Reducing a video file, without losing quality

Q: Reducing a video file, without losing quality

Hey everyone

I have a video file right now, that is 640 X 360 pixels, and I need it to be on the web.

That being said, it is a 32 MB file, so it takes a while for it to start playing when you click on the link to see it.

My question is, how can I reduce the size of the video to maybe 320 X 240, or something near that size, without losing sound quality, and video quality? Or, is there something wrong in my code on my website, to where I can make it start playing earlier?

Here is a link to a test page I am working on, you can view the video file by clicking on the guy on the right: IFG Test Site

Preferred Solution: Reducing a video file, without losing quality

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Sorry if this is a pretty basic question but I have some video's that I would like to put onto facebook, but you're only allowed to upload a max of 300mb, and mine are bigger than this. Is there any free software or a website that will allow me to reduce the size or quality to be able to upload these?

thanks in advance

Im trying to find a program (preferably freeware) that will resize video resolution without losing any quality.
I tried a program called videoenhancer, it seemed that it could do the job. it resized the video without making it pixelated.
but when i tried converting the resulting file was 18Gigs (from the original 190mb) and it didnt play with my media player complete with codecs.

A little help with the program or suggestions for other programs will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

A:making video resolution larger without losing quality

It's not possible to resize a video (especially make it larger) without losing video quality. Think about it. Your video has a certain amount of information to display the video. When you increase its size, you have to add more information. Result, crappy video.

That's why video (and pictures) are created in a larger size then reduced. It's also why HD and BlueRay exist.

Hi sammyd. What format is the video in now? (file ext)If it's an .avi, converting to mpeg will reduce the file size significantly. To give you an idea, below is from YouTube:What's the best format to upload for high quality? We recommend the MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format at 320x240 resolution with MP3 audio. Resizing your video to these specifications before uploading will help your clips look better on YouTube.

Hello Group,
I purchased a new video camera and took some video of the family pic nic yesterday. I wanted to email it to each of the family members, but after downloading it to my PC, when I try to send it, I get a warning that the file is too big to send that it exceeds the limit. How can I reduce the size of the file without damaging the video? Is it possible to split the file so that cut in half, would automatically reduce the size of the file. Any and all suggestions are appreciated. Thank you all very much.

A:RE: Reducing video file size to send via email

You could try "zipping" it up prior to sending, then attach the zip file, but it may not reduce it much if the video is already compressed. You can also split the file as you suggessted, using 7-Zip: http://7-zip.org/

When you've installed 7-Zip, open it's main window and locate the video file with it using File > Open
Now click File > Split File

I just built a fun website for practice. I went to http://www.echoecho.com/toolhtmlinspector.htm and I just ran a check on mywebsite and was warned that my load was way too heavy. (happy - everything else turned out ok)

It seems that I need to reduce the size of some of my jpg's.
I have not applied any compression when saving in fear of losing quality (am I correct there?)

Is there a method I should be addressing, or a particular application?

thank you

Here's the deal, I have an Apple Ipod, I encoded a lot of the music I put on it when I first got it at 160kps and now I'm nearing the end of my free disc space I'm wishing I did them at 128kps as I have done for all my recent uploads.

My question is, is there a program out there that can re-encode the 160kps files to 128kps? I have musicmatch and that CAN do it, but only 1 track at a time which would take forever. I need to say load whole album and press go. Otherwise I'm just gonna have to rip them all again

Hi, guys. I'm looking for some explanations. My main question is how to improve the quality of flv video file.

Can I use flv converter 7 for that? I saw several options there:
- video window (that can vary from 400x300 to 768x576 pixels);
- video bitrate (that vary from 96 to 1200 Kbps);
- video frame rate (that vary from 8 to 30 fps).
How to use these options to make a quality of the flv video better? For example, is the quality of the video better if the video is 768x576 pixel than if it is 400x300 pixels? Is the quality of the video better if video bitrate is 1200 Kbps than if it is 96 Kpbs? Is it better if frame rate is 30 than if it is 8 fps?

Thank you for your explanations and your time.

I am trying to insert an AVI file of a video screencapture I created in SnagIt 10. When i view the file in media player the quality is excellent. I then insert the AVI file into PowerPoint using the Insert > Movie from File option (as I would prefer not to insert a media player object in the slide) and set the move to play when click. When I run the slideshow and click the clip, the picture quality worsens and some of the text in the screencapture becomes hard to read.

I've contacted Techsmith (vendors of SnagIt) and they have been unable to assist. Has anyone comes across this issue before and know how to resolve it?

Hello. I'm ripping DVDs so that I can post snippets of scenes to put on Youtube videos within fair dealing laws. I'm trying to rip DVDs with Handbrake and it does create a file with playable videos, and there are no problems with the sound. However the picture quality comes out noticeably degraded. This might be a compression but I'm not sure.

I've tried adjusting the bar of the "Constant Quality -- RF" bar under the video section to increase image quality before downloading and adjusting over relevant variables but to no avail.

What do I need to do to resolve this issue?

Lose the Firewire. If it's a dual interface drive, try the USB connection.

Hi everyone!

I publish a fortnightly mail out for Live Entertainment in Melbourne, Australia, and today is the day of distribution! However, I have just updated my layout - taking into consideration much subscriber feedback and I am now stuck with a major dillemma - the file size in the inbox is 315kb. Which is just damn rude.

I write the mail up in Word, then transfer it to Outlook express and then send it. It does contain two graphics, but they are quite small in size and also some tables.

Thank you very much in anticipation,

Desperate Australian.

A:Reducing File Sizes - In Desperation!!!

I'm not sure how you transfer your word doc to outlook express. Do you add it as an attachment, do you convert the Word doc to HTML or do you use some other method.

I personally make a advertisement newsletter for a company. I create the HTML code using a web development tool (Dreamweaver). The pictures are not included in the mail. The e-mail contains references to the pictures, the actual pictures are stored on a web server. The the receiver, this is transparent. He sees the pictures inside the e-mail, he doesn't have to click and go to the website.

Using this technique, I can keep the size of the newsletter down to 20-30k

I have file copy set to never delete any files. As a result, the file copy folder has grown quite large. I need to fix this. If I change the parameter to say delete files older than 3-months old, will I maintain a copy of all files including those that did
not change in the last three months?
I am assuming, initially, file copy makes a copy of all files and then periodically updates files that change. But if a file doesn't change very often do I run the risk of having the initial copy deleted if I set the delete time from to something other than
"never delete anything"?
What is the proper procedure for re-setting  file copy to start with a delete time frame? I read elsewhere for Windows 10 that simply deleting the file copy folder is not enough.
Thanks in advance.

1. Where did the deleted files reside before I deleted them? Something must have gotten smaller. (These files were not just moved to the deleted items bin. I shift-deleted them along with their folders.)

2. How can I reduce the size of the outlook.pst file?

Usually my pictures are too large to be practical for sending in email. So I have been opening using Paint, then saving to another location and using the saved file in the second location to attach to my emai. The Paint program usually saves it in less than half the size, which makes it a lot easier to send as an email attachment.

My problem: I was requested recently to resend a file in .tif format, rather than the usual jpg. But for some reason saving in .tif with Paint actually had the effect of more than doubling the size of the file!

Optimally I would like to cut the size of the file (which is in jpg by the way) from about 14 MB to about 1 MB or even less in .tif format.

I have media player 9 on an XP platform.

Suddenly a month ago the videos went to crap and are just pixilated mush. I played around in tools/performance I told it not to use video accelerators. That worked ! Except it will now not run fullscreen - presumably because without the accelerators it can't handle it.

turn them back on and the video goes back to a kaleidoscope videos.

I noticed that I can play my saved mpegs and wmv's fine - it's just the new ones that are messed and it just started. I can't believe that every vid I have received in the last 3 weeks is some new format that requires a codec I don't have. I can go back and play ones received in January - but almost all from Feb won't run with the accelerators turned on.

I am unable to see anything different between them in their properties. Any suggestions?

I know I could upgrade to 10 but it would be nice to identify the culprit. And besides - what if I go to 10 and it still does it!

A:video quality i

It sounds like a codec issue the way you describe it. There are a number of tools that allow you to view/remove or analyse the codecs on the system. I can't recommend one off hand but maybe another member can. Have you installed any codec packs on the system before the issue started? Do you have any codec packs installed on your system at all? Most codec packs tend to mess up systems even the so called "lite ones." It's best to simply install the codecs you need instead of a codec pack.

One that does seem to be better then the rest is the K-Lite Codec Pack. It does have tools to remove bad/corrupted codecs on your system. It's worth a try if someone else doesn't have a better sugestion.

When I play movies from online sources like Hulu the video appears pretty good. When I download videos some look great but others not so much.

A:Video Quality

Hello FredRock,

Here is the deal with the video. Video is only going to play as good as the source file. You're equipment is pretty nice, but if the video itself is of poor quality then your playback will be of poor quality as well.

Let me give you a simple example.

Lets say you have a video, the resolution is set to 720dpi. This is a really High quality video, SHD quality. Will be play beautifully on your monitor. Will take up a lot of disk space though, around 8gb for a movie (compression and other variable not widthstanding). Same video, at 320 dpi. This is a lot lower quality, will look blocky or grainy, take up about 1gb for the same movie.

I hope this helps explain it. There truely is so much with video it is dizzying, divx decoders, and drivers, and compression methods and players makes me wanna vomit from time to time just thinking about.

I hope this helps.

When I play any form of video, be it from files, online streams or IPTV, the playback is suffering from a variety of symptoms. Any video playing keeps stopping & starting, suffers from a grainy/white interference and the resolution is quite poor. Interestingly, these problems have only transpired when the memory was upgraded to 2GB of RAM and had AutoCAD installed on it.

The new RAM seems to be running accordingly and believe I've correctly updated the Video Adapter & IPTV hardware drivers and updated all media players. The laptops fan is also noticeably louder.

Where can I go from here?

I have a 1080p 60fps video on my Macbook Air in the Photos application. When I look at it, it looks perfect.
However when I export it onto a hard-drive, or onto my desktop, the quality seems to drop very slightly.
When I check the info of the video on the Photos application, it says it takes up somewhere around 7MG, whilst if I check the info of the same on my desktop or in the hard-drive, it says around 2MG.
Is there something external that messes with the amount of space it takes, or does the quality or frame per seconds drop, and me seeing a drop in quality is just my imagination.
I need to export the videos to my hard-drive so they don't take up space on my computer, but I don't want the videos to permanently lose their quality.
Is there no issue at all, and an explanation for the drop in quality, and if there is an issue, can you explain it, and is there a way around it?

Do you currently have poor DVD quality? (from real dvds of course... not downloads)

Depending on how old your machine... 16mg is a little slow even for basic computing. Upgrading will improve the overall speed of the machine.

The easiest thing to try first would be VLC media player portable from this page:
VideoLAN - Download official VLC media player for Windows

It comes with its own codecs. If that doesn't give a clearer picture then you should post some details about the video, codec used, player etc..

Also you will find more readers heavy into video on this forum

Hi Jim,

I'm not sure what you mean, nor can I see anything on your images. Can you highlight what you mean?

In the meantime, check your graphic settings. I know that you have ATI graphics whereas I have NVidia, but you should have similar settings available.

Well, first things first, this is my first time on this board so a big hello to everyone!

Basically, I'm want to improve the quality of video my PC is capable of, especially in gaming. With demanding such as Doom 3 I experience a slow frame rate, and I nearly always have to use low quality settings to make it playable at all, so I end up with a low resolution, jagged edges and bad textures. The frame rate drops significantly when in large areas, or when there is "a lot going on", like say when I'm racing along a highway in GTA San Andreas.

Here's my system specs:

Windows XP Home SP2
AMD Athlon XP 1700+, 1.47GHz
768MB of DDR RAM
nVidia GeForce MX/MX400 64MB (Most recent drivers installed)
50GB Hard Drive (20GB~ Free space)

So what do you think would be the best way to improve my video quality? I'm willing to spend a around 300 (Around $500) on any hardware upgrades I need, I just need to know where it would be best spent.

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
All the best

P.S. Not sure if it was best to post here or in the Gaming sub-forum, so I apologize if this is in the wrong place
