Q: Thinkpad X1 Carbon (4th gen): Does not start up af...

After updating Windows 10 to the newest version today,And updating to the newest BIOS version using Lenovo System Updatemy Thinkpad X1 (4th gen) won't startup by opening the lid, like it used to.Lenovo Support says they can't help me. Going into stand-by and waking up by closing and opening the lid works fine. What doesn't work is powering up the Thinkpad (after shutdown) by opening the lid. Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I received my Thinkpad X1 Carbon a week ago and it's been working fine both on battery power and on the AC adapter the entire time. This morning, I closed my laptop like usual (so it goes to sleep but doesn't shut down) and brought it to class with me. When I tried to wake it up though, nothing would work. It won't boot with the AC plugged in either. I'm pretty sure the battery is an integrated battery and I don't want to void my warranty by fiddling with it. Does anyone know what I can do about this problem? It's the only computer I have in college and I'm taking some computer science courses so my problem is pretty urgent. I also can't feasibly bring it to somewhere to repair since I'm in a pretty isolated town and I don't own a car. Also by reading the forums here, I'm under the impression that the Lenovo customer support line is simply terrible. Is that true? Once again, thanks for any possible insight!

A:Thinkpad X1 Carbon does not start up

'afternoon.
Welcome to the community.

Sorry you're having issues.
Have you tried the "reset" hole on the bottom of the laptop? I believe that it's unmarked, but you'd use a paper clip to trip the switch. I don't have an X1C, personally, so I can't describe it further. I'm mobile at the moment, so have limited search capability, but if you search the forum for a post by Mark_Lenovo, I believe there's a picture of it.

Regarding contacting Service, I've personally never had anything but good experiences. Please keep in mind that on open forums like these, the good reports seldom get posted.

I purchased Thinkpad X1 Carbon 20A8 just a month before. I am facing issue that my laptop won't start without AC Power even if i shutdown this for 3 or 4 hours.  Pl. help/guide me how i rectify this issue or have to send to service centre. Thanks

A:Thinkpad X1 Carbon Won't start without AC power

Hi Hafeez,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with no POST without AC adapter on your ThinkPad X1 carbon.

Check with performing the Emergency reset which will be at the bottom of the laptop.
Remove the ac power adapter and insert a straightened paper clip into the emergency-reset hole to reset the computer.

Hope this helps.

Hey Community! We have an issue in our company: We have some above-named Laptops, but one of them doesn't start every week so I have to press the reset-button on the bottom of the device for 10 seconds, after that it starts successfully. In my opinion that isn't a solution for ervery time! The Laptop has warranty so can I get a new one, because it's an internal problem?

I hope someone can help fix this issue I have all the family ready to string me up. The laptop will not start. I've tried most things but to no avail. Thanks in advance. When the power on button is pressed the green light comes on, the keyboard backlights briefly flash, the fan spins up for brief instant, if I listen very closely with the back cover off I can hear the speakers hiss with noise, and (if I have reset the machine) 2 tiny red LEDs on the F1 and F4 keys flash once. The power light remains green but then nothing happens. If I turn it of I get a sharp pop sound from the speaker. When I plug in the AC adapter the power light flashes 3 times. Same results with or without power adapter. This all came about after I had gone against my mantra of 'if it ain't broke - don't "fix" it'. I updated various drivers from the Lenovo site both manually and after selecting an automatic update. I cannot recall every item that I downloaded in the end but they included:Lenovo Power Management Driver (64-bit)ThinkPad Monitor INF File for Windows 10 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPadIntel HD Graphics Driver for Win 10 (64 bit)Intel PRO/1000 LAN Adapter Software (Gigabit Ethernet Driver) for Win 10 (64 bit)Realtek High Definition Audio Driver for Win 10 (64 bit)Solid State Drive Firmware Update Utility for Windows 10 (64-bit) NOT SUREIntel Wireless LAN Driver for Windows 10 (64-bit) NOT SUREIntel Bluetooth Software for Windows 10 (64-bit) NOT SURESynaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver... I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

At the moment the display is mirrored using a VGA cable to connect to the dock. What we would like instead is to connect the dock to 2 external monitors with separate content on each monitor and the laptop display blank. I just can't figure out if this is possible, what might be needed, and how! Greetings, My X1 Carbon Thinkpad will not connect to wi-fi either several times a week, or at worst, several times a day. I can try to get online with the Thinkpad and the tiny orange symbol is lit on the wi-fi icon. Clicking on that, the wi-fi message says, "not connected."  Sitting in the same chair, I pick up my Samsung Note tablet, and it effortlessly connects to my home network. My phone connects and my Kindle connects. Everything connects except the Thinkpad. At this moment, the X1 Carbon Thinkpad is connected, and I am typing on it in this forum. But, in an hour, I could pick it up, and it will not be connected. The "Windows Network Diagnostics" will tell me "Problem found." The explanation will be "Problem with wireless adapter or access point."  Then it will explain: "Not fixed."   Any suggestions?   Best regards,Bill Phillips, Durham, North Carolina

When I returned home I tried charging it, but the charging light would not come on. I tried a couple of suggestions form the forums, including:pressing the reset buttonremoving the main & CMOS battery and pressing the power button multiple timesHowever, it remains completely unresponsive. I've created a service request with Lenovo, but I am fearing the worst: an expensive motherboard replacement. Is there anything else I can try in the meantime?

Hello  I bought a 6th generation thinkpad X1 carbon last sunday from a local computer shop and I would like to know whether its brand new or if it has been used before. I checked the warranty status on the website and it says You have 1143 Days remaining on your warranty, Start Date: 2018-12-29 and an expiration date on 2022-03-28  . Which I found strange because it also says that the product has a three year limited warranty, and 1143 is more than 3 years, so is that normal? plus it says  Origin: Factory Warranty. Any thoughts about this or on how to check if a laptop was used before will be much appreciated,Thanks

A:is my thinkpad x1 carbon brand new?

Good day and welcome to the community.Issues similar to this pop up in the forum, occasionally.
Initially, the warranty start date is set to near the manufacturing date, and a machine will then sit in a retailer or distributer's stock for a bit. If you contact Support in your region and explain the situation, they should be able to adjust the warranty start date (and end date) to match the purchase date. If I understand the process correctly, you'll need to provide them documentation of the purchase (receipt, etc).Regards.

Hi guys, Happy Thinkpad user here so far, but I have an issue with my laptop's camera and I'm not sure if it's a hardware or software issue.A number of weeks ago I got 'USB device not recognized' errors when I started Windows, but ignored them as everything worked fine, or so I thought. Today I noticed that Skype could no longer access my camera and same goes for other programs that can access the webcam like Zoom.us. I opened the Windows device manager and there was an exclamation mark next to USB Composite Device with hardware ID USB\VID_04F2&PID_B5CF. I removed the device and scanned for hardware changes; this time the device came back without an exclamation mark. However, the camera still didn't work.Next, I downloaded and installed this driver: linkAlso didn't help.Did some manual driver updating, device removing, device restarting, etc. No dice. The thing is, I can log in to Windows with the camera and there's also an 'Integrated IR Camera' listed in device manager in the cameras section. There is no camera listed in the 'Imaging Devices' category. I also checked the Windows privacy settings: all apps have permission to access the camera. So my question is if my camera is partially broken or if this is something that can be fixed by software? Thanks in advance for your help. Paul

I'm trying to connect my X1 Carbon (4th Gen) to a monitor using HDMI. I have a Lenovo OnePlus dock, which has DisplayPort and VGA outputs but no HDMI. My monitor has VGA, HDMI, and DVI inputs but no DP. I've tried two DP to HDMI adapters (one passive, one active) but neither will work -- I get neither video nor audio. I've already tried updating the BIOS and the graphics driver. I tested this setup on an X230, which also has a DP output. That didn't work, either. I assumed the monitor's DVI input or the cable were bad -- until I tried setting the X230's BIOS display config to use DP during startup. Suddenly, the output worked -- until the boot sequence ended. Then it stopped. This indicates that the DP output on the X230 works, the HDMI input on the monitor works, and the cable and adapter work. So why can't I see video after the machine boots? I can't try this test on the X1. I was only able to get back into the X230's BIOS by connecting the monitor to an HDMI cable (my Pro Dock has an HDMI output). But the X1 and dock lack HDMI connections, so if I think I'll be unable to get back into the BIOS if I set the boot display to digital. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hi all,  The reason of writing this is to express disagreement with Lenovo ThinkPad battery replacement policy.I?m a ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5th Gen user, and I have been using this device for little more than an year now. Everything has been working ok, however recently (probably 2 months ago) I noticed that my battery dies much more quickly than its used to. I checked the warranty status and ... surprize, surprize the warranty of the battery had expired a month ago (I really hope that is coincident !?!). That obviously didn?t make me happy, but I said, well, nothing last forever, and one year of decent battery life is probably all you could hope for nowadays, even from X1 carbon. So, I decided, I?d pay for another year of decent battery life. I called the support line and asked how much it will cost me to get my battery replaced on site (on site replacement is part of the ThinkPad warranty). The response I got back was kind of unexpected. They explained to me that actually ?the onsite repair service is not applicable in this case as my battery is out of support already?! Now, let me explain how I feel about this.Little more than and year ago I bought a very expensive device, for that money I could have bought two devices with similar spec from another vendor/brand and kept one for spare just in case something goes wrong with the one I?m using. However, I decided to stick to ThinkPad as it was a brand famous for its built quality and more importantly 3 ... Read more

Like many others, my new i7-8550U, 16GB X1 carbon 6th gen is experiencing worse performace in bios 1.25 than in 1.23. I did some testing and with bios 1.25, after a while the power settles at around 13W and doesn't even reach the cpu temperature limit (75-85 deg C) so the clock speed is around 2.3-2.5 Ghz, and I get around 500 on cinebench. After rolling back to bios 1.23, the power turbo boosts PROPERLY to 29W and 22 W, and reaches the temp limits (around 97 deg C) . But actually reaches cpu speeds of 3.0-4.0 Ghz, and I get 650+ on cinebench.I was able to undervolt cpu/cache to -150 mV stable though, after which I get only a little bit cooler (avg 89), but cinebench score is 700+.red(bios 1.25), green(bios 1.23), blue(bios 1.23+ undervolt -150mV) running running 10 loops of cinebench r15 cinebench r15 scores  So please, Lenovo, I don't want to stay at bios 1.23 because of this. Please give us an option if some of us want to run cooler or get more performance. Or is there any other way to fix this in bios 1.25??

Hi guys, I have bought the education edition of the X1 without Windows being preinstalled and now I am not capable of installing Windows 7 Pro 64bit. The only option to install Windows 7 is via USB stick, for which I have created a bootable version with the Windows Tool and with a legitimate Windows iso file. But after starting the installation process, the message pops up that necessary drivers are missing, which I cannot locate on the USB stick and which I have no idea to find in the internet. Neither the Lenovo handbook is useful for this first time installation of Windows. Since I am searching the web now for 3 hours without success I am getting quite frustrated. Does anyone know the solution? Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome,

What is the exact message?  If it's asking for a CD driver that can mean several things.  Usually a bad download or bad media or bad transfer of image to media.

It may be that your USB ports are in USB 3.0 mode and the Windows installer doesn't have drivers for that.  I'm not personally familiar with the X1... if it has a USB 2.0 port, try that.  There may be  a BIOS option to put the ports into 2.0 mode or perhaps "auto" mode that might help.  Another option is to connect via a USB 2.0 hub.

Are you installing in UEFI or legacy mode?  In UEFI mode you'll need to enable CSM support in BIOS - which may be explicit or may be automatic when you select the "not OS optimized" boot mode before loadingt defaults.  (The missing driver message doesn't sound like missing CSM support).

Just a few WAGs,
Z.

Hello there,Been trying to figure this one out for a while and am having no luck.My X1 carbon gen 2, 4600, i7, 256gb SSD, 8GB ram is throwing up memory error errors in the Lenovo diagnostics and windows fails to boot. The laptop is out of warranty now, so my only options are either finding someone who can solder on some new memory modules for me (the BIOS is surprisingly complete there, gives you the module number and everything) or buying a new motherboard, in this case the 00HN769 but they are a minimum $500 for a unit.Anyway basically just want to know if this was a common fault with these boards, whether or not I will be able to source the 00HN769 without a CPU attached to save costs, or whether (hopefully) there was some other fix for this that I could try?Lastly I was wondering if anyone knows where I could source the memory modules, M471B5674-H0-YK0.... I can't find many motherboards (a few refurbished ones on ebay) or much info on the ram and no one else seems to have had this issue.Thoughts?really appreciate any help, am dying without this thing, my Alienware m17xr4 VS X1 is such a change in laptop size...Thanks!

A:Thinkpad X1 Carbon memory failure

FYI on this one, in case anyone else has the same problem in the future...I couldn't come up with a single person who's had this problem besides myself.Cost for the ram alone was about $100 per chip, so $200, and then labour to solder them on was going to cost me about $50-100, so $250-$300 AUD, and no guarantee.  Ended up just buying a new motherboard, with CPU ram etc for $500 off ebay.  Lenovo don't seem to sell these motherboards to general public, best price I could come up with for just the motherboard was around $800 though, new, so second hand is the way to go with these.Hopefully this helps someone in the future.

When will the LTE Sierra Wireless EM7455 module be available for X1 4th gen model configuration?

A:ThinkPad X1 Carbon 4th Gen (2016) - LTE broadband ...

I see that some retailers have Sierra EM7455 cards available now: https://techship.se/products/sierra-wireless-em7455/?gclid=CjwKEAjw55K4BRC53L6x9pyDzl4SJAD_21V1Gouta... I have a 4th Gen. X1 on order at the moment that should be here shortly and is all ready for a card. Can I use this version of the 7455 card in it -or- am I going to run into a BIOS whitelist issue? IE: Does the card have to come from Lenovo?
