Q: Best repeater to improve Virgin media Superhub Wifi

hello everyone

i have a weak wifi signal all around the house and i was wondering what is the best repeater that would work with virgin media's superhub

thank you

Preferred Solution: Best repeater to improve Virgin media Superhub Wifi

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Recently, after many years of 'normal router' had superhub installed by Virgin - supposed to be speed of 60. The engineer told us -give it a couple of hours... well here we are 3 weeks later, numerous speed tests at all sorts of times day/evening, getting a speed of about 7 no more than 13.

Emails lock up, which has never happened before and the whole system is worse than on the old router. Called engineer who after ages on phone, remotely controlling my computer came to the conclusion that we have spyware on our computer and that is the reason we are not getting the speed!!!

Now I am hopeless with computer speak and anything technological, but even I find it hard to believe that this would be the case. We have Microsoft Security Essentials on and I thought that had the defender for spyware built in.

Can any one shine any light on this problem - are they 'fobbing' us off or could spyware cause this?

Thank you for your help - Lisa

Our Internet stopped working, and from the lights on the old router (Belkin wireless N, Internet button was flashing orange) it was an Internet problem, nothing to do with us, but nothing we or person on the phone at virgin did got it to work. So engineer came out yesterday and installed the Superhub thing (which I hear is what they install as standard now) replacing the old router and the old modem. Anyway now it seems slower, the PC I have in my room upstairs which connects wirelessly to the Internet is now only showing speeds of between 65-72 mbps, whereas before I was getting 150mbps all the time. Also when playing the Xbox 360 I seem to get a bit more lag than usual. Is there anyway to say boost the signal or make it better, just seems odd that a 5 year old modem and year old router gives out slower speeds than a new superhub router.

A:New Virgin Media Superhub slower than previous router

My superHub was delivered on Friday but i might not connect it now after reading this.

Until yesterday I had a Virgin cable modem for my broadband connection, as it only had one Cat5 output I ran it into a Buffalo WHR-G300N Air Station router in order to run the 2 PC's one Win7 OS, one WinXP OS and another cable which goes to my TV on my home network.
As I have just upgraded my broadband to 30Mb Virgin Media sent me a new hub ( Virgin Superhub) This hub has 4 Cat5 ports and I suppose I could disconnect the Air Station and run my 4 cables from the new Virgin hub but wanted to ask whether there is any reason to do this or not?. What I mean is, does either or both of these items give me any added security?. My PC is protected by Comodo CIS

A:Virgin Superhub and Buffalo Air Station Query?.

Problem solved. As a default the virgin superhub installs as a router but after opening up the admin menu I had the option to reset it as a cable modem and again use my own router. At the time I wrote the op I had internet access on this pc but found out later on I had no access to my network as the default install stopped my router from working. Anyway it is fine now just to let anyone else interested know the solution.

Based on an article on the 'Lifehacker' website I noticed an article on how to use an old router as a repeater. I was looking at eBay and noticed something called, "Wireless-N WiFi Repeater Router Signal Range Extender Amplifier 300Mbps" which appears very small, and is just inserted in your USB port of your laptop.
This begged the question: At US$ 13 with shipping included perhaps it is better to buy this as opposed to converting my old ''D-link DIR-300" in a repeater, especially if doing so is a real hassle.
Hence trusting you guys here I thought I'd ask you if you think there are advantages and disadvantages with one or the other.
For ex. a disdvantage to using my old router as a repeater is that it's not portable
an advantage (sort of) is it's free
the eBay one at this price range seems to have 2 different models of brands unknown to me--China
-1- VOnets and -2- LB-Liink (seems to be imitating the 'D-Link' logo)
[This 2nd 1 seems to come in 2 slightly different definitions 'USB Wifi Router AP Wireless N repeater Adapter WLAN Range Extender F' or 'USB Wireless WLAN WiFi Router AP Client Repeater Adapter SY']
You opinion is valued. Thanks :-)

I'm having problems with my wifi repeater (I think)..
I have a laptop downstairs that is plugged into the router and then upstairs I have a wifi repeater and a laptop that is working off that signal.. My problem is that the internet doesn't seem to work on my tablet or iPhone unless my laptop upstairs is turned on. It will connect no problem but it won't actually work. Also if I have other people here they cannot connect to the wifi unless my laptop upstairs is turned on (sometimes not even then) .. If I am connected and then turn off my laptop then the internet on my mobile devices stop working. I have no idea what is going on and neither does anyone else so would appreciate any help.

I have a Virgin Media 'Super' Hub that allows me to reach up to 50mbps. In the first year of owning it, it performed excellently and I had no complaints whatsoever. For the past 2 years, however, I have had frequent yet inconsistent fluctuations that either reduce my speed to the point where youtube videos will only buffer at 144p, or it will disconnect me entirely. Ping also rises, averaging somewhere between 200ms and 750ms during these fluctuations.

I have called, emailed and web chatted with Virgin to resolve this issue, and every single time, they tell me they'll run some tests, restart the router remotely and it should be fine. That response has been given to me countless times and my internet is never fixed, I never get what I pay for.

My laptop is located a floor above the router and it is connected via wireless. I never expected to reach the full 50mbps or even come close to it, but these fluctuations are not acceptable. I average around 20mbps, which is fine since I don't download that many large files.

Last week, I decided enough was enough and made another phone call to Virgin Media's stellar customer support line. This time, I requested to buy a wifi extender, so my wifi could reach my laptop a little better and hopefully reduce fluctuations. I waited for the Netgear Powerline package to arrive and then set it up. Virgin gave me this device to plug into a socket next to my router and this device to plug into a socket in my room.

I will try to keep a long story short but please ask me to clarify anything that might not make sense.

In November Virgin Media lied to me and told me my old Modem no longer worked and needed replacing. This was a Lie because they kept cutting it off at 00:45am GMT which coincidentally is the same exact time the internet is cut off if you miss your monthly payment. They replaced it with a Virgin Media Hub 3.0. There are court cases in America because this Router has serious performance issues and a faulty chipset that has been patched but still performs woefully ? especially in regards to latency.

I had to switch to 2.5gz on the router for anything like normal internet speed and over December things have been usable. Gaming is not an option but my DL and UL speeds have been usable if not good. However today I am suffering huge delays on web pages opening up. Internet speed tests are failing to even contact servers. I have managed to take 3 readings, one from the wired pc downstairs next to the router, one from my upstairs bedroom Android box and one from my wireless adapter connected PC (WNDA3100v3).

The android box is unusable for last few days. The PC is struggling to connect to servers for speed tests. It?s hanging all the time or page loading. Strangely I AM able to watch youtube videos in 1080hd ONCE the thing has loaded. It?s as if the Router can?t allocate to devices properly.

Can anyone offer some advice? Virgin have not even replied to my complain... Read more

I have an update, I shut all devices off and unplugged the router, turned all back on and the router downloaded an update. It seems Virgin loves to just force their **** upon you with no regard whatsoever. I still can't game properly with 50ms pings but at least I can surf internet again... until the next 'update'.

I will leave this thread open until tomorrow in case anyone would like to add something. I am a little embarrassed to have posted before the unplugging
Still fuming a full month or more after the enforced upgrade that is, in reality, a downgrade and has left me with half the service I used to have and a whole lot of games and gaming equipment that is near on useless.

First of all, I am new to this community, so I appologise if this thread is in the wrong place.

The last few weeks, I have been having many problems with their services.

I try to play call of duty 4, and all I get is constant lag, connection interuppted etc, I phoned them up told them what was going on, and they said nothing was wrong with it what so ever. I have unplugged my modem for 20 minutes, restarted my router etc etc.. and still it lags.

At this moment in time I am getting really annoyed, and want something done about it. There is obviously something wrong.

So basically, from the point I turn my computer on, the internet lags, It's sometimes slow to bring up internet pages and I get around 30-999 ping on CoD4 servers (Including my own).

Sometimes the download speed is fine, 250kbs depending where I download from, is the max I usually get and from what I have downloaded recently I always get 200ish.

If anyone has any ideas on what is going on and any possible fixes, I would be very grateful if you could post them up.

Many thanks,

Hey all,

Can someone school me please? I have a switch box upstairs with my cable modem and a wifi router. Downstairs I have a PC that is hardwired to the wifi router. My PC has a WIFI N PCI card installed into it (was forced to use wireless connection until I had a cat 5 jack dropped). My question is, can I make the WIFI card in my PC act as a repeater to the WIFI router upstairs? Reason I ask, the WIFI router upstairs doesn't get great coverage all over my house and if possible, I would like to make my PC repeat the WIFI signal.

Can that be done easily?

A:PCI WIFI card as repeater?

On paper, it can be done with some heavy modification. The wireless card would need two create two independent connections (one from the router to the pc, and a second from the pc to the next device). Since 99% of cards do not do that out of the box (and I am not certain any can be made to do that), I don't think it's possible.

I promise you it is much easier to buy a wireless ap/bridge for around $50-100 US. I have the D-Link DAP-1522 and it works like a beastly charm as both a repeater or a bridge. I have a TrendNet TEW-639GR wireless router working with a EnGenius ERB9250 Wireless repeater. They seem to be working together but I have some questions regarding the setup.

1) Both are using the same channel, is this correct? They show up as two separate signals on a WiFi scanner with the same name, on the same channel, with two separate mac addresses.

2) How do I force my portable devices to connect to the repeater rather than the router? When I go to the Windows 7 "connect" page I see only one network choice (because they are sharing the same name). Sometimes the portable devices will connect to the router other times they will connect to the repeater.

Hey everyone.

I used to have an old wifi but it's that old the software I used to use to set it up doesn't even run under 7. This isn't really my problem though since I was pretty sure I'd have to update anyway. It's unlikely it would be able to repeat a signal from an N router let alone use anything better then WEP.

Anyway. I was looking for suggestions on getting a good repeater. I saw this one: Best Wireless Repeater | Wifi Repeaters Boosters and Range Extenders which looks pretty good. I've never used anything from Amped before though so I'm kind of tempted to go for a Netgear or something instead.

I was also considering buying a router and setting DD-WRT up but I don't know how they compare?

Cheers for any advice.

So I bought a wifi repeater to use in my upstairs for my tablet (Amazon Fire). I hoped it would be an easy setup, and surprisingly it was. The problem is that a set amount of time after initial setup (difficult to know how long since I only use it at night) I am unable to connect my tablet to the repeater. It automatically disconnects and when I try to reconnect I get the message "connection failed" over and over again. I have tried a few manual setups on my tablet, not having the slightest idea what I was doing, and naturally that didn't work. The only way to get it to work again is to go through the setup again, but inevitably my tablet disconnects and cannot reconnect.

I am using a CenturyLink router/wifi combo thing for my internet. The wifi booster is just an off-brand thing I got off Amazon.

What other information can I provide that would be helpful? I tried to look up solutions, but though this seems a common problem there doesn't seem to be a common solution. At least not one written in English for someone like myself with no computer savvy at all.

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Hi Everyone,
I'm trying to help a friend implement some technology for a working apple farm. They are using a linksys WRT54G router with a cable modem, the wifi in the main building works great. We want to extend the wireless signal to a warehouse about 1/4 mile away, we have line of sight. We've been referring to a book; "Wi-Fi Toys" by Mike Outmesguine. The book refers to both bridging and repeating, but the configuration of each is not clear to me. They've purchased long range directional antenna's and two linksys WAP54G's to be used as the downlink and access point. I've tried to configure them (referring to the book and the linksys website) as wireless repeaters and wireless bridges but I've had no luck. Has anyone set this up before (?), I'd really appreciate any coaching you can provide.
Thank you,

I was thinking about this the other night. If it's dumb question I'm sure that everyone will rush to helpfully point this out, but can't you make a repeater out of two WiFi routers?

If a distant wireless Internet AP is out of range of part of your network and you can't move the access point, can't you take a router located just within range, configure it to client mode on the AP's channel (say 11), then run an ethernet cable from its output to the "Internet in" port (or perhaps one of the switched ports, I'm not sure) of a _second_ router configured as an AP on a different channel (say 6) and then have that router be the Internet access point serving your more remote wireless computers?

Just asking here; as a thought problem, it's been nagging at me so badly I was preparing to go buy more routers simply to test it out, but I thought I'd save some money and ask here first. Thanks for any clarification and help.

Hi if this is the wrong forum please advise so I can redirect.
I have just changed to virgin broadband from orange [ freeserve]. this means I have gone from a phone line to a cable supplied email service.
when I was with orange I could send and receive emails via my domain service provider ie email account was set to pop.***studio.co.uk and smpt.freeserve.co.uk and
for freeserve mail pop.freeserve.co.uk smpt.freeserve.co.uk

now with virgin I can receive from the above pop settings but the smpt understandably has to be set as smpt.virginmedia.com
that makes sence but what does not is that emails sent all arrive at there distination as have been sent by ******@verginmedia .com not from ****studio ect ect
this is because i have had to set the outgoing server settings to my outgoing server requires authentication and log on as ****@virginmedi.com and log on using spa.
this the only way that virgin as smpt will allow mail out and of course the mail arrives as from virginmedia not freeserve or ***studio.co.uk
if you follow this does anyone know how to set up a email address other than virgin one but send it via virgin??

First off, can she connect directly to the Virgin modem? Did you power cycle the modem when you configured the router?

Let's see this for for any connected machines on that router.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Hi there i am currently trying to connect my new Netgear RP614 v4 to my broadband internet connection provided by Virgin Broadband, however i am experiencing a bit of trouble.

I used the setup disk to set all the hardware up, did this fine with no problems, then it went on to reset the network in order to set everthing else up, and it came up saying that i have a Static IP address, and i needed to enter my IP address, Subnet Mask, default gateway and the DNS Servers, which i dont have a clue what they are or where i can find them.

I then rang virgin and they said the router should just set it up so theres no need to know these details, they said you need to change it to 'DHCP', i also dont know how to do this either.

I would be very grateful if you could help me with this one and tell me once the router is setup on the one computer, how to set it up on another.

Cheers, Luke

I have a Linksys wifi router but it is over on one side of the house. So I also have a d-link repeater nearer the living room. There are two desktop PC, two iPhones, and iPad and a smart tv using the wifi. Most of the time all is well but once every week or two the TV will stop streaming (Netflix or Pandora) and claim it is not connected to the internet. Last evening when that happened I had an iPhone and an iPad in the same room with the TV. The iPad and iPhone also could not connect to the wifi although they saw the SSID.

I unplugged the repeater and left it unplugged and everything got normal again.

The Linksys router and the d-link repeater are using the same SSID and both are on channel 6. Is that an OK setup or should the channels be different?

You can use the same ssid so you can connect to the same name everywhere or you can have a second ssid that way you know which router your connected to. Being on the same channel they can interfere with each other better to have them poles apart

I thought my router had a repeater function, but it does not. I was about to purchase a Netgear extender that is advertised as having a repeater function, but apparently it does not.

I cannot move my "main router" because I cannot relocate my internet connection/modem.

I "think" my only option is to locate a repeater at a midpoint between the cameras and the existing router, thereby creating a stronger signal to the main router.

My questions:
1. By utilizing a repeater, will I eliminate my latency issue.
2. Improve connectivity between software/cameras.

I'm having trouble finding a Netgear Wi-Fi router that has a repeater function at a reasonable price. Can you recommend an affordable router with repeater function or a standalone repeater.

Sorry for the long post...I've been fighting this issue for weeks.

I'm having problems with PC Guard. It was working fine until yesterday, then stopped working when i restarted saying i hadn't used it for 30 days and needed to revalidate. I got it restarted but the same problem each time i restarted. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, but now the installer says it's having problems contacting the server.
I'm running XP and PC Guard is only installed on the one computer. Like i said it's been working fine for the last 4 months.

Used this free back up software but now when I try to access my backup on the web. I get the message that virgin.steek.com does not have valid certification. Havent a clue what this means and the virgin site is no help either. Any one else used this. The other problem is that it has backed up all my partners files with mine although his desktop is password protected and We had no warning this would happen. I did not add him as a user to the application. I stopped the backup when I realised his were down loading but it now runs automatically when the computor is on and has probably continued to back up his files. When I finally get access to it on the web, all his files will be accessible to me. Not what we intended. I can see this might be a huge problem for some couples but it is a minor nuisance for us.

Anyone notice the time in the UK right now? It is 13:04
Not a peek time, peek time is 4pm>12 at night.
I'm being throttled after downloading 2 100MB files from rapidshare at my usual 1.3mb/s speed using rapidshare premium.
Now, I'm getting capped at 300kb/s?!

This is pathetic, is there anyway to force this uncap? I'm ****ing tired of being capped like this..

A:Virgin Media Speed Throttling?!

Hello and welcome.

Virginmedia failed to tell customers of the throttling.

Virginmedia is trying to curb illegal downloads from torrent sites and other sites who possibly share illegal files.

They have also stuck a cap on there customers broadband and again failed to inform there customers.

What happens now depending on what speed you have subscribed to you are now given an allowance of how much you can download.

Once you reach there set download limit your speed is slowed right down to in some cases a 20th of your origonal speed.

This speed is supposed to be slowed like this for around 5 1/2 hours but infact this throttling can be for upto 10 hours.

Your speed will eventualy go back up to your usal speed.

You can ring Virginmedia free on 150 or 151 on any Virginmedia phone and they can explain this new setup for you.

Basicaly there is nothing you can do but to watch the size of files you download and how much you download.

I hope that answers your post?

Ok heres the problem - I have a Netgear WGR614v9 wireless router given by Virgin Media and a Macbook. I used the install disc on my mates XP laptop to set it all up and it was working fine for a few weeks until last night when I came back from work. The wireless just stopped working.

Now then, I've checked, double checked and triple checked the WPA password - I've reset the router and still can't connect. When I goto connect in OSX it asks me for the password, which I enter and it either says 'connection failed' (if using the shortcut at the top) or 'password is incorrect' (if using OS X's assistant).

I've disabled the WPA password from the routers admin page, but it still won't connect to the internet.

Mac OSX shows it's connected and has a strong signal strength, and from the router's admin page I can see that i'm connected to the router, but no internet pages work at all. I know it's not my wireless card in my Macbook because theres an insecure wireless network in my street which i can connect to fine. I can also connect to the internet using the routers ethernet ports. Any help here? (Sorry for the long post, tried to give as much info as I can!)

Ok so after hours of fiddling and deleting files I am finally connected wirelessly, although very unstable.

I get dropped every so often, websites take for ever to load and on speedtest.net i barely reach 100kbps (its a 10mb line).

I tried pinging my router and this is the output:

Macintosh-2:~ Kent$ ping
PING ( 56 data bytes
64 bytes from icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=249.905 ms
64 bytes from icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=133.708 ms
64 bytes from icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=9.913 ms
64 bytes from icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=86.584 ms
--- ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 9.913/120.028/249.905/87.033 ms

When I connect the ethernet wire up, they all drop to less than 1ms... Signal strength is good, I have WPA protection on, OSX is up to date. My friends XP based laptop gets pings <1ms wirelessly also.

I recently moved from Virgin to BT, and now have "Virgin net broadband" and "Wireless manager" as redundant programs on my computer.
"Add/remove programs" does not even see them, and I have tried "Revo uninstaller - hunter mode", which replies that there is no installation package foiund for either program.

Virgin tech support say I can just delete the files, but I am nervous to do this without checking if the "Guys That Know" would recommend such an old fashioned method!

I have just signed up for Virgin Media's Broadband service.

The engineer visited and installed the router etc and all seems to be working really well on my Wife's Laptop which is loaded with XP.

However, my laptop is loaded with Vista and although the laptop can see the router and connect, it will only connect with a Local connection and will not connect with a full connection. As a result I am not able to connect to the Web or sync my E:mail.

I believe this may be down to certain settings on my laptop?? Can anyone help?

The internet connection I am getting is fiber optic 100Mbps Upload & Download. The router is Dlink 850L.

My router is placed in my lounge. I usually sit at a desk with my laptop which is about 6 feet away from the router (in the same room), here I get full signal & my speed is about 40Mbps.
Firstly I'd like to know if there is anything I can do to improve this speed as when I do a speedtest on my desktop PC connected via ethernet cable to the router it is around 90Mbps.
When I move the laptop to the bedroom which is about the same distance but separated by 2 walls the speed goes down to around 10Mbps and WIFI signal changes from full to half full.
How can I strengthen the WIFI signal so I get the same speed & signal anywhere in the house?

I have learn't about 5GHZ signal which my router supports but not my laptop. If I upgrade to 5GHZ on my laptop will this solve the issue of a weak signal & slow speed?

Guys got a problem. Hopefully one of you can point me in the right direction for a solution.

The problem is Mom's house and her Charter Internet, and the House layout. The cable TV/Internet comes into her house on the south side of the house, into the Sun Room.Which is to the right of the garage. So the Connection is smack dab in the middle of the end of the house.

To the north of moms desk, where the internet/cable tv comes in is the next room over is the Utility room with the Hot water heater, furnace and W/D for clothes. To the east of this and still north of the sun room is the kitchen and to the north of those, the bedrooms and back yard.

Now, Her Charter modem has wifi. It works great for the south end of the house. Deck, garage, yard, driveway. But anything past the Kitchen, is almost dead.

Is there something we can do to get a WIFI signal at the NW corner of the house which is the guest bedroom? Do I need a repeater or something? will I need to run any wiring, or anything like that? She wants wifi signal there to cover that part of the house and the back yard.

Any help appreciated..
