I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have had problems recently with IE not being able to back out of links. Something like Doubleclick shows up on the back button history and I am at dead end. I ran a HJT scan and found some (file missing) entries including seclogon.dll I think is new. I don't believe I have any programs requiring that service. Here is my HJT log can someone give it a look and see if everything is kosher?

I ran HTJ on my gf laptop since we noticed Pandora wasn't refreshing login page after she enters creds.

I noticed quite a few file missing entries for an assortment of system32 files and dlls

What wold you like me to run and/or post?

thanks

A:(file missing) entries in registry

HJT is a very outdated tool and also you shouldn't run  it without supervision.
It's not even compatible with 64-bit systems and if you're running such system you'll see a bunch of services reported as missing.

Are you having any particular computer problems?

Dell PC running XP Home.
40 gig hard drive, 2.1 MHz Pentium
768 MHz RAM

THis is a multi-part question.
Here's the problem.
ONE program (UPS WorldShip) hangs when it swaps between windows. It is the furthest computer from the server and is attatched via a hub rather than a switch, and only runs at 10 Mbps. However, switching to a wireless router and network card at 54 Mbps yields the same hanging, and other computers running the same program have no issue accessing the server, so I doubt that it is a network issue.
The page file size is adequate (4096 MB) and it matters not whether other programs are running or not. Could I have a swap file issue, (and where and how do I change that size?) or could it be that I just need more RAM (I wouldn't think that one program would eat all that up)?
Finally, can anyone tell me what processes should always be running in Task Manager? I've got 43 processes on this problematic PC, and I'm sure many of them are extraneous, but I don't want to close or disable a vital process.

A:rename a vista ultimate sys file

Hello Isnoend09,

You will need to take ownership of the file first, then you should be able to rename it if it is not in use.

Hope this helps,

Hi all,
I am looking for path of hosts file in vista x64...

I found solution to get for 32bit apps to see the 64-bit tree, search now find hosts file and i see it and can edit it. But before these solution i was unable to find hosts file.

Solution is taken from here:

Monochrome Blog - Updating your hosts file in Vista 64-bit

Where is this file hidden and how to find it .
If i run Notepad as administrator and try to browse that c\windows\sysnative directory i found noting .
But TotalCommander find it and i can edit it and add that what i need. It just was weird .

A:Vista Ultimate x64 hosts file

c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc. You have to be logged in as the administrator to edit it. This prevents others from writing to it.

Hi all! Let me start out by stating my tech experience with this matter. I know 64-bit OS's have 32-bit emulators that allow them to run 32-bit software, and I also know that there are a lot of programs that simply don't run under a 64-bit OS. I have done a file transfer from an older system to a new one, but they were both 32-bit Vista machines.

Here's the situation! I am building a new system here in a few days, and it will have the 64-bit Vista Ultimate OS on it to accommodate the 8GB's of RAM in the system. Right now my current system is running Vista Premium 32-bit and has a lot of needed files that I'd like to move to the new system.

Here's my question. Will a 64-bit machine accept files from a 32-bit machine through a transfer cable, or will they not cooperate with each other?

I already know that any system files won't work from one machine to another, but would I be able to get pictures, videos, game files, movie project files, etc. moved over?

Thanks in advance!
TZ

Yes you should be able to transfer files easily. Are the Vista PC's both updated to Service Pack 2?

I have 3 computers 1 running XP Pro, 1 Vista Home Premium and 1 Vista Ultimate. I also have a Thecus N299 NAS. I can access and change all files on XP without a password. On Vista Premium I log on to the NAS and then can change and access all files. On Vista ultimate I log on to the NAS and can access all files but I cannot change or even add new files.

I feel that the problem is with the folder permissions but no matter how I try to change them they always revert back. As security is not a problem can anyone tell me who to disable folder permissions in Ultimate so that it behaves more like XP or Vista home premium.

Your help will be much appreciated and stop me pulling my hair out.......

Having the same problem here.

I had ultimate on my vmc, reverted to home premium and vmc wont allow me to update my vmc library. I think it has something to do with the ultimate permissions.

I've read a bunch of threads and solutions to this problem but so far my problem persists. Problem is I get "The user has not been granted the required logon type at this computer" when I try to see Vista file shares from one particular account on the XP machine. If I create a new account on the XP machine I have no such problem, so I know enough to get the settings right. There must be sonthing wrong with this one account, but I cannot see any difference in the settings from those of accounts that do work. I've thought about deleting the bad account and recreating it from scratch, but am afraid of losing data... it's my wife's account!

Any ideas? I know about using secpol.msc on the Vista machine, and Everone is included where it should be and omitted where it shouldn't be.

FYI, I am running AVG Internet Security with the Firewall on. I would think if anything was wrong in that area the ather accounts wouldn't work either.

Hello all,

A while back I had an error with my system that led to some files getting corrupted. I managed to get everything repaired using Vista's command line scan and repair program (I forget the name).

My system runs fine these days, but there is one problem. For some reason I could never get iTunes to install. It always gave a weird error:

"Error 1719. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.".
This freaked me out, but it only ever happened with iTunes. I worried for a real long time that something intrinsic was screwed up with my system, but I never had a problem installing anything else.

The one file the windows repair program told me it wasn't able to fix was a file called C_857.NLS, which if I understand correctly is some kind of font file. I don't know if that's exactly what's causing my problems installing iTunes (I can only assume it would throw up the above error if it couldn't access the font file it wanted to use?) but from everything I can see it's the only thing that's corrupt on my computer.

I've tried finding ways to reacquire this file from my vista install disc but the methods required to get access to the files are beyond my resources. I was curious is one of the official techs could e-mail me a copy of this file so I can at least replace it and confirm out i... Read more

Okay, here's what I've got:

Music video file named: Evanescence-My_Immortal(dvd-2nafish).mpeg

Resides in: c:\users\(myuser)\downloads\

I can not delete, rename or..do anything to this file or the directory it resides in. I "Do not have permission". This is the same with the true administrator account as well.

File permission and ownership is perfectly file.

KillBox doesn't see the file.
Boot and Nuke can't see the file and neither can any of the other utilities.

This is not an invalid file - i can play the video with PowerDVD and Windows Media Player.

I can't figure out what else to do. I'd prefer to just rename the file and move it where it should be, but I can't.

Any thoughts?

RESOLUTION:

Download processexplorer.

http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/ProcessExplorer.zip

Run Process Explorer.

Click on "Find"->"File Handle or DLL"

Type in the name of the file that is giving you trouble. Click on any items that show up and "Close Handle". This may cause Windows Explorer to freak out for a second, but it's fine.

You can now delete the file.

I am having problems getting my shared folders on my XP Home machine to show up on my Vista Ultimate 64 cpu. I see my XP Home machine in the Network Map, but the only thing that I am seeing from that cpu is my DLNA servers. From my XP computer I am able to see both the folders I am sharing and the folders the Vista cpu is sharing. I have only 1 account on both cpus that are named the same and have the same password. I am running a Netopia router/modem from Qwest running the QM01-7.7.4r10 firmware version. I have tried disabling my firewall on both ends. I have everything turned on in Network and Sharing Center except password protection, but have tried it both on and off. My XP Home has all the most recent updates (SP3, etc...). I am also up to date on all my Vista stuff except the "Group Policy Preferance Client Side Extensions" optional update. My router is seing both computers as being in the LAN. Attatched is a screenshot of the network map.

It's doubtful those files are missing. More likely a bug still present in HijackThis where it cannot correctly enumerate some entries, so it gives a (file missing).

I would not put any faith in online analyzers such as that one. Much better to use these online databases

There's nothing wrong with any of those entries. Please leave them alone.

Hi. Just got a new Windows 7-64 machine from Cyberpower, so there is no junk or shovelware installed.

In addition to the 240 GB SSD system drive, there are two 2 TB data drives configured as RAID 1.

Since I got the machine, it's been locking up, hanging, crashing, and video disappears. My log file has hundreds of Errors, faults and critical errors. Disappearing video and errors related to the video driver are causing their tech support to want to change graphics cards but with all this whackiness, I don't think that's the problem.

I tried running HijackThis to see if anything might be happening in there and I think some critical Windows files are missing, like lsass.exe and alg.exe. Here is a list.

A:HJT shows many "file missing" entries

I have no clue at all about HJT - and suggest that you post over in the Security forums for advice about it.
Have you scanned for malware? If not, here's some free scans you can try: Free Online AntiMalware Resources

Only 1 memory dump (from 31 May) in the uploaded files - running it

You have issues with SBRE - it's either SunBelt software or AdAware antimalware stuff. Uninstall the program and then check perfmon /report (after a reboot) to ensure that the problem is gone

High Def Audio is disabled. Is this deliberate? If so, why?

We've seen a number of BSOD issues with SSD's. Here's the information that I've compiled so far:

Quote:
There's not a whole bunch available to test SSD's. The "easiest" test is to remove the SSD, install a platter-based hard drive, install Windows and test for stability that way.

Here's some suggestions:
- Update the SSD's firmware to the latest available version (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)
- Update the motherboard controllers drivers to the latest available version from the controller manufacturer (NOT the mobo manufacturer unless you can't find any on the controller manufacturer's website)
- Slow the memory (RAM) down to the next slower speed (I've only seen one person who claimed that this worked for them).
- Use any manufacturer's utilities that you may have. If you don't have any, then try this free one (I haven't used it myself): Crystal Dew World

I realize we are not suppose to post Hijackthis logs here but the computer I am working on ( remotely via email ) isn't infected with malware. I've analyzed many hijackthis logs in the past and present and have never seen so many file missing entries under Services before. While it is not uncommon to have a few this particular computer has 19 entries. I am perplexed as to why and what caused this. So far the only thing I do know is the computer has been getting the "Startup repair" option at boot or waking up from sleep mode. It will boot to Windows after the repair scan.

I would welcome any thoughts.
I was going to advise to use hijackthis to "fix" the file missing entries but I'm not sure this would be wise at this moment.

Ok, so over the course of the last few weeks, my computer has been nothing but trouble.

3 weeks ago my computer seemed to go dead, on boot it was'nt booting up my monior or HDD (the check it normally does on all things in your system, to make sure there all on)

After some faffing around, i unplugged my Dvd drive, and the computer just ran smoothly, as it were, so i just reverted back to my old CD-rom drive for the time being.

around a week later, my computer started to have crashes, i thought nothing of it, just re-formatted as i had alot of crap on my system anyways, After the re-format the computer still crashed occasionally, it would turn on then run for around 20 minutes or so, then just crash, then eventually after numerous reset's i would then get a message on boot up saying a file in windows was corrupt or missing, it has'nt just been one file, its been several different type's of files.

So i put the problems down to my hardrive (it was quite old, only 20gb forgot the RPM etc) So i went and got a new 80gb SATA one (sorry i dont know too much about computers )
Now this seemed ok at first, but then i STILL get crashes, then after a few crashes, my system doesnt start up claiming files are corrupt or missing. Which in turn forces me to Re-format!

Also my monitor has been playing up aswell, as sometimes it will not boot up with the system!

Everything in my computer is relatively up to date gear, Ill see what details i can muster for you :-

ok so im really frustrated here. I've talked to about 200 dif people and nobody can help me out, so im kinda relying on the hope that some god-awesome computer pro will read this post and throw me some help. I'm trying to edit the game file "C:\Program Files\LucasArts\SWKotOR\swkotor.ini". I have uncheck the read-only box in the file properties. I have Windows Vista and its doing something stupid. I am for SURE the administrator of this computer and when i uncheck the box and apply the changes, then go back to see if the changes stuck they didn't, and the file is still read-only. so if anyone could help me out that would be great. if there is another way around it, all im trying to do is add the line "EnableCheats=1" to the game options section in that file path. so if I dont need to change it from read-only then that would be great. Thanks for any help that anyone can give me in advance!

A:Editing a .ini file on Windows Vista Ultimate. I'm really frustrated

Welcome to TSG!

If it's not changing the permissions, then there's an easy way around it. .ini files are just text files, so using that knowledge, we can create a workaround.

First, create a new text file in the same folder as the .ini file, call it swkotor.txt

Open up the swkotor.ini file, hit ctrl+A (select all), and then ctrl+V (copy).

Open up the swkotor.txt file, and paste it in. Then, add the line that you want at the bottom.

Rename the original swkotor.ini file to something like swkotor.originalini.

Rename the swkotor.txt file to swkotor.ini

Good luck!

Hello,
I need to create a directory folder. What I need is a main folder with subfolders that pertain to weeks. I'm using Vista Ultimate

Ex: Main Folder- This will be the directory
Week 1- these will be the sub-folders
Week 2-
Week 3-
week 4-
Week 5-
Week 6-

I have never done this before and now I NEED to. It is part of an assignment that has nothing to do with anything other than learning how to do it.I will have to complete the namimg structure myself and since I have a course outline I feel confident I can do that much.I'm just not that familiar with using ANY OS and I'd like it to function as it should and not hurt anything in the process. Obviously,I'm still somewhat of a layman so please consider this when spelling it out for me. I can't thank you enough for any/all of the answers. Mark

A:Question for creating a directory file Using Vista Ultimate..

What do you mean "I'm just not that familiar with using this OS"

Doing what you want is not "that different" in VISTA than most other OS's. I don't see your problem.

EDIT:

OK, now I see. You don't have experience with ANY OS. That is different.

The others have answered your question. For a while I thought it was April 1st

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there any tweak or fix out there that will bring it back to normal? I have reinstalled some four time over the last month since first getting Vista (for driver problems, not this issue) but this problem has persisted through each install.

I want the old format of <1mb in kb and >1mb in mb.

Clicking on the START button (Windows 7 Home Premium) produces the FORM, but no information or links are listed. Clicking on the Desktop>> link on the bottom of the page shows the desktop items, but shows all folders and disks as empty. There IS information on them (i.e., programs, etc) but they are not accessible. I am assuming there is still some sort of virus on this computer; it crashes intermittently, and I cannot load the AdAware program; it comes up with a message that the system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation. I was also unable to run the 3rd recommended download from your "before you post" directions, it runs it partway through and then crashes. Do you think there's any help for this, or do I have a new anchor? Any assistance or suggestions would be VERY appreciated!!! I'm attaching / copying the reports as requested in the instructions. Hello folks.  I'm hoping someone can help me out of this dilemma.  Recently I was trying to create a backup of my hard drive which is running Windows Vista Ultimate on an AMD duo pentium.  I installed the software Macruim Reflect to do this.  However part way through the backup the software ran into an error and got stuck.  I shut down the computer and when I came back I was unable to boot back into the system.  I kept getting an error message from windows telling me that pssnap.sys was missing or corrupt.  I cannot boot into safe mode either.  I attempted to have Windows Vista do a repair but it failed unfortunately. I tried the Windows Vista automated startup repair application but it failed.  I also tried to go through the command prompt and use bootrec but that did nothing either.  I tried to find a copy of pssnap.sys online but no source for this file exist.  I even tried finding help through Macrium's web page but help is only available to registered (paid) users.  I took the drive out and ran different tests on it on another computer but all tests show the drive is fine and free of viruses.  I can also access all the drive material saved on it this way.  I just can't get the system to boot due to that corrupted file.  I really do not want to reinstall everything all over again, so I am hoping someone can help me out with this.  Thanks in advance!

A:Cannot boot into Vista due to missing SYS file

Hello, and Welcome

Tap F8 at boot and select Last Known good configuration. pssnap.sys is a Macrium driver.

What is the make and model of the computer? For HP you can get to System Restore by tapping F11 at startup and selecting advanced options. Pick a date before the problem started.

Does F8 give the option to repair computer in Vista? Go throught the steps and select System Restore. I can't remember if Vista gives you the option to do a System Restore using F8 at boot like Windows 7 does.

When I login to the pc I get 4 missing file messages..ssqon.dllnefcoskb.dlltuvutrs.dlljkkig.dllAlso.. half of the programs in this log do not exist on my machine because they have been uninstalled. I have ran several virus scans and spyware plus rootkit with nothing else being found. I did find some viruses before and I manually deleted these missing files. Since I deleted the files, the popups have ceased however I now experience the login error messages. I have also ran scandsk and chkdsk both and again the anti-virus programs in safe mode all to no avail.. plus ran several online scans.. a few online scans would not work. Hi there,

Have you ever heard of Ubuntu? It's a Linux operating system. You can download a Live CD of this (basically means you don't have to install it to your computer, the OS is based on the CD) and recover your files from your hard drive in that way.

You will need to burn the .iso file of Ubuntu using ImgBurn so that the CD will be bootable.

After that, I would recommend formatting.

Hi Folks,

I have a Dell Vostro running Windows Vista Ultimate. Recently the file and folder names disappeared . The only thing left in any folder is the icons. I also noticed that the 'search' facility now states that' it failed to initialize' and the system icon under control panel is not working. Apart from that the PC runs fine. I first suspected a virus or malware so i have ran Malwarebytes, Avast antivirus and Superantispyware.. Only the later picked up a few items which i removed to no avail. I have also ran a 'repair' from the Vista Disk. I have tried all combinations of holding shift, alt ..etc while toggling through the view settings and selecting different folders. I have tried customising folders and changing templates. I have tried removing the 'Hide filenames' option where I could find it. I have ran combofix just in case the registry was corrupted.

None of the above has made the slightest difference. Actually when I toggle the 'hide Filenames' option on and off I can see the icons move as if to make space for the folder/file names. This lead me to believe that perhaps the file names where there but perhaps in a colour like 'transparent' crazy as this seems . Needless to say that lead me no where. Couldn't find any option for text colour on files/folders

If anyone has experience this then please help as i have no other option than to now reformat the system and re-install Windows. This is really a last resor... Read more

ComboFix...is malware tool, it is not designed to be used to attempt modification of the Windows registry.

Hi all. First time poster, and would be very grateful for your expertise. I have a Dell XPS 430 running Vista 32-bit. Recently, if the system was left inactive for a period of time it was randomly freezing or crashing out altogether, requiring a reboot and disk check. After nipping away leaving it on for about half an hour this evening, I come back to find it has tried to reboot, presumably after a crash, and is failing to do so with the following error message:

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1. insert your windows installation disk and restart your computer. 2. choose your language settings, and then click 'next'. 3. Click repair your computer. If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

File: \Windows\System32\Drivers\tufsci.sys

Status: 0xc0000225

Info: Windows failed to load because a critical system driver is missing, or corrupt."

The first thing I did was search for this driver in google to see what it related to. Unusually, I couldn't find any reference to it, which makes me suspicious. Next, I tried starting the system in safe mode but it wouldn't boot into that either, giving the same error message. I dug out the Dell supplied operating system reinstallation dvd, booted into this and ran the Vista repair tool. It told me it had identified a startup problem and was attempting to fix this, but after seve... Read more

Hi
Whenever i start up i get an error message saying that i am missing the file jkhhf.dll from C:\WINDOWS\system32.
Iv searched for it on my windows vista cd to just pop it into the right folder but cannot find it.
Cheers
Ryan

A:missing jkhhf.dll file?? [moved from Vista]

The file is a trojan, which means you PC is (or was) infected.

Any removal has not been done fully by the sound of it.

I would suggest posting a HiJackThis log in the Security section of the forum, full instructions on downloading, running and posting the log will be available there.

I'm not sure if this is malware related or not, I assume it is.

Computer wont boot, it gets to the screen with the windows loading bar at the bottom, after 3 or 4 of the bar loading the system is sent to a blue screen.

Computer reboots and repeats. Same thing when trying to boot into safe mode.

When I boot to windows vista CD, and go to repair. It fails and when I look at the "Startup Repair Diagnosis and repair details" everything shows as successful and then this:

All,

I have a customer with a frsutrating problem. He woke up a few days ago and found his Ouutlook 2007 pst file missing. He's running Vista. We can do a search and see the e-mail and other info from the missing PST file but Vista doesn't tell us where it's located. We checked his AppData/local/Microsoft/Outlook folder and there is no Outlook.pst file. Also his Archive.pst is missing. Yet, search is showing his old e-mail.

Any suggestions? He's in a panic! His business is on the line.
