Headphones dont play sound on laptop.

Q: Headphones dont play sound on laptop.

I have a HCL laptop with Windows 8 Pro x86 installed. Whenever I connect my headphones I don't get any sound from it. I have gone to my "Playback Devices" and selected "Show Disabled Devices" and the headphones are not listed there. What can I do to work around this problem ? I need my headphones to play sound. Should I update my audio driver? I upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 8 with migrating all my settings. I am using VIA HD Audio Deck as my default sound driver. Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Headphones dont play sound on laptop.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Headphones dont play sound on laptop.

Check with the PC vendor for any drivers. The PC vendor's drivers are the preferred drivers. Drivers from other sources may or may not work correctly.

However, since up upgraded, Windows may have installed the generic basic function HD Audio Codec drivers, either alone or in addition to the VIA audio drivers. If this is the case, the HD Audio Codec drivers could be conflicting and cause problems. Go to the Device Manager and Display what Audio Devices are listed. The VIA should be listed and if you have HDMI audio that will be listed. If the HD Audio Codec is listed, Right click on the entry and then Left click "Uninstall". Restart the PC and check for headphone operation.

My sx-907c bluetooth headphones have terrific sound quality and work with my iPod touch and my Android tablet and they pair successfully with my computer and show up in the playable devices. But the problem is they don't actually play any sound. Even though I select it as the default playback device and the sound settings indicate that there is indeed playback coming to the headphones I dont hear any sound on the otherside. This only happens with my laptop which runs Windows 8.1 pro with media center. My Desktop which runs windows 7 home premium 64 bit pairs up successfully and the playback is perfect. Is there a driver you could recommend to me specifically for these headphones to make it where windows 8 actually plays the audio on this device.

A:Bluetooth Stereo Headphones pair but dont play

There is no drivers for sx-907c bluetooth headphones.

Hello everyone, I have a very, annoying problem. Sound does not want to play through my headphones. at all. I can listen to music through my headphones fine on ubuntu (dual-boot) so it is not the audio card, the headphones or the jack.

I have tried re-installing the audio driver multiple times, as well as messing around with the settings in the sound controls, but nothing works. I have used both the dell.com audio drivers as well as the windows update audio drivers and they don't make a difference.

Any help is appreciated, as this is becoming very annoying

A:Sound does not want to play through headphones

With a Dell, the Dell sound drivers must be used. Non-Dell drivers will either not work or not work correctly.

Reinstall the listed chipset drivers and then the Dell sound driver (install the "Dell" sound driver, not the IDT listed as its an older driver - the "Dell" driver is an IDT driver too). Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States]

If this does not fix it, the Dell Laptop audio or general hardware forum would be the best place to post, as there are those there familiar with your Dell.

I used to do a lot of user support on the Dell forums but it was primarily Desktops.

Hi there,

I recently bought a new computer off one of my friends, and everything seems to work well, except for the headphone/mic jacks at the front of the computer. Whenever I put my headphones in, you can hear a little noise coming from them as it's inserted (a bit crackly), but no sound is played after, only through the speakers that are built into my screen. The computer won't even register that there are headphones in, as usually it would say. I downloaded Realtek HD Audio Manager, and that also didn't pick them up. In fact, any time I would put the headphones in, it would tell me that an input has been unplugged, instead of alerting me to the opposite. Realtek also said that I had a mic-in plugged into the front mic jack, but that's not true at all.

Basically; how is this happening? Why won't it pick up the headphones that are being plugged in? I really don't understand this at all.

Just to update: if I put the headphone jack about half-way in, I can hear sound through the headphones, but the computer still doesn't pick it up.

A:Headphones won't play sound

Sounds like a broken jack if it works when partly in. Aside from trying to find parts for the case, the easiest solution would be to plug them into the back of the computer, if that jack is already in use you'd need a stereo splitter cable but you'd also need a way to turn off, or simply disconnect, the other speakers so you don't have output on both.

There is a slim possibility that the cable for the audio is connected incorrectly or loose on the inside of the PC. You should check that first, older cases had individual pins for each wire that connected to the motherboard but newer ones are single blocks that cannot be connected wrong without force or blindness.

I have an HP elitebook 2530p running windows 7 professional 32 bit

Today the speakers just stopped working all together in the middle of a chess match on chess.com while using google chrome. It has done this in the past on that particular site. Alwasy comes back. Today though when I went to go watch a youtube video didnt' work. I restarted my computer sound was fine for about 10 minutes. Since it finally died I have not been able to get any sound of my speakers at all. Headphones work just fine.

I have gone to HP.com and downloaded the latest audio driver which installs something called soundmax. Does nothing. I have also per instructions on a post here gone and downloaded the realtek driver. I have installed that twice since I seen another poster said he needed to install it twice for the .exe version to work over the zip version. I have also gone to HP and downloaded the latest BIOS version. Said I had the latest and didnt need to installed anyways. I have gone into the control panel and made sure my speakers are the default selection. I don;t know what else to do. And now after this latest restart after going into my device manager and right clicking on the SoundMax and choosing uninstall I now have a "red x" over my speaker icon in the tray that has never been there. When I go to the device manager and click on sounds, video & game controllers the only selection I have to choose is High Definition Audio Device. However when I go in... Read more

I was having some issues with my harddrive having a memory leak and it was running out of space. I tried to install a Nvidia driver and everything got screwed up on my computer. I use a sli system with two video cards. I didn't realize at first it was my harddrive, so I switched the cards ports and later managed to get the video driver to install correctly after clearing space on my harddrive. My physical speakers have not worked since.

I can get audio to play perfectly now from my headphones, but my speakers will not play sound no matter how hard I try. I've tried making sure they're enabled, I've tried re-installing the audio driver multiple times. I've tried everything I can think of with my sound settings and I can't figure out what's going on. My physical speakers are a surround sound system. I have 3 ports (black, orange, green used right now) that my speakers use. The computer detects that these are hooked up in the realtek control panel (ports are highlighted while the rest are transparent).

In order to rule out an actual issue with the speakers, I tapped the tips of the plugins for the speakers and it reacted to tapping with sounds from the speakers.

I've cloned the harddrive to a new fixed one with a higher memory capacity since this problem started. I did a test for corruption with command "sfc /scannow" in run and found nothing. The new harddrive hasn't fixed the problem.

Any ideas?

A:Sound will play from headphones but not speakers. (Desktop)

Check the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel. Your "Speakers" (the RealTek) should be set as the Default Audio Playback device. If not, you will not get any speaker sound.

As you installed NVIDIA and whatever with the video, the HDMI may have been set as the default playback device, and in this case the headphones would work but not the speakers.

I have a Prescott 533 MB with a 2.8Ghz processor 2 GB RAM. My computer crashed and I had to reload windows. There is no sound at all except for the beeps that the computer makes, I tried loading the drivers from the MB CD but they still dont work.

If the quicktime application runs well that means the video drivers work so why does VLC, GOM and WMP not work well (The video runs dark with red images for people) and why is there no sound. When I run the drivers in the MB CD, the computer restarts after the drivers are installed but there is still no sound

Hi there

I have an Acer Aspire laptop and bought a little bass speaker that will enhance what I currently have on my laptop.

Only problem however is that when plugging this speaker into the headphone jack my internal speakers don't play anymore.

How can I play through both my internal laptop speaker and through this external speaker at the same time.

Your help would be much appreciated!

A:Play sound through internal speakers and headphones simultaneously

For most systems dual sound is impossible. Actually I'm not sure if that is possible at all on any card at all...I've browsed around the internetz, and this is what everyone seems to say on this subject.
My advice would be if you are using your laptop for home use only, just go buy external speakers as well, as long as you have 2 sound ports. If not you can get a splitterand plug both the bass and speakers in that.
Sorry I couldn't be of much more help!

Hey guys this is an odd issue im having I have seen settings in other operating systems to turn on or off system sounds but have never had the computer play actual audio through the system sound itself.

Anyways im woindering if someone can tell me how to turn this on, some of the computers in my office do this others dont and its really useful for employees watching 5 min training vids, not to have to hook up speakers etc.

any help?

edit: i should have specified these systems are all on win7 and there are all the same model/components. its just that some do and some dont

A:Some dell towers play sound, others dont

It must be the built-in speakers for the monitor that differs. What computer model do you refer as all being the same? It may also be some audio/output settings you might need to check on one that is working to the other that is not.

As the title suggests no sound through the laptop speakers or the headphone out. Last Saturday my laptop prompted me to download 2 important Windows updates. One of the two updates was Internet Explorer 10. After installation and restart everything seemed ok. Then I went on the internet and almost immediately I was getting this popup "Ulead MP3 Codec: About" "Ulead MP3 Codec v1.0.18" and then an OK button as the only option. You could proceed no further unless you clicked OK, but once clicked the web page froze. I believe I was trying to read NY Post online at the time. So I started Googling the problem and see that many others have the same most in association with checking either AOL email or some other web based email program and it was associated with sound. The fix recommended for everyone was either to turn off sounds in email, download Windows 7 Codec pack from MS Updates or to put Ulead.com as a blocked site on IE. I tried the latter two as I do not us web based email, rather I use MS Outlook. ... Read more

Hi! I have an xps420 dell, I have the front sound and microphone jacks and the back ones like normal. Last night my headphones snapped off the metal part at the end inside the front jack and its lodged inside. So I thought NO biggy ill just use the back jacks from now on. Well the problem lies now the computer wont play ANY sound even with the back jacks. Im assumeing thats because maybe its still reading that front jack as something it can output sound through. So my question is how can i DISABLE the front jack and bypass it to the back sound jacks so that i can get sound back. Or maybe if anyone else has any ideas as to why the sounds not working anymore would be nice to. Thank you!

A:My headphones broke inside the jack and now my computer wont play sound

If you can't free the broken jack, you could just pop the side panel off of the tower and physically disconnect the front panel audio wires from the motherboard or soundcard. This should fix the problem if the broken plug is preventing audio output from the rear jacks.

A:My dell inspiron 7559 laptop will not play any audio through headphones or speakers

Check for  any settings in he Bios.  You might be able to turn audio and microphone on or off there.
If the audio is not listed in Device Manager, in some form, the boot may not be picking it up.  The Realtek audio or at least High Definition audio device should show up.  If you have a device which shows as unknown, that might be it but missing a driver.

I got my HPg61-429wm laptop back from the computer shop, I had a problem with my fan. Before that, my headphones worked like normal, so I don't know if taking the computer apart to replace the fan might have messed with the headphone jack somehow or what. My headphones worked for my mp3 player, so I know it's not them. When I plug my headphones in, the sound plays from the speakers instead.

I've tried going to sound in control panel -> sound, setting independent headphones as default with the green circle by it, nothing happened, yet this seems to solve most other people's problems.
I tried using Everest and under PCI/ PnP (no idea what this is) I have two "High Definition Audio Controller [NoDB]" listings. I google that, and someone mentions to download Realtek AC 97, so I do that, install - nothing.

I will try to be as detailed as possible. I am pretty experienced with drivers and sound settings but this problem has me stumped.

I have a Fangbook III made by Cyperpower PC. I am unable to play sound via the on-board speakers for the laptop. I am however able to play sound through the 3.5mm auxiliary jack input. I have speakers set as default device under the playback settings.

This is where is gets strange. Whenever I attempt to delete the Realtek audio driver, whether it is through windows or a 3rd-party driver uninstallation software, Realtek always comes back within a few seconds. Right before it does come back, under playback, it separates speakers and headphones with both having the driver High Definition Audio Device. If I hurry before the Realtek driver comes back the speakers seems to work! But once the Realtek audio speakers comes back, the default speakers and headphones goes away and I continue to have the same problem with the Realtek driver.

I attempted to reformat the computer with windows 10 and erase all drivers but Realtek was already installed. I assume it is required for this specific laptop? Any ideas on how to direct the Reaktek High Definition Audio driver to use the speakers instead of the auxiliary jack?

Thanks for the help and let me know if there is any more information that you guys need.

Used my computer after work to listen to music with headphones in and it sounds rubbish, bearable but rubbish. I have Sennheiser headphones that usually sound fantastic, they still do sound fantastic on my phone listening to the same song on Spotify.

Anyway, tried Spotify and YouTube and the music just sounds rubbish, kind of flat and no bass. Tried using the audio adjustments and it's not really made a difference. It was fine this morning.

The laptop's built in speakers sound as bad as usual, better than the headphones though which isn't right at all.

Really am stumped as to why this has happened.

This is urgent. I'm a freelance musician and require headphones for my work.

Have you tried with and without the microphone adapter? In your sound device manager see if there is a setting you can change when the headphones are plugged in.

Something in settings like this:

Hello All,

I have a very interesting problem on my laptop. I am unable to get any sound through my internal speakers and headphones. I also am unable to set the headphones as my default device, even if I disabled the speakers.
I have tried the troubleshooting for both speakers and headphones, but to no avail. While troubleshooting for speakers, I get no issue found. While troubleshooting for headphones, it asks me to set the default device as audio. I say yes to it but at the end get the error "Not Fixed. Unable to set the default device as headphones."

Here is a very interesting part. If I enable both of them and the internal speakers are set as default (can't change it), now if I do a test on Headphones in the "Playback devices". I am able to hear sound through my laptop speakers!!!!!

Does anyone have any idea what is going on???

Please help...

A:No Sound through Laptop and Headphones. Interesting scenario..

Sound is such a pain to troubleshoot. First thing I suggest is get a screenshot for us to see all your devices. Next try to reset everything to default and work from there. Disable everything you don't need. Also do you have any third-party software that controls sound like SoundMax?

If nothing seems to be working you can try to uninstall/reinstall the sound drivers. Check Device Manager.

Hi Guys,

I just bought an Acer Aspire 5733z-4406 laptop. It has windows 7 and a realtek sound card. The problem is that I am not getting a good sound from my headphones when I connect them to the laptop. I have tried 3 pairs and I face the same issue. I tried changing the settings from realtek control panel but there is no specific option for headphones there. Also in control panel>sound>manage audio devices, there is no option for headphones. I have selected both "show disabled devices" and "show disconnected devices" and still i cannot see any option for headphones. I sent out a mail to acer tech support and they said that I have to control my headphones using the "speakers option" that I see under control panel>sound>manage audio devices. Can it be like that? I thought I should be seeing all the options since it is a windows feature. I have updated all the drivers and all but nothing seems to be working. Please help me out over here!!

Thanks in advance!

Yes, in the Windows 7 Control Panel you will see a "Sound Option". Select headphones and select configure...

I don't see any obvious problems in the device manager and the sound comes through headphones/speakers plugged in externally. Just not hearing anything through the system speakers. I've gone through the forums here and don't see anything similar...most lose all sound. Any help on how to restore is GREATLY appreciated!

A:No sound from laptop speakers. Headphones are fine.

Hardware fault. Either with the audio circuitry or the speakers themselves.

Hi Guys. I've been using my Dell laptop (Inspiron 6400) for more than 3 years and now when as always removed the headphone from the laptop to hear the sound from the speakers (the original speakers of the laptop which are internal) the sound didn't come out again. Now I only can listen to music when I use headphones. Has it ever happened to you? What Can I do?

I have an HP 17" ENVY laptop. Numerous problems with sound since a windows 10 upgrade. Finally got it all working then sound stopped coming out of the headphones. Briefly, it came out of headphones and speakers at the same time, now only speakers. Any ideas on how to fix this?

First you need to verify your headphone is working well or not . If it's working well,Try to replace the headphone. In control panel, you can find an option "Sounds". And you will get an option related to microphone and please test it. Please try to update your driver also. Hope now your issue is solved.

Audio was working fine on my laptop, when suddenly the laptop would not play sound through its internal speakers.  If I plug in headphones the audio is fine.  Running Control Panel/Sound shows "Speakers and Dual Headphones - IDT High Definition Audio CODEC" enabled and set as the default device, as well as "Independent Dual Headphones" (enabled but not default), and "SPDIF (Digital Out via HP Dock)" disabled.  What can be wrong?

Cured the problem by uninstalling the CODEC driver, then restarting Windows which then reinstalled it, and now things are ok again.

I've got no sound through my internal laptop speakers what so ever but
when I plug in headphones or my surround system, there is sound.
There also is a red light burning in the audio input where my headphone goes in.
I think my laptop thinks the headphones are still plugged in?

Anyone any idea how I can fix this?

Hey all, I'm new here, very frustrated, and hoping I can get this solved.

My computer is a HP dv7-2185DX in total stock form.

I have no sound coming from my speakers. I don't know of any specific trigger. A friend ejected my iPod and walked off with it, but that's the only action I can think of done on the computer for a while.

Looking in the IDT Audio panel it says the following:

With no headphones in - it shows that I have a pair plugged in my middle jack.
With headphones on the left (mic) jack - it shows a mic plugged in and nothing else
With headphones in the middle - it shows both headphone jacks as filled (the one on the right shows up as filled too)
With headphones on the right - it shows both headphone jacks as filled (the one on the right shows up as filled too)

EDIT: More symptoms:

Now it shows the wrong front panel in the IDT Audio screen. It shows as 2-jack layout with mic (L) / headphone (R)

When I plug in phones in my PC into the jacks on the front, it shows as follows....

R side headphone - shows in screen as the right jack
Middle headphone - shows in screen as the right jack
L Mic - shows in screen as the left side mic

** When my phones are plugged in the Mic jack sound is produced under both situations. **

I'd appreciate any help I can get. I already tried rolling back the IDT Audio CODEC (one of the few things I can think to do in this situation, hoping it will help.) I'm going to re-update it and see if that helps, but anything beyond, I'm cluele... Read more

I have looked quite a bit for my problem, and perhaps a fix to my problem and I have never been able to find one. I've tried Microsoft fix-its, they do not work.

Basically my problem is at random times, my headset will just stop working and it will switch back to my laptop, as if my headphones are not even plugged in. It happens multiple times a day, seemingly at random (lately its been this way, but I have had it go longer than a day without doing this to me). As I am browsing the internet, as I am turning on a game, when I am away and the computer is just sitting there.

I've tried checking my device manager for differences when it is working and when it is not, I've tried updating all software, I've tried setting default devices. None of it has helped.

The only thing that fixes this is logging off, or restarting the computer. This then returns it to normal.

My laptop is an HP Pavilion dv6 windows 7 home premium x64.
Headphones in question are Razor Carcharias.
