External Monitor not working suddenly

Q: External Monitor not working suddenly

Hi, first post!

I have an ASUS VW246H, 24 inch external monitor connected to my two laptops, one via HDMI, and another via DVI (viewing one at a time ofcourse).
My new laptop (Dell xps 17) has had the dual display running smoothly until right now (it was running just few hours ago!) and now it doesn't work!!
I plug in the HDMI cable, the monitor detects that something is plugged in, turns black for a sec, and then just displays "HDMI No Signal".

p.s. in the past hour I did boot into my second partition (Ubuntu, Linux) which doesn't have a dual monitor setup but I by accident left the HDMI plugged in. I 'think' I have done that several times before without anything going wrong. Dont know what happened this time!

p.s.s. I have tried to go in monitor settings on windows 7, look at the NVIDIA control panel and it cant find any external monitors. I have also tried toggling Fn + F1 which is the external display switch.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Ok that was odd.. I plugged the laptop into a different HDMI cable, going into my tv, and it worked.
Then I brought it back to my monitor and tried to plug it into the HDMI cable, and it worked!!!!

I unplugged the cable to move my ultrabook, plugged it back in and now the connection with the external monitor is completely dead and won't come back, any chance its something other than the USB C port being broken? It worked fine for 48 hours.

After an automatic windows update my computer (running Windows 8.1 64-bit) suddenly lost connection to my external monitor. I tried connecting to the tv with another cable and it didn't work either.I uninstalled the latest update and it didn't work. I tried doing a system restore to a few days earlier and it didn't work. Then I updated the BIOS and it suddenly started connecting again. The problem is the next day it stopped connecting to the monitor again. This time I couldn't update the BIOS because I already had the latest version. And even if I could I shouldn't be having to do that. What can I do?

Hi,
For the last 5 months, I've been using a Western Digital external hard drive that was given to me by a friend. I don't know exactly what model my hard drive is or where to find that information. Up until yesterday, it had been working flawlessly, but now it seems to have malfunctioned.

Normally, when I plug the USB cable into the computer, the drive ("G:") shows up in "My Computer" within a couple of minutes. Now, however, after plugging in the cable the drive never shows up. I googled for help on this issue, and most of the resources I found told me to look for the drive in the "Device Manager" or in "Computer Management > Disk Management," but it doesn't show up in either of those places, so I'm not sure what I should do. I've tried unplugging it and plugging it back in, and also restarting my computer, but neither of those things helped. I also tried using a different USB cable, and that didn't solve my problem either.

The USB port that I plugged the cable into is functional; both my mouse and my laptop fan work when I plug them into that port. However, when I plug the harddrive into that port, I don't hear the "ding" sound that I usually hear when other devices, like a flash drive, are plugged in. The harddrive also seems to be properly plugged into my power strip, as there the green light on the harddrive is still lit up.

I'm currently using Windows Vista. Any help would b... Read more

A:External hard drive suddenly not working

The external hard drive could be failing, or there could be corruption (partition table etc...) It's possible that data recovery software can recover the files that are currently on the drive. Since the drive can't be detected at all in Windows, that may be your only option.

By the way, it's possible that the drive itself is still intact, but could have corruption of some type causing the drive not to be detected (for example; a corrupt partition table). In that situation, data recovery to backup the data is needed, then a re-format of the drive should return it to proper working condition.

ok, i'll make this short, my friend accidently unplugged my external Western Digital 1TB HDD drive from my laptop while I was using it, as well as knocking out the power cord simultaneously. i dont recall actually using anything on the drive or transferring files to/from at the time this happened. But in any case, i plugged it back in and it just wouldnt let me read from it anymore in Computer. The drive's icon was still there but wouldnt let me open it in either Explorer, Total Commander, or Directory Opus. Explorer froze up several times and i had to kill the process. and a few other apps i started attempted to access something on the drive and froze when they couldnt do so. I then removed the drive when Safe Eject failed to work. after plugging it back in the drive's icon disapeared from Explorer entirely. I also noticed that the driver for the drive disappeared from Device Manager, whereas it was there before.

I have tried plugging it into several other PCs, with varying results. In any case I can sometimes view the folders/files in this situation, and can sometimes open them. But at other times i cant. and even when i can the drive takes an unusually long time to respond.

I have also tried booting into a Live Linux distribution from USB key and then plugging in the drive, and then attempting to copy them over to another external HDD that i also have plugged in. But the drive access is extremely slow and it often freezes up in the middle of trying to copy. This is unusu... Read more

A:External HDD Suddenly Stops Working (Well, Sort Of)...................

Did the drive itself suffer any physical shock during the accident? Did it fall off the table?

Obviously it might be failing, but I could imagine that there was somehow physical damage to the USB cable or socket on the drive's enclosure, possibly even the AC adapter (unlikely if the drive is spinning and getting power just fine).

I'm not sure what to suggest that you haven't tried already, but perhaps a run with TestDisk will shed more light on things: Regain a lost drive using Test Disk - An Illustrated Guide

I have a dual monitor setup which has worked perfectly for months. Never had a problem. Monitor 1 is connected via VGA while Monitor 2 is connected via DVI.

So today I woke up, hopped on my desktop and the second monitor wouldn't display anything. The computer can detect the monitor and I can change it's settings. However, the screen is black. I can move my mouse over to the screen and program still appear there, but I can't see anything. In fact, I had to change the projection type to duplicate screens because my browser loads up on Monitor 2.

Both VGA and DVI cable are both screwed into the desktop and monitors, so it can't be a loose cable. It's plugged into a power source, and the monitor is on and active (power light is green). I just have no idea why it's not displaying anything and it's just a black screen.

I don't think it's my video/graphics card considering it's still be detected even after unplugging the monitor and plugging it back in and because it's still functional apart from the black screen.

Does anyone know how I can get this fixed? I've tried unplugging both monitors, turning them on/off, restarting my desktop and it's still a just a black screen.

Hi,

I have been searching in several forums but have not been able to fully fix this problem. It was fixed temporarily and failed again.
This the system I have:

HP TouchSmart tx2 tablet pc with Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (Home Premium) x 64 bit
AMD Turion (tm) X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile ZM-82, 2.2 GHz
ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics

I have been working for over a year with an external display Dell ST2310 flat screen monitor and working fine with the "use external display only" setting . From one minute to the other both screen went black so I forced a restart and again the same problem. I decided to manually disconnect the external display by unplugging the VGA cable from the laptop which automatically switched back to the main display as it would if I disconnected the display. When I plugged the VGA cable back in again the same issue both screens were fully black. I disconnected once again the VGA cable so I could change the settings in Windows Mobility. I plugged back in the VGA cable after changing the settings from "external display only" to "mirror monitors" and after playing for a bit with the Windows Mobility Center I got the external display to work back again to my regular settings: "external display only". This solution lasted for a day and now the main display works and the external display screen is fully black.

Solutions I have tried unsuccessfully:
- Changed VGA cables, still experiencing the same issue.
- Tested monitor ... Read more

Hi. One moment all was fine - next, no sound... Can anyone please help?

My small external speakers connect via a USB port and an audio jack plugged into the speakers/headphone socket (both needed - I guess the USB connection is just to power them?). After months of no problems, when I connect the jack, there is no sound. The laptop's internal speakers are pathetic, but still work OK when I unplug the speakers again.

If I try the external speakers on a different (Dell) laptop, they work just fine. If I plug headphones into the Asus laptop speakers/headphones jack, the headphones work OK too.

So I am now just confused! My Asus laptop is suddenly OK with the headphones, but not the speakers?? There were no drivers to install by the way for the speakers to work. No problems show in Device Manager and all volume settings are at Max right now...

The laptop has Realtek HD Audio installed (and I run Windows 7 x64). Microsoft 'Fixit' (as recommended elsewhere here) found nothing wrong.

Help appreciated.

Thanks,

Martin

A:External USB Speakers suddenly not working on my Asus laptop

Sounds like a USB port power problem in the laptop. The laptop's sound works OK and the speakers work OK on a different PC.

As they are USB powered, have you tried a different USB Port? Is there any other USB devices also connected to the PC?

Hey everyone, I've officially got THE worst luck with technology EVER.

Today, my Western Digital 500GB External HDD has stopped working. One minute it's working fine - the next its completely unresponsive. I deleted a music folder off the hard drive that wouldnt play and I dont know if that's been the cause of it to become unstable.

When I plug it in via USB I can feel the disk spinning inside and loading, but the windows sound does not play. About 2-3 minutes later I get the sound but it does not appear under Hard Disk Drives on My Computer. When I try to go into device manager it crashes windows explorer.

After a couple of attempts the name is now "Local Disk I:' and not even 'Elements'

After about 10-15 minutes of being plugged in the drive clicks and won't do anything else.

I REALLY need some of the work off the hard drive - It's so important to my second year at university.

Any help you can give me I will be eternally grateful. Call me a *******, but I usually back up my work via dropbox anyway but theres some bits I didnt back up yet and it's so important I get them.

I've looked at getting a universal drive adaptor but i've heard about data recovery software but there seem to be so many out there - If my hard drive isnt completely screwed could someone reccomend me one or give me some advice?

Thanks in advance.

A:5510: Audio from websites not working when external monitor is also hooked up. (But Skype sound still working)

Hello. What might be happening is after you connect to the external display, the audio switches to HDMI audio. To get the audio to emit from the laptop's speakers again, go to the Windows Sounds dialog and make Speakers the default playback device (right click). You might have to do this every time you connect an HDMI cable.

The title says it all. I'm very frustrated with this problem since I really need to connect my laptop to an external monitor for work. I've read and tried all relative topics in this and intel forums (e. g: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/Yoga-920-can-t-connect-to-any-external-mon...), have done all steps mentioned (including firmware, bios and windows update, windows reset, ...) but the problem still persists. Apparently, most users that had faced the same problem been able to get it worked after installing "Type C Firmware for Windows 10 (64-bit)" or the BIOS update provided by Lenovo. I installed them successfully but nothing changed. I am sure it is a software issue since there is no sign of any hardware one (all devices are fine as device manager shows and diagnostics app found no problem). It was just working fine until suddenly stopped working (probably after some recent windows update). I would greatly appreciate any help.

Have you checked the cable to another computer -

Click "Display Options." Select "Identify Monitors" to locate the external monitor. Click the drop-down menu and choose the external monitor to switch the display.

I have a Lenovo G50 running Win8 32bit. But again, no luck using the HDMI port with a VGA to HDMI adapter. So I'm fresh out of ideas. Had anyone been able to resolve this successfully with this setup? And if so, how? I have a Windows 10 laptop and an external monitor. The monitor was working perfectly for a few weeks, until one day I switched on the laptop to find that the monitor was no longer working. Going to 'Display Settings' only showed one monitor, and pressing 'Detect' said 'Didn't detect another display'.

After updating all drivers, then purchasing new leads and adapters for the monitor, I still couldn't get it to work. Then I stumbled upon the 'Hardware and devices' troubleshooter which, after restarting my computer, made it work.

Less than a week later, I just restarted my machine and suddenly it's not working again. This time, the troubleshooter isn't fixing it. Every time, it just says to restart my computer to finish applying updates/drivers but restarting doesn't help.

Anyone have ideas how I can fix this?

I've been running this Z580 for a year or so, and updated to Windows 10 a couple of months ago. Both the laptop display and an external monitor (HPw1907 vga) have been working fine. The other day, the external monitor just stopped working.   I check the device manager and the Intel HD Graphics 4000 display adapter is disabled, due to a Code 43. I have tried rolling back to an earlier restore point, I've uninstalled and reinstalled several versions of the Intel graphics adapter, up through the current compatible one. The most recent display adapter driver from Intel is apparently not hardware compatible with this adapter. The funny thing, is that the driver wants to work! On booting, while the black and white Lenovo splash screen is displayed, with the little circular Windows logo circling around, I can move the cursor back and forth between monitors. As soon as the screen turns blue (I assume with Windows drivers loading) the external monitor blanks out and I'm back to one screen.  Based on that behavior, I'm wondering if it's not a display driver that is specfically the problem, since I've loaded up the latest drivers several times, but if maybe a recent Windows update has sneaked in a driver or component for something else that is causing the Intel driver to crash. Any thoughts?  Back in earlier versions of Windows, you could have the system load one component at a time during boot, so you could check for incompatibilities. So, if the... Read more

"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
This has been constant throughout the whole ordeal
2. Whenever connecting a monitor as soon as I plug it in the monitor lights up as if it were going to work and just says hdmi not connected then goes to sleep. Nothing is detected in device manager.

Hello, I recently bought the Ultra Dock 90 for my T450s.  I have one external monitor currently connected through the dock.  When I push the power button on the docking station (laptop lid closed) to turn on the computer, the computer turns on, but the external monitor does not engage.  When I lift the laptop lid, there is no image on the laptop screen either.  The laptop is on, but does not respond to any key stokes on the actual laptop.  I then have to do a hard reboot using the power button on the laptop. If I initially power the laptop by lifting the lid and hitting the laptop power button, the compter boots and my external screen works.  I can then close the laptop lid and everything is fine. I know the power button on the dock should power the computer and external monitor on.  I am guessing there is a simple solution to resolve this, but I am not a computer person and need help. One thing to note - when I lift the lid after trying to power the laptop through the dock, I see that the Function Green Light is illuminated.  Not sure if this information is helpful in determining the problem. Please help! Peterrabbit33

Hi, My p50 display just stopped working out of the blue yesterday. When i connect an external monitor or HDMI (TV)  the screen pops on the tv or external monitor. Everything works fine. It's just that the screen on the p50 is just blank. To make it more complex, the touch is working fine. Just to be precise. The black screen is also during post and boot of windows so i don't believe it's a driver issue. The only thing i can think is that the display is broke but don't understand why touch works. Is there a way to reset perhaps bios to default or does anyone have a good idea before i raise a RMA?. The p50 is working still fine but just the screen. Thanks  Ivan

I have a lenovo b570e laptop and am running Windows 8.1.

I recently bought a new monitor (ASUS ve248h) to use as a dual monitor along side my own laptop however upon connecting the HDMI cable with the monitor it doesn't appear to work. I have tried updating the drivers and the hdmi port does work while I am connecting to my LG tv using the hdmi port. I have used various cables including the one that connects it to the tv however so far without success.

I am a bit clueless as to why it would work with the tv and not the monitor also my brothers laptop (which has Ubuntu) does successfully connect to the monitor.

Any help would be much appreciated and Thanks in Advanced

Dear all,
Wonder if you can help me solve a problem. I have just received an XPS13-9350 from the Outlet last week. It was certified refurbished.
I've tried to connect a VGA monitor to it via a USB-C to HDMI, then HDMI to VGA cable. The HDMI to VGA cable works perfectly on my Inspiron 15. The setup also works if I full power down the XPS13, attach USB-C to HDMI to VGA to monitor, and then boot up. The external monitor then works almost perfectly (with the exception of Netflix's video player which makes it flicker blue - Youtube and local video are completely fine).
What I cannot do is plug in this monitor whilst the XPS13 is on already - which is inconvenient as I move on and off desk a lot, and powering down the computer every time is unhelpful. Oddly, the monitor will also not be recognised if I simply Restart from Windows. I have to fully power down and plug everything in before switching the computer on again.
I have updated BIOS, video card and Thunderbolt drivers since and none of these has solved the problem. My system info is:
DELL XPS13-9350
Windows 10
Core i7-6560U, Intel Iris 540 graphics
8GB RAM, 256GB SSD.

I upgraded to Windows 10 last week and everything was smooth.  Today when rebooting my system, the unit no longer can see my external display.  I have tried multiple other displays and none seem to work.  I have the latest video drivers for Win10 from the support site installed but it still doesn't work.  Any thoughts?

A:Yoga 2 Pro + Windows 10 = External Monitor not working via micro HDMI

I experienced the same - and also inconsistently that the system is going sluggish/lagging heavily. To fix problem with HDMI downgrade to drivers for Win8.1 - it works but hopefully Lenovo will fix this issue with Win10 drivers!? Overall upgrading to Win10 has been a bad experience (regarding the lagging of the system which usually occurs after 20-30 min after logging on). I've tried removing all third-party startup programs (including Lenovos) - but to no help. The frustration is increasing - any tips will be appreciated :-)

I have bought a Pro Dock (4X10H04503) as 'final solution' to simple remove the tablet for travel and plug it back for stationary use. This kind of works. But when cold booting the system (BIOS is set to boot when power is turned on), the monitor on the HDMI output never shows, isn't even detected by anything. So it doesn't show up on the Intel Graphics Properties for the HD 5300 neither. In order to make it work like in my current situation (T410s, docked, power-on boots, and switches to external monitor without any user interaction), I need to either unplug the power of the dock after login, or remove the tablet from the dock and put it back. Only then does the second monitor show as alternative, resepctively is switched to.  Any help by someone who has an idea how to avoid the power_on - login - remove_tablet - insert_tablet cycle will be appreciated! Uwe

Hello I have been fighting issues with my external monitor not turning back on after sleep. I have it set to hybrid mode, I understand the other fix is to set it to discrete mode but my other laptop of the same type does wake up after moving the mouse in hybrid mode. I tried multiple things. 1.) Updated Intel Management Drivers and Software 2.) Updated Thunderbolt Software 3.) Used Graphic Driver Uninstaller and to no avail.  I also installed every update for Windows 10 on their web site. The other fix is to enable and disable the NVIDIA driver in the and that wakes up the HDMI port it seems, but that should not be the case, I would like it to just turn on with the flick of the mouse or button like my other laptop. Is it a failing graphic card of Nvidia or Intels end? I do notice after the monitor sleeps the NVIDIA drivers control panel settings go missing. I already uninstalled completely and reinstalled the drivers but my computer is still having this problem. Are their any suggestions on Lenovo's end or fixes? I bought this laptop from Amazon and I also joined a 3 year support service from them.

A:Lenovo P50 - HDMI External Monitor Not Working After Sleep (My Other Laptop of the Same Kind does)

Have you compared the Power Option settings on the two laptops to see if they match as well?Do the two systems share the same monitor, and if not, how is your monitor configured, does it have an option to set the input source to HDMI vs. automatically detecting the source? When in the mode where the screen does not turn back on, what happens if you press the following key combination Windows Key + Shift + Ctrl + B  (forces a reset of graphics cards) do you hear a beep and your screen wake up?     That key combination sometimes works to wake the monitors, and while not a solution, it may be a work around until you find a permanent one. Best of luck,

My Dell Latitude E6420 has black screen of death. Let me explain what happen. My friend bought a battery for his E6440 laptop and his laptop not starting (no display) he asked me to check on my laptop for that battery.
My laptop display gone after inserting his battery and changed to my battery still didn't worked. I connected external monitor display coming there (external monitor is showing primary). but laptop display not coming to make it secondary.
I did steps.
1. drained power 30-1-2. still didn't work
2. changed RAM slots with another still didn't work
3. tried D+ power, did not see anything.
this morning I observed If close display 70 to 80% I can see barely light on the screen window login in the angle.
Is that means back light gone? What are solutions have now? Do I need to change display? give me suggestion.

I couldn't see a thread about the same issue I have, so I signed up.

Before I start, I'd like to point out that I am not IT savvy (cars, trucks, household appliances - yes. computers - no), so please avoid IT jargon if possible.

The problem...
Our (Windows 7) computer has been working fine, nothing has been changed or added.
The computer was in use this morning and left unattended for a while and as usual had gone dormant.
When the mouse was wriggled to "wake it up", nothing happened - the monitor remained blank.

Eventually we tried the "universal fix" of turning it off & turning it back on, but it still did not work...
The "no signal" message popped up on the screen as it went off and when it was turned back on the "Windows was not closed correctly..." message briefly appeared (it does not do that now).

I'm using a lap top to send this (as I cannot use the desk top).

Any ideas?

I have an HP laptop and I have been running it with dual monitors. I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and after I installed it I noticed that the built in monitor of my laptop looked strange and when I opened the display settings to change the screen resolution and set the external monitor as a separate monitor rather than a mirror I noticed that only one monitor was detected and it was the external one (Generic non-pnp monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter) and the built in monitor does NOT show up at all.

I've tried the detection button, in hopes that the computer would read the built in monitor and I could fix the problem. This did not help. I tried unplugging/replugging the external monitor to no avail. I tried restarting without the external monitor plugged in and it STILL reads the built in monitor as if it is the external one. Is there anyway to fix this? I have not tried re-installing the OS, not yet anyways.

Any suggestions ?

A:Monitor Issues - Laptop Reading Built In Monitor as if it were my external monitor.

Only thing I can think of is to disconnnect the external monitor, uninstall any monitors listed and then reboot and hope the computer installs the correct drivers for the laptop monitor.

I am using a 22" screen for my primary screen and the laptop lid open for a secondary screen. The main screens resolution is 1680x1050, I can set it to anything I want and it's always using the full screen. The laptop screen on the other hand will only use the full screen if it's at 1400x1050 resolution (max for that screen, IBM Thinkpad T43). With the large 22" screen I have no trouble reading the screen at high resolutions, the screen is huge, with the little 14" screen though I have to strain to read the screen at 1400x1050.

The problem is when I set the laptop screen to anything lower than 1400x1050, it uses less of the screen. Preferrably I want it at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 (I dont know which I want yet as I can't see the freaking screen at that resolution). At 1280x1024 for instance the useable screen is just a box in the middle, so the "1280x1024" is still barely readable for me cause it's shrunk from full screen, plus it's just annoying only using a portion of the screen.

I have played with the ATI Control Center, the Thinkpad display settings and windows display settings and just cannot get this thing to go full screen at lower resolutions when docked and using the external monitor.

Anyway to resolve this?
