Backup doesn't allow individual files to be b'd up?

Q: Backup doesn't allow individual files to be b'd up?

I have played around with the backup functionality; I know how to backup a system image. What I cannot figure out is how to backup individual files; when I configure the backup and drilling down into the folders, the individual files are not shown.

In XP, I backup my Outlook .pst every day (I work from home so this is important). I had a NTBACKUP job set that would backup only the .pst file every day...no problem to set up.

When trying to configure W7 backup I can drill down to C:\Users\Mike\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook but the only thing that's shown in the Outlook checkbox window is "Accounts."

The .pst is not in Accounts, it's in the root of the Outlook folder.

How can I configure the backup utility to be more granular? Thanks for the help.

Preferred Solution: Backup doesn't allow individual files to be b'd up?

I recommend downloading and running Outlook PST Repair. It's a PST repair tool that I've used it in the past to recover emails, contacts, tasks and notes from corrupt Outlook files that are damaged or inaccessible. Supports Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/1bjhSi. (This link will automatically start a download of Outlook PST Repair that you can save to your computer.)

You certainly can with commercial products like Acronis, but I don't know about the Windows product. I would guess you can--if you can't, that would be a major shortcoming.

I'm on the hunt for a piece of software, or a function within Windows 7, that will allow me to:

1. Schedule a backup of just a single folder
2. Automatically overwrite (or ignore unchanged files) at the destination

Aaaaaand . . . . that's it. I poked around with a couple of different applications, but I wasn't able to select a directory as a source, only a disk drive. Anyone know what I should do?

I've seen posts on other forums discussing this issue, but the resolutions are not really directly on point...or they are so extreme they are unreasonable..unless you have lost a file that just cannot be replaced. Here goes.

Since running VISTA Ultimate I have encountered the issue where VISTA gets stuck at the WELCOME screen after entering login credentials. After having to rebuild several times because of this, I decided to get an external USB drive and back the machine up using the tool "Vista Complete PC Backup/Restore". I backed the machine up weekly. Several times the "welcome" issue appeared and I was able to restore the box back to the most current backup...without incident.

Yesterday the sticky WELCOME happened again, so I attached my USB drive and went into PC REPAIR and started the process to restore the entire PC from a backup.

I get the message Vista "Complete PC Restore" doesn't recognize backup files or something similar (no locations) and the option to enter a location manually is not available.

I rebuilt the machine using the HP recovery disks and it is now running in its base configuration, without any of my additional software or configuration.

I can see the USB drive, and I can see the directory where the backup files are held. (I named the PC to the exact name when I rebuilt it), but I still get the same message when trying to rebuild.

Any help is appreciated.

TKS.

I'm stuck with a script again and would appreciate it if anyone can help point me in the right direction. I have a long rolling log which I want to split up into individual files. Where can I get specific individual .dll files? How difficult is it to update a .dll file?

I have been downloading and running various .dll repair programs that claim to fix everything. Unfortunately, none of these programs have fixed or replaced the .dll files my System File Checker lists as corrupted and not reprojectable.

I am looking fo these specific files used by Windows Defender in Windows 7:

MpEvMsg.dll.mui
MsMpRes.dll.mui
MpAsDesc.dll.mui

I have never manually installed a .dll file, but I learn quickly and know how to follow directions. Can someone point me to a "how-to" instruction list for replacing corrupted .dll files? Is it a relatively simple task once I have good .dll files? I would rather not have to pay $200 to someone like the Best Buy Geek Squad just to make what hopefully are minor system changes. Any advice is appreciated.

A:Where can I get specific individual .dll files?

You can extract them from the win 7 install media,

Extract Files from Windows 7 Installation DVD

If you don't have one you can download one here,

I just used 7-Zip and found those files in the install.wim, you have to grab the right folder once inside but it's all explained in the tutorial.

I have windows 8.1 and using media player to rip them. However, the problem occurs when I insert the second disc and media player starts ripping the cd without changing the names of the tracks. I didn't notice this until I was on the third disc. Now I have multiple versions with the same title and haven't been able to tell them apart other than deleting them.

I'd like to do this with each disc its own titles, etc. I don't want to do this via iTunes, which every online website gives as the way to do this. I also don't want them in one large file. I'd like to find a stopping point now and then. Any help, including ink to different programs that will work, would be helpful.

Is it possible to assign individual files to a library? So far, I have only found a way to put a folder in a library and when I do that the entire file list for that folder appears in the library.

Thank you.

A:Individual Files in Libraries

Libraries are virtual folders not virtual files so to answer your question, no. Instead maybe use a symbolic link (made with mklink with the command line) and link the file in a certain folder. Or just put it in a folder already set to the library.

However, little mischievous people may go into this if I am not on my computer and be a pain. Therefore, I want a way of protecting it from opening up in it's main application.

I don't really need it to be sophisticated, it is not to prevent hackers etc, it is merely to stop people having instant access to it from my desktop.

I doubt there is any built-in feature of windows, therefore what third-party applications can do this?

A:Password protect individual files

just create your own account and keep them in your documents folder. nobody will have access as long as they do not have admin privileges. or keep them on a flash drive. I would strongly urge you not to password protect individual files because you could forget the password and lose access to the files. this forum is full of locked threads because of users wanting help with forgotten passwords when they were trying to protect files.

+backups for my primary hd
+tv shows
+movies
+program installers
+personal movie collection used for editting
I have found that certain files cause windows explorer to crash - be they movies, tv shows, installer files, files on backup, etc. - when highlighted and cause Dr. Watson to go bonkers. There seems to be no connection: files with similar sources, extensions, sizes, use dates, names, pathnames, etc. seem to work fine. In all there are just over 20,000 files, of which maybe 30 cause this problem. It is possible in transfers they were just simply improperly transferred (causing pieces of the file to be lost forever), but there is a file I KNOW that happened to and Dr. Watson never went bonkers and Explorer never crashed when I selected it; it was an .avi of "Beetlejuice" whose transfer was terminated before completion, and all it does when selected is simply not play in WMP. Any ideas?

You can now right click your file, go to 'Properties'. Under the 'shortcut' tab click 'Change Icon'. Browse to your newly created .ico file and select it.

A:CD shows data, but not individual picture files

Welcome to the TSG forum.

Photographers own the rights to print the pictures .. And usually don't give you the readable Images that the camera took.
They probably have proprietary software to read the pictures ..
The discs you can't read are probably what you'd take to get them printed.
The images you can see .. Are low resolution copies that probably won't make good prints ..For previews only.

They don't want you to print them yourself or have anyone else do it ..They want to charge you.
What's the extension (file type) of the data files in the Disc that you can't view ???

An hour later I finally located the entire folder and scanned photos in the recycle bin. It just went there itself.

A:How do I delete individual files created by system protection?

Hello Bhootnat, and welcome to Seven Forums.

A restore point is different than a backup. You will not be able to delete a specific file included in a restore point. Any attempt to mess with a restore point like that would most likely end with the restore point no longer able to be selected to be used when doing a system restore.

Instead, you could only delete specific restore points if you like.

Is there a faster way to password-protect folders than the ones I already know, such as AxCrypt or putting in a zip with 7Zip? I have a lot of huge files and it would take too long.

I do NOT need powerful encryption for these particular files. No hacker is ever going to get them; it's only to keep out my roommates who use my account on my computer. For various reasons setting up separate accounts is not an option.

I"m wondering if there's some way that's not as secure as AxCrypt because that's overkill for me but would still add a password and do it quicker.

A:Faster way to password-protect individual files/folders

I have installed software that can encrypt/ decrypt individual files/ folders or multiple files/ folders. It's pretty easy to use via drag/ drop folders/ files that you want to encrypt (accepts multiples) or select via right click context menu.

Right click a file/ folder to encrypt/ decryptDrag 'n' Drop multiples to encrypt/ decryptEncryted files have .pcr extensionIf you use the main program window to decrypt files or multiple files it totally and permanently removes encryption and restores the default file extension.

If you decrypt via click and open - you are asked for a password to open the file and it remains encrypted when you close the file.

A:Backup files fail to backup files in Program Files

Hi

Backup doesn't usually back up a program's files. Since Programs need to be "Installed", it makes no sense to simply back up the program's "program files" folder if no User data is stored in such folders. Since that folder would be fully rebuilt upon it's reinstallation, why does a backup need to be made of it?
I tested this also, and while a backup file was created, the zip folder was empty as was yours.
But again, backing up such a folder makes no sense and is a waste of space in the backup file, so it only makes sense that certain file types are excluded from being backed up.

Hello all,
I am fairly new to macros and am looking to split a large word document into smaller files based on a text string within the document, and then save those files as individual word documents, or as a bonus, PDF documents. The text string is "HEADER DATA".

Basically, I want the macro to find the text string "HEADER DATA", then select that page and all pages up to but not including the next instance of "HEADER DATA", then cut those pages from the original document, create a new document with the same formatting/ page layout, and save that document with a new file name. I want the process repeated until the end of the document, and each file saved with a new file name.

Some attributes about the file:

The text string "HEADER DATA" is always in the same location on a page, but is not at the top of the page.
The format and layout of the new document must match the current document.

Here is something I came up with (don't laugh too hard, lol). This will extract the first pages as intended, and saves the new file, but then Word stops responding. I don't quite know what the error is. Thank you in advance for any help.

I'm preparing to upgrade from Windows 2000 professional to XP. I would like a perfect backup of my C: drive in case the worst happens and XP kills my computer (so I can revert back to 2000 and my old system without a problem). I have 2 hard drives so I have the room to put an exact image of my C: drive onto the slave drive. Just wanting to get some feedback as to the best way to do this.

So far I just used the "backup now" option in Windows 2000 and saved a .bkf file of my entire drive to the slave. It actually didn't take up that much space--the .bkf must contain some sort of compression.

Anyway, is this the best way to go about protecting myself or would it be worthwhile to instead invest in a 3rd party backup program instead before undertaking this? There are tons of programs out there of course, Norton Ghost, Backup Now, GoBack, or what have you. If Windows' option works well I don't know why people would buy a 3rd party program but I hear about it a lot so I thought I'd ask. Anyone ever restored an entire system from a windows .bkf file before and had difficulty? Protecting myself is pretty important to me.

Any advice would be helpful.

A:Computer backup before upgrade to XP--backup software suggestions,.bkf files,etc?

With the windows backup you have to reinstall windows and then restore the backup to get back to where you were. I use and love ghost because it makes a 100% exact copy of EVERYTHING and all you have to do to get it back is to restore the image and you're up a going again - no need to reinstall windows. Is also fast and can clone one drive to another or create an Image file.

GoBack I don't like and Backup Now needs windows to be installed to restore the backup

G'day everyone

Does anyone know of a simple backup program that is capable of backing up large files incrementally by splitting the file and backing up only changed parts of the file? The files I'm talking about are files that get altered by appending stuff at the end of the file, e.g. log files or mailbox files, so it's generally possible to split a new version of the file at the exact point where the old version stopped, purely by file size.

Specifically, I want to back up Thunderbird and SeaMonkey mailboxes without having to create additional subfolders within those programs.

I understand that if something had changed near the beginning of the file, then the whole file will have to be backed up, unless the backup program is capable of some very clever searching, but mostly the files will change only by having data appended to it.

Thanks
Samuel

A:Backup software that splits large files for incremental backup

You may want to rethink incremental backups. Where I worked, until I retired, we first used incremental backups for our servers. That seemed like a good approach - make an initial full backup on one day of the week and then only incrementals the rest of the week. That allowed smaller backups however when it came time to restore it was a nightmare making sure the incrementals were installed in the proper order, and it took much longer to restore. A decision was made to only do full backups every night and although the backup was bigger if a restore was needed there was no confusion on order of reinstall and it took less time.

I do the same thing with my own PC backups. I use Acronis True Image, which has incremental backup ability, but I only do full hard drive backups, to a separate hard drive.

I have a new HP Pavillion Elite HPE with 920 GB of memory running Windows 7. I am an average computer user. I have a WD external backup drive with 1TB memory. I don't like the backup software that comes with the computer. I can't access anything to see how old the files are. The only option is to restore. Thank God I haven't had to do that. I have the files important to me backed up manually. I tried Nova backup but all I had was a bunch (really- a bunch) of files again that I couldn't access. I had a copy of Norton Ghost that wouldn't work with my old XP computer so I tried it on this one. After days with support manipulating my computer, going through three people to the software engineer, they could not make Ghost work on my (64? whatever) computer.

I don't know if I need a mirror or clone or whatever I've been reading about that I don't understand. I have plenty of room on the backup drive and have CD's and DVD's that will restore, I think. Best Buy made me some when I bought it and the computer made me make some as well when I got home. I can manually do a system backup less my files that doesn't change. So what I really want to do is to find a software that will enable me to choose the files I want to that sometimes change (My Documents) and have those backup on a regular basis. I also want to have those so I can go to my M drive (backup drive) and see my files just like in windows explorer. That way, if anything does happen, I know my files are alright and if I have ... I have Win7 and I had an extra internal drive acting as backup to my system. Well, the system got infected by a virus that I couldn't cure, so I figured that since I had a backup, I could probably just restore files from that. Well, I got Win7 reinstalled and then I went into my backup drive and selected the icon with my old computer's name (disc with green arrow pointing down), right click and select "restore options." Then, I get "do you want to restore files from this backup? So then i click "restore files." Then, a loading bar comes up that says "looking for backup devices" and then goes away, showing nothing but "refresh" and "browse network location..." as options.

Anyway, how can I get my backup files from this image if it can't see it for whatever reason?

thanks for your help.

1. I upgraded from XP to W7 after backing up my whole XP laptop.

2. I want to restore some programs from the XP backup to my W7 laptop.

3. W7 windows explorer sees my external usb disk and the XP backup file I want to
restore from.

4. However, W7 backup utility does not see the external disk or the backup file.

5. Any ideas? Can the W7 backup utility work with a backup file created by XP's
backup utility?

A:Can W7 backup utility read XP backup files?

Hi Ikers;

Windows 7 backup does not recognize XP backups - However, Microsoft does offer a free tool:

Windows NT Backup - Restore Utility

Utility for restoring backups made on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 to computers running Windows Vista and Microsoft? Windows Server? 2008.

Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - Windows NT Backup - Restore Utility

This download requires Validation from Microsoft - If your copy of the OS is less-than-legal, the Validation process could cause you some headaches.

Be sure to follow the instructions on the download page to the letter. And as always, create a system restore point and back up any personal data prior to downloading/installing the utility.

Best of luck to you!

I'm having issues using BUE 11d to backup the exchange server 2003. It will not backup the files priv1.edb and priv1.stm in the 'MDBDATA' folder. Files are selected in the job selection list and have an exchange license installed on BUE. Also modify the registry the other night to 'exclude active files' (something in found while roaming on Symantec forums). Neither changes worked. The files appears to be locked because they are *greyed out in BUE. Though they are check, I can't un-check it like the other flat files.

My computer has been asking me to do backups.. and this is fine and dandy and usually works but lately it's been saying "this CD needs to be formatted".. and when I click "OK", it pops up the same thing again. This isn't a problem with the CD, it's the same CD that I've used for backups every other time.. and it's not a problem with the CD because I've tried new ones numerous times.

The following link is a screencap of the error I receive.

After reinstall (repair install) the backup on my Win 7 Pro doesn't work. For some reason it's not recognizing the external drive. I looked in th KB and found an update, download it and tried to install. It came back that my system doesn't need it.
My event log is already filing up with errors and warnings. I want to do a image backup so I don't have to reinstall all of the updates that came after SP1.
