Preferred Solution: Weird explorer icon?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

i cannot change the explorer icon nest to the start orb.I've downloaded the themes at deviantart and followed each and every steps..and use resHack also.but i still can't change it.Any idea?

A:cannot change explorer icon (icon next to start orb)

Should be able to just right click on the explorer icon, then right again where it says Windows Explorer, then Properties, change icon. Point to where the new icon you want to change to is, and apply. Might have to reboot for it to change.

Hi,

I've been having a weird icon bug for some time now, and i was hoping it would fix on it's own, but no luck.
So, sometimes, some icons simply disappear, as shown in the picture below, and it takes some time to load everything, like 1 minute.

All of the files shown in the picture below were folders, except for FPS Booster which is an .exe that does that media player trick. I have tried resetting the thumbnail cache, running disk check and sfc /scannow but nothing corrupt can ever be found. Any suggestions?

PS: The books folder has a special book icon i use for it, is that why it's the only one that shows the folder icon?
PS2: Don't know if it matters, but i use AeroGlass and Startisback. I use windows 8.1

Thanks,
Alex.

Hello Iwirasatria, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It looks like it could be a messed up shortcut arrow overlay on the icon. If you like, restore the default shortcut arrow using an option in the tutorial below to see if that may sort it for you.

Good morning everyone.

I have a very interesting problem. I have a user in my domain that whatever account i create for him he gets this funky overlay icon on most desktop icons. If anybody has seen this overlay icon please explain to me where it is coming from and how do i resolve it. It may seem to be hindering the users productivity a little, but not sure if its completely related.

If you look in the bottom left corner of the icon you will see the "refresh" arrows. thats what i am looking for an answer to what that is.

I have tried using tweakUI to repair the icon cache, no go. still there. I am at a loss!

Please help! Ask me any questions you need, i will answer them!

Thanks for your time.

Hey guys! I've got this problem of an internet explorer icon on my desktop that cannot be deleted.

I've tried dragging it to the recycle bin (nothing happens).

Tried searching for it in cmd (can't find it in /Default/desktop, /<User>/Desktop, or /Public/Desktop, even with the dir /a:h /b setting)

The context menu is weird (see image).

Tried unlocker (unlocker option doesn't appear in the context menu of that file so i guess it doesn't work)

Tried MoveonBoot (can't find the file in desktop folder)

Basically that file appears on my computer's desktop folder (see image), but not when I access the Desktop folder from elsewhere, such as to upload on sevenforums (see image)

All I can do with the file is rename it (it was originally 'Internet Explorer' and, as you can see, I've named it 'wtf'). I cannot move it to a folder either (it creates a link in the folder instead of itself moving into the folder).

If you're wondering what happens when I run the file, basically internet explorer runs but the homepage is reset to some Chinese site

I would greatly appreciate help in removing this icon that hopefully doesn't involve reinstalling windows.

Cheers

Hello,
Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.

It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Here is a weird error that I have never seen before.

I have an NT box here that shows the same icon for every program shortcut on the desktop. It is the Outlook 2000 icon. This happens in every profile, leading mne to believe that there is a registry key messed up in hkey_local_machine.

Here is what I have tried so far.

Have run a full virus scan with up to date defs. No Viri

Have run adaware with the latest defs. No spyware.

Have tried to use tweakui 1.33 to run a repair. The repair works until the next logoff.

Tried repairing Office. No dice.

Tried uninstalling Outlook rebooting then reinstalling. When I uninstalled, the icons were the default windows icon, after the reinstall, they once more showed the Outlook Icon.

Anybody seen this one before?

Hey,

I've been having this problem with my mouse icon where it changes into this odd vertical icon composed of 8 or so little images of just the top of the original mouse icon. Also, around when this happens, if the mouse icon needs to change to the "I" icon used for text, it begins to flicker and has 2 bars above it.

I've searched around and I've found some people who had a problem where the mouse randomly became enlarged but that was fixed with an ATI HD4800 series hotfix for the 9.12 driver, but the driver I'm using is version 10.2 which is the most up to date. It's not a major problem, mostly aesthetic really, but I'm worried that it might be a symptom of a larger problem, i.e. my graphics card slowly dying.

I noticed that the problem occurs (at least recently) when I'm moving the mouse from one monitor to the other (I have a dual monitor setup). The monitors have different resolutions. My primary is 1280x768 and my secondary is 1440x900.

Any thoughts that anyone could provide would be really appreciated. It's not a huge concern but I figure it's better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks,
Spacefreak

Since installing IE8 RTM in Vista SP1 x86 I've been having some problems with internet shortcut icons not displaying correctly on my desktop.
I've tried deleting and redoing them, tried using AM Deadlink to refresh my Favourites icons to no avail. They show normally in Favourites but show as a smaller version within a white frame on the desktop. This doesn't seem to effect all of them, just some.

I've attached two thumbnails to illustrate what I mean. The first one is the Canada Post item in Favourites and the second one is the same shortcut on the desktop. As you can see there there's another one doing the same thing for Newegg.ca.

I think I am right in saying that it's not a case of rebuilding the system icon cache as that only effects system icons, am I right?

FYI desktop resolution is 1680 x 1050 and I have the desktop icon size set to Classic.

So any ideas folks?

Hi,

My program icons are turning into Swiss cheese. I'm not kidding. I foolishly tried opening a game crack that I downloaded. It's icon was a wedge of Swiss cheese. It wouldn't open, which didn't concern me very much, but now about a third of the programs on my computer, apparently at random, have this same wedge of Swiss cheese for an icon. None of the programs with the changed icons will work properly. They either won't open at all or only after a variety of error messages all relating to missing or corrupted dlls. What's weird is how random it was. Macromedia Flash and Fireworks were affected, but not Macromedia Dreamweaver or Authorware in the same folder. Even some programs that donít have changed icons, like Word and Musicmatch, open only after dll error messages. I've run Ad-aware and Spyware, but they didn't find anything more than the usual cookies, and I did a virus scan with Norton Utilities that came up with nothing. I learned of something called TweakIU which supposedly restores icons, but that didn't change anything.

Thanks for any help.

Hi,

I'm desperate for your help. This is spreading and has already infected my back up drives. I have one clue. I discovered that I have an invisible folder in my C drive and back up drives called MouseMX which is filled with icons--not the Swiss cheese icons but the originals--including, I think, all the programs that have been affected. This must be it because what happened originally was I downloaded a demo of Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, and the icon was a mouse, and then when I tried openening the .exe file that was supposedly a crack for Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, the demo icon, and countless other icons, all turned into the Swiss cheese icon. Ah, the wages of sin. That's what I get for dabbling in crack, I know. PLEASE HELP and I will never do it again.

When I view most of my photo thumbnails on my PC in the MyPictures or any other folder, there is a large blue icon attached to each that has ">>" inside it. I thought this might be to show that it is a movie, but it's not and doesn't function that way. What is it and how can I remove it? Changing the association in Properties doesn't do anything. The problem is that the icon is so large it covers up most of the thumbnail picture, so I can tell which picture I am viewing.

Try changing your default viewer. Usually if you have added a specific program to manage your photos, it will link them to the program you are using. To do this, right click and select 'open with'... Then on the list that shows up select Microsoft picture viewer, and then under the dialogue box select the always use this program to open this file.

Can you post a picture, and also let us know what the default picture browser is?

Ok this is hard to explain.

The other day I noticed that my start menu is missing pictures. And if I go to Control panel for an example All the icons except network connections and printers and fax have all turned to the white paper picture, and every program is the same, no picture. And in any window there used to be the blue part on the left with "File and folder tasks" and "other Places" ... that is no longer there either. Same with my music folder, they do not have the Itunes logo anymore. All the programs seem to work normal.... as far as I can tell anyway... I am running windows XP, and have not installed any new programs recently. I attached a few screen shots to try and show what I mean.

A:Icon Pictures Gone, And Start Menu Weird

Hi nam_acillatem, Welcome to the forum.I'm no expert here but this --> And in any window there used to be the blue part on the left with "File and folder tasks" and "other Places" ... that is no longer there either. <-- caught my attention... so here's my .02? worth.Click Start> click My Pictures or any other folder to open a windows explorer> then click Tools> then click Folder Options and look at the General tab, the entry at the top is TASKS... is it by chance set to "Use Windows Classic Folders" ? If it is then re-set it to "Show Common Tasks In Folders" and that should put the blue thingy back on the right hand side of the page.I have no idea if that will help your other problem though. I'm jealous over your FireFox browser though. Mine is all 'plain Jane' looking and your's is all hot-n-sexy looking. May I ask where you got it from?[EDITED] Oops! I forgot to ask; Have you ran an Anti-Virus scan lately? If not I would suggest that you boot your PC into Safe Mode and run one... there might be some kind of germ running around in your machine.♥ Wendy

In IE6 with WinXP I find it convenient to include a shortcut to about:blank in my quick start taskbar menu. I've done this for years, and IE has associated a tooltip with this icon that reads "about:blank." I'm able to control the nature of the tooltip associated with such icons by renaming the shortcut. This is not working with the about:blank shortcut, but I can live with a tooltip reading "about:blank." However, I'm now continually annoyed by a preface to the tooltip that gives the URL of a page I recently went to. So the tooltip now reads, "http://formmailto.com/formmailto/formhelp.htm about:blank."

This is very weird. The tooltip does not change, even though I've visited many other pages from the about:blank page. I've deleted the about:blank shortcut and re-created it, only to see the exact same annoying tooltip. I've also run the System File Checker, to no avail.

I don't need any tooltips for these shortcuts, and, if I have to have them, I certainly don't want a tooltip pointing to an irrelevant page. What can I do?

Not sure if this is a browser (latest Firefox) or Windows problem, so I'll describe the issue here.

All my program shortcuts are placed on the taskbar. The problem I'm about to describe and show, only occurs with the Firefox taskbar icon and its preview thumbnails. And will happen whether one or multiple tabs are on the tab bar. When hovering the cursor over FF's tab bar icon, and then hovering (and not clicking) the cursor over a tab's preview thumbnail, FF's window will now show several tiled FF's with the present thumbnails site on top. But, now clicking on that thumbnail, the site will open as a single site...with no evidence of the other apparently opened FF's. This only happens with the FF taskbar icon's thumbnail and not with any of the other icons on the bar.

Here are some captures of this odd occurrence:

This morning when I turned on my PC, I noticed these 2 weird icons appearing in front of my two drives (local, and backup disks). The 2 icons were not there before, can someone explain what they are? They look like the standard Microsoft User(s) icon, but why are they suddenly/randomly appearing?

Here's an image of what I'm talking about.

Hello,

After refreshing, I get this weird paper/file icon on my desktop. It looks like a system icon. I tried to delete it and it asks me if I want to delete THESE ICONS from my desktop and if I want to restore it later, I must go to Control Panel. I clicked Yes and so it was deleted but after every refresh, it returns. I deleted it again, after refreshing it went back again and again. I want to get rid of this once and for all but I can't because it keeps on coming back after I refresh. Please help

Thanks.

Screenshot attached.

I found this process in my system tray and I have no clue what it is. I didn't put it there, and I can't identify it in Task Manager's process list. It showed up as far as I know yesterday. I was told by my friend who is a computer person (works at a place) to run combofix, as well as MBAM, and I did. I thought it was gone, but it showed back up a few minutes ago. Please help me either a) determine what it is, if its good or bad, and what caused it and what I need to do to get it off it is bad, because obviously combofix and MBAM didn't get it.EDIT: Now there is two of them, and I don't know what they are!
