Windows 10 Office 365 cannot open files from: recent file list

Q: Windows 10 Office 365 cannot open files from: recent file list

Dear Tenforums users,

Since a few weeks I found myself unable to open any documents (Word, Powerpoint) from the 'Recent files list' in my office applications. Everytime I try to open it, I get the message: "The item you selected is unavailable. It might have been moved, renamed or removed. Do you want to remove it from the list?"
I already tried the automatic repair function but it was in vain so far.

Thank you in advance!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I upgraded from Office 97 to Office XP; the "recently used file" list on the Options page is grayed out. There is no longer a list of recent files under File on the menu bar. Can this feature be restored/activated?

It has been suggested to configure a system policy but I believe that is a WinXP feature. I am running Win ME.

I just installed Office 2003 on my new machine running Windows 7 Home Premium. Because this PC has an SSD, I installed Office on Drive D: with all my other programs.
On my old machine running Windows 7 Home Premium it was installed on the C: drive without any problems.

But now Word and Excel do not retain the Recent Files list after a restart of the PC. It will retain the list while the PC is running, even after closing and reopening the programs.

It is also not remembering the window size, or whether the ruler is on or off.

Any suggestions or workarounds?

Good morning Bleeping Computer community,
I have the strangest thing happening in my Recent Files list on my Windows 10 computer.  Files with a ZERO byte size, NO create date, NO modify date and with name in Chinese characters appear in the Recent Files list.  This is the third time in 2 weeks I have noticed a batch of such files.  Below, I will paste in the file names that appear.  I tried copying the names into Google Translate, but that did not provide anything I understood.
These files do NOT exist if I browse to my desktop.  They are not it the Recycle Bin either.  I have unchecked all the HIDE options for File Explorer.
OS: Windows 10 Home
AV: Avast (purchased)
Make: Lenovo
What I have done so far:
1) Scan with Avast.  Nothing
2) Scan with Malware Bytes:  A few PUP that I removed.
Since those actions, the most recent batch of them appeared.  It seems a few repeat and here are the file names...

I have searched everywhere on the Internet, including Microsoft Support and Community, for a solution to this problem. I am looking for a way to clear the Recent Places list. I can clear Recent Items. In fact, almost all of the solutions for clearing Recent Places that a search turns up actually clears Items. But nothing does a mass clearing of Places.

I can right-click on the Recent Places icon in my task bar and the right-click on any single place, then delete that. But then the next visited place just scrolls up into view. Nowhere can I find an option for clearing all recent places in the list. I have tried searching for Recent places in the Start Menu, in the Explorer Location Bar and elsewhere, but every option that eventually comes up applies only to Recent Items.

Anyone have any ideas?

I am running Office 2003 on Windows 7. My PC is only 6 months old and everything has been running like butter. All of a sudden Office files open slowly when double-clicked from their respective locations (they would normally blink up). If I open Word or Excel and then open the files from there, they open quick. Outlook on the other hand, is just slow to load up...which it wasn't before.

I did a ton of research online and couldn't get a clear fix. My thoughts are:
Anti Virus? (I'm using AVG Free)
Ad-Aware Free? (Ad-Watch live is on...however it was on before)
Windows update or office update?

But obviously I'm here to get your thoughts. It's a pain in the ass when I bought a new PC so it could perform quick, and now spreadsheets and email take 20 seconds or more to open.

Whenever I try to do so (by either directly clicking on the files themselves, or by right-clicking on the recent items tab and then the clear recent items option), a box turns up which says Windows Explorer has stopped working, and is checking for a solution, and then Explorer restarts.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Word\Place MRU]
But now with Office 2013 i have a different registry to migrate which is:

I tried to add a rule to copy all the User MRU field which was

This last thing did not work when i tried to test the migration of this settings from one computer to another.

Just bought a new laptop with Windows7 64bit installed-my first exposure to Windows7. I had Office 2007 installed on my old Dell 32 bit machine. I had also recently pruchased Office 2010 and installed that on my new machine.

Now, when I try to open those 32bit 2007 files with 64bt 2011, Iget an error message that "no picture file is available", or words to that effect. When I try to "open with", the only option displayed is "Microsoft Office" with an icon that looks like a picture file. When I try to browse to the proper office program(Excel, for example), there are none of teh Office suite programs displayed, only "Microsoft Office".

I can navigate seperately to the proper progran, Excel, etc., and drag the file into the application, and it opens, and all seems to work OK. I "save as" the proper application file, but it still will not open with double-click on the file name.

I have not seen this particular item in the forums and would appreciate very much some help in fixing this issue.

Hey All,

Here is my issue. The Company we consult for has not transitioned all of the way to Office 2007. We have a number of machines that still have Office 2003. Compatibility Pack works on almost all issues.

Current issue is one of our users received a PowerPoint 2003 that has embedded PowerPoint 2007 files. When the user opens the PowerPoint 2007 file Office 2003 shuts down. He has to download the 2007 file to his desktop.

From what I can see this is because the file conversion process shuts down Office 2003 before attempting to open the PowerPoint 2007 file.

Another issue that may be complicating the error is we had to run a Fixit patch from Microsoft that was causing Excel, Word and PowerPoint to be scanned which caused long opening times. I don't remember the KB article for that one at the moment but will find it if I need to.

Thanks for any help in advance.

I realize that this is not primarily a Windows7 problem, but it just bothered me to see one program stopping me from setting the file associations for another program. And I need to vent.

I have been running both Libre Office (LO) and Open Office (OO) for months now, not a heavy user, just trying to keep both going while I figure which one I liked best. These apps share file extensions, and are very file compatible, and I had always been able to open the same document in either

Both families of programs pinned to the Start Menu had, for months, contained file history of many documents, some documents showing as history in both app-families, and able to be opened in either LO or OO. Yesterday, I upgraded Open Office. First thing I noticed, the LO apps pinned to the start menu had their document history icons changed to OO icons. Sure enough, these documents, in the history list of a pinned LO app, open in OO. Rats, I think--I guess I will have to re-assign the extensions to LO. . . . No can do! I have never had this happen before, but I now when I use "Open With" on a file with the shared extensions, (.ods, .odt,...) then "Choose Default Programs...", then "browse" to set a new default, the LO app does not stick. So far, I am unable to set the file association to any of the LO apps.

I'm having an issue with Windows Explorer changing from one library directory to another on the recent folders list. Anytime I open a file in a new folder or library, it replaces the existing folder link with the new library and/or folder, instead of creating a new shortcut to the most recently accessed folder. It used to create a new link in the list every time I accessed a new folder! Now the link actually switches between libraries, when I move from one to another; i.e. I just opened a file from the Pictures library, and then one from the Videos library. The link to the Pictures library is immediately replaced by the one for Videos. It doesn't seem to matter whether or not the link is pinned to the list.

Everything worked fine until yesterday when I switched the connection on my external hard drive from the USB on my Windows 7 desktop to the USB on my Netgear R6300 router, so that I could network my files to another HP desktop and an HP laptop, both of which are running Windows 10, as well as my Kindle Fire. When I changed the physical configuration of the network, obviously my existing links were no longer valid, so I mass deleted all of them so that I could just start over with the new network path. Now, every time I open a file from a new folder or library, I lose the one I accessed earlier. The recent items feature is enabled in the Start Menu tab in Task Bar and Start Menu Properties box. A:File Explorer isn't showing recent files

Hi, there may be other consequences if your disk has been affected, or you may be very lucky and a small part of your registry has been corrupted.

A possible solution to your immediate problem is here:
File Explorer Recent Files and Frequent Folders groups are missing - Microsoft Community
- basically, create another user, and copy the relevant part of the registry back to your original user's registry.

I would also recommend you run
chkdsk C: /F
from an elevated command prompt
and also
SFC /scannow

just to check all is (probably) well.

Here's a very useful method which will help you avoid a great deal of difficulty- strongly recommended and used by most here:

Start using disk imaging. Regularly. Before any major change, and after a big change or a series of smaller changes. System Restore isn't enough.. it can help sometimes, but only if you turn it on (it's off by default.. absurd).

With disk images you
a. Can restore your disk/partition in a defined time (e.g 20 to 40 mins).
b. Have a full backup - can extract files.
c. Can use them to rebuild your system on a new HDD (e.g.)
d. Have peace of mind (most important!)

Get a copy of Macrium Reflect or Aomei Backupper (both have free options). The first is more geeky and a cut down version of a commercial product - no incremental backup. The 2nd is more straightforward, offering both differential and incremental backups. (You can read about those yourself if unsure).

This is pretty self-explanatory.Run in Admin does not kick in when launching afile via a Taskbar's pinned app icon, even when the pinned app has been set to 'Run in Admin' mode (under Properties -> Advanced). The same thing happens in the Start Menu -- the app can be set (Properties -> Advanced) to Run in Admin mode, and the file does not launch this way.Why is this a problem? Because if one is supposed to use accounts like MS asks, then running as a standard user after having afile created in an admin account, that user cannot alter the doc in any way -- no saves work. At least this is true for files not on the C partition. The only way W7 permits saves is to run an app in Admin mode.(I've run into this countless times in the span of a few days with Notepad & PSPad.)If the W7 team wants to insist that docs won't automatically run in Admin mode under these conditions (which they should!!!!!!), then at least give users a right-click context menu option to Run as Admin from the recent/pinned items list. Currently there is no such context menu option.Thereby, all recent items / pinned items are rendered a useless feature.....Still loving this OS.a.k.a.

You want a non-admin user to run a restricted operation. You can easily set the CMD icon to it's Properties to always 'run as administrator'. You can open any app 'as admin' with it. The non-admin user, however could not approve the dialog to open CMD and run an app.Rating posts helps other users

Hello, everyone, I am using the most current preview build of Windows 10. (Loving the Fast Ring.)

I have a question about clearing the Recent Files section of Quick Access, in File Explorer.

I know how to clear and reset the Recent Files list in Quick Access. I right-click on Quick Access, choose Options. In General, I choose Options, and deselect "Show recently used files in Quick Access." Then, I select it again to enable it and start fresh.

I was wondering if there is a way I can write a batch file, macro, or something like that, to automate this process, rather than using all these mouse clicks. Or, does something like that already exist? A freeware app or something, that I haven't found yet as of this writing?

It's not a big deal at all if I can't, or if there isn't such a freeware, but I'm just curious. Thank you! Jd

I recently had a trojan in my laptop.

I run spywarefighter, Zone alarm, AVG, Antivirguard, Adaware, Spybot and then House call trend micro.

They were all finding trojans and infected cookies all over the place.

After checking out some tech support forums I followed some instructions to have my system clean of spyware.

That meaning, I run AVG, Antivirguard, SpywareBlaster, Spy Sweeper, Adware, Spybot in safe mode with system restore deactivated.

After that I run CClean which seemed to be the one who got rid of Windows Office XP

I restarted the computer in normal mode and everything was working fine, but I got no more windows office package.

When I try to open up Word, I get the installer windows it does not find the instalation even with the CDrom in the computer, I get PR011.MSI not found error and the worse part is that I cannot open any program from the package, Outlook, word, excel etc...

I was thinking about uninstalling Windows Office and reinstalling it again, is that the best option?

I allowed the recent Windows and MS Office updates to install on my Windows 7 system this past week.
After re-booting, the Snipping Tool would no longer work.
I backed off all the updates; then reinstalled all but those  three associated with MS Office 2007 security updates and rebooted.
The snipping tool was operational again.
I have not seen any other indication that others experienced this problem. I have still not re-installed the three updates associated with MS Office 2007 security.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed at this point?
Thank you.

You could just use PrintScreen key to take screenshots and paste them into a graphics program.

I'm running 64 bit Windows 7.

A little while ago, I decided I did not want things to show up in my recent items list. This was when I was still using Vista.

I found a small registry change online, applied it, and poof, no more items showed up in the "Recent Items" list. Worked like a charm.

This morning I decided, on second thought, it would be useful to be able to reference a list of recent documents.

I have three registry back-ups saved, for October and November 2009. This is the timeframe I think I made this change in. But when I click on the back up registry file, it tries to open the file with notepad.exe and says "The filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect."

Should I use regedit.exe to open these files instead? Or does anyone know the specific registry change I can make to get my "Recent Items" to start listing files again?

Third, is there a change I can make so that only certain file types show up in the Recent Items list? I only want Word and Excel file associations to appear, but not any videos. That was the original issue.

A:Solved: How to change registry to save documents in Recent Items List (Windows 7)

Figured it out!

HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Start_TrackDocs and set this REG_DWORD value to 1

This value was initially set to zero (0).

Made that change and poof!

I'm having a problem opening a text file in Documents that I wrote using Open Office.

It's extension is .wps. I get a message it opens with swriter.exe.

When I try to open the text file, I get a long list of titles, such as: Open Office.org 1.0 Text Document, PSD - Adobe Photshop, etc., but I don't get the text file I wrote.

I recently did Disk Cleanup and Error Checking, so I might have removed a program I needed to click open and read my Open Office text files.

Advice would be appreciated.
