Display setting for VMWare RHEL4 with Windows XP as host in Dell 1555

Q: Display setting for VMWare RHEL4 with Windows XP as host in Dell 1555

Hi all,
I am running RHEL4 as Guest OS in Dell studio 1555 laptop using VMWare Work Station with Windows XP SP3 as host OS in my Dell Studio 1555 model. But I am not able to set the display properly in RHEL4 which can perfectly fit to the laptop screen so that I can get rid of the troublesome job of scrolling to view the full page. I have at present chosen These options.
Monitor Type: LCD panel 1600 X 1200
Video Card: VESA driver (generic)
Resolution: 1600 X 1200
Color Depth: Millions of Colors

I tried various other options. But nothing else seems to be suitable. Do I have to install some dedicated driver to get the resolution option of 1600 X 900 which is the Display resolution of my Host OS (Windows XP). Dell Studio Laptops use ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 Display Adapters for 1555 model.

Can you please suggest me which option should I choose in RHEl 4 to get the 1600 X 900 resolution option and get rid of this problem?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have installed VMware Workstation 6.5.3 on my WinXP System.
I have put RedHat Enterprise Linux 4 on that as Virtual machine. RHEL is working fine on that. But I don't know how to transfer the files from the Virtual machine to the host machine without using another computer on the network or pen drive.
At present I am using a pen drive or using scp to transfer files to another machine to transfer. But I want to know about the method of file sharing between the host and virtual OS without any other device/Comp.

Waiting for replies...

A:Solved: Exchange dfiles between Virtual(RHEL4) and host machines(XP) VMware Workstati

Not that familiar with VMWare, but from Chapter 5 in the User Guide, if you install the VMWare tools:

Lets you drag and drop files between host operating systems and Windows, Linux,
Solaris, and FreeBSD guest operating systems

Chapter 8, titled Transferring Files and Text
Between the Host and Guest might also be useful.

You can transfer files directly over the network if you are not using NAT for the network connection type.

I don't need help, I just wanted to post my solution.
I recently setup the latest version of Vmware player on Ubuntu 13.04 and found myself unable to download the tools for it. error try again later or something along those lines. I searched about online for answers but google only presented 1 relevant topic and it didn't have a solution. Anyways I've discovered how to get around this, it's quite obvious really, I feel dumb for taking so long to figure it out. Lauch VMware player as root, then the tools will download successfully. Hopefully this will save someone a world of heart-ache.

Hi there
Workstation Version 10.2 Host running these distros - same observations for both hosts. Opensuse / Linux Mint 17 both 64 bit. Guest is windows 8.1 update 1.

I seem on the df -h command get a /tmp file around 4GB which is 95% allocated. This goes down to 0% when the vm is powered off.

I can't seem to find any way to increase the size of this file or configure it in any way -- is this just VMware using disk space or will my Guest eventually fail because lack of disk space. There's actually plenty of space on the HDD itself. !!

I want to return my Dell Studio 1555 back to windows 7 from windows 10. I did not make back up DVD's of my original Windows 7 and now can't access the Dell Factory Restore function (F8, ctr F11). I do see the Recovery E drive, therefore assuming it is still installed and functional. I guess is installing windows 10 removes the ability to boot into the recovery partition and restore my dell. Is there anyway to restore the recovery function of my Dell Studio 1555 so I can restore back to original windows 7. Thanks for any information on this topic.

A:Returning my Dell Studio 1555 back to windows 7!

What's the exact "service tag" number and/or "express service code" number on that Dell Studio 1555 laptop?
That laptop has driver support only for Windows XP and Vista and 7.
It was not tested for Windows 10 and provides no drivers for it.

If you live in the U.S.A., the factory restore/system recovery disc kit for it should be available here.

Hi All,

On a rock solid machine (to date) I got a BSOD. During this time I was using Unity (VMWare Pro), and the host crashed (not the client VM).

I did try the tool at http://www.osronline.com/, which seems to claim that the culprit was steam.exe, but I'm not sure that makes sense.

Any help would be appreciated.

The reason that you are getting the warning is PROBABLY due to the fact that the shut down caused Hard Drive Damage. If it is not too serious we will be able to save your stuff and get you up and running again. If so you should make a hard drive test and an chhkdsk. We will show you how. First get your stuff. Well, yesterday I was mindlessly updating my itunes, just the normal moving/remaining song etc., when my laptop shut off unexpectedly. This has happened before over the last two years due to over heating and it was very very hot at the time. Now when it's witched back on I receive this message:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.

So...There's been no changes to my system in months-it's been working amazingly, and I never received any kind of disk with the laptop when I bought it-not sure where to get those then. I'm not overly up on the idea of paying for something I was supposed to be given when I paid for the laptop, so alternatives would be appreciated!
I've tried quite a few methods already, f8 which doesn't give me a repair option, other f keys which seem to just lead back to the same screen, even had a go at creating a vista recovery disk which hasn't seemed to work, unless I'm doing it wrong!

So, yeah, any help would be appreciated, I can't seem to find answers anywhere!

I may have a solution. You will lose your stuff, however. If you have stuff to save post and I will tell you how. If you just want the computer fixed, give this a try:
Ctrl + F11 or F8 - Access Dell computers Dell System Restore (DSR) partition on many different models.
If it works, you are restored to the way the computer was the day that you purchased it. You have to reinstall your programs, updates, SPs etc.

So yesterday I was busily doing some work and watching something on ITV Player when shock crashed along with Microsoft Office 2007. From nowhere it started continuously beeping at me. It was rather high pitched and didn't sound as though it were coming from the speakers. I flipped it over and had a listen and it sounded as though it were coming from inside. I switched it off and back on again but the beeping simply started up again. Continuously beeping for maybe two minutes of so, frozen on the Dell start up logo, unable to enter either boot menu. However after about five mins, i received the message:

Operating system not found

i tried inserting my windows 7 disk to do a clean install but no drivers were found. I shut it down and unscrewed the back, turned it on and had a listen. It sounded as though the hard drive was beeping, but i didn't think it even had a speaker, so Im assuming whatever is beeping is because of the hard drive. I took it out and reported the.laptop, same results as before but without any beeping at all and a much faster boot time. So my question is...what is wrong and what can i do about.it? Thanks for all the help, this laptop is only 3 years old and really i don't want to be getting a new one soon. Thank you.

That beep is coming from a 'diagnostic beeper" on the motherboard. Dell has beep codes that will help isolate what the failure was.

If you can post what the beep code is, for example 7 beeps or three beeps and then four beeps, etc maybe we can help. Or post the beep code on the Dell Community users forum, Laptop section. Laptop - Dell Community

I have an issue with my beloved Dell.

Last week I started to experience some slowness when starting the machine, but, since it then worked fine, I just didn't pay much attention to it (MY FAULT!)

But, last Friday it won't start at all (well, no, after 15 mins or so, it'll eventually starts, but then nothing works fine).

I did a system check (using built in Dell Diagnostic tools) and found that there seems to be an issue with the HDD.

I bought an external HDD and backed up all my music, docs, confs and so on.

When it finished, I used Sys Rescue CD (http://sysresccd.org/) to check the partition on the HDD, but everything, but all I get was that everything seems to be fine.

So -and since the slot in DVD+RW drive that the PC has works really bad with non-original (music) CDs/DVDs-, I bought an external (USB) Asus DVD+RW Slim drive (335€) and, yesterday, tried to boot from there using the Recovery Disc I've made when buying the PC (I had to make 3 of them, one of Windows 7 and two for Dell Recovery Tools, since they charged me almost 50€ to get those from Dell), but it won't correctly initiate.

I got the windows background (the one you have when you're asked for your password, if you don't change it), the mouse moves and all, but, it won't go any further. It stays there for ever -the DVDs not spinning or anything- or, at least for 30 minutes.

Does anyone knows what may be happening?

I mean, is it because I'm booting from USB Drive?

Thank you all!

Hi there

Windows 10 build 9879 with the latest updates running as a VM on Windows 8.1 host using VMware workstation 11 or vmplayer 7 won't attach USB devices - only USB devices connected at power on seem to be recognised.

I upgraded a W8.1 system to W10 but I'll try later with a brand new install --- I don't expect any change though.

I've also tried both WITH and WITHOUT the 3D / hardware acceleration checkbox enabled --no difference.

Windows 8.1 runs fine as a VM on W7 host if you are coming from W7. Same problem though if you run W10 from a W7 host.

A:Windows 10 on Windows 8.1 Host and Vmware - USB problem

Don't you think a VMware forum would be more appropriate? It is a problem with their software.

A hypervisor normally tries to grab your device when it is introduced (from Windows host in your case, OSX in mine) and then offer it to the guest (10 in both cases). USB2 works for me but not USB3. In my case I use virtualbox and it doesn't support USB3. I know this because I asked the developers. This is a problem with the VM software (one end or the other) not Windows. Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 installed on real hardware all recognise USB 2 and 3. And USB 1 works on Windows XP for all I know if such devices still exist.

Hardware acceleration has nothing to do with connecting USB devices BTW. It is for graphics and normally (ime) makes things worse.

The BIOS/UEFI  settings for Video - Primary Display - are not working.
My machine, shipped by Dell (not from a reseller) few days ago is equipped with the following components:CPU: Xeon E3-1245v6 with Intel HD 630 graphicsGPU: Nvidia Quadro P2000
The BIOS/UEFI firmware allows setting the Primary Display, in case more than one GPU is available. Within the "Video" section, "Primary Display" subsection the following options are available:- Auto- Intel HD Graphics- NVIDIA HD Graphics
Setting the primary graphics to Intel does not have any effect. Nvidia is still being used for graphics output during the boot process.
Am I correct when assuming a BIOS/UEFI fault here?
Edit: To clarify - Intel HD works properly once the Nvidia card is being removed from the system. I've been also replacing the Nvidia card with a much older (PCIe 2.0) AMD Radeon card. Same result here - only the AMD card is being used, in spite of Intel HD being selected as the primary display.

Hi all,
I am running into a trouble while using the VMWare workstation. I am trying to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 on Windows XP-SP3 using VMWare Work Station. After I choose the iso file for the RHEL-4 cd's iso, it takes me to easy install and just asks me the total hard disk space I want to dedicate to the Virtual Machine. But I need more space to be allocated to my "/" partition rather than /home partition. But every time I allocate more and more sace to the total virtual machine so that I can install more programs to my VM, I don't get any benefit, as most of that gets allocated to /home partition. How can I stop this and allocate the sizes I want to give "/" and "/home" according to my preferences? I am using the latest VMWare 7.
Hoping for some positive solutions,

Hi all,
My Dell 1555 does not boot.  I tried to release the static to no avail.  When the power button is pressed, the fan comes on and the keyboard lights up, but nothing further.  The screen stays off and no other sounds (beeps or otherwise) come from the laptop.  I plugged an external monitor into the left side of the laptop and powered it on, and still no display.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Remove the battery - if it'll start up then, the battery is faulty.  If it still won't complete POST, make sure nothing is connected by USB and check the USB ports for bent pins (they can cause a short and a no-POST).  If nothing turns up, replace the mainboard.

I have a Dell Studio 1555 Laptop. It has been more than 5 years old, yet it worked excellently till last week. Now the laptop has got switched off, and it never gets switched on. I have done some experiments and following are the results.
1. Observation: When laptop switch is pressed ON, I can see the side LED light getting on, hard disk starts to spin, DVD drive tries to rotate, but after that both hard disk and CD drive stops. But LED keeps being ON. No boot screen in all the cases. FAN doesnot rotate.
2. Experiment 1: I tried to remove the residual capacitance in the mother board and try to start-up. But same observation as point 1..
3. Experiment 2: I have opened up the laptop, seen that there was so much dust on the FAN outlet and all. Cleaned up everything. Added new Heat sink paste. Re-run the system. But when I try to switch on same observation as point 1
4. Experiment 3: I tried to start the Laptop now, without keeping any of the RAM modules. It is normally seen, if we switch ON laptop without RAM, it will continously BEEP. But in this laptop, there was no BEEP sound. Also switch on LED light getting on, hard disk starts to spin, DVD drive tries to rotate in this case also.
Please help me to resolve this issue.

Having a very weird issue with my Dell Studio 1555.

Started a couple of nights ago at first programs were stuttering and loading extremely slowly, after a restart suddenly all programs would hang and the computer would barely respond. Could not do a CTRL-ALT-DEL or access start menu. This would happen repeatedly after power downs.

The next morning I reinstalled Windows 7 and everything appeared to be fine. The computer operated perfectly fine all day long, however when I came to boot it up again this morning the same issue has occurred.

I haven't installed anything that could possibly be malicious, the only software I installed was Diablo III, Firefox, Skype, Audio and Video Card Drivers and Flash Player.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be causing this and how to fix it?

I have a Dell Studio 1555 that is 4 years old (so no warranty left). Recently it has had problems starting up whenever it went off. I would try draining the static power by holding down the power button with all power sources out of it, and eventually it would work. However, a few days ago it went off and will not start at all when i tried these methods. The adaptor is good, I also tried another adaptor. The battery is good (all 5 lights come on when i do the battery test on the back of it). It is something internal as it wont light up or click on, no fans, etc. Does anyone know what this could be, or what else I can try. I am not sure how to reset the laptop on the back. I just dont want something like that to cause file deletion either though. Thanks!

I'm back...
So yesterday I decided to reboot my laptop (it ususally stays on in and 'sleeps') - no particular reason, and no issues prior to rebooting.
The laptop would not re-boot.  The Dell logo would come up and it would stop loading at about 2/3 of the way.
I tried several times.
No beeps, no errors.  I was unable to boot using F8 or use F2 or F12 to enter other options.
I tried removing the battery, holding down the power button for 30 seconds, rebooting with battery only, rebooting with power cord only (battery removed), rebooting holding down the Fn key.  Nothing worked.
So... I took the back of the computer, and pulled out the hard drive, the 2 memory modules and the CMOS battery.  I re-installed each and made sure all were seated properly.
Then I tried re-booting again.... I got two beeps and only a black screen - it never even made it to the Dell logo.  So then I tried a series of pulling one memory card at a time and trying it in one slot, then the other slot, and then both cards in the opposite slot - each time I would receive a two beep error or a 4 beep error.
I also popped the CMOS battery a second time, and now I have loosened the solder joint for that = (
I purchased the laptop in 2009 (so almost 5 years old).
It is currently running Windows XP (or was running it up until yesterday) so the OS needs to be upgraded.
I have already replaced the hard drive once.

Goal: To have host machine (win7) to use wired interface (lan1) ( as default, while vm (winxp) uses wireless interface (wireless1) ( as default. Each interface is a seperate network and seperate isp.

Using Vmware player 3.1.3

I have set the VM to bridged mode, and bridged that virtual adapter to the wireless interface with vmnetcfg. VM is now able to get out on the internet, ipchicken shows its going out on the wireless isp.

On the host machine, I am also going out on the wireless interface.
I changed metric on wired (lan1) to 1 for gateway AND interface
changed metric on wireless (wireless1) to 100 for interface (no gateway option)

Now, the host machine goes out on the lan1 gateway, great!
Also changed adapter priority, set lan1 above wireless1

Now, when going back to the VM, it is not able to get out on the internet.

If I remove metric for gateway on lan1, I will default back to wireless on the host, Even with the
priority showing lan1 before wireless1..

I guess what im asking windows to do is route all traffic from host through lan1, and route all traffic from vm through wireless1, concurrently.

I have read about this being a problem with Bios and have tried the CMD-->"cd desktop"--> "1555_A16.exe/ forceit" that is spoken about in forums to no avail.

Wondering if there is a problem with the battery as I bought a new charger and that hasn't changed the situation either.

If you need further info to help me out, please message me back.

Thanks in advance,

So a few weeks ago I was running on Vista and everything crashed completely. After a lot of thinking about it, I decided it was time to change over to Windows 7 Home Premium. But a few days after a clean and easy install, my laptop switched itself off completely, I think because my fans aren't particularly on form atm. Switching it back on I received this message:

Broadcom UNDI PXE - 2.1 v11.0.9
Copyright (C) 2000 - 2008 Broadcom Corporation
Copyright (C) 1997 - 2000 Intel Corporation
All rights reserved.
PXE - E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE - M0F: Exiting Broadcom PXE ROM.
Operating System not found.

So I decided to see if I could reload Windows 7 with the disk, but after confirming my details and accepting the agreement I received an error message saying:

No drivers were found! Please browse to locate a driver!

With no options of making a new one and no evidence of my C or E drive, I got fed up I took the disk out and gave it another switch on (in hope) and voila! It worked again! Only to switch off and take me back to square one, receiving the same errors as before.
Though now, when I try to boot from the CD, I reach the loading stage of Windows 7 I occasionally also receive a blue screen which informs me of a fatal error and forces me to restart the entire thing again.

The laptop itself is about 3 years old and hasn't had many problems (other than the overheating) until now. I'm not fussed about saving work/pictures/etc, I have them all on ... Read more

A:Dell Studio 1555 Missing Drivers

I would suggest you to first restore the system BIOS to factory defaults and after that try running Hardware Diagnostics on your computer. In order to run Dell Diagnostics from Hard Drive, follow the below mentioned steps:Restart your computer.
When the DELL? logo appears, tap <F12> immediately.
In the boot device list, highlight Boot to Utility Partition and press <Enter>.
Under Dell Diagnostics Main Menu (see Dell Diagnostics Main Menu), select the extended test. If you get any error code, make a note of the error code.
If Dell Diagnostics passes, then again try reinstalling Windows 7 and please make sure to check that there are no scratches on the OS disc.

Dell Studio 1555 Laptop (X640SHUTS DOWN. OS = Windows 7 Pro. This happens at random within a few minutes to several hours after boot. The problem started to occur about mid September, 2015.
Windows updates have been done.  In MSConfig, all drivers have been updated.  Heat does NOT appear to .be   a problem.  The shutdown is not common to any software or operation.  Upon rebooting, a Windows message appears indication that Windows has not been properly shut down.  I choose "Start Windows Normally" and the computer boots okay, then ultimately again shuts down - not sleep - but like the power was completely turned off.  The battery is fully charged and does not appear to be a factor.  This occurs whether or not the power cord is plugged into the computer.  I attempted Dell Diagnostics, it is not effective.  DD installs the System Detect but does not proceed beyond that point - even after several hours.  Eventually another complete shutdown happens.
I have run deep scans (Norton Security Suite) without finding any malware or viruses. I have also run Norton Power Eraser without it detecting anything. NSS load upon boot and checks every site and email.
I would appreciate any input toward resolution of this shutdown problem.

A:Dell Studio 1555 Laptop SHUTS DOWN

Boot the system and run it in safe mode for a while.  If it doesn't shut down there, it's likely a driver problem.
If it does shut down while in safe mode, it's a hardware problem - most likely with a faulty system board.

A:Formatted my Dell Studio 1555 a while ago and it KEEPS FREEZING up!

So why did you format the drive and reinstall? What was the original problem?

Did you do a complete wipe of the drive the the diskpart Clean Command?

I have created a monitor profile for my laptop using spyder2pro. It eliminates the blue cast of the screen and is consistently neutral from black to white. You can download it from here and load it to the VGA card either through windows' own color applet or with LUT Manager (google it).
The profile is only applicable to the AUO panels.

A:DELL Studio 1555 Monitor Profile

I've installed your profile but it changed nothing:(. I loaded it via Control Panel-Colors-change profile. Maybe you kindly explain how to load it to the VGA card? I really need it, because this blue cast in my dell 1555 really makes me crazy
p.s. i have vista

A:Help can I upgrade a Dell Studio 1555 processor?

You can upgrade the CPU but it's not going to be as simple as doing it in a desktop PC or upgrading RAM. You've got to take the laptop apart in a lot of cases and possibly remove the motherboard. fan should come with it if you get the retail version.

I have a Dell Studio 1555 laptop with Windows 7 operating system and just recently the built in microphone stopped working on Skype. I purchased an external microphone to see if that would work, and no sound can be picked up. So it sounds like a software issue, but I can't be sure. I went to the Dell website and updated the IDT audio drivers, but there has been no change. Can you help me?

A:Dell Studio 1555 Microphone not working

Hi steve80,

Does it work in other applications? Voicerecorder for instance?
If it does, you might need to select a proper Output device in the Skype settings, to make sure it's working.

I just had my laptop repaired (faulty motherboard, took several repairs to finally make it work), and now it has been running for about a week - no problems whatsoever, until today - two BSODs. First one did not produce any dump file, but the second one did. I'm attaching it.

OS is Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. BlueScreenView says this BSOD is related to ntoskrln.exe. I believe I had this kind of BSOD like 2 years ago, it turned out to be something with faulty Ethernet card drivers. I think so (don't remember exactly). Since then, there was no BSOD whatsoever.

I'm not sure if this is somehow related to the new motherboard, or just a coincidence?

I'm attaching dump file. If any additional info is needed, please tell.

A:[SOLVED] BSOD on Dell Studio 1555

Another one just happened - with a different message. Took 4 tries to restart computer (it just stuck every time on splash screen, worked only when I ran it on battery, and plugged in later)

Attaching dump.

Please help, I feel my laptop might not load next time, I have to figure out what is causing this.

P.S. Another BSOD. in safe mode. may crash any moment. please help, this is urgent.

P.P.S. And another one. Removed battery, now running only on AC power. Seems to work... For now. Please help

Hi, I have a problem with my Dell studio 1555 that I cannot find a answer for. So I had to take my computer apart and replace the Fan connected to the motherboard because my old fan stopped working. I put the computer back together again and all I get is a blank Grey Screen. The Back-light is working. I get no picture even when start up and you usually get the Dell Sign. I can connect to a external Monitor and I get picture on that monitor perfectly. So I figure theirs no on board video chip-set problem. I took it to a computer specialist and he told me that the cable might be bad connecting the lcd to the motherboard. So I bought a new cord and it still gives me the same problem.

Other Notes
Computer Specialist said that replacing the inverter board might do the trick. But the inverter board is just for the backlight right? Would that do anything?
When I was trying to fix the problem myself I actually got the screen to work and come up, however my computer was not put back together right, so I had to disconnect and reconnect and haven't gotten it to work ever since.
I am sure that all cords are plugged in firmly.
A week before I replaced the fan I had to buy a new back cover and frame for my LCD because a hinge was broken and monitor started to come undone. But after replacement my LCD was working fine.
Also upgraded to Windows 7 64bit recently but worked after upgrade.
What could it be!!
Please help!
