Windows 8.1 hard drive loss of GB's due to Windows Update & Windows Defender Definitions

Q: Windows 8.1 hard drive loss of GB's due to Windows Update & Windows Defender Definitions

I have a embedded Windows 8.1 with media center operating system, capable of (refresh) and (reset) the hard drive.
I slowly saw how my hard drive was losing GB's over a period of time, with no-downloading other than Windows Update & Windows Defender definitions. A loss of 32 GB's is recorded during this time period as of today's date.
Question: Which option is best to recover loss of GB's over a period of time, due to Windows Updates & Windows Defender definitions? The refresh option or the reset option.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have Windows Defender definitions failing to update. All other updated are getting installed well. Updating Windows Defender defuinitions via Windows Defender inteface works as well.

I think it's because I disabled auto update because I'd heard of Windows 10 handling that in an incredibly aggressive way, but is there some middle ground where Windows Defender can auto update and the actual important updates manually notify me for download?

Sorry, searched but couldnt find anything

Hi All,Today I did a clean installation of Windows 8 and went straight to Windows Update to download all the updates. In total there were 116 to download, 115 for windows and 1 for Windows Defender. In windows Update history afterwards all were listed as succeeeded (installed correctly) except the Windows Defender definition which was listed as failed. The error code details shown for it was 80070666..but there was no information on what the code meant. The update was Windows Defender KB2267602 1.191.2648.0.To configure all the above updates obviously required a restart. After the restart Windows made no attempt to redownload the problematic Windows Defender Update. But a newer version KB2267602 1.191.2651.0. was listed along with 4 more Windows Updates so those were all downloaded and installed correctly including the newer Windows Defender definition. In Windows Update history all listed as succeeded. I checked the history again and the problematic Defender Update listed above (Windows Defender KB2267602 1.191.2648.0.) was still there showing as failed. Since then another 2 Window Defender definitions KB2267602 1.191.2655.0 and KB2267602 1.191.2687.0 have both been download and successfully installed.1.Has anybody any idea what might have happened here? Has the failed Windows Defender definition KB2267602 1.191.2648.0 been installed or not?2.Would an SFC Scannow have shown errors if there was a problem? I tried to run Windows Defender Offline 64 bit on a friend's laptop using WDO installed on a USB stick, but it refused to scan the disk because it insisted on getting Updates to its definitions before scanning.

So either the definitions on the USB stick were too old or not present at all or WDO couldn't find them. I had not run WDO from that USB stick before.

But the laptop had just a Wi-Fi connection and WDO doesn't work over Wi-Fi.

I have successfully used the 32 bit WDO USB stick on my own Desktop without such a problem, probably because my Desktop is connected to the Internet via a LAN.

I checked another thread on this subject on SevenForums, here:

Defender Offline on DVD failed because no internet connection

I disagree with the statement by karlsnooks that WDO does not need an Internet connection. This was confirmed here:

defender offline cannot update no internet connection - Microsoft Community

However, if someone knows how to manually download the virus definitions and copy them to a USB stick, I would be very interested.

I suppose I could download and create another WDO ISO file on my hard drive and see what's in it, try to identify the definitions and update the equivalent files on the USB stick... but that would be very much trial and error. If someone has actually done it, please let me know.

I have been using my laptop with Windows Defender for a while and have updated it's definition archive everytime it tells me too.

I thought that I should probably switch to a new anti-virus to help with performance.
So I installed Bitdefender's Antivirus Free Edition.

However, now there are definitions from previous updates of Windows Defender cluttering my Hard Drive.
Is there a simple and safe way to delete them?

Hi everyone!

Well, as the title states, I'm not receiving Windows Defender definitions through Windows Update anymore...

Until last friday, on my Windows 7 Pro x64 notebook, at every scan on tuesdays and fridays, Windows Defender had it's definitions updated via Windows Update, as "KB915597". Earlier today when I checked for updates, nothing was found, except for the MS Removal Tool from November and November's Security Quality Rollup.

Using Windows Defender to search for updates shows no errors, it apparently completes the scan, and says there are not updates available, even though MS site (here: Access Denied ) states there are definitions created today (Nov 8th).

Is anyone facing the same issue, or my PC is screwed somehow?

I am using Windows 8 not 8.1

A few days ago I shut down my computer. I didn't notice that it never actually turned off like usual until the next day. I had to hold the power button to turn it off. It started back up that day without any apparent issues and Windows Updates and Defender definitions were being downloaded and installed normally. I am not sure if that is relevant but I wanted to include all info I could think of.

The following day Windows Update brought up an error when trying to download the newest definitions (I have WU set to check but notify me before automatically installing which is why I manually install Defender definitions via WU daily). The WU error code is listed as 80070002 but event viewer shows it as 0x80070643. WU appears to be able to search and find the latest definitions, as the version numbers have changed over time, and completes downloading them but gets the error when trying to install them.

Trying to manually install them via the Defender program does the same but just says it fails due to connection issues (no other connection issues are present). I can manually download the 100 MB+ file direct from Microsoft and update them that way without issue.

Things I have tried to troubleshoot.

- System restore to a date about a week before this problem occurred. No change in being able to download Defender definitions via WU or Defender itself. WU did find the IE Flash update from the 26th and was able to install that with no problem... Read more

I tried to updating to the latest Windows Defender definitions on our workstations, the first attempt failed and it succeeded on the second try. After installation went through our users noticed a randomly named folder in the root of their disk drives,
some had it in their c:\ others in other drives they had mounted (ie d:\ e:\ f:\). The folder can only be accessed with administrator privileges and inside the folder there's a randomly named mpasbase.vdm file. What could be the cause of
this and why isn't creating the folder in the OS partition but randomly choosing any disk that is mounted?

Win7 Home Premium and HP Pavillion DV6-2150US. Hard drive failed. I purchased a Seagate 500gb replacement (original drive was 250gb) and used my purchased HP re-install DVD's to re-build Windows and re-install the OEM software on the new hard drive. Everything boots fine but it will not process Windows updates (.e. there is a big red X on the windows update screen). I have tried the Microsoft "Mr Fix it" download ---but it errors out and none of the other Microsoft suggestions work either. When I was lucky enough to speak with a MS tech support person, she suggested that somehow the windows on the new hard drive may not be genuine, etc... Even though windows on the new hard drive states that its activated and genuine...is there some sort of check to a hard drive serial number to "really" activate windows? Just to ensure that my re-install was not corrupted, I erased the new hard drive and started all over....I have the same exact result...it boots fine, but will not update via windows updates. The only other change to the laptop was that I had best buy double the memory to 8 from 4 when I purchased it 2 years ago...again, not sure if there is some sort of hardware change limitation prior to invalidating the windows software. Please help! I am truly stuck. Thx JimmyC

A:Windows 7 Windows update won't work after hard drive replace...

Thanks for your post...I solved my problem by installing the update Intel rapid storage driver per this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02219204 I guess as long as the hard drive is less than 250Gig you don't need the new driver. But when I replaced my failed hard drive with a 500gig hard drive--when I did the HP restore of Win7 and the OEM software from the dvd's I purchased--it put the original storage driver back into Win7---which works fine with a 250 gig drive but causes windows update to not work for drives greater than 250gig. When I installed the driver file from the above link, Windows update started working--and you can imagine there were many, many patches since my PC was now restored to original Win7---not even Win 7 SP1. Hopefully this will help someone else...thank you for your post. JimmyC

Error 80070714 when trying to update windows defenders definitions

This stops your security essentials from updating and then cause's it to stop altogether leaving your computer unprotected.

When you try to update you will receive this Error message (Error 80070714) or it will refuse to update as mine did because your computer recognizes the update as a virus.

This is a common problem but don't worry it is repairable, it is caused by a corrupted file being downloaded through Windows Update, not sure what Microsoft is doing about this as it is caused by there update software, but it is easily repaired by restoring your computer to a date before your last update.

It can also be caused by government systems hackers, shutting down your computer protection so be aware, your PC is not private as long as your online.

Hi. This is my first time on a forum so go easy on me please?! I had trouble earlier this week after I deleted files that were scattered all over the ahrd drive with no real place.
I assume that this has caused my problem. After that, I could not use Internet explorer 7.
Any pages I tried to view led me off to advertisements. When I tried to go to windows update, it simply refreshed to the homepage (google) even though the address bar had windowsupdate.com in it.
Slowly the computer started to malfunction completely. First IE7 did not start at all saying something about could not read memory, then I could not start the computer at all at one stage.
Somehow over the week I got system restore to get the computer on, and everything is working well now.
The only thing that does not work is updating Trend INternet security, spyware doctor, windows update.
With the Trend, it says "an error prevented your security software from connecting to the internet. Make sure your connection works before trying again. If problem persists, wait one hour before making another attempt to update protection."
Spyware doctor says update failed. Please try again later.
Windows update just leads me to google homepage.
So I'm thinking that something is stopping it, but after one week of trying, I can't get it going. I've checked other threads, but nothing seems to fit the bill. Please help.

A:Windows Defender ATP Windows 10 Fall Creators Update now open for public preview

As usual, Microsoft makes an announcement that does not include a lot of pertinent details that will result in mass confusion.

This is for Windows Enterprise and Education only; it will not be shipped with Windows Home and Pro versions.

In fact, Windows Defender ATP is not included with Enterprise and Education by default. ATP requires the purchase of a subscription.

Pay attention to Microsoft's caveat:

Another machine with issues. Booted to safe mode and install malwarebytes. Removed 3 pup programs (including coupon clipper and rocket mp3 - tried to use windows uninstall to remove some of them after malwarebytes cleaned up) (over 100 files were cleaned up). Booted in normal mode. Windows update did not update for about a week. Trend Micro firewall/av not updating. Noticed windows defender message in logs (not starting). Updated mailwarebytes and reran - came up clean. Had to reinstall Trend Micro so updates would work. Ran trend micro scan - Nothing found. Ran malwarebytes rootkit checker - nothing. tried to run windows update. Not all updates worked (especially windows defender update). Tried to get windows defender to work - Failed. Ran windows update - Noticed 1 update for office 2010 not working - hid the update. Ran it again - found 5 updates. 1 installed but the others failed. Rebooted machine. Windows update stated that windows was updated. ---WRONG BEHAVIOR Those 4 updates should still be there-- Suspect some kind of virus but none seem to be obvious--. FRST64 logs included DDS logs included Malware files included Summary.nfo file included. Please advice.

I have been getting these error codes every time i try to update windows
software. I have googled extensively on this problem and followed guides, but
its still giving me error codes. I am NOT using a proxy or anything like
that. This error poped up after I uninstalled kaspersky from my computer I
believe. I am running Vista 32bit SP1 (SP1 because i still havent been able
to update). I have tried using Microsoft's update links, but they are broken
because they just return me to google. Please help someone! I need to get
this fixed before tomorrow because of that new virus.

About a month ago, I used the built-in Windows 10 recovery method to reinstall Windows 10. I still had a few glitches from my original Windows 7 installation, and these have been resolved by the reinstall.

One thing I've noticed, however, is that I'm getting an error message whenever I try to install the definition update for Windows Defender:

Definitie-update voor Windows Defender - KB2267602 (definitie 1.215.1024.0) - Fout 0x80070643

I already tried sfc /scannow, and it didn't find anything that required fixing. I also tried MicrosoftFixit.msi and NetFxRepairTool.exe, because Googling the error message brought me the news that it was related to the .NET framework.

To be clear: I don't use Windows Defender right now. I got Norton Security installed and it serves me well. I know some people consider it a resource hog, but I've tried Avira as a recommendation by Tom's Guide and it was even worse. My Norton still lasts over 200 days so I have plenty of time if I want to replace it by then. However, I do want Windows to be fully updated, and not having that update finished just stands out like a red ship in a sea of white.

I've considered that this error might be because of Norton, but I didn't have issues before resetting Windows, so I don't see why it would be Norton that suddenly throws a fit about it.

How do I fix this?

I am having trouble with Windows Defender and Update. I am getting error 0x800705b4 for Defender and though I've searched online on how to fix the problem none of them seem to work. Also, my computer won't let me access the update & security portion of my settings. When I click on it the window closes immediately.

A:Can't turn on Windows Defender and cannot open windows update window

RE : I am having trouble with Windows Defender and Update. I am getting error 0x800705b4
That error code usually happens, but not necessarily always because of that, when you have a 3rd party anti-virus program installed, such as Avast, AVG, Norton and McAfee. Those programs mentioned have their own defender and having 2 defenders running in the same computer will create conflicts, not to mention redundancy. Therefore, those programs will shut down Windows Defender.

Please disregard the suggestion posted below. I misunderstood your question.

Windows security center and Defender can't be started, I've tried the methods that I have found here and In the web but nothing seems to work. Malwarebytes once detected somespyware that was removed, and hasn't caught anything ever since. Windows update donwloaded and installed something but then it stopped.

Around the time the problem started TrendMicro Worry Free pack asked for activation and the window stuck, it's was able to click but activation button didn't send me anywhere. This software came with the computer and it has been uninstalled.

Could it be a registry problem instead of a virus?.

I run Windows 7 Professional and last Tuesday when there was Windows Update was when things started to go odd. First the anti-virus and Windows Defender kept shutting off because the updates were installing, but one of the updates couldn't install. So it would try again a few hours later. I finally rebooted thinking that would make the update take place. When rebooting it said it was doing the updates and after that it would reboot (was on the shut down screen). When I booted back up later there was still one update that needed to be installed (an important one it said) but when I tried to install it it had trouble and said the update failed. I also noticed that my downloads in my browsers were not working (it would remove the download as soon as it finished .. tried with 3 browsers but it seems unrelated as others are having this issue just recently as well). I rebooted again last night thinking it might update then but this time it didn't. I booted the computer after I had it off all last night and that one update still needs to update and the anti-virus now can't be found and Window Defender was not enabled but I reenabled it and that is running. The problem is I can't just download an anti-virus and install it as my browser still won't download. So now I am typing this without any anti-virus contemplating going to the store to buy ESET or Bit Defender or something. I was using Windows Security Essentials (that is why it could possibly be related to the... Read more

Windows Vista Home Premium x86 (32Bit) Service Pack 2

Everytime I restart Vista I get the follow Error:
Also, Search Engines Redirect me, and my explorer would freeze on me. I would also get an error message (Windows Host Services have stopped working) but it went away.
I tried running RKILL and an immediate bluescreen pops up: DRIVERS_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I tried fixing some things on my own, but now I am stumped.
I had mcafee, but switched to kaspersky since the issue. Everytime I scan, right before I would update the scanners.

I use Malwarebytes and Kaspersky along with CCleaner. And I use TuneUp to speed up my PC.
Nothing has been found.

This problem started with Windows 7 (On Drive E:\). I tried updating iTunes to 10.2.2 and a security message popped asking me allow or deny. I choose allow out of habit before I could process it did not say apple but some random letters and number followed by (.exe).

My computer froze and ever since my Windows 7 would not boot, and when I try to load it in Safe mode, only 3 drivers load (too fast to read them) and it immediately goes to startup repair-which of course, fails.

Now Vista (On Drive C:\)....well, it's Vista lol. My windows defender error when trying to update - (0x8007043c) and windows update error - (80072EFE). I believe it is a rootkit error or something with SVCHOST.exe but not entirely sure.

Please help me, thanks.

Hi, I am a first time poster so my apologies if i leave out any vital information but i'll try to be as complete as possible!

I have a 2 year old HP pavillion dv7 4090eb running windows 7 Home Premium.
I wiped it clean and reinstalled windows using the factory restore thingy.

Processor -- Intel i7 Q720 @ 1.60Ghz
Ram -- 6GB
Graphics -- ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
HDD -- 750.0 GB - SATA-150 - 5200.0 rpm

What i have done since i restored it:
I removed a bunch of HP bloatware that didn't look like it could do any harm what so ever by uninstalling it (hp mediasmart video, cyberlink labeling, etc...
I installed a few basic programs like chrome, vlc, winrar, etc...

Reason i restored it to factory in the first place:
It used to have heat issues because the fan got clogged up by dust. It was still under warranty so i had it checked out and they replaced the entire cooling assembly. Ever since then my laptop has been cutting out(like pulling the plug from a desktop). It generally happens at crucial moments when i'm asking relativly high processing power and RAM (using matlab or World of Tanks) (15-20%CPU 3-3.5GB RAM). So i pretty much wanted to rule out if it was a software issue or not.. (its not cause it still cuts out randomly)
Note: This isn't related to the laptop overheating since it does it wether its hot or not. (unless they didn't fix a faulty Temp Sensor near the CPU wich i would have no clue on how to figure that out)

A:[SOLVED] Windows Update && Windows Defender issue

You could try this Windows auto fixit (scroll down the page) to repair the Windows Installer How to troubleshoot problems when you install or uninstall programs on a Windows-based computer but I'd be considering re-doing the factory reset and vet a bit more carefully what you are uninstalling in the bloatware.

Not sure if this will resolve your Windows Defender problem Question Defense ? Windows Defender: This operation returned because the timeout period expired. (Error Code: 0x800705b4) but would tend to support re-doing the reset if it has restored with corrupt .dll(s).

However, if you have an install disk that you can boot up with, then these cmds (courtesy of Jenae) should repair the registry if a sfc /scannow doesn't do it - and as always, create a restore point first before making any changes to the registry.

As for the last bit regarding changing the boot order back to HDD first, I have mine to check the DVD and USB drives first so that if I ever need to, then I will be able to boot up with an install disk to run a repair.

Recovery of Corrupt Registry

These instructions apply only to Windows 7

1. Turn on your computer and press F1 or F2 to go into BIOS settings. On "Booting" section set your computer to boot from your cd/dvd drive. Insert the Windows 7 installation CD or DVD (either full or upgrade version) into the drive and save your new settings and exit BIOS mode. When your computer starts again it will ask you to press any key to reboot ... Read more

I am on Windows 8 (original/classic x64 Pro), and since I have now installed all updates, I attempted turning off the Windows Update service, and then tested updating Windows Defender. Voila! It worked.

But if I keep my system in the configuration, will there be an issue running or updating Windows Defender (and would there be a functionality issue for Windows itself in the future)?

Hi everyone,

I am having a problem with my Windows 7 system on my Toshiba laptop. I discovered the problem while trying to download some software that requires the .NET framework 4.0. The framework software would not download.

While researching the error code that resulted from the .NET framework installation failure, I discovered that both Windows Update and Windows Defender are not working on my machine.

I have attempted to work through the instructions in the Windows Update Posting Instructions thread.

1) I have downloaded the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 64 bit, but when I attempt to run it, I get the following error message:

2) I have performed the SFC scan and get a message saying no integrity errors were found, as per the screen shot below:

3)When I attempt to check for updates with Windows Update, I get the following error message saying the service is not running. I have tried restarting the computer as suggested but get the same result:

4) CBS log file is attached.

As a side note (I`m not sure if this is related, maybe it should be in its own thread) when I try to start Windows Defender, I get the following error message:

I have installed the latest Microsoft Security Essentials and I have update all of the device drivers on my computer using the Uniblue DriverScanner application so I should have the latest Intel drivers.

What should I do next to help solve this problem

Hi there,

In June, I bought a new PC running Windows 10 Home. No probs - even the Anniversary Update seemed to go smoothly (when I was expecting trouble!) However, last week, one of the Windows Defender updates wouldn't install. The error message then was something like a problem with "A network or connection problem" . I got it to update that time by closing down Defender and then re-starting my PC. I had to start Defender again and then it installed the update. Now, it hasn't updated since 27th August. The update is :
Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB2267602 (Definition 1.227.991.0) - Error 0x80070643.
It is saying "The virus and Spyware Definitions didn't update on 29.08.16 because of an internet or network connectivity problem" (It said this yesterday as well, on the 28th!)

Now, my internet connection is working excellently and I do not have a network! I tried my previous 'Fix' of closing Defender and re-starting, but that doesn't work now either. I should say that I do not have any other virus or spyware prog installed as I am a very cautious user of the Internet and don't use any 'Dodgy' sites. (I got used to taking a lot of care when online owing to my very prolonged use of Windows XP long after it's sell-by date. In fact, if my old PC hadn't completely given up the ghost in June I'd probably still be using it!)

Anyway, could anyone help please? I have searchd online for this ... Read more
