Which one to choose - ThinkPad W520 or T530?

Q: Which one to choose - ThinkPad W520 or T530?

Hello all, I have a real difficulty choosing between these two W520 and T530. Both are used and prices close. The main differences are listed as below: (1) CPUW520 i7-2720QMT530 i5-3320M(2) Graphics and displayW520 Nvidia graphics card (Quadro 2000) with FHDT530 Intel 4000 with 1600x900 (3) PriceW520 is $60 more than T530. I am planning to use the laptop mostly for word processing, spreadsheet, PowerPoint presentation in classroom, HD video watching, no video editing. Any advice or helpful information will be appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

For those tasks you wouldn't need a Core i7 or discrete graphics, save yourself some money and go for the T530.The only disadvantage would be 1600x900 instead of 1920x1080, but it would be hard to see the difference.

I have a problem with my ThinkPad T530 model 2429NL6, on which Win 10 is running.I purchased a data SIM card and inserted it into the SIM card slot, but I can't connect to the data network.I can't understand if the modem is missing, if the modem is present but the driver is missing, or if it's a problem installing the network in Win 10.How can I move around?(I ask for a simple language in the answer, as I am an inexperienced user)Thanks

Hi all! I'm a new Thinkpad user and I've got to say, the Thinkpad experience is great. It's refreshing to come to a laptop with more features and better accessibility compared to other laptop brands. I love that nearly every inch of my Thinkpad is easy to get to and fix if something goes wrong. That said, I've been having screen issues lately.  Basically, every time I move the Thinkpad off my lap and onto my bed, the screen slightly ripples in the middle. Like this, except it occurs towards the lower middle half of the screen. Gently pressing on the bezels of the screen (left and right) also cause ripples in the same area (lower middle half)--maybe this is supposed to happen, since you're deliberately pressing against the screen. Moving the screen up or down also makes the ripple occur. I always move my screen back and forth as gently and firmly as I can--with both hands gripping either side of the screen. But even when I'm being super careful, the screen still ripples. Tapping the back of the screen ever so slightly also causes ripples. Now that's what's worrying me the most. A gentle, slight tap shouldn't cause ripples on the screen, surely. The ripples get BIG if I tap the lower middle of the Thinkpad's lid. I can't say that I've noticed this behaviour before. It seems to have started just recently. I removed the screen's plastic frame and cleaned the sides of the LCD, thinking that something was stuck between the frame and the LCD, but doing ... Ok, so here's a long story. Purchased a Thinkpad T530 5 years ago. Configured it with two drives that came from Lenovo (one in main HDD bay, another one in Ultrabay - one was IIRC Hitachi and the other one Toshiba, can't remember which was installed in which bay). OS was Windows 8 Home (installed on HDD in main bay) which I sported for a only few weeks since I was confronted with Ultrabay HDD constantly (every 5-10 minutes) parking its head (clicking noise). Being unable to successfully resolve the issue I decided to ditch Windows 8 and install Windows XP 32-bit (also on the main bay HDD). Problem? Gone. In the meantime, I decided to sport a dual-boot system and installed Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit)  on the Ultrabay HDD (in the meantime I replaced the Ultrabay HDD that came from Lenovo with a WD 7500BPKT drive). Problem? None whatsoever, probably because the HDD was constantly in use since it had a OS (which became my main OS) installed on it. Fast forward to a few days ago. Bought a Crucial MX300 2TB 2.5'' SSD and installed it into the main HDD bay. Purchased a SAMSUNG 850 EVO mSATA SSD and installed it into the mPCIE slot. Left the WD 7500BPKT HDD in Ultrabay. Installed Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) onto Samsung mSATA SSD and? Problem with Ultrabay HDD constantly (not as frequently as other people using AHCI+Windows+Intel Rapid Storage drivers were reporting though - once every 5-10 minutes in my case vs once every minute or so as reported by other users) parkin... Greetings - I have a Lenovo T530 Laptop - Windows 10 installed. Each time I attempt to shut down the laptop, the laptop automatically restarts itself. I replaced that power jack because the power button also wasn't working either. I had this same problem regardless of whether Windows 7 or 10 was on it. I have 10 and loaded most Lenovo Drivers, including any with management, chipset. Also, the power options are reset to default - that didn't make any difference either. According to the diagnostics tests, there are no hardware issues. It is only happening on this particular T530 - not have been able to replicate the same problem on others. Any ideas?? Thank you in advance!

Hi, my T530 has recently starting giving me trouble rebooting in regular mode. Whereas I can reboot in safe mode, I do not even reach the initial login screen when I attempt to start-up regularly. All I get is a black screen with a visible cursor. Any ideas where this is coming from and what problems I have?

A:Thinkpad T530 not starting in regular mode

Most likely a bad driver since in Safe Mode windows uses generic drivers.   My guess would be the video driver, so while in Safe Mode, use device manager to uninstall the existing video driver and start clean. Right click on Start and select Device Manager or Start >> Run and type: devmgmt.msc  and press EnterClick on Display Adapters to openRight Click on the Intel HD Graphics and select Uninstall,  making sure to check the box to "Delete the driver software for this device".RebootIf it was the video driver, then Windows should boot normally using a generic driver, and then download and install a new driver via Windows Update. Since it just started, running a disk check (chkdsk) would be a good idea too.Right Click on Start and select Command Prompt (Admin) and press EnterIn the Command Prompt (Admin) window, type:   chkdsk C: /f   and press EnterPress Y to accept scheduling scan for next bootReboot and it will run at startupGood Luck,

Then I took off the original 320G HDD and put my 830 SSD on it, reinstalled the win8 and blah blah blah.Just last night when I tried to chat with my parents on skype i found out the the camera is dead. I tried by doing so:1) according to others threads I uninstall most of the unnecessary drivers;2) reinstall the camera driver;3) deleted the ricoh media driver;4) updated the BIOS;5) tired to locate someone mentioned, the "privacy" problem. But the video/camera option is not even showing up by Fn+F6;6) downloaded and installed the thirdparty AMCAM and it says no camera device can be found.  Please let me know if there is anything else i can do. Thank you ,

I've been trying to find a solution for two full dsays now.My problem:Yesterday morning my t530 windows 10 (upgrade from 8.1) did not open normally. Slow booting and once in Windows, no more audio or wifi or access to startup menu. I did have two upgrades this week, one from Windows 10 and another for the new Bitdefender 2017 upgrade which I accepted. I don't know for sure if there is a link but I suspect there is. I have intented doing a refresh, reset from the diagnostic page and form the prompt page a scan and scannow but to no avail. I downloaded on a bootable USB flash drive rufus windows 10. I have disables secure boot and enabled legacy. When I do an F12 I see the nane of my USB HDD in the list, but when i press enter it just goes back to the top the Boot Menu screen to Windows Boot manager. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't use rufus.  I suggest making the USB stick in UEFI mode from a computer running with a UEFI boot using the MS media creation tool:

You can boot from the USB stick in UEFI mode.

Hello all,  I just got a Thinkpad Mini Dock 3 with the USB 3.0 port. However, the dock port does not work with my W520 (which has USB 3.0 on it). The dock port does work with my X220 (yes, old school), however (which also has 3.0 port). So, the fault is not the dock, but some kind of issue between the W520 and the Mini Dock. I've uninstailled and reinstalled the 3.0 hub driver, updated drivers, and searched everywhere but cannot find a fix. Can anyone offer a suggestion on how to fix this issue? Thanks kindly,Dylan

Hello,I understand that this question was probably asked a million times, but unfortunately I haven't found a viable solution for my problem. I'll try to describe it in details. I bought a pre-owned W520 laptop, that's supposed to have a Windows 7 Pro. For some reason, the previous owner removed the COA sticker, that was located under the battery. The hard disk is also wiped clean, so no recovery partition is available. I want to install and activate a geniune Windows 7. Some pirated copy of windows is installed there, I tried to extract a license key with Belarc Advisor, but it was some generic OEM key found on the internet, i.e. not genuine. The summary of my talk with the local support and service center- I can't just install any copy of Windows 7 (say download an image from Microsoft), it won't activate without a COA key that is missing- if I can get a recovery media for this exact laptop, it will maybe activate from the key in BIOS- we don't know where to get this recovery media so if someone could help me with these questions- can I legally download a recovery image for this laptop (I only found some links for windows 10 downgrade, which I'm not eligible for)- can I extract the key from BIOS and maybe install a generic Windows 7 - is there even an OEM key in BIOS (because the guys from support center told me it's only for windows 8 and 10, not for 7) and will it activate? thanks in advance. Oleg.

I had been having a problem with my laptop that makes the screen reddish for almost a year. I tried everything - creating, setting, deleting Windows color profiles, updating drivers, disabling drivers... I got a bit desperate and started disabling services and processes until I disabled the following process:...and my screen was suddenly OK. Notice how the screenshot is also reddish. This again is due to that little **bleep**. I don't know what it does but it even manages to crap all over screenshots, not just the display. After I found that this caused the trouble, I deleted all of it at this location:C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\ImController\PluginHost Now everything works fine and I can see white on my screen for the first time in a year.

Hello,I will write first what my goal is. I recently upgraded to Windows 10 when installing a new Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB and now my internal SD card reader which I think is a Ricoh will not work when I insert a SD above 4GB, it works for smaller cards.  I have tried installing the drivers from the Lenovo KB and my Windows Troubleshooter says all drivers for that device are up to date.  One thing that I have noticed is that when I insert the card the Ricoh device pops up, but also responds with an uninstalled PCI Serial Port.  I do not know what device this is, but it doesn't show up unless an SDHC card is inserted and remains after I take it out, but when I do a restart it has disappeared and it is not there if I insert a 4gb SD card first.  Another thing I have noticed is that the card does pop up in the Disk Management utility, but it is unreadable.  I have checked the card on cameras and a friend's computer and know that it works and is not corrupted.  See pics below and the PCI serial port ID # and you can see my frustration... hopefully someone can help fix this issue, I need to read SDHCs for work all the time and would prefer not to have to buy a peripheral device to do the job...

Hey this is my first post as I'm new here. I have been having an issue which has been going on for several months.

Every 30 minutes, to the second, my laptop completely shuts down (I have tried running in safe mode too). No matter what programs are running, or aren't, it continues to shut down.

I have made a work-around, where I put the computer to sleep roughly every 28 minutes, then I wake it. This seems to reset the 'timer'. Lately it seems my computer will not sleep properly, or it will not wake from sleep (power button starts slowly blinking, not pulsing, green to black), however I think this is a different unrelated issue.

Things I have tried but have NOT worked: Running without battery, re-seating RAM, new thermal paste (I thought the problem originally had to do with the system temperature as it was getting quite hot), I have made sure there are NO TIMERS for sleep, or shut down set for the graphics card (NVIDIA Quadro 2000M) or in Lenovo Power Manager. I have made sure my drivers are up to date and that my BIOS is also up to date.

One more noteworthy thing; I had problems with my WMI event registration/viewer as it caused my computer to crash at completely random (minutes to hours, even to days) times. I ran a script I found (from a reputable website and I did a backup first) to fix this error I found in my event viewer (it did fix it). The 30 minute shut-downs did not happen immediately after I ran the script, but rather about a week later, perhaps t... Read more

I am going under the assumption that this page is right in telling me what the most up to date driver for my system is (I have a Quadro 1000M). Both Lenovo Vantage and System Update tell me there are no updates, and yet my most recent NVidia driver was from 2016 and several versions behind what the website says. No matter how many times I've downloaded and installed that package the driver stayed the same, so I gave up and used DDU to wipe the NVidia drivers out. Then I tried using the package again to install the driver and still it appears to do absolutely nothing regarding the NVidia Card. It doesn't appear under Device Manager. Mock me if you like, , but...  Figured I would share, so others might benefit? There are a few flavours of AC Power issue out there (some bad 170W Power Supplies, some Lenovo Battery Manager issues, etc.), but if you are greeted with the warning on your W520, and are using a true 170W Power Supply, stop and check the Power Supply plug connection IN to the dock. I know sounds ridiculous, but...  First, given the slotted construction of the 170W Power Supply connector, NEVER force anything!  But, once you've lined that up, are sure and slid it in to the dock, at that point, make SURE that it's really fully seated in to the connector!  PUSH it to ensure! I've been having the issue, and finally realized, on my setup, there is an extra "hump" you have to push the connector past. (How long have I had this machine?  FACEPALM!)  If you plug it in, it will work, but give errors and be problematic on charging.  Once you FULLY plug it in, that problem goes away. I think it's a function of the middle pin not being fully and properly seated - so a test was failing (making it think it was a 90W supply?). And a PS for folks: The original dock for the W520 was the "4338-30U (eSATA)", 170W. I can report that the "4338-35U (USB 3.0)", 170W DOES in fact work with the W520. Sadly (as I expected), no, you don't get another USB 3.0 port on the back of the dock.  It de-rates to a USB 2.0 port, but that port does work -... Hi. I can't get the webcam to work. I got this laptop around mid June of this year. Tried to use the webcam for the first time today, Nothing. My device manager doesn't even list a camera. I tried to intall the driver (twice) to see if that would help, but as far as I can see, it's had exactly 0 effect. I downloaded the lenovo settings app, and it's not there, either. At least, I see no setting options for it. But this model of laptop supposedly has a webcam built in, and my model looks pretty much exactly like the others I see on google images, except for a circly light thing in the strip where the camera is supposed to be. I have no idea what the hardware/wiring should even look like so I can't help there. I've been at this for hours. At this point I would just buy a webcam off Amazon or something if I could be sure that the laptop would actually register it.

I have a Lenovo Type 4337 Mini Dock Series 3 docking station with a 90W AC adapter: P/N 75Y5732FRU P/N 75Y5733S/N M3-B9XDV Acccording to the Docks, Port Replicator, Ultrabase - Reference Guide (*) a T530 Quad Core is not supported with the Lenovo Type 4337 Mini Dock Series 3 docking station while, according to (*) the ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 - 170W is supported - though T530 is not mentioned on the ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 - 170W - Overview and Service Parts page. When comparing the Overview and Service Parts page of both docks: ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3 - 90W and ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 - 170W it seems the only difference is the AC adapter, number of video ports and an eSATA connector. 1) Is this correct? 2) If so, can a T530 Quad Core be used on a Type 4337 Mini Dock Series 3 with a 170W (or 135W) AC adapter (instead of the 90W AC adapter)? 3) As the 4337 Mini Dock Series 3 is supported with a Thinkpad X220, is there any objection against docking using a 170W AC (or 135W) adapter?

Dear Community,As the title suggests, I did a full system reset recently. That was because my old HDD seemed to start dying and slowing down the system a lot.Now I have a brand new HDD (Seagate firecuda 2TB) and installed everything I found on the Lenovo support page for my System (4284-4DG) after installing all important Windows updates. So far so good - I guess. At least Lenovo Service Bridge/System Update don't suggest any further software. But I'm facing some issues already:1) The Hotkey Feature Integration seems not to work! Not only do I not see any OSD, but also half of the Fn+FXX combinations aren't working (like Fn+F5 - Fn+F8, Fn+F2, Fn+F3...).2) I can therefore not access the Communications Utility (unless searching the .exe) nor the Connections Tab (F5). In the latter one Bluetooth isn't even listed (but always on)3) The Power Manager is very limited in functionality like I do not have a Battery Management button nor can I adjust the default screen brightness in the Energy Profiles. I remember that this was very possible before.4) The Device Manager shows still unknown objects: PCI-Communication Controller (simple)(? => loose translation from German, maybe slightly different English name) and an unknown device. As said before, I installed every driver I could find in the list from Lenovo. I have no clue what this could be.5) Windows Update shows me some optional Updates which I did not install yet, because I always read that one should install drivers from the PC ... Read more

I'm living in South Korea and using Thinkpad X1 Carbon (3rd Gen).I'm considering upgrading to 256gb SSD as my current 128gb one is almost filled up to the limit. There are a number of products from many different companies with a wide range of prices.  Could you let me know which specifications that I have to look at in choosing a new SSD compatible with my X1?  I would greatly appreciate if any expert is able to tell me about that.Thank you!  C.K.

Hello all, I am looking to buy a ThinkPad W530 from eBay.  I found two options for CPU from all the online listings, Intel i7-3520M or i7-3740QM.  I am not asking about the differences about the two CPUs, which I can find online.  My questions are: Can we tell which edition is newer/later?  Or, does the difference result from customizations? I would like to choose the newer model, in the hope that it is also the better or improved version. Any insider's info will be appreciated.

A:Which one to choose: ThinkPad W530 CPUs

They are both 4 - 5 years old.  The i7-3520m is 2 core and the i7-3740QM is 4-core.  The 3520 has a faster clock speed and will run faster single-threads.  The 3740 will run more threads at once.  The dual-core can address 16GB of memory (2X8gb) The quad core cpu will address 4X8gb

Hi My T530 will not boot properly. I think that there is some software glitch on my T530 hard drive stopping it booting. It was installed with Windows 10. I tried all the blue screen functions including refresh whilst maintaining files. None worked.I also have a T470 with Windows 10 installed.I would like to download the files from the T530 hard drive before reinstalling Windows 10. I do not have an external hard drive caddy and would rather not have the expense of buying one - otherwise I would just put the drive in that and copy the files.I would like to put the SSD hard drive from the T470 into the main bay of the T530 to see whether it all works ok and if so to put the the old hard drive from the T530 in a caddy in the ultrabay to get the files off it, before then reinstalling it using a system image on a portable hard drive. Will this scheme work? Can I take the hard drive from the T470 and put it in the T530 and expect the T530 to function? Can I do any damage thereby? Thanks for your help Dan

I am assuming you haven't accidently muted the speakers or lowered volume. some suggestions: First, if you haven't done it, reboot. Look in device manager for sound devices, reinstall drivers. check event log
