[SOLVED] 'Missing file' icon instead of shortcut icon

Q: [SOLVED] 'Missing file' icon instead of shortcut icon

The shortcut icons for my desktop icons are all missing and have been for about a year. I foolishly must have installed something at some point that removed the shortcut icons. I just started searching for results only to find a solution on this forum.

The problem is that the information that I need is in closed threads that no longer have the attachments that I would need to solve this issue.

The following link was the article that I found that had the correct info that I needed.

[SOLVED] Icons on desktop have 'missing file icon' instead of shortcut arrow?

If someone could please help me out with this issue (even though it has already been covered) I would be very thankful.

Preferred Solution: [SOLVED] 'Missing file' icon instead of shortcut icon

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, a while ago, I was annoyed with having the little shortcut arrows on desktop icons. I decided to try to find a way to have them removed, so there would be no arrows for shortcuts, and I looked on the internet for how to do so.

1. One site had me download a registry edit thing, and change my registry.
2. Another site let me download a program that would supposedly remove the shortcut arrows.

And, for a while, one of these methods worked, and I didn't have any arrows on my icons! But then, for some reason, it backfired, and now I have that strange 'unknown program' icon in place of an arrow. Here, http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...s/Untitled.jpg
(It's a safe image, don't worry)

The problem is, I really don't know which of the two things above made this happen, but I can't get it back. What can I do? I'd be fine with or without the arrows, but just not how it is now!

This happened over a year ago, I do not remember the names of the programs, what I did with the registry, and I cannot use system restore that far. Please help with any solution. I have Windows 7.

A:[SOLVED] Icons on desktop have 'missing file icon' instead of shortcut arrow?

Well, the first thing I am going to ask is if you backed up your registry (You never should make changes to the registry - especially if its a never heard of online tweak - without backing it up) That's the short fix, if you did not back up your registry then please bare with me.

Please test the following:
-Double click "My Computer"
-Go into your C:// drive
-Enter the "Program Files" folder
-Go into any folder containing an installed program, and right click on the exe file inside
-"Create Shortcut"

If a shortcut is created within the folder without that ugly missing file icon, then you can just simply go and do that with all your other programs, drag the shortcuts to your desktop, and delete the previous shortcuts. (Then you can rename them something more straightforward, instead of shortcut to so and so just so and so)

If that did not work, I would try a registry cleaner. CCleaner is free and has a basic registry optimizer built in, though you could try a more specific program, such as a RegSeeker.

If none of those work, then please get back to me on it. (I'll probably have thought of another fix by then)

By the way, now that you mentioned those shortcut arrows, I'm getting annoyed at the ones on my desktop!

Hello,

All of a sudden the images on the icon of some of the programs disappeared.
The programs that I ran before it happened were Glary Utilities and AusLogics Disk Defrag.

It is similar on some of the icons on 'Start Menu > All Programs' as well.

Please see the attached screen shot.

A:[SOLVED] Shortcut Icon Image Missing

i -

The "missing shortcut" actually appears to be a lost file association for Adobe Reader.

I would suggest that you perform a system restore, choose a restore point prior to running Glary util - and I would advise not to run it again -
START | rstrui

If that fails - re-install Adobe Reader 9 - http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Hey, I've been coming to this forum for a while now since I set up my Windows 7 system, the tutorials here are fantastic, and have helped me customized Windows 7 just the way I want it!

except just after the last couple of days, I noticed that a few of the icons in the start menu were missing, and replaced with what looks like an Adobe Illustrator file icon, and when I open the program, it also shows the Illustrator icon on the task bar :S

I was just wondering if any of you might know what would cause something like this, and I greatly appreciate any help that is given

I'll attach a photo to show you exactly what I mean:

All my shortcut icons (the little arrows) are missing. They have been replaced be black boxes. It doesn't seem to have any effect on my computer, but I don't know how to get rid of the boxes. I've run multiple virus scans, all negative.

I am running Vista ultimate.

There are no unusal processes running. Anyone know?

Have you used a registry cleaner or tweaker to remove the arrows?

A virus scan is not likely to catch more then a small number of bad guys you may have. Be sure to use 2 or more anti-malware scanners, too.

Try the attached reg file (explorer will need to be restarted for any effect).

I tried the change icon in the properties, but there is no icon displayed in win7. I tried to remove the icon cache as mentioned in other threads here, but couldn't fix the problem. I tried this on both x64 and x32 system, still the same problem. I tried to use icon extractor software and it said no icon found from both exe and shortcut when running in win7.

What is the best way to....
- Make a file that users can download which has a custom icon and takes them to the website of my choice?

Currently,
I have a shortcut on my desktop that points to a website of which I have assigned a custom icon (.ico file) and everything looks and works great on my computer. The customer icon is not a Windows default .ico file

I save the file to SharePoint 2010 and when users download the file (shortcut.url) they don't get the custom icon, just a shortcut with a missing icon image.

A:Download Shortcut.url File = Lose the Custom Icon for It?

Hello Poagman, and welcome to Seven Forums.

That's normal for a referenced custom icon on your PC to not be included with the shortcut like this.

About all you can do is to also include the icon with the shortcut so that they can save the icon where they like on their PC, then change the shortcut's icon to target the icon's location on their PC.

Hope this helps some,
Shawn

Hi all,

Since many years we are using custom BMP files as icon for one of our programs. That has always worked correctly, until Windows 8 (and Windows Server 2012) came. When we create the shortcut on our desktop and we browse to the network location where the BMP
file is and we click ok, we see the icon correctly in the "preview", but as soon as I click OK twice and I go back to the desktop, the shortcut is white, with no icon.

But when I place the BMP file on the local drive and I browse to it, it displays correctly in the previewer AND on the desktop.
This behaviour occurs on both Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. Who knows how to resolve this?

I'm posting this question for my brother who is a computer-noob.
Somehow his laptop running XP seems to have been infected by a virus, although Norman AV does not find a virus.
Problem: everytime he doubleclicks on an icon this seems to be interpreted as a delete command. He gets a question "Do you really want to move this file/shortcut to the recycle bin" Answering No does not close the window. This also happens when he opens outlook (via mouse-menu open option) on downloades messages, double click within outlook on a message deletes the message instead of opening it.
Does anybody know a virus that can cause this behaviour?

Open Windows Explorer and right click on an HTML file. Look for the option "open with". You might have to hold down the shift key while right clicking to bring up that option. Associate the HTML file with Firefox and it should show the correct icon.

I was playing an online game today and, upon exiting the game and returning to my desktop, I found that all of my icons were missing. After running Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, and making sure I had all of the Windows updates, I restarted my computer. All of my icons returned except for my standard file folder icon. In it's place, it just shows the generic "I don't know what kind of file this is" icon instead. I'm not sure what happened, and I can't figure out how to fix it, so I come to you all for assistance.

Thanks very much in advance for your time and support!

A:[SOLVED] Folder Icon Missing?

Should your icons go AWOL again, be sure and right-click on the desktop, then Arrange Icons By, then click "Show Desktop Icons". May want to do that twice and see if your icons correct themselves. Otherwise that's usually related to RAM and Windows caching the wrong icons in the wrong place. I've personally never found a good consistent fix for it and will defer on that to the other experts.

I've never seen anything like it... My icon labels are still on the desktop, but there are no icon images. The quick launch tray is also missing icons as are all folders that I browse - though they are only missing some of the images. When this first happened, there were no images at all in browsed folders. Now there are 40% correct icons and the rest are generic un-associated icons. Also, the quick launch tray has little squares that pop up when I mouse over where the icons used to be - like placeholders.

What led up to this was a hard drive (semi) crash - ... "could not read from boot drive" though my bios acknowleged that the drive existed. I reinstalled WIN2K and everything came back but the icons.

Also the more common problem with Windows Installer coming up trying to install random programs started and explorer dumps out when I try to search or anything a little challenging for W2K...

The Icons exist, but there are no images... Can someone point me to the source for these so I can perhaps find the zapped file? I thought it was shell32.dll, but that is still there - maybe it is bad?

TIA Scapegoat...

I really dislike the new shortcut icon in Windows Vista. So my question is can I change it back or just plain remove it? Well I?ve searched it and the only way it seemed to be possible is by downloading a program. So my new question is, can I change the shortcut icon or get rid of it without having to install any programs? I?m fine downloading a program to change it but I just want to know if I can do it myself first.

Thanks,
Josh

A:Shortcut Icon

Hi Josh,

The easiest way to remove the shortcut arrow and Shortcut name from a short icon is to use the free download program.

Shortcut Arrow

If you just wanted to remove Shortcut from the name everytime a shorcut is created, then this will show you how to do it from within Vista.

Shortcut Prefix

Hope this helps,
Shawn

When I plug an ethernet cable into the port integrated into my laptop, the icon doesn't show up in the Network and Sharing Center, nor when the cable is unplugged. I have also looked in the Device Manager and haven't seen it there either.
