I just received my thinkpad P71 yesterday and I'm using it right now. Immediately off the bat, I removed the Hard drive in favor of a far better one. I'm curious to know does the keyboard require any special drivers for the backlit keyboard to work? I assume that it works similiarly to the W541 Backlit keyboard in which I hit Fn + Space Bar, it should work right? Well, currently it is not working. Keep in mind that this is on a Fresh install of Windows, does it need drivers to work? Thanks!

Hello everybody, just purchased a Z50-70 and am pleased so far. However, the A**zon product specifications stated it would have a backlit keyboard (bought the 59424714). Up to now I have not been able to switch it on (Fn+space doesn't work) and/ or find any settings for it. Can anybody help? Thanks in advance!
Make sure all drivers are installed and up to date, also check bios settings just to double check everything is ok in there.

Read other answersAfter installing an ssd recently, the backlighting on my keyboard no longer works. Every other button on the keyboard works normally, including the other built in function keys like mute, brightness, etc. I might have messed up some connection, but I didn't take the keyboard off at all to install the ssd, which was installed without issue itself. Another thought is that it might be a driver, since its a fresh drive and windows install. I don't really know what to look for though, so any thoughts you might have to help would be appreciated.

Read other answersI have a new Dell XPS 13 Linux edition (this one) and immediately installed Linux Mint 18 on it, wiping the Ubuntu 14.04 which was shipped with the it.
I am really confident with it, only the backlight for the keyboard is not working. I have a keyboard light symbol on my F10 key but when I press it, nothing happens. All other features and all other media controls/media keys/screen brightness keys work. When clicking the battery icon in the Linux Mint taskbar, I see 2 controls, one for the keyboard lights brightness and one for the screen brightness. When I drag those bars, only the screen brightness is working again.
I also see the settings in /sys/class/leds/dell\:\:kbd_backlight/ (I think that's the config folder for it). The brightness file in this directory contains "1", so as I understand this correctly, this should theoretically work.
As I noted before I immediately installed Linux Mint on it, so I can't say whether it worked before. And this is really the only thing which is not working on the laptop.
I have obviously checked that my ultrabook has backlights with the product number on its back.
Do you have some tips so I can get this to work? Thanks in advance!
Hello..
I have the S50-B-15P model with Windows 10 installed. I never checked if the backlit keyboard worked on Windows 8.1, as soon as I got it I upgraded to Windows 10.
I have installed all the drivers from the Toshiba Windows 10 upgrade page however as before the keyboard works just not backlit!
I opened the eco utility software and checked for the keyboard backlit settings under eco mode however it does not exist and no setting exists in the BIOS either. The keyboard does have the symbol to enable the backlit function on the Z key however pressing FN + Z does nothing.
Does anybody have any ideas on how to fix this? Does the keyboard even have this function or is it faulty?
Thanks, Craig

No drivers are needed. If you have a backlit keybiard and it doesn't light, you have a defective keyboard.

Hello I am having issues with my HP ENVY x2 - 13-j000na (ENERGY STAR). The keyboard will only work when attached to the screen in a very specific position. Changing the angle of the screen results ini it disconnecting and being unable to reconnect. When not attached to the screen it will not work at all.I still have warranty and would really like this sorted ASAP as it is incredibly annoying. I've tried all the recommendations of updating BIOS and drivers etc and still nothing. Can anyone help? Thanks.
It's a hardware issue and is going to have to be addressed by making a warranty claim. There is no adjustment or quick setting fix we can provide.
Read other 3 answersI have recently replaced my laptop's bezel. Since then backlit is not working even though the settings are correct. Could this issue be due to bezel replacement. If yes, please suggest how to resolve it
I assume that removed both the keyboard and palm rest first to remove the LCD assembly and finally the LCD bezel. I would go back and check the keyboard and make sure that both the keyboard data and back lite cables are connected correctly. The manual doesn't show a back lit keyboard, but on back lit keyboards there are two cables that will need to be connected.

Hi,
I have a Latitude E5570. It did not come with a backlit keyboard. I purchased a dell laptop keyboard with backlit function. Installed it fine (noticed the extra ribbon cable that I assume is for the power for the backlight.
The F10 key includes the FN icon to enable backlight. But it is not working. Checking the bios, there is no setting as per the manual to enable the backlight. There are the two settings for how long before it times out either on AC or battery though.
Does anyone have any ideas? Is there a dell software I can install on windows 7 to enable this?
Thanks!
Hello everyone,
I am a new user and I am really desperate to get the backlit keyboard working on my Satellite P850, normally it wouldn't be a problem but I spend a lot of time in low light situations and it would be so very helpful to me, it was also a feature that swayed me to purchase a model laptop with the ability to have a backlit keyboard.
If anyone could help me,I would be forever grateful
Thank you
I bought a backlit keyboard for my p50 from an online reseller (part# SN20K85143/ FRU 00PA317) because I thought having a backlit keyboard would be nice, and the price was good second hand (looks like new, seller said he prefered non lit version hence sale). I didn't have the time to replace the keyboard and it got left for a few months in the box, you know how it is sometimes ! So I installed the keyboard today (finally) and everything went fine. Boot into the OS and everything looks grand. Backlights work, function options work. I then do a quick keyboard test in note pad and I discover that some keys do not work. Specifically [T,Y,P,[,], and delete keys, also Up, down arrows) . I reseated the connector ribbons to check if the problem was there, same issue on reboot. I put back my original keyboard and that worked fine (using it now), so I hadn't damaged the connectors on the logic board. I wonder if thier is some mapping incompatability ? I couldn't find a similar issue on the forum. Helpful suggestions please ? ty
I think the new keyboard is defective.

Hi Hildo,
E-series Latitude portable systems have the option of a backlit keyboard. With the E3 series keyboard, there are several ways to set the backlit keyboard illumination. One can either press <FN> + <Right Arrow> to adjust the illumination. The other way is to adjust the illumination through Dell Control Point (DCP). From the main DCP screen, choose ‘Keyboard Backlight’. The settings you can adjust are as follows:
Brightness:-
0%(Off)
25%
50%
75%
100%
Activation Settings:-
Keyboard light will automatically time out if there is no activity for certain time frame where the setting can be preset from 5 seconds up to 5 minutes.
Resume lighting from time out with default option as 'Keyboard'. This means whenever user presses any key on the keyboard, the keyboard backlight will light up provided the brightness is not set to 0%(Off). The other option available is 'All internal input devices'. If this option is chosen, other internal input devices like the touchpad, will also turn on the keyboard backlight on one touch.
You can also install Dell control point for your computer from link: http://dell.to/XDJhTF
Steps to download:-
Click on “Download Now”.
Save the driver on your desktop.
Once the driver is downloaded on the desktop, right click on it and select “Run as administrator”.

First of all the support section on Lenovos website must be the most confusing I've ever experienced. I can't find anywhere to send a simple email asking a question. Hi, architect7
Be sure to hold the Fn key while pressing the Spacebar to turn on the backlit keyboard. If you have already tried this to no avail, then I would recommend checking some BIOS settings. To enter BIOS, reboot the machine. When it is powering back up and you see the Lenovo splash screen, tap the Enter key repeatedly. A menu should appear. When it does, press F1 to enter BIOS. Once here, navigate to Config ? Keyboard/Mouse and check the settings of Fn and Ctrl Key swap and Fn Key Lock. For purposes of this test, make sure they are both set to Disabled. Once done, press F10 to save and exit. The machine should now boot normally. Log in to Windows and try to activate the backlight again and see if that works.
Best of luck,
Adam

After updating to windows 10 I noticed that the keyboard backlit didn't turn on no matter if I was pressing FN+Space bar. After several months of trying to solve this problem I came in contact with Microsoft tech support and I was told that my system doesn't seem to be compatibe with Windows 10 and I should downgrade back to Windows 8 in order to solve this problem. After doing that and installing many updates and drivers it still doesn't work. It would be greatly appreciated if someone can help.

It's something that you don't appreciate enough until you lose it... :) So I got a new backlit keyboard for it and installed it, but it still doesn't work.I wonder if it could be a problem that's unrelated to the keyboard itself - maybe some motherboard issue / bios bug / whatever. Or maybe the new keyboard I got has its backlit feature broken.Any ideas? Please note it's been my computer for a while now, so I know all about how to activate it (alt+right arrow / bios setting). also note that it doesn't work even before the OS loads, where it used to work perfectly earlier.Thank you very much!
Read other answersHi all, I recently purchased a T460s with some upgrades on the specifications (RAM 16 GB, GPU GeForce 930M and etc.). The initial operating system was set to Windows 7, so I upgraded to Windows 10 64 bit. I manually downloaded all the drivers required for this laptop and windows 10. While everything else runs pretty well, the keyboard backlight does not seem to work. I haven't checked if the backlight works on the previous operating system, so I am unsure if the problem is actually from the hardwares or if the OS was updated wrong. I am pretty sure that this model supports the keyboard backlit function since the space bar has that little image on the left side that (I'm guessing) indicates the function of backlit keyboards. I'm wondering if there are actual drivers that I must intall prior to pressing the (Fn+Spacebar) keys to turn on the backlight, or if there is a problem with my computer. If it's the case of the latter, I am thinking about resetting my laptop (reinstalling windows 10). Being aware of how long it takes to download and install all the necessary components, once I do, is there any method of backing up the computer and after the reset just using that backup to go back to the original state where I have all my programs and data? Thanks.

When you start the notebook and before Windows loads does the keyboard light up? You can also check in safemode, start the system while tapping F8 and choose safemode. Log on to Windows, at any time in this process is the backlit on? If not then there is likely a problem.
If you aren't able to get the backlit on anymore no matter what you try please shoot me a private message. No problem. Backlight keyboard is just swapped in - no other parts.
