Ideapad 720S-13ARR screen goes black - overheating?

Q: Ideapad 720S-13ARR screen goes black - overheating?

My notebook has been experiencing a problem where the screen would go black. Keyboard backlighting still works but everything else doesnt't (sound cuts if it happens wile watching a video or listening to audio). When the screen goes black, nothing I do will bring it back unless I power cycle it by holding down the power button. This only started to happen recently after coming back from a trip where the notebook was used for 8+ hours each day for 5 days (not heavy use; office work and video streaming). After some troubleshooting, the black screen happens after I hear the fan spin up indicating that the internals are starting to get hot. Once it sounds like the fan has hit maximum rpm, the screen will go out. This sounds like a hardware defect to me, but before I send it in for warranty, I want to see if there's any suggestions on anything else that I can do. I want to avoid warranty for now since I have a big trip coming up in 2 months. Not sure if I'll have the notebook back before then.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello community, I recently bought an IdeaPad 720S-13ARR and noticed that the hinge is asymmetrical. I do not know if it is on purpose or if I have a defective unit. When the display is folded up, the gap on the left side of the hinge is noticeably larger than the gap on the right side. Also, when it is closed, the part of the hinge that is connected to the display sticks out more on the left.Otherwise it is working really nice.Has anyone else noticed this?Hinge leftHinge rightGreetings, Domi(Sorry if I made mistakes. Tried updating to version 6KCN38WW, but I get an error saying "Your On Board BIOS is for OS Version 15063 only, can't update current new BIOS." My Windows 10 version is 15063, so I don't know why this error is showing up. Also tried running Windows update to 16299, and I still see the same error when trying to update the BIOS. Any solution to this issue?

I found an BIOS update on Lenovo official site, whose version is 6KCN37WW. But I can't update it since the hint is "Your on board BIOS is for OS version 15063 only". A few days later, there's another update saying "for RS3", but the version is the same, 37ww. The change is that there's a notice as follows: If OS version is 16299 or newer, it means that your OS is RS3, and BIOS version should be flashed on 6KCN37WW or newer version. If OS version is 15063 or older version, the BIOS version should be flashed on 6KCN29WW or older version. The question is, my OS version is 16299 and my current BIOS version is 6KCN26WW. So, what shoud I do if I want to update to the 6KCN37WW version? Should I install another Windows 15063 version? And by the way, why is BIOS update related to OS version? Thanks.

I'm currently having trouble with my Display Drivers crashing when watching youtube or videos on facebook. The laptop is about 2 months old and has already been reformatted via system recovery (stock image). All windows and lenovo updates have been installed. There are no new graphics/driver updates from AMD that I can install.  I had the laptop replaced the 2nd day owning it as I though it was a defected motherboard/video card. At this point, I think there is more of a driver issue. Has anyone had an issue like this. Asided from this, I love the laptop. I just got a new Ideapad 720S-13ARR, I bought two Anker adapters:USB 3.0 to EthernetUSB-C to HDMI adapterThe ethernet adapter works just fine. On the contrary, the USB-C to HDMI adapter does not works. I checked the adapter in another Dell laptop, and it works like a charm. But in the Lenovo, it is recognised by Windows as some "USB 2.0 BILLBOARD" device, it kind of gives the impression that Windows knows there is an external display since it lets you pick the projection mode, however it won't be able to read what monitor it is, and it won't display any image at all. I seem to have the latest BIOS and drivers, but I'm curious if I there is a particular Windows driver that I should force on this device as opposed to the default one that is getting (for that billboard thing). I saw other threads in this forum for Yoga noteboooks which were apparently resolved by a BIOS update, but I already have the latest. And I saw other threads in which a very significant amount of users are reporting all sort of problems with Lenovo's Type-C ports and these adapters. Has anyone been successful with this laptop and with any HDMI or VGA adapter? Does anyone knows if the Lenovo branded adapter works fine? Any particular driver I should force this device to use? Cheers! Nestor.

My 720s came with BIOS 6KCN28WW shipped. To stay in touch along the maturing of this still young platform, I upgraded to 6KCN29WW, which is available since last week.I am very pleased, especially about the improved fan regulation.BUT now the touchpad is no longer accessible. The F6/Fn+F6 trick doesn't change anything. And there is also no option connected to input devices in the BIOS setup.Windows doesn't show a mouse cursor at all, until I plug in a USB mouse. Invisible in the device manager, no complaints about missing drivers et al. Same under Linux. I'm puzzled because it has worked with the old BIOS. It is seemingly a firmware issue of the BIOS upgrade, unrelated to drivers. Falling back to keyboard navigation, of course, limits the mobile use of this handsome piece of hardware. So any help appreciated!

Hi, I recently updated my BIOS (720S-13ARR) to version 30WW because I was not able to install version 38WW (same issue like in this post: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-IdeaPad-100-305-500-Edge/IdeaPad-720s-13ARR-if-the-bios-won-t-be...) It installed successfully but now the device crashes every two minutes or so. I cannot find any link to the original BIOS version (29WW). Can someone provide me the link/file? As 38WW is not possible to install and 30WW does not work, this is the only way. Thanks and regards,Clemens

I AM NOT A REPRESENTATIVE OF LENOVO IN ANY CAPACITY, JUST SOMEONE WHO HAS GREATLY TIKERED WITH THIS LAPTOPS HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE Hi everyone, give the issues with the Ideapad 720S 13ARR I'd like to share my experiences with it thus far from operating systems to updates. Seeing as how information for this laptop is disparately spread across the internet, I have decided to gather some of the common issues and fixes here. Note that some fixes will ultimately lead to reduced functionality or performance of your laptop. I will specifically mark these as such. They should only be employed if you are absolutely 100% certain the specific issue is happening to you.  Operating Systems That I have TriedWindows 10 (Officially Supported)Ubuntu 18.04 LTSDebian 9Arch LinuxThe laptop ships with Windows 10 and it is what Lenovo officially supports. However, after the recent interesting updates from Lenovo introduced instability into my system, I wanted to try and see if things would be different under Linux. As you can see I tried the three major Linux distributions excluding Linux Mint (The results would be similar to Ubuntu). Its worth noting that I ran Gnome 3, Cinnamon, and the KDE 5 desktop environments. Current Ryzen support in the Linux kernel is still spotty at best, although things are quickly improving. I would recommend staying away from Linux however, as the AMD video driver (under Ryzen) conflicts with the Linux graphics stack to the point where random lock u... Read more

Hello! My 720S-13ARR was upgraded from 1703 (it came with that OS) over 1709 to 1803 now. I don't know whether this error occures only after the update to 1803, but when the device goes to standby mode (either after some time or manually triggered in the startmenu) it does not resume from this. The power light is on, but the screen remains black.Because I suspected some drivers might be messed up after three upgrades (or might simply not be compatible) I downloadad 1803 64bit and did a clean install. It found all drivers itself, so I did not use the ones provided by Lenovo for 1709. But the problem persists.Bios is 29WW.Any help/suggestions?ThanksMoriarty

I AM NOT A REPRESENTATIVE OF LENOVO IN ANY OFFICIAL OR UNOFFICIAL CAPACITY. This post will show you how to manually upgrade your BIOS to V38 (or any other BIOS released for the 720s-13ARR). This assumes the user has working knowledge of the command line or terminal as well as Linux systems. NOTE: This is not a 100% comprehensive flashing guide. I only show you how to flash using flashrom. All other software is left up to you to figure out. This is a dangerous procedure and should only be used as a last-resort option. If your here, you probably attempted to install V37 or V38 BIOS on a first generation 720s-13ARR. Again, do not install V37 or V38 BIOS on a laptop with V29 or below utilizing Lenovo's installer. The Insyde flashing software will hang when attempting to flash your EC firmware, rendering your laptop into a useless paperweight. The only way this would happen is if (like me) you modified the installer to force flash the update, otherwise the version check should prevent you from doing so. This procedure is intended for the Lenovo 720s-13ARR only, do not attempt this on any other laptop. In addition, this process is only intended for people who have had their warranties expire or have had their warranties denied by Lenovo. If you are not in this category and the latest BIOS updates (V37, V38) have bricked your laptop, then PLEASE send your laptop in under warranty. Lenovo will most likely honor the warranty and replace your motherboard. Requiremen... Read more

Hello, I am posting on behalf of my mom. Similar to some complaints of the Yoga Series her IdeaPad 720s screen is beginning to separate from the panel. Because I seldom ever use her laptop I've not really noticed. While trying to figure out an issue shes been having with some work software (electronic health records), I noticed that the bottom of the panel (in between the rubber seal and hinge area) is slightly exposed and is showing some of the innards of the laptop. She doesn't have the greatest eye sight, so she hasn't noticed. Is anyone else having these issues? Is there a fix or am I going to have to RMA the unit? She's only had the unit for about a month and a half.

Hi, I am writing here because i am concerned by an issue that happened to me today. I came home from school where i was working on my laptop, then once i got home i picked my laptop to work again, but i instantly noticed a big crack on my screen going from the top, near the camera, spreading until it reaches the bottom left of the screen. I decided to call the warranty service from lenovo and explained them the situation, but the customer service representative told me that the warranty doesn't cover physical damage and and that i had to send them the computer so a technician decides whether it is my fault or not... I am very concerned by the situation because i am sure that that crack isn't the result of a bad usage of the product from me, i always take care of it and i have it since almost 2 months.  Considering that, i just wanted to know if something similar happened to other people here and what did the technicians decide ? Thanks for your help

My operating system is Windows Vista Business.

I was watching a youtube video, and my computer overheated and shut off. This doesn't happen very often, as I usually notice it's getting hot, and I keep my computer elevated.

After I went to start back up, I logged back into windows (typed my password) and hit enter. The screen just remained black for several minutes. I rebooted, and tried again in safe mode to see what would happen, and the screen was still black after I logged in.

After a thrid attempt, I finally got back into windows like normal. So everything seems fine now. However, I'm curious what may have caused this; I was pretty alarmed by it, and it hasn't happened before.

Thanks

A:Black Screen after Overheating

The sudden shutdown can cause issues like that on reboot. I wouldn't worry as long as it doesn't occur again.

More important is to keep an eye on your temperatures, possibly even re-apply the thermal paste on the CPU to stop it overheating in future.

Hi everyone! :)

Recently my Satellite m70-164 began to freeze after just a few minutes working. The image on the screen freezes, and some seconds later it goes completely black.
The computer doesn't even have time to become hot, and it doesn't shutdown... It's just the screen that freezes and then goes black. I have to reset the computer by pressing the power button. (I'm writing this from another computer).

I noticed that the working time reduces everytime I reset the computer, and after some time it freezes even if I'm in the BIOS settings, so I don't think it's an OS problem.
Although the computer doesn't have time to become hot, this suggested it might be a heat problem.
So I tried pointing a fan at it's bottom (a large one, like those we use in the summer), and it works without problem!

With the fan pointed at it, I reinstalled Windows - So no Virus.
The laptop fan *doesn't* keep running like it's overheating.
The fan works and it's not clogged as I've cleaned it.

So if anyone has the same problem, or any ideas, please respond!
(And sorry for my English)
Thanks in advance! :D

A:Satellite M70-164 - Screen freezes and goes black, overheating

Hi buddy,

I agree with you. If this happens even in BIOS it has nothing to do with Windows or a Virus. In this case it seems to be a hardware malfunction?

But before you contact an authorized service provider to diagnose what part is causing this, clean your notebook using compressed air spray. This should be done from time to time (every 4 months) and therefore it?s not necessary to disassemble the notebook.

Check this!!!
