Synchronization issue, offline files has Red Arrow

Q: Synchronization issue, offline files has Red Arrow

I have a user on Windows 2000 Pro who is running offline files to our 2003 Server. Everything was working fine until the other day when he ran Synchronization and then certain folders appeared with a red arrow instead of the original double blue arrows denoting offline files. I have never seen this red arrow, does anyone know what this signifies?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

OK at work we are setting each user's workstation to use offline files and synchronize at log off for user's My Documents. I am wanting to make sure this is the correct way to set it up. The following shows how the offline files are configured now:
1. On the user's workstation I go to My Computer\Tools\Folder Options and I enable Offline Files and set them to sync at log off. Now, we have each user's My Documents, which is located on their desktop, set to point to a back up server on the network- example: \\backupserver\users\users name. So actually their My Docs are on a shared network drive that we want to make available offline.
2. I right click on the user's My Documents, which is on their desktop pointed to their folder on the back up server, and select Make Available Offline. After the synchronization is through then it shows blue sync arrows. I make the users my docs folder available online, i don't right click and make their folder available offline from the shared network, I figure if their my docs on the desktop are pointing to that shared drive that by making their my docs folder available offline that is right. It's kind of confusing though.

Does this make sense? Or should I be doing this another way?

A:Setting Offline Files & Synchronization

That's sounds correct. If you are on a domain you can configure a folder redirection/offline files GPO and push it out to everyone instead of configuring one at a time.

I would like to know if something here is wrong.  The issue is that the user's files are not being copied to the network location and are remaining in the offline files cache.

I've waited over two hours for any "background synchronization" to happen, but so far all the files are still in the offline files cache and not on the server.  What is the frequency that the background synchronization happens?  Thank
you for the help!

A:Frequency of Background Synchronization For Offline Files

I figured it out, although I don't know why it's this way.  The "Everyone" group needs the permission "List Folder / Read Data" allowed, otherwise the initial background synchronization does not work.
I don't like this because now anyone can see what's in this directory :(

Could someone please tell me what the different colors on the synchronization indicators on folders that you would see in explorer mean? They seem to change from blue to red to yellow and I cannot discern a pattern or reason. I just did a search for a file on my server and they turned red.

Could someone please explain why subfolders do not synchronize when that option is selected when making a folder available for off line use? The folders that I mention were created after I made the main folder available for off line.

I've got a situation here whereby .TMP files are appearing in network directories, and the files are going missing. The size of the TMP file matches the original file.
I'm trying to narrow down the issue, because I think there may be two problems here.
1. Offline Files are enabled, to allow profile redirection.    It seems that this is also by default, is allowing Clinet Side Caching when there are network issues.  Does the original file (.doc for example)  get renamed
as a HR234.TMP for example when the Slow link detection sees slow performance?
2.  If the above TMP file is created when there are network issues, should this resolve itself (sync itself back to the network) when performance improves?
Currently we are in a situation where we have a department that have files missing from many network shares, all the missing files seemlingly replaced with a .TMP file, so do we have to go round to every machine in the department, and manually
sync them to resolve this?

I'd like to find all machines in our domain which have an active configuration of offline file synchronization.
Where can I find such a configuration? I'd like do it as login script and write the result to a file.
So a registry key or something similar would be fine. I tried it already with the CscService running or in the registry at this location: HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CSC but this did not yet really match. I have a lot of wrong hits.
Any ideas?

since yesterday we have problems with computers where the offline files are enabled and the cache is encrypted.

Users cannot save files the message access is denied is coming up.

It's possible to create a file, which has then 0 bytes and when opening the file the same message is coming up.

If we do not encrypt the offline cache via GPO, everything runs normally again.

This setup worked now for several years without problems.

I'm sitting with a big issue at a customer and ask for your help.
- 3x Windows 2008 R2 file servers configured in DFS
- approx. 500x Windows 7 clients (Laptops)
- 3x network shares, Common1, Common2 and Homefolder.
- "Offline Files" and "Folder Redirection" enabled for entire user profile.
- Everything is controlled by GPOs and there are no login scripts.
Due to some faulty settings in the client GPO and the fact that the "Common" shares was set to allow Offline Caching of files and folders, the majority of clients now suffer from sync issues and conflicts.
Most of the conflicted files are located in the users home folder, but some users are also seeing the same issues with files located on the "Common" shares. The users themselfes are not allowed to enable Offline Files as this is disabled by GPOs.
The only folders that should be treated as Offline Files are the ones in the users home folder.
A new set of GPOs have been created that correctly set up "Offline Files" and "Folder Redirection". These are linked to a test-OU and the computers and users applied to that OU are not suffering from the problems above.
When we move a client, the cache will be deleted and all non-sync'd work will be lost.
Today we manually look at every users sync center and try to resolve the conflicts before we move them to the new OU. This is extremely time consuming when... Read more

I have looked through all the similar threads but still couldn't find a solution to this.  We have Windows 7 machines logging into a Windows 2008 AD networks. While on the network, our clients are set to use internal DNS set by DHCP. A few of our
folks have offline files setup on their home drives.  These users can successfully log onto their computers offline.  When they attempt to access their offline files however, they receive the message "The system has detected a possible attempt
to compromise security. Please ensure that you can contact the server that authenticated you" along with the option to provide their credentials. Entering their credentials fails of course. The work around for them is to disconnect from the wireless network
or disable the WLAN card. At that point they can access their offline files.  But as soon as they reboot, they receive the same message.  If they reboot with the WLAN card disabled, they will not receive this message and are able to access their
offline files.  Additionally these users are setup with VPN. If they enable VPN, the issue is corrected and they can again access their offline files.

We've attempted removing and rejoining to AD, removing their user profiles and completely rebuilding the laptop from scratch. It appears when the laptop is connected to a wireless network, it wants to contact our AD network. The articles below haven't offered
a solution.

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help. I have been Googling all over the place last couple of days and looking through hundreds of regkeys but cannot find the answer.

We have 1800 PC's using Offline files to a NAS location. Even though the Group Policy is set to force PC's Offline no matter what the latency value. I have noticed some PC's that have Offline files enabled but are set to work online. Maybe set manually
before the GPO was applied. Anyway I was wondering if there is a way to detect on numerous PC's whether a PC is set to work Offline or Online? I have been looking to see if a regkey changes when the Work Offline / Online button is pressed on the file menu
of the redirected folder.

I have found a key that changes if you hit the button Work Online/ Offline button
manually HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache\OnlineTransitionLog Value - (name of nas share) but this clears when the PC is rebooted or logged out and does not reappear unless you do the switch again manually.
This will not work when I try to scan all the PC's.

Help would be much appreciated.

I have a user who has a laptop and desktop. He uses the same login for both machines. On the laptop he made the root of a network drive available offline, so it synchronized everything in the drive to his laptop.

Now, if he creates a new folder in the root of this drive on his laptop, it is automatically marked to be synchronized as well. This is fine.

But if he does the same thing on his desktop, it does not automatically set it up to be synchronized on the laptop. Everyone I have asked cannot tell me if it's supposed to be that way, or if there is an issue, but the user is convinced it is supposed to work automatically.

Any thoughts?

A:ISSUE: Groove Synchronization

Hi there, welcome to the board!

I don't have Groove, so this may not be much help at all. I do have SharePoint Workspace though, which is based on Groove technology. In it you can set your account preferences, like identities, check accounts (i.e. remote computers), and things like security, alerts and synchronization. Have you checked out any of these options in Groove?

Here are some links which may prove helpful:

Controlling Network Access to the Groove Manager Web Site

Configure and customize SharePoint Workspace 2010

In the last link check out the "For Administrators" section.

Above all of this, it would seem to me that if it's that much of a security concern you would either disable or remove Groove altogether in this instance. Intellectual property theft is a pretty serious crime in most countries. At least in the US it is.

I want to work on A and then have whatever changes I make on A synchronized onto B, so that I can continue the work as if no change occurred.

For normal file synchronization, I use Karen's Replicator which does file synchronization very well. I also used to use a now unsupported program called "Carbon Copy" which did remote access and control as well as file synchronization.

I have a brand new Spectre x360 (13-w023dx) - about two weeks old. After using it for a few days, I have realized that one key (the right arrow key -- bottom right most key) does not have the same "tactile" press and click as all other keys on the otherwise great keyboard. When I do press it and feel the more mushy click, it still doesn't register the actual key press. I have to mush down on the key a bit harder until the key press is actually registered by the OS. Again, brand new. Absolutely nothing has been spilt on the keyboard. I recognized this shortly after getting it, but only recently has it become annoying. Much I can do about fixing myself?

Windows 8.1 Mail app push email notification for Outlook account, Calendar and People automatic synchronization stopped working yesterday (it was working for one year). I haven't changed anything. Note it stopped working
on two different devices at the same time. The only way to get new email messages or sync Calendar/People is manual synchronization by the Sync button now. No error messages in Event log, I also tried to reinstall all three apps, no change.

I believe it is a server issue because TcpView now reports connection to
dub407-m.hotmail.com server on both devices affected while it was something like
snt000-m.hotmail.com (I don't remember the number exactly) before when it had worked. It seems to be my Microsoft account specific issue because notifications/synchronization on other Microsoft account where Mail, Calendar and People apps are
connected to col403-m.hotmail.com server still works.
Short summary:

I don't know where to report it and I also don't want to create a new Microsoft account to "fix" that hoping it won't be redirected to the dub407-m server node again.

My offline files seems to work offline all the time, even when it shows me being online. I sync most of my business files to my laptop for working at home at night.

When I edit a file from my Win 7 (pro, 64-bit) laptop, then go to edit it again, I get the version I had changed, but no one else does. This is causing huge difficulty, because my employees will start working in a sales forecast spreadsheet after I reconnect to the network and supposedly sync, but they don't get the latest version. Even doing a manual sync seems to make no difference.

It seems that if someone else edits something on the network share, it does update to my laptop, but when I update something, it doesn't transfer so that everyone else can use it?

Where should we begin looking?

A:Offline files doen't update files changed locally

It may help if you enable transparent caching which can be enabled through Group Policy. I'm not sure this is the same problem but it seems to apply to your problem.

Windows 7 introduces a new feature for Offline Files & Folders called “Transparent Caching”. With transparent caching, the first time a user opens a file in a shared folder, Windows 7 reads the file from the server and then stores it in a cache on the computer’s hard disk drive.

The second and subsequent times a user reads the same file, Windows 7 retrieves the cached file from disk instead of reading it from the server. To provide data integrity, Windows 7 always contacts the server to ensure the cached copy is up-to-date.

The cache is never accessed if the server is unavailable and updates to the file are always written directly to the server. Transparent Caching is not enabled by default and can be enabled through Group Policy at Computer configuration | Administrative Templates | Network | Offline Files | Enable Transparent Caching.

I already searched through alot of threads but could not find anyone having the exact same issue.
We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with SP1 which is hosting a DFS Namespace.
A customer of us works with his notebook (Win 7 SP 1) and has enabled Offline Files for his personal folder
in the DFS path. The initial synchronisation seemed to work and no sync errors are reported in Sync Center.

Now the problem is, everytime he opens a document from his DFS path and saves it, a .tmp file gets
created there and doesnt disappear. Not even after reboot. As far as i know it happens with Word, Excel and PDF documents.

If I log on to the server and browse to his path, i cannot see those .tmp files, only he can see it.
If I try to delete those files from his notebook I get an error "File is no longer located in... Verify the itemīs location and try again".
What I have tried so far:
If Offline Files get disabled, those .tmp files disappear. On activating they are visible again.
Tried "Delete temporary files" from Sync Center -> Manage Offline Files -> Disk Usage. Nothing happened.
I tried to repair Office, didnīt help.
The only Group Policy Settings we have relating to Offline Files are "Synchronize all offline files before logging off"
and "Allow or Disallow use of the Offline Files Feature" which is enabled.

Would be nice if someone can get me into the right direction to fix this issue.

So I only noticed this problem a few days ago, I've never had the issue before. I used to game a lot more on my laptop, WoW, Crysis, CSS, lots more, everything ran fine. Specs are:
Windows 7 Professional
Processor: Intel Core2 Duo P9500 @ 2.53GHz
4 Gigs ram
Video Card: Nvidia Geforce 9800M GT

Alright so I haven't really played many games in the past few weeks, but the laptop has always run everything perfectly. Played through Crysis with settings on High with no problems. So a few days ago I installed Assassin's Creed (original) and after about 10 minutes of playing the game I experiences a lag spike that lasted for about 15 seconds. Basically, the sound continued fine but the game's fps seemingly dropped down to like 2. After a bit the game sped back up and was fine, but every few minutes this happens.

I then went to play Left4Dead 2 online, and the same thing happens. Its not the servers or my internet of course, no one else is affected while playing online. So, I decided to test it on one more game, and booted Counter-Strike: Source. I played the game for quite a while experiencing no lag spikes at all.

I really can't figure out what the issue is. I checked all my drivers and their current, I ran a defrag, spyware scan, CCleaner. I even did a system restore to about 2 weeks ago (Windows had done some updates recently) and still had the issue.

I've looked but haven't been able to find any solution that fixes my problem on the forums. I... Read more

I recently moved my laptop hard drive to my desktop. Windows 8.1.1 worked just fine but win 7 hangs @ the startup logo. Everything worked just fine in my laptop so there's no malware preventing it from booting, just a bad driver.
Any help is appreciated.

We have few laptops (windows 7 pro) for sales rep and Offline file enable to sync their documents which are on SBS 2011 server.
I don't know why it try to sync some other users (My video , My music , etc ) files and error says "access denied" or

“The Process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process”

we have tried many times and confirm there's no one using those files but still same error
I found this article on forumbut not sure how much this valid to SBS 2011, and if it's known issue why not there's fix patch yet from Microsoft

On the 2003 server I had to ADD this reg entry and set it to 0:
OplocksDisabled REG_DWORD 0 or 1
Default: 0 (not disabled)

And then Changed this entry to 1:

EnableOplocks REG_DWORD 0 or 1
Default: 1 (enabled)

I had a home user come to the office and she was having trouble getting on our network. I turned off off-line files because she doesn't need to sync files to the office on this computer when she comes in anymore on that computer.

Come to find out she was storing all her personal files on the offline drive that we create for each individual here and set it up as offline so files are backed up here in the office.

I have told her to turn off her laptop and do nothing else on it until I look at it. Is there a way to get all those files back that went away when I turned off the offline files? I don't want to do anything until I am sure I make the best move knowing that once those deleted files are overwritten on the hard drive they may still be recoverable in some way.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to get these files back on her hard drive. Just to be clear they were all on the offline folder of a network drive. I turned off off-line files and they were never syncronized up to the server before I did it.
Thanks for your help.

Hi there,

I have redirected "documents" folder to point our local storage.
Two windows 7 ultimate computers are connected to same location ex.: \\file-server\common-files\

When "computer1" save word, excel, or power point files in \\file-server\common-files\test\test.doc "computer2" see that file with the name like HU87GH.TMP
The file size is correct, however, the file remains unusable from computer2.

What could be the probl?m?

Many thanks for your time.

A:offline files - .TMP files generated

Is the network location a NAS (synology, qnap etc) ?

I have the same problem with a Synology DS209+II and I suspect it has to do with Windows not being able to communicate properly with samba shares, even though the newest Firmware (DSM 3.0) explicitly allows you to activate "Support for Windows Offline Files".

Keeping your offline files in sync

When you select a network file or folder to make available offline, Windows automatically creates a copy of that file or folder on your computer.

My question is---WHERE does it save that copy? In what folder? Can I set the folder I want the copy to be in and HOW do I do it?
Thank You for any help.

A:using offline files

It's located in the C:\Windows\CSC folder

To change it, do the following:
Open "OFFLINE FILES" (In Win8 you hit START and just type Offline files, should be the same in Win7)
Click "Disable offline files"
Run regedit.
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CSC
Right-click CSC, New -> Key, and name it as Parameters.
Right-click Parameters, New -> String Value, name it as CacheLocation.
Right-click CacheLocation, then Modify.
In the Value data box, type the name of the new folder (make sure you created it) you want to create the cache, like this: \??\drive:\folder
Where it?s Windows NT format for folder path name, with drive for drive letter and folder as folder name. For example: \??\D:\csc
Restart the computer.
Click on Enable Offline Files.
Restart the computer.
All new offline folders will be cached and saved to that new location.

During the week, we had a power outage...
Network went flop

Ever since then a Win2K Pro now always disconnected from teh network... After about 5 minutes a message pops up stating, you are no longer connected to <server name> in the taskbar. It's the Sync. Manager. At first boot, DHCP gives the IP and what not but then 5 mins later I get that message. Never used Offline files before. Packets still get passed but...puter goes to offline mode.

Now (actually this is someone else's puter having the problem and now I'm lookin' like a duface), I can enable and disable the using of offline files on my machine (tools>options>offline files) however, on this particular machine, that tab is not there.
Machine as stated is Win2K Pro SP2 FAT32 (not my doing).
I upgraded to SP3...tab did not show
During the 5 minutes of good network time, downloaded and installed all available critical updates (win update)... tab did not show.

What else can I do to rectify this (without re-imaging the system)??
Thanks All

I am not sure if I am in the correct forum but here is my problem. I am using Windows XP Professional and I am on a company network. My boss has been out on medical leave and took her computer home with her so she could do work while she recovers. I have access to some Excel files that are on her computer and I have been working offling in them while she has been out. This past Friday, I was sick and could not come into work but my boss was able to come in for a few hours to help out during the busy time and she worked on my computer. I came in on Monday and can no longer access the offline files I have been working in for the last three months. When I try to open a file it tells me that the file cannot be found and to check my spelling or try another path. My boss swears she changed nothing on my computer and was not able to even go into those files. Does anyone have a clue how I can access my offline files? Everything I have read states I will have to delete them but I would lose three months worth of work that I might never be able to recover. Is there any other way?

A:Offline Files

They are either there in the way you access them as per this article or they are NOT and there is NO way to recover them, as they were of course NEVER on your computer.

I have an XP machine which has filled the C drive with Offline Files Synchronizing.
This is something that was setup years ago, and just kicked in again this week somehow.
It has synchronized 20GB of files to the C drive. C drive is only 37GB. Windows folder is 25 GB.
I started to delete the offline files, but the process failed (a device attached is not functioning - I think that was the message).
Now I have Offline Files not enabled.
There is obviously still about 20 GB of storage on this drive, which I want to clear off, but the Offline Files Folder shows empty.

Does anyone know a way to clear up this ?

A:XP Offline Files

Click Start > My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > Offline Files tab > uncheck "Enable Offline Files.

Note that if the function is set in group policy, it will reset to enabled again after you log back into the network. There may be additional settings you can choose that effectively allow you to keep it from working. You may be able to unselect the server(s) that you synchronize with, etc. You may have to do this each time you log into the network depending on policy settings on your network.

Is there a policy that anyone is aware of that would prevent "traveling users'" from synchronizing offline files with the server when they establish a VPN connection.

This being as some users have offline files totalling over 3GB, that then wish to sync with the server the moment they establish a VPN connection....

I am aware that this can be prevented by running "mobsync" and "configuring" not to sync on certain connections. This have to be done manually at each machine and checked every time a new connection is configured at that machine.

The same problem is experienced when "traveling users" work temporarily at a branch where there is a site-to-site VPN connection between the branches. As their local LAN connection allows for synchronization, massive amounts of data is then "synched" between the branches.

Preferably these "traveling users" should be using their local offline file cache, until they are back at their respective branch.

Any idees please?

We are redirecting My Documents to the userprofile network location for users.  Last week we migrated to 2 new split-scope DHCP servers on Thursday, had set our lease times to 1 hour, and then Thursday and Friday had users reboot and verified
they were registering with the new DHCP servers.  As of Friday everything seemed to be successful.

Yesterday my manager came in to start work, having turned off and taken his Surface Pro 3 running Windows 8.1 home with him on Friday, but not having powered it up over the weekend.  He had been working on a presentation on Friday that is due
this Wednesday.  When he logged in Monday morning he had 1 document in his "Documents" library.  (Redirected My Documents).  He called and I was able to see all of his documents on his ..\userprofile\username\documents network share
on the server.

We rebooted, ran a couple of GPUpdate /force commands, and my manager was able to see his documents.  The latest "date modified" looked to be 4-28-2016 around noon - which was Thursday.

He started working around 8:45 or 9 using those documents from 4-28-2016, worked until noon yesterday (5-2-2016) and saved multiple copies of his documents to his "Documents" library, where he typically saves them.  He then logged
off his workstation, went to lunch, and when he came back, he was missing specifically those documents that he had worked on.  All other files in his My Docum... Read more

after much searching the internet (and this forum), ive given up looking and resorting to just asking. heres my problem:
on my computer i have a 40gb hd and a 160gb hd, i got the 160 to hold my music and my work (mainly 3d modelling and animation stuff) and the 40 for the system drive. right now i have my work stored on a network drive, but i want to make it available offline. but if i make it available offline it'll go to the default folder on the 40. is there any way to change the location of the offline folder to a specific folder on the 160? either by 3rd party program or preferably in windows itself? any info would be much appreciated! thanks!

So all you want to do is copy it from the network drive to the folder of your choice? Or do you want to be able to access the work, while you aren't online (but still on the network)?

I'm having an issue with one of my mobil users and offline files. When they are away and work on files designated as available offline or create new files in folders that are available offline after a reboot they are shown as place holders. Greyed with an X next to them and unavailable. No way to open/use them.

After returning to the office or dialing into the VPN the files return to available.

My computer is connected to a network via hub and workgroup, there are files on a network drive wich id like mo make awailable offline (it's a laptop so it's not always connected to the network) it works fine unless the file types are .DBS , .MDB or DBD... Then I get the error messages that windows can not synchronize these file types...?

Offline files do support active database files.... found that out the hard way. (it assumes the file is still open and will not move into your machine)
