Storage and Backup for Dual Host-Virtual Servers

Q: Storage and Backup for Dual Host-Virtual Servers

I'm looking to set up a couple of VM hosts and am trying to decide how to set up the storage,
Storage Technolgy - I was thinking about SSDs as our current servers have 146gb SAS drives and we don't have space issues, 256gb SSDs would give us room for future expansion. What model of SSDs would be best? I only have experience with Samsung 830s, are there server grade drives we are not heavy usage?
Connectivity/Backup - I'm unsure how best to connect whatever storage I decide on, I'd like to be able to move VMs between the two Hosts to load balance and for redundancy if one host goes down.

I've had a bit of a look into iSCSI as FC is probably out of my budget and it looks like it would help by centralsing all the VMs, backup could be to a secondary iSCSI host. I'm not sure of the performance I'd get though without going to 10gb.

The other option would just be local raid cards with additional slow SATA storage to cross backup the VMs, looking around most VM hosts have live backup utilities that would do the job then if a host failed it would just be a case of moving the VM to the primary storage from the backup and starting it again. (changing the backup to local until the other host comes back up) I could then back the slow storage to portable disks to take off site in case of loss of both hosts or for data recovery.

Preferred Solution: Storage and Backup for Dual Host-Virtual Servers

I recommend downloading and running DRP. It's a recovery tool that has been proven to recover files that most other programs have no luck with. I've even recovered files from freshly formatted or partitioned drives.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/v51TwD. (This link will automatically start a download of DRP that you can save to your computer.)

I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and have installed the Virtual XP mode.  A long time ago Virtual XP was fully running, with access to host resources (drives etc).  But my system underwent some software changes, and then Virtual XP could no longer
access the host resources.  After trying (unsuccessfully) all the tricks found on several forums, I decided to uninstall then reinstall Virtual XP, which I have just done.  But I still can't access host drives.  Here's how Virtual XP is set
Workgroup name is set to the same as my host (confirmed in 'My Computer'/Properties/Name);
Networking 'Adapter 1' set to my host's NIC;  I have assigned a fixed IP address to the Virtual XP (this has worked previously; all devices on my Win7 network have fixed addresses, for good reason).

Integration Features has ticks in the boxes for those host drives I want to access from VXP.
I can successfully ping the host, via name or IP address;  I can successfully ping web sites by name (e.g. 'yahoo.com').  But when I open Windows Explorer and open the 'My Network Places' tree, it opens down to the name of my host workgroup, but
when I click on that workgroup name, after several seconds it pops up an error box saying: "<workgroupname> is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network resource.  <blah blah>.  The service has not been

I just installed windows 8.1 pro on an MSI z97 pc mate motherboard with I5 3.3 ghz processor, 16 gb ddr3 1600 MHz ram, with embedded realtek pcie gbe NIC. I checked and found that hardware virtualization is enabled by default in the BIOS.

I tried to set up a virtual switch using the latest bios and drivers from MSI. I created a virtual switch choosing the external option and the share with host OS option. I then connected to the VM. No network connectivity on VM but host still worked.

I then used autopatcher to update windows 8.1 on the vm. I removed and reinstalled the virtual switch choosing external option and share with host OS option. Same conditions occurred.
And then I installed the latest NIC driver. Same problem - media disconnected.

I tried this process with the latest driver from the realtek website which was a couple years more up to date. I had such high hopes! Same problem.

I then used msconfig to prevent all non-Microsoft services from starting and rebooted. I removed and recreated the switch and I was still hoping for success. Same exact conditions occurred.

These are the conditions that occur whenever an external switch with host os sharing enabled is installed in between all of these troubleshooting steps. It looks exactly the same every time...
The host machine can still access the network but it does so through the virtual switch. Ipconfig /all on the host reveals the following...

I'm really clueless when it comes to these things.
I am trying to host TCP ports but they are unaccessable.
I turned my firewall off (Thanks Jacee) but that didn't make a difference.
I don't have any other Anti-virus programs installed.
Any ideas?

A:Unable to Host Servers

Do you mean you are trying to OPEN TCP ports for incoming connections? You will have to do this at your router. Assign a static IP address in your router to the computer that needs the open ports. Then go to the Port Forwarding section of your router's setup and forward the ports to the static IP address you created.

Download the manual for your router from the manufacturer's website and read the section on Port Forwarding. The manual should give you illustrated examples.

I couldn't decide whether this was a Game problem or a Networking problem, but it seems to be more of a router thing, so I come here.

I have cable internet, 128kbps via a modem. It goes straight into our Cisco Linksys WRT160N wireless router. One cable goes out to my computer, and the rest of them are laptops via the wireless.

I play alot of Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2, and Garry's Mod. This all uses the Steam client to host servers and the like. There is an in game server hosting, meant more for LAN, but usable over internet (instead of a dedicated server). However, I cant get it to host any game at all. It wont appear in the online list, but more importantly, it wont let my friends in. (There is the option to join the server your friend is in, and if you're hosting it, it should connect you. Instead it says that the server isn't responding)

I've tried some basic port forwarding, but it doesn't seem to work. Me and my friend can connect to servers, but outside of LAN, neither of us can host. No mulitplayer program to my knowledge has been able to host from my computer. As proof it is possible, one of my contacts hosts a server during the summer off his computer with no special setup.

Thanks in Advance,

I have had a normal experience up until a couple months ago i noticed that i couldnt run Portal 2 Multiplayer test chambers with my friend. At that time i did not know it but now i realize that mustve been when it started.

I have hosted servers on games for as long as i can remember, as i have always been able to port forward. Since that Portal 2 incident i had a bad streak of multiplayer games that i thought had just ceased to work.

1) Tried playing Anno 2070 with ports forwarded, Friend's connection timed out. Disregarded due to Anno servers being nerfed,

2) Retried Portal 2, still nothing.

3) Tried hosting a modded Mount and Blade warband server, could not get on. Disregarded because i assumed it was a conflict with the mod.

4) Tried hosting a minecraft server, friends could not connect, Disregarded due to oddness of trying to set up a server.

5) Just bought a new game, World in Conflict. Friend connection would time out. I forwarded all ports still no dice. I was FED UP.

6) Hosted a tried and true Mount and Blade Native server. This time. IT DID NOT WORK

I do not know why anything has changed but it was then that i realized that something was wrong and i was not able to host ANYTHING.

I checked my IPv4 and it has stayed the same. All ports are forwarded correctly, firewall has not changed. Why am i no longer to do anything. I went on a port checker and it said any port i had previously opened was now closed.

I dont know if it said that due ... Read more

I posted this in e-mails, but it probably better belongs here since the question relates to security.

Probably a hugely basic question, but while setting up some new addresses I've just figured out that my (Irish) hosting provider doesn't run SSL on their pop e-mail servers.

Guess I'm wondering just how much of a risk this might represent. I'm not so worried about the data in the mails (I don't send sensitive information), but I'd rather not find that I was being used to send spam or worse.

I'm on Mac Mail right now - but hope to switch to a notebook running Win 10 Prof in the coming week or so which might be a different scene. Mail pretty clearly regards SSL as more or less standard - it goes through a routine to get an OK to continue without it.

The Mac Mail has been consistently glitchy over the years - with mailboxes getting corrupted and having to be rebuilt, folders disappearing, and counters showing crazy numbers.

The latter somehow was sorted immediately after running the recenty installed Kaspersky internet security, and previously (for short periods only) following clean installs of the OS - which has tended to make me suspicious that I maybe had company. The local Mac service place has always poo pooed the possibility however.....

I want to set up a simple backup network between my two file servers using only a crossover cable and two additional NIC's.

Both servers (win2003 server) also acts as DC's and DNS/DHCP servers for all other PC's connected to the network through a switch.

I want to be able to backup data between the servers without disturbing the other PC's in the network.

How do I configure the additional NIC's to be able to do this? I have tried a lot, and have come this far:
- They need to have fixed IP's
- No gateway
- No DNS servers
- No registration in DNS
- The metric needs to be set manually

But it doesn't work.......
- Do I need to set the binding? How?
- Do I need to use netbeui for the backup network? How?
- How do I get one server to backup to a disk on the other server over the "backup network" while at the same time being able to see the other computers through the switch?

I am running Mac OSx through virtualization using VirtualBox. I have a bunch of stuff on there that I don't have on my main OS, Windows 7. I was wondering if there was a way to be able to access it on windows without opening the virtual mac, or without downloading it separately on the windows. Because everything is still on this hard drive, so can't I just search for it in windows and be able to find it? It's not that big of a deal for now since its just mainly pictures and music, which I can easily get on Windows in the first place. But I was thinking about putting some movies and bigger sized files on OSx and I just started wondering if I would be able to get them on the windows.

Anyways, like I said it's not that big of a deal if I can't. I just want to know if it's possible.

And just to quickly re-explain my little situation just incase you got confused. My computer runs Windows 7. And through a program I download called VirtualBox, I can boot into Mac OSx through virtualization. I creaded a virtual hard drive and gave it like 120 gigs out of my 600 gig hard drive.

Just recently, I've had four PC's fail their backups (Windows 7 backup) with a 0x800704B3 error when trying to save the backup to a networked file server. Only two of the machines have a common server, the other two are elsewhere.

I just noticed, since they normally backup on the weekend. Reconfiguring the backup doesn't work, nor does re-running the backup. Windows Backup reports that the location, or user details are invalid, or that the server cannot be found. In all cases I can use Windows Explorer and navigate right to the actual servers, and I can look at, edit, or copy files - Yet Backup can't access the server, even though it shows up as a valid backup device.

Has anyone else had this problem? A busted recent update maybe?

I am new here, have been "lurking" for a week or so, & have been overwhelmed with the amount of information on here! I have been searching for an answer to this problem for awhile now, & have never been able to get to the bottom of it. Forgive if this has been covered before, but I could not find any reference to it by searching.
Well, I have this friend (no really) :D that has a recuring problem. 160 GB HD partitioned 4 ways; He keeps the video on the last partition, (F drive) which is 60 GB. The issue is that when this partition gets nearly full of video, he gets a "virtual memory" error.
If he deletes/moves video off of this part., making more room on it, the error goes away.

Sys. restore is only turned on for the "C" drive. I don't understand what is going on here, since the partition is basically just a storage area. Why would there be a virtual memory problem on just a storage drive, if the paging file is on "C"? The "C" drive is kept fairly clean, not maxed out. Any ideas on this one?

Thanks in advance,

A:Virtual Memory Issue - Too Much On Storage Drive?

I suspect what is happening is that there isn't sufficient free space on the F drive to perform operations with files (especially large ones).

Windows needs free space on the drive to manipulate files - and it's generally recommended that there be at least 15% free space on each drive to ensure that this doesn't happen (9 gB free in your friend's case).

But, since this is a generalization, you may even require more free space when working with very large files (such as videos).

I've seen hard drives so full that files couldn't be deleted. This required that the owner search the hard drive and order the search results by size - then start by deleting the smallest files first and working all the way up to the bigger files - a genuine, 4 square PITA!

I have an old program that will run on XP but not Win 7 Pro and I am using Windows Virtual PC on my laptop to run it. It works fine but I cannot access files (share drives) from the main hard drive, i.e., the Win 7 file structure. I can work with the VM XP file structure but not the main files. I am able to access flash drives from the VM and so I can move the files around this way but it is very cumbersome. This machine is not on any sort of network. I have done the same thing on my desktop and have exactly the same problem (it operates on Win 7 Pro as well). Security is not a concern; I am the only user of these machines.

I have read what I can find about this and tried resetting all kinds of "sharing" permissions, including sharing just a folder instead of the entire drive, enabling sharing from both the Win 7 side and the VM XP side, etc. I've tried everything I can but to no avail.

Can anyone offer some ideas and/or direct me to a thorough discussion of this issue? Thanks in advance.

I have found Acronis Trueimage to be the easiest and most user-friendly.

If you purchase a Seagate, WD or Maxtor, you can get the Acronis Trueimage software (free) and make an image of your OS and

put it on your external hdd. Don't forget to click "verify" in options.

If you need to recover your OS ( including programs, updates, etc) you can do it with a few clicks.

You can also use Easeus for free and any hdd will work.

Also, make a boot CD -you can start the program from Start Menu, but in case of a catastrophic failure and you can't boot, the CD will open your saved image and you will recover your OS in minutes.

I have come across a Hypervisor issue on Windows 8 which seems not to be described yet.

Suddenly the Windows 8 Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service is not starting automatically anymore after an computer restart.
Also manually starting the Hyper-V manager service from the Hyper-V Manger Console ends up in the following error:
The Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service terminated with the following error:
Not enough storage is available to complete this operation.

This belongs to the following Windows 8 System event error:
Log Name:      System
Source:        Service Control Manager
Event ID:      7023
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Keywords:      Classic
The Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service terminated with the following error:
Not enough storage is available to complete this operation.

Reinstalling the Hyper-V feature is not solving this issue.
Although the event description relates this issue due to local storage issues in my case it was not related to any storage shortage at all but due to file corruption on the system drive.

System configuration:
Windows 8 Enterprise with Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service version (VMMS.EXE ) 6.2.9200.16384.

Root cause:
After analyzing the system log I did found al record wich is pointing to file corruption in the Hyper-V Snapshot cache:

I'm running Win7 on my Lenovo T400. I use a wireless router and a LinkSys NAS200 network storage. I'm having a hard time trying to set up backup on the net storage. It worked fine with my XP laptop. I can access the files on the net storage using my browser, so it appears that the network is working, but I haven't been able to map a network drive, and the Win7 backup can't find it.

Any help?

Did the LinkSys NAS200 come with an install CD/DVd to map drives & setup a backup program ?

Hi everyone!

I have been a faithful user of Norton products for years (despite some problems I and others have had) as I like some aspects of their products which I could not find elsewhere (*see below for what I need).

I have used Norton Ghost 15 on Windows 7 Professional since I got it in 2010 (hopefully my system info was attached to the bottom of my post like the others here--its been a while since I needed help). Suddenly, (last year!) it vanished from all locations on the Computer. I don't know why, the site of course is closed down as Norton does not sell it anymore, I could not make a copy of it as it was purchased from their online store. I thought I downloaded a file to save when I got it, but searches of computer files everywhere come up empty... the link on the desktop I always used says it goes nowhere.

Of course Norton is not helpful as they have a new product SSR (see Link at end of this question for data sheet) which does a lot more than just Norton Ghost, and according to their website I have to remove all traces of Norton Ghost before installing it (might be a problem in future if the computer can no longer locate any remaining pieces of Norton Ghost 15 to remove, the SSR might not work, but I'm getting ahead of myself here.)

Purpose of this post:

I would like to find a different backup/restore program which works successfully, without failing, on Windows 7 x64 Professional and wondering if anyone here has any favorites.

I am trying to use the Vista BackUp and restore utility to store my important files on a machine attached to the network.
I need to enter a username, with null password to access this drive.
I can happily browse the network drive using Windows Explorer, and am able to copy files both ways.
When I try to use the Backup And Restore utility, I am prompted to enter a username and password. IF I enter the username and null password I use in Explorer, I am told that I need to enter a Username And Password. If I enter a password, I am told it is incorrect.

Is there a way of telling Windows that I HAVE entered the username and correct (null) password?

A:Backup to network storage

For scheduled tasks, and perhaps other tasks with Vista, you need a password on the account in question. Why not just create a password for the resource?

My current external hard drive is falling apart and I'm going to purchase a new piece of hardware. What do people use to store their backups? I've been considering:

external hard drive
internal hard drive
internal hard drive with an external case
USB flash memory
Blu-ray burner and rewritable disks (just an idea)
For an external hard drive I've been looking at USB 3 interfaces but most of them have disks doing 5400rpm. How come external hard drive disks have a slow rpm and is it a problem?

A:What do people use for backup storage?

Depends on how important the data is and how much data you are backing up. I would not use the Blu-ray discs (too expensive) or the USB Flash drive (not much capacity for the price). The internal drive will involve a little more work to install, although the transfer speeds higher and the cost will be lower. The external drive and the internal drive in an external case (basically the same thing, only thing that will vary is cost) is the most convenient method. It will be the easiest to restore to another pc.

As far as the rpm, the difference between 5400 and 7200 rpm probably will not affect you much since it is just for backups. The average seek time between these two speeds is only about 1ms different. So unless you are backing up massive amounts of data, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

For the last year or so I used the following as my backup strategy in case of fire/water damage: take weekly backups on a slim portable drive that I lock up in water and fire proof safe.

I'm starting to think of leveraging technology and putting the whole backup on auto-pilot, so I had the idea of using the following strategy:

1) Daily incremental backups of entire system on external hard drive that's always hooked up to the computer (and not protected from disaster)
2) Daily incremental backups of important files only (<10GB) on online storage

Any thoughts on this strategy? What solutions do I have available?
I'm thinking:

1) Acronis True Image online backup - 25 GB for $5/month; apparently should be pretty easy to use.
2) Some kind of cloud storage that I can just map as a drive and do incremental backups to it.
3) Other?

I have 3 drives in my system,
64gb boot Health System Active
640g Apps Health Primary 376gfree
500g storage Healthy Primary 496gfree

I'm trying to a backup with a system image,
It says for the storage drive when selected that it will not do a system image.
But when I select the 640, it doesnt say it wont, but will not let me choose any files from that drive.

Not sure what is going on,
thanks for any help.

A:Cant select storage drive for backup.

Please clarify:

Are those 3 separate drives, each with one partition?

Or is this all one drive containing 3 partitions?

Are you trying to make an image of just the 64 g partition?

An image file cannot be stored on the source partition.

What application are you using to make the image?

I had an issue where connecting a printer to my PC caused a short circuit somewhere that popped the fuse on my power strip and ruined the printer. The PC shutdown but I was able to boot up fine due to safe guards in my motherboard. However of all my hard drives the one that I keep my backup and all of my photos, music and writings on was listed as Drive D instead of it's Former Drive E. I have used free trial software to confirm all of my 1300 GB of missing Data is in the unallocated partition of the same size. How do I make this available to me again without spending money?

Lately, I'm using many different services (as long as they're safe) to store everything I can online to get my laptop and somehow my house, well lighter. I am quite sure I'm not the only one, but I'm curious to know what do you use to backup your data.
Here's my list of my favourite ones so far:
evernote but mostly as a bookmark tool
dropbox, googledrive and skydrive for photos, docs or work stuff
unioncy recenlty found, where I moved my products documentation like warranties and receipts
Any suggestion? Do you use something different I can try out?

My brand new laptop HP Pavilion dv9208 already has a storeage problem. The D drive has 6.59 GB of storeage space but ihas already used up 95% of it leaving me only 627MB of space left. Not even enough to do a backup. The space is being used up by the HP recovery. I did make a recovery disc. When I look at the D Drive properties I see that the "compress this drive to save disc space" box is not checked. My question; should I compress this drive? Will it really help save space and if not can I un-compress it? I've never messed with the D Drive before because I've always thought it was hallowed ground. Any suggestions/advice. Thanks in advance

A:D Drive Storage/backup Problem

Do Not, I repeat do not mess with the D drive on the HP this is your recovery partition, and contains the first back up of all your original software. the second back up is on the disks that you made. There should be an instruction phamplet that came with the laptop on how to use this partition.

Hello all (again)

This has been driving me crazy. After spending about 4 hours trying to get it to work, Vista refuses to back up my computer. I keep getting this box:
I have done all I know how to do, including creating a partition bigger than the one my OS is housed on (500gbs) and it is still not big enough apparently. The Seven backup worked amazingly, but Vista seems to not like it.

Any suggestions? I believe I need to reset the size of the Shadow Copy or something, but VSSAdmin did not recognize the partition....

A:Backup - Insufficient Storage (0x8004231F)

Hi David,

Just an idea but could this be more to do with the free space you have on the drive you are backing up from, (where the temp files are built), rather than the space on the drive you are backing up to.

Just an idea - I've had the same sort of error but only when the backup drive is almost full

not sure if this may help ...

Hi all,

please bear with me on this, it may be long, but i'd really appreciate some input from the more experienced gurus on this.

As I.T. Manager in our company i have to put a Disaster Recvoery Plan in action for the I.T.

Currently we have an LTO tape drive in a Dell tower server which backups up 500gb fully once per week (takes 4 tapes and 3 days), with weekday incrementals after that (takes 1 tape), all across the whole system of 4 servers.
Now, here are the options (loosely) that i'm thinking of;

1. Install an autoloader with 8 or 16 tapes so that backup doesn't take 3 days due to manual loading of tapes. Take tapes off-site.
Pros: cheaper, faster. Cons: not as reliable imho.

2. Install NAS or SAN box to hold all data. Create wireless bridge (100Mbit) to our other site 200 yards away. Use some appropriate synchronsing software that will on its first run, probably take a weekend to sync. all the data across to the other site, and from then on, should be just nightly sync'ing of the data changes during that day.
This could also work in reverse for the other unit, so that their data is store off-site too.
Pros: more reliable? less human interaction to screw it up. Cons: Price

Ok, so does anyone have any opinions on the 2 options i'm exploring?
Personally i like the sound of option 2, so can anyone recommend an appropriate program to sync the data the way i want it?
Do you have any other options to put forward?

A:Data backup/storage solution for DRP

Filesystem synchronisation is not that good of an idea.. What if the synchronisation happens after disaster has struck and good data on the "backup" gets overwritten? You need to have several copies of backed up data at any point in time.

I would recommend - daily incrementals and weekly full backups to disk. Either a plain single huge SATA drive or some sort of an array (you can go up to monster standalone SCSI RAID enclosures here) depending on your desire for speed and/or redundancy. Backup to disk is fast and (selective) restore is amazingly fast. You can use filesystem synchronisation or backup software - doesn't matter.

Copy the backup disk contents to tape at any suitable time for offsite keeping or archival. Still needs an autoloader or a library for that I suppose...

If you are interested in disastoer recovery and archival is not necessary at all, then you can foget about tape completely. Just make several copies of the backup disk(s) whenever you feel like it.
