New T480 - Cannot update to Windows 1903

Q: New T480 - Cannot update to Windows 1903

I just bought a brand new T480 (which ships with Windows 1809) from lenovo.com from for my son to take to university (in a week). On arrival, I ran Windows Update and Lenovo Vantage update until neither showed any futher updates available to install. So far, so good. 48 hours later, Windows Update started showing that the Windows 1903 update was available so I tried to install it too. It churne for hours (literally) but always failed to install in the end. Next I downloaded the Windows 10 Update Assistant to have it handle the update to Windows 1903. It too churned for more than an hour, but ultimately the update failed. There are no error messages given. If there's a log file containing more verbose error information, I don't know where it is. I've done some Googling and browsed this forum, but if anyone else is having this problem, they haven't posted about it. At this point, I don't mind very much the idea of doing a factory reset and reinstalling the OS from scratch, but I'd prefer to update from here. I have installed a few apps (e.g. MS Office; an FTP client; etc.), but I can reinstall them after a wipe. However, it is critically important that this notebook be in optimal condition when my son takes it away to college next week. He has some computer skills, but I don't want him to have the distraction of having to do maintenance on a brand new pc. Any suggestions? Any questions I can answer for further troubleshooting?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a P51 20HH and it refuses to update to Windows 10 1903 due to a complaint of an old version of the Intel RST driver.  I tried following all the instructions to update the driver at both the Intel site, and the official RST driver here on the Lenovo site for P51 downloads.  None actually did anything.  They appeared to work, but actually didn't do anything because the driver update software didn't see any hardware to update.  I turned on debug output on the driver update script and it basically said nothing was applied since there was nothing to do. In my case with the P51 20HH, the driver files are all there but there is zero evidence (Device Manger, etc) that any of them are in use.  I don't have Optane, RAID, etc.  Microsoft update sees the driver as an old version so it won't do the Windows update.  Meanwhile, the Intel driver install packages don't see the driver as usable, so it won't apply the update!  It is a lock out.  So, my solution for the P51 20HH was to rename C:\Windows\System32\drivers\iaStorA.sys to something else.   Proceed with caution with this solution, because if your machine is really using RST, this could cause your storage to become inaccessable, which might put you in a bad boot loop and require a BIOS boot to recovery media.  You should absolutely verify that Device Manager (Storage controllers) does not list anything Intel.  Renaming the driver requires admin priv... Z50-70 notebook PC with Intel I7 CPU, Intel 4400 graphics, Windows 10 Home 64-bit.  I have tried twice (once a couple of months ago and once today) to install Windows 10 Update 1903.  Currently running Update 1803.  All I got was "Windows 10 Update Failed."  Note that this attempt was via a USB installation media for 1903 that was set up about 2 weeks ago. This was a decent computer when I got it (spring of 2005).  But has it reached obsolescence already? Microsoft says they will stop supporting 1803 in November of 2019.  What does that mean?  That I will no longer get annoying notifications of pending updates?  Of will some functionality be lost?History:  When installing Update 1803, ours was one of many PCs that had BSOD or do-loop failures.  I had to do a reinstall of Windows, which meant reloading all aps and documents.  After that I told Windows that my connection is metered, so *I* get to decide when to install updates. Thanks for any thoughts on this.

So my Windows 10 update screen is offering me Windows 10, version 1903. It's letting me choose when to install this update, which is really bizarre because it was forcing me to update with these large updates previously.

However I just installed the 1809 in February. Do I really need to install this update this soon? I tried to research it and it appears there are already problems with it.

Do I really have to update it again? It takes like 2+ hours to do (for me anyway)

Looking for advice/suggestions. Thanks. If not when do I need to do it or when should I do it?

Trying to get Windows 1903 so can use the PC XBOX app. Even though on the Lenovo site is says the X1 Extreme is compatible with Windows 1903, going to windows update gives me this message about 1903: The Windows 10 May 2019 Update is on its way. We're offering this update to compatible devices, but your device isn't quite ready for it. Once your device is ready, you'll see the update available on this page. There's nothing you need to do at this time.  What else do I need to do to make my maxed out X1 Extreme eligible for this update (still under warranty also).

I have tried several times to install the Windows 10 1903 feature update on my W530 with no success. The update proceeds normally and then after a reboot it will get to a point where it just puts up a message and indicated it is undoing the changes.  It reboots and I am back to square one. Last week the message in Control panel -> Windows Updates changed and said something to the effect that the new update was not compatible with my machine and it would let me know when it was ready.     I checked again this evening and it said the update was availible.  Tried the install again and it fialed the same way. Lenovo does not mention that the update is compatible with W530 or W540 here https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht508488 Will I ever be able to update to 1903?

Currently my W10 (1809) informs me the following: "The Windows 10 May 2019 Update is on its way. We're offering this update to compatible devices, but your device isn't quite ready for it. Once your device is ready, you'll see the update available on this page. There's nothing you need to do at this time." If my memory serves me correctly, even for the 1809 release, Lenovo did not "certify" my T431s as tested, yet I received the update at some point. I hope the same is to be expected for the May 2019 (1903) update? Anyone with a T431 received it yet? //timo

I work in Managed IT and use a T570 with an i7-6700U and 16GB of RAM. Windows 10 decided to do the 1903 update a couple of days ago. Today, I had to roll back to 1809 because 1903 made my system an unreliable mess. Everything was notably slower (though this laptop is so poorly cooled that the CPU is constantly throttling anyway), the system was regularly hard freezing when trying to wake it from locked state or put it to sleep and every thing it froze and I rebooted it, Windows would redetect "Base System Device." In addition, since the update, Lenovo Vantage kept telling me I had updates available for my Thunderbolt firmware and Intel Wi-Fi driver. The Thunderbolt firmware update was for the version I already had installed and constantly failed and so did the Wi-Fi driver. When I tried to manually download and install the update, it said the package was not compatible with my system. All of the above issues have been resolved by rolling back to 1809. I've been very displeased with how Lenovo quality control had slid overall lately but between the constant thermal issues with this laptop and now the 1903 update breaking so much, I have to ask what's going on here. We have a number of clients in the field with this model and if 1903 is going to start breaking them all, I need to know what Lenovo's going to be doing about it and when. Anyone else had these issues and figured out a solution for them? Thanks.

I am one of those Lenovo users running into the 1903 update issue due to the IntelRST driver issue. Currently, my driver is 15.2.1020, which falls in that range of problematic drivers. Attempting a driver update via device manager gets me the expected message that I have the latest driver. Lenovo does not list my machine as having been "tested" for the 1903 update, and it does not appear that any further driver updates are forthcoming. While they don't say my 4 year old machine is "end of life" it does seem like their actions suggest that.I'm curious if anyone with my model has tried any of the suggested solutions to facilitate the update:1. update driver directly from the Intel website (17.x.x or similar)..(this seems to be the logical step, but..still, a risk) 2. rename the driver file so windows ignores it 3. other..? I'll gladly go without the update rather than risk bricking my machine or causing further issues. Thanks in advance for any useful suggestions.

Each time that I run the FW update process and the application begins to update the FW, the system will Blue Screen with a DMA verify code and the system halts. There is nothing attached to the dock except the power bricks. The previous FW update of 3.153 worked properly. When the system restarts, Windows runs a disk check on the C:drive so it's a really hard stop. My P1 is running Windows 1903 and RAID 1.

Dear Community, first of all thank you for reading and maybe answering this. Like all of you who bought the Yoga 910, i had the bad luck to expierence the loud fan noise. After reading and searching for hours (in communities and several Youtube-Channels) i finally installed the BIOS that solved the problem (I don't know exactly which one it was, maybe the 2JCN39WW). I also reduced the max performance of the processor from 100 to 99 percent. It all worked perfectly. Sometimes i heard a little bit of fan noise when i was working on heavier stuff or when the battery charger was plugged.  After almost 2 years without further problems i installed the latest version of Windows 10 (1903). Unfortunately this was a big mistake! The fan starts with every programm/app i open up. When the battery charger is plugged in, it won't even stop. When i look at the data from the task-manager (while the fan noise is very loud) neither the CPU ( I7-7500U), nor the RAM (16GB) or the GPU (HD Graphics 620) will reach something near 95%, but the fan screams like i'm killing this device.I couldn't go back to the previous Windows version, because i waited for too long. The only thing i can do rightnow is to unistall it, but i prefer to wait for a helping answer from you (or mabye a new BIOS version). Have a nice week and best regards,Biond  sorry for my bad english.......

It worked before the update. I am not even sure that I have any driver installed. I can see no options nor I have any possibility to configure anything about touch pad from Mouse and pointing devices config or from Devices in Windows System settings (there is just touchpad sensitivity combo-box and nothing else)...  The rest of touchpad is working. I have Lenovo Vantage installed, no use of any options there. Could not find any applicable solutions using Google. So I decided to try here. I could provide additional informmation if needed. Please help. Thanks. Bojan

This describes my experience with a T580 (20L9CTO1WW) which has the above Fibocom WWAN adaptor. Everything was fine on Win 10 1809. But after the Win system updater prompted me to update to version 1903 the adaptor is no longer functional. In Device Manager it is no longer listed under Network Adaptors but now appears under System Devices as "Intel XMM7360-P'. That is the internal LTE chipset which suggests the card is still functional but not being correctly recognised by Windows. Yesterday, I spent around 2 hours with escalated Lenovo Tech Support trying to resolve this to no avail. We tried the following:updating to the latest firmware/driver package (https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/nz3wj21w.exe)uninstalling and reinstalling all driversforcing install of Lenovo driversrolling back to Win 10 1809rolling back to previous firmware/driversphysically removing and reinstalling the card So it seems there is a compatibility issue that will have to be resolved. Hopefully the next iteration of drivers/Windows updates can fix this. In the meantime, I would suggest anyone with a similar hardware setup not accept the 1903 May Update if offered. As Tech Support's final suggestion was to do a completely fresh install of (1809) Win 10 - somewhat undesirable for a lone driver incompatiblity. Alternatively, if anyone has successfully updated, please let me know and consider sharing your driver configuration. My PC is less than three years old, yet ever since the 1903 update, it keeps crashing for no apparent reason. This seems to happen whenever I am streaming content from BBC Sounds. The screen just shuts down and a a few second later the whole thing shuts down. Obviously if I happen to be recording anything with Audacity, the whole recording is ruined! I have tried not to be doing anything else at the same time, but this morning, I was just making a recording of a BBC Play on Catchup; nothing else at all, and the PC crashed yet again!

Has anyone else encountered this problem after the update? Or could it be just a coincidence and this is caused by something else?

Thanks in anticipation.

A:PC keeps crashing after 1903 Update

Hi Gemma

The only issue Ive seen is with 1903 is with Realtek Audio drivers, no crashing but serious lagging, would your PC happen to use Realtek Audio?

Steps I would take to try to resolve, and I'm presuming BBC Sounds is accessed via the web browser.
Clear browser cache https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/help/clear_cache
Try an alternative browser.
Update the Audio and Graphics card drivers from your PC manufacturers website.

Hello,Let me start off and say that I own a Lenovo T410, T420, T430, T480 and several other machines, and I am very familiar with these devices, and my primary operating systems are Windows 7 and OpenSUSE linux OS. As required by my employer, I bought a new laptop, Lenovo T480 which came with W10Pro (cannot downgrade) and installed an OpenSUSE KDE. In the beginning the T480 on W10 worked smoothly, but after one of the automatic updates, my sound system isn't working properly anymore. Before the update, I could have a dual channel sound output meaning, on W7 I could use "Realtek Audio Manager" to choose that I will have different volume setting for: 1. Machine speakers.2. Headphones if/when plugged in. This would prevent my laptop for blasting sound to the room through the speakers if I accidentally unplugged the headphone. This is a crucial feature to me as I am often connected to a meeting and I sometimes like to listen to music while working. This feature is gone. I have it working on the linux side, it is definitely driver/OS problem, not hardware. First, Lenovo T480 +W10 never came with realtek audio manager support.Second, I cannot download it seperately, and I somewhat get a buggy "resolution" if I downgrade where the mute button sticks. I am wondering if someone was able to solve this.Thank you for your time.-SJLPHI

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad P1, and I am unable to update my laptop to the latest feature update for Windows 10 (1903). My product number is 20MDCTO1WW and my BIOS is N2EET39W 1.21. When I tried to update through the update assistant previously, the assistant said that something went wrong -- with the error message (0xa0000400). I know that P1's are included in the list of compatible Lenovo devices that were tested for Win 10 1903 and my laptop's drivers and such are completely up to date through the Lenovo Vantage app. Does anyone know why my P1 isn't ready for the update and/or when it will be available for me to download and install? Before you attempt to upgrade from your current version of Windows 10 to version 1903, make sure all external storage drives(USB, SD, etc.) are disconnected.
Also make sure your computer's internal storage drive(SATA, SSD, eMMC, etc.) has more than 32 GB of free space.

Microsoft is concerned about the upgrade process being misdirected to the wrong drive letter if external storage drives are left connected.
The upgrade process also requires a certain amount of free space.

There are new Windows 10 laptops out there that come with a very small capacity storage drive, so I'm not sure how their owners are going to address the free space issue.

Version 1903 (also known as "May 2019 Update") is scheduled to be released very soon.

Hello,

I have a Lenovo M91p.  I bought Windows 10 and replaced Win7 that came with the desktop.  The most recent Windows 10 update (Win 10 release 19+) will not update my desktop now.  Microsoft tried but the update cannot be completed. The installation fails (FIRST_BOOT phase with error during SYSPREP_SPECIALIZE operation).  Microsoft tells me it may be because the BIOS is not compatible and contact Lenovo to get an answer.  My BIOS version and date is -->  LENOVO 9HKT43AUS, 7/11/2011.

1.  Does anyone know whether this version is compatible for Windows 10 most recent update to be installed?
2.  If not, is there a BIOS update I can get from Lenovo?  If so, where, what version, etc., details?

Thank you very much for any help and pointers.

Mod:  edited Subject line to add system model, and clarify the problem description

Hello everyone, Im using ThinkPad T470s with two external monitors (DELL U2711 DP and CINEMA DISPLAY 23" DVI) connected thru ULTRADOCK 40A2 20V (M2A0AN3Y) with 90W attached. With INTEL UHD 620 - everything works fine - till i disconnected all cables - and connect them in the new place and after WIN10 update and BIOS update... it stops working  I have actual UltraDock FW - ive tried all mentioned drivers - including actual ones - but the problem still remains. I cant use both DP and DVI monitors at the same time. When i disconnect DP i can use DVI... but not both at the same time like i did before. What can i do more? During this time ive also update BIOS - so theres maybe some option there? Does both monitors should be checked as DOCK SHARED SCREEN?I've tried 26.20.100.7158 - Latest DHC - no effects26.20.100.6912 - no effects26.20.100.6913 - "system doesnt fit actual hardware requriments" Its funny cause when i have my laptop OPEN i can strech my dekstop to two screen (my DELL 27 and ThnkLCD) - but when i close it there is no sign of that CINEMA DISPLAY is connected thru the DVI port. Few days ago the same configurations works fine  Please help since i need both monitors to work
