Poor Benchmarks GTX970 & i5-4690k

Q: Poor Benchmarks GTX970 & i5-4690k

About four weeks ago I built a new rig and everything was going great. Starting two days ago I noticed I was getting terrible FPS, even in very lightweight games. I decided to download and run some benchmarks, and something is clearly wrong. My system, even with stock clocks, should be getting in the ballpark of 10k in 3Dmark Firestrike; I am getting around 4k with an abysmal physics score.

I rolled the drivers back, completely reinstalled the graphics card, checked the BIOS settings, checked Nvidia control panel, checked the CPU with CPU-Z (all to the best of my amateur knowledge), and nothing seems to stand out as the culprit. Poor performance started around the time of a windows and driver update but I can't say for sure if that is the problem or merely a coincidence. I am at a loss as to what I should do, or even be looking for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

CPU: i5-4690k 3.50GHz (stock clock and cooler for now)
GPU: Asus Strix GTX970 (factory clock)
RAM: 8GB HyperX Savage 1600
MB: MSI Z97-G45
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Below is the average benchmark.

Preferred Solution: Poor Benchmarks GTX970 & i5-4690k

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi all,

I'm running W7 x64 on a new ASUS F81se notebook [Core2Duo P8600, 4Gb DDR2-800 RAM running at 667MHz - don't know why :-(] and ran the Geekbench x32 benchmark and got awful memory bandwidth scores, much worse than on my old Dell Inspiron 6400 [DDR2-667] I just replaced! Here are the stats:

Anyone have any idea why my memory performance might be so poor? Here's some info from SiSoft Sandra 15.96:

Using your bios, you could set the memory to full speed at 800 MHz, if the notebook supports that speed.

I can only say that their skill is terrible , every time I received my computer from the cemter , my computer would have some new ugly scratches and some sign and distorting edge which was apparently caused by improper disassembly operations. A month ago the computer could not boot up , and it was sent in again and they replaced the motherboard . in just a month, it completely  dies now ,  it does not have power at all, the power led indicator does not turn on at all , even if I have tried several confirmed working adapters. hi chaps,
just bought a i5 4690k and would I just be able to do a straight swap with my old i3 4130
the motherboard is a Asrock H81m socket 1150

will I have to change the bios ?

A:i3 4130 for i5 4690k

You need to have BIOS version P1.60 or higher to support the i5-4690K: http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H81M/?cat=CPU
There are no changes that need to be made in the BIOS to switch processors, the BIOS just needs to support it.

Did the CPU you bought come with a new cooler? Do you plan on overclocking it since it's a K model? If so you may want an aftermarket cooler for it as well.

I haven't done any overclocking in the past, but have been fooling around with it today.

I have this i5-4690k at 4.3mhz, voltage is 1.26 Idle at 26c with an H110 cooler. Just wondering if this is OK, I'd like to leave it here.

Ever since I got my parts and built my computer, I had noticed that when i first started playing games, It had been obvious that I wasn't getting the correct amount of frames for what I had bought and built. I really only played two games (Counterstrike and League of Legends) and since it wasn't a huge problem, I didn't try to solve it right away. Just recently, I had bought Overwatch and noticed that even on lowest settings, I would be getting 10-30 frames during fights with a number of people around.

Hey guys,
I am currently trying to get the most out of my processor at this point because I feel like I get poor performance from my games even though my system isn't a horrible set up. However overclocking is just something I have never dabbled in myself so I am looking to the guidance of those who are familiar in it,
I did a bit of reading and installed some programs including cpu-z just to confirm my settings after I tinkered around in my BIOS, I believe I achieved 4.2GHZ I didn't change much in my bios other than setting the frequency to about 4200mhz I didn't adjust the voltage I left it at 1.200 I am uncertain if I should bump it up to 1.3 or just leave it as is.

UPDATE : It was alright until I started playing Titanfall 2 I was able to play for 10 minutes and then a new match for a minute and I got a blank blue screen with nothing on it and I reset everything back to default in BIOS.
My specs are as below :
Windows 10
CPU - I5-4690k
Motherboard - MSI Z97 gaming 5
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 RAM set as a frequency of 1866mhz
MSI R9 390 8GB
750 watt Corsair powersupply
Thanks in advance.

A:How to Overclock i5-4690k properly

OC'ing a CPU is not an exact science.....as everyone's hardware is different. When OC'ing a CPU.....the first and foremost piece of hardware is a top of the line CPU cooler. Otherwise you risk damaging the CPU. Your Evo 212 is a great aftermarket cooler, I have one on my setup, it isn't really designed for OC'ing. For Air cooled OC'ing you need to look at Nactua otherwise you need to start looking at a AIO water cooled CPU cooler.

As for OC'ing....since you have a MSI mobo, you should look at using Afterburner, which is an MSI product. This will give you the basic intro for OC'ing. It also has some tutorials you can look at.

A few days ago I put together a tower for my son with an Asus Z97 pro motherboard and the GTX970 graphics card.
We have it connected to a tv via hdmi until my son can get himself a monitor.
Our issue is that 1 minute I turn the tower on and everything is working fine.
The next time I turn tower on the tower itself lights up but we have no picture.
The graphics card driver is up to date.
I have tried with different hdmi leads also.
Hoping someone could please assist me.

A:Help with GTX970

This begs the question Shane mate is the TV ok?? and even more obvious - sorry but have to ask have you got a dedicated AV channel picked out on the TV?

I would suggest reseating the GPU too and perhaps even this
Now as for the slots to clean them use a strip of old credit card about 1/2 inch wide nip the corners off one end - preferably round them offhold a piece of thin lint free cloth over the end dab on some form of alcohol - iso propyl alcohol (what we swab the skin with before an injection) is good and GENTLY swipe along the slots.
This can also be done for the GPU slot/s and do not forget to clean the contacts on the cards / sticks either.
It is an idea to clean the contacts on the sticks / cards while you are at it but be VERY gentle when doing this.

The next thing to look at is this
UsingHW Info PSU

Download HW Info and pick the right bit version - HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download -(copyand paste this site into the search bar) If you do not need the runninginformation in the smaller right hand panel close it. In the left hand windowclick on the + for the individual device groupings and they will open out tothe various components.

Go on opening out further until you get to the device itself. click on it andit will highlight. In the right hand window there will be a very detaileddescription of that device as in brand, speeds model number etc etc These arevery detailed and are just what is needed for searching for drivers etc.

Hello boombozx, i bought the H50-50 (my girlfriend)And i was wondering if you successfully upgraded.I instructed her to get this pc, with a 650w psu and EVGA'S GTX970 SC,Currently i was forced to buy the 24pin to 14 pin adapter from amazon. It was a pain to find out lenovo does not have the industry standard.Well what i was wondering was, if you were successful in upgrading? And if you had any problems. Hardware or software wise.I will probably do the change this friday (December 11 2015)I will try and remember to post my results just incase anyone else has to go through this hassle. My current concern is that the lenovo H50-50 has an PCI-E but it doesnt specify if it is 2.0 or other.I am hoping they didnt go cheap in this area of the motherboard.I did look high and low. But the only answer is PCI-E.Wish me luck, and please.Let me know if you were successful.

I was running two AMD 6870 in SLI with no problems but recently updated to a Asus Strix GTX970.

The same games I was playing with no problems are now constantly crashing (5/10 minutes of gaming) - black screen and windows sounds on background OR just black screen with no sound OR reboot. It works fine doing normal tasks on windows.

At first I though it could be a driver issue, so I uninstalled, I installed again. The issue remained.

My rig:
Asus Z87 Pro
I5 4670k
Kingston 8GB DDR3
Corsair 800W
Windows 10 64bits

During the last crash I got a memory dump (but not during the others, so it may be a coincidence) - attached.

I have installed the Asus GPU Tweak II, ASUS AI Suite 3 and NVIDIA Geforce Experience.

Haven't done any overclocking.

Please help... I'm in desperate mode.

A:Crashes after moving to GTX970

Difficult to guess.

Did you uninstall the AMD drivers completely? I doubt that you'd see an improvement if you ran a driver remover, but it may be worth a try.

I've had that sort of crash in the past due to a conflict with sound card drivers. (That was when I was running a discrete sound card.)

Also, what do you think about this vs. 780?

If you think both options are bad, what would you recommend this current day with a max budget of €400. Without changing motherboards etc.

That is unknown by Dell. The Precision 690 was never tested by Dell with GeForce video card and drivers. We only tested the workstation Nvidia Quadro and AMD FireGL video cards and drivers. It sounds like the GeForce GTX 8800 drivers installed on your system, so maybe the GeForce GTX 970 could work. You are just going to have to try it out. Check the sellers return policy in case it does not work.

Good morning, I recently ordered an Asus GTX 970 Strix and an i7 4790k CPU as well as a water cooling system for the CPU (CORSAIR Hydro Series H100i).

My current specs are as follows (red text is what is being replaced)

CORSAIR XMS3 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500 CPU @ 3.30GHz
P67 Extreme4 Gen3 motherboard
Corsair 850W PSU
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560
My rig is not meeting the demands of the newer PC games when I want to run on high/ultra high settings with all of the tessellation settings and nicer effects turned on.
I may upgrade to a faster ram speed as well as increasing the amount of memory to 12 or 16GB.

The question I'd like to ask is "Am I limiting the new CPU and GPU a lot by not upgrading the motherboard and also how much bottlenecking will occur?". I have about $150.00 US left in my budget for a motherboard if it necessary to upgrade. I'd like to go on and place the order for the parts within the next few days but I can wait and do more research (or just ask questions as I am now, lazy research) and hopefully gain better understanding of this all.

Thanks very much, cheers

A:Upgrade Extreme4 Gen 3 P67 Mobo for GTX970 and i7 4790k?

Your motherboard is designed for the socket LGA 1155 series of Intel processors. The i7 4790k that you ordered is the newest Intel 4th generation of cpus called Haswell. It is a socket LGA 1150 processor and will not work in your current board as per ASRock specs.

Also, 8 gigs is more than enough for gaming. Unless you are doing video rendering and graphics intensive applications you don't need 12 or 16 gigs of RAM

My son was given a laptop for his birthday last year and it has a cracked hinge.
After much research I've learned that this is a very common problem in this laptop. We called customer care center 2 different times and stayed on the phone for at least an hour each time. We were told a box would be sent out for repair. His laptop was still under the 1yr warranty at this time.

Alright hey guys so I have been doing quite a bit of research talked to some friends and other forums and have come to the conclusion that upgrading my gpu will be a good call! Anyways after talking to a few people and a few computer experts I have been suggested to upgrade my gpu to a gtx 970 which I think will be great! The other issue I came across was whether or not the PSU will be able to handle that kind of upgrade. So after looking through some other people's suggestions and seeing what some other people have done that upgraded their xps 8500 I was suggested to go with the EVGA supernova 750B1 750W power supply (PSU) (110-B1-0750-VR) the reason behind this one specifically was that it was quite a bit smaller in length so in tern I would be able to fit it in the tower and thats what other people have used when upgrading their xps 8500. Anyways sorry this is lengthy but I want to make sure this is a good idea, whether or not everything will fit properly, and any other general suggestions thanks!

I tried to play games that used to run fine and they now stutter all the time and get a low FPS. rolling back the driver doesn't help and some fixes worked temporarily but needed to be reapplied every startup but now those don't work. Download the latest driver for your card from here and save it to your desktop or other convenient location. Uninstall your GPU through Device Manager then shut the PC down, remove the power card and remove the card from the PC, then reseat the card and reboot.

I just got a new laptop and was wondering what kinds of benchmarks would be good to make sure it performs as well as it should. I'd like to know how to compare it to similarly configured laptops in games and multimedia applications.

Also, is there a way for me to see the make of RAM I have. I know how to find out the amount, but it never says the manufacturer.

A quick search for laptop benchmark came up with this CNet page. It shows how they benchmark their laptops, and what programs they use to do it. Worth giving a quick read, at least.

To find out the make of your ram, you can run CPU-Z. It's free, you can download it by clicking the link under 'latest version' in the top left corner of that page. When you run it, click the SPD tab, and it will show vendor information, if it's possible to show it for your system. Some RAM manufacturers don't show, I think. Otherwise, you could just open your memory access panel on your laptop, and take the sticks out (while the laptop is off, of course), there should be a sticker or model number or something on them. Put the number into Google and see what comes up. Good luck!

Hello, Everyone I was wondering how do my benchmarks add up if they are strong or weak in performancew for the last few days i was using msi kombuster but with crappy results ussually round 3464 tottal score

This was bugging me for a few days wondering why my card sucks so much im running a hd 5770 now that i discovered a more updated version of msi kombuster these are my new results can someone tell me if good or bad i just did one test not even in full screen next test will be the 1680/1050 full screen im submitting the first three shots and from there i hope to hear some feedback i also couldn't adjust the first resolution it went back to those setting

Thank you in advanced

A:My Benchmarks

Good scores. I have to admit, the 5770 is a better card than the 260 in a lot of ways, but its driver support was so bad that I returned the card out of being sick of it...

Other than that, looks like its doing good.

Long before receiving a P72, I had hoped to have been able to view some benchmark results prior to the purchase decision.  In an effort to begin that discussion here, I ran a couple of benchmark tests using MAXON Cinebench and OTOY OctaneBench on a P72 with these selected specs: Lenovo P72Intel Xeon E-2186M 6 Core ProcessorNvidia Quadro P5200 16 GB17.3? UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) wide gamut display64 GB DDR4 2400 MHz (Non-ECC)2 x 2 TB SSD (Raid 1 Mirrored)2 TB 5400 RPM HDDWindows 10 Pro for Workstations https://www.maxon.net/en/products/cinebench/ https://render.otoy.com/octanebench/ I am posting screenshots of the results based on a fresh, out of the box unit, with no tweaking.  All current Windows updates and Lenovo hardware driver and utility updates are installed, and very little else other than Firefox, X-Rite i1Profiler calibration utility, and the benchmark applications. If you have a P72, feel free to post your own specs and benchmark results for comparison purposes.  To my eyes anyway, some of these scores represent in large part why I chose to give the P72 a try as I was seeking the utility of speed and power over extreme portability.  However, due to no Lenovo sRGB compatibility mode and poor internal speaker placement, I am struggling to justify keeping the unit.  Still, if you're after raw power, and can put up with various workarounds like ditching the Windows OS, using only color managed applications, or relying on ... Geekbench is a free 32 bit benchmark utility (64 bit is a paid version, sry). It gives your PC a numerical score based on a number of factors. It's available for PC's, Mac's and Linux.

You can download the geekbench utility here: Primate Labs Geekbench

Download, run, create a profile and post your benchmarks in this thread.

Here's my geekbench result (total score 4041):

Here's the link to the results online: Geekbench Result Browser: Dell Inc. Dell XPS420

How does your system rate according to geekbench? Some of the fastest systems rate over 10k!

A couple of weeks ago I tried unsuccessfully to install Visual Studio 6 on my XP Home SP2 box. Since then, the performance has been poor. One thing probably has nothing to do with the other but that's when I started to notice that Firefox took 10 to 15 seconds to load and the XP splash screen stayed up longer on a reboot. I've defragmented and run and error check on the hard drive and it has no bad sectors. This evening I downloaded FreshDiagnose and benchmarked the read and write speeds of the hard drive. The read speed is excellent -- over 200 MB/s but the write speed is pathetic -- 3.47 MB/s. This is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320 GB SATA-II drive (the parallel recording technology.)

The CD benchmarks are pretty low too. I have a Memorex 16X DL DVD+-RW but the read speed is 3.67 MB/s.

These are all connected to Gigabyte 965SP motherboard having a Pentium D 3.4 gHz processor. Not overclocked and the temps and fan speeds are within normal ranges.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I have seen postings about computers being slow. Are there any benchmarks that one can use to see if the computer is running as well as expected, given the RAM and the processor speed? Many thanks.

A:Speed benchmarks?

When people say there computer is running slow, they normally mean its running 'slower' than it used to and want to know why. This is normally down to spyware, background processes, fragged harddrive plus any number of things.

As for benchmarking, there are many types Dhrystone, Whetstone, PCMark, plus ones for graphics cards (3D mark), look at the following sites www.futuremark.com and www.sisoftware.net.

However be aware that whole subject of benchmarking is a bit more subjective, the same cpu on a different motherboard will give different benchmarks even though the cpu is clocked the same. So just because your setup doesnt give exactly the same as someone with 'apparently' the same setup, its not worth trying to track down why (all very clever electronic magic)! Oh and benchmarks do not always represent a true real-life performance.

How do I go about improving a CIS score? I'm confused about the benchmarks. Is this just a list of recommended settings?

A:Belarc: CIS Benchmarks?

You'd need to change the settings that are shown as failing. They give a description of each, but don't mention where to change them though.
Many are set using the Local Security Policy tool, or the Group Policy Editor. Neither of which comes with XP Home. You can edit the registry directly to change settings though.

This link lists many of the registry keys that have to be edited directly, and lists the recommended settings.
For XP Home, the Group Policy Settings Reference spreadsheet can be searched for a specific setting to find the key to set in XP Home.

To set File permissions, you need to turn off simple file sharing (Control Panel | Folder Options | View, uncheck Use simple file sharing, last item). For XP Home, you'll need to reboot to safe mode to see the security tab, or download the two reg files from this post of Elvandil's. Be sure to run the undo reg file when done.

These are just recommendations, and are geared more for a business environment rather than a home environment. The Auditing settings for example, forcing users to change passwords, only allowing strong passwords, minimum length, etc, might not be useful at home.

My score has never been higher than 1.88.
