WD Mybook Essential Basic Troubleshooting Question

Q: WD Mybook Essential Basic Troubleshooting Question

Preferred Solution: WD Mybook Essential Basic Troubleshooting Question

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Re: 1) "Safely Remove Hardware" assures you that nothing is being written to the drive and it is safe to remove the drive without losing or corrupting data. It does not power off the drive however.
The drive is powered through the USB cable. If you unplug the USB cable after getting the "Safe To Remove" message then the drive will power down.

RE: 2) I never install the software on these external drives. There is no need of it as far as I can tell. Windows can do everything you need. Keep in mind that "I never install this software", so if there is anything of benefit in there, I would not know.
If there is a Disk Imaging program, or a Hard Drive Diagnostics program on the drive I might safe those program installer files in a folder somewhere so I could install them later if necessary.

RE:3) Yes. Provided the "Safe To Remove" message has been displayed.

RE: 4) This I do not know. My external drives do not have power buttons.
This behavior could be by design (to prevent accidental disconnection, or something else.) Does it delay if the "Safe to Remove" has been displayed?

Not sure about dotnetframework35. I sounds similar to Microsoft program installer package " .NET Framework 3.5 " , which should be on your computer already through Windows Update.
I think you could safely delete that folder without any consequence.

I have a 1TB HDD that I've been using for a few years now. It has a ton of pictures and files that I need!

Today, when I connected it to the computer, it doesn't show up in Windows Explorer at all.

In Disk Management, it shows as "Disk 1, Unknown, Not Initialized."
In Devices & Printers, it shows up as "My Book," and when I right-click and select Troubleshoot, it returns the message "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem."
I originally had Smart Ware installed with the device, and used it to backup many times. In Smart Ware, it showed the device as "No Writeable Partition Found."

I downloaded the Data Lifeguard Diagnostic Tool from WD website, and after running the Quick and Extended tests, the results were shown as "PASS."

I also downloaded EASUS & Mini Tool Partition Wizard, but the WD drive was not listed in their programs, so I could not attempt any recovery.

When plugged in, the light in the front is blinking, but I can't really hear or feel any vibration / spinning. What can I do to recover my files? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

A:WD MyBook Essential HDD not showing up in Win Explorer

Hello jem555!

I'm sorry to hear about this problem!

How long did both WD DLG tests take? It is important. Also, what happened the last time the drive was successfully used, something that may explain the situation and the problem?

You say you've used WD SmartWare from the Essential, did you back up to it or from it?

It seems for some reason the device has lost its partition table/file system, so despite it having data on it, it needs to be initialized in order for the PC to see it and access it. But by initializing the data will be erased.

You could try the drive with another cable on a different system and try again with data recovery software or partition recovery software. Still, the best option would be professional data recovery, WD has partners in the field.

A while back my external USB harddisk (Western Digital MyBook Essential, 1TB, NTFS) had a problem. Whenever I tried to write any files that would take more than a few seconds (at least 50 MB), it start copying, then freeze, along with the whole system.

The only way to continue would be to unplug & re-plug the MyBook. When I do so I'd get a small yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in the notification tray which doesn't say anything when I hover over it, & it would disappear when I click on it. Even after reconnecting it though, it remains unwriteable.

I did a WDDiagnostics scan that time & though it said there was no problem, when it was done, the MyBook started acting normally for a few months. Now it's started acting up again. No amounts of WDDiagnostics scans are fixing it. I've tried defragmenting it & am now doing a surface test using Partition Table Doctor, but I doubt anything will come out of it.

Reading from the MyBook is no problem, I can play music, movies, & copy files from it without any trouble. It's just writing to it that fails. Please help.

I just bought a WD Mybook Essentials 3tb USB 3.0 external hard drive and ran Windows 7 backup to create a system image. It failed and I get the error message: "one of the backup files could not be created . (0x8078002A).
I have tried formatting the WD as a MBR at 1TB and 2TB and get the same error. I talked with WD support and they said they don't support multiple partitions and to initialize it as GPT, and try it again. I did that with the same results.

Has anyone got the disk imaging to work with this external hard drive?

A:Create system image does not work with WD Mybook Essential USB 3.0

There may be something special about the 3TB My Book essentials.
The MBR is the first 512 bytes of the disk and it serves a number of functions. When it's a data disk it's the partition table which is of most importance.
The MBR partition table which is restricted to 2TB per partition. It's something historical.

GPT may overcome the MBR issue if you need 1 big partition. But I can't see why you can't partition in say 3x1TB partitions. I'm not sure why WD are telling you they don't support multiple partitions.

What puzzles me is you have tried formating the HDD as a 1TB (presumably 2TB unallocated) and it doesn't take an MBR and an image.

I have a 1TB WD essentials with 4 partitions (MBR) and it's full of images.

Hi all,
so the title explains it all
what really happened was..
I dropped the external (drive was not spinning) and plugged it into computer,
it would sit at 100% usage, but 0% on Read/Write Speed

I attempted formatted via Windows Explorer, CMD, Hirens boot CD
I managed to remove the Volume to unallocated, but now cannot Formate or Create a new Volume,
i did manage to update the firmware, so i still have some hope that it can be fixed!!!
but i am out of ideas and seek help from anyone!!

Thankyou in advanced

Also, the Western Digital Quick formatter for Windows fails to format the drive (it picks it up, but after viewing progress via Disk Management, it makes it to removing the volume but then fails and reverts back to RAW

Alright, I'm putting this up here because I've noticed almost everyone here posting troubleshooting issues here with little to no amplifing information. In order to correctly diagnose a problem every scrap of information reguarding it needs to be known, after all you wouldn't feel comfortable with a doctor diagnosing you with a brain tumor after looking at your toes would you?
Don't know where to find it or what will help folks narrow down what could be the problem?

Take note of what the error boxes say when they popup, they are important!

1st and best trick to troubleshooting ANY computer.
Turn your computer all the way off, and leave it that way for at least 30 seconds, this will allow the RAM to lose whatever it was holding and give you a chance to take a break. This honestly fixes more problems I've herd of than anything short of a sledgehammer. :hit:

2nd thing to do.
What did you change last before this problem started? Was it something you downloaded? Something you installed? New Hardware? Anything?
Uninstall whatever it is and see if that fixes it, if so you've nailed the problem.

3rd thing to do.
Check device manager for anything that has a '!' on the icon, be sure to click on "view" and "show hidden devices" to see everything that could be going wrong.
If you see one, double click on it and see what Micro$oft has to say about it through their help and support section.

Go to Start-Run-type in MSCONFIG-click OK-click on Startup tab. The only programs I have running at startup are my antivirus and firewall. Uncheck everything else in your startup tabb, then when you find that you've unchecked something you really need at startup, go back and recheck it. All those programs will start when you go to play them, you don't need them running all the time in the background.

I came upon this problem while trying to upload photos to Photobucket using IE 10.  Once upon a time, before Photobucket redid their site, and my IE upgraded to IE 10, I had no problems uploading photos.  But now when trying to upload to Photobucket, all I get is a photo placard with the "wait" icon in the middle, and nothing uploads.
I have since learned that running IE 10 without add-ons enabled allows me to upload to Photobucket but not to another site I use.  So I've been trying to disable the add-ons one at a time to see if I can determine which is the killer add-on and either disable it or remove it.  I have run across an YrJie New Games add-on which I cannot disable because the enable/disable buttons are grayed.  I learned where this add-on resides but am unsure if removing it from that location will actually remove this as an add-on.  Looking at the properties of this icon it says IeAdsBlocker.dll, and it resides in the Program Files folder all by its lonesome.  I'd like to know if removing this icon would remove YrJie New Games in the add-ons window or exactly how it should be removed.
And because I'm not a techno savvy person in this area, how can I determine which, if any, add-ons really need loaded?  What is needed for any site I visit?  Just visiting sites using IE poses no problems, unless I'm uploading photos.  As I said above, disable one thing and it affects another site.... You can test your memory with Memtest86. Download the .iso and burn a bootable CD.

You might want to check your temps in the BIOS, it could be also be an overheating problem.

I was trying to troubleshoot this for my dad over the phone, but his is the only wireless network I have ever put in and worked with, so it's kind of hard to do remotely.

Here's the background. He has a desktop with a wired connection to the Netgear wireless router that is hooked up to his cable modem. He has a wireless PCMCIA card in his laptop, which is running Win98. There is another laptop in the house with built in 802.11b.

Here's the problem. He can't access the internet with his laptop using the wireless card. The laptop with integrated 802.11b can access it fine. The desktop can access it fine. He says he hasn't made any changes recently. I had him hook the laptop up to the router with a wired connection instead of the wireless. He could access the internet. He said the light on the wireless card is blinking but when it was working fine, it would not blink. Hardware manager says the device is working properly. Rebooted multiple times. So I think, maybe the card has gone bad. He decided to run to CompUSA and get a new card to test it out. He puts the new one in and same problem.

Does anyone have any advice as to what might be wrong or something else to try? My experience with wireless is limited. Certainly something couldn't be causing interference with the signal from one laptop and not the other, could it?

Any help?

I've gone through the steps listed in the link above but I dont think I've been able to get rid of the virus entirely. Here are two reasons why:
I'm still seeing it appear on the programs list. When I click uninstall, I'm prompted in a foreign language and I am at a loss of what to do.
It seems to have caused multiple instances of Google Chrome to be running in Task Manager even though I only have one window with only a couple of tabs open in the Google Chrome browser.

I have a troubleshooting question for my old 2010 Dell Inspiron 1750 if anyone could help.
Granted the computer is old and its never really used. I would like to restore the disk to factory default with all the apps and goodies that came on it from the store.
The PC is slower than a snail making its way across my driveway. :)
The laptop never came with a CD-Rom with the Vista OS on it. It did however come with a recovery partition on the drive.
Inside the recovery partition is a folder named Dell. inside Dell is a folder named factory.wim. Its approx. 8Gb in size and I think has my factory image on it.
Im having trouble importing the image using the imagex.exe tool supplied in the Recover> Tools folder. The version number of the Imagex file  is 6.0.6000.16386. is this the correct version? I'm pretty sure this is a x86 machine and
not a 64bit machine. I could be wrong. Would this matter for the imagex tool?
Some troubleshooting steps ive already attempted..

I've transferred the Recovery Files from the Recovery partition to my external hard drive.
Using CMD, I selected my Disk and "Cleaned" the entire drive.Ive created two partitions, 1) a 100mb partition marked as primary and active, and label of system. 2) taking up the remaining disk space, primary, and label of Windows with assigned letter of G. Both formatted with NTFS and used quick formats.I am able to access the recovery partition on my external drive.I at... My machine has been experiencing intermittent BSODing over the last few weeks and I wonder if you could give me a hand troubleshooting it? I'll summarise what i've done so far. It's not given me anything today, as I say, it's intermittent.

System Info:
Processor Name: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz
Processor Information: Intel64 Family 6 Model 60 Stepping 3
Graphics Information: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti
Mobo: Z87I-PRO
System BIOS: 0903
Installed System Memory: 16 GB
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (originally installed on system)
Age of system: 1 year, 1 month
OS Reinstalls: None
This is a desktop PC
System Manufacturer: Purchased from ChillBlast
Troubleshooting so far:
* Checked EventViewer for after the crashes. The only useful thing showing is that the Kernel service is shutting down - which I suppose it would if power to it was interrupted.
* Opened up case to check components. Everything seated well. Extremely tidy cabling (if I may say so myself; nothing getting in any fan's way).
* Ran GPU stress test - all fine.
* Ran Processor stress test - all fine
* Ran driver verifier (ran for about 20 minutes) and nothing crashed.

Attached Files:
* PerfmonReport
* Your app collection dump
* IPDT Processor Test results

Appreciate your support :)

I recently purchased a new laptop running Windows 7.  On setup, I was pleased to find that it connected to my home network without much complaint.  However, I soon noticed a misstep -- after putting my laptop to sleep, upon waking, it
would consistently fail to connect to network.
I've tried disabling IP Helper, as well as the wireless adapter's IPv6 protocola
la advice on other forums.  I've also ensured that the driver settings do not allow for disabling to save power.  Seeing that none of these worked, I decided uninstall and delete the driver and install a newer version (in a related issue,
the driver update feature failed to detect the existence of a newer version -- why?).
This appears to have fixed the connection issue.  However, still, after sleeping the laptop and waking, although it connects to the router, I still need to reset the IP command-line via ipconfig /release + /renew.
I was running Vista on my previous machine, and I know that its Network Diagnostic tool would, when presenting solutions, frequently suggest that my computer had the wrong IP and that I should reset it.  I was hoping throughout this process
that the Network Diagnostic troubleshooter would present a similar option.  Instead, however, no matter what I do with my wireless, the troubleshooter only ever returns the message "Troubleshooter couldn't identify any problems."  Whether or not

A:Troubleshooting the Network Troubleshooting Utility / After-Sleep Connection Problems

To avoid confusion Let us focus on the first issue within this thread first.
Can you access internet when connecting the laptop directly via cable?
Where did you download the newer version of network card driver? Usually, the “driver update” feature from device manager will go to Microsoft update catalog website for the corresponding driver instead of the manufacture’s website. AT
this point, I would suggest install the latest driver
here. Please note: Microsoft don't write drivers, for any driver related issue, the OEM is always the best resource to turn to. Your understanding is appreciated.
As a workaround, you can prevent the network card from sleeping by the following method:
Open Device manager->expand Network adapter-> right click on the wireless adapter->Properties->under Power Management tab, uncheck the box before “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”.
Is anything unclear, please feel free to post back.

ok i uped thee fsb on my athlon xp 2400 from 133 to 140 at 1.65V times 15. when i try to get 144x15, my comp crashes. i asked my friend this but he doesnt know cause he doesnt use AMD cpu's, but when do i lower the multiplier and up the vcore. i mean, how will i know when to do these?

A:basic question about oc'ing

Ah man be careful! You cant fry your cpu by lowering, uping, chaning, the multiplier or FSB on your cpu in the BIOS, but you can and easily fry your cpu by making the vcore too high. the vcore is the voltage going do the cpu. You'll notice its real fine, as the selection only ranges from like 1.6 to 1.8.

CPUs all vary, some can overclock more than others, some less then others. Yours (cpu) is crashing when you make it too high because it cannot handle the speed, it may just be the cpu not liking it, or your cooling may be insufficient.

The fsb speed in your bios shows up as 133MHz and up/lower. Well you have DDR RAM, which is double data rate, and so PC2700 ram, which runs at 333MHz, shows up as 166 in the bios. Notice 166x2 = 266mhz, since its double data rate/DDR ram.

To get the speed of the cpu, its FSB (times)/x/* Multiplier.

133(fsb)*12.5(multiplier) gives you 1662.50MHz

You can make your cpu go faster, by raising the multiplier, raising fsb, or both.

Lets say your stock fsb is 266MHz, and your ram is PC2100. That means your ram runs at 266MHz stock. The ram operates at the same speed as the front side bus. When you raise the fsb to 270mhz (from 133 to 135 in the bios), your overclocking the cpu, and the RAM! so your cpu may be able to take the overclock, and the temps may be fine, but because of your ram, it may not be able to take the overclock, and thats making the system unstable/crash.

So what some people do to get around that, is they ke... Read more

Hello and welcome to TSF.

As stated in our NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help page, we do not condone the use of p2p file sharing programs like eMule.

Best way to protect your computer is to stay away from them. This practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Please read this sticky:

It's complicated, and difficult to figure out. There's too many variables, and many XP versions have no documentation that I can find. This subject is currently my primary interest: How to reinstall XP on a computer that was either shipped without a reinstall disk, or the disk has become damaged or lost, without having to pay an exorbitant price for the disk.

First, you need to know what was installed. XP Pro or Home, what service pack level and what OEM (Dell, HP, etc...) or custom-built (retail, OEM, upgrade) etc....

You also need to know your Product ID, and have it written somewhere safe, because that is the only thing you have that is of value. When you lose that, you've lost your legal copy of XP and you'll have to purchase another.

That product ID will only work with certain XP disks. Which disk(s) is the primary issue. There is some interchageability, but there's not comprehensive documentation that I can find; some kind of "roadmap" that you can look at and say "I have this kind of XP, and so I need that kind of XP disk."

Finding a disk that will work with your PID is the goal.

I am pretty computer illiterate. Please tell me if what I am trying to do is possible, and how to go about it.

I went for a medical test today (MRI), and asked for a copy of the scans to send to my brother, who is an MD. They gave me the scans on a CD-R. WHen I put it in my computer, I can open the file on my D drive and see the scans. \\

Is it possible to send this info via email somehow, by copying or attaching the file to an email? Or do I have to mail him the CD itself?

Thank you for clarifying this!

A:help...basic question, I think

Sure, you most likely be able to select whatever files you want off the disk and email them. Are you sure you are going to be able to know which files are the images you want to send?

Also, depending upon the type of file and if the viewing software is exclusive to the vendor that made the disk, the image may not be viewable without the viewing software on the CD as well. We don't have enough info here to tell you anything specific.

But you asked if it was possible. Yes, it is.

I found myself with some free time today so I decided I might aswell start learning C++. Needless to say i got stuck at the first error i encountered.

#include <iostream.h>
int main()
int x = 5;
int y = 7;
1 cout "\n";
cout << x + y << " " << x * y;
2 cout "\n";
return 0;
While trying to compile the above code in ms visual c++ i got 2 errors saying that i should have a semi colon in points 1 and 2. Why is this and is it correct? I took the code straight from the tutorial.

error C2143: syntax error : missing ';' before 'string' <----thats the exact error.

A:Very basic c++ question

You're missing an operator.

#include <iostream.h>
int main()
int x = 5;
int y = 7;
cout << "\n";
cout << x + y << " " << x * y;
cout << "\n";
return 0;
but why code extra lines when this

#include <iostream.h>
int main()
int x = 5;
int y = 7;
cout << "\n" << x + y << " " << x * y << "\n";
return 0;
does the same thing?

A:a basic question

I'll choose the Newsgroups one

Okay, first off, do you have a paid newsserver that came with your ISP or not. If you do, then can guide you in the setting up. If not, its easy anyway

For the free one:

Go here http://freenews.maxbaud.net/ and type in anything in the Search Box at the bottom. eg virus or whatever you want. Next it will come up with a list of newsservers. Click on one of them and your Outlook Express will open. It will say you are not Subscribed to any groups. Do you want to download.
you do, so go for it. If you get a NNTP box popup saying error, then this server has timed out or has too many connections.
If this happens, just rightclick the server in the left and choose Remove Account.

However, you may find one that works and downloads groups. make sure that when you were in the above site, you checked to see if you can post or not. If you cannot and you want to, you can go here http://groups.google.com/groups?group=*&hl=en

For the above link, copy/paste into your Search bar as the *&hl=en gets missed off
and search for your group and post. You will have to join (free)

Now, to keep it running okay, you need to ensure that the timeout is set to 5 mins.

rightclick the server on the left and choose Properties. Advanced tab and move the slider bar to 5mins. Apply

Also, Tools | Options. Read. Under News, it has how many headers to get. Put that to 1000.

If you have any problems let me know.

As to the pics, have you moving onto onto ... Read more

Technology is not my gift in life, so I have a really simple question:

at home, I have an older desktop that is connected to DSL. I just got a new Lenovo notebook and want to be able to use it with a wireless network. Do I also HAVE TO buy a card for the desktop? I want the DSL access on both computers, but don't need wireless on the desktop. Am pretty sure it is too old to have a card, and don't want to have to buy one if there is a way to avoid it. Have not bought the router yet...
Thank you very much.

Hi. Not sure how I should ask this, but please let me know what you need to know other than what I say below, thanks!

I have a Fujitsu Lifebook that they issue us from school that we can take home. At school, I can connect fine. However, when I'm at home it's a bit different. Once I'm connected at home, I'll open up Firefox and the loading icon just sits there forever, and all of the sudden, whatever I'm trying to load will come up quickly, as fast as it does on the desktop computer we have that connects wirelessly fine.

This period of regular-speed internet will only last for around 5 seconds or so, everything loads fine in that time. Right after though, it resumes doing nothing and things will pretty much not load at all until that 5 second period decides to come back. It's really useless and I hope you can help me find a solution.

If you need any specs or anything, please post and let me know. Thanks in advance.

My pc was continually shutting down so I did a reinstall of win 7 home basic 64bit. Prior to this I bought a seagate ext hard drive and borrowed a wd external hard drive. I backed up my c drive to both using the seagate acronis and the wd smartware software.
Using the seagate drive I recovered the files to a new g drive partition on my hard © drive and this shows a volume of 200+gb yet when I click on this drive the folders are only showing a few thousand kb of information and I cannot access any of my original files.
What am I not understanding please?

A:Basic question

When you say you can't access any of your original files what is the error message that you are getting?
Is it possible you have hidden files? Enable viewing of hidden files?
When it says a volume of 200+ GB this could mean the total capacity of the partition and not your files. If you right click on the partition and click properties it will show you the used space versus the free and total space.

Howdy, I'm new to the forums and am not sure if this is the proper topic to post this in. I've been having some trouble with an email account that is associated with a particular game I frequently play. I've regularly scanned after each attempted hack or hijacking attempt and am not sure if my computer has ever been secure since these attempts. This problem has been persistent for nearly a month or so. I've scanned with malwarebytes a few hours ago and it hasn't turned up anything suspicious. I guess my general question is if my computer is possibly infected that previous scans have shown nothing suspicious. Another thing worth noting is that the only email that has been successfully taken over is the one that is linked to that game. I've created more than my fair share of back up email accounts and those have been left alone. I was also curious if I could get some help in determining if I have any programs that are not necessary for my computer to run properly.

I intend to purchase a new PC, my 2nd & although I appreciate I must reload my software, operating system & ISP, I do not know how to transfer the stored info on my hard drives. I am worried that by being a "PC inadequate" I might lose the lot!! Please help.

A:New PC - Basic Question!

One way would be to temporarily load your present hard drive as a secondary on the new machine and transfer things as you want.

The other is to use XP's Files and Settings Transfer Wizard found in the System Tools. It can be used on both the old and new computers.

If there are specific things you want to save, there may be more explicit directions for them.

Also, software like Acronis TrueImage allows you to image your entire hard drive onto CD-RW's and then browse the image for files after the old machine is long gone.

This is a question about Microsoft Visual Basic .NET Standard 2003. My school lets people borrow this program and whenever I try to install it I get an error. The error reads "Error 1402. Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\ACLFile\DefaultIcon. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel." I am the admin of my computer. When I go to this part of the registry the only thing there is called (Default) and the path leads to "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\Office10\MSOICONS.EXE,6". When I go there I see MSOICONS.exe but don't know what the ,6 means in the error.
Sorry for the long explantion but I really want to know how to fix this.

I have a basic understanding of how newsgroups work, but one question I have not been able to confirm...

When you access the newsgroups and read messages or view binaries, is any of the full text of the message or the .jpg viewed, etc. stored on the computer anywhere? Basically, I would like to know if there is a Newsgroup cache that stores actual files (other than which newsgroups I viewed, read/unread message numbers, headers, etc)? When I am done reading newsgroups, are the messages I viewed stored anywhere on my hard drive if I have not manually 'saved' the message/image.

If this question is newsreader dependent, I typically use Free Agent or Xnews to read.

Thanks in advance.

A:Basic Newsgroup Question

Hi ddelmoni

I use Outlook Express to access the newsgroups.

The newsgroup file reflects what is currently on the server, though if I wanted, I could save that file and restore it on another computer or at a later date.
I just have to be careful not to be online so that the server is unable to update the file.

I usually copy/move the newsgroup posts I want to keep to another folder in Outlook Express.

If I unsubscribe to a newsgroup that file is usually eliminated from the directory.

I have not used Free Agent or Xnews, so I do not know how it saves the files.

Are you wanting to access some old newsgroup posts?

New to DSL here AND wireless. Been on dialup since the beginning of internet (- 80's) so I am used to just running a phone jack to wherever I needed a computer. I just went with Bellsouth's DSL. (lying thieves - got their $58 a month service & they charge me $80.. but I digress). They sent me one router which I have hard wired to the ehthernet outlet on my old desktop HP. Now I realize that I need to get a laptop for backup, etc. Assuming that the laptop will come with the 802.11 wireless stuff, would my best bet be to buy a couple of the ethernet tranciever things .... One to plug into the eternet port on the router & another to plug into the ethernet port on the desktop? I live alone, so i'm not really trying to start a LAN for a family. I just want to be able to use the laptop in different areas of my house / still use my old dsktop PC & do it the easiest, cheapest, least likely to give me problems. Thanks.

A:really basic DSL/ethernet question

Not real clear as to what question you are asking!

If you decide to go with a laptop, most come with wireless adapters built in, but not all. To have this work with your existing setup, you will need to have a wireless router. You didn't state if the router you received from Bellsouth was wireless or not.

This would allow for roaming capabilities in your home provided you don't try to stray too far from the router.
