Performance option problem

Q: Performance option problem

Hi new here just signed up

Im having a problem with my performance options and windows aero.

ok well it all started i did a system rating where you update your score on your computer, then i shut down my computer for the night then the next day i turned it on and ever since then my theme keeps changing to windows classic
then i'll go to sysdm.cpl a change it to "adjust for best appearance" then that fixes the problem but as soon as i restart my computer were back where we started with the classic and it changing to custom under performance options on its own, and when i turn my computer on it's not classic right away when i turn it on but it just changes to classic out of nowhere and when im booting my computer up it says please wait with the little circle spinning then it goes to the log in screen, just in case that may have something to do with it and its never done that untill i did that system rating.

please help

my computer is

windows vista home premium
service pack 2
32 bit

Preferred Solution: Performance option problem

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a W8 64 PC, when I got to Power Options there is no "High Performance" just Balanced and Power Saver,
when I go to "Change Advanced Power Settings" the drop down box has "High Performance" but I cannot get it set to be the power setting I use.

How do I get High Performance as my Power setting?

A:W8 64, how to get High Performance option.

Hello Daniel,

Double check using the tutorial below to see if it may be able to help. You should able to click on the "Show additional plans" arrow to then be able to see "High Performance" to select (dot) it as your default power plan.

Everytime my computer boots, the performace option dialog box comes up. Thi is the box that has to do with virtual memory. For some reason it has no paging file. I went ahead and checked system managed then at top checked automatically manage paging files for all drives. but when I reboot everything is cleared back to no paging file. So right now everytime I boot I get this dialog box popping up and cant figure out how to get it to stop. I looked through all the startups including the registry and did a clean boot and also tried in safe mode and nothing is working. Tried Microsoft tech and they are basically useless.

When Task Manager/Monitor starts there are no tabs/options at the top of the display to choose Applications, or Performance, ... etc. There is no 'title' line - thus no 'red X' at top right to close the application. Other programs/applications work as expected.

I used Sysinternals Process Explorer to kill the Task Manager (Restart works but takes much too long).

Worked yesterday (shut down PC overnight) - didn't install anything yesterday or today (programs or Win patches).

Only glitch yesterday was when my wife dusted the keyboard - the display ended up rotated. Finally right clicked desktop and chose Graphics options -> Rotate 90 degrees. Display was put back to normal and I used the PC for > 2 hours with no problem.

(Forgot to mention - have had Win 7 for several months - no problems - use Performance monitor to determine when boot is finished.)

A:Task Manager/Monitor - No Performance Option

Might be malware trying to disable task manager. Since you mentioned that you use it a lot, maybe you tinkered with
something that's causing this. Are you using any third or customized windows themes?

Any help?

A:Unable to change from 'High Performance' power option

For starters, Try sfc /scannow. Another easy to apply attempt at fixing is automatic repair. There are other possibilities, but none more appealing. Incidentally, how long have you had the problem? Did it begin, as far as you know, about the same time you did a significant installation, made a significant change, etc? If not too long ago, then you might be able to system restore out of the problem--without also uninstalling too many programs. You can find system restore in all programs/application, (or whatever its called) in metro. For example, go to start screen, and open all programs/applications.

As the title implies, my HP Pavilion dv6 running Windows 7 HomePremium 64bit goes >80% CPU usage at that option. While when I changed it to "HP Recommended" option it goes normal again.

It's not like I have a problem with the "HP Recommended" settings, but it's just wierd: just changing the screen brightness and no-sleep setting could make CPU Usage >80%?

Anyone knows why did this happen? I just got my HDD changed by warranty 1 week ago so the windows is still fresh + added MalwareBytes.

A:>80% CPU usage at "High Performance" power option

I think it's a thing to do with Intel CPUs. AMD have a technology called 'Cool & Quiet' and it means that when there's no demand for a high clock, the frequency will automatically go down. I think enabling 'High Performance' mode in the battery options since they clock cannot go anywhere, the usage will increase.
It's only from personal experience that it seems to be Intel, I've never heard of this problem from AMD CPU users. I think it's just OK to leave the power mode to 'Balanced'. This way, it won't waste power.

Hopefully there's an answer out there. I'm a long time Firefox user currently using Version 14.0.1 on a PC with W7 64bit.
Since taking the upgrade to version 14, I no longer have the option to pin the shortcut to the task bar of start menu but have to be content with the shortcut on the desktop. When right clicking on the shortcut, I no longer see the traditional option of where to pin the shortcut. I've gone back as far as Version 10.0 but the option is no longer there either.

Any ideas on what's happened or how to solve this mystery?

As a workaround, you can use one of the default power plans and adjust it's settings to what you need and use it instead. Hopefully that will work better for you.

First (to rule things out), make sure you have "display the contents of system folders" and "show hidden files and folders" checked, and "hide protected operating system files" UNchecked.

Someone had a malware that made hidden and superhidden file settings unavailable a
few months back. I ended up digging out the registry keys and writing a registry script for him.
If you're still experiencing the problem, try the registry script in the other thread.

Ok guys I've got a tricky one for you. I've been to alot of other forums with this one and I am out of ideas so I am really hoping someone here is smarter then me which isnt very hard by my experience =)
I am a network admin for a smaller company. One of our sales guys recently started having the infamous "Windows is blocking access to this file for your protection" error when he tries to extract files from a .zip that is sent automatically from one of our sister companies. It says you can go to properties and click "unblock" which of course I did and which of course makes absolutely no difference. When he double clicks the zip it appears empty. When he clicks "extract all files" it gives the old Blocking this file error mentioned previously. I searched around google and read a couple suggested fixs and nothing has worked. I tried a Registry entry that marks certain files as low risk. I made sure he is a local admin of his machine. I logged in as domain admin and tried it myself...same result. I am kind of at a loss here and he really needs to be able to view and extract zip files. Could it be an update he got and installed? As of right now we dont yet have SMS or WSUS so users pretty much get to pick their own updates (I know its dumb but I just started.). It cant really be a group policy because everyone operates under the same policy and it works fine for them. He is running Windows Xp Pro SP2. Any advice someone smarter then me co... Read more

I have a problem in retrieving files and folders that I hid. I suspect that this is due to the same virus which has infected already also causing drives to disolay "open with" window when double clicked it. I was opening my drives through Windows explorer instead. But I still need the double click option. Is there a way to remove this virus and to get my PC back to the original healthy state. A:Problem in Hidden Folder option

If you have a virus, scan with your AV and remove it. Use another online scan, just to be sure, like TrendMicro. And since most bad guys are not viruses, you also need to scan with at least 2 anti-malware programs.

Free anti-malware scanners:
Spybot S&D
Ad-Aware 2007
Spyware Eliminator
Emco Malware Destroyer
Spyware Doctor
Arovax Anti-spyware
Trend-Micro Rootkit Buster
F-Secure Blacklight

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit on my HP 6910p Laptop. The power plan options were working absolutely fine, but suddenly it has started to act weird. When I used to select a power option For instance , when I click High Performance: The brightness used to be full (As I Configured this plan to have max screen brightness) and when I used to switch to Power Save: The brightness used to be lowest (As I configured this plan to have lowest screen brightness)
However, now, when I switch between the plans, nothing happens. For instance, if I click high performance, the brightness remains the same as clicking the power save plan. Also, If I choose High Performance power plan and lower its brightness, and then click on power save the brightness remains same as the high performance. So, Apparently, there is no change.

Hello ragavendrang.

I would suggest that after you have copied out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media you use Step One of this tutorial at the link below to do a wipe (secure erase) to the entire Hard Disk Drive, running this then using the outline in Step Two #2 to create and format a single 100GB partition using diskpart will get you a clean all and a chkdsk /r for the best possible space to install Windows to.

After you have made backups of everything you care to save and you want to do a real wipe "clean all" to the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) have a look at this tutorial at the link below, it over-writes everything, all the old Windows code including all the old Windows drivers, giving you the best possible space to install Windows 7 to; it goes hand-in-hand with a clean install.

Hello everyone. I have been having an ongoing problem with my computer and I have asked for advice many times, and haven't really gotten any answers. Basically the problem is simple. When I click on a link in firefox, firefox opens it in a new window. This isn't right, it should open in the same tab. This also happens just by pressing the back button. This problem also effects the desktop. When I will select a single program, a cluster of programs around it get selected as well. Today this problem happened again, but I noticed something different about it. When I went to restart my computer (it generally works normally after that) I saw that my usual options of "Standby" "Turn Off" and "Restart" were replaced with "Hibernate" "Turn Off" and "Restart." I'm not sure what it means or if the problem is serious, but it is quite frustrating so if anyone can help shed some light on the issue, please do!

Oh and I was told before that my problem could be that my control key is stuck, but I have cleaned the key and it has been unstuck.

Hey guys, I have nooticed as of late that my computer "lags" after it has been left on for a while.

Basically every 3-5 second it hangs for a millisecond then is fine. It does it constantly. I have picture of my task manager, it shows these very odd spikes in the cpu. The following picture was taken at complete idle. I noticed that just before it hangs, my crss.exe proccess hops up to the second positon then back down if I sort by cpu column. I am guessing this is what is causing this pause. Things become normal after reboot though.

How can I fix this? What is the problem?

I am using XP SP2, this is 2 week old clean format install, with all windows updates. I rana virus scan and spyware scan with no results.
