Thinkpad X280 - nano-SIM card

Q: Thinkpad X280 - nano-SIM card

I have the new ThinkPad x280. I need to be able to connect using a SIM card. My model is 20KF 001LV. I am trying to figure out if my laptop model supports the SIM option, if it has a nano-SIM card slot or not. There is no indication or way to see in the settings.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

X280 have a dual nanoSIM and microSD card tray located at the back of the case (check HMM on page 82 for more information). In order to use WWAN Internet connection, you also need a proper WWAN modem installed on the motherboard. Check if Fibocom L830-EB or Fibocom L850-GL is listed in Device Manager.

tl;dr Is the Thinkpad x280 flawless for Ubuntu 18.04? Hello. I recently acquired myself a X1 Yoga 3rd gen with the hopes that I would have a nice experience running Ubuntu. Unfortunately, from day one I encountered issues with it: X1 Carbon Gen 6 cannot enter deep sleep (S3 state aka Suspend-to-RAM) on Linuxhttps://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/X1-Carbon-Gen-6-cannot-enter-deep-sleep-S3-state-aka-S... Touchpad and trackpad work erratically after I close and open the laptop's lid (suspending and resuming). I need to reboot everytime.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/Thinkpad-X1-Carbon-Yoga-3rd-eratic-Mouse-and-Keyboard-... Others that I found about online after acquiring the machine:FYI - Linux May Not Support Thunderbolt Native Mode (seems to be solved)https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/FYI-Linux-May-Not-Support-Thunderbolt-Native-Mode/m-p/... Linux throttling bug (T480s)https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/870u0a/t480s_linux_throttling_bug/ And from Linux's side, poor consideration for touchscreens. Sadly, I have no choice but to return this machine next week. I feel these are nice machines in theory, and I would be willing to give them one more try. I was considering the Thinkpad x280 and I want to run Ubuntu 18.04 again. I would like to ask if any of these issues persist, or any other issues I'm not aware of show up when running Ubuntu, or any other Linux distro.

I would like to connect two 24in monitors to extend the display across the two screens.  The user manual states that if you connect a monitor to both the HDMI and USBC then USBC will have priority.  I could not find any explanation as to how two monitors can be connected to enable extended display.   I assume one option is to purchase a docking station but I am hoping there is a less expensive option. Any help would be much appreciated.

I am not sure if I'm posting this question in the right section. After signing up, I found it very difficult to work out where to post! Anyway, I am thinking of buying either an Ideapad 720s (13", core i7 8th Gen, 8GB Ram, 256 GB SSD) or a Thinkpad x280 (12", core i7 8th Gen, 8GB Ram, 512 GB SSD), and I believe they both have Thunderbolt 3. So I was wondering if there are significant differences between them. Where I am, the Ideapad is around the $1,000 mark, while the Thinkpad is about $400 more expensive. Is the Thinkpad really that much better, and if so, how? Thank you.

The X280 has RAM soldered to the main board so it can't be expanded or swapped out. If you need 16GB, buy the one with 16GB RAM.

Hello all, Long time thinkpad user from the W700 time haha. Just wanted to drop a line after recently getting a thinkpad x270 instead of the x280. I got a little worried with the design philosophy of the thinkpad x270 --> x280 lineage.  I got the x270 because of the bigger removable battery capacity along with the ethernet port among other ports.  I welcome the usb-c port in the x270 and glad to see more of that in the x280. But the fact that the x280 does not have an ethernet port along with a non-removable battery with the option to add the huge super cylindrical battery was a deal breaker for me and I see that the x280 was a step backwards in terms of a design / functionality standpoint from the x270. I am just getting a little bit worried about the design team and their vision for what the x2## series have in the future. The x280 seems to be just a cheaper version of the x1 carbon.  I have the x1 carbon btw lol. Got a few thinkpads... and I like the design for the x1 carbon and i think that to remain as it is...for the thinkpad x1 carbon. I dont want that spilling over into the x2## series. That is supposed to be a pure work horse mobile productivity device.  Anyway what do you guys all think about the direction which the x280 is taking from the x270 which I thought (referencing to the x270) was a pure great work horse laptop with an AMAZING battery life which is absolutely CRITICAL to the x200 line of thinkpa... Hi everyone, I was setting up my brandnew X280 and after installing Windows 10 Pro I downloaded Lenovo System Update tool. It proposed a number of updates including a BIOS update and I let it do its job.Last I recall was the window about BIOS update where I hit enter (or ok).The noteboks was sitting in a docking station, battery fully charged. Next time I checked the progress the screen is black and the white power LED is slowly flashing (like being in standby). However I can't wake it up. It will just keep flashing.  As I can't take out the battery on a X280 what can I do? Pressing the power button for an extended period of time didn't do anything. Is there a hidden key stroke combination or do I have to wait a couple of days (weeks) until the battery has run out? I'm afraid the BIOS update failed and the system is bricked, even though I followed the instructions by the letter. Any suggestions are more than welcome! Thanks. Q.

Hello,I bought new X280 which has proprietary connector called Ethernet Extension Adapter Gen 2. I bought it to leave other ports ready for other adapters, but I have found out, that there is another USB-C port very close next to this ethernet port and when I put ethernet adapter into laptop's proprietary port, there is no space to put second USB-C connector. My question is: If I cut the border of Ethernet Extension Adapter connector, will the USB-C work? Or is there any reason to not to do that? Many thanks.

Hi there, when I undock my X280 from the Ultra dock (notebook closed but running) and open the lid the device will not respond to keyboard or trackpoint input.I need to close the lid again which triggers entering 'energy saving' mode. Then opening the lid again will resume everything to normal. I can reproduce this every time on two identical Docks. Funny thing is, my wifes identical X280 does not show this behaviour but works fine. Any idea what I could try to solve this small (but a bit annoying issue)?Thanks.Q.

Hi. I got my custom order X280 In July with all features for office purposes and use it just 15 times since then. The battery was never drain in shutdown mode in the first days of use. I remember that after one week being off the battery had the same percentage of charge at restart in the first month of use. Since then whenever I start it I check in Vantage if there are updates and I made the necessary updates every time, Windows updates, System updates, Bios etc. By about two weeks I noticed the battery is discharging between 6 and 8 percent overnight which is quite frustrating and annoying for a three month product. Something happened which consume the power overnight when is turned off. If they are Lenovo employees on the forum please advise me what to do. I would like to know is there is a warranty defect, something that can be fixed by the following updates or something that I can personally change in order everything come back to normal. PS. I have the USB ON disabled from Vantage Thank you.

Hi,

I just bought the Thunderbolt 3 dock and remembered reading that you have to make some changes in BIOS for the usb hub to be detected in linux. So I entered BIOS and disabled thunderbolt security and enabled some other thunderbolt feature (the one below thunderbolt security, the tooltip tells you to enable this for linux support and older versions of windows 10).

After saving and rebooting all I see is a blank screen and the fans start going at full speed.

The computer does not boot into my OS and I am not able to enter BIOS again.

Any ideas how I can fix this?

Is there a way to factory reset the BIOS without entering it? Usual solution here is to remove the CMOS battery but I really don't want to open my brand new laptop unless I know my warranty is still valid.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Moderator note: post was moved to the E forum based on original incorrect model in subject.  Subject has been corrected and thread moved back to X.

A:ThinkPad X280: After BIOS update, notebook won't boot anymore

It is not very difficult to remove the CMOS/Coin Cell battery on that system, just remove the main battery, and then loosen 3 screws to open the large bottom cover (see page 73 of the ThinkPad E560 and E565 Hardware Maintenance Manual for details on removing the cover)    Once the cover is open, unplug the CMOS/Coin Cell battery (you don't actually have to remove the battery), wait a few minutes and then plug it back in (see page 81 of the HMM for details). Doing so will not effect your warranty, but don't force anything and keep track of the screws.

yeah the GTX 280 is the top (single GPU) option out now, and its blisteringly fast, however at its high price people are looking at the ATi 4870, its a much cheaper option that is almost as fast. I dont have either myself, but you need to make sure the rest of the computer can keep up, if it can those cards are incredibly fast.

So I have read other topics regarding other models, but this one is in particular in relation to my new work laptop an X280.The fan is ridiculously noisy. When I log into my windows account, a simple webpage refresh causes the fan the go overdrive and gets really noisy. Noisier than any other laptop I've had in the last 10 years. Way noisier than my previous X260. It gets rather distracting. I get that when you are doing something CPU intensive the fans need to kick in, but loading a webpage with 20% CPU usage should not be one of those situations. Even more so when the computers is not that hot anyways. I have tried setting hte thermal power settings to "balanced" while on AC power in the BIOS but it seems that it had very little effect. Is this a known issue? Is lenovo going to do anything about it?

Hi I'm toying with getting an X280 to replace my 5 year old MacBook Pro. A small form factor is important to me these days as I make music when I'm out and about, but when I am using it at home I'd also like to be able to use it with an external GPU (the Razer Core X for example) to do some low end graphics work, and occasionally play some games of course. Does anyone know if the X280 has the ability to run external graphics via the Thunderbolt 3 port? It's not necessarily a deal breaker for me, the kind of graphics work I want to do is very low-res, low-poly stuff, and maybe the internal graphics will handle this just fine. It would just be good to know going forward - I called tech support and they gave me a vague yes, based on the X280 having Thunderbolt 3. Any information/experiences with this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

I would like to know, if there is anybody else, who experienced problem with one of the usb-c port on the X280.Scenario: if we connect usb-c dock (now I need to be honest, it's Dell D6000) very randomly docking station is disconnected. All drivers on X280 are updated. I cannot blame docking stations, because there are another users, who are using the same docking station without any problem. We figured out, that if we will change port to the USB-C GEN 2 (that's the one with the Thunderbolt), there is no problem at all. Right now there are already 2 users (ie. 2 individual X280) with same behaviour, so maybe there is somebodyelse, who expereince some trouble with usb-c port Gen 1? I tried to contact Lenovo, but I have been told that if this is matter of non Lenovo product, they cannot help me. Unfortunately supporter couldn't tell me, if there is possibility that USB-C Gen1 can be instable, if you connect some usb-c device it.

Hi All!New X280 here, coming from a X260.Build quality seems far superior, very thin.It's a joy!A few questions/doubts, though: 1. Hi,

1) I see the same thing, but hadn't noticed.  It's not a mode I would use often - or ever...

2) Windows gets up to all kinds of stuff in the background after OOBE, install, or update.  You might keep task manager open (in "more detail" mode) on your desktop, and pay attention to CPU usage.

I just fired up my 280 and after settling down post-boot, it's showing around 9 hours remaining @ 95% battery.

hello, got this new thinkpad i series pIII 750, model 1161-A96, it appears that the built in ethernet card at the rear is diabled.

tried to seach the card via install new hardware but it is not detected. tried to do it manually using the downloaded driver from the website but this did fix it either.

the bios has no option to enable this.

any ideas on how to get this working...

If there definitely isn't an option in the BIOS for it, and all the normal ways of doing it in Windows don't work either, it may be a faulty port. Just check in Device manager first though that there isn't an unidentified device lurking somewhere as that may be it.

If not, as it is a brand new laptop take it back to the dealer and get them to check it out for you.

Has anyone successfully added an LTE card to this model?  Apparently it comes as an option outside of the U.S.  It has the SIM and LTE slots but no included antennas.

Hey guys, I've installed Windows XP on my laptop which previously has Ubuntu 11 but we don't have the recovery disc anymore so when I installed Windows XP I need to install the drivers manually as well. So I went to Lenovo website and downloaded the drivers for T41. Problem is after installing the drivers, I still have no LAN and Wireless icon in Network Connections.

Here's the driver I downloaded from Lenovo
Ethernet (Intel PRO/1000 LAN adapter software) for Windows XP, 2000 - ThinkPad R50, R50e, R50p, R51, T40, T41, T41p, T42, T42p, X31, X32, X40
Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI adapter software for Windows 2000/XP - ThinkPad R40, R50, R50e, R50p, R51, T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p, X31, X40
Intel Wireless LAN (11abgn, abg, bg) for Windows XP, 2000 - ThinkPad

Here's some screen shot of my Device Manager and Network Connection

I need your advice on this one.

Thanks in advance!

Im new here, and new to Windows10. Just had the p51 for two days and everything works fine. So far, i realy like the computer and the options it offers. But before I start thinking of upgreads id like to know what i have under my fingers. Since the guy at the shop, was selling a ton of laptops he culd not help me much, besides the basics like CPU, GPU, RAM. He was surprised when I told him that there were three slots free to upgrade RAM

So Im wondering is there a WAN card in this laptop,

Serial Number: PF******
Machine Type Model: 20HHS1FS00

The hardware manager seems to show a few WAN devices, and there is a microSIM slot but when I instal a SIM card there seems to be no way to configure the WAN card trough the windows network settings. the LSB gave me the option ti install:
Sierra Wireless EM7455 Software for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad
An it installed fine.

So im wondering how to check if the card is installed, or where does one configure this in windows10.

Moderator note: serial number removed to prevent abuse.

I have a T540p with integrated Intel HD 4600 graphics. The same T540p model also have a version with nvidia graphics card. I know it is not possible to upgrade my graphics card but i'm wondering, when you consider that two laptops have exact same sizes, is that means there is an empty space in my laptop for a dedicated graphics card? Is intel hd graphics card holding a space as nvidia?

A:ThinkPad Graphics Card

Welcome to the forum.

The models with NVIDIA graphics have the graphics chip soldered to the motherboard rather than on a separate card. As a result the non-NVIDIA models can't be upgraded.
