Solved: Formating my Maxtor Hard Drive...

Q: Solved: Formating my Maxtor Hard Drive...

Hello,
How do I format my hard drive, and create a boot disk so that I can clean out my old hard drive and then reinstall Win98 plus my device drivers? I have a new MSI 845 Ultra -AR motherboard with Pentium 4 and I am in the process of completing my building of a new PC. I still am using my old 10.2 Gbyte Maxtor hard drive from my previous Gateway PC but I want to clean it out and then re-install Win98 plus my device drivers. Thanks for all of your help in advance.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Solved: Formating my Maxtor Hard Drive...

For boot disk, go to Add/Remove Programs > Startup Disk. To format HD, boot using boot disk and use the command

Code:
format c:
.

Make sure you save all of your drivers and files you need on a CD or different partition before continuing.

Hi Guys,

I have a gateway computer that I want to format the hard drive. I put the recovery disk in and I was expecting it to say "press any key to boot from cd..." I never get the message. I have tried changing the boot order. I have tried disabling all the boot options except for cdrom but I am still unable to get the message. Does anyone know what I need to do on this gateway? I understand the only way to format the hard drive is to use the recovery disk. Am I correct?

I am having an issue with a Maxtor Model Number 92739U6 hard drive. I have just finished formatting and installing windows xp home edition. Everything was going ok until I restarted the computer.

First right after I restarted the computer I got an error message A Disk Read Error Occurred. Press CTRL+ALT+Del.

I was unsure what caused this error message so I started to research this issue on Maxtor’s website and they advised me to use fdisk /mbr to repair the error. I did that and restarted the computer.

Same Error….

The thing I can’t figure out is why I am able to boot right to windows using a boot disk.

Can anyone tell me what I should do next?

What would I have to get windows to load without a boot disk?

Hello !

Sorry if this has been answered before, i haven't had time to search the forum for a solution to my problem.

I have recently purchased an additiona hard drive for my computer, so that i can install the OS (Windows 7) onto it and then format my previous hard drive which had the OS on it in the first place.

I have successfully installed Windows 7 on the additional hard drive (being 80GB), but when i went to format my other hard drive using Computer management i got the error: "Windows cannot format the system partition on this disk". A friend then suggested i try to format it using the prompt command, but i got the error of: "Access denied as you do not have sufficient prvileges. You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode."

The hard drive still has Windows 7 installed onto it, along with other programmes which i have previously installed.

Here is a screen shot of the Computer management screen which i am presented with: http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff11/Gorgor_Theynrand/Computermanagement.png

Much appreciated for your time and i hope the problem can be easily resolved

A:Solved: Formating Hard Drive Issue.

Its because you left it in and left it as the main drive, so its still being used by your new installation even though the Windows files are on the new 80GB drive its still the System and the Active drive.

I assume the reason you bought the new drive was to recover the data from the original drive? If so do that now by copying whatever data you need to your other drives or to the new 80GB. Then disconnect the new 80GB drive and boot from the Windows disc, delete the partition off the original drive and reinstall Windows on it. Once you have it installed back on the original drive then you can reconnect the new drive copy any data you want off it and then format it.

I have a Maxtor one touch ext. hard drive that I let my DVR format so I could save some movies I recorded. Now that I don't need the movies any longer, I wanted to use it for backing up computer files but the DVR format must have removed the original software that was put on it to make it function so now my computer won't recognize it as a hard drive. It tells me that the drivers are loaded but I cant access it. I have been to the Seagate sites and can only find drivers to download but I can't find copies of the setup software that originally came with it. It was given to me by a friend that also no longer has the software. Does anyone have any idea where I could find this software?

I have a Maxtor D740X-6L 40gb drive but there are no details marked on the drive casing for me to enter into the BIOS. The BIOS shows most items as AUTO and everything works OK but I need to enter the drive details into the BIOS because when I use Acronis TI7 I cannot make a drive restore when using the TI startup disk as it says it cannot find any hard drives. (When I exit TI the PC starts normally).

I figured that if I fed the drive details into the BIOS instead of AUTO it might enable TI to 'see' the hard drive at TI startup.

I have Googled the drive but I cannot find the relevant details as required by the BIOS; namely -

cylinders
head
sector
CHS capacity
Maximum LBA capacity
(although I think the last two might be automatic, currently shown as 0mb)

Usually this kind of information is marked on the drive itself but not in this case.

Can anybody advise, please?

I have a maxtor hard drive SATA 200GB as my main drive and a second drive D.
Very recently when I have noticed that my computer took longer to boot into windows. Applications seem to take a bit longer than usual to load.
I have XP SP2 installed. I defragment my drive every few weeks so its not a defragment problem however when I try to defrag it now, it takes many times longer to do so.
Also for a scan disk of C: (chkdsk on boot) it took 6 hours to get to about 25%. So there must be a problem. I can hear the hard drive loading sound for a few seconds and then there is a very long pause maybe about 10-20 minutes. It should only take a few hours the last time i did it maybe about 5 hours. Something is wrong.

When I transfer a large file like 1gb into my drive D it takes 15 minutes. Which is a bit long for a SATA enabled hard drive. I have had this drive for about 2 years now and it has never gone this slow before.

I have downloaded the seatools from the maxtor website which diagnoses the drive. The tool ran slow but my hard drive passed the tests.

Also when I ran that scan disk, it did say there was a mirror copy of something and also some other things. I think it had the word security in it so it deleted somethings. It mentioned indexes and some files.
I forgot most of it.

I have checked my D drive and it is running fine and unaffected.
Also I noticed during bootup that on the windows logo screen, the one with the bar moving from left to right that it freezes for about 5 ... Read more

I'm operating on windows 7.

All I need is a way to format a single partition to FAT32, except I can't seem to find a way without losing all the data on my external hard drive.
So far I've shrunk my external hard drive by 200 gigs, but windows 7 can't format it into FAT32

So I downloaded Seagate DiscWizard, except it wants to delete everything on my entire external hard drive.
So I'm not really sure what to do. Is it even possible to have partitions with separate formats?

If you're wondering why I need to format into FAT32, it's because I need to back up my PS3.

Paul

All I want to do is get this hd formated so I can reinstall windows

(The windows vista os on this system took a crap, I tried to use the provided windows vista disk to repair, and also install, windows several times. Each time was meet with more error messages so I thought it may just be easier to format the hd from dos and then try to install windows again)

A:Formating the hard drive

Prior to installing, make the CD/ROM the first boot device and disconnect all external peripherals except the keyboard and mouse.

Once you set your BIOS to boot first from cd . . when it restarts you will see a black screen with a prompt "Strike any key to boot from cd" . . do that and you will be able to delete partitions and recreate the ones you want and proceed to formating and installing XP

That message can pass quickly, so have a finger on the keyboard when you boot. This will delete all data on the drive so be sure you have your important data backed up.

This is a good guide to reinstalling XP . . you might want to print it for reference during the install.

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

You will have to reload drivers and applications, After the installation, you will need to download and install the MicroSoft Critical Updates. Prior to connecting to the internet you should enable the XP firewall.

If you want to save your files and settings, you can use the XP FAST wizard to create an image of them and save to cd or other removable media. This is a good guide to using the Files and Transfer Setting (FAST) wizard

Hi hitesh.h, Firstly what comp do you have, what discs do you have? You have the xp disc by the sound of it what about one for drivers ets.
Also when you do format and reinstall you will LOSE all your documents and programs. Do you have disks for software you will have to reinstall and have you backed up and saved all the documents you want to keep.

You say you failed your first attempt? where did you get up to/what happened?

have you tried installing antivirus soft ware? there are quite a few good free ones available for download.

Hello medic252 and Welcome to TSG!

Firstly, backup anything on your computer that you want to keep because you should know that after reformatting your C drive you will LOSE everything!

OK, while your computer is on, you have to insert your Windows XP CD and then restart your computer.
If the CD doesn't boot then you have to go into BIOS and change the settings to make your CD Bootable.
Windows will ask you what you would like to do, choose that you want to install Windows XP.
You will be asked if you wish to create a new partition. Select the partition you have and press "D" to delete the existing partition, and then press "L" to confirm that you wish to do this. This will completely delete everything off your computer.
You will need to create a new partition. To do this press "C". You will be asked which size you wish to create your partition, just press Enter to make your new partition the maximum size. Now, select the partition you have just created to install Windows XP on by pressing Enter.
Your computer will prompt you asking if you wish to do a quick installation or a regular installation. Either will work fine but I prefer to choose "quick" because it is much faster.
Now you will need to select: "Format the partition by using the "NTFS" file system.
Windows XP will now be installed. This may take some time and then your computer will reboot.
If your CD in your CD ROM drive starts to boot just leave it, y... Read more

A:maxtor external hard drive unformatted and undesignated by drive letter

What size is the hard drive?

Do you know what motherboard you have?

STEP 1: CHECK POWER (click for expanded instructions further down the page)

Verify that the drive light and the light on the AC adapter (power supply) is illuminated normally.
It is sometimes necessary to contact Technical Support for troubleshooting and/or possibly to replace the power supply if it behaves unusually.

STEP 2: CHECK CABLING (click for expanded instructions further down the page)

Confirm that your USB/Firewire cable is firmly connected in a port that is on the rear of your desktop computer (if you have a desktop).
Try another USB or Firewire port.
If your drive is powered only by USB, such as the FreeAgent Go, the Maxtor OneTouch mini, and the Seagate Portable drive, then the drive's cable has two USB connectors. Try connecting both of the free USB connectors into a USB port for maximum power availability.
Avoid connecting the drive via a USB hub for now.

STEP 3: WINDOWS SERVICE PACKS

Follow these instructions to ensure that your installation of Windows XP/2000 has been updated to the latest Windows Service Pack.

Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties.

The System Properties window will appear. On the General tab (which will be at the front), see the "System:" information.

For Windows 2000: Update to Service Pack 4.

For Windows XP: Update to Service Pack 2.

Allow your computer to complete the installation ... Read more

Boot into a Ubuntu live CD using this tutorial:

It tells you how to download the live CD image, burn the image to a disc using this:

InfraRecorder

Then continue on the tutorial and it (luckily) shows you how to open gparted (the linux partition editor).

Delete ALL of the partitions you see, then apply this. You will then have 100% unallocated space. Then create a new partition and format it with NTFS

Shutdown your computer, remove the CD and try installing Windows again

If you format a disk, everything is erased. Period.
And so, anything you had installed, you'll have to re-install. Installed programs aren't just what's in the folder where the *exe is stored. They are also the uninstall (installsheild/Windows Installer) information, the various entries in the the registry, start menu, desktop icons, etc.

Hey All! So I just learned that I cant move files larger than 4 GB to my 1Tb external because its in fat32 format. I know I can change it to NTFS and it will fix this. my question is that I know with windows xp you changed it with the command prompt and you can do the same in windows 7 im sure. My question is that when my hd is plugged in and if I right click it I get an option that says format. Is this a faster (perhaps easier) way to format it to a NTFS without running the command prompt?

Also I never ran the setup wizard when i first used it (just started dumping files in it), would the setup software allow me to make the hd NTFSl?

If you have data on the drive that you don't want to lose, then you don't want "format". You want "convert".

The right-click "format" is the same as the command-line one.

It's best to create a new partition, too. Do it all from within Disk Management.

Right-click Computer > Manage > Disk Management. Or Start > Run: diskmgmt.msc (if your edition has Group Policy).

(I would avoid using any "setup software" at all costs. Use the operating system to set up new drives.)

Hello and please help,
My hard drive crashed so I bought another one... (old size =WD160) (new size WD320). Upon installing the XP pro OS on the new HD it was installed it on the j: drive and not on the c: drive as I expected. I believe (from reading other posts) that I can install it again and make it go to the c: drive. My question is how to I get the first install (on j:drive) removed or deleted before trying the reinstall on the c:. Please accept my apologies should this be a stupid question as I am a Senior citizen with limited comp. experience..

If the installation was a success, just not the drive letter you want, you can easily change the drive letter in disk management(right click "My Computer"---drop down pick manage--new screen --find disk management---double click---find the J drive and right click for a new drop down that has "change drive letter" as a choice...
First select the drive letter in the box---remove it---then click add letter and pick "C" or disk (0). Hit ok and your done.

I am having problems formatting my hard drive.......A few days ago, I downloaded (ACTIVE-KILL DISK) and started to kill disk my hard drive. Then, I could not get it back and or even a Prompt on the screen.
I have been trying to format the hard drive all over again but I think I?m not doing it right........First, I need a Format Utility so that a can format my hard drive at the command prompt using a CD-Boot Disk with the format utility in it.
Second, right now, I can not even get a cursor on my screen. But I know that if I use a BOOT-DISK (CD) I can get it to where I can format my hard-drive........

I need help from anyone Please..........

First, I need to know where to get the FDISK programs and are they for free...

Second, I need to know how to make a Bootable CD and, if I can put the FDISK utility in the CD.....

If any body out there can help an up an coming tech I would be very thankful to you All!!!!

A starting tech......

A:Having problems formating my hard drive!

The windows CD will work just fine to format the drive so you can put the system back on. If using XP, you don't need or want to use Fdisk, you need to format as a NTFS partition and not a FAT partition. Go in to the bios and set your boot order up as:

CDRom - 1st
Floppy - 2nd
Hard Drive - 3rd

Save that...and enter the Operating System CD and it should work for you to partition and format that drive. If the drive is not partitioned and formatted after Kill Disk, it will not work for you, so you have to do this.

I formated my hard drive and did partitioning and then reinstalled Win98. Everything worked fine at first. Then I ran the Matrox G400 disk and Creative Sound Blaster Live and everything went crazy. After that I started getting all kinds of fatal exception errors. Can't install Norton virus protector or other programs. Now it says it doesn't detect DDC monitor. Won't shut down or restart unless I unplug it. What is happening. It noted that Matrox\util\vbext.exe was a bad file name. I fixed this problem and that's when it showed up that it doesn't detect DDC monitor. Can't reboot. What do I do. Explain it simple because I am a novice. I'm trying. Have learned a lot from your site and I thank you for all the help you give us. Appreciate any help you can give me.

Hello guys, my laptop (Lenovo) is runing slow, i dont know for what kind of reason, i had running windows 10 and reinstalled windows 7 but still its going slow , i have beeing installing windows by deleting all its partition and then install windows, but there should be another way to fully format my hard drive, like in first day ?

A:Need help on fully formating hard drive ?!

When you delete all partitions during installation, it cleans all the drive. There is no better way.
If your laptop is slower than it used to be, can be for many reasons. High CPU temperature or HDD failing are one of them.
How old is your laptop?
