Hello
My husband uses Chrome and it is running very slow. Firefox seems unaffected.
I recently wiped my computer after a nasty virus and have been trying out various security systems recently trying to decide what I want to buy. Currently using trial version of Avast. I am guessing that I need to take some of those off and would love any advise to get rid of unnecessary programs. I am looking at you, HP!

Around 2 week ago my computer started getting bsod once a day in random situations. But from the last 3 days it's getting the blue screen several times a day, specially when it boots. The Windows loads, then the bsod comes. After 3 or 4 reboots, the system finally gets stable and I'm not having that random bsod during the day.

All requested files are attached.

I have tried multiple times to install iTunes 8 so that I can sync my iPhone. Each time It attempts installation and then at some point rolls back and gives an error message that it can not install. Try again later. I have tried Using MSCONFIG troubleshoot conflicts in Windows Vista Article HT1275 without any luck. I have tried disabling McAfee Security before attempting to install. I also read the suggestion to go to Services and turn off iTunes, but it is not installed and therefore not in Services.

I really don't know what else to try in order to find the conflict. Any suggestions would really be appreciated.

A:Cannot install iTunes8 on my computer running Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1

Hi. . .

Sorry to hear of your troubles w/ iTunes. I assure you that somehow we'll straighten this out. 3 of my kids have iTunes on Vista and XP systems, so compatibility does not appear to be an issue.

If you don't mind taking 5 - 10 minutes to run a batch script, it will provide me with the information I need to have a deep look in your system and hopefully come up w/ some answers.

Please follow THESE instructions carefully.

Don't run the 2nd step - PERFMON. If I need it, I'll ask for it.

Just to make sure - this is the download link you are using for iTunes -
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Also - do you have a link for the Vista Article HT1275 that you mentioned? Run the batch script first, then see if you can find HT1275.

Zip up the output folder from the script and attach to next post. I'll be here for another hour or so before going into Philadelphia.

Hello all,

I have a Compaq Presario CQ50 laptop with these specs:

Vista Home Premium, 32 bit, SP1
3 GB RAM
AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core RM-70 @ 2.00 GHz

It's been running great for almost a year (I'd sent it in for repairs only once for a cable replacement and when I got it back there were no problems), until recently.

One day my laptop became sluggish; opening files and internet browsers would take a long time, sometimes they'd freeze and not respond for a few seconds. Rebooting was a long process as well, I'd get stuck at the welcome screen for a few minutes, and then my desktop would take a while to load, overall the whole process would last a half hour to an hour, sometimes more.

Anyway I got impatient and decided to reinstall Vista by using the System Recovery from the partition by pressing F11 at startup to restore my laptop to factory settings. But even after that, startups have still been painfully slow and I'm experiencing all the same problems.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Since it's already maxed out with 3GB of RAM, about the only thing you could do is replace the old, s-l-o-w 5,400 RPM HD in it with a SSD.

Greetings. Hoping someone can help with reformatting a Dell Inspiron 1721; 3 GB RAM; 250 GB HDD; Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 1.9 GHz processor; Vista Home Premium 32 bit OS.

Reformatted and clean install of Vista 2 months ago. Afterward, everything worked perfectly until a couple of weeks ago. After automatic updates installed Vista SP2, suddenly Windows Media Center (which I've never used and am not at all familiar with and have no plans to learn it and use it in the future) began opening by itself over and over.

Also, a little window popped up on boot up that said something to the effect that my new hardware needed intalled; however, I have not added any new hardware. Have no idea what it was trying to install.

Also, intermittently, programs I'm using just exit out even though I have not pressed exit. And, the mouse intermittently jumps around by itself or won't respond to the touchpad - - it opens programs, opens the start menu, types gibberish into the 'Start Search' line, closes programs, opens browsers or browser tabs, closes browser tabs, etc, etc, etc.

Also, sometimes an odd looking exit menu appears top left screen in a different resolution than the screen is set at. AND, sometimes, when I'm working, all of a sudden the keys won't type but the computer issues a loud beep every time a key is pressed.

When problems first started, I immediately ran system restore. No change.
Tried another date in system restore. Still no change.
Went through all restore points and... Read more

Hi Sharon.

If your game then so am I.

All the things you stated sound like a possible infection or operating system corruption due to unknown reasons. Although none, or a questionable one, was found. I am in total agreement with Garmanma. Also the fact that the rootkit scan is disabled in AVG causes me some concern.

Seems you already have a pretty good idea how to format the drive and reinstall your OS and drivers....... But would like to take it one step further in this case though. I would like to have you wipe the entire hard drive to zeroes prior to formatting and installing the OS. This would include what is called the MBR = Master Boot Record, the partition the OS is on as well as the restore partition. Of course this would leave you only the option of reinstalling via the CD. All pre-installed software will be gone for good. Complete restore CDs are usually available from the OEM for a nominal cost.

The only reason I suggest this manner is, 1)The problems you are describing does somewhat resemble infection symptoms. 2)Depending on the possible infection type a simple reformat may not get rid of it. I have also read that it is possible for the restore partition can become infected as well.

The procedures are really pretty easy, the program(s) to wipe the drive to zeroes is free and we will do our best to get you through the whole procedure as painlessly as possible.

Let me know what you decide.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site so I hope you'll bear with me. About a week ago I began to have sound probs on my laptop. First the sound went in the middle of a game I was playing but came back after I shut it down and restarted. It was shortlived however and ever since I've had that dreaded "no audio output device installed" and that ghastly red circle with the white x next to the sound icon on the taskbar. I think I've googled every site and tried every fix known to man to no avail although yesterday I bought a new mouse and the sound reappeared as if by magic only (you've guessed it) to disappear again. I know this sounds naff but could it have any bearing on a weird message I used to get re the usb ports not recognising a device? Funnily enough since the sound problem appeared that message disappeared! I'm at my wits end now and just about able to curb the urge to throw the lappy out the window....but I don't know how much longer I can hold out. Please can someone help?

About a week ago I noticed that my login for my account did not work. I was able to change the password and everything seemed fine. A few days Ago I noticed a error message saying that Mcafee was not working and it needed to shut down. This persisted every few minutes. Then eventually the microsoft security shield started appeaing on random icons and it started telling me when I started the programs that i had to approve them but in the processs it would just freeze up. My computer is now running terribly slow and each process takes many minutes even with no programs running. Explorer itself gets error message and closes frequently. I am not sure what this is because there are no very obvious signs of a virus besides many progams slowing. I ran malwarebytes as well as rkill but the problem persists. any help? thanks.

My Dell Inspiron 6400 is 13 months old - has Windows Vista Home Basic Edition. My grandson tried to uninstall Vista and replace with XP. It didn't work so I reinstalled Vista HB. A:Clean Install Vista Home Basic On Dell Inspiron 6400

Windows.old is a backup of the old OS (in this case, it's probably the XP installation). I'd suggest exploring it first to see if it contains anything that you want - then delete it to reclaim the space on your system. Also, run a defrag after deleting it so that they system will effectively utilize the space right away.

I had to reinstall Windows 7 Home Premium onto my Dell Studio 1558. I did a clean install, and use the OEM disk that they had sent me previously because I didn't get it with my laptop originally.

When I asked for the Windows 7 Disk, they sent me one for the 32bit version and the 64bit version. Not sure if it matters which I install. But I reformatted the hard drive and did a clean install of Windows 7 32bit Home Premium.

It installed fine no problems. But when looking in the system information, it says that it will automatically be activated in 3 days. Then it says Activate now. I clicked that and got an error that the Product Key I typed in was invalid to activate. I didn't have to type a product key because it's an OEM CD and product key is already set up.

I called Microsoft hoping they could shed some light, they said to call Dell. I call dell, and they said it was already activated. Well if it's already activated then why doesn't it say so? Why is it telling me the Product Key is Invalid for activation?

When I do searches everyone keeps mentioning finding the product key which is stickered to the laptop. I have no stickered product key. It's already apparently set up in the OEM disk. I know Windows 7 activates differently from XP. But if it's telling me that the product key is invalid for activation now, what difference will 3 days make in registering. I guess I'm not understanding something. If it's already pre-activated, shouldn't it show as be... Read more

A:Re-Install of DELL OEM Windows 7 Home Premium

I've never heard of this 'pre-activated' stuff before, but then again I've never heard of OEM activation methods.
Did you buy this laptop directly from Dell? And also, is there any chance you have another Windows 7 disc?
I'm not sure if moving the bios clock forward three days will trick it into thinking it can activate, but I guess it's worth a shot.

Thanks.

A:Dell Inspiron and Vista Home Basic ... Webcam problems

To disable the User Account Controls:
1. Open Control Panel
2. Type in "UAC" in the search box (without the speech marks).
3. Click the link "Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off".
4. On the next screen you should uncheck the box for “Use User Account Control (UAC)”, and then click on the OK button.
5. You’ll need to reboot your computer before the changes take effect.

I need help with my windows vista home premium. It runs terribly.
Its slow. When I click on a program it whirrrs and whirrs.

I can't uninstall anything, it says its either already been deleted or is missing (it's not, it works, I just don't need some of these programs anymore) This happens also if I try to uninstall from Safe Mode.

It says I'm not the administrator when I try to do almost anything but I sign in as administrator. I went to a site that told me I could fix this by going to Computer/Manage/Tools/Local Groups and Users... but Local Groups and Users doesn't exist.

When I go to control panel and try to change any thing under User, nothing will open for me.
I'm not real computer saavy and every site I go to tells me to try something different and I don't know half of what they're talking about.

Is there a downloadable program that can fix these issues?

Thanks!

You can, but you cannot do it from within Vista itself. It must be a 'clean' installation. In other words you have to format and wipe Vista and all your data. This can be achieved using the XP disc during installation.

Have you tried installing Informatica 8 BI with XP compatibly mode?

Ok where do I start....
I have a n Inspiron 1720 core 2 duo.

Since I bought the computer I was never able to update Service pack 1: I will briefly give you a run down on what I went through.

1. Contacted Dell: Updated all drivers on the Laptop and tried a stand alone SP1 install. Result failed blue screen Dell referred me to MS they could not figure it out.

2. Contacted MS after serveral hours of troubleshooting. Result Fail Ms felt that a format of my HD would be the solution. I did not own an external HD so that was not in my options to format.

3. Now I would have hoped MS is aware of everything that can go wrong with Vista. I contact them and I still receive no solutions. I now own an external HD so I format my drive.

4.Vista completes all steps of the installation except the Final Step!! no matter how many times I restart it the process stops at the same spot. I have tried al everything so your suggestions would help a lot. If you require any more info please let me know because Dell wont help me anymore bc my warranty has expired 4 mos ago, and MS is clueless. HEEEELLLLPPPPPPPPP!

Hi Forum,
My HP HDX 18 Laptop running Win Vista Home Premium (64 bit) recently had to have a complete replacement of the main (c) Hard Drive, and, consequently, a full return to
factory settings had to be undertaken. Luckily this was covered by Warranty.
Since then the Laptop would rival a snail in response..programmes hanging, major slowing in shut down and start up times. Prior to this event my Laptop was like a formula one car and greatly efficient. When it was returned to me I removed a lot of the dross programmes that initially came with the machine. The only one left is the Norton anti-virus. Previously I had Microsoft Essentials cover with Malewarebytes additional. I shall revert to this when the trial period expires or maybe before this if this is causing problems.
I have made various setting adjustments as recommended for improved performance. A major one was the Regedit..HKEY-LOCAL-MACHINE/SYSTEM\current control setting\control...reducing the "waittokillservicetimeout" from 20,000 to 10,000.
I am seriously considering ditching the complete Vista system for Windows 7 as the way it
is behaving is the way many people describe Vista. But what puzzles me is how efficient it was before this Hard Drive mishap. I have used Disc Cleanup and cC clean up and Auslogics Defragment and checking for HD errors reveal none.
What is the key thing I need to attend to bring this unit back to pristine condition ?

WU does a cansiderable amount of work, even when downloading - have you ever watched the Network traffic and processor usage at the time? If you have a slow processor (or it's busy doing other things) it will slow the process down. WU is also set as a low priority on download - so if there is any other traffic on your PC, it will take priority.

Problem is a screen freeze. Reinstalled Windows 7 Home Premium on this Dell XPS7100 using the ?factory restore? option for a clean install. Updated all the Dell drivers as recommended by Dell Support. Ran the Windows Updater to download all critical patches until it stopped working. (That?s another problem I?m working on) Now the screen freezes and the only option is to power down and restart. The freeze usually happens after the computer is idle for a short time; so far it had not frozen in the middle of a working session. Any assistance in identifying what is causing the screen to freeze will be appreciated. Something else that may or may not be related: Upon reboot, I occasionally (but not always) get a BSOD with a message that in part says: ?Driver IRQ not less or equal??..? The system almost immediately starts again to reboot, so I have not been able to read all the message. I don?t know if the BSOD is related to the screen freeze since the two do not always occur in tandem. Several crash files from the Minidump folder are attached.

Ok, so here's the story. I'm working on my boss's computer from the store. He is running this config:

Windows Vista Home Premium
eMachines GT5404
Intel Pentium D Processor 915

He said Microsoft Update popped up with 1 important update so he went ahead and updated it. On reboot it started with a black screen and some numbers came up like it was scanning files, and on one of the DLL files it would stop with some 0x000C14F or something error. Rebooted again and it came up with Startup Recovery, so he went ahead and went through with it and let it do it's thing. It came up with an error saying it could not complete because of a bad driver. So he rebooted and it came up with it again. No matter how many times he would reboot it'd want to do start startup recovery. If he would start windows normally the numbers would show, but it'd be a different error and different file each time.

Also, booting into Safe Mode will not work (same thing happens). Last Known Good Configuration does not work due to the same problem. I recommended a clean install after I was able to grab his important files off the HD with SystemRescueCD. However, each time I insert the eMachine's restore CD and click on "Install Now" at the OS install screen, it would go to "Please Wait..." and the mouse icon would turn to an hour glass. Any suggestions on what to do? Thank you!

A:Dell Inspiron Laptop Windows 7 Home Premium Stuck on "Welcome" Screen

Hi aphelocoma,

Please try the following steps to see if they help:

Try to run 'hardware diagnostics' to check 'hardware functionality':
- Power off the laptop > Power it back on; at Dell splash screen repeatedly tap 'F12' > Use 'arrow keys' on the keyboard to highlight 'Diagnostics' and tap 'Enter' > Capture 'error message' if any.
You may refer to the following 'web article' for detailed steps: Run Built-In Diagnostics for Your System

If you still experience issues, try to 'Load BIOS defaults' to see if that works:
- Power off the laptop > Power it back on and at 'Dell splash screen' repeatedly tap 'F2 key' > Tap 'F9' to 'load BIOS defaults' > Tap 'F10' to 'Save and Exit'
Note: Also check the 'hard drive status' in the 'BIOS' (Check if detected)

Please share the exact system model, if no conclusive results show up.

Do reply with the findings; would be glad to assist.

It seems any of the games that Vista is supposed to be able to use such as Battlefield 2142 and Command and Conquer 3 give me an error code bsod x0_000000e3 and then restart the computer. Normally I'd try again but it's not just B2142 now it's C&C3 which is a problem for a gamer like me.

First off what I do is I put the cd/dvd into the drive and then wait for the autorun to come up and click it, usually it takes 2 minutes (means it will BSOD) for them and 3 seconds to autorun anything that isn't going to BSOD.

I'll post my specs in a minute.

Most BSOD's (IME) come from faulty drivers - try updating those first (most suspect would be the motherboard/chipset drivers). Make sure that all your drivers are Vista compatible also.

The error has to do with accesses of the NTFS file system not being done properly - since it primarily comes from your CD-ROM drive you might also want to uninstall your CD-ROM from Device Manager and let Windows re-detect it once you've updated the drivers.

Hi folks a few days ago I installed Service Pack 2 on my laptop, now its stopped working. Windows starts up as normal buit when I click on one of my desktop icons, the little circle thing just keeps going round and around constantly. So, I can't click on my Start menu to shutdown normally, that doesn't respond, haave to unplug power cable and remove battery. Then of course I get the 'Safe' mode options. I tried this, and went into System Restore but the only restore point remaining is the one were the Service Pack was installed, it will rollback to then but it doesn't make any difference. I've also selected the CHKDSK facility in safe mode were you right click hard drive, and use tools then reboot.

My computer is Acer Aspire 9301AWSMi - 17" AMD Turion Laptop

Thanks, hope someone can help.

If it's possible to do so, try uninstalling your antivirus and antimalware apps. You might try uninstalling your firewall, too, if you are using a third-party one. Just for future reference, it is a good idea to uninstall these before any major upgrade (unless you are knowledgable enough to completely disable them).

If that doesn't solve the problem, you should be able to find SP2 in Programs and Features and remove it. Then try reinstalling with your services at default settings and the above-mentioned programs removed.

I have installed Adobe Creative Suite Master Collection on my Windows Vista Home Premium machine. All of the programs work great with the exception of Dreamweaver and Encore. I have tried right clicking and running them as administrator but they both still do the same thing. They begin to open and get to the loading screen but when they get to the point that they are supposed to open they just close.

Any ideas? I really need to get these working.

Thanks.
