X230 does not power on in Africa

Q: X230 does not power on in Africa

Hello Experts, I have a X230 which has been serving me reliably during my African travels. Sometimes it lost power suddenly, but it was manageable.Since last week, however, it doesn't power on. Actually sometimes it does, a hard reset (pressing the power button for 30sec without the battery) helped a few times, but inconsistently. The notebook loses power in sleeping mode and I cannot turn it on, nor can I charge the battery: the LEDs don't even blink. When I am lucky, it will turn on another day and I can use it as long as it is awake. When I am unlucky I just keep pressing the power button with no results. Updating the BIOS also did not help. Since the notebook still has a warranty for 38 days, I took it to Lenovo Service Center in Lusaka, Zambia. They attributed the problem to faulty fan and overheating. Cleaned the fan but that didn't help. Unfortunately my situation does not allow me to wait two weeks for a new fan, also I am not certain it would help me turning the notebook on. I am now travelling to Malawi and Tanzania. I would very much appreciate an advice if it is possible to fix it, I have a small toolkit with me. If there's no other option than another service center, please advise whether it is possible to pre-order parts to another country. Please also let me know if you happen to now a magician/technician in these countries who could fix the issue. Many thanks in advance for your advice and opinion.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

New TP X230, running Win 8 Pro (clean install).I have power options set to "Do Nothing" if the lid is closed, but to put the unit to sleep if I press the Power or Sleep button. (I don't know that the computer has a sleep button, so here I am referring to the power button.)The power button works to turn the unit on, including to wake it from sleep. (So I don't think there is a hardware problem with it.)But with the computer running, if I press the sleep button nothing happens at all, although I have it set to put the computer to sleep. What might be going wrong?  (And is there a sleep button?)

A:Power Button won't put my X230 to Sleep!

Hi, maiki
Yes, there is a sleep button. Depending on the behavior of your Fn keys, then you will either press Fn + F4 or simply F4 to put the machine to sleep. I would try to create a new power plan and have the same settings to see if you can get the proper power button behavior.
Hope it helps,

Hello, I'm experiencing some issues with my ThinkPad x230For quite sometime laptop doesn't go into sleep mode when lid is closed like also after inactivity time.In both situations computer behaves the same, power lamp is slowly flashing and wifi light is still on (on closed lid both battery and "moon" are on), while fans are constantly working without break. It doesn't matter if it's on battery, without it, plugged or without plug.Situation also is dificult when it comes to shutting down, pc doesn't turn off it hangs on state when power button flashes constantly.Restart is also a lottery, sometimes it does, and sometimes it doesn't restart so it becomes difficult to perform updates that require restart.Device manager doesn't show any missing drivers. My laptop is Intel i5-3320M, 16gb RAM, Windows 10 64-bit.I'm terribly sorry if it's some lame post but I tried couple solutions to solve this issue, but none helped... Or maybe I'm just not looking right.

Hi,I got an X230 a few months ago and the power key has stopped working. It doesn't spring back like the other keys and pressing it has no affect. My laptop is under warenty so I plan on contacting the store I bought it in about a repair but I'm wondering is there any way for me to use the laptop in the meantime? Does anyone know a way to turn the laptop on without using the power key?

in the BIOS menu, under power management, you can use the option to switch ON the laptop by just re-attaching the AC adapter.

Hello! All of the sudden my Lenovo stopped turning on. After plugging in the adapter the battery icon at the back flashes green a few times then turns off. Also, around 10-15second after plugging in the adapter power button reacts to me pressing it ( green led light while I press it) but after that time it stops reacting to anything. It won't turn on either. Please, if anyone has any ideas let me know I've also tried all the suggestions posted in other threads

Hi all, This laptop is giving me nightmares at this point. I can't afford a new one at this moment so i come here for input. The issue I am having right now besides the known audio failure is with the power management, spedificaly the throttling that happens while it is on AC. To me, it seems that the Speedstep roles are reversed. It runs on full turbo speed, over 3ghz on battery but it clocks down to 1198mhz according to CPU-Z when it is plugged in. No combination of settings either in the BIOS, Power manager or the Windows power options have any effect, everything is at 100%. The battery is installed at all time and I have tried both 65 watt and 90 watt AC adapters which are both new. BIOS is updated and I have tried both Win 7 and 10, fully updated with a fresh install with newest drivers and programs and numerous BIOS resets with CMOS battery removed. I am suspecting the power jack at this moment but Power manager reports both AC adapters correctly. I appreciate any response if anybody else has faced this issue or anything like it.

Hi, I'm new to the forums, and I tried searching my problem but I couldn't find anything so I decided to post to get some quick help. I had my x230 and never had problem with this for a long time.  Recently I decided to purchase a 9cell battery 44++.  Given the oppurtunity of being in singapore I went around to find a geniune lenovo 44++ battery for my x230. So I got this 44++ with fru 45n1029 put it on my laptop put the ac and boot the machine.  Then I went to the power manager and notice that it still says 45n1023  tried to reinstall my power manager but still says the same 45n1023. I wanted to know if there something wrong or how to I make power manager recognize my new battery? Is my battery geniune?  I'm attaching an image below of the new battery I hope someone can shed some light about my concern.  http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc158/sceptile_ray/Computer%20parts/20140623_203911.jpg and here is the information about the battery that power management shows:

A:X230 power manager battery always 45n1023

Hi,The Power Manager settings as well as the battery parameters are stored in the registry. So if PM could be removed at all (!) those parameters should be reset. But I hope it's not a single solution.I'm not sure will it help or no, but you might perform the following steps:- PM menu (mouse right click on the battery icon), "Remove and Replace Battery" item,- battery reset. Also let me give you another advice: change the battery charge thresholds for its healthy and lifespan, do not charge it fully.

I saw few people have problem with this, It was **bleep** hard for me to find what was wrong with my laptop, It just lost its power (instant power-off) from time to time, It was like that for like a half a year, I couldn't figure what was wrong with it. It was totally clean inside and wasn't overheating ,ran all the tests- all was fine, battery also was fine, so is power supply and power module. The thing that fixed it- Was Changing CPU thermal compound, it had dried out really bad and was causing this gremlin.. Even though I didn't believe that it could be the problem because it didn't had overheating issues. Spent $1 on the compound from ebay and the laptop has been fine for over 2months now.In case anyone has the same problem or comes up when searching this post- that's the thing that will fix it even if it sounds weird.

I have my lenovo x230 laptop set to sleep when I close the lid. When I close the lid the "sleep" icon on the back of the screen lights up. But the batter will not last through the night on sleep mode. Within five hours or so, the battery is completely drained and I have to plug in and boot up the system. I've never seen such poor batter performance during sleep mode on any other laptop I've ever owned.  Another thread in this forum blames the USB port that allows you to charge mobile phones/etc. during low-power states and recommends disabling the "always power on" option fo this USB port in the Bios settings. I've done so, be it doesn't seem to have helped. At least my laptop still will not make it through the night in sleep mode.  At this point, it seems my ownly option is to use sleep mode only when the laptop is plugged in and hibernation mode when on batter power, which is disappointing. I've never had to worry about this in the past with other laptops.  Perhaps/probably related is the fact that the lenovo ThinkVantage Power Manager (v. 7.16) hangs at the splash screen when I try to open it, so I've been trying to manage the power through the windows control panel power settings.

Hi; I work for an NGO in Madagascar and we are going to create ICT telecenters in Madagascar. I am looking for any type of advice that might help guide us in choosing hardware. If anyone has any experience working with computers in developing countries, I would appreciate any guidance one may offer. Otherwise, do desktops fair better than laptops in terms of durability? If so, why? Does anyone have any experience using netbooks, and if so, how do you like them? Any advice for routers or other switches?

We are looking for durable computers that fair well in less than perfect conditions. These will not be sitting in an air controlled office.

Secondly, we're also seeking advice on printers, scanners, copiers and faxes. I have found a number of models from HP that perform all four of these functions. Can anyone offer any advice on selecting those models? We are also in the market for a video projector.

Please, of anyone has any advice they can offer, please do not refrain. The more information I can gather about hardware, the better. Please feel free to send me and e-mail as well.

Thanks for your time.

I have an X230 i5 processor with a 1 TB SSD and I recently picked up a X230 with a i7 processor and a much smaller hard disk.  Can I just swap my big SSD into the new X230 (moving that version of Windows 7 Pro) and then install the smaller hard disk (with its version of Windows 7 Pro) into the i5 machine. (Will be swapping the memory so the i7 has the 16 GB and the i5 has 8 GB).  I know that if they were completely different computers this would not work, but since both are X230 will it work?  I'd rather not have to restall all the programs if I can avoid it!

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place for this thread, but it does have to do with security on the internet.

I just opened my phone bill and came close to an anxiety attack. I had a charge to Gui Bissau for over $200. I had to look it up and find out it was in Africa. The call was made while all the children were at school and my husband and I were at work. This happened during the time I first registered here because of computer problems--and flrman helped fix it. Unfortunately, it was about 3 and 1/2 hours before the computer was fixed.

I now have a firewall up and running and hopefully this won't happen again. Needless to say, the phone companies were called. My local carrier wouldn't help-but the long distance company that charged me for the phone call gave me a credit.
(Thank you God for that blessing!)

So my question to the computer techs-can anything extra be done to stop connections like this? I told my local company I want an international block on phones calls-but they said it would stop all long distance calls. However, the other company said they could block international calls. Why can one and not the other?

I also just wanted to let other internet users TO BEWARE!

Hi All

I am trying to find some help or whatever about using Google Earth for South Africa. I don't seem to be able to zoom in at close distance without distortion and nothing "close" is in focus at all. Having looked at the US site, it is obvious that close detailed focus and "street level" is obtainable.

GE, UK is also lacking in zoomed focus. Is it that GE hasn't developed South Africa in detail yet - such as it has for the States.

"Bird's Eye View" is excellent - but I would so love to find out if South Africa will ever have the same detail as the US.

Is there perhaps a forum or site that can shed some light on this??

Many thanks

Hello, hopefully someone can help with this, since the issue persists. I am using the USB 3.0 Ultradock, but the 3.0 docks on the x230 are not working properly. Do I need to delete the generic USB 2.0 hubs?  As a sysadmin, I know better, but I am so incredibly angry that Lenovo can't address such a simple issue that I'm willing to try anything at this point.  Next step, of course, is to find a bloatware-free laptop that doesn't require 3 different update wizards (Windows, Lenovo, OEM) to operate, but since it's 2017 that may well be impossible so I'd better solve this problem (again) while I'm searching. My x230 is using the default Windows drivers (dated 2006) and the generic USB 2.1 hub.

What I tried:- reinstalling the drivers - Realtek High Definition Audio Driver  v., released 2013. 11. 11- uninstalling dolby- uninstall the Lenovo recommended drivers and installing generic ones from Realtek site (version, released 2015.06.18)Every time the same happens: restart system, I have system sounds then after a few minutes the sound is gone.I mean I understand if I have no sound from start, it must be a hw problem or something, but how can something work for a while and be gone after? many thanks.

Hi everyone, I have a question about the RAM in the x230. I bought the base 4gb of RAM with the intention of upgrading it myself later. The stock RAM inside is a Samsung model with this serial: m471b5273dh0-cko However, I cannot find this model RAM to put in another identical stick into the open slot. The closest model available is: http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MV-3T4G3/US Do you think these two sticks would be compatible? Did anyone else try a different type/model/amount of RAM? My gut feeling is that 8Gb of RAM would be great, and that 16Gb would be overkill. The other option is just to shell out a few more bucks and buy two pieces of matching RAM. I am considering Cruicals and Cosair Vengence RAM. Let me know what you guys think, Thanks, Jah

hi. if you were to order from Lenovo: http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?...you'd probably get Samsung, Hynix or Nanya, from my experience. most recently, i got Hynix. price may be higher than other places, though. from what i've read, Crucial is good quality, but Corsair may be hit or miss. cheers.

Would adding an SSD to my 4 year old X230 improve performance, or is the BIOS/Motherboard not new enough to make it worth while?

Hello,I recently by a Lenovo X230 from local dealer , but unfortunately with comutrace activated. I have concern that this canbe hacked and used for cyber atack or to obtain my personal data. I would like to disable this option , without need to install any custom BIOS. This is a  potential hacker targets because this computrace mechanism was already demonstrated to be vulnerable to attack. Thanks in advance

A:X230 Computrace

I am assuming the laptop is not flagged as stolen.  You can contact Absolute Software by email and ask that you want the machine "flagged for delete in their database" and the Computrace agent removed.  They will require some sort of receipt from when you bought it from the previous owner.  They also want the model and serial from the sticker on the back, plus, most important, the system board serial which you can get from the BIOS screen.  The systemboard serial is the key into their database.  They will then contact their registered owner and ask him if he or she will release the machine.  They will not remove the agent unless their registered owner agrees, even if the registered owner no longer is paying the license fee.

Hi all.I have read around a bit and don't personally see any reason neither of these should work, but I've read some reports of people having issues with the Corsair not working and having to return it and the second pair not working. Then the HyperX for some reason mentions all the chips sets around the QM77 which is used in the X230 but not the QM77 itself, which again puts doubt in my mind. Can you confirm if either or both of these RAM kits (2x8GB) would be suitable?http://www.ebuyer.com/370065-corsair-16gb-ddr3-1600mhz-vengeance-laptop-memory-cmsx16gx3m2a1600c10http://www.ebuyer.com/646128-16gb-1600mhz-ddr3l-cl9-sodimm-kit-of-2-1-35v-hyperx-impact-black-hx316l...In case links get blocked because I'm a new user they were:Corsair 16GB DDR3 1600MHz Vengeance Laptop Memory{Kingston} 16GB 1600MHz DDR3L CL9 SODIMM (Kit of 2) 1.35V HyperX Impact Black

Is the X230 actually using the QM77 or the HM77 chipset? Today I have seen websites claiming both. HM77 is listed as good for teh HyperX RAM whereas for some reason the QM77 isn't...

This test is done from userbenchmark.com. Other benchmark programs give similar results. I am also not happy with the way the drive performs. I have no idea why it performs so badly. Anyone got any idea?
