Yoga 720 Search bar disappears and screen blacks out

Q: Yoga 720 Search bar disappears and screen blacks out

My Yoga 720-15IKB is just out of its warranty and I have noticed that when i click or type in the search bar (bottom left corner), the bar turns black as if it just disappears. As a result, I cannot search for applications. Sometimes i will begin to type and the results will appear for a split second before the entire box disappears.I am unsure if this issue could be related to another issue where my screen blacks out and displays random pixelations before it "runs into an issue" then reboots my computer. This has happened several times over the past few weeks and seems to be happening increasingly often.Drivers up to date, system is updated, ran a diagnostics test and no issues appeared. What is wrong and what do I do to fix this?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi.I have a Yoga 700 13ISK, Windows 10 pro.Recently (started around may-june 2018) I've experienced that the screen goes completly black for 2-5 seconds and then returns to normal again. This happens every 5-10 min Problem appears both on exernal monitor and built in screen. Problem does not appear when booting to bios.  What I've tried:Updated drivers (display drivers, power mngt drivers etc.)Updated bios.Done a complete windows re-install. Any ides on how to fix this?I'm guessing this is a power management error either hardware or software. Or perhaps a broken lid-close-sensor. But what do I know? Conveniently enough my warranty expierd in june so I guess I'm on my own here...

I haven't seen any topics that seem to quite replicate the specific problem I have, so here I am.Without warning, the screen of my Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 11e tablet-notebook will turn black. It appears to be an "active" black rather than the screen turning wholly off. The rest of the computer is working normally during these times: audio carries on, keyboard and mouse input function, and nothing else seems to shut down or turn off. Keyboard, mouse, or touchscreen input causes the screen to return to normal briefly, but the only way to make it stop happening for sure is to restart the computer. I don't think it's connected to sleep functions, given that it happens while I'm actively using the computer.I don't know exactly why this happens, but it usually happens after long periods of use. At least once it has happened within an hour or so of being turned on for the first time that day, but I had a great deal of Chrome tabs open and that may have been similarly taxing. While this problem is not exactly disastrous, it is pretty annoying and well outside the acceptable boundaries of computer behavior, especially for a device I have had for only a few months. I would greatly appreciate help in rectifying this problem.

Does anyone know the specifications for the BOE screen that Lenovo is using to replace the original screen that had the backlight diffuser problem? I've heard that the BOE has PWM.  But is it at a high frequency, and not noticeable? And how about the color accuracy of the BOE? Is it as accurate as the original? And also, what about the black levels and contrast? Are they the same as well? And do all the BOE screens have backlight bleed problems?

Good day.
As you mention that you have video problems following a Windows Update push of a new driver, and that the problems are resolved by reinstalling the Lenovo-provided driver, you may wish to consider turning off WU's ability to update hardware drivers. This will necessitate that you manage all hardware drivers yourself, though.
Personally, WU is not allowed to touch hardware drivers on any of my machines.

Overall, I'm really pleased with the OLED display of my X1 Yoga, but I'm having some fairly unpleasant artifacting in areas where there is a gradient that is very dark (nearly black).  At first I only saw this in videos, where it's very noticeable any time much of the screen is dark.  I thought maybe it was poor compression or a bad rendering . . . but it also shows up in some still images where the image fades all the way to black, so I think it's actually something with the display itself, or maybe a color issue.   Have other people seen this?  Is there a known solution?   Thanks!

I am using a usb-c to hdmi adapter to output to a TV but the black levels look washed out. I had no issues with the same TV and a previous laptop that had a dedicated hdmi port. In the intel graphics settings usually there is a "quantization range" setting to change color space between RGB Limited and RGB Full if the intel graphics is driving the hdmi port. However, in this case, there is no hdmi port but instead a usb-c to hdmi adapter, thus the quantization range setting is missing. I've had the same issue before on a previous laptop with usb-c. I've tried installing thel atest drivers, including the non-validated ones from the intel website, but none give me the quantization range setting.

A:Screen Blacks out

1) Immediately after the power 1st comes on, start pressing the "F8" key repeatedly until a black screen with white letters appears. This is the "SafeMode Startup Screen". If you do not see this screen, it means you started pressing the "F8" key too late. Restart the computer and try again.

2) 1st select "Safe Mode" (with no networking or command prompt) and see if it will successfully boot to Safe Mode.

3) While in Safe Mode, navigate to: C:\(right-click)Properties>Tools and schedule a non-extended check disk to run on next reboot.

4) After checkdisk completes, see if the computer will boot normally to desktop.

5) If not, repeat step #1, and this time select "Use Last Known Good Configuation" and see if that works to get you to desktop.

First, I build 2-3 systems for my business each year.  I am decent at troubleshooting systems.  This one is a real pain.  Belongs to a friend, they were told the HD was dead.  I was going to replace the HD, but it started. This has been updated to win 10. What happens is that on most starts the screen comes on for only a second or two, HP start screen appears for a second and goes black. The various windows start screens, the box, login, (no password) then desktop appear for a second and then the sceen goes black. I thought it was a windows issue, so I did a repair and it worked for several starts. But when I turned it off and left for a couple of hours, it went back to the same on-off black screen.  OK, so i'ts the video - put in  a card in express slot, fixed for about three starts then it goes back to the same routine.  The monitor blue light is on, but the screen is black. I can unplug the monitor, wait a second, plug back in and the desktop appears for a second before blacking out.  About every 4'th or 5'th monitor plug in, it will start working. The other odd part is tring to get into the bios. Using F10, if the screen doesn't go black, it displays a message saying it is hibernating and changes could hurt the operating system. One time when it worked, I did go in and turn hiberbation off, but this still shows.

So hello guys, I'm really new here and the main purpose of being here is because of my computer. I am greatly distressed by it. It is a fairly new computer and since the first day I bought it and installed some programs it's been having blacks out daily. So the blackout ONLY happens when I start playing games or anything that has 3D graphics or require the VGA to start working, the screen goes black, light flashes as if there were no signal at all but the computer is still on and I'd have to force shutdown it to turn it off. This only happened when I used the external VGA, because when I used to use the onboard vga, it ran smoothly without any problems. So yeah this has been happening everytime around 2-3 minutes or even as I start a game that requires the vga to process. I have done TONS of stuffs to fix it. Well I tried testing for overheating with several programs and the max would just be around 46 when I starts a game before blacking out. I have contacted the developers and they switched my vga with a new one thinking it malfunctioned, but no, the problems still exists. I dont know what else to do. and PC turns on nornally, goes through the vista screen, and flashes on
desktop until going black permanently. Tried turning off and on, restarting
on normal mode, leaving off and charging for 2 hours, tried several add'l times.
At suggestion of my son, removed battery, returned battery, turned on again

Recently, I upgraded from an Nvidia 6800 to an HIS 4670 (1gb 128bit). After reformatting my hard drive and installing the drivers, I noticed that there were lag spikes every now and then. For example, my mouse cursor would be traveling smoothly and then suddenly hit some lag and go slowly. When I right click, my whole computer would lag: if I had music playing, my music would lag as well. Also, my screen blacked out frequently. At first, the screen would dim down. Then the screen would go black (monitor and computer would still be functioning), and I would be forced to either put it on hibernate and turn it back on, or manually restart my computer. If I were to put my computer on hibernate and turn the computer back on, my screen would still sometimes black out (in the same manner as it did before). Also, Windows would take an oddly long time to load up with the 4670. My computer would be stuck on the "Windows is loading settings" screen for ten minutes (or even longer), before going to the "Welcome" screen (plus another five minutes of waiting). After getting tired of the said problems, I switched back to my old 6800. Everything works fine - no lag spikes, Windows boots up smoothly, no black screen, etc. Unfortunately, playing games lags on the Nvidia 6800 but not the Radeon 4670. Could this have been caused by a CPU bottle-neck (I have a Pentium 4 3.4 Ghz processor), an insufficient PSU, or something else?

A:HIS Radeon 4670 causes lag, screen blacks out

My first reaction is you have either a corrutped device driver or the incorrect version. Check with the AMD Radeon and download/install the latest driver. If that doens't work, check that your system has the required specs to use that video card. It could be it's too high end for your system. If it's OK, then we'll look at other troubleshooting steps.

It starts off fine, the toshiba logo loads up, windows xp loads up, then I sign into my windows xp profile then the whole screen just blacks out and I can only run it in safe mode for longer than 5 minutes, I don't know whats wrong with it, all I know is trojans and other viruses attacked my laptop just yesterday and from these I think the malware has somehow recreated itself upon boot up, every time I reboot its the same problem but I get rid of the viruses in safe mode..

I don't have hijack log on my laptop yet and will try to upload the log up on here as soon as I can as I am posting from my desktop right now, please someone help me out, stayed up till 3 AM yesterday trying to fix this but nothing yet

The original problem was the XP Deluxe Protector virus: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-xp-deluxe-protector#keys

I assume I got rid of it since it hasn't showed up since, but the big problem is the one I stated in bold, at this point its either a virus that comes back after reboot or my laptop crashes because of what the virus did

screenshots from my laptop will come along with hijack info

Upon turning on my desktop computer, and after pressing the power button to boot up, the screen will randomly black out for 1 - 2 seconds and continues even after logging into Windows and continues for about 45 mins with decreasing intensity (it flashes once every couple of seconds upon boot up and slowly decreases to once every minute and so on, until eventually it will stop completely after about 45 mins to 1 hour. No error messages are displayed.

The problem will resurface if I switch off the monitor for some time and switch it back on. When I go AFK until my screen goes to sleep, and I wake the screen back up, the problem will also resurface.

When the problem first occurred, the flashing stopped completely like 5 minutes after boot up, and slowly over the months it stopped after 15, 20, 25 minutes etc. It gradually takes longer to completely stop flashing.

I think i saw somewhere online it might be a wire or power problem? idk. HELP PLEASEE!

This maybe a vista issue or perhaps an nvidia driver issue i`m not sure but I'll post it here as it seems most relevent. Ever since I upgraded to vista I`ve found that sometimes when the UAC kicks in, the screen flashes to black but it doesn`t always recover. It is supposed to just dim the screen and display the requester asking to elevate privilages but often it will just turn the screen off and remain black. The strange thing is that this is clearly not a system hang i.e. I can still use alt-a to allow the requester that is obviously hiding behind the black screen or I can press escape which cancels the UAC and returns control back to me. In both cases the screen comes back on again.

This does not happen every time but it does happen a lot. It also happens occasionally if windows has to revert to the vista basic scheme i.e. when a program does not support aero like FSX. In this case the only way out is to hard reset the machine. Another thing I`ve noticed is that my screen also blanks in a similar way when I try to switch user, leaving me no option but to hard reset. Wierdly, if I press escape during this time the black screen appears to change intensity almost as if I`ve just switched the pc off and the monitor is about to go into standby, although it never does, and I can switch it back on by clicking the mouse button, although the screen remains black. If I attempt to put the computer into standby or sleep or hibernate then a similar thing happens and the computer is... Read more

A couple weeks ago my laptop screen started turning off randomly. It took me a while to figure out that the computer was still running, the screen just shut off. Closing and reopening the lid turns it back on, sometimes for the rest of the time my computer is on, sometimes just for a few seconds. There is apparently no way at all to trigger it, it just happens.

I hooked it up to an external monitor (and set it to duplicate the screen), and the external monitor doesn't shut off when the laptop screen does, so I know it's not a video card issue. I've also run full scans with Malwarebytes and MSE, so I'm sure it's not a virus/malware problem. Also, I was able to make the screen turn back on by changing how to use the dual monitor setup with the other monitor connected. (Changing from "duplicate desktop" to "extend desktop" and vice versa) Which means either my LCD screen or backlight or something is messed up, or else my computer randomly thinks the screen is closing for some reason (since it's just set to turn off the screen when the lid closes, not shut down or anything). And if it thought the screen was being closed, I'm pretty sure it would come back on as soon as I moved the screen a bit, and wouldn't have to completely close and reopen it to correct the issue. For these reasons, I'm fairly certain it's an LCD-related hardware issue, but I really don't know how to be sure.

So I have two questions:
1) can anyone help me confirm/correct my theory about... Read more

I have a somewhat old computer (Dell Inspiron E1405) and I've been having a couple of problems with it lately. It runs very slowly and my screen often blacks out during use, especially during start up. It has been doing this constantly for the past couple of days and the little icon that usually lights up when I have it plugged in isn't lighting up even though the computer says it's plugged in and acknowledges it as such.

Is it fried, or is there something I can do?

A:Screen blacks out, icons don't light up

That doesn't sound good. I fear the motherboard could possibly be going out. But that's a dirty word in tech support especially with laptops so lets stay optimistic. You gotta start with a full diagnostic though. Test your ram, processor, memory, and hard drive. If one of these devices are bad, then replace it end of story. If all tests good then at least you aren't looking at spending a lot of $$ for parts or a new computer. Let us know.

Btw I think Dell is pretty good about including diagnostic utility CDs with their new computers. If you cant find it, I would visit the website and look for it there.

I try to fix my grandma's pc.

The problem is that the monitor blacks out for a few seconds now and then.

I put up a clean install from windows 7 ultimate. So all software problems are solved with this.

The motherboard has been replaced 2 months ago (Asrock FM2A55M-DGS). She uses the onboard video card.

The processor is an AMD A4-5300.

When i was testing and installing the windows updates at home, the problem occured maybe 2x in 4 hours this morning.

When i got to her house putting the computer to use (as i thought it was fixed tho), the screen blacks out again like 1x in about 10 mins, sometimes it happens multiple times in 5 minutes too.

I now think it might be the psu giving just enough/just not enough power to the motherboard, and the first thing that would shut down would sound logically as the monitor to me.

Also when the monitor is black and you are typing something, when the monitor is back, the text you typed is there. So the system itself does constantly have enough power.

Does anyone have ideas to help me out with this?

thanx in advance!

What happens is the screen goes black and I get a "no signal" for a split second then it just goes back to black. When this happens the fan gets loud. The computer doesn't turn off or anything, it just stays loud with a black display.
When it happens, I turn it off and turn it back on and it'll work for a while.

This happened about 3 times

1st time: Looking at steam sales
2nd time: Looking at steam sales (15 min after the 1st time)

then a 3rd time about an hour later after watching some videos (without steam opened because up to this point it only happened with it opened so i didn't open it). this time I had a video opened while I opened a game and it happened instantly as I double clicked the game.

I turned it back on and opened the game to test it, and it didn't happen like it did before.

The temperatures seem to be nowhere near high.
I'm assuming it's a video card problem?

Could it be anything else?

A:Screen blacks out randomly but computer stays on

I would certainly start with the video card. Check to see if it is working properly. You could check for updates for your driver and there is a possibility that it just may need replaced but start there and remember to write back as to what happened.

Within the last month, an issue has arose in opening my Media Center. Very slow to open, takes 2 to 3 minutes to open and begin to select options. Norton pops up a warning that the program is causing very high CPU activity. I use it to record TV mostly. Each enter command may take 30 to 45 seconds to complete. I try to get a show programed in, but if it takes over 2 minutes, screen goes black, and monitor power light flashes as if there were no signal. Have to shut down and restart entire system to get monitor signal.

It will do the same if I start to watch live or a recorded shows.

No other program causes this issue. No other video issues I've come across.

Is there a process where I can re-load the Media Center program only, or will this require a system wipe and re-load. I have the software for re-loading the entire system.

It stays black for 10 seconds or so then opens into Spamihilator and everything works ok as far as I no. But it worries me that it does that. Does anyone else have the same problem or no why it does it? I don't want to keep using it if something is wrong and it could hurt the computer. Anyone heard of this before??

I have had this Elitebook 840 G3 about two weeks.  When I am using the laptop by itself, the screen flickers and goes black.  This occurs randomly and only lasts a few seconds (maybe about once or twice per hour).  When an additional monitor is attached directly to the laptop, either through the HP Displayport or the VGA port, then both screens flicker and the external monitor will actually go black for a few seconds at a time.  When docked in a slim docking station, the same problem occurs with monitors connected through the dock as with those directly connected.   I first upgraded all the drivers using the HP Support Assistant.  Then the flickering still continued and I upgraded the drivers for the Intel HD Graphics 520 directly from Intel.  The system is currently on driver version dated 7/1/2016.  This laptop has an intel i5-6300U processor, 8G RAM, and is on Windows 10 Enterprise with all the latest updates applied. I do not think this is a hardware issue, because:1) There are 2 others that work with me that also just received new 840 G3 notebooks that are having exactly the same problem2) It happens when using the laptop alone, when using the laptop with monitors directly connected, and when using the laptop monitors connected through a slim dock3) When the flickering occurs and the external monitors go black, the open windows on the screen do not move back to the laptop screen unless you unplug t... Was having error "GPU kernel stopped working, successful recovery" As per recommendation I carried upgrade of Nvidia drivers on my Geforce 560TI. (W7 64 bit)
NVIDIA wizard interrogated selected right driver and I downloaded 331.65

Did a clean install ... it started - then screen went Black ... PC running, just nothing on screen, not crashing - restarted in safe mode and installed again, had successful upgrade message.

PC boots up and key items seem to be working .... but several apps (incl Geoforce's own) as soon as I click to run screen goes back ... again no crash just nothing output to monitor.

Other upgrades I wanted to apply (ASUS MB chipset etc) I can't as, soon as I start the .exe the screen goes black, so I can't see options to select, etc.
Carried out a driver clean with 'cleansweep' then a normal install of driver package again.
Installed OK (better than last time) ... and asked to reboot -
1st reboot ... BIOS, then windows splash, then Black screen

Rebooted again - this time got to logon OK ... then as soon as I tried to delete upgrade folder off my desktop ... Black screen

Rebooted again - in safe mode, after completion - shut down, and reboot normally - this time up & OK .... but concerned something still not right. Dev Mngr does say 3165 is the driver ver.

Although browser and email working ....- install puts shortcut on desktop to its "Geforce experience" ... click on that ... screen goes Black .... as bef... Read more

This is whats happening. I turn on my computer and it asks me wether I should start window normaly in safe mode or ect. I choose start normaly. Windows starts loading and then the screen displays a cursor, and then blacks out before It asks me wich account to log on to and ect. I do this several times and it does the same thing. When I run on safe mode and try for a system restore(to some time 2 weeks ago) the comp spews out this error message about one of my drives and does not let me do the restore.

Can anyone tell me what is happening?
Or just tips and Ideas about how to solve it?
Is this the Conflicker?
Would backing Up all my files on an external hardrive on safe mode prevent the same problem from happening after I run a FULL system restore?

Give me some steps I need to take if you know Any.
Any help at all would be appreciated

Thanks Guys,

A:Screen Blacks out the moment windows loads up. I need the help.

What is the exact error message? "This error message" is not very helpful, and may be the key to solving your problem.

I have never had this issue occur to me before with owning my computer for about a year and half now. I had my computer on for a few days without shutting it off and one night I decided to turn it off to install new windows updates. When I went to turn it on the next morning it loaded up to the Windows 7 logo then after that a black screen with my mouse cursor appeared. I thought maybe it had to take some time to install the new updates but i came back an hour later and noticed the black screen was still there. So I held my power button down to manually reset it and tried to boot up Windows 7 in Safe Mode. I tried this numerous times and received the same problem with the black screen.
I also have tried the other two options of Safe Mode I have looked on these forums and tried a few methods with using my Windows 7 Installation Cd for the System Recovery Options. I ran the Startup Repair to find out that it "could not detect a problem". I viewed the Diagnosis and repair details and this is what i have:

Hi Dell,
My Dell XPS 13 9343 is giving me a lot of trouble. I am currently running Windows 10 on this machine. Whenever I turn this laptop on I get a black screen and then I somehow enter my password and after 20 secs it comes on. Sometime when I am working the screen randomly goes black and then I push escape key and some other keys and it comes on. In addition, sometimes when I am working screen just randomly flickers and then blacks out.
Can you please help me with this issue?

A:Dell XPS 13 (9343) screen blacks out and flickers

Hi Jass,
If i am not mistaken, i think thats the self panel refresh function for Dell XPS laptops. I have the same issue when I first bought my laptop Dell XPS 13 9350. But here is what I did to fix that.
-Go to Intel HD Graphics Control Panel. Once opened, go to "Power". There you will see "Panel Self-Refresh" and disable that option. Then close it and restart your pc. It should be ok. Screen flickering should not be coming in/out now.
Hope that helps,

I have a Compaq Presario CQ50 laptop and it has a tendency to black out when I play streamed shows in full screen mode. I have to do an emergency shutdown and reboot it in order to get it working again. It happens on sites like Hulu.com, or anyplace using Adobe Flash Player, and only in full screen mode. I updated the latest version of the flash player but it still continues to black out. How else can I fix this?

Thank you.
