I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Do a search elsewhere on this TechSpot forum for information on Dell passwords... you may be out of luck on that model... I would look for the name she called you, or some negative reference... If she intentionally did the password thing, then you will be able to figger it out eventually.

Hi,
Does the INSPIRON 9400 take 2 x 2 GB RAM and which one do you recommend to buy?
I started using Windows7 and want to virtualize some machines and need more RAM. Currently I go 2 x 1 GB from DELL equipped, but there is no upgrade by DELL to 2 x2 GB, only from KINGSTON:
Hope somebody has experience and allready upgraded his machine and can give me the results.

Joey

A:4GB RAM on DELL INSPIRON 9400

Hi Canis,
According to the Owner's Manual for your Inspiron 9400, the maximum supported RAM is 2Gb, which is what you already have. The Intel 945 Chipset doesn't support more than a total of 2Gb, so there is no point to trying to put 2 x 2Gb in to the system. At best the system will only recognise 1Gb from each card, for a total of 2Gb, and at worst the system won't boot up at all. Even if the system did boot up it is likely to give memory errors and be quite unstable, so I would strongly recomend that you don't try it.

The display doesn't fit on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 9400). I use a separate monitor and keyboard. All was well until the left hinge on the laptop broke. A PC expert came round and fixed the hinge by removing the screen etc. Now the display is ok for the monitor but too big for the laptop. It's too wide and the top 1/4 repeats along the bottom. The guy had done something to speed it up but wouldn't say what. He said it was a software problem and the system needed to be completely restored from the discs and left me with the problem. Total restore is not really an option, but I did try to restore to a date before he was here. There were no retore points available. I don't know why. In the end I did try control f11 which has worked before but that now doesn't. I really do not want to restore. I just want to be able to use my laptop without the monitor when I travel.

I have tried change the resolution but that has no effect on the laptop, just on the monitor

A:Display too big Dell Inspiron 9400

First make sure the correct driver for the laptop's graphics adapter is installed by checking Device Manager. If no error symbols are shown there, then everything is probably okay as far as drivers are concerned.

Now go to Control Panel >> Display >> Advanced Settings (I think, but I no longer have Windows XP so not sure).
What you are looking for is the "Display Resolution" adjustment. It may be set at the wrong values. See if you can drag the slider towards the right (higher resolution). Then click 'OK' to save the new setting. You won't actually see the result until after you click 'OK' so you may have to experiment with various resolution settings until you get the image to display proper size on the laptop screen.

If you are unable to change the resolution (slider won't move or it's already at it's highest setting) then you may need to re-install the video driver.
You can download that from the Dell website appropriate for your part of the world.

I just became the owner of a Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop that has had the OS removed. According to Dell support this laptop had been installed with Windows XP Professional 64-bit. I know that Microsoft no longer supports Wins XP, but I would like to use this laptop. A friend at work tried to install Win XP from a disk but my laptop came up with this error # 0x0000007E (0x0000005,0xf76120BF,0xfase208,0xf7ASDF08).
I have been out of work for 4yrs. and really can't afford 150.00 for a new Win. XP Prof. program. What can I do to get my laptop up and running? She is bluetooth and wifi ready and I ran a full diagnostic and she passed in all areas!

Please can someone help me!

The Registry recently became corrupted on my Dell Inspiron 9400 and after several unsuccessful attempts at fixing it I am giving up and installing a new Crucial 120GB SSD and hopefully upgrading the OS to either Win 7 or 8. But this brings up several questions that I'm hoping someone can answer for me.
A) Will this old a laptop run either of these operating systems properly?
B) If so, will it run any version of them - Home, Premium, Pro, Ultimate, etc.
C) Will it run 64 bit or just 32 bit?
D) Can I do a clean install on a new Solid State Drive? And if so, do I need to buy an OS upgrade version or a full version, (I'm assuming there is a difference.) (I think I still have the original Win XP installation discs).

If this project is feasible and I get through all of the above are there any other problems that I am liable to run into?

Thanks for your time and advice.

Hey Everyone,
My friend has a Dell Inspiron 9400 Laptop, and he wants me to format it for him. I tried to use the quick format utility. However, when I start the laptop, the dell splash screen comes up with the options of F12 and F2 for boot options and bios options. However, the normal www.dell.com splash screen where you are supposed to hit CTRL+F11 does not come up, it just comes up with a blank blinking cursor for about 3 seconds and goes to the windows bootup.

I have found a site called the DSRFIX tool that is supposed to repair the repair partition. But I am wondering if I am doing anything wrong. My friend says that he didn't have any kind restore discs with his laptop. So, I am wondering if I need to run this repair utility to get the partition back, or if his laptop does not have the restore partition. He does have the diagnostic utility when you go into boot options, but there is no option for the repair utility.

On my own dell laptop, the www.dell.com splash with the blue ribbon on the top and CTRL+F11 works for my Inspiron 9300. Can someone help me figure out what is going wrong here?

Thanks for any help.

A:Dell Inspiron 9400 Format Troubles

Sounds like you are doing everything correctly. The restore partition may be corrupt. After taking thousands of complaints Dell changed it's mind on not offering restore cd's. Your friend (and you) can call Dell support, give them the necessary info, and they will send a free restore cd in just a few days.

Hi all,

Apologies if this is in the wrong section, can be moved if necessary.

Having trouble getting my brothers laptop to boot from cd, upgrading it from XP to WIN 7. I have changed the BIOS settings to boot from cd and pressed f12 and clicked on boot from cd in that menu, but no joy. A blank screen with _ flashing comes up the disk spins for a second but then it just goes straight to XP.

The CD is fine as I did a fresh reinstall on my own computer a couple of days ago.

If anyone has any ideas what I'm doing wrong or not doing it would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 with Windows XP installed. I have the laptop since April 2007.
Yeasterday I left the laptop in stand-by for about 1 hour, when I got back the screen was black and could not be revived in any mode.
I have switched off the PC by pressing the power button until power went off.

When I try to start the laptop the Dell logo would come on with a weird pattern of green dots in the back ground, then the usual XP logo would come on, still green dot pattern all over the screen and then the screen would go blank.

I have ran all the available system diagnostics for Memory, Harddisk and system componenents at start-up and they all passed. In addition the laptops power sources are working well.

Then I have run the genuine Dell-XP CD Rom and run the 'Repair Installation' option.
This would run normally and even the screen was normal until after the first Boot request. Then rebootet the PC and configuration would go on for about 10 minutes ... then the screen just blanks out again.

Please help ... I need some fresh ideas on what else I could do.

Hi guys,

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400, service pack 3.

Up until Monday, my sound was working fine. Now I simply can't get any sound out of my laptop whatsoever!

I am wondering whether someone has somehow changed settings or volumes I don't know about so if anyone can suggest anywhere to look I'd appreciate it.

I know my soundcard AND speakers are fine. I checked my Device Manager and the device is fine. I also ran a diagnostics check at startup.. as in the F12 key and checked the sound.. I heard a few melodies, clicked the 'yes' I can hear button and the test was complete..

So why, when I turn on my laptop and play a song/video/etc.. can I not hear a single sound?

Obviously, my laptops general settings are not muted.. I have checked.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Everyone,

I'm having some weird problems with my Dell Inspiron laptop. While using my laptop I got a "paged fault in nonpaged area" blue screen and it just died. When it booted back up the screen was covered in weird wavy blue dots. These disappeared when the windows vista progress bar was loading, but it never even gets to the log in screen. I thought it might be windows, so I tried the dual boot of Ubuntu and that didn't get to the log in screen either. I then tried reformatting the computer, and I could boot to CD and install windows. But then after rebooting I get the same wavy dots/stripes across the screen. They go away when the progress bar comes up loading vista, but once again the screen goes blank and windows vista log in fails to load. I've tried the dell diagnostics, and all the parts pass - so I'm not quite sure what the problem is.

The laptop itself is about 4 years old. Its a Dell Inspiron 9400, Intel Centrino Duo processor. nVidia 7900GS graphics card.

Any help would be much appreciated.

There is no dedicated Windows 8 Driver for the ATI Mobility X300/X600/X1300/X1400 graphics cards but I have documented that the Windows Vista Driver R153383.exe will install and work reliably in Microsoft Windows8.
The steps for installation are listed below:

Download the R153383.exe drvier from: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails?driverId=R153383 and extract the compressed files, then cancel the automatic installation of the driver (It crashed out on me when I ran the install)
From The Style UI interface, move the mouse pointer to the lower left corner, and Right Click, select Device Manager from the pop-up menu.
Click the arrow next to Display Adapter, Microsoft Basic Display should be listed.
Right Click the Microsoft Basic Display and click Update Driver, then select Browse My Computer ...., then Click Let Me Pick From a List ....
Click the HAVE DISK Button in the Install from Disk Window, browse to the C:\Dell\Drivers\R153383\Packages\Driver\Display\LH_INF folder and click CL_45540.inf then Click Open and OK to install the driver.

I have completed this process on both an Inspiron E1505/6400 and Inspiron 6000 and both systems are working fine, even power management seems to function well.

A:How to install Windows 8 video/graphics drivers for an Inspiron 6000/6400/E1505/8600/9100/9200/9300/9400/E1705 Latitude D610/D810 or Inspiron XPS notebook system

Can you get a multiple display with a projector? I was able to get the ATI Mobility x300 as the display adapter, but I can only get one display at a time. With XP, I could see my laptop screen duplicated on a projector and I would like to be able to do the same under Windows 8.
When I check the display with the Control Panel, it allows for only one display and the monitor is a generic PnP monitor and the adapter is the Microsoft Basic Display driver.
I didn't use the method that you suggested to get the X300 adapter.
Any suggestions?
Thank you.

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 and think of upgrading to an SSD (likely the 40 GB Intel since I don't need much space).

I removed the HDD and saw it is a 100 GB SATA from June 2006. Hitachi HTS721010GSA00 with 7200 rpm. no cables, it seems to plug right into the power and SATA plug inside the laptop. Wil that be the same type as a new SSD? I mean position of the plugs. there is a little plastic piece from the laptop case attached to the HDD. I wonder how that transfers to the SSD?

Will I encounter any problems? I didn't see any laptop-specific the Newegg Laptop SSDs bring me straight to the normal SSDs.

From what Intels says it seems to be very similar in dimensions

I googled to some, but didn't get clear answers.

A:SSD in 4 year old Inspiron 9400

From what I know, it should work fine as long as your laptop uses SATA. Even if it uses 1.5Gb/s SATA the drive should be backwards compatible. However, someone with more experience with SSD's should be able to tell you for sure.

EDIT: It seems that you'll be limited to 150MB/s but thats not much lower than most SSDs are rated.

Hi,

I appreciate that there are a few threads on this subject, but i just wanted to describe my specific issue, plus what I have done to diagnose; in the hope that I can find a solution.

As the thread title suggests, I am coming across the error:

*** Hardware malfunction
Call your hardware vendor for support
NMI: Parity check/ memory parity error
*** The system has halted***

This happens typically when using graphics-based applications, mainly during Internet Explorer use, and mostly when running the PC game, Football Manager 2009 (this is the only game I have installed).

I am running a Dell Inspiron 9400, two years old, on 981 Mhz, 2.00GB RAM, Intel Centrino Duo, ATI Mobility Radeon X1400....

Having researched this issue thoroughly through this forum and others, I have run the following diagnostics:

- memtest86+

- windows diagnostic tool (run 12 times)

- Video memory stress test

- Dell diagnostics on system startup.

These tests have resulted in producing no errors whatsoever. I appreciate that many replies have pointed towards the RAM, but as I said, memory tests (although never completely conclusive) have returned nothing. I have stopped short of removing RAM as I have never opened my laptop up inside.

My admittedly newbie suspicions point towards a video card issue, as the blue screen error/crash occures when running aformentioned apps such as a PC game, although I have updated the video card driver through device manager.

I know this is a little outdated, but need all the drivers needed and order to install with a fresh cd install of windows 7 sp1

I found the info here years ago and can no longer find it with listed drivers for the upgrade.

I installed windows 7 sp1 and the laptop does not work well, very slow. Did one at a time device driver and tried to update drivers, not any better.

I will do another clean install if I can get the needed info.

Thanks for your help

I purchased this laptop in 2006. It was running on WIndows 7 Ultimate, and, before gifting it to a friend I thought I'd try applying the WIndows 10 upgrade.
I was a little surprised, but the upgrade worked with no issues. The video driver is the generic WIndows driver, and display function is fine. All functions are working; wireless, touchpad, sound, Office 2013 apps, browsers (chrome, firefox), antivirus, etc. There are no resource-intensive apps loaded; not used for gaming; but for Internet access, basic office apps, etc. it's working well.
Totally subjective, but seems a little faster than on Windows 7.

The legacy AGP driver for the Radeon 9XXX card from vista works fine if you have that option.

I'm having trouble tacking down an audio driver for my Dell Inspiron E1705/9400. It has a Sigmatel 9200 HD Audio Codec.

As Indicated from device manager
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7690&SUBSYS_102801CD&REV_1022

VEN 8384 - Sigmatel
DEV 7690 -9200 HD Audio Codec
SUBSYS 102801 - Dell

The audio card is able to output sound however while playing back any prolonged audio, ie music, the playback is unacceptably interrupted with digital artifacts such as skips and pops. This behavior is experienced using a variety of drivers. All drivers have been uninstalled using device manager and then the system has been rebooted before installing the next driver. Also all of the other dell recommended drivers have been installed without a hitch. Finally all windows patches are up to date.

I started with the driver provided by Microsoft and continued to try the recommended driver from dell, R171788. I have also tried the following additional driver packages from dell, R108276, R147073, and R171789.

Additional Information:
OS: Windows 7 x86 Home Premium
Dell Service Tag: BSCDK91

Thank you for any input!

Hello, i have bios version A07, and i want to upgrade my cpu since it is very weak for gaming. Can i upgrade to an i7 870? Here in the list of compatible CPUs by the chipset h57, the i7 870 is listed: ark.intel.com/.../Intel-H57-Express-Chipset

If not what is the best cpu i can upgrade? Maybe i5 760 or Xeon X3470?

Thanks

A:is i7 870 going to work on dell inspiron 580?

Hello CSANDREAS1,
The Inspiron 580 has been tested with the below processors.
Intel® Pentium™ G6950Intel® Core™ i3 - 530, 540 Intel® Core™ i5 - 750, 650
Your findings in relation to the processor being compatible is correct. However, since the processor has not been tested on this platform, I am unable to assure you 100% flawless functionality.

Hi, I have a dell insprion 660 and want to upgrade my gpu. My computer is the standard mini tower one, not the slim version. So I am wondering if a ASUS GeForce GTX 950 MINI-GTX950-2G 2GB 128-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready Video Cards will work with my computer. I already bought a 500w psu so I got that cover, but I don't if this card will work. Its a dual slot card and the pci is 3.0, will that work with this computer?
Here a link to that card I am thinking of buying www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx

My Inspiron 660 version is with Core i5 3330 and 8GB RAM.
The BIOS is UEFI version 2.7.
My question is simple, will a GTX 960 work on this PC? (I already have upgraded the PSU, so no issue there, and it is a 6.7-inch card, so it will fit no issue)
I am just worried about the BIOS compatibility.
Hopefully someone can help me out.
Thanks!

A:Will a GTX 960 work on a Dell Inspiron 660?

BIOS incompatibility with video cards is usually a problem with much older computers. If there is a problem, update the bios. Make sure the card is in the first slot and that the secondary power cord(s) are plugged in. Most of these cards actually need two 6-pin power cords. Does your new supply have enough amps for the card?
If there is a problem, you can try resetting the BIOS/CMOS memory by removing and installing the system board battery; leave out for 10 seconds or so. You could also have a problem with the BIOS Safe Boot feature. Safe Boot protects the computer from changes in configuration, such as BIOS viruses or hardware changes. You might need to deactivate Safe Boot, restart the 660 and then restart Safe Boot.

I am having trouble enabling my Bluetooth on my laptop. It is enabled in the BIOS and I went to the Dell website and downloaded the Dell Bluetooth software and it prompted me to enable it by pressing (FN + F2) and that turned off my wireless card and did not turn on the Bluetooth. I looked inside the Control Panel and did not see an option for Bluetooth Devices. Please assist.

I think there is a combo webcam microphone built-in.  The microphone will not work.  I have checked all the settings - everything is turned on, volume is up - have rebooted, checked drivers, etc. etc.  No luck whatsoever.

A:Dell Inspiron 15 microphone does not work

Hello.Re-install your audio driver. Next, go to the Recording tab of the Sound properties -- right click on the audio icon on the taskbar (path will be different if you have Win8)

and then right click on the blank white area and in the context menu select to show both "disconnected" and "disabled" devices.
If "microphone array" or "internal mic" shows up then select it as the default recording device.
If you still don't get "mic array" then open the Dell Webcam Central program that should be on your computer and click on the mic icon (it is hard to see -- look to the right of the camera icon) and see if you can start the mic array from there. Note that if Webcam Central says "Plug in a supported device" then either you don't have a webcam or it is not working.
If still no luck then the mic array might have become disconnected. Contact tech support to schedule a repair if you are under warranty. http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dellcare/en/contact_technical_support?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&DoNotRedirect=y
If you need more help then please reply back with your full model name and the name of your operating system.

Hi,

Basically I'm 19, I live on my own, and whilst I know the basics about laptops I aren't at all genius' like the lot of you. I've tried to read through some of the posts and find it really difficult so if anyone knows the answer to my problem please try to pretend you're talking to an alien and give it in simple terms.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 that is about a month out of warranty so Dell won't help. It came up with an error about two weeks ago saying Time And Date Clock Stopped or something very similar. I took it to a local technician who changed the clock battery or something like that. It was a tiny circle thing. It worked for a couple hours and then went dead and wouldn't do anything at all. Wouldn't turn on or light up or anything. They then said they had forgot to attach the switch that goes under the keyboard that it needs to turn back on so I went back and he reattached the clip, but still it doesn't work.

My friends baby crawled on top of the laptop when the lid was down and hey presto it worked again! Then a few days later the same happened and it just won't turn on. Could something be loose? Or is it just dead? My local technician says it might be the motherboard? I don't understand why it would work after a baby had sat on it, surely it means something clicked in to place?

I put the charger in and I know it works but the light on the laptop that should come on to say its charging stays off.... Read more

For a Dell Inspiron laptop whose 65w charger has died and has no battery, will a 90w HP charger which fits work?

The Universal Chargers we find at Best Buy here are all 90w too and are guaranteed to work, so not sure why a 90W HP charger wouldn't work - but want to ask first to be sure.

Thanks.

I was in the process of looking for a computer for my friend to buy, cause he needs a new one, and I've run into a small road block.
I don't know if a card such as the GeForce 9400 GT that says it uses a PCI-E x16 2.0 slot will work with the Gateway DX4720-03 he was planning on buying from newegg here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883113078

It doesn't say anywhere that I can find on the internet if the slot on there is 2.0 or not.

My questions are:
Will the card that says it needs 2.0 work if the slot turns out to be 1.0?
What IS the slot on that computer? is it 2.0 or not?

A:GeForce 9400 GT work with Gateway DX4720-03?

it does not really matter, the card will work either way, but on that computer I bet it is not a 2.0.

Hello guys,

This is my first post and i hope you can help me out. I have a Geforce 9400GT videocard (i know, not the best one :P) and i used to have Windows Vista Ultimate as OS. The problem is, i've installed the RC version of Windows 7 and and since then, using the latest WHQL drivers (186.18), i can't make my TV-OUT to work. In fact, i can't even find my tv, even when i choose to hard detect.

I'm using a S-video cable to connect my videocard to my tv and it worked fine for ages. Any suggestions? I've tried to install an old driver version (163.75) but it says that it can't locate any drivers compatible with my hardware.

I like to watch my home movies on my tv but it's been one month, since the new OS that i can't.

Cheers from Brazil!

A:nVidia Geforce 9400 GT - Can't make TV-Out work

You could try this driver. You didn't mention 32 or 64 bit, but they're both here.

GeForce ForceWare 190.15 Win 7 | Vista | XP

Also, do you have a second S-Video cable to try? Doubtful, but it could have coincidentally went bad.

Dell Inspiron 9400 LT
Win XP Pro

XP updaes will not install, and it takes 10 minutes for it to start up. Browsers don't always take me where I want to go.

ETC.

I reviewed a similiar situation in another post and am going to try those tecniques.

A:My Dell 9400 is infected, but I am unable to determine by what.

That slow start could be caused by too many items in startup, a failing hdd, a very fragmented hdd or malware.
Suggest you backup all important files or create an image of the entire drive and store it on an external medium. If the
hdd is failing, the more you use it the more likely it will become unbootable and unable to recover files.

Use CCleaner to cleanup the crud. Once you have done that open CCleaner and click on Tools and choose Startups.
At the bottom of that page you will see a button when clicked will allow you post the list of programs presently starting up
at boot. Post that list back here.

After you have backed up the computer and posted the list of startups you can run some programs to hopefully find and
remove whatever adware and malware is on the computer.

Use the instructions for Rkill, MBAM, AdwCleaner, Junkware Removal Tool, and Eset online scanner in your previous topic for a different computer.
Make sure that all active security programs are stopped from running/ disabled before running the scans.
