Windows 8 flashing screen before logon screen

Q: Windows 8 flashing screen before logon screen

My PC was working fine before today, until I used Ultra UXtheme patcher for Win8 x64 and then applied a custom VS for Win8.
After a restart, Windows Explorer was not launching, so I opened task manager and did a sfc /scannow. After a reboot, I get to the Windows 8 boot menu (I have a dual-boot on this HDD with win7), and then the screen just turns on and off every few seconds, with the numlock light flickering with the screen.
I tried using the automatic repair, both from the boot menu and from a backup USB, but it does not detect anything. and I still have the same issue.
I restored the backups of uxtheme.dll, uxinit.dll, and themeui.dll, but that didn't help either.
Any help?
Attached is my ntbtlog.txt.
Thanks in advance. There is no BSOD, the HDD keeps on spinning a few minutes after boot, and the numlock keeps on flashing.
Anything else I can do from my win7 install? I'm currently trying to delete the theme.
Edit: deleting the theme doesn't help, safemode doesn't help either. IMHO, it seems to be a driver issue, but there were no driver updates when it was working?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I am working on a Dell Inspiron laptop (model 1750) that boots fine to safe mode however, when i boot to regular mode the screen starts to flicker at the logon screen. No visible buttons are available to select the user. I have tried startup repair, uninstalled video drivers and scanned for and removed malware. The machine is running Win 7 SP 1(64 bit). Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Edit: Did a reload and fixed the issue. If anyone has another fix please post. I will check back in case I come across another machine with the same problem.

Hey guys,

Here is an interesting situation I have. The other day my computer started running really sluggish. I decided to restart and when I did I noticed I couldn't log on to the machine. The Windows Login screen comes up but the curson doesn't come up to put a password in. Ultimately I'm stuck here. The screen at this point begins to flash. I started taking things apart and noticed I did have a bad fan. I swapped that out and still nothing worked. I have another PC so I decided to put my hard drive into that machine and luckily I was able to get onto it and pull off crucial data that I need.

At this point I'm thinking graphics card is messed up. However I put the hard drive into the PC that originally crashed. I was able to log on to the machine however the screen did blink every now and again. It wasn't as consistent as the "bad drive". After I was able to log on I shut that "bad machine" down again and put the suspect "bad drive in again. Still I'm unable to log in and the screen keeps flashing. It'll go black for a second come back up and be fine then flash again.

Right now I'm thinking...could be a bad video card however I don't understand why I cannot log on to the machine. Any suggestions?

Hey everyone I should let you know that I am not entirely sure this is a hardware issue but I'll ask here. Since I got my desktop made I keep getting a grey and black flashing screen after the windows loads to my login screen. I have gotten a replacement gpu as I expected this as the issue. I have tried multiple full factory resets, different monitors and cords to see if that was the issue but nothing works. I have uninstalled my gpu, monitor, and CPU, updated everything too(sorry this is so long). The only solution I have found is putting it to sleep and waking it up temporarily fixes it. The problem only occurs after i shut my computer down and and start it up for the first time. I have had this problem for over a year and i am desperate for any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.

It may be that someone didn't turn off the PC rather that it experienced a damaging event and shut down.Suggest you check the RAM - remove and reseat and try rebooting. If not successful your mother board may be damaged - nasty thought. There is also this site which may be relevant.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831515If you can get your PC going suggest you check Event Viewer. Then restore files from the recycle bin and then use SHIFT/DELETE to get rid of them, delete a small file and see if emptying the recycle bin works OKPaul

I don't know too much about computers and I just got a hand-me-down Dell Precision 320 PC from my dad just last weekend and it just crashed. I got a message saying something crashed and if this was the first time I saw it I just needed to reboot my computer. I proceeded to do so and then I got the mysterious black screen with movable cursor hanging scenario. I booted up the advanced boot menu and went to repair computer to "Last Known Good Configuration" and since then it boots up to passed the windows loading screen to a stock windows 7 screen and it flashes about every seven seconds with the cursor blinking to loading something back to idle. It hangs here until I turn it off. I am not sure if this has anything to do with the situation but there have been a couple of blackouts in my house due to heat that caused my computer to shut off a couple times.

Safe mode gets the same results

Is it creating more user folders? At some point Administrator.computer description name.000 wasn't there. Corrupted registry hive? I'm not sure! Restarted many times, used Last known good configuration, and it's still black after the boot screen. Please help quick, she uses it a lot. Thank anybody so much..

I am having this problem that the bottom of the screen keeps flashing and there are several obvious light lines across the screen when under grey background. However, it seems to be fine under other colors (in boot screen check it's also fine). Here're some photos for the light lines. As for the flashing problem I cannot capture any photos. (Photos are captured by NIKON D7000 DSLR)

I purchased this Precision M3800 model with 4K touchscreen last April. And this problem repeatedly appears several times. And I have replaced the screen twice before this one.
I have done my research online. It says it's either the screen has something wrong or the wires are loose. I don't think my normal everyday use should make such damage to SEVERAL SCREENS. I use this mobile workstation for some design work at school. Software I use is mainly Photoshop, Illustrator, Rhino Modeling & Keyshot rendering.
Can anyone help me with this?

Hey I just went through something very similar. I found that my SATA cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard had failed. I replaced it with a new SATA cable, and it booted right up. Try the cable first if you have one lying around, plus its a cheap solution. If you replace the cable and it still won't boot up, it might be your hard drive. Seeing as how your machine is that old, it could fail at any time.

After not turning on my PC for about a month, I went to turn it on and the following events took place:
1. Normal boot to Desktop, no problems
2. Desktop image is stable on both monitors (dual monitor setup)
3. I let it sit there for a couple of minutes waiting for everything to load
4. I click to open "ANY" program and screens go to a flashing state of black and momentary program, back and forth, back and forth, single screen or both doesn't matter, Checked all connections off of video card output to monitors and there fine.
5. Finally I get the "BLUE" screen of death
6. PC automatically shuts down and goes to boot up a Option Screen for SAFE MODE
7. PC works fine in SAFE MODE w/Network option, but won't do a "RESTORE" either from SAFE MODE
I never got a Win 7 Disk with the PC, but I did create a IMAGE disk on my WD Portable HD a few months ago. How do I get that file (on the WD HD) to run as I can't see any EXE files to get it started and I can't get the PC the start it either. I'm starting to attempt to copy all my files off the PC in case I'll need to something drastic.

Hi Everyone!

I just joined and hopefully I can be of some help for others, but for starters I need to ask for help for myself! Before posting this, I did a search of the forums here but did not find anything identical to my issue.

I have a 10-month old Acer 5100 notebook that will no longer start Windows Vista (Home Premium if that matters).

A few nights ago I noticed the machine was at the "Windows did not shut down properly" screen (black background/white text). Unfortunately I was not around the machine when it got into this mode. The screen showed a list of 5 or less choices - I think the default highlighted choice was to let Windows search the hard disk for errors. I chose this but it didn't seem to start after watching it for several minutes. So being the impatient sort, I rebooted the PC and the same black screen with choices displayed. This time I selected 'Start Windows Normally' but when the system came back up it ends at the same screen again. (I believe the "Windows did not shut down properly" screen I was seeing was not the normal one I've always seen, but a different one with less choices, if that makes sense)

So I said forget this, I have a backup. I tried restoring a backup of the hard drive I made with Acronis True Image (I booted off the True Image CD). I chose to only restore just the C: partition. Both times I tried, it gets to over 50% complete then there's a message about the image being corrupt.

Hi fellas,

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 which stopped working three years ago. It was running Windows XP with SP 2 or 3 - I can't remember for sure. It has 2GB RAM and a 256MB ATI Radeon graphics card.

Whenever I boot up it goes straight to a black screen with a flashing cursor on the top left. There is no Dell splash screen and no option to access the BIOS by tapping F8. This Dell has four indicator lights on the back to let a user know if there is a problem. The first three lights are green and the fourth one in orange. I looked this up on the manual and it says refer to technical support.

So far I have tried the following:
Removed optical drives to see if the machine would boot up without them - it didn't. I am not confident enough to start taking parts off the motherboard just yet.
Booted up without any additional peripherals attached including mouse and keyboard
Tried booting up from an old Windows XP install disc - that had no effect either

So I am pretty much stumped as to what to do with this machine. Doing a Google search, others with the same problem have been unable to fix it. I just want to know if it is worth the time to revive this machine, or to let go. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I've been having this problem. When I start my computer, the whole screen is white for awhile, then it turns black. There is no windows startup logo or my computer brand logo. Then my screen starts flashing and the power button on my monitor blinks and the monitor makes TOK sounds every 2 seconds and then the screen flashes and starts doing that over and over until it decides to make the whole screen white and stay like that. Here's what it looks like:
I tried manually restarting my computer by holding the power button and after a few tries, sometimes, if I'm lucky, it will let me login and then everything is fine.
Today, I went through this process and today I tried turning off the monitor when the screen was white. It restarted and black flashing but made the screen turn white faster. I just kept trying, turning the monitor off and on again because I didn't know what to do. Then I was so lucky, the login page for windows came up and I was able to login; now everything is normal. I can go online and everything without any problems until I shut down my computer and start it up again. Then it's back to square one.
Can anyone help me fix this problem? Should I buy a new monitor? I've had this one for a few years, but my desktop is new; It's one year old in 3 days. (April. 4)
Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone, So I've been able to correct most of the bugs on the Y2P since my switch to Win 10. My biggest lingering issue is the screen flashing when I take it on battery power. All of my drivers are up to date. I think that I've narrowed down the issue for any of you that may also be having this problem.  1. Windows 10 comes with a battery saver option, this is an option that works very well on its mobile devices. 2. Our Eneregy Manager hasn't been updated from .51 as of yet. 3. The EM is clashing with the Win 10 battery saver software.  This makes me think that the problem is compatibility between the OS and the EM software. I don't want to delete the EM because I use the Conservation Mode as my primary which has done wonders for my battery since I've had this ultrabook. I've disabled Battery Saver on Win 10 but the problem still occurs. Has anyone contacted Lenovo about this?  The second bug is with the new Win 10 touchpad driver available on Lenovo's site. It did fix the scrolling issue that wasn't happening after I upgraded but now on Chrome and Word it just starts zooming in with the scrolling action. Is there any way to report bugs like this to Lenovo and is anyone else having that issue?  Also the Graphics Driver on the Y2P downloads page is not the most current and neither is the Wifi driver. If anyone needs help upgrading those properly send me a message and I'll give you info on how to do it.

My screen has been tearing and showing black boxes for months now. It sometimes gets so bad that it makes my computer crash. It's so bad that at this point that I cant operate my laptop for more than 10 minuets before it crashes. I'm not sure if it's a problem with Windows or my computer, but I honestly can't think of what caused this. The only damage done to the computer is a crack in the screen, but the screen problems started a good while after I got the crack, so I doubt that it is the source of my issue.

I've looked at every possible thread, and everyone else has had a different kind of flash. I don't know what to do.

I cannot get to my desktop as this black screen is preventing me to do so.

It doesn't even give me enough time to log in!
It happened once before but it magically started to work the other time.
This never happened when I was still using the stock 640GB HDD that the laptop came with. So maybe I'm thinking it's because of my SSD having problems?

Fortunately, I can still get to Safe Mode and it says I got a BSOD and here's some details that it showed:

BCCode: d1
BCP1: 0000000000000010
BCP2: 0000000000000002
BCP3: 0000000000000000
BCP4: FFFFF8800170F5D6

I went to Event Viewer and took a look on what made my computer mess up and it says that winlogon.exe and Explorer. initiated the restart of my computer and said there was no reason for it.

I have a (my kid?s) HP Pavilion DV6-7002ax (aka dv6z-7000 (AMD-A10-4600M) using Win 7 (64) Home Premium and it has lately (last few weeks) developed a weird ?blue screen with active cursor? hanging habit.

After you log-on and the welcome screen pops up with the spinning circle and then before the desktop displays it switched to displaying a pale blue screen, with active mouse cursor.
Up to that ?blue screen? point, after logging on, the ?boot? is slow but normal, based upon my experience with this HP Pavilion.

This blue screen delay/hanging lasts around 3 ? 5 minutes and then the desktop loads and all is well.
I have searched the web and found many references to black and blue screens with active cursor related to HP Laptops but I have not found a real solution that has fixed my problem. Apart from just wait and wonder!

3. Registry Clean and Defrag with Wise Registry Cleaner

There is a hotfix for this issue, with the issue being so wide spread one would think Microsoft would put it in an update. The hotfix is called Windows6.1-KB2578159, make sure to download the 64 bit version from Microsoft's site. This will hopefully fix your issue. At the hospital I work at we have had this issue a lot and just now found this hotfix, so I can't say for sure if it will fix your issue. Also make sure you have all the Windows updates installed. Hope that helps.

That was to prepare you for history of this XP installation.

then, few days back, I used a exhaustive program called TuneUp utilities for XP 2008 edition. Somehow, I got hooked into changing Display setting etc. No probs. However, on few tries of changes, I happened to remember I clicked on the Configuration option of , 'Switch to Default Windows XP Logon UI' or something that prompted that TuneUp wants to bypass the VistaLOGON Ui.

After that setup change, the XP goes to boot process. On appearance of Logon screen, which somehow, it still props up old Vista Ui logon, a BOSD appears. STO P error. "Your system has been shutdown to prevent damage to registry."

I tried all options in Safe Mode, F8 button. I also used the "Don't shutdown on bluescreen option" That's how I managed to note down the Registry thing.

It also prompts me to disable 'Shadowing' option of RAM in BIOS. Although I doubt, cause the XP was working fine without any bios change.

I do not hv any backup disk or a bootable XP disk. Though I am having a Win95 partition and can boot to... Read more

A:LOGonUI.exe corrupt? Blue screen as soon as Logon Screen appears

One small thing to add: How can i copy the LogonUI.ex_ from a directory created for a XP SP2 file set, to windows\system32\logonUI.exe Is it a command called as expand.exe Is it inside XP SP2 directory. Can it be run from DOS bootup without HIMEM access. Basic DOS? Or is it recommended to boot up from XP bootable CD and run expand .exe to unpack LogonUI.ex_ or just copying internet dowloaded LogonUI.exe for SP2?

After installing the latest NVIDIA 182.50 Drivers for my 8500 GeForce 8500GT card on my Gateway AMD x64 with Vista Home Premium 64bit, now at start up the Boot screen doesn't come up and neither does the Vista green loading bars, just get black screen, no signal until the Vista Logon screen appears. I used to get the Boot screen with F10 boot options and F2 BIOS options and the Gateway Logo, but not anymore.

Any idea why and how I can get the boot screen back ??

Hi people, i've just registered to this forum to ask you about this, Since i've made a registry defrag with TuneUp Utilities (which probably has gone wrong), when i reset the computer, and I logon to my user, it shows a black screen, then back at the logon screen. If I do it again, the user doesn't show up anymore!
It happened three times already, i had to make new users, and i'm sick of it. Any ideas of what could it be?

A:Black screen after login for some seconds, then back at logon screen!

Yet another case of registry defraggers causing harm. In the future, you know now to stay far away from them.

I suggest a system restore to get to a point before TuneUp utilities. If that doesn't work, it will be time for a repair install.

Good luck!

Alright, Well I play multiple games and I have the same problem with any game. When I play for like 20minutes or so my video goes insane! It flashes black and completely screen lags, Then it usually pixelates the screen after done flashing. Then after probably another 5 or 10, It will just completely lock up my computer then bring me to the blue screen. This has only started happening since i got Vista, Then I tried to see if getting windows 7 would fix it, But no...

Im pretty sure the problem is that these new operating systems are clashing with my drivers, All drivers are up to date, Hardrive checked, Video card working fine, RAM is all good.

If somone has had this same problem and fixed it some how please let me know.

Due to a power cut earlier my PC naturally shut off the way you would if you switched it off at the plug.

It brought me into the windows error recovery screen and loaded until I reached the login screen.
Upon saying "Please wait" my screen begun to flash black rapidly and wouldn't load. The monitor wasn't going off or anything, the screen was just blinking.

It still does this every time I reboot my computer, so I can't log in at all.
It also does this in all safe modes so that is out of the question too.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Hello! I recently got a windows 10 ASUS laptop, and I tried to install this theme on it. After installing it, I went to personalization, and clicked on the theme. The screen started flashing black and light gray, I tried rebooting, but to no avail. It starts off with the normal loading screen, and after that a flickering black and grey screen, I am still able to move the mouse around but it doesn't help. If anyone has any information on how to fix this problem I would be very grateful.

Here is a video of my screen:

My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite C850
I Was trying to get windows 8.1 installed, and had tried to preform a clean boot, after installing an update, and after the windows logo, the screen was black and the backlight turned off, then on again, and repeated.

I have tried Safe mode, a refresh of my pc and a low resolution boot.
I can boot Android through grub which I had previously installed, but not windows.

Can anyone help me, if I have to delete everything I will, but this doesn?t seem like I would.

SO my sons laptop started to boot to a black screen with a mouse cursor. I can see the screen to select to boot from safe mode etc. but once the little animated windows logo stops it goes to a complete black screen with a working mouse cursor.

The laptop in question is... Acer Aspire-5560-sb256, AMD quad core A6-3400m, AMD radeon HD6520G.

I went to the Acer website and spent hours there looking on how to flash a bios but all of it required me to be in windows to do it. i get the impression the video works because i see the Windows animated logo and the mouse cursor works. Maybe i am wrong ?

I purchased a external hard drive enclosure and then scanned the laptops hdd on my computer with MSSE and Super anti spyware, were a few bad items but nothing alarming, i was able to transfer a few large game files to and from the drive with zero issues. So i am reasonably sure its not a drive problem.

I removed and re-seated the ram from the laptop, and it still seems to be fine.

I tried booting from all the safe mode selections and without safe-mode, neither of them resolve this issue.

As far as i can tell i have tried all the solutions i could think of, i know enough about computers to basically get myself into trouble Seriously all i know about them is from being an avid PC game player, but i know enough to take apart a computer and put it all back, its really the software side that stumps me the most.

Any assistance with my problem would be greatly appreciated, so thank you in... Read more

I turned on my laptop and after I logged on all my letters were replaced with symbols. I then restarted my laptop and now even my log in screen is symbols and when I get to the desktop my screen just keeps flashing and I can't click on anything. It just keeps flashing and loading nothing. I can't do anything on it. I didn't install anything the last time it was on either and I'm the only person who uses the laptop.

A:Windows 8.1 Symbols and Flashing Screen Won't Stop

It looks like the physical font files on disk have been replaced. You need to re-install the Windows 8 ones.

If possible go to Fonts in Appearance and Personalization of the Control Panel, select font settings and click Restore default font settings.

my windows have some kind of problem in startup, after the "welcome" screen then the cursor appears with loading circle but the windows wont get to the desktop instead of my screen flashing like the disco light. however I was able to enter the safe mode with networking successfully. Ive tried everything to fix it while in safe mode including sfc /scannow and chkdsk. It only give "windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them" and give me the location of the unsolved corrupted files and fix it manually but I cant found the replacement for the files. Ive tried reinstalling the graphic driver but It cant be done in safe mode. Ive tried startup repair and system recovery, but both dont have chance to fix them because I dont have any recovery point for the previous time. Does using windows 7 repair installation work in safe mode? If it does, I will download the .iso for my OS which is SP1. Please help me!

A:Windows 7 stuck on startup and screen flashing

Check this thread and see if it is applicable for you. Windows 7 update (KB3022345) causing corrupt files - see post #24

The above may or may not resolve sfc corruption, depending whether you have other files corrupted.

Also try run startup repair 3 times, it seems to solve problems for others.

Did you try uninstalling the graphics driver?

Hi all,

I have had a multitude of minor glitches with my 6-month old HP Pavillion laptop. A lot of good information from this site has helped... but...

I am still experiencing several hard freezes per day, and most annoyingly, sometime (about once every other day) my Windows home screen (the one with the tiles) goes into a frantic strobe-like flashing fit!

It happens when I hit the Chrome button. If it doesn't open Chrome right away, I'll tap it a second time. Then the entire screen will start fluttering on and off. Escape doesn't stop it, but control+alt+delete will.

My mom was on it playing a game on the internet and stepped away to wash dishes when she came back it was on the black screen with the blinking cursor in the top left corner. I tried system repair disc, the recovery disc that it had me make when I first got the laptop and windows defeender offline nothing worked. A:Windows 7 64 bit black screen with flashing cursor?

Unplug all USB devices from your laptop. Restart and see whether the blank screen problem remains.

It is possible that Windows refuses to boot with a USB device such as an external hard drive or a flash drive connected to your computer.

I found out that Update 1 (KB2919355) causes logon screen and lock screen issue.

Custom background for both screens are not displayed, instead of custom background there is a solid black background.

Uninstalling this update rolls back this issue and both screens are displayed correctly. Confirmed on Win 8.1 Pro x64.

I'm gonna report it to Microsoft.

Best regards,

I have the same problem on my laptop.

After the Update 1 my Lock Screen is completely blue and it's not showing the image anymore, I can see the icons but not the pic.

In addition to that, when I choose to reboot the laptop I can only see the loading circle and not the phrase "rebooting".
