The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error

Q: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error

I have searched here and googled this error, and while I have found similar, nothing that same as this.

I have been unable to update my Itunes, so after some research I realized it was the failure to update quicktime durring the Itunes update that was really happening. I have tried multiple things to fix this, all of which have been unsuccessful. Nothing would tell me why, just that quicktime failed to update.

My next step was to uninstall quicktime, this also failed with no reason why. So I attempted to Manually delete all quicktime files, and then run tuneup utilities to remove all registry entries. However when doing this I found I could delete all files, except the folder c:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\QuickTimeStreaming.Resources\de.lproj . When I try I get the below error message
Code:
Cannot delete de.lproj: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error
When I try to go into the directory de.lproj I receive the this error message.
Code:

c:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\QuickTimeStreaming.Resources\de.lproj is not accessible.
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

I have tried doing it from a different user, I have tried from safe mode but just keep getting the same I/O device error. I have looked in the device manager and no errors there either. changing the permissions and ownership but am unable to do that as well. I have run a virus scan and rootkit scan with avg and a scan with Super Anti Spyware. All of these came of negative. Also because I'm sure someone will ask, yes I have administrator privileges.

I'm at a loss of what to do next.

I'm running windows xp sp sp3 Not sure on what version of quicktime I was running, but it had to be a version from the last 6 months.

Any ideas?

Preferred Solution: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error

hiya, maybe this could be of use
It sounds as though the file referred to in the error message is corrupt and Windows cannot read it.

Try running a disk check. If it finds and fixes errors, try reininstalling. If not it it doesn't work, go on to the next step.

Try renaming c:\programfiles\commonfiles\apple\mobile device support\syncservices\schemas\calendars.syncschema\contents\windows\calendars.exe as ...calendars.old.

If Windows will not allow that, then rename the containing folder.

This should allow the install to proceed as it will not see the corrupt file.

A:The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error

Hi tzakuzi,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

A fundamental question: What made you to decide that you have a problem with corrupt master boot record? What was the effect of such " corrupt master boot record" that made you sit up and take any corrective measure?

Is your external HDD not accessible?

Was it accessible before?

Have you tried it on other USB ports?

Have you changed the cable and tried?

Have you tried that HDD on any other PC and with what result?

If your ext HDD shows up Windows Disk Management, please post a screenshot.

I know, too many questions . But let us get a complete picture.

( If your PC has Windows 8 64bit, why did you not raise the query in Windows 8 Forum?)
A missed question added now. Do other external drives work on the machine?

Whatever you do, do not do anything that will cause a write action upon that pen drive until after the folders and files have been successfully copied off of that pen drive and onto an SSD or platter-driven hard-drive.

The message from my effort to read and write to my floppy drive also said "A:/ not accessible." I assumed (correctly?) the drive was the input/output device.

I checked power and data cables: both tightly seated. I know the drive is getting power; the green light on front lights, though I don't suppose that is proof it's getting all the power it should or where it should.

I checked my BIOS in case that had somehow inactivated it. But my BIOS only listed the A drive-no options offered.

I went to Device Manager, deleted driver, rebooted. Problem continued.

I tried a different floppy drive, with the same results. And I tried read/write operations with 2 different floppies, with both drives.

Exactly the same results as with the new physical drive..

What can I do now? (O/S is XPSP2). Replace the motherboard?

Hi

I recently did a clean install of W7 Professional. I installed W7 first on the SSD. Once the operating system was running I then proceeded to add the internal HDD (500G Seagate). Unfortunately the system just does not seem to recognise the HDD.

Device Manager:
In Device Manager->Disk Drives:
Drive 1: W7 sits on my 64G SSD and has the location 1 (1).
Drive 2: The 2nd drive is an internal 500G HD that has the location 0 (0). The drop down box of Device Usage shows: "Use this device (enable)"

Disk Management
I went to the Disk Management but:
a) only the Disk 1 is showing
b) it is does not appear to be seeing the 2nd disk

Computer Management
I went into Computer Management and tried to enable the Disk. Unfortunately it has come up with "The request could ot be performed because of an I/O device error"

The HD is an intertnal HD with Sata connectors.

1) I changed the Sata ports but still no difference
2) Windows says the drivers have loaded correctly and the device can be used
3) I ran the Trouble Shooter but no issues were found.
4)The same issues as above are occurring. Please see images below:

I've been currently using a 600gb SATA HDD for my OS etc and everything else. I decided to put in my other SATA 320gb HDD as I am going to need more space (Recording with my hd capture card takes up alot of space!). I put it into the HDD bay, plugged both the SATA cable and power cable into it. I turned on my PC and it read it and said it was set to go. I went into Computer Management to set it up and a window popped up saying I needed to initialize Disk 1 being the drive, so I clicked ok. It freezes for a second and then a small box pops up saying "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." Please help, I am very smart with computers for the main concept however HDDs are actually one of the only things I'm not very experienced with. Thanks guys! I appreciate any support. I am using Windows 7 64 bit OS in case that matters.

OK, first of all, we have no idea what you are working on. Post your exact system specs ie make and model of mb, cpu, amount of ram, etc. If this is a big box system, then post the make and model.

Have you rechecked/reseated both pw and data connections for the drive?

Have you tried a different sata cable and or a different sata port on the mb?

I am looking for help. I have a Toshiba Satellite A105-s4164 Window XP SP 2 Media Center Edition purchased in August. Just last night I noticed that my (D) Drive which is my DVD-RAM Drive as it reads now is not working correctly. I can play DVD's but it does not recognize CD-R/RW CD's nor actual Audio CD (retail). I seem to think that at an earlier time the Drive use to read CD-R/RW drive. ??? Could it just be the setting? The DVD-RAM is a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-841S.

I have gone through the forum and tried out all the suggestions I could find. Still the problem exist.

When attempting to copy files to a CD I recieve this message: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

After going through all of the suggestions I could find I decided to do a full recovery (factory) and the problem is still there.

I have gone through Record Now! and Window Media Player using an Audio CD (retail) and I recieve the following message disk empty or drive busy. When I open the file nothing is there.

Please help. This is driving me bonkers.

Thanks in advance.

I've created a new thread for your issue here.

If you've done a Factory Restore and the problem persists then the drive has physically failed. I think its time to use that warranty that came with the laptop.

I have a kingston 8GB microSD, i thought it was dead, but that was just my adapter, so now i have a new one. I am using a MicroSD -> SD -> SD USB reader.

When i stick it in, the device appears empty, i have to pull the MicroSD and SD adapter and reinsert them back into the USB reader for it to be recognized.
After my computer recognizes it, If i go to my computer in windows explore, it lags for a while if i right click or double click on the drive. After that, i can't access it at all, a little while later (regardless of weather the SD lock is on or off) i get:
M:\ is not accessible.

The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.
I have tried various formating utilities, some tend to crash, and i think the microSD has actually caused a couple BSOD's.

Im wondering if anybody has a solution, or some good format utilities to try. I am not to determined because it is an Asian (no offence!) brand, and they tend to not last long. I am also planning on replacing it with a 4gb version for better compatibility.

Running WinXP SP3, same thing seems to happen if I am on Win7, just without the error, explorer just kinda freezes if i try to access it, i haven't spent much time waiting.

EDIT:
If it helps, DS lite's with M3's do recognize and allow me to load a few pictures i managed to get on before this started happening (a few days after i got it and before my SD adapter died), but if i try a game it just doesn't loa... Read more

Are you running SP1? If not, you should check to see if there is a BIOS update which corrects this, or some setting you can change through the CMOS Setup utility to modify the PromoteLimit Value your system uses as the CPU moves into a deeper idle state. You might have to disable that setting completely before you can resolve this, but we won't know that until you research it.

Or, you might simply choose to live with it...

I am trying to backup server files to another computer on the network. However, I have run into a folder that has a a few thousand small images and every 20 or so image copy pops the error "Cannot Copy ****: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." Instead of doing a mass transfer of these image files I now have to try to copy the single file that pops up this error over and over again by drag n drop until the error goes away. I don't know what is causing it and I don't know why after about 5-10 min of repeated copying attempts it suddenly has no problem with the exact same file and another file suddenly can't be copied across the network in that folder.

Any ideas what is going on here?

I have already tried running repairs on the hard disks in question.

Hi There,
Am deleting a folder on my hard drive but the error "Request Cannot be performed because of an i/o device error".

This is how I can up with this error.

This file[folder] was copied from another machine to me machine. After sometime me machine started slowing down. Then it became so frequent.
I did a scan using AVG but as soon as the scan reached this folder, it hang. I did a check disk with /f and /r attributes and it hang at this files/folder.

I removed the hard disk, slaved it on another [perfectly working] machine and seem to hand as well.

Please am sure someone out there has a get around. Please if you do, kindly appreciate your assist.

I'm not sure if this should be posted here, since I guess that it is a systems failure issue.
I am having some major issues with attempting to do a backup of all my system drives - all attempts have failed.
What I have done so far;
Tried to do a Windows backup from my laptop to a Passport external hard drive - first failure.
Failed again when I tried another Windows backup, this time to an Imation external hard drive - second failure.
Did an Administrator CHKDSK/R on the Laptop hard drives, and both external hard drives. All came up clean.
Tried to do two more alternative backups using Macrium Reflect - both similarly failed.

After each failed backup, all attempts got messages similar to the following;

I upgraded to Windows 10 a while back. Every time I open the computer I get a pop-up notification telling me the USB device is unrecognized. I have no USB devices in any of my 3 USB ports.
I sent my computer in twice. No help. They just uninstalled everything and reinstalled everything and told me it should be fixed. It is not. I then went about updating every driver in my Device Manager. I uninstalled the Unknown USB Device and then updated
other drivers. Certain drivers (such as PCI Express Root Port #3 - 9C14) when updating would also reinstall the Unknown USB Device, which I would then uninstall and keep working down the list. At the end of updating EVERYTHING I scanned for hardware changes
and "found" the Unknown USB Device.
From what I can tell, and I know very little about this stuff, my computer can't name one of my USB ports. Since it can't figure out what it's called it can't download the proper driver for it. Since it can't download the proper driver it can't work properly.
The practical result from this is that one of my three USB ports does nothing when I put in any USB item (connect my android phone, thumb drive, presentation clicker, etc).
I've looked on tons of forums. My current thought is that if I can tell my computer what the deice is or download the right driver and tell my computer to use that driver for this device it should solve my issue. But I don't know how to know what the name

The Bluetooth settings page says "Bluetooth is turned off" and there are no options on the settings page or the system tray to turn Bluetooth on.
The Device Manager now has "Unknown USB device - device descriptor request failed" where it did not before.
Other devices all seem to be working fine - USB devices plugged in are being recognized and work properly. Only BT seems to be broken.
I've tried:
uninstalling the device and rebooting
installing the latest updated chipset drivers from the dell website
windows updates
pretty much all of the advice here: http ://troubleshooter.xyz/wiki/fix-usb-device-not-recognized-device-descriptor-request-failed

Any other ideas?
Thanks

Hello everyone,
i hope you can help me sorting out this issue that is causing me a hard headache at the moment.

I've bought this new Lenovo Z50-70 laptop with windows 8.1 preinstalled on it. Fresh new.

I'm trying to connect via usb a guitar audio interface (Line6 POD HD500) so i installed the drivers via the .exe setup file i downloaded from Line6's site.
The device worked fine on my previous HP pavilion with windows 7.

Now when i completed the installation, i connected it and i had this error:Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)A request for the USB device descriptor failed.
I used slimdrivers to update all the other drivers, in case it was a conflict causing the error.
I checked via command prompt with command "pnputil -e" and i saw a driver from the vendor of the device listed, so it is installed correctly i think.
I tried all USB ports i have, 3.0 and 2.0 on one side of laptop and 2.0 on other side.

When on device manager, if i click update drivers and choose the "let me pick from a list of device drivers.." i don't see the company name of the device.

i saw that another guy posted a really similar problem on SevenForum and he figured out how to force windows to use the drivers but he didn't post the solution.. Here is the post: Can't get Windows 7 x64 to use the drivers I've installed repeatedly Solved - Windows 7 Help Forums

A:USB device not recognized. Device descriptor request faile

I am having the same exact problem as you, Cattanius. I couldn't get it to connect to my computer over 2 years ago and then just decided to try it the other day. I didn't expect anything to show up in device manager because I thought the usb port was fubar, but then I see the same message you got and all of the sudden there's hope! I hope.

My computer keeps telling me Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed), so I looked up how to fix it and they told me to uninstall it then scan for hardware changes and it will reappear working properly. Only it did not come back working properly, it came back the same. I am also 98% sure that this "unknown USB device" is my built-in webcam that has never once worked. So if someone wants to help me out and allow me to use my webcam that would be great!

I know that a similar question has been asked before but, not with the last part of the message, (Device Descriptor Request Failed). I get this, in Device Manager, and I have searched for an answer on the net. Also it is a Code 43. I went through my laptop, with an HP Technician this morning, I might add at a cost of 5p/minute, for 30 odd minutes. He has said that because I had gone over to Windows 8.1 and the recovery discs I made will not load, to put back in Windows 8. I have to send the laptop back for re-installing the OS, because Windows 8.1 do not have the update for my problem. Also the R.H. USB socket has a failure ID:0GAPTK-6T7716-MFPWWK-8D1Q03. I personally think that this is all what the problem is. a duff USB. Is this a cop-out???
My question is; has anyone heard of Windows 8.1 having driver WHQL problems?? Very.

Any/all ideas, appreciated.

ps, I only found out the problem with the usb when I tried to download a Mobi file to a Kindle for my wife. The other usb's work OK.

A:Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)

Is there only one USB port on the right hand side? Sometimes manufacturers connect internal devices via an unused USB port internally. USB ports are usually in groups of two, seeing only one port is usually a sign that the wiring has been redirected internally to something else like a Bluetooth adapter or wifi adapter. It may even be a card reader or touchpad. Is anything like that not working? If it is start looking for a driver for it.

Greetings folks

I have a problem that bugs me for years, I never intentionally solved it, sometimes those errors disappears and all USB ports work fine, sometimes they do not. So anyone can help me please, it would be great.

Some of my ports do not work all the time, I cannot identify a specific moment. Inside the Device Manager, Universal Serial Bus controllers, I get 1, 2 or more "Unknown USB Device ( Device Descriptior Request Failed )", sometimes more sometimes less.

CPU: Intel Core i7 3770
Motherboard: AsROCK H77 Pro4/MVP
Windows 10 all available updates downloaded and installed as of today, and everyday. The problem appeared on Win 8 or 7, not sure when. So it's not necessarily Windows 10 specific. I ported it to 10.
Here is what they look like:
http://prntscr.com/d6rm6k

Bios is up to date. Chipset drivers updated, various solution tried from googling, I even managed to make all USB ports stop working testing some of these solutions, I had to restore windows from a ghost image I had.

It's like these USB ports remain suspended sometimes.

Any advice on what to try? The most annoying part is that from the frontal USB ports some stop working randomly too.

Thank you

Hello,  I seem to be having an issue with my Thinkpad T470p. I've had it for about a year and a few months ago, all the 3 USB ports stopped working and so did the integrated camera. It would work at times and then stop working. For the past 2 weeks, everything has completely failed. So far I've done the following: -I've reset the BIOS to default settings and still there is no change.-The USB ports are enabled in BIOS settings as well. -Fast startup is diabled-The autosuspend for USB devices has been disabled in the power settings as well-All drivers have been updated using the Lenovo System Updates-This is a fresh install of Windows 10 so there is no previous state that I can go back to. (It wasn't working when I was running Ubuntu either even with all the right drivers installed.)-Troubleshooting cannot seem to find a fix for the error either One weird thing though is that my WD Elemnts HDD works fine when plugged in to any of the USB ports but other than that nothing else works. Any and all help will be much appreciated. My warranty expired just before these issues started so I don't really think I can get it repaired by Lenovo services.

Fresh install of Windows 10 and the last driver I need to sort out is the above.

I believe it is my powered USB 3 hub to which I plug in my keyboard and mouse. Technically it is working but I don't like seeing yellow triangles on devices.

So are there any fixes?

A:Unknown USB Device (device descriptor request failed)

If it's a generic USB 2.0 Powered Hub then technically there's should be no drivers needed by Windows, if it's a USB 3.0 Hub then I'm unsure (since I don't own any USB 3.0 Hubs).

Might be a Windows bug, basically Windows can't find the description information to display the Hub's name in the Device Manager example: Generic USB Hub, Root Hub Device, etc....

I'm pretty sure everything is working as should, you're good minus the minor annoyance if all device connected through the USB Hub is recognized by Windows; if you right click Properties on the yellow triangle it probably says "The Device is working properly".

Tried uninstalling and restarting PC. Reinstalled Windows made from media tool. Nothing fixed it. Did a google search and nothing has worked. No USB drivers on the PC maker's website.

Any ideas?

You can try going into device manager > select show hidden devices and delete all "inactive" usb device appearances. In my example below, there would be four. Once done, reboot and try your device again:

So how do i fix this is there something with my mouse is there something with my software?
Oh yea and on top of that i have 2 more issues that i jut can't solve by myself.

2.) Unknown USB-device(port reset failed)
3.)DVD Drive(optical drive) doesnt show up on the device manager but it sounds like it's working and it opens and closes.
4.)Front ports of my PC doesnt work if i plug an USB in it doesnt do anything (it does work perfectly in the back)

I don't know though if i should make more threads but they somewhat relate to each other,

I have an external Bluray/DVD drive (ODP1201=S3-B) that works perfectly on Windows 7 but is not recognised by my new laptop which has Windows 8.1 64 bit. Can anybody explain why this is and what I do to get pass it, or is this a problem with Windows 8.1?

The device is listed in Win 7 as "hp bd rom bc 5501h", and the driver is 6.1.7601.17514

I have now tried various USB devices; I have connected a USB 2.0 External Hard Drive and a USB 2.0 Canon Camera both of which work OK, I have also connected a Seagate 1T external drive which is USB 3.0 an that was OK as well (the ports are all USB 3.0 on the laptop hence the reference to the which USB type)

The error message is as follows: "USB Device Not Recognised", When I go in to Device Manager I find two USB error listings, Unknown USB Devise (Device Descriptor Request failed) & Unknown USB Devise (Port Reset Failed)

I have been advised that this error can arise when a drive doesn't receive enough power from the system. The device does have two USB connectors, I have tried using both of them. The power cable going to the powered USB on the laptop and the data going to the adjacent USB (there are a pair of USB sockets on either side of the laptop, the right hand side having the only powered socket).

A:Unknown USB Device - A request for the USB device descript

I'm too of opinion that it's a power issue. Laptops are not known to have much power thru USB ports, not even some desktops for that matter. Possible solutions: If that laptop has USB3 port you can try it in there, it gives more power and is compatible with USB2. Another one is to ad external power to the drive. One of the USB connectors on the twin cable has only two connection tabs and is for extra power to device. That one can be connected to universal USB charger for phones etc. That's how I solved a problem with a HDD in external enclosure.

I'm experiencing slim keyboard not being recognized in the Windows 8.1
The keyboard was working fine until just one day it just stopped working.
I tried factory reset literally 8 times along with most recent BIOS update and dell's recommended update software. + power setting --> disabling power saving on USB
It still come up as unrecognized each time even with fresh reinstall.
I was wondering if this is a hardware issue or just software bug from factory reset.
I don't think there is a available driver for this kind of problem is there?

Ok, today when I turn on my computer in the morning all of a sudden it took ages to boot, when it booted my D: drive was not showing in MY COMPUTER.

Computer wasvery unresponsive, so I checked the Administrative events and I saw like a hundred of this message:

A request to this device has been cancelled.
Device: \Device\RaidPort0
Model: WDC WD1002FAEX-007BA0
Firmware Version:05.0
Serial Number: WD-WMAUR0614125
Port: 1

I had 3 Sata drives in my system, this one (Wester Digital Caviar Black 1000gb) had my sample libraries and it had just like 19gb of free space.

When I disconnected the drive computer booted normaly.
I dismounted the drive and put it on a usb docking station and it was not recognized and computer was slow again..

I see the BIOS and the HDD shows there.. (strange)

I can't believe my HDD died on me cause I just have like 4 months with him..

What are your advices over this issue??

Thanks a lot people

A:a request to this de device has been cancelled

Try burning this iso to a cd/dvd: WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS / WD VelociRaptor

Boot from the optical drive and see what WD's diagnostics program has to say about the drive. (WD's diagnostics program is the same for most of their products, so don't worry if the product on the d/l page doesn't match yours.)

If the drive seems to be only marginally healthy you may want to make sure you backup all data from it before running the tests.
