3rd Gen Thinkpad X1 Yoga - coming soon?

Q: 3rd Gen Thinkpad X1 Yoga - coming soon?

At CES 2018, Lenovo announced the new 3rd Gen Thinkpad X1 Yoga and said it would be available in January 2018. The Lenovo website still shows "coming soon," and has for over 3 weeks now. Am I missing some more recent announcement about timing? Our IT staff said they contacted Lenovo and the rep said Q1 or Q2, 2018.That will be a long, long time to say "coming soon!" Is there a chance there will be such a long delay? Is it likely because of the Intel patches?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a thinkpad yoga 14 with the 5th gen intel processor (if it matters)My problem is that the left click button that you use with the track ball, not the actual touch pad, is not coming back up. It still registers a click but it doesnt come back up. Sometimes it doesn't "unclick" so when I drag the cursor, it higihlights everything on the screen. This is a hardware issue, I was wondering if anyone knows what the button mechanism looks like or know which part to replace? thank you in advance!

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

I am hhaving difficulty finding an acceptable scaling mix between resolution, system scaling, and edge scaling. At 1080p, 125%, 125%, os navigation is mostly fine, but edge text is way too large. At 1080p, 125%, 100%, edge text is way too small. At all combinations text is inflated (but crisp) in certain elements while fuzzy in others. What scaling combinations work best for you? I am considering returning this to Best Buy and upgrading to a Pro 4 / Book, or even a Mac. The scaling is ruining an otherwise great experience.

Disclosure:  I received these laptops from Lenovo as part of their advocacy program, so huge thanks to the folks over at Lenovo. I don't receive compensation for my review, and as always, all opinions are my own.

The ThinkPad X1 Yoga is first modern ThinkPad that I've ever owned.  I?ve been using Lenovo?s Ideapad lineup for a very long time, and while I?ve used ThinkPads in the past, the X1 Yoga will be my first personal ThinkPad that I own.  So how does it stack up to the Yoga 910?  Let?s find out! I have the i7 UHD model of the Yoga 910 and the i5 FHD model of the ThinkPad X1 Yoga.  I tried out the latest Yoga 920, but I haven?t tried the latest X1 Yoga yet? hopefully, I will!

Hardware & Design
Even though both laptops carry ?yoga? in their name, the hardware behind them is vastly different.  The ThinkPad X1 Yoga has the classic ThinkPad black design, which is made of a carbon-fiber hybrid for the top cover and a magnesium-PPS hybrid for the bottom cover.  The Yoga 910 has a similar design from the Lenovo?s Yoga lineup, with an aluminum build throughout.

The ThinkPad only comes in two colors: classic black and silver; whereas the Yoga has a whole suite of colors to choose from, such as silver, copper, bronze, and even a few exclusive designs, such as the Vibe designs for the Yoga 920 and the Star Wars themed designs for the Yoga 910.

I have two staff members with different Yoga models, but with the same pen issue. Say, for instance, OneNote is open. The pen doesn't draw or write, but it can select and still be recognized. When I try using an old stylus from an HP Elitebook, it works TOTALLY fine - even the button on the pen functions properly. This suddenly started after months of the Lenovo pens working fine. I thought maybe it was a driver issue, but it can't be as the HP pen works.... I'm thinking it's the pen itself just getting worn down? It looks okay though but may be just a little loose... Any help / direction would be greatly appreciated!

I have recently bought a Thinkpad Yoga 460 with Thinkpad Pen Pro. I leave it in the laptop slot for charging for more than a day and it gives me only a few minutes of usage. As per the user guide, it should be 80% charge in 15 seconds and 100% after 5 minutes. But it runs out of charge very soon. It shows me the low battery level indicator as soon as I use it on the screen. First day of usage (appox 4 days ago) it gave me about 30 - 45 minutes of continuous. But after that not more than 5 minutes. Please let me know if this is an issue with the Pen or Laptop charging port. Is there any way I can troubleshoot it?Please also let me know the average usage time for the pen, if you are continuously using it.

Hi
Welcome to the forums.

I do not have that kind of pen, but I think is the one that has some "bronce contacts" at the top of the pen. I had read some other post about it, just in case check that "contacts" to make sure they are touching with the charger when you put the pen into it's holder. Sometimes the contacts may move.

Just curious, why is the new Thinkpad X1 Yoga I7, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, FHD about $1,000 more than the similarly equipped commercial Lenovo 910?

Is it the ThinkPad brand name? The eraser nubbin? The 2 combined?

Just curious.

I've got a friend who needs a new laptop. She likes the touch/fold aspect of my 1st gen Thinkpad X1 Yoga. Do you all think she would be happy with the commercial Yoga 910?

Any real reason to get the new plain FHD ThinkPad X1 Yoga instead of the similarly equipped commercial Yoga available at Best Buy besides spending an extra $1000 for the ThinkPad brand name?

I've owned 6 various ThinkPads since 2011 FWIW. I get it, they're cream of the crop. But I kinda got sticker shock when I just priced out a plain FHD (and we need nothing more) X1 Yoga. About  $2,800, wow!

A:Why is the ThinkPad X1 Yoga $1,000 more than a similar Yoga 910?

@Jelks, The biggest difference I see between the X1 Yoga (2nd) and the Yoga 910 is active pen support which seems to be missing from the 910. You could use a capacitive stylus, but expect fingertip resolution, not pinpoint, and no pressure-sensitivity. Fewer USB ports: no HDMI or MicroSD; no Thunderbolt. No TPM module, if you need to store encrypted creditials, e.g., for BitLocker. Not sure about battery life; they claim up to 9 hours of local video for the 910 vs. up to 15 of MobileMark for the X1. Not an apple-to-apple comparison. You're not going to get the (soon to be patched, at least for now) security hole that is Intel's vPro management tech. You may not get Windows 10 Pro, possibly just Home (but you could always give Microsoft the money to upgrade if you need BitLocker or Remote Access). You're not going to get all the "mil-spec" design and testing etc, but if it's a personal machine, you're probably going to avoid abusing it. As you suggest, the "wave" keyboard -- including the trackpoint "eraser nubbin" -- is definitely going to be more expensive on the ThinkPad than the plain Yoga keyboard. I used two generations of ThinkPads (T61p and W520), but about 3 years ago I switched to a Dell XPS 13. A year or so ago, I ordered a X1 Yoga 1st gen for my wife and she likes it very much, so I am pretty familiar with the design and capabilities. TLDR: I think most people would be happy with the 910 vs. X1 unless they want the active pen. Als... Hello, Last week my X250 installed a significant Windows 10 update and then a BIOS update. Since then, frequently, but I don't think always, when I restart the laptop after it had been in standby the machine actually restarts. When you open the lid, the green power light in the power button flashes rapidly and then the machine reboots, with the obvious consequence that open documents are lost etc. I cannot be absolutely certain that this is linked to one of the updates, but I have had the machine for just under a year and this had never happened before. It is not a battery issue as this shows a good charge level after a restart from standby. Has anyone come across a similar problem? Many thanks in advance for any advice. Paul

Earlier today I was trying to remove the back of my Lenovo Yoga 700 (14 inch model).  I removed all the screws, and followed the hardware maintenance manual.  When I got to prying the thing off, the left, right, and back (near the fan) sides popped off with relative ease.  However, the front end (the side opposite the fan) would not come off.  I tried using a small flathead screwdriver to pry it off, but I was worried about it cracking.  I decided to just screw the backplate back on and not mess with it any more.  This is where my problem arises.  The backplate won't re-seat properly because of a standoff that keeps the SSD in place.  I  didn't notice it until this morning, but there is a slight bowing in the chassis.  I know I need to fully remove the backplate to re-seat it properly, but I don't want to break anything.  What should I do?

I have a new Yoga 710. I have just noticed a faint ticking noise coming from the right-hand vent under the screen. When I say ticking, it is a softer sound than a click, a bit like a mellow kitchen clock. The tick sticks pretty close to 1 Hz (as far as I can measure it with my ear and a metronome). I looked for a software tool to monitor the fan speed but I couldn't find one that worked on this model of computer. I hear a fan starting up sometimes, but I have read (tell me if I'm wrong) that this model has two fans, so I'm not really sure how to measure the health of the other fan. My question is: Is this a hardware problem that will require me to mail the computer back to the retailer, or is it some other problem, such as the BIOS issue mentioned here in relation to an earlier Yoga model?

I just bought a Thinkpad Yoga from Best Buy and upon opening, found that the pen pro included does not work. I'm on the most updated version of all the drivers, and the touch screen and multitouch with my hands still work. After taking an multimeter to measure the voltage of the pen, I found that the pen just wasn't charging. I'm a bit hesitant to check the voltage of the charging silo itself but my suspicion is that the pen is dead. Could this be a software problem? Has anyone encountered a similar problem? Should I return to pen and the laptop to bestbuy or just the pen? Or should this issue be brought to Lenovo instead?

A:Thinkpad Yoga 460 (Best Buy) - Thinkpad Pro Pen do...

I don't have a 460, but I do have a 260, which is a smaller, but VERY similar machine.  I had the same problem and I believe it is not the pen.  Before you do anything, you need to unplug the machine and disable the internal battery.  You do that by going into the BIOS and under the config tab, look under power.  There will be an option to disable the battery.  When this is selected, the machine will turn off.  The battery is re-enabled the next time you plug it in.  IF THE BATTERY IS NOT DISCONNECTED, YOU WILL CREATE A SHORT AND BLOW A IRREPLACEABLE FUSE ON THE MOTHERBOARD.  Remove the pen and look inside, where you will see 2 contacts.  My guess is that one or both got pushed back into the housing during manufacturing process.  You can take something fine and sharp like a needle and gently free them so they will pop back out.  Once I popped mine out, the pen charged very quickly and I never had another problem with it.

Hi, I have 3 problems with my Yoga 460: 1. (this should be easy):Where do I get a backup image for my system from? I did not find any links on the support page. 2. I tried to download the bios update to version 1.18 from the website. If I click on the windows installer file, there is always the message "file not found". If I try to download the iso file (which is indeed working), I receive an error message about wrong format when trying to mount it to a usb drive. 3. This is the most important issue for me at the moment:As soon as I try to update my system with Lenovo Companion software, I always get the message that I would have to upgrade my Lenovo System Interface Driver. If I hit ok to install this app, I get a download link. I tried installing it several times. After having restarted the system, the same error appears again (with the same download link).  I would really appreciate if anyone of you could help me on these topics! Greetings from Germany, Simon

Check if after installing it, it will work with Lenovo Companion.

This is not the first time this has happened, where having opened the laptop to tablet mode, a cable appears to have come loose. This means that the laptop no longer recognises that the laptop is back to laptop mode, so it doesn't reactivate the keyboard. Lenovo last time fixed this saying it was a fault with the assembly, but it has happened again, this time out of the 12 month warranty, and 3 months since it last happened. I really expected better quality of manufacture and the repair seems to have been very poor. This is my work laptop and the only computer I got, and any time spent without it is crippling to my work. I am currently using an external keyboard, which means working on the move is very inconvenient. I have a YOGA 51014ISK Is there a way for me to ask Lenovo to fix their repair mistake? I seem unable to find a proper way to contact/complain regarding this. I am not happy that I have to pay for repairs again for the exact same issue so quickly after the last "fix".  Otherwise, is there a repair guide I can follow to fix this myself? I didn't see one, and I'll need to reconnect the keyboard wire inside. Thanks for your time.

Hello,I'm having trouble since I recieved my LENOVO ThinkPad Yoga 14 two months ago.It is on guarantee.I've noticed that the master fan keeps starting even if the computer is not working at full capacity. Sometimes, it starts right after windows as finished booting! And it's a brand new computer, Intel i7 CPU and 8GO of RAM!The fan keeps working then even if I'm only surfing on the internet or working on word. It's REALLY annoying. I feel like this is already an old computer by it's blowing. My old computer, a 5 years old Toshiba Satellite, doesn't blow so much.I've searched over the web and found that LENOVO had released a new UEFI Bios that was suposed to fix this problem. I've installed it and nothing changed! The fan kept on turning on for nothing else than a gmail home page.I've already asked about another problem on the ThinkPad Yoga 14. It's about a background noise on the built in speakers. Here's the link: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-S-Series-ThinkPad-Yoga/Background-noise-on-ThinkPad-Yoga-14-bu...I'm not having a good experience with this Yoga 14. I was looking for professional quality and it is not.Can someone tell me if they have the same problems? What LENOVO is going to do about it?Thanks.Ludovic.

A:ThinkPad Yoga 14 - The Fan keeps on turning on eve...

Hi ludovicfd Can you please post the full model number of you machine and which Windows version are you using?. For example my TP Yoga 14 is "20DM008UUS" and I didn't experienced those issues.  I'm guessing that your machine fan is blowing too much and making huge noise. In my case I can feel more the hard drive noise than the fan, it is not like the HDD is "that loud", but when you are on a quiet enviroment you can feel it "scrattching". Do you want to try first updating any firmware / BIOS on your machine at the latest level ? After that another alternative will be to try to update the driver for the chipset and power. The basic thing for me is to try to update the drivers and firmware this way:- Windows Update- Lenovo System Update- Lenovo Companionand after that search manually for updates on the Lenovo Support site with your specific model number. Sorry, it is trial and error to see if a driver can fix your issue. If after updating the drivers, you think it is hardware issue you should try to contact Lenovo's Customer Support site Regards

A:Thinkpad Yoga 260 - upgrade

The SSD can be upgraded.  I have a ThinkPad Yoga 260 that I upgraded to 16GB, but there are complications.  I believe that there was difficulty with interference from WWAN antennas and RAM modules, so the models that come with the antenna wires have soldered RAM.  It looks to me like that model doesn't have WWAN so I would guess it has socketed RAM, but I have no way to be sure without looking inside.
