Computer works perfectly fine then all of a sudden freezes

Q: Computer works perfectly fine then all of a sudden freezes

It does this like once an hour at least. Once it's frozen, it's frozen until I manually power off.

I tried scanning with spybot twice, and avira twice, though it froze on me befor it completed. I'm defragging now, but it will probably freeze before it's finished too.

Any advice?

Win XP, on a compaq pesario, by the way.

Preferred Solution: Computer works perfectly fine then all of a sudden freezes

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I think this has been happening since I upgraded to windows 8.1, back in October/November (which is around where this problem started). It's WiFi internet.

I can connect to the internet just fine, speeds are normal, all that good stuff. But when I'm connecting to a new network it takes forever (and "Connecting to the network is taking longer than usual" comes up) and it comes up with "The connection is limited."

The most annoying part is that this happens between four DIFFERENT connections in 2 countries. So. I need this issue solved, it takes forever to connect to the internet if I disconnect for any reason, My phone connects to the WiFi just fine, so it's not a WiFi issue. Even connecting to the WiFi with an ethernet cable doesn't work.

I'd delete my old topic if I could, but apparently I got a few things wrong. >_> Mod Edit: A Staff member deleted it for you ~ Hamluis.Anyways, I just got a new hard drive and motherboard for my computer today. I found that the green port doesn't work for whatever reason (and I'm not bothered by it unless it could fix this problem) so I managed to get the blue port to work by changing the settings to quadraphonic. Now that I've done that, my music player works, as does the test sound on SoundMax. However, everything else (Youtube, other internet stuff, any of my computer games) doesn't work. Looked around for a bit, nothing I found seemed to point to why.

I'm running 64bit Windows 7 on an Acer Aspire 5742G-6846 (specs posted below). As the title suggests, when I turn on my computer, it will start, login, but then it freezes. I'm not sure what else I can do short of reinstalling Windows. Any suggestions? Hijackthis log is posted under the laptop specs. Thanks so much.

Have you used the Registry Cleaner in CCleaner?

If you have, you should check this out.

Quote from Phantom010

You should avoid Registry Cleaners, Boosters, Optimizers, TuneUp Utilities... This type of software will do a lot more harm than good, and should only be used by advanced users who really know their way around the registry. Never to be used blindly on "Auto" mode. Most members coming here with WEIRD symptoms had their computer messed up by malware and/or registry cleaners. These utilities do not only remove what "they think" are orphan entries in the registry but legitimate files still in use will be deleted in the process, crippling some programs and Windows applications beyond repair. In a word, it's a scam.

Keep in mind that they will always find "errors" to fix, even on a fresh Windows install! In itself, this should be enough to convince non-believers...

Hello all, I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop that uses Windows Vista Home Basic that freezes shortly after I turn it on and log in. I can still move the cursor, but I can't click anything or type anything. It works fine in Safe Mode. I am in Safe Mode with Networking right now. I am suspecting that it is something to do with the drivers since it works fine in Safe Mode. For my first troubleshooting method, I would like to disable all Startup items I possibly can in System Configuration. The problem is that I don't know what I can disable and what I cannot. I don't want to mess anything up.

The origin of the problem: One night I was playing a computer game, not in a web browser, just on the computer, then I went to bed. I didn't turn off the computer, I just shut the top. About 5 minutes later, I heard the Windows start-up music. I thought to myself "What the...?" I opened the top and it said something like, "Windows had to restart due to an error." I click OK and proceeded. After about maybe a minute, it froze and I had to shut it off manually by holding down the power button. Now every time I turn it on and log on, after about a minute, it freezes. I can still move the cursor, but can't click or type anything.

If disabling everything in the StartUp tab of System Configuration doesn't fix the issue, I would like to disable all the items that I possibly can in the Services tab.

Here is a list of all the items that I have in the StartUp tab of System Con... Read more

Hi I've just recently started experiencing freezing during start-up. It started during a game of League of Legends, and has been progressively getting worse. It's to the point where it'll take minutes to log on and when it does eventually get to my desktop the task bar will have a loading symbol when I scroll on it. I've tried disabling all start-up programs, and services in MSConfig. Updated all drives, uninstalled newly installed programs, restored to a week prior to the freezing and still nothing. Any suggestions?

A:Computer works fine in safe mode, extremely slow and freezes otherwise

Hi there, have you tried removing other peripherals like extra HDD's or DVD/CD drive? might be an idea to just start your machine with only 1 drive, your memory and Video card. If it still does that, try starting the machine with less memory, if you have more than one module of ram.

The Event Viewer errors you posted indicates possible issues with your hard drive. SO my first advise is nothing but to backup all important data to an external medium as an insurance. You can use USB HDD , Flash drive or DVD to backup the data. Then follow the below steps.
1. Download Crystal Disk Info Standard Edition portable from the below link.
2. Run the tool and it will display the SMART data of your hard drive. Now Choose Edit --> Copy and all the data will be copied to the clipboard. then open Notepad and choose Edit --> Paste and save the file.  Attach this text file with next reply using More reply options --> Attach files.
3. Specify the exact make and model number of your Motherboard and Hard drive with next reply.

About an hour ago, websites are starting to load slower (not my internet) than they normally do, and the ones that do load eventually become unresponsive. It's so bad that I can't even load chrome://history or chrome://plugins without them becoming unresponsive (image here). On the other hand, Internet Explorer works perfectly fine. Websites on it load instantly and I can use it for more than five minutes without it becoming unresponsive, so it's obviously something on Chrome's side. I've restarted my PC and uninstalled/reinstalled Chrome and both doesn't help. I've removed all my extensions to see if they are the culprit, but they're not. This happened all of a sudden, and I haven't changed any settings in Chrome before or after all of this started happening.

So, my email works just fine still but I can't get any pages to load. I didn't make any changes that I can recall. I haven't been using my pc very much lately. The only thing I remember is that the day I noticed that it wasn't working anymore the power had gone out at the house while I was gone. I have no idea what to look into.

Any suggestions?

A:IE won't work all of a sudden... email works fine.

It seems strange that email is working and Internet Explorer is not. Perhaps IE got somehow corrupted. What are you using to connect to the internet - DSL, cable, FIOS, dialup, etc? I try having your modem reset as a first quick easy step. If you have broadband (not dialup), contact your broadband provider - Comcast, Verizon, etc. to assist. If you have a wired or wireless router, try resetting that too.

If still cannot connect using IE after resetting above, a workaround for Internet is using Mozilla Firefox (which personally and other experts think is better and more secure than IE). If you have another computer of a friend or family nearby, it can be downloaded from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/ and burned to CD (it is only 5.7MB) to install on your PC. If this works for you, then you know there is something going on with IE.

I have a ZyXEL 600 wireless router - it has worked without issues for years.

However yesterday evening my wireless router suddenly stopped broadcasting a signal.

2 different PC's and a wifi dongle attached to our TV were suddenly all unable to find my network.

The WLAN light on the router was still lit up. I connected my Acer Aspire 5742Z laptop to the router via an ethernet cable and it worked fine. I connected to the router and it said there were no errors.

I phoned ZyXEL support this morning and they dialled in, confirmed the router was reporting it was working. They installed inSSIDer on my PC and verified no signal was being picked up - but other local wireless networks were being picked up.

They suggested buying another modem as it was very old and could have just reached the end of its life.

So I bought a brand new Sitecom 300N x2 modem this morning, connected it up and have the exact same problem. All the right lights are on the modem (solid WLAN, DSL and Internet lights), I can connect via an ethernet cable but none of my devices can find a the wireless browser (but can find other networks and connect to them).

I've spent hours on the phone today to various tech people and gone through channel switching, changing encryption etc but nothing has worked. The router is sat in the same place it has been for the last 3 years and the laptop is inches from it but still no joy.

As far as I can see I've ruled out:

Hello, I've been having this issue recently. On my laptop, the wifi works fine, and then a little while later, it can't connect at all (it looks like it's connected, then disconnects, and then tries connect again, etc). All the other devices connected to the router is fine, only mine is the problem. I tried looking at device manager, the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 is enabled, updated, and in the properties, it says that the device is working properly.

The problem does go away temporarily when I turn off the router, wait a little, and then turn it back on, but soon afterwards, I continue to have connecting issues.

Here's the info

1. Is this a wired or wireless connection issue?

2. Who is your Internet Service Provider (ISP)?

3. What type of Broadband connection are you using?

4. What is the exact Make and Model of your Modem, Router or Modem/Router Combo - Linksys, D-Link, Netgear, TP-LINK, etc.

Welcome to Seven Forums,

Thanks for using the basic requirements, all info provided were very helpful. Your Xirrus capture looks good, no issue there, however, I see that in your wireless connection you're using Public DNS, why not change the DNS'es to auto same as your LAN DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : You'll have to click on Obtain DNS address automatically....Please follow this Tutorial.

Also, it's best to use WPA2 with AES encryption for a better secured network, you're currently using WEP.

SO this is the deal, my computer keeps freezing on me and i don't know why. For the last couple of weeks it would just randomly freeze on start up, sometimes i wouldn't even be able to get to the desktop before i had to hit the restart button. i wouldn't be able to click on anything. first thing that i thought was a virus/spyware/trojan/worm, but i ran a scan on my computer AND showed that I had no viruses or anything on the system. I reinstalled windows xp (although when reinstalling windows sometimes i would have to start over because it would freeze in the middle of installation...what causes that??), and there is nothing else on my computer but the same problem keeps happening, on start up it will just freeze, sometimes not even getting to the desktop, once it gets to the desktop, i can move the moust and use the keyboard but everytime i try to go into the desktop properties or my computer it keeps freezing, BUT THEN I CAN RUN MY COMPUTER SMOOTHLY ON SAFE MODE SO WHAT SHALL I DO??????? PLEASE HELP

A:Computer freezing Windows XP but works in safe mode perfectly

Could be a faulty video card. In safe mode the card is driven by Windows default drivers. In normal mode the installed drivers for the card are used. Check the m/f site for a later driver.

Actually, it would be easier to help if you would specify the OS, SP level and hardware details. Would like a lot more history as well - how old is the PC, have there been any problems previously, have you added any recent new hardware or accessories to it, have you looked at the event log for errors, tested the memory, run chhkdsk /r on the HDD?

This computer is deffinately one for the record books. It absolutely makes no sense.

My buddy was complaining of his computer freezing up and blue screening. I took a look at it and noticed that it seemed that the video card on the motherboard was failing (because the video would turn all weird colors and everything when it froze up). We ordered him a new motherboard.

In the meantime I gave him another computer that was working fine to use while we waited for the new motherboard. When he brought it home the temporary computer was not freezing up, but it was still geting the blue screen of death. I brought the computer back to my house, plugged it in and it completely worked fine...?

Stumped, I tried to isolate the problem back at his house.

I ran the computer with only the Moniter, Power, and Keyboard.....Still Bluescreening.

I tried running the computer to a different power outlet....Still Bluescreening.
I am not going to put the new motherboard into his original computer because odds are that there is something else going on causing the problems. (because it happened to both computers).
Any ideas?

I am new here, posting with an extremely inconvienient issue. I am running Windows Vista on an HP Pavillion dv6626 laptop. My issue is that Vista is constantly freezing upon startup, without any error message or indication whatsoever. It started once every week or so, then to everyday within 30 minutes of startup. Now, its within 5 minutes sometimes the desktop doesnt even load before the freeze. After the system freezes, I have to hold down the power button to shut off the machine.

There's a couple details that lead me to belive the issue is software related and not a hardware issue. First, when the system freezes, I can still move the cursor via the touchpad, 95% of the time. I just cannot select a window, toggle between screens, or get any keyboard functionality or any other response at all. Second, I can boot up in safe mode and have all the functionality as safe mode will allow with no issues. I can also startup in Diagnostic mode with no issue at all, but again, tasks are limited.

I have deleted countless files and uninstalled probably 60% of my programs including the most recently installed ones. I've updated windows, and cleaned temporary files, and I just received extensive assistance to solve a malware issue which I beleive to be fixed. (This issue began before I had a virus issue)

So.. I'm out of ideas. I'm posting this now in Safe Mode With Networking, and hoping for some help. Thanks in advance!

Hey guys! I hope you can help me, I am getting desperate ! 2 weeks ago I got infected with a file encrypting-virus, so I gave someone my PC to clean it,format it and reinstall my windows. And now I am stuck with another problem which I used to have in the past but someone else (I don't know how) fixed it for me. No matter the size of the torrent, my PC freezes while downloading in the first 10 secs. I uninstaleed my AV, I turned my indexing off. When it freezes, in task manager-proceses, utorrent gets a value almost to 100, as well as the PC usage. And today I got a new error during the freeze, " display driver stopped responding and has recovered" . And I noticed that in safe mode this display driver isn't enabled. Do you think it has anything to do with it? Please help me! Thank you!

Hello there.
I'm looking for help. I've had some problems with my PC this month and I can't really make it work properly. It freezes/crashes/has a BSOD randomly, mostly a few minutes after it starts. It seems like it isn't caused by overheating since these errors appear independently of stress (one day I can play games for a few hours without a problem and the other day it crashes while browsing Internet).
At first, there were mostly BSODs and stuff, but it looked like it couldn’t save the memory dumps – there were no dumps seen in bluescreen viewer. Sometimes it just froze with the screen blurred and I had to restart it. After some of the crashes ‘cmos checksum bad error’ appeared while booting.
I reinstalled Windows and it seemed to be okay, but then there was a BSOD again. This is the only BSOD I can see in the bluescreen viewer. After the BSOD the bios clock was reset and I had to set it manually. I decided to clean the PC thoroughly, I even dismounted the graphical card to do it. After that, it looked like the problem was gone, but today it has crashed again. The screen went black and I couldn’t even turn it off using the power button. I had to switch it on a few times for it to run properly (before that there were only black screens and slow fans movement). When it finally turned on, there was 'cmos checksum bad error' again and it sounded weird. It was too quiet as if fans were running too slowly.
Finally, I waited a few hours and now ... Read more

I have an older laptop that is running Windows XP.  This is not my main computer but I do like to use it when I do not want to use tablet or desktop.  It virtually will not browse internet in regular windows mode.  It freezes and takes forever to go from one internet site to another.  However, the internet works fine when in safe mode.  I have Malware Anti Malware Free and AVG 2015 Free.  I have run scans in both safe mode and windows mode and it does not detect anything.  I also have CC Cleaner which I run frequently.  I have downloaded Autoruns and tried to delete some startup loads using your data base.  However, many are not in your data base.  I did find some that I could eliminate on startup but not that many because if it was not in your database, I left alone.  Do you have any other suggestions I could try.  As I said, this laptop is older and not my main computer but I would really like to try and revive it so that I can at least use it sometimes.

A:Internet freezes but works fine in safe mode Windows XP

If a client comes to me not only now but, for quite a while now, I will not let them spend time, money, effort or thought on an XP machine.  For starters they absolutely should not be used connected to the Internet.
Certainly @ this point in time, if an XP machine is not working properly, just don't bother w/ it... can't be used on the Net, anyway.  As for non-Net use, still, not worth bothering w/ it.  Time to just let it go & move on.  After 15 yrs, put it out to pasture.

I'm not a Windows whiz by any means, but I'm usually able to solve the problems I run into on my machines. This one's got me stumped:

I leave my Sony Vaio VGN-FW290J, running Windows 7 SP1, running one night while I go out for some errands. On my return, the thing has crashed pretty bad (I-can't-even-move-the-mouse bad). Whatever. I do a hard restart of the computer, decline safe mode, and the thing starts up just fine. Well, it was pretty slow, actually. Windows freezes up on me within two minutes (it's still loading up startup programs during that time). I entered into a cycle of startup, hard restart, startup, hard restart, ... until I was convinced of the permanence of the issue.

I became unhappy then, since I knew something was wrong, and this computer hadn't had a real problem in about 4 years of usage.

My first thought was to do a virus scan, so I booted into safe mode and started Avast to get cracking. Two "threats" were found in a full scan: both were very old files. I removed them and I still had the same problem.

I then deactivated every single startup program except the ones I thought were absolutely necessary. No beans. I currently have these set to autostart:
Alps pointing-device driver (Tracker Pad)
HD Audio Control panel (Audio Card)
Realtek Voice Manager (Audio Card)
Microsoft Windows Operating System
ISB Utility (Battery Utility)
Catalyst Control Center (Video Card)
I'm not really sure what to do. I haven't been able to localize the crashing to... Read more

Only until I am aable to reboot in safe mode is when I can get anything to work, however this slows my computers speed and ablities very much. A:Laptop freezes after 3-4 mins of startup, safe mode works fine

When safe mode works fine but a normal boot fails, it usually means that a driver is at fault... I would suggest that you run a disk check. You can set it up in safe mode in Computer, and right click on the C drive. Select Properties, tools, check now. Check both boxes for trying to repair... Restart normally

I have recently been experiencing in-game lag in the program/games I use; ventrilo, warcraft3, and counterstrike source. After everything I've tried, those games still lag and my computer seems fine. The last thing I can think of what might be causing the problem is that I manually deleted 2 big MMORPG files instead of uninstalling them the same day, then later that day is when I started lagging.
The lag only occurs in-game, and while I'm in vent I can see that I have a high ping

-Highly doubt that I have a virus or anything of that sort, I've had AVG for a long time and I have it run a scan everyday at 3 a.m.
-I've ran Ccleaner and cleaned up a lot of the junk on my comp.
-I've also ran a disk defrag.

Hi all - I tried installing a hard drive from my old machine into my new machine and I'm having problems.

I set my old HD to master and the new HD to slave, and this is confirmed in BIOS, where it lists the two HDs properly. But when I try to boot I get "Disk Error" and it won't boot Windows.

I tried booting with both HDs connected independently in the new machine. The new one (with Windows XP installed by Semantec Ghost) works fine by itself and the system boots. My old one still gets a disk error when it's the only one connected in the new machine.

However, when I set the new HD to master and my old HD to slave, it functions properly and I can retrieve the data on the old HD. I also confirmed that the old HD is good by putting it back into my old machine, and it boots fine.

Does anyone know what gives? Both HDs are SATA. The original HD is 250GB and the new one (the one I'd like to use as slave) is 80 GB.

Hey guys, this is a long shot but here goes.

For a long time now i have had a few issues with my internet when it comes to just a few specific applications. My Discord chat app only works 50% of the time, the rest of the time, I, aswell as everyone else in the server, sound like robots and it is impossible to use. Dota 2 - works 75% of the time, get random insane lag spikes for 30 minutes at a time where i have literally got 15 seconds delay. Counter strike CSGO - again works perfectly, except, i get randomly disconnected from the server every 20 mins. The reason im writing here is because this problem seems like its something specific, with all the above examples, every single other aspect of my internet is working perfectly fine at the time the issues are happening - the speed is at a constant 52 mb/s dl and 10 mb/s upload. Can download anything very fast, can browse any website or load any video etc etc. Any ideas what it could be?? It happens whether i am plugged in via router or directly plugged into the socket!!

ok, figured while I was looking around in this board, I might as well post about an issue I'm having when recording lets play videos on my pc.

the audio is rather glitchy and artifacty when recording the game play footage, yet when I play the recorded file back on my pc, the audio is perfectly fine in the recording. I'm wondering if maybe this is a bit of user error on my part that I'm just not aware of or something like that.

the program that I use to record my game play footage is OBS, or open broadcast system. while recording, the audio that my pc plays back to me sounds funky, glitchy, and artifacty during the actual recording, but its perfectly fine in the actual file after the fact, so I'm wondering if maybe my pc, or maybe obs is somehow trying to delay the audio, and maybe thats whats making things sound glitchy?? I legit have no clue, all I know is that it just does not sound quite right, yet always is after the recording is over and done.

anyone have any ideas, or is familiar enough with obs to know what might be going on here? I have to be honest, I have not the slightest clue whats going on that makes it sound so glitchy during the recording, yet is always fine in the recorded file after the fact.

A:glitchy audio when recording lets play videos, perfectly fine in video

I'll be honest mmd you sound like an audio nut a bit like myself. Unfortunately I don't use that software or that card and the problem to me sounds (no pun) like it could be as simple as the card slot or any cables you have hooked up in the machine and what you are hearing going in is different to what you are hearing going out could be due to something as simple as that.
So what do we do about it first obvious thing to me is to reseat that card after cleaning the slot and connectors - see this and pic.

Now as for the slots toclean them use a strip of old credit card (or any card thin enough some arebetter than others ) about 1/2 inch wide nip the corners off one end - preferably round them offhold a piece of thin lint free cloth over theend dab on some form of alcohol - isopropyl alcohol (what we swab the skin withbefore an injection) is good and GENTLYswipe along the slots.

This can also be done for the GPU slot/s andalso the contacts of the sticks or cards - not the stick but some lint freecloth of course. See my pic for the sick but please be very gentle doing it ifyou are in any doubt - please ask before doing it but I use this all the timeand have yet to damage anything
Then thoroughly check any cables and plugs sockets etc for what are known as dry joints - soldered joints that have drifted apart or cracked.

Next this could simply be the card circuitry so check it thoroughly for any caps that are bulged or have scorch marks on them or the board.

I live in a hostel where login based public wifi is provided.

I have a samsung S3 which connects to the wifi even at peak hours of traffic and gives full speed.

While when I connect through my laptop's wifi which is relatively newer than S3, it barely gives any speed, even googling is not possible. But at non peak hours when there is less traffic, sometimes it gives decent speed.

Recently I bought oneplus2 whose wifi performance is similar to my laptop's wifi performance.

All the above devices are able to connect to the wifi with atleast 3 out of 5 bars. I don't understand why when S3 gives proper speed, at the same time other device's wifi fail to perform which are relatively new. These new device's wifi should atleast perform similar to S3, if not better.

I don't have control over router's config as it is managed by hostel management. I am attaching screenshot of the Xirrus wifi inspector which gives the details about the router.

Please suggest if there is anything that I can do to improve the wifi performance on those devices.
Thanks in advance!!

This hard drive is a 40GB from way back. It works perfectly in a newly built system (I donated it after the problems started). At first, I couldn't access it anymore, so I did data recovery then tried to reformat. It was recently given back to me after a report that everything was fine, works perfectly (just a bit noisy).

In my computer, BIOS detects it as connected. Disk manager also detects it, but it shows up as not initialized, even though it was initialized & formatted in another computer. I try to initialize it, but nothing happens when I click "initialize" in the wizard. Also I noticed in BIOS its serial code is corrupted. It isn't a hex number, but @ signs, exclamation marks, etc. It changed three times on me since I have tried to get it working.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Oh, also: both my primary (works fine) and this one are on the same IDE cable, set as master and slave, respectively. Unrelated, but also strange: my CD-ROM drive disappears from My Computer some time after a restart.

Hi guys,

So around 4 weeks ago, I got a new router and internet. The internet is working great for everyone on every device except for my computer. For some reason, my internet is not consistent with its ping (and this is just on my computer, the internet works great with my iphone). It almost seems like for every 1 minute of good internet I have, I have 10 or so minutes where the internet just stinkss. I am posting this on one of those good minutes. The problem started after I, 1. Got a new graphics card, and 2. Changed my antivirus software from Avira to Malwarebytes. If you guys need any more info just ask .

- PC Chips A15G mother board, BIOS just flashed with the 2008/08/12 update
- 2x Western Digital WD10EADS 1TB hard drives set up as a RAID 1
- Fresh install of Windows XP using the F6 function to install the RAID drivers, updated to Service Pack 3
(I can provide more system information if it will help)

I just upgraded my home-built desktop from a single 80G IDE hard drive to a RAID 1 with dual 1TB SATA drives with a fresh install of XP using the F6 option and installing the required RAID drivers. The system runs great but it would not power down after shutting XP down. After flashing the BIOS with the 2008/08/12 update, things get weirder.

The machine still doesn't power down when I shut down XP, but will shut down if I hold the power button for 3 seconds or so. However, if I press the Reset button on the front of the case the machine shuts down instantly, but does not reboot. When I select "Restart" from the shut down menu, the machine shuts down instead of rebooting. Even further, if I go into the BIOS menu then exit, the machine shuts down instead of rebooting.

The XP install is new this weekend so if I need to do something major it isn't a big deal. Is there some sort of BIOS setting that I have wrong or is something corrupt? The machine ran completely normally with the 80G IDE drive.

A:Computer works fine, but will not reboot when requested

This appears to be a RAID issue, try disabling RAID and pulling one of your hard drives see if that changes anything.

Your crash dumps are not showing any finite probable cause. In such a situation, it is better to enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers.
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

Why Driver Verifier:
It puts a stress on the drivers, ans so it makes the unstable drivers crash. Hopefully the driver that crashes is recorded in the memory dump.

How Can we know that DV is enabled:
It will make the system bit of slow, laggy.

Before enabling DV, make it sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer. You can check it easily by using CCleaner looking at Tools > System Restore.

If there is no points, make a System Restore Point manually before enabling DV.

If you fail to get on the Desktop because of DV, Boot into Advanced Boot Options > Safe mode. Disable DV there. Now boot normally again, and try following the instruction of enabling DV again.

A week or two ago, I downloaded the free copy of Paragon Drive Copy. This evening, I copied my C: drive to an extra hard drive that I had on hand.

It worked perfectly. It rebooted to do the copy.

I disconnected the cable from my old hard drive and substituted the cable for the copy. Booted, and it started right up. Identical to the old drive. I am writing this while working from the copy of the original drive. In a few minutes, I am going to reconnect the old drive and put this away in case of a drive failure.

If this software is still available free, I would get it as soon as possible, even if you don't need it. If you have some future need to clone a drive, this will do the job.

I do not own any stock in Paragon nor do I have any interest in the company.

A few days ago I got a LaCie 500gb external harddrive from a friend who didn't need it anymore. When I tried to plug it in to my iMac (OS X Leopard) the hd wasn't recognized. I thought it was probably because my friend is using a PC with Windows XP, so I plugged the drive into my parents' PC (w. Windows XP as well) to reformat from NTFS.
Parents' PC doesn't recognize the external hard drive either. It reacts when I plug the drive in (makes the little pling sound), but it can't be opened from anywhere. It doesn't show among the other harddrives but I can access it to remove it.
The Device Manager gives me the message "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"

I took the hard drive back to my friend to try it on her computer. Worked just fine! We managed to remove all her old files, do a quick formatting as well as a proper one. Could only choose to stick to NTFS though.

But, at home it's still the same deal. Neither Mac nor PC recognizes the drive.

Yes, I've tried rebooting both the drive and the computers. Tried all different USB ports (which works with other external harddrives or USB sticks), nothing works.
The system requirements stated on the original packaging of the LaCie hard drive are met by both the family PC and my iMac.
Any ideas?

My computer seems to be periodically running some sort of check. I can be in outlook, IE7, or a word document as an example, and ever minute or so, the blue bar at the top of the screen with turn light colored blue, and I will hear a click, a pause, and then three more clicks. After the fourth click, the bar will return to blue and I can finished what i was working on. If I try to type during this 5 seconds or so, no keystrokes are recorded. What I don't know is how to try to diagnose what is taking over my machine every minute or so.

Funny as I write this, I just realized, my outlook checks my mail every minute, and I bet that is what's causing the clicking. I have since disabled the automatic send/receive and the clicking has stopped. I guess my question has now morphed into why would the simple act of send/receive mail cause my computer to pause so? I am running outlook 2003 on a Pentium® 4 CPU 3.00 GHz with 1.00 GB of RAM.

I appreciate anyone's thoughts!

A few days ago, I upgraded my Windows 7 laptop to Windows 10 and took Cortana for a bit of a test drive. It wasn't great but it might be useful on some occasions.

Today, I bought a brand new laptop which installed Windows 10 when I powered it on. After the installation, I was checking things out a bit and wanted to verify that Cortana was working on the new laptop. Cortana promptly told me it was not available in this region!

This makes no sense to me. I was in Southern Ontario, Canada, both times (although in different cities within the area). I can't believe that Cortana would work in London Ontario but NOT in Kitchener Ontario, which is only an hour east of London.

Does anyone have any idea how I can coax Cortana to work on the new laptop? It's not that it's a must-have app for me but it *might* be useful on occasion or even fairly often if I give it half a chance.

A:Cortana won't work on new computer; works fine on older one.

Hi, have a look at this and see if you can solve your problem.

Cortana isn't supported in the region or language you've selected. - Windows 10 Forums

Win 10 is a bit delicate and can be sensitive to some settings being changed.
There will be other posts discussing this problem- it's not uncommon.

Hello guys!

I recently built a new gaming desktop, reusing my PSU and HDD/SSD combo from my old build. All three are known good and tested as such. Here is the current parts list:

AMD Ryzen 5 1600 (NON-X version) with stock AMD branded cooler
Asrock AB350 Pro4 with newest BIOS update
Zotac GTX 960 2GB
EVGA 750 watt semi-modular PSU
Team.. something brand DDR4 memory, 2x4GB (8gb total, installed in slots A2/B2)
OSZ TRION 240G, Toshiba 1TB HDD
Thermaltake Silencer F31 case with 3 fans total plugged into motherboard fan headers (if this matters)

Every once in a while when I try and boot the computer, the motherboard will beep at me 5 times, denoting a CPU error. I have to unplug EVERYTHING from the back panel for it to actually post.

I've tried narrowing down what causes this but it just fails to post with anything plugged in. I have a Corsair K70 non-rgb keyboard, Logitech G400s mouse, ethernet, 3.5mm audio out, and DVI moniter plugged in. Nothing plugged into the front panel.

Once it does boot up, everything is just fine. Browsing about, playing video games, doing work is all just perfect. It'll last another few boot/shutdown cycles and start beeping again. Once that happens, like I said before I have to unplug everything and try again.

What would cause this to happen? I still have all the receipts for these parts as it's only been 2 weeks that I've built this, so if needed I can return/exchange parts for new ones. Under load the GPU temp stays under ... Read more
