enter.
This enables one to carry on using the computer.

Ways to prevent:

I have been told and have found what seems to be the solution:
Type run in the search programs and files(bottom right) click run, enter MSCONFIG, go to startup tab and disable programs that may be causing the problem.
I am not sure I have found the problem program causing this yet but I have disabled a couple of startup programs and the right click freeze seems to be happening less now??
Any comments.

I typicalliy save a file I am working on and then just click the "X" in the upper right hand corner to exit a document. Should I forget to save, I generally receive a prompt asking if I want to save the document before exiting.

A friend insists that the proper procedure to exit a program is to click File then Close to properly close the program. He demonstrated by clicking the "X" to exit the program. When he double clicked the program icon on his desktop, the program opened to the document he was previously working on. (This doesn't happen with all software programs)His argument? "See it isn't really closed, if someone were to hack my computer via a wireless connection, they could see what I am working on so you should always use File, Close." I said "no problem because the wireless connection is encrypted with a password so someone cruisng WiFI's could access the connection anway."

I say the program document is closed when you use the "X" he insists it is still an open document. Anyone care to settle this one?

Does anyone here know of a way to include a "close" function on the right click menu when clicked in the field of a window? Having to mouse to the top or bottom of the page just to close it wastes a lot of time when you are closing hundreds of windows on a busy day. A quick click-click wherever you are on the page would be a godsend. Don't know why MS didn't make it that way to start with.

A:Solved: Windows Explorer crashes or right-click

Right-click crashes are caused by third-party shell extensions.
Effective usage of ShellExView to resolve right-click problems
Download ShellExView (from nirsoft.net) and run it. It will scan the registry for all the shell extensions. Once the scan is over and the list is displayed, you need to spot the context menu handlers. Sort the results using "Type", so that the context menu handlers are displayed together.
The rule is to disable non-Microsoft context menu handlers *one-by-one* and verify if the problem is solved. If disabling one does not solve the problem, undo the disabled item and disable the next non-Microsoft handler. Do the same until the problem is solved and finally identify the culprit. Scroll right to see the Company Name column in ShellExView.

I have a very weird problem: when I try right-clicking on a file in Windows Explorer (or PowerDesk Pro), I get an hourglass, but the right-click menu never comes up and the program freezes (both Explorer and PowerDesk). Actually the very same thing happens if I "select" a file and try to delete the file by pressing the "Delete" key. And the problem occurs when I try to delete a file using the menu (Edit --> Cut). This is really frustrating, to say the least.

Any ideas what might be going on here? I'm running XP with Service Pack 2.

Hi,

I've read a thread about this but the troubleshooting recommended in the thread was specific to the other person's problem. I need your help: whenever I right click on a file inside Windows Explorer, it crashes (explorer.exe). It's not slow or anything, it just exits, the screen goes black for a bit, then goes back to the desktop.

The detailed error message is as follows: Faulting application explorer.exe version 6.0.2900.2180 faulthog module kernel32.dll version 5.1.2600.2180 fault address 0x0001eb33.

I'm running XP Home (SP2) on a fairly new machine. Yesterday when I right clicked a file or folder in Windows Explorer the hourglass would run and I would finally have to End Task to get out of it. I removed the last 2 programs I recently added (Clipboard Buddy & AIM) and now when I right click a file/folder in Windows Explorer the hourglass appears for a about a minute and then the program closes and dumps me back to my desktop.

Any suggestions?

Hello: Whenever I go into Windows Explorer and try to right click to perform an operation of any sort I get an hourglass and nothing ever happens. Also I am unable to navigate to another open program, although the mouse continues to work/move.

I have this problem on a netbook and also a notebook. The netbook runs XP Home, and the Notebook XP 2005 Media Edition SP3.

Help!

A:[SOLVED] Windows Explorer Right Click Freeze

Hi

This is probably caused by 3rd party software that has installed an item on your context menu.

You can download a program called ShellExView which will show the items on the menu.

When you run the program wait awhile for it to discover all the items. The list of items will display.

Sort the list by type (You can do this by clicking on the "Type" heading at the top of the screen)
Go down the list. You are looking for items with the Type = Context Menu.
You now want to disable all 3rd party items where Type = Context Menu and the Company is not Microsoft.
To disable an item right click on the item and select "Disable Selected Items F7" and select "Yes" on the warning screen.
Go through the list one by one testing your right click after every item change.

Hi all,

Newish Windows 7 Starter PC, ran beautifully for the first two weeks. Whenever the user right-clicks on something (like a right-click to copy a file from the hard drive to an FTP site), Windows Explorer is crashing and showing the message below.

Anyone have a notion as to what could be going on here? Don't know if this is related, but AVG AntiVirus is throwing an error as well.

Only thing done so far (I haven't seen the computer myself) is running a chkdsk /f /r to make sure it's not a failing hard drive. No problems reported.

Get AutoHotKey and use this script:

Code:
MButton::
Send !{F4}
Return
Make sure you don't use it when the desktop is active or it may try to log you off.

I must have messed up my setting somehow, because I don't think this has always been the case. In Windows Explorer, if I right-click on a file, all is well. However, if I right-click on a folder, my first option is Search rather than Open, which means that when I double-click on a folder, it opens up a Search window instead of opening up the folder. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Try this:-

Hi guys,

Am new here!!! I have got a problem that has been niggling me for ages! Whenever I double click on a particular drive within my windows explorer to open it - it comes up with the search window AND NOT the drive itself. I have to right click on the drive concerned and then select explore or open, to bypass the search facility. I have noticed that the search option is in bold and at the top of the list, which seems to stipulate that it is the default opition.

My question is how can I changed the "search" opition from being the default opition to making the "explore" opition being the default, so that when I double click on the drive concerned it opens that up and not the "search" window.

I have tried scanning the web to solve this but I cant seem to get any further forward - this is probably so easy to do but I dont know how to do it. Can you please help.

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

My computers at home and work both run Windows 7. Both have "taskbar buttons" set to "combine when the taskbar is full" (so that if, say, I have 3 open pdf files or Word documents, they default to having a separate location on my taskbar, unless there's no room).

My work computer has something though so that if I mouseover (say) one of three open pdf files, or six open Windows explorer folders, on the taskbar, I can "X" something and all three close.

However at home, doing that will cause all open examples of what I'm mousing over (windows opened by the same application) to show up, and I have to individually "X" out of each one.

That's a bad explanation, but I think it's understood. I'm trying to find how to configure Windows to close all windows associated with one application with a single click, and I'm not finding it.

A:How do I close all windows from a single application in one click?

The only way I know of is by using Always Combine, and then right-click the Taskbar button and choose "Close all windows".

I have my task bar set to not group like items unless I have too many open windows and space becomes a problem.. What I am wondering, has anyone found a way in this format, to say close all open explorer windows, simply by clicking on one of them. Or close all of another programs open windows.. I like having my windows fan out across the bottom rather than grouped together, but I miss being able to close all of one program in a single right click...

You could End process tree from task manager. I know, not very convenient.

This is Vista's(home basic SP2 IE7) Window mail, not windows live. Please don't tell me to dnld IE8, I tried it don't like it. That should have nothing to do with WM anyway.

Not sure exactly what day it was, but its been going on 4-5 days now.

I have never had this problem before now. When I am done checking/sending emails and I click X(close). Normally WM closes immediately, in the past 4-5 days after clicking close it stall for a few seconds, then up in the left corner where it says Inbox-Windows Mail, "(Not Responding)" is added. Then a few seconds later WM closes. I assume what every program is used to close WM, that's the problem. WM is the only page this happens with, web pages, spreadsheets, notebook, etc. all close ok.

Don't know if it has anything to do with it, but sometime Monday web pages stops being saved in my history. So I did a system restore back to last Sunday and WM still stalls then goes not responding before it closes.

Other things I have done.
I have ran error checking tool, did help.
Check defragmenter says it doesn't need to be ran.
Ran full VP scan, no help

Surely the problem can't be coming from the VP I switched to about a month ago. Bitdefender is supposed to be top of the line.

Now around a week ago I did run disc cleanup and deleted some files, surely that didn't cause the problem.

I'm running Windows 7 OS x 64 bit on an Dell XPS. Whenever I switch from the administrator user to a non-administrator user, Explorer posts an error message that states: "RoxWatchTray13.exe. Oxc0000022. Application unable to start correctly. Click OK to close application." Clicking OK removes the error message and allows the non-administrator user to proceed. However, I'd like to get rid of that annoying message. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

(XPSP2) When I double click on a folder in the Windows Explorer right-hand pane, it opens a search box instead of simply exploring the folder. Can anyone advise me how to turn it back to the normal behaviour?

This situation arose after I did some registry tidying to get rid of a much more irritating problem. So it won't surprise me if there is some registry key I still need to change.

Hi,
I am getting a strange problem in my Windows XP system with SP3 and all latest security updates from Microsoft. On the start up of XP, for the first time on whatever file or folder, I place the mouce and do a right click, explorer process gets hung and I have to do ctrl+Alt+Del and choose process explorer and end process tree. Then I have to do file new task and type explorer and enter. After this step it works fine. But the problem is very annoying because every time the system boots, I have to restart explorer once first. I am wondering if it would be due to any virus, as in that case it would stay for ever, not just till the first restart of explorer process.
Thanks in advance,
-pkd
