Printer problems print button grayed out - test print page fails

Q: Printer problems print button grayed out - test print page fails

Hi, I just purchased an used computer with Windows 7Home Premium x64, this is an HP Slimline s5610f. The problem that I have is with a Brother HL 2040 series printer. It gave me a really hard time to install the drivers that I downloaded from the Brother website I kept getting a "0x00000057" error and "could not find suitable driver for this printer" error. Finally I decided to take the driver folders for this printer from my wife's computer and copied them to my computer and put them in the drivers repository under System32 and was able to install the printer after that with no problems.

The problem that I have right now is that the printer won't print, even though it told me that the driver installation was successful.

1-the print button is grayed out
2-If I click "printer properties" it tells me that the drivers have not been installed and asks if I want to install them.
3-If I install the drivers at this prompt it tells me that the drivers have been successfully installed.
4-Now it lets me access the printer properties but when I click "print test page" either nothing happens or it tells me that it failed to print and access is denied
5-If i close printer properties and try to access it again it tells me that the printer drivers have not been installed.

I get the same results with the printer connected locally trough USB or on another computer through the network.
All the other computers in the house print to this printer without a problem through the network.
The printer server is running Ubuntu 12.04
It seems like a permission problem.

Thanks, I appreciate any help that I can receive on this.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have firefox v49 (portable version from portableapps.com) and when I choose print and select MS print to pdf, it goes through the motions but the file does not get created.

I can use the test print function with success and also it worked from edge and notepad. Could it be firefox (or my portable version) that is the issue?

Anyone else see this or any ideas how to get it to work with Firefox?

We have a new network printer, an HP LaserJet P4515, which is on our network. We added it today, and installed it via adding a new TCP/IP port, the usual way that we install network printers. It works for three out of four users that we installed the printer with. The fourth user is not able to print the test page, it just says pending, then error- failed to print.

I have a home network with an XP system with a printer attached and shared. A Windows 7 laptop and my old XP laptop from work can print fine, but a new Windows 8 laptop won't print. Sharing from the XP system works as I can read files from the XP system on the new Win8 system. When I do an Add Printer on the Windows 8 laptop, I can see the network printer and install it and the driver so the printer shows up as installed on the Win8 system. The Print Test Page does not work nor printing from WordPad. I turned off the Firewall on the XP system in case that was the problem. I don't know what else to try.

I ended up installing a virtual machine on the server with windows 8.1 the i RDP to the virtual machine and worked flawless no drivers were even needed to install. What i think might be the problem on the windows server is it uses the easy driver first rather then the driver of the device. But it was much easier putting a new virtual machine acting as a print server

I just formatted the hard drive and installed the OS. Downloaded the printer driver from Canon's website and installed it. I'm able to print a test page and align the printer heads, but when I try to print from any application, it comes back with this message:

"An error occurred during this operation"

I hit OK and then it closes. No print dialogue box.

Everything is fine in device manager.

This old printer worked wonderful. I would like to re-install it. When I send a test page to it Printer Settings reports One document in Que, Status Printing, but it doesn't print.

I have connected the printer with a parallel cable and in the printer window it said Ready Standby.

I download driver R166996 and unpacked it to C:/Program Files/Dell/Win32/PCL/English/dixblzi and clicked Open. It said Installation completed successfully.

I went to Devices and Printer, clicked on Add a Printer, selected Add a Local printer use Existing LPT1, Dell Laser Printer 3000cn PCL6; have Disk, and then I browsed to where I unpacked the driver. The installation Completed successfully.

Why can't I print a test page? I shut off the printer I ran Problem Solver. It cleared Que. I tried to print a test page again and it sent the Test page to the printer but it still didn't print.

I unplugged the printer, rebooted the system, plugged it in and tried to send a test page again. It still didn't print. How can it be that Windows 7 sees the printer, the printer reports everything is Ready and yet it doesn't print?

I believe the printer is in working order but something is wrong with the communications. Can someone help me.

I'm working at an office where when you hit the Print Screen button, it causes a printout in addition to the normal copy to clipboard. I just want to copy to clipboard without wasting toner and paper. It can't be a program on the computer as it's clean with just Windows 8.1

It actually happens on all the machines (whether Windows 7, 8, or 8.1). Is it a program installed on the server? Is it a setting in Windows? How do I stop this behavior?

A:Print Screen button will print to the printer! how to stop

By definition the print screen function only sends the image to the clipboard so if the printer is also involved then something else -- some other software installed on your machine -- is the culprit here.

One way to find out what it is is by unhooking the printer and then watching the screen to see what error messages pop up when trying to use the print screen function.

I have a windows 7 machine that I can print a test page and print from notepad normally, but the machine will not print anything from other applications such as word or excel. I monitor the print que, and the test page shows up, but when I print something from word nothing comes up.

I have deleted the printer, remove the print drivers, install a totally differenet printer and have the same issue. I have tried to print from differenet user profiles with the same issues. The printers work great on other computers.

This is happening to both local printers and network printers. The printers are recognized and test prints works fine.

Any ideas?

A:Can not print anything except from notepad or test page

Some things to try:

Stop and restart the print spooler service

Services - Start or Disable

Scroll down to Print Spooler. It should be started and set to automatic. If it is, stop the service and restart it and try to print.

Start> In search box type Devices and printers> Enter> Confirm your printer is set to default, and not the Microsoft XPS Document writer

If not, right click the printer and choose Set as default printer

Start> All programs> Administrative tools> Computer management> Device manager> Expand printers and look for yellow exclamation marks

Start> In search box type troubleshooting> Enter> Under Hardware and Sound> Use a printer> When the troubleshooter opens, click on next and follow instructions

I am trying to create a shortcut on the desktop for print test page.
I have tried a couple of different googled solutions and cannot find one that works...
First I tried -
cscript C:\Windows\System32\Printing_Admin_Scripts\en-US\prnqctl.vbs -e -p "Brother PJ-622"

I tried this from both a normal and elevated command prompt - logged in user is a local admin - both resulted in
Failed Print Test Page Win32 error code 5

I tried the same command using a -u and -w command to specify the local admin account.  This didnt work either and
I also tried
print /d:printer textpage.txt
just to get something to print... this didnt work..

Ok I had all this typed out and found a powershell solution that works so I am going to go ahead and post this anyways for anyone else to use.  There was alot of ways with powershell 4 using invoke but i found a simpler way with a couple lines to print
to default printer.  This works on powershell version 2.

Create PrintTestPage.ps1 in notepad and save as ps1 file...

$printer = Get-WmiObject -Query " SELECT * FROM Win32_Printer WHERE Default=$true"
$PrintTestPage = $printer.PrintTestPage()

Edit - obviously for the shortcut I just modified the target to the path of the script.

%SystemRoot%\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File C:\MDT\Powershell\PrintTestPage.ps1

1. Uninstall and reinstall the printer drive.

4. Turn off and then turn on the printer.
5. Try to add different printers such as HP, canon and Lexmark. All have the same problem.

Whenever I print to the shared printer on my Windows 7 desktop, the print job will just sit in the print queue. If I stop and then start the print spooler, the job will print. It happens from an XP laptop. Print jobs sent from the local Windows 7 computer print just fine.
How can i solve this one ? :(

This issue with some particular laptop running windows Xp and windows 7 Home

A:Whenever I print to the shared printer he print job will just sit in the print queue

So, the Windows 7 Desktop has the printer physically attached to it and it's shared?
And the XP laptop is sharing the printer through the network? If I understand you correctly?
If so, on the XP Laptop, go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. Are there any devices with yellow flags? Or Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers is there an Unknown Device? Or any listings for the printer? If so, right click it and Uninstall it. Now go to Start/Run and type appwiz.cpl and press enter. In the Add Remove Programs uninstall any drivers or software for the printer. Now,go to Printers and Faxes, and if the printer icons is there, Right click the shared printer icon and Delete it. And Restart the computer. Now when the computer comes back up, go to the printer manufacturers support/download drivers site and type in the model# for the printer and download the driver for the printer for XP and install it. Now, go to Start/Run and type the computer name of the Windows 7 machine (ex) \\ComputerName and press enter. A window should open up with the shared drives on the 7 computer, with the shared printer. Right click the shared printer and choose Connect. This will add the printer to Printers and Faxes again. Right click this printer/Properties and print a Test Page.

Hello to all!

It has been a while since this problem first occurred. Now it has become unbearable. When I try to print, use print preview or enter page setup, Microsoft Word 2003 freezes. The same thing also happens with other Office 2003 programs like Microsoft Excel 2003.

I am not sure if there is a problem with my printer driver (the printer is an HP L2600n by the way) as I have reinstalled it many times AND I have no problem using it as a network printer and can print the same word documents FINE from laptops or other desktop computers in the house. Thus I know that the documents aren't corrupted. I can also print .pdf documents fine from this computer. I think this problem started when my laser printer driver 'disappeared' and when I tried to reinstall it I got a spool-related error. I reinstalled the spool driver and then when I tried to print a .doc file I was unable to do so. The problem may most likely be linked to Office 2003 itself but I have tried options like deleting the data key and renaming the normal.dot template, all which have failed to alleviate the problem.

I think that is all the information I can offer to assist anyone trying to help me with this matter, and I hope that the problem can be fixed without me having to reformat or something like that.

Thank you in advance.

P.S Not sure if this will also come in handy but my OS is Windows XP Professional SP2.

In Office, On the Help menu there is a 'detect and repair' option. It wouldn't hurt to run that. This could also be a sign that the hard drive is going bad (loosing stuff here and there)...

Hello Everyone,
I have tried searching and searching for this problem but nothing seems to come up with this particularly odd problem. I'm actually running 3rd party software hosted on an AS/400 system but from a Windows 7 32-bit computer. If I right-click the title-bar of the window and select print, the print dialog box comes up asking for the printer I want to use. I select one, then click "Print" and the following comes out on the page....
<See Sample.jpg> (Of course, that's not an actual page, it's a representation of what you'd see on the page, but it's accurate despite the fact that it's color. Anyway, the print screens come out light and don't scan in well.)
As you can see, the print dialog box is clearly visible on the page. This seems to randomly crop up only on Windows 7 boxes and once it starts, we seem to have no way to stop it.

Got some machines in our organisation are behaving strangely. When the user presses the 'Print Screen' button to capture an error message or something similar, as well as copying the image to the clipboard, it instantly prints it to the default printer.

I've asked them to close all applications to make sure if wasn't one of the behaviours of a specific program, but this also happens on a fresh reboot with no applications running. The build is the same we've rolled out to many other machines, so we're stumped as to why it's happening within this team.

Has anyone come across this behaviour before?

I have an HP C5280 printer running wirelessly via a TP Link wireless print server and D Link Di 624 wireless router. I can print successfully from either my desktop (which is connected direct to the D Link router) or either of my laptops (wireless). However, when I select the double-sided print option I get a print error message after re-inserting the odd number pages to print the other side of the paper and then click 'continue'.

Could I resolve this by connecting the printer both direct to the desktop using USB AND leaving it connected via the wireless TP Link print server? This would enable me to print double-sided from my desktop (as I did before when the printer was only connected via the USB desktop port).

hello dear sir
I have the problem with my printers in my office . the printers are HP laser jet 1300 and 2035.
my problems is : After I print a document , printer does not stop and printing white papers until I stop print service or power down the printer.
whenI push ctrl+p  to print ,
some files like shockwave.shd appears in this address." c:\windows\system 32\spooler\printers". and these files never vanished unless i stop the print spooler.
I know that  : The following briefly describes the purpose
of SPL, SHD, and TMP files:

SPL files are the actual spool (print job) files.

TMP files are usually associated with LPR print jobs.

SHD files provide information about which printer the print job was sent to and from
whom the print job came. An SHD file is a "shadow" file that keeps track of what logical printer a (same number) xxxxx.spl file goes to. It also contains the file's order in the queue, the user who sent the file to the printer, and other information.
These files are usually deleted unless the logical printer settings state otherwise.
but these files  never vanished and untils these file were removed manually ,
printer cant print at all.
please help me .

But now, when I do the CONTROL + P the form appears, the word PRINT blinks for a moment and is replaced by the word SAVE>
Now I have to go through about 7 separate steps to get the machine to send the page to the Printer, as follows:
1- Click on SAVE
2-next form....select My Documents and type in a file name to which the page will be saved
3 Go to My Document folder
4-Find File Name in My Documents and click on it
5- Click on open space adjacent to file now on the screen
6- Click on PRINT, located in lower right of screen

Thank You...
This is a shot I just took of mine while online..I also use Ctrl + p.

How to set default printer in PDF and print PDF one page at a time

The code below will print a PDF file to a tiff converter driver "PEERNET.DRV ePro 5.0" but I am prompted for a filename (a TIFF file) to print to.
I can only do this after setting "PEERNET.DRV ePro 5.0" as the default printer through the printer panel.

What I want is to be able to set the default printer programmatically, print all pdf file pages to individual TIFF pages (with individual names of course).

Lastly, reset the printer back to the original default printer.

Hi there,
OK, here we go. I previously owned a Lexmark Z25 printer and up to a certain point, it was printing ok. Then it abruptly stopped printing any pages. It sounded as if it was getting the signal from the computer, but nothing would print. Rather than buy new cartridges, which would have cost more than a new printer, I bought a Dell 720. Now, the color prints fine, but I cannot get the black to print. The cartridges are just about full with only a small amount out of the black cartridge.

I read somewhere this week that it has something to do with the software. I believe there was a work-around, but for the life of me I can't remember where I saw it and I didn't bookmark the page! My other computer is WinXP, but I didn't like XP and the fact that I got hosed on the deal with only 128 RAM - never could track down the guy who sold it to me..Figures. Anyway, I now have a computer with WIN2K. I don't have the software for the Dell printer, but I downloaded the drivers from the Dell site. I do have the software for the Lexmark.

Lately, it seems I've seen Dell and Lexmark being spoken of in the same sentence - are they connected?? A LEXPPS.exe, which is Lexmark corporation, is "listening" according to my Comodo, leading me to believe that Dell and Lexmark have a lot to do with each other.

I'm sure this sounds quite like rambling on my part, but this little problem is driving me crazy right now, and while not really a newbie, I'... Read more

IE 11 (11.0.9600.18617) crashed whenever the print button in the print dialog is clicked when printing reports of Crystal Reports. Crystal Reports ActiveX control is ?Crystal Reports Print Control 14.0 version Tested on 5 Windows 7 workstations,
2 having the same problem, 3 others no problems. The crystal reports print control and IE 11 versions are the same for all these workstations. The Windows patch levels are the same for all these computers. Application event log shows event id 1000: Faulting
application IEXPLORE.EXE, version 11.0.9600.18616, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.1.7601.24094, exception code: 0xc0000374, fault offset: 0x000ce9fb, faulting process id: 0x972a0.

I had tried replacing the printcontrol.dll from another working computer, it didn't help.
I had tried uninstall and re-install IE 11, it didn't help.
I had tried re-register printcontrol.dll, it didn't help.
The problem is the same regardless who login to Windows.
The problem is the same regardless if IE is run with elevated privilege or not.
If IE is started with no add-on the print dialog won't appear when Crystal Reports call for printing, it will shows please wait while the Crystal Reports Print Control is loaded, and stay there forever.

Any help is appreciated.

A:Printer not on print manager list but can print to it from aps

Hello and welcome Stacey now just what have you tried?? It sounds like a driver issue to me but unless we have some definite specs on the equipment not much we can do.
See this System Info - See Your System Specs

One item in particular is what is the printer make and model.

I recently bought a new Dell PC with Vista and Word 2007, along with a Dell AIO 926 printer. I have full page documents that I made on my old PC with Word 2002 that printed perfectly with my Epson C66 which finally quit working, and in a roundabout way led to my new purchases. After moving the saved documents to my new PC I find that I cannot print the pages that include text at the lower protion of the page without losing some of the text at the bottom. These pages are constructed in such a way so that I cannot change the format without a complete redo of the project. Is it Word 2007 or is it the printer? The message I get from Word is "The margins are set outside the printable area of the page."
There must be a way to print these docs out "full page". Can anyone help with this one.

I am not a script writer. In fact, the last time I wrote a script it was by creating a .bat file to run on an old MS-DOS 5 machine. But I sure would appreciate help with instructions on setting up a printer script for the printers on my Vista home network.

I have four PC's, 3-Inkjets and 1-Laser printer on my network. To keep the inkjet ink cartridges from drying up from non-use, I'd like to setup a routine on one of the Vista PC's to automatically issue a "Print Test Page" command to each of the inkjet printers once every week. Can this be done, and if so, how?

Thanks in advance for your assiatance...

A:Help Creating Vista "Print Test Page" Script

Either I posted this at the wrong website/forum, or perhaps what I am trying to do cannot be done in Vista. Would appreciate some direction from an administrator or one of you scripting experts, please.

After selecting "Print" from the "File" menu, the print window that comes up is grayed out. What would cause this and how can it be returned to normal? BTW, this is a new system that just went out on the floor to a user. The print menu in other apps seems to be fine.

I'm sure it's something relatively simple and I'm just missing it. I think my brain has started the weekend early.
